Magnolia Manor is blessed to have a committed Board. Each member is a volunteer who gives time and talent, expecting nothing in return. They represent varied backgrounds, but together they form one highly skilled, functional body. They oversee the implementation of policies and our strategic plan. They study our financial statements and ensure we are being good stewards of our resources. They offer advice based on years of education and experience. Each member plays a vital role in helping us fulfill the Mission, Vision and Values you see represented in this magazine. Magnolia Manor would like to welcome the two newest members of our governing body. Charles Ray Sheffield, an Americus native, is CEO of the George C. Woodruff Company in Columbus, Georgia. He is a graduate of Georgia Southwestern University and received his Juris Doctorate from the Mercer School of Law. Charles Ray and his wife, Rita (Reeves) Sheffield, have three children and are active members of the Columbus community. Ed Collier is a partner with CollierGamble Attorneys at Law in Dawson and serves as a Juvenile Court Judge for the Pataula Judicial Circuit. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and received his Juris Doctorate from the Mercer University School of Law. Ed and his wife, Beth, have three children and are active members of their local community. Each of these new Trustees will go through a Board Orientation later this summer and will be ready to attend their first full session at this fall’s October board meeting. Together with our residents, our staff and our Board of Trustees we are committed to “life and living.” If you haven’t visited Magnolia Manor recently, you need to come see all the incredible changes taking place. uring the summer, folks here in the South move a little slower. We choose outdoor activities based on both the thermometer and the clock. We work outside in the morning (before sunrise) and evening (when it cools down… after 10 PM). When it’s really hot and humid, we snuggle up to the air conditioner, not our spouse. Sometimes it gets so hot folks start trying to book vacations in hades just so they can cool off! And if that isn’t bad enough, while the air is humid, it typically refuses to rain. It got so dry last year, I saw a catfish hitchhiking, trying to find water! In spite of the heat, nothing seems to deter the gnats. It’s just not fair that they should thrive when we are already suffering so much. We call this wonderful time of year the lazy, hazy days of summer. There’s nothing lazy about Magnolia Manor this summer, or any other year for that matter! We have construction and renovation projects at multiple locations across South Georgia. This fall, we will launch plans to utilize even more volunteers in meaningful ways. Our chaplains have created a program to equip local church pastors for ministry with older members of their congregations. They’ve also greatly expanded our spiritual outreach to campus residents and our staff. But the expansion doesn’t stop there. Magnolia Manor appreciates our donors more than words or deeds can ever express. Elsewhere in this magazine, you will learn how we will recognize those who faithfully support our ministry each year. You’ll also see how, through the reestablishment of a lifetime giving society, we plan to honor those who have been generous for many years. And while we’re talking about societies, we’re also creating a Young Professionals Society to cultivate and recognize the next generation of Magnolia Manor supporters. We change lives every day. Magnolia Manor is on a mission to eliminate what has been described by gerontologist Dr. Bill Thomas as the three plagues of aging: helplessness, hopelessness, and boredom. As we move in that direction, each step takes us closer to realizing the vision that our communities are about life and living. Magnolia Manor has an ongoing commitment to the tireless pursuit of excellence as we serve all through love and support for a lifetime. We want to share the good news about how lives are changed, so we’re creating signature events at each of our eight campuses. We serve all through Love and Support for a Lifetime One of our new employees at Richmond Hill, Julie King, drove past Magnolia Manor on the coast countless times, noticing what a nice, pretty place it was. Each time, something kept urging her to go inside. She had no reason to go inside. She didn’t need a place to live. She didn’t know anyone living there. Maybe she was a little curious. She had nursing experience, but she wasn’t looking for a job. Finally, one day last fall she decided to drop in. “I immediately felt I was in a warm, welcoming environment,” says Julie. After enjoying a tour of the facility, she returned home, did some research and saw an opening for a Director of Assisted Living. That was six months ago. Today, both the residents and Julie are being blessed by her decision to take the job.

Richmond Hill Administrator, Michelle Laidler, is more than pleased King stopped in that day! “Since her arrival we have seen resident satisfaction increase ten-fold,” she shares. “Residents are participating in activities at a greater rate. She is doing a tremendous job. Plus, she’s hired a strong team.” As Director, King handles all the daily functions of Assisted Living, including developing and implementing every resident’s plan of care based on their needs. For her, it’s so much more than that. King makes it all about the residents. Her energetic and compassionate personality is infectious. One of her favorite sayings is “Aging isn’t a choice, growing old is.” Her goal is to keep each resident’s mind, body, and spirit active. (One of our organizational values!). “When we give up is when we grow old,” she says. Family is a vital part of residents’ plan of care. The “care team,” consisting of the resident, family, and staff, meets regularly to develop a plan to assist them with everything they need while simultaneously promoting independence. Because she knows aging makes us more prone to anxiety, depression, and social isolation, she is working to keep residents active, happy, and healthy. “Whether it’s sharing laughter, a few tears, or a good story with one another, experiencing life with the Magnolia Manor community is very rewarding,” she says. Julie, her husband Michael, and their dog Abraham, moved from New Jersey four years ago and are loving the South, particularly the warm climate and the true southern hospitality. Julie places great importance on taking care of herself emotionally, physically, and spiritually, just as she urges the residents to do. “If you can’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anybody,” she believes. By doing so, she is able to give all she can, stay balanced, and avoid burnout. Julie’s thankful to have walked in that day. She has plenty of ideas for the future and looks forward to growing with the organization. Not only are our residents blessed as Julie loves and serves them daily, she finds reward in her calling as well. “I feel blessed – the residents bless me!”

– Romans 12:7 (CEB) At Magnolia Manor, our desire is to serve and bless our residents. But residents often serve us and those they live among. Meet Carolyn Goree, a blessing to Magnolia Manor for the past 30 years! “I had to get old enough before I could come here to live!” exclaims Carolyn. Her first exposure to Magnolia Manor was when she began teaching a Monday night Bible study on the Macon campus 31 years ago. 19 people gathered in her former neighbor’s apartment, and she was immediately intrigued. “I realized the first night I came to teach the Bible study that this is where I wanted to come and live.” When she finally became “old” enough, and had enough of the overwhelming upkeep of an eight-room home, she made the move. “I will confess it’s a big decision to make, but I’ve never regretted it,” Carolyn admits. That was 25 years ago, and she still loves Magnolia Manor after all these years! What exactly does she love about living at Magnolia Manor? “The fellowship with the residents! We get acquainted with the ones on our floor and kind of stick that way, until the Bible study meets, and then everyone comes together from both buildings,” says Carolyn. “And we gather every day before lunch down in the dining room before meal time comes. That is a sweet fellowship that we have there!” Carolyn knows from her experience a move can be scary, but emphasizes the importance of connecting with those around her. “Some people can’t handle it… the move, the change, but I’ve never looked back, no regrets whatsoever coming here!” Those relationships have helped the Monday night Bible study grow so much over the past 31 years that they now meet in the main dining room to handle all the attendees. They gather, share prayer concerns, and dive into their study. Carolyn’s love of the Lord and love of her neighbors is clearly evident. For those residents looking to meet and connect in other ways, she has advice to make sure they are never lonely. “All you need to do is to go out into each lounge, and let that elevator door open. If you make the first move, they will certainly stop and talk with you.” Carolyn sums up her thoughts about her Magnolia Manor home of 25 years, “It is a good place to live!”

Commitment to our faith tradition

When Senior Chaplain John Walker started his ministry with Magnolia Manor one year ago, his first priority was developing and implementing more opportunities for worship and spiritual enrichment. To make it happen takes more than just John alone. A few additions have been made to the spiritual care team as we move forward with this commitment. Michelle Hunter comes to us from Tuscaloosa, her home town. Michelle has a wide range of experience in pastoral care, most recently serving as a full time chaplain in hospice ministry. Since her arrival on February 1 of this year, she has assisted the Senior Chaplain with responsibilities of leading worship, delivering sermons, leading Bible studies, visitation of residents on our Americus Campus, serving communion, and serving as resident chaplain in our Nursing Center in Americus. Michelleâ€™s top priority is to serve our residents and staff. Residents, their families and staff alike have experienced the gracious and caring spirit Michelle offers as she ministers among us. Vicki Scott officially joined our staff on July 1, 2017. She serves as our resident chaplain on the Columbus Campus. Vicki brings to her new ministry as a chaplain a sincere heart for Senior Adults. She has served as a pastor in the local church since June of 2006. Vicki brings a wealth of experience and a true passion for offering spiritual care for residents, their families, and staff on our Columbus Campus. Dot Stewart moved from West Virginia. She is a retired United Methodist pastor with ten years of pastoral experience in the West Virginia Conference. Dot began her work as our chaplain on the Moultrie Campus on January 1, 2017. She truly has a heart for serving others, especially our residents. Cile Mitchell is a newly retired clergy member who has served local churches in the South Georgia conference for over a decade. She will be serving as a part-time chaplain on our Macon campus. Cile is looking forward to doing her part to minister to our residents and being part of their spiritual growth. In the coming months, Chaplain Walker is and looking forward to offering new Bible Study opportunities hopes these will become an established course of study for our Independent and Assisted Living residents. In addition, he will introduce new chaplains for St. Marys and St. Simon Island campuses. â€œI look forward to all God has in store for us as we share life together in the family called Magnolia Manor.â€?

Dignity, respect, care and compassion for all

On a daily basis, we engage with people who are making decisions regarding the move of a loved one to assisted living or skilled nursing. Having an understanding, compassionate person involved in the process is of utmost importance. The staff called to work in this field of ministry have an overflowing heart for what they do. Missy Wiggins, Americus Nursing Center Admissions Director, says, “Family members’ emotions are often high in the beginning. It is through listening, discussing fears and concerns, and touring the campus that we assure them our nursing staff, medical director, therapy staff, certified nursing assistants, and dietary will meet their loved one’s needs.” Residents respond well to the care and love they receive at Magnolia Manor. We know this because of the gracious statements of thanks we hear from their relatives. Here are just a few examples:

“I can sleep at night because I know she’s safe.” – Camille Adams “It was a very hard decision to make to move her here, but in the long run it’s been a very good decision because now she’s a lot better off, and so am I knowing that she is taken care of.” – Brenda Newberry “No facility is perfect. There are going to be problems that arise periodically, but in the six years my mother has been in [nursing care], we are most comfortable with her being here. I wouldn’t have her be any other place in Glynn County, or beyond those borders, too.” Kyle Updike “I don’t have to worry at all about Dad. The people that work here are phenomenal…so caring. They genuinely care and love the residents. It’s just like a huge family.” – Carol Wiggins “Thank you for the loving care shown my Mama.” – Anonymous “Magnolia Manor is more than a nursing home. It’s a place of miracles.” Charlotte Mulkin Missy keeps Colossians 4:6 posted in her office and reads it several times a day to help her meet the needs of the families she serves. “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.” Missy and all Magnolia Manor staff desire to serve in such a way that we will always hear positive words of encouragement and thanks from family members and residents.

Integrity through excellence

The Georgia Society for Healthcare Engineers (GASHE) is an organization dedicated to keeping all its members educated on healthcare rules and regulations. Just as important, GASHE provides training programs related to the health care industry. Sammy Bledsoe, Vice President for Physical Plant/Environmental Services at Magnolia Manor, has been an active member since 1998. He has served as treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president of the organization. Under his leadership as president, GASHE was awarded the Gold Award from ASHE (the affiliate on the national level) three years in a row, as well as and the Platinum Award, the highest award given by ASHE for excellent programing and training.

Bledsoe was also recognized for his outstanding work with the organization when he was given the Engineer of the Year Award in 2005, and an Appreciation Award in 2011. Much to his surprise, he was recently given the prestigious President’s Award. “The President’s Award is given to someone who has served over the years as an officer and has moved on, but is still very much involved in the organization - helping plan, organize, and implement programs,” explains Bledsoe. “I was not expecting this award! For me, being involved in this organization is just something I do. It was an absolute surprise and I was truly thankful. Presidential awards are not given out often. For me to receive this was an honor.” Bledsoe intends to continue being involved in GASHE and encourages anyone in the healthcare industry to also get involved. “It has helped me tremendously over the years to do my job by keeping me updated on both State and Federal regulations,” he says. “In addition, the training programs keep me up-to-date on managing people, equipment, and contractors.” We congratulate Sammy for being recognized for excellence in his field and appreciate the commitment and expertise he provides Magnolia Manor. He has been an employee at Magnolia Manor since 1997.

Healthy mind, body, and spirit

The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. – Johann Sebastian Bach What refreshes your soul? At Magnolia Manor of the South in Moultrie, it’s being a part of the band!! The 20-year-old “Age Beater” band has been an important ministry both to the residents who participate and to those who enjoy their performances. “You’re never too old to be a part of the band!” says administrator and band director Teresa Newell. Newell, a Magnolia Manor employee since 1994, assumed band directing duties 17 years ago. The original director was resident Eleanor Heisler. “Music is good therapy. It can be a mood changer,” says Newell. The band members agree. Resident Juanita Weeks enjoys making music and states, “It just gives you a lift!” Other band members concur that it is just a lot of fun and they enjoy making people happy!! Nadine Smith adds, “being in the band is also a commitment to being at the right place at the right time!”

It does take commitment to participate. There are weekly practices and performance dates. Newell finds it very rewarding to take the band “on the road” to churches and assisted living facilities. (She especially loves the Christmas season and wishes it were year-round!). Those rewards are two-fold. One is being able to share their music ministry to different audiences; and second is realizing that older adults in the audience may be inspired to believe “if they can be in a band at this age, then I can be in a band!” We are grateful for the talents of Teresa Newell and the “Age Beaters.” May they continue to spread the good news of God’s love through their music and refresh many souls along the way. Creative change and constant improvement

“I n everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35 Many of you are already aware of Magnolia Manor’s signature events, and perhaps have participated in a few. Lauren Sapp, Director for Special Events, is working hard to grow those events in addition to creating others. In the short six months she has been on staff, she has been busy researching each campus community, conferring with the administrators and advisory boards, brainstorming ideas, and planning for the events already on the calendar. “My goal is for each campus to have their own signature fundraising event within the next two years,” she says. “I enjoy being creative and thinking outside the box to come up with something new. For the existing events, I want to find ways to improve what is already there, and offer my assistance to those already making it successful.” The events currently in place are the Macon Golf Tournament, St. Marys Low Country Boil, The John Gill Memorial Quail Hunt, The Chairman’s Invitational Quail Hunt, and the 5K run in Americus. The St. Marys Advisory Board has planned the Low Country Boil since 2012 and raised nearly $11,000 in 2016. “Having fundraising events is as much a friend-raiser, as it is a fundraiser. We are giving the community a fun event to attend at the same time we’re raising money to support our residents,” says Sapp. “These events are attended by people who believe in our mission, vision, and values and want to see Magnolia Manor continue to thrive for years to come. It is an opportunity to share with them in person how much we appreciate their support. It also gets people to our campus to see firsthand the services and care we provide. So whether it’s a participant, sponsor, or volunteer, we are all working towards one goal.” “I love everything that goes into planning an event; the organizing, list making, calling sponsors, getting participants, and making schedules. But my favorite part is after the event starts, when I can sit back and watch people enjoy being there. I hope I help them realize the contribution they are making. Everyone is philanthropic and charitable for different reasons and in different ways, but when we all come together we have a great impact.” Check out Upcoming Events on page 24. Donors are the heartbeat of any non-profit, so it is important for the organization to recognize and show appreciation to those who generously support the mission. Elyse Bower, Director for Donor Relations, joined the Magnolia Manor family in January, and is anxious to follow through with that task. “I feel I’m here as an answer to prayer. Being part of an organization that is making a difference and helping others is my calling,” says Bower. “In this role my goal is to grow our donor base by cultivating relationships with new and current donors, which will hopefully grow our donations so we can continue our mission of serving through love and support for a lifetime!” Born and raised in Monroe, GA, Bower is a 2011 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelors in Communication Studies and a minor in Sociology. She found her calling while working with non-profits in the Athens area during a project for an event management class. “My favorite part of the non-profit world is interacting with donors and volunteers,” she shares. “I love getting to know them, and hearing their stories of why an organization is important to them.” Her goals include reestablishing the Annual Giving Society to recognize our donors and show our appreciation for their continued generosity to our organization and mission. She is also creating a Young Professionals Society to engage the younger generation and gain their support of our mission. Without them, we may not have the means to uphold the sacred promise on which we were founded that may one day affect them, their parents, or grandparents. Through this program they will volunteer, raise money, and serve as advocates for Magnolia Manor in the community. In addition, she will re-launch a Bequest Campaign to provide options for donors who choose to leave a legacy and support of Magnolia Manor after their lifetime. “I would love the opportunity to meet with individuals who are eager to learn more about ways to support Magnolia Manor, or want to offer suggestions to better our fundraising and donor relations efforts.” Elyse can be reached at 229-931-5934 or ebower@magnoliamanor.com.

e are pleased to announce Magnolia Manor St. Marys and St. Simons Island Assisted Living were recently awarded the American Healthcare Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) 2017 Bronze National Quality Award. The award is the first of three distinctions possible through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, which honors long term and post-acute care providers that have demonstrated their commitment to improving the quality of care for seniors and persons with disabilities. “Bronze award recipients advance our mission of improving lives by delivering solutions for quality care,” said Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “We applaud their efforts to enrich the lives of those in the long term and post-acute care communities we serve.” Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is also the foundation of the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative. The Baldrige program helps organizations in different business sectors improve and achieve performance excellence. The award program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Providers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop an organizational profile with fundamental performance elements such as vision and mission statements and key strengths and challenges. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement a performance improvement system. Trained Examiners review each application to determine if the center has met the demands of the criteria. Bronze recipients may then move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria required for the Silver Achievement in Quality Award. A full list of the recipients is available on the AHCA/NCAL Quality Awards website at www.ahcancal.org. “We congratulate this year’s Bronze award recipients and look forward to offering continued support and guidance on their journey to improve quality care,” said AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Alana Wolfe. “The dedication and focus on quality that each organization has shown garners recognition.
