t is always interesting to be reflective and sit down to write about the things we have accomplished in the previous year while continuing to push forward into the new year. Magnolia Manor, the leadership teams, along with all of the outstanding staff members, should pause for a minute to pat themselves on the back and take credit for a job well done. The loved ones entrusted to our care can take comfort in the knowledge that through servant leadership, hard work and dedication, we have created an atmosphere reflective of our new motto, “It’s about life...It’s about living.”

Throughout this magazine and annual report, you will see just a small example of what is happening at Magnolia Manor. Whether it is yesterday, today or tomorrow, we will continue to work on the challenges and issues facing Magnolia Manor because, in the end, the only certainty we have is there is going to be “change.” Our goal is to make these changes, whether political, regulatory, environmental, natural, financial or spiritual as positive as possible. We need your help with the doubters to help them understand that “change” is not necessarily bad. There is “change” everywhere at Magnolia Manor these days and each of you can play an important role in how this “change” can be successful. We have facilities that are undergoing major renovations. We have cutting edge technology being implemented at every level to help our staff do their jobs better. We have branding and marketing efforts being pushed to help potential residents and their family members understand Magnolia Manor’s service options. We have prayer and support from our spiritual care team lifting us up at every turn. We have donors for memorials, capital needs, and care delivery. We have initiatives to create the best working environments and support for our staff. We have a Board of Trustees that is active and engaged in determining the future of Magnolia Manor. We love the history of Magnolia Manor and appreciate the challenges we face each day, but we must always look to the future. The changes at Magnolia Manor coincide with the current change in seasons. Spring is the time we begin our Annual Mother’s Day Giving Campaign. Featured in this magazine is the story of Pat Neff, a mom and Magnolia Manor resident with an unselfish, giving heart whom we honor, along with all the other women in our lives who hold the title, Mother. We encourage you to recognize someone in your life who has made a difference by giving a gift which benefits The League of the Good Samaritan. 100% of your gift goes to providing the best quality Christian care to residents.
“It’s about Life, It’s about Living.” Are you a part of the exciting things happening at Magnolia Manor? If not, why not? “Change” is everywhere. Come join us. Make a difference in someone’s life. Magnolia Manor had a great 2016, and we are looking forward to an even better 2017. This will only happen if you do your part and become an active participant in life at Magnolia Manor. See you soon!

veryone likes a fresh start. There’s something exciting about a new beginning that energizes and excites us. We quickly leave the past behind and focus on what the future holds. All too often in our quest for the next big thing, we forget to take stock in our past accomplishments. Browse through the following pages and find out what makes Magnolia Manor so special. This annual report is a celebration of just a few of the amazing things that happen here every day. It’s also a snapshot of the incredible employees that make those things happen. Most importantly, you’ll learn about the residents whose inspiring stories make our days richer and brighter. Ever since our Americus campus opened in 1963, we have embraced our calling as a Methodist extension ministry. As such we are called to provide holistic care, so we have spiritual life programs at each of our campuses. We follow a servant ministry model that recognizes our employees as servants of Christ who offer our hands, feet, voices and talents as instruments to be used by God in service to others. You probably didn’t know that with eight locations across South Georgia and more than 1,000 employees serving more than 1,000 residents, we are one of the largest retirement communities in all of Methodism. We’re not one of the fanciest, and don’t want to be. We don’t require exorbitant entrance fees. Instead, we try to be affordable for the average Georgian because these are the older adults who need us most. As a faith-based nonprofit, we are also called to be good stewards of our assets. You can rest assured that we use your donations wisely. When I came here, people kept talking about “the Magnolia Manor way.” I didn’t know what that was, but a year later I now understand. It’s the commitment to put residents first. It’s about how we treat them, our staff and all of our assets. It’s what we believe. It’s reflected in our mission, vision, and values. It’s a way of life, a feeling, an attitude and a host of other things that are born of our calling to be in ministry. It defies every attempt to boil it down to a sound bite or a paragraph, but it really is about our new motto:
It’s about life…It’s about living!

Daron Bulter with resident Lelia Edge
We serve all through Love and Support for a Lifetime It’s a blessing to find yourself in a line of work that aligns directly with an organization’s mission. Daron Butler has done just that. Recognizing that God has gifted him with the ability to lead with a loving heart and have a compassion to care for others, Butler is using those gifts to bless our residents. Graduating with a Psychology degree from Georgia Southwestern College, Daron first spent ten years with Middle Flint Behavioral Healthcare before making his way to Magnolia Manor as Human Resources Director on Friday, February 5, 1996. He then worked his way up to Assistant VP for Human Resources, VP for Community Relations, Assistant Administrator, and just this past fall, becoming Administrator for Columbus West Nursing Center. “Daron Butler is an absolute professional,” says Susie Fussell, Americus Nursing Center Administrator. “His background in Human Resource Management and his dedication to servant leadership and customer service, have positioned him to excel as an Administrator. During his time as Assistant Administrator, Daron was a tremendous asset to our Nursing Center team.” “I love serving the residents, family members, and staff, and making a positive difference in the lives of others,” Butler states. Those who work with Daron are seeing his words in action and have come to respect his leadership. “Mr. Butler is fair and makes you feel he has confidence in you by letting you do your job. If there is a problem, he is willing to work with you,” shares Activities Director Louise Bush. Regarding Butler’s relationship with residents, she adds, “He will go out of his way to talk with them. His door is always open for residents, as well as staff and family members to visit.” Daron’s vision for those he serves is clear. “Our goal is to continue to keep our residents as our first priority and to always provide them with quality care,” he states. “Ensuring that we are getting paid for the services we provide through sound reimbursement processes and systems is key to the security of those we care for. Finally, we make sure we are good stewards of the resources we’re given to provide our services through good financial management principles and techniques.” The biggest change Butler has seen since his move to Administrator has been the pace. In this fast-paced environment, many days he can be found managing a revolving door of meetings from admissions, to quality measures, to assisting residents issues, to staff schedules…all within minutes! “Now that’s busy,” he says, “but I wouldn’t have it any other way!” Apparently carrying over into his home life, Daron is busy supporting his mother after losing his dad a few years ago. He also serves as Deacon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, is President of Lambda Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and is the head coach of Georgia Force Elite Travel Baseball. He also makes time for his family. His wife is Mesa, and his two sons are Darvon and Kendall.

Young Pat Neff
Vision Our Communities are about Life and Living
There is an old saying, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Magnolia Manor resident Pat Neff is a living example of that quote. She believes in the commonly held philosophy that “the more you give, the more you get back.” Throughout her life, Pat has kept an amazing, refreshing outlook on life, family, and being a blessing to others - even when things weren’t necessarily perfect. She has an elegant (and refreshingly humorous) air about her that might make one think she has experienced a life not lacking for anything and without a care in the world. But as you take a closer look, it’s clear her strength, humor, and generosity grew out of a life full of ups and downs. During what could be viewed as difficult times in her life, Pat chose to remain positive. “The ups were more than the downs,” she says. “I’ve had a magnificent life.” Pat was born in Laramie, Wyoming on September 4, 1924. As would become commonplace in her life, she only lived there a short time. Her father, worked for JCPenney and was transferred to Columbus, Kansas when she was two. Along with her older brother, her parents, and her grandmother, this close-knit family enjoyed small-town life. It was a simple time. Many Saturdays were spent watching people on the town square for entertainment. Other pastimes included sports and reading. Her mother’s devotion to helping her brother overcome his struggle with reading led to Pat’s love of books at an early age. She could read by the time she started kindergarten. To this day, reading is a big part of her life. “My Kindle account is very active!” she shares. The Depression hit Pat’s family very hard and they lost everything. It was a rough time, Pat explains, but as she viewed it, “Everyone I knew was in the same boat, so there was no ‘Oh, look at you, you’re poor.’” She and her brother never whined or complained. “We knew our parents struggled and we never wanted to upset the apple cart.” Even at a young age, Pat was thinking of others before herself. During the stage of life when moving could be upsetting to a teenager, it wasn’t for Pat. When her father changed jobs and the family moved three more times before she completed high school, it never bothered her. “I just enjoyed going from one place to another. I didn’t feel a loss.” She is thankful for not having the difficulties some teens had. “I went from eighth grade to maturity.” She says she can’t complain about her childhood. Pat enjoyed tap dancing classes and performances, her books, and stayed interested in current events. Pat probably got her sense of humor from her mother who once joked during the Lindbergh kidnapping news, “If they kidnapped you, they’d probably bring you back!” In Pat’s words, she had a “requisite” number of boyfriends during those years of move and change. But, as she describes, the real adventure began a year out of high school with a February 14, 1943 first date with John Neff. John was selling monuments while waiting to go into the service. Pat describes those days with a laugh. “I did my courting in a monument truck! Green grass, tombstones…interesting!” Five Article Continued on Page 20

Values
1
Commitment to our faith tradition
One good way to gauge Magnolia Manor’s commitment to our faith tradition is to talk with the residents themselves and find out how they are doing spiritually. Rachel Hurst has been living at Magnolia Manor Americus since 2014 and has wonderful insight to share. Rachel enjoys many things about living here – talking to people, her book club, and taking care of the many plants around the Retirement Center, but she especially finds great reward in her spiritual life here. “It’s not everywhere you go that you feel free to talk about God,” Hurst shares. “People here are so accepting of my problems, as well as accepting when I suggest to them, ‘Can I pray for you?’ I don’t have the answers, but I know who does have the answers! That’s been such a blessing to me because the staff and everyone is so accepting of this. I feel that’s one of the reasons why God blesses this place so. The chaplaincy has been very kind and helpful” Our commitment to provide an atmosphere where our residents can grow spiritually is strengthened when we hear words like Rachel’s. She is indeed a blessing to those around her. In turn, may we as an organization be a blessing to her, and all our Magnolia Manor family.

Dignity, respect, care and compassion for all
Kathy Christopher’s mother, Martha Brogden has been at Magnolia Manor Buena Vista since March of 2016, making great strides in recovering from a fall and subsequent congestive heart failure. After seeing what her mother has gone through, Kathy understands that it takes a special kind of person to care for older adults, and she whole-heartily knows the staff at Magnolia Manor have the gifts and compassion to do what they do because she has seen it firsthand. On one occasion her mother was having a bad day. One of the staff came in to take care of her laundry, and Martha mentioned she wasn’t doing well. Immediately, the staff person stopped what she was doing and prayed with her. “She said that made her feel so much better!” shares Kathy. “To me that’s saying, ‘I’ll stop whatever I’m doing to help you.” Additionally, Kathy said once when her mother was preparing for a class reunion, the facility hairdresser was not scheduled to come in. Seeing her disappointment, one of the nurses arranged a special appointment for her, just to make sure she felt and looked good for her event. “They just go above and beyond!” says Kathy. The “above and beyond” compassion led Martha to stay on at Magnolia Manor instead of moving back in with her daughter. That desire of our staff to make our residents a top priority extends to all our campuses. It’s a VALUE we look for when seeking people to work within our organization. The result is making someone like Martha Brogden feel loved and cared for on a day-to-day basis.

Integrity through excellence
In addition to having compassion for our residents, it is of utmost importance to make continual strides in enhancing the lives of our residents through quality care. The National Quality Award Program, implemented by The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living, is a one way for Magnolia Manor to administer a performance improvement system and work toward fulfilling those excellence goals. By 2016, all five of our skilled nursing facilities earned the Bronze Quality Award. In addition, the Retirement Center Americus, Magnolia Manor South, and Magnolia Manor on the Coast have also attained the Bronze Quality Award. Once Bronze level award is received, organizations can then start the process of reaching Silver then Gold level status. For 2017, we have two Assisted Living facilities applying for the Bronze, and one of our skilled nursing facilities applying for the Silver Award. Another familiar quality measure is the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service’s five-star rating system. Magnolia Manor Marion County has the highest rating at five stars in quality measures. The Americus Nursing Center, Columbus West, and St. Simons are close behind with four stars in quality measures. This scoring reflects 18 measures of quality care. Additionally, there are new Federal Requirements of Participation (RoPs), which are necessary standards of care facilities must meet. When asked to summarize the over 700 pages of requirements, Barbara Mitchell, Magnolia Manor’s Compliance Director, stated, “It basically means the resident is the locus of control and must have more input in their individualized plan of care.” The RoP is phased in over three years. Implementation of the requirements of Phase I was November 28, 2016. The Phase II implementation date is November 28, 2017, and Phase III implementation is November 28, 2018. All of our efforts for excellence in these areas of quality and Person Centered Care will remain at the forefront of our goals for 2017 and beyond. Finally, we are honored to announce that Susie Fussell and Barbara Mitchell were recognized with two prestigious awards from the Georgia Healthcare Association during the January GHCA Convention in Atlanta. For her execution and planning during the Hurricane Matthew evacuation, Americus Nursing Center Administrator Susie Fussell received the first annual 2016 Emergency Preparedness Champion of Long Term Care Award. The GHCA Emergency Preparedness Committee created the award to recognize those who go above and beyond to ensure the safety of the residents and caregivers and lead their centers in preparedness efforts in the event of an emergency. Barbara Mitchell received the GHCA/GCAL Leadership in Public Confidence Award, one of the highest level awards achievable through the association. Barbara, who has served Magnolia Manor selflessly for the past 30 years was recognized for being a leader in promoting confidence in the community by building relationships in organizations and community outlets, providing information to policy makers, and organizing others to act in the best interest of long term care. Congratulations to both Susie and Barbara on these great achievements and for being outstanding examples of “Integrity through Excellence.”

Healthy mind, body, and spirit
We are well into the new year and by now many have long since broken their new year’s resolutions. A majority of those resolutions involved being a healthier you. For those who live and work at Magnolia Manor, there are resources available on the various campuses to help keep that wellness resolution. In addition, for those who find themselves in need of a place to rehab after a surgery or a physical setback, there are options available as well. Each of our campuses is unique and caters to different needs…from a gym, pool, and workout rooms for our Independent and Assisted Living residents and employees, to comprehensive rehab and therapeutic programs for our skilled nursing facilities. According to Jeni Hixon, Wellness Director on the Americus campus, residents who are consistent with workout routines improve in stability and general strength, gain longer strides instead of “shuffle stepping,” improve in mental health, pain management in problem areas such as the back, knees, and hips, and have more overall confidence in their everyday living. At Magnolia Manor Rehabilitation, Timothy Dean, Rehab Director, has seen successful outcomes from the program and facility. “When you have a positive environment for patients in rehab and they are surrounded by positive staff, there is a greater likelihood of a positive result.” He, along with other staff across our campuses, make sure patients have a full mind, body, and spirit experience. Speaking of spiritual care, another valuable resource across all of our campuses is our Chaplaincy Program. Since coming on board in June of 2016, Senior Chaplain John Walker has made great strides in expanding Magnolia Manor’s pastoral care program. By offering more opportunities for worship and spiritual enrichment, Walker believes residents and staff can grow in their faith journey. On the Americus campus alone, over 200 spiritual care Bible studies and worship services are planned for 2017. John’s hope and prayer is that all residents and staff at Magnolia Manor can live a full life of faith.

Creative change and constant improvement
In addition to overall general maintenance at the eight Magnolia Manor facilities, and repairs to three coastal facilities after Hurricane Matthew, here are a few major improvements of note in 2016. 1. In Americus, two new wheelchair-equipped vans were purchased as the previous vehicles had run their due course. In the Retirement Center, we have taken several one-room efficiency apartments and converted to one and two-bedroom suites. We have also applied new wall surfacing, handrails, lighting, and new carpeting. 2. The Columbus Assisted Living facility updated the flooring from carpet to wood plank, greatly enhancing its look and feel. 3. Magnolia Manor Macon was pleased to upgrade their emergency call system for residents to use when in need of assistance. 2017 will also have its share of major projects above and beyond the usual upkeep. St. Simons Island and Moultrie will have flooring upgrades, and Buena Vista and Columbus East will begin major remodel projects, just to name a few. Look for press releases and notifications on our website and social media, we will keep residents and family members apprised of the changes and improvements coming to Magnolia Manor in the coming days and months ahead.
Our Thanks Magnolia Manor would like to extend our sincerest thank you to those who responded to help cover the cost of our Hurricane Matthew evacuation. The enormous impact the storm had on our budget is real, and we appreciate your continued financial and prayerful support. To date, we have received over $51,000.

Pat with daughter, son and daughter-in-law
Vision Article Continued From Page 6
months after their first date, John and Pat were married. Shortly after that, Pat was back on the move. This time traveling with John while he was in the Army. Their many travels took them to St. Louis, Missouri; Salt Lake City, Utah; Lincoln, Nebraska; Leavenworth, Kansas; then back to Fort Scott, Kansas. When he got out of the Army, John signed on with an insurance agency. Soon afterwards they started their family. John Michael was born in 1947, followed by Josef in 1948, and Mary in 1951. On becoming a mother, Pat shares, “My early interests were sports-related (from my brother and my dad), and because my family was small, I was really never around any babies. The first few days after Michael was born, I used a hand mirror to check if he was breathing!!” Other than a brief medical scare Michael experienced at six months old, Pat quickly embraced being a mom, and according to her children, she was a good one! “She would do anything for you, and nothing has changed to this day,” says her son Michael. “I don’t think I could have asked for anything better.” Her daughter Mary echoes that sentiment. “She’s always been there for us and is so supportive!” As she reflects back now, Pat’s fondest memories are of her family. There were a few more moves along the way, including the only one Pat didn’t care for…Dubuque, Iowa. Through it all, the family stayed close, did everything together, and enjoyed many wonderful years. Pat especially remembers times spent at their cabin on the lake near Tulsa, Oklahoma fishing, boating, playing in the water, as well as one particularly memorable trip to Yellowstone. As she recalls, the family was traveling in a brand new station wagon and the rear end went out on their way. In true fashion, they never got discouraged; they found a hotel with a pool for the kids until the car was repaired, then they went on to enjoy the rest of their trip. In 1999, while living in California, John began to show signs of Alzheimer’s, so together Pat and John started looking for a more suitable place to live. Michael and his wife Mary were living in the St. Marys area, and after Pat and John visited a few times, they became enchanted with the surroundings. “On our third visit, the moss got to us,” Pat explains with a smile. They headed South and found a beautiful home in Osprey Cove, taking great delight in decorating and being involved in the community. When the time was right, they made the move to Magnolia Manor, where they enjoyed the privacy and quiet until John passed away in 2012, just 12 days after their 69th anniversary. Pat made the decision to continue living at Magnolia Manor, and says, “Magnolia Manor offers so much. There’s no worry and excellent care.” She enjoys feeling comfortable and safe and, according to her daughter-in-law, Mary, still stays plugged into life – enjoying sports, her books, politics, and talking with others. Pat’s son Josef lost a hard fought battle with cancer on his 65th birthday in 2013. Her daughter Mary lost her husband in 2015. “I’ve had my share of losses,” states Pat, but her positive outlook and faith continue to keep her grateful. “I think the greatest thing you can do is say, Thank you, God!” She and John had a history of being generous and thinking of others, and even after his death, she continues to make a life by what she gives. “In my soul, I feel like God has blessed me with so much. I feel the need to share.” Her giving heart beats on…

Giving In Action... By Stephen L. Vinson
Before the Bishop appointed me to extension ministry, I served as a pastor for more than two decades. During that time, I met some amazing people who made generous gifts to support a variety of ministries. Galen and Juanita Holsinger are perfect examples. Following WWII, Galen found a job sweeping floors in a small community bank. Then he became a teller. One day one of the owners offered him an opportunity to purchase an interest in the bank. They were people of great faith who believed God told them to borrow the money and accept the offer. Juanita was a school teacher, the daughter of an EUB (now United Methodist) minister who recalls being so poor there was not enough to eat. Galen’s parents barely scratched out a living on a small farm in Dust Bowl Oklahoma. From these humble beginning, Galen eventually became the sole owner of the bank. He and Juanita never forgot their roots and quietly did random acts of kindness with their money. They loved me as their pastor, and they almost singlehandedly financed our church budget. Galen was known to make personal loans to people who couldn’t qualify for bank loans. Occasionally, they paid him back. He and Juanita backed community progress, financed special projects and established scholarships. All was done secretly with a minimum number of people knowing who gave the money. When they passed away, the bulk of their estate went to various charities. They left a legacy that will change lives for decades to come. They had a vision and made it become reality. What will be your legacy? What is your vision? Will people remember you when you’re gone? Will they talk about your generosity? Will you continue to change lives through your gifts? I’d like to challenge you to remember Magnolia Manor in your estate plans. Because seniors are living longer, many are outliving their savings, and projections are that this trend will continue as Baby Boomers age. They and the generations to follow will need The League of The Good Samaritan. Will you leave a bequest to The League? How about leaving a portion of your estate to our endowment fund where your legacy will live in perpetuity? Talk to your estate planner about including either a set amount or a percentage of your estate to Magnolia Manor, Inc. or its successor, a faith-based Georgia not-for-profit corporation with principal offices at 2001 S. Lee Street, Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. Call or write me if you’d like to know more. I can be reached at svinson@magnoliamanor.com or at (229) 931-5925.
