-St. Therese of Lisieux For many of us, the very first person who nurtured us was our mother. Our mother’s care began before we were born, and if we’re fortunate, continues into adulthood. We set aside the 2nd Sunday of each year in May to honor the women who nurtured us. It is a day to show appreciation to all of the special women who had a part in caring for us as we celebrate Mother’s Day.

Each year, we select a resident who is also a mother to represent all mothers at Magnolia Manor during our annual Mother’s Day Giving Campaign. This year, we are grateful to have Magnolia Manor South in Moultrie resident, Nadine Smith, to represent the mothers who are entrusted to our care and call Magnolia Manor home. Mrs. Smith is pictured on the front cover of this issue with her two daughters, Regina Campbell and Katrina Prince.

Throughout this issue of Manor Living, we highlight several women who are living life to the fullest at Magnolia Manor. We also highlight the ministry behind the Edwards Baking Company, a faith-based, family organization once run by one of our residents. Rev. Dan Krupp, the St. Marys campus Chaplain, shares his story of how he began providing spiritual care to our residents and why he continues to do so each day. Pat Bashlor, the Service Coordinator at Magnolia Manor on the Coast, explains why she and many of our staff see their roles at Magnolia Manor as more than just a job. They see it as an opportunity to impact other people’s lives, including mothers who live at Magnolia Manor.

In addition to Mother’s Day, our wonderful residents, and dedicated staff, we have several other reasons to celebrate at Magnolia Manor. Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, GA, named their Nursing School Auditorium, the Magnolia Manor Nursing Auditorium in honor of our continued partnership. We congratulated Susie Fussell, Vice President of Resident Safety and Emergency Management, on receiving the Georgia Health Care Association 2022 Emergency Preparedness Award. We’re also honoring the life and legacy of Magnolia Manor Board Member, Russ Carreker, who lost his valiant battle with cancer on January 25, 2022. Russ’s leadership will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of working and serving with him.

It is our mission to serve seniors with love and support for a lifetime. Each year on Mother’s Day, churches across the South Georgia United Methodist Conference help us keep that mission going by collecting a special offering on behalf of the residents in need at Magnolia Manor. The gifts designated for Magnolia Manor are to ensure that those entrusted in our care will never have to leave if their resources run out. These gifts help provide a secure and loving environment through our charitable arm, The League of the Good Samaritan.

Currently, 50% of the Magnolia Manor residents who receive support from The League are women, and 100% of these women are mothers.

Whether you give through your church, by attending an event, or by giving directly to Magnolia Manor, we need and appreciate each gift. Magnolia Manor depends on the faithful generosity of our supporters. Your choice to give through money, time, and prayer helps support compassionate care that we provide to all of our residents. As Mother’s Day rolls around, I can’t help but think of the many memories that I cherish which are associated with this special day. I remember always going to church and having a bright red rose pinned on my lapel to honor my mother. Not only was I proud to wear this beautiful flower, but also it had the most delightful smell. As a young rambunctious boy, I certainly didn’t think twice about smelling the rose because I was off looking for the next adventure. My, how things change!

I had a mentor who told me when my son was born 29 years ago, “Ty, now time will fly because you have something to mark it with.” Boy, was he right! It seems just like yesterday, we were learning to ride a bike, playing ball, and hunting together for the first time. Often, I tell my wife that I do not know if I appreciated or valued all the little things that life offered when our children were young. I didn’t take notice of all the events and was not always present in every moment. With our fast-paced technological world, we can get too consumed with our busy lives and miss the small things in life that God has provided to fill our souls to the deepest level. Rarely do we take the time to absorb what is good and of immediate importance right around us.

Last year, I was fortunate to coach a girls’ State Championship basketball team. Over the years, my dad, who was and still is a very successful coach, would tell me to enjoy the wins and don’t move on to the next game too fast. Knowing this was my last year of coaching, I wanted to stop and cherish the moments and not rush too quickly past the victories. I have learned over the years that it is important to take the time to absorb what is good and enjoy all the blessings that are right around us. I remind myself not to think too far ahead and let my mind wander to something else.

I have always been a coach who wanted my team mentally prepared and totally focused, but at this State Championship game, I wanted the girls to also relish the moment along with me. As they began to announce the starting line-ups in the packed and energetic arena, I did something that I had never done before. I told the girls to look up and take in the atmosphere and enjoy the sights and sounds because not everyone gets to experience this feeling. The girls had worked too hard…they needed to take a deep breath, look around, and enjoy the moment before the game would tip-off. Life is too short not to stop and celebrate.

This Mother’s Day, whether you wear a rose on your lapel, have flowers sent to your mom, or just smell the ones in your yard, I encourage you to live life to the fullest and with a deep appreciation and gratefulness for the world around us. Sometimes it is the smallest things that bring the most joy. Take time to relish the sights and sounds around you and let others know how much you appreciate them, especially your mom. If you can, tell your mother in person or call her to express your appreciation. Perhaps you can share your memories with your children, grandchildren, and family.

And while you are at it…stop and smell the roses. You’ll be glad you did.

loved watching them grow up, participating in different activities - and then going on to have families of their own. Now I enjoy hearing from the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren as well. Each one is unique, and they are all very near and dear to my heart,” Nadine shared.

Similar to how she is close to her grandchildren now, Nadine’s own mother was very instrumental in helping her raise her two daughters. Nadine’s mother graciously moved to Virginia to help her raise her first child when Rudolph was out at sea. She was also very helpful with the second child. Nadine’s mother taught her to have a strong work ethic and attend church service on Sundays. These are traits that she instilled in her own children.

The Smiths were very active in their local church and community. Nadine remembers making Christmas and Easter crafts together when her daughters were young.

They attended the Christmas program at church each year, and held a gift exchange afterwards. The Smiths also worked together in the garden, canning and freezing vegetables. If they weren’t attending a church service, a school event, or working in the garden, they were fishing. Nadine’s advice for mothers today is to “enjoy the

little moments and try not to get distracted by everything else that’s going on around you. Remember that each phase will pass, whether it’s good or bad.”

Nadine maintained this resiliency when she began experiencing back pain and other medical issues. She did some research and decided that moving into a senior living community was the best option for her. In addition to aiding with her health conditions, she felt that a senior living community would give her the companionship and a sense of community with other seniors that she was looking for. After touring Magnolia Manor South in Moultrie, Nadine felt it was just what she needed. She made the move in 2016, and has been a resident ever since.

With this fund, Magnolia Manor maintains a promise that no resident will have to leave their home if they can no longer afford to stay. Offering this program allows us to give back and maintain the legacies that many of our residents like Nadine Smith have built through the years.

Our communities are about life and living...

In life, we go through different stages. Some stages include painful lessons learned the hard way, while others involve victorious moments which make every hardship worthwhile.

Regardless of what stage of life you’re in, we believe in living life to the fullest at Magnolia Manor. Thomas Joel Edwards, a resident at our St. Marys campus, uses faith to help him through each phase in life.

In 1950, Joel’s father established the Edwards Baking Company in Atlanta, GA. As a child, Joel helped in the bakery until he went off to college.

After two years in school, he returned to help his father run the bakery. He was an apprentice for ten years where he learned the significance of character. Veterans in the company were influential in teaching him about honesty and the concept of right and wrong.

“I was never qualified to be the head baker or run the company.

But I worked with some of the wisest people, and they taught me everything good about being a leader,” explained Joel.

“I also learned that we all have gifts that serve a purpose.”

The bakery’s foundation was built on the slogan, “The closest

yet to homemade,” which is why each pie was baked with quality in mind. Joel made frequent trips to purchase fresh ingredients such as milk, eggs, and cottonseed oil from local farms. In addition to serving up delicious desserts, Edwards Baking Company served as a vehicle for ministry. One way they shared their faith was through their custom-made pie pans with Bible scriptures inscribed on the bottom. They also created the Christopher Edwards Foundation where they provided support to fellow Christians. One of their projects was an annual art contest for upcoming artists. The winner received a scholarship and an opportunity to have their artwork featured on the Easter cards for the year.

“When we were naming the foundation, we learned that our original idea was already in use.

So, we decided to add the name ‘Christopher’ because it meant ‘bearer of Christ.’ It symbolized everything the foundation stood for,” Joel explained.

Joel met many people who were instrumental in the success of the bakery and the foundation, like his wife, Sara, and best friend, Robert Article continued on page 10

Dear Readers, I often look at my little girls and think, “This is my favorite age.” This usually occurs when I see my girls learning new things, growing, and maturing. I know that these days are the building blocks to the adults they will become.

Motherhood is filled with ups and downs, and I believe all mothers cycle through worries, struggles, blessings, and joys with their children. As the seasons of life change, none of the emotions we experience are new, just different—different worries, struggles, blessings, and joys. Mrs. Nadine Smith is a mother and a resident at our Moultrie campus. She recently shared some advice for mothers, “Enjoy the little moments and try not to be distracted by everything going on at the time. Remember each phase will pass (good or bad), and you can’t go back.” This helps us to remember that all of the experiences we have with our children are what make motherhood the most wonderful, crazy, joyful gift.

Around Mother’s Day, we enjoy hearing stories about motherhood from our residents and how their role in their children’s lives transitioned as they became grandmothers. Even though a mother’s role may change through the years, motherhood will always be a gift. In the same way, we hope to continue giving our residents the support they need at Magnolia Manor. Magnolia Manor is unique because of our faith values, but it is the League of the Good Samaritan that really sets us apart from other senior living communities. The League provides financial assistance to residents that have outlived their savings. It also supports our chaplaincy program that cares for the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all residents. For Mrs. Nadine, this is what makes life at Magnolia Manor worthwhile, “I’m happy to be a part of Magnolia Manor and everything it stands for. The faith aspect of care is important to me and giving back to the community through programs like the League of the Good Samaritan is a big part of that.”

Healthy mind, body and spirit For many seniors, staying active is the key to a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Here at Magnolia Manor we encourage our residents to maintain an active lifestyle. Lucille Davis, a resident at our St Simons Island Campus, has been staying active all her life.

Lucille moved to Columbus, Georgia when she was six years old. She and her family began attending services at Rose Hill Methodist Church, where she first met her husband, Emmett Davis. Even though Lucille and Emmett grew up together in the church, it wasn’t until after finishing college that they began to date.

The happy couple married in 1956. Emmett began his career as the associate minister in Albany. He was the pastor at churches in Marshallville, Savannah, Hinesville, Cochran, St. Simons, and Hawkinsville.

As the couple moved from community to community, their family grew. They had three wonderful children, Mary, Emmett III, and Kathy.

After her husband passed away in 1979, Lucille decided to move from Columbus to LaGrange, a town 45 minutes

north of Columbus. This would allow her to be closer to her son, who was a fireman in the city, and daughter attending school at LaGrange College. It was around this time that the family developed a love for riding motorcycles.

One day, Lucille decided to visit her daughter, Mary, who was living in Jacksonville, FL. Mary had plans to take her motorcycle to St. Augustine for repairs and asked Lucille to accompany her. Lucille agreed to go, and instantly, she fell in love with the thrill of riding motorcycles.

“I thought to myself, this is fun,” reminisced Lucille. “But riding on the back was a bit uncomfortable. I was so sore afterwards. So, I thought, if I had my own motorcycle I could ride with her instead of on the back.”

On the way back to Jacksonville, they stopped by a Honda dealership to look at a few motorcycles. Lucille didn’t know how to drive motorcycles, so she had her daughter test drive one for her. After receiving her daughter’s stamp of approval, Lucille bought the bike on the spot. Over the next several weeks, her daughter began teaching her how to drive.

“When I first started, I drove into the neighbor’s shrubs,” smiled Lucille. “My daughter got me out of there, and we rode down the street. When we got to the corner of the street, I didn’t know how to turn the bike. I ended up driving all over a lady’s flowerbed. It took me a while, but my daughter worked with me until I learned to ride it.”

Lucille enjoyed several other adventures on her motorcycle. She even decided to purchase a larger bike with more speed. Unfortunately, Lucille had to have surgery and the motorcycle became more difficult for her to manage. She made a promise to her children that she would sell it before she got hurt. At the age of 84, she kept her promise, and sold the bike.

Lucille also enlisted the help of instructors from a motorcycle riding school in Jacksonville, Florida. As she learned more and became familiar with her bike, the family started going on motorcycle trips together.

“I rode it for 10 years,” said Lucille. “I loved it!

“We had a game called Finance, which was like Monopoly but a faster moving game,” Lucille recalled. “We played Anagrams. I think it was the forerunner of Scrabble. You make words. I’ve had that game since I was 10 years

Pat Bashlor, a Service Coordinator at our Richmond Hill campus is an exceptional example of the wonderful employees that we are privileged to have at Magnolia Manor.

Pat grew up in Portal, GA, a small town outside of Statesboro. She later moved to Richmond Hill after marrying and starting a family. While raising her two sons, Pat worked in the truck driving industry. Traveling to new places was exciting for Pat, but she wasn’t fond of spending long hours on the road. She decided she needed a career change. That’s when her mother-in-law told her about an opening at Magnolia Manor that she might be interested

in. Pat looked further into the position and decided to join the Magnolia Manor on the Coast team in September of 2012.

“At first, I wasn’t sure about working in senior living care. I had taken care of my grandmother, but this was different. As time went on, I came to love it. I got to know the residents and how awesome they are!” exclaimed Pat. Pat started out in the housekeeping department, cleaning residents’ rooms and keeping the common areas in tip-top shape. She eventually found herself helping fellow staff members in other areas where needed. Her handy skills especially proved to be essential in the maintenance department. When it comes to the residents, no minor repair is too hard for Pat. Her eagerness to help is what fuels her.

“The residents grow on you, and you want to help them in any way that you can,” shared Pat. Working in the senior living industry isn’t easy, but Pat has discovered tips that enhance the work experience. Along Article continued on page 24

with having respect and compassion for the elderly, Pat advises anyone who works in senior living care to “maintain a good attitude by remembering that the seniors are the main focus.” She makes it her goal to honor the residents’ requests when tidying up their rooms or responding to maintenance work orders. Pat ensures that the residents are satisfied by tailoring her services to fit their needs.

“The residents are all different. Some aren’t particular while others are very particular about what they want. I’ve learned them, and I know what to expect when I respond to a call for help,” stated Pat. It’s evident that Pat’s favorite part about working at Magnolia Manor is the residents.

But she also appreciates the faith-based

aspect of the organization and the familyoriented nature of the work environment.

“It feels good to work in an organization that allows me to display my faith. It helps to be around other believers. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with at Magnolia Manor. We’re like a family here,” stated Pat. We are proud to have Pat Bashlor and many other employees as members of the Magnolia Manor Family. CREATIVE CORNER Residents at Magnolia Manor show us each day that there are many ways to be creative.

Frances Messer, a resident at our Americus campus, has a keen eye and talent for envisioning potential in preowned treasures. Frances grew up in the small, historic city of Cuthbert, GA. She always had a love for history and was named the class historian for Cuthbert High School in 1963. Shortly after graduating from high school, Frances married Leonard Earl Messer.

The two lived in Cuthbert where Frances worked as the Records Technician at Patterson Hospital.

Frances enjoyed working at the hospital but desired a change in career. So, her husband, Leonard, encouraged her to

go back to school. While in school, one of Frances’ teachers noticed that she had natural skills that were pertinent for a librarian position. With her husband’s and teacher’s encouragement, Frances decided to study Library Science. Frances obtained her associate degree at Andrew College in 1986, and completed her Bachelor’s degree at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in 1988. She then went on to receive her master’s degree at Florida State University (FSU) in 1990.

Frances’ education and love for history resulted in a long, successful career as a librarian.

She’s worked at Stewart County Elementary School and at the Clay County Library in Fort Gaines. She also served as the Director of the Kinchafoonee

After her husband fell ill, Frances retired to care for him. She soon realized she had more time on her hands than she had anticipated.

That’s when she got the inspiration to go into the antiquing business. She was familiar with the logistics of running a business, since she worked in her father’s grocery store as a child and operated her own store called Toggery Shoppe. She put her prior knowledge to good use and began establishing antique booths around west Georgia and in Alabama.

“I enjoy it. It’s a hobby. I don’t plan on becoming rich doing this, because then it would become work. And when it becomes work, it’s no longer fun,” explained Frances.

Although it may be a hobby for Frances, she

has grown to be quite a pro when it comes to finding the best antique items. She is a frequent attendee at estate sales, yard sales, and thrift shops. She also receives donations and consignments from individuals who are looking to downsize. Frances examines each item to ensure that it meets the necessary criteria to be sold in her antique shop.

“If it’s a glass dish or China, I check to see if it’s chipped. Chipped things don’t sell. I look at the condition and turn it over to see the name of the company that made it,” shared Frances.

Frances has discovered that most people who shop at her booths are tourists and prefer to purchase small items that are easy to travel with. As a result, old lamps, jewelry, and cookbooks are best-selling items at her shop.

marble material are popular as well. Many amazing and one-of-a-kind antique pieces have passed through Frances’ hands. But there’s one piece that stands out to her the most.

“I went to a festival in Columbus one year, and someone was selling a box of old books. When I looked through the box, I found a textbook that Frank Lloyd Wright, a well-known architect, had written. He had autographed it as a gift to someone in Columbus,” Frances recalled.

After her husband passed away, Frances closed a few of her shops and moved into an Independent Living apartment at Magnolia Manor in Americus. Since making the move in 2016, Frances has enjoyed the value of community and companionship.

“I came here because I needed a new life.

I’ve been very happy here. It’s a very nice place to live. I like my apartment and my

neighbors. I’ve made a lot of friends, and I have old friends here as well,” shared Frances.

Frances continues to operate a booth at the Antique Mall in Plains, GA. You can typically find her there every other week. When she isn’t selling hidden treasures at her antique booths or spending time with friends at the Manor, Frances enjoys traveling and researching genealogy. As a member of the Historical Society Committee in Cuthbert, GA, she helped write the Randolph County Georgia History novels for Volumes I and II. She is also an avid reader and writer, noting that writing daily is good exercise for mental health. GIVING In action...

We held our eighth annual John Gill Memorial Quail Hunt on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the illustrious Southern Woods Plantation in Sylvester, Georgia. With all the hard work from our staff and the wonderful dedication of our sponsors and the community, we were able to sell-out all 16 jeeps, which included 64 hunters. As a result, we raised $50,000 dollars for our Campus Safety Initiative.

“We had a great turnout for the hunt again this year with beautiful weather which was perfect for hunting quail,” exclaimed Kendall C. Stephens, Director of Annual Giving. “We were excited to sell-out our jeeps well before the hunt.”

This initiative encompasses physically securing our campuses and buildings. The money raised will go towards purchasing and installing security cameras as well as code keypads to improve safety measures for our residents. The security cameras will allow us to monitor exterior areas at all of our campuses including entrances, exits, and parking lots. The keypads will allow for single-point entry and exit locations for authorized use.

We are truly blessed to have eight corporate sponsors for this year. In addition, we also had four event sponsors for the quail hunt.

Russell “Russ” Carreker September 4, 1964 - January 25, 2022 Russ Carreker was a devoted member of the Board of Trustees for Magnolia Manor from October 29, 2014, until his death in January.

Russ’ decision to accept the nomination to Magnolia Manor’s Board of Trustees is one he took very seriously, and in doing so, he supported Magnolia Manor by freely lending his wisdom and energies to the Board’s leadership. Whenever asked, he willingly accepted any role he was asked to fill, including Chairman of the Finance Committee. Most recently, Russ was instrumental in working with Magnolia Manor’s leadership team to design and develop The Lodge at Magnolia Manor, our newest project planned for the Columbus Community. He was a faithful advocate for Magnolia Manor, and he demonstrated his strong commitment to our organization, even attending board meetings during his treatments for cancer.

Russ’ life is reflected in the communities and organizations where he volunteered and through his ties that earned him friends through the many places he served. His accomplishments, endeavors, and successes will long be remembered by those who had the privilege to work and serve along-side him.

Russ is survived by his wife, Patti, and daughter, Avery, of Columbus; and his parents, Doug and Joyce Carreker of Americus; along with two sisters and extended family. Magnolia Manor is grateful for the leadership Russ provided during his tenure as a Board of Trustee member. We deeply grieve his passing, but we’ll always remember and honor his legacy of servant leadership which positively impacted this organization for years to come.
