IhavevisceralchildhoodmemoriesofgoingtotheBelleIsleIndycarracesinDetroit withmyDad.Thesmellofhigh-octaneracingfuel,burningrubber,domesticbeer, feelingthescorching-hotsummersunbouncingofftheasphalt Thepitch-bending soundsoftheFormulaOnecarsscreamingpastusatinsanespeeds,theroarofthe crowdatthecheckeredflag.Wildlydangerous,everyboundarybeingtested,allfora chanceatthewinner’scircle.Thiscompetitivespiritinspiredmetowriteafanfare thatpushestheboundariesoftempo,range,&technicaldemand,andgivesthe conductor,performers,andlisteneraniceadrenalinerushtoo.Ialsowantedtopush myselftowritethemostexciting,wildlychaoticmusicthatIcouldimagine.Fast, loud,andalittlebitreckless.

JohnPhilipSousawasborninWashington,D C onNovember6,1854 Hisfather, JohnAntonioSousa,wasborninSpainofPortugueseparents,andhismother,Marie ElizabethTrinkaus,wasborninBavaria.

SousareceivedhisearlyeducationinWashingtonpublicschools,whilesimultaneously studyingmusicataprivateconservatory.Atage13,heenlistedintheU.S.Marine Bandasa"boy"(apprentice)musician,buthealsocontinuedhisprivatemusicstudies. HismostimportantteacherwasGeorgeFelixBenkert,withwhomhestudiedviolin, harmony, and composition. After serving seven years with the marines, he was discharged.Thereafter,heperformedasaviolinistandconductorinvarioustheater orchestrasinWashingtonandPhiladelphia.

AlthoughSousaisstereotypedasamarchcomposer,hecomposedmusicofmany forms,including15operettas.Amonghismanyoriginalworksforbandaresuites, humoresques,fantasies,descriptivepieces,anddances.Inadditiontotheover200 songsofhisoperettas,hecomposed70othervocalworks,andmanyofthesevocal worksweretranscribedforusewiththeSousaBand

In Memoriam (1881)

Washington’sbest-knownMasonin1881wasPresidentJamesA.Garfield,whowasa memberofColumbiaCommanderyNo.2,KnightsTemplar.Sousawasalsotobelong tothissameorganizationfiveyearslater,butduringGarfield’spresidencyhewas beingworkedinthelowerdegreesofMasonry.Sousawasnotwellacquaintedwith thePresident,buthewasgreatlyshakenatthenewsofhisassassination.Inthe autobiographyhetellsofhearingpaperboysshoutingthenewsofGarfield’sdeath.It wasunexpected,becausethePresidenthadbeenrecoveringsatisfactorilyfromthe gunshotwoundoftwomonthsearlier.Shocked,Sousarosefromhisbedandwent outsideforawalk.

Withtheeventweighingheavilyonhismindhewalkedall throughthenightandintothenextmorning.Whenhereturned homeheimmediatelycommittedthedirge“InMemoriam”to paper.ThedirgewasplayedbytheU.S.MarineBandasthe President’sbodywasreceivedinWashingtonandthenagainat its final resting place in Cleveland. It was afterward played infrequentlybytheMarineBanduntilhalfacenturylater,when itwasplayedwhileJohnPhilipSousa’sbodywasbeingescorted tothegraveinCongressionalCemetery.

Kincaid Rabb is an award-winning composer, specializing in storytelling and immersion through music. Whether designing an original narrative to be communicatedthroughmusicoraddingamusicaldimensiontoanexistingnarrative, Kincaidcreatesascorethatimmersesaudiencesinthetimeandplaceofthestory world.Kincaidproducesworksthattrapezeartisticdisciplines,curatingperformances thatseamlesslyintegratedifferentsensoryexperiences.

Kincaid’scollaborationshaveincludedParadiseWinds,The Experiment,the DriftwoodQuintet,KontraDuo,KeyedKontraptions,DuoR2,theBrelbyTheatre Company, and the faculty and students at the University of Arizona and the UniversityofNevada,LasVegas.TheirprincipalteachershaveincludedDouglas Harbin,DanielAsia,PamelaDecker,DiegoVega,andJenniferBellor.

CurrentlyresidinginSanDiego,California,Kincaidgraduatedin2021withaMaster ofMusicinCompositionattheUniversityofNevada,LasVegas,wheretheyhelda graduateassistantshipintheory,composition,andmusicology.Theygraduatedfrom theUniversityofArizonawithaBachelorofMusicinCompositionin2017.Kincaid isaffiliatedwithASCAPandisaNextGenMemberoftheThemedEntertainment Association.Kincaid’smusicisexclusivelyavailablethroughTrevcoMusic.

PeacefullysituatedonastretchoflandalongMissionBeachinSanDiego,California, BelmontParkopenedonJuly4th,1925.

OriginallydevelopedbyJohnD SpreckelsastheMissionBeachAmusementCenter todrivethebusinessofrecreationandamusementtoMissionBay,theparkstill operatestoday.TheflagshipattractionofBelmontParkistheGiantDipper,a75-foot woodenrollercoasteroriginallyconstructedin1925.Itisoneofonlytworoller coastersdesignedbyFrankPriorandFrederickChurchstilloperatingontheWest Coast,anditwasregisteredasaNationalHistoricLandmarkonFebruary27,1987.

Asaudienceslistento“TheGiantDipper”,theywillhearthe soundofthechainasitliftsthetrainofexcitedpassengersup, thenexperiencethethunderingoftherollercoasterasit traverseswindingswitchbacksandthrillinghillsThispieceis aboutexhilarating,unbridledjoy,anticipation,fear,andfunexactlywhatarollercoastershouldbe.“TheGiantDipper”is the fourth movement of “At Belmont Park”, which was commissionedbyLaurieBrownfortheGreenValleyConcert Band.

FrankTicheliisanAmericancomposerandconductor.Hejoinedthefacultyofthe UniversityofSouthernCalifornia'sThorntonSchoolofMusicin1991,wherehe servedasProfessorofCompositionuntil2023 From1991to1998,Ticheliwas ComposerinResidenceofthePacificSymphony,andhestillenjoysacloseworking relationshipwiththatorchestraandtheirmusicdirector,CarlSt.Clair.Ticheliiswell knownforhisworksforconcertband,manyofwhichhavebecomestandardsinthe repertoire.Inadditiontocomposing,hehasappearedasguestconductorofhismusic atCarnegieHall,atmanyAmericanuniversitiesandmusicfestivals,andincities throughouttheworld,includingSchladming,Austria,attheMid-EuropeMusic Festival;LondonandManchester,England,withtheMeadowsWindEnsemble; Singapore,withtheSingaporeArmedForcesCentralBand;andnumerouscitiesin Japan,withtheBandsofAmericaNationalHonorBand.

An American Elegy (1999)

AnAmericanElegyis,aboveall,anexpressionofhope.Itwascomposedinmemory ofthosewholosttheirlivesatColumbineHighSchoolonApril20,1999,andto honorthesurvivors.Itisofferedasatributetotheirgreatstrengthandcourageinthe faceofaterribletragedy.Ihopetheworkcanalsoserveasonereminderofhow fragileandpreciouslifeisandhowintimatelyconnectedweallareashumanbeings. Iwasmovedandhonoredbythiscommissioninvitation,anddeeplyinspiredbythe circumstancessurroundingit.Rarelyhasaworkrevealeditselftomewithsuch powerfulspeedandclarity.Thefirsteightbarsofthemainmelodycametomefully formedinadream.Virtuallyeveryelementoftheworkwasdiscoveredwithinthe spanofabouttwoweeks.Theremainderofmytimewasspentrefining,developing, andorchestrating

An American Elegy was commissioned by the Columbine CommissioningFund,aspecialprojectsponsoredbytheAlpha IotaChapterofKappaKappaPsiattheUniversityofColorado onbehalfoftheColumbineHighSchoolBand.Contributors totheFundincludedmembers,chapters,alumni,andfriendsof KappaKappaPsiandTauBetaSigmaNationalHonoraryBand FraternityandSorority.

JohnMackey(he/him)haswrittenfororchestras(BrooklynPhilharmonic,NewYork YouthSymphony),theater(DallasTheaterCenter),andextensivelyfordance(Alvin AileyAmericanDanceTheater,ParsonsDanceCompany,NewYorkCityBallet), butthemajorityofhisworkforthepastdecadehasbeenforwindensembles(the fancy name for concert bands), and his band catalog now receives annual performancesnumberinginthethousands.

In 2014, he became the youngest composer ever inducted into the American BandmastersAssociation.In2018,hereceivedtheWladimir&RhodaLakondAward fromtheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters.HeresidesinSanFrancisco, California,withhisspouse,A E Jaques,aphilosopherwhoworksontheethicsof artificialintelligenceforMIT,andalsotitlesallofhispieces;andtheircats,Noodle andBloop.

Strange Humors (2006)

ThefirstversionofStrangeHumorswasastudentpieceforstringquartetand djembethatMackeywrotewhilepursuinghisgraduatedegreeatTheJuilliard School. It was later adapted for use by the Parsons Dance Company, with choreographybyRobertBattle.ItstranscriptioncameatthebehestofRichardFloyd onbehalfoftheAmericanBandmastersAssociation Thepiecerepresentsamerging ofmusicalcultures--themodalmelodiesandsyncopatedrhythmsofmiddleEastern musicwiththepercussiveaccompanimentofAfricandrumming.

Attheheartoftheworkliesthepulseofthedjembe,whichremainsfromtheoriginal version.Thedjembe,anhourglass-shapeddrumplayedwithbarehands,isamajor partofthecustomsofwestAfricancountriessuchasMaliandGuinea,wheredjembe ensemblesaccompanymanyfunctionalcelebrationsofsociety.

ThepieceopenswithasultryEnglishhornsolo,aline lacedwithPhrygianinfluencerepresentingthe"typical" melodiesofthemostnortheasternpartsoftheAfrican continent--mostnotablyEgypt,butalsopartsofthe Arabianpeninsula.

Dr. Christine Lundahl is a dynamic and accomplished conductor with a wealth of experienceworkingwithensemblesofalllevels.UponmovingtoSouthernCaliforniainFall of2023,Dr.LundahltookontheroleofArtisticDirectorfortheGoldWindSymphony, conductedtheSymphonicWindsatCalPolyPomonaandtheSymphonyOrchestraatLa SierraUniversity,andtaughtvariousmusiceducationclassesatbothinstitutions.

SheisaregularguestwiththePacificSymphonyYouth Orchestraandishighlysought-afterasanadjudicatorand clinicianbothinSouthernCaliforniaandacrossthecountry. ShewasrecentlyappointedtobethenewDirectorofBandsat CalStateLAandwillbeginthatpositioninAugust.

Dr.LundahlcompletedaDMAinWindBandConductingat theUniversityofMichiganunderthementorshipofworldrenownedconductor,MichaelHaithcock.Herresearchand publicationsdelveintothetopicsofdiverseprogrammingand musiceducationinTitle1publicschools.Hereducation includes an MM in Instrumental Conducting from the UniversityofSouthFloridaandaBMEinMusicEducation fromFloridaStateUniversity.

Travis Muñoz isabassoonistfromWestCovina,California.Hehasbeenstudyingbassoonsince 2004,graduatingfromtheLosAngelesCountyHighSchoolfortheArtsunderthedirectionof Dr.CarolynBeckandearnedadegreefromSouthernOregonUniversity.

TravishasperformedwithmanygroupsinSouthernOregonincludingtheAshlandCityBand, CamelotTheatrePitOrchestra,RogueValleySymphonicBand,SouthernOregonConcert Band,andtheSouthernOregonUniversityWindEnsemble.Asidefromlargeensembles,Travis shareshisloveformusicthroughchamberensemblesandisafoundingmemberofthe ColoraturaReedQuintet,LaForzatrio,and[Reedacted]clarinetensemble.

Traviswasaconductor'sassistantfortheSouthernOregon UniversityWindEnsembleandArtisticDirectoroftheNew HorizonsBand.

Currently,TravisservesasagraduateassistantforDr.Gene Moon,ispursuingamastersdegreedegreeininstrumental conducting,andcurrentlyplaysbassoonfortheCalBaptist UniversitySymphonyOrchestraandWindEnsemble.

Mr. Fritz isamusiceducatorwithawiderangeofexperience.Currently1of2 DirectorofBandsatEleanorRooseveltHighSchoolinEastvale,CA,Mr.Fritzleads theWindEnsemble&SymphonicWinds;theformerregardedasoneofthefinest highschoolconcertensemblesinthestateofCalifornia.Priortohisappointmentat ERHS,Mr.FritzwasAsst.DirectorofBandsatVistaMurrietaHighSchool(20182022)wherehewasintegralinpreparingtheGoldenAllianceMarchingBandfor theirfirstevertriptotheBandsofAmericaRegionalinSanAntonio,TX,widely regarded as the most competitive competition in the country. Prior to his appointmentwithVistaMurrietaHS,Mr.FritzwastheDirectorofBandsatAzusa HighSchool(2016-18)wherehisstudentsconsistentlyreceived“Superior”marksat festivalsandwerefrequentparticipantsinhonorbandsthroughoutthestate.

OutsideofhisresponsibilitiesasaDirector,Mr.FritzisStaffDirectorandBrass CaptionHeadforGoldDrumandBugleCorps.There,heleadsatalentedgroupof musiceducatorswhoarecommittedtoperformanceexcellence.Justrecently,Gold wasawardedBestBrassandearnedasilvermedalatthe2023DCIOpenClass ChampionshipsinIndianapolis,IN.

As a performer in DCI, Mr. Fritz played mellophonewithPacificCrestDrum&Bugle Corps (03', 04', 06') and the 2007 World ChampionBlueDevils.Mr.Fritzobtainedhis BachelorofArtsinMusicEducation,Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance, and Masters degree in Instrumental Conducting from California State University Fullerton, studyingunderJimRotter&Dr.MitchFennell.

DirectorofBandsandactiveLosAngelesfreelancehornist, Mr. Rhees cameto ERHS in 2019. Mr. Rhees holds the degrees of Bachelor of Music in Horn PerformanceaswellasaBachelorofArtsinInstrumentalMusicEducationfrom CaliforniaStateUniversity,Fullerton.Mr.Rheescompletedpost-graduateworkat theUniversityofSouthernCaliforniawhereheearnedaMasterofMusicdegreein HornPerformance.

Asamusiceducator,Mr.Rheesbegancoachingbrasschambermusicinpublic schoolsin1982.Hewasonthestaffoftheworld-renownedSantaClaraVanguard Drum&BugleCorpsofSantaClara,California.Inhisfirstyearteachingthecorps, Mr.RheeshelpedtheVanguardtowinthe1989DrumCorpsInternationalWorld Championship with a record setting high score. He was the Head of Brass InstructionfortheTenrikyoAimachiBandofNagoya,Japanwherethebandwon sixAllJapanNationalChampionships-andtiedonscoreforanother-inonlyone decade.Thesewerethefirstsuchtitlesinthegroup’s60-yearhistory.Priorto arrivingatERHS,Mr.RheeswastheDirectorofInstrumentalMusicatHerbert HooverHighSchoolofGlendale,CA.,aprogramofonly100totalmusicians populatingtwoconcertbands,jazz,stringorchestra,marchingband,basketball band,winterdrumline,andcolorguard.Inhistenyearsleadingtheprogram,the HooverTornadoMarchingBandwontheCaliforniaStateBandChampionships fourconsecutiveyears,toppingbandsmanytimestheirsize,andmaintaininga winningstreakwithintheirdivisionofnearlyfiveyears.
