Dear Friends of Special Olympics Montana, “We’re a part of something special.” All of us! Why? Because these 2014 State Summer Games mark a time and place where everyone wins! In any given competition, whether swimming 50 meter freestyle, powerlifting 300 pounds, running a 1,500 meter footrace, or cycling 5K, athletes will give their personal best effort. Athletes will collect medals and ribbons for their well-deserved achievements. Finishing first or last place in competition, however, is not the ultimate goal. In Special Olympics the ultimate goal is about commitment to training, hard work, and doing one’s best. It’s about training for life on the playing field so one can excel off the playing field. These Games are really about a gold “mettle” performance, where by definition, athletes have strength of character and exercise determination, spirit, guts and grit. It’s about a resolve to never give up. It’s about encouraging each other to have courage. It’s about enabling each other to be able. Call it what you like, but when we support each other, we all win. This is the heart of Special Olympics. With the generous support of nearly 2,000 volunteers from the Yellowstone Valley who are led by Games’ Co-Directors Rick McCann of First Interstate Bank and Steve Wahrlich of the Best Western Clock Tower Inn, these Games are creating winning athletes, teams and communities. Together, we are producing communities of acceptance, respect, and inclusion; we are revealing the champion in all of us! Leaders who advocate community service and inclusion Jessica Hasler has dedicated her life to a cause she not only believes in, but lives for. While she competes in the 400-meter race, shot put, and bowling during the State Summer Games, Jessica also models for fellow athletes and communities just exactly how Special Olympics is designed to work. About five years ago, Jessica received training to become a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, leading a charge to build and refine a culture of inclusion and respect throughout Montana. In March, Jessica was nominated and awarded a three-year term as the Athlete Ambassador for the Montana Law Enforcement Torch Run. Similarly, and from another platform, the State Summer Games Premier Sponsor, First Interstate Bank, leads through dedication and commitment to help athletes like Jessica achieve their best. In their final year of a threeyear sponsorship of the State Summer Games in Billings, First Interstate Bank’s support is stronger than ever. The significance of the financial and human resources they’ve provided can’t be understated, and the example they’ve set is profound. First Interstate Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Garding has a long personal history of demonstrating this kind of dedication to organizations he believes in. More than 40 years ago, as a new college graduate, Ed decided he wanted to align himself with a company founded on strong values and grassroots culture. “I knew I wanted a job in the banking business, and, specifically, I wanted this bank,” he told the Billings Gazette when he was selected as the CEO of First Interstate Bank. Ed and Jessica share a strong drive to emphasize the importance of community service and gather support through the influence they have in their community. While Jessica speaks at Billingsarea schools to recruit volunteer support for State and Area Games, Ed gives his employees incentives to participate year-round in any way they can. “At First Interstate, we encourage all of our employees to donate their time and talents to organizations they believe in,” Ed said. The result: scores of First Interstate Bank employees spend countless hours preparing to host more than 1,000 athletes from 68 teams who will compete in the State Summer Games. Hundreds more employees will be scattered throughout Billings at various events, essentially providing more than just volunteer hours. They are making this event happen, leading a charge for the communities they serve to get involved beside them. Opening Ceremonies Highlights May 14, 2014 at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark Billings Special Olympics athlete Krystin Thompson will join Rob Griggs to emcee a rousing Special Olympics State Summer Games Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, May 14 at the Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. Nearly 1,050 competitors from 68 teams will fill the arena in a joyous parade of athletes beginning at 5:45 p.m., welcomed by the Colstrip, Roundup and Billings Central High Cheerleaders, the Billings Roller Derby Dames and the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard. Pre-show entertainment at 6:30 p.m. features tal-
ented local performers and the hilarious ZOOperstars along with the musical talents of the High Street Band. These performers will ramp up the energy while the arena fills for the 7 p.m. show. Emcees officially kick off opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. with the arrival of Governor Steve Bullock as Honorary Head Coach, along with Honorary Chairperson Ed Garding from First Interstate Bank. The show continues with the ZOOperstars fun-filled antics and gymnastic stunts plus more dance and vocal performances. The
Flame of Hope will make its inspiring arrival with more than 100 law enforcement officers forming the Circle of Honor. The evening of family entertainment is free and open to the public. Production credits go to Rob Griggs with direct support from Vicki Davison, Mindy Gunther, Roz Winchell, Mary Largess, Karla Hartford and Lisa Moen along with countless performers and behind the scenes volunteers.

"I would have to say that I have never seen the kind of love and camaraderie come out of an event like this before," McCann said. "There is no way that you can measure that. You could never measure that value of what you put in compared to what you get out of it."

While the more than 75 teams from around Montana will begin to arrive and check in on May 13 and some competition begins the next morning, the games will officially kick off May 14 at 7 p.m. with the Parade of Athletes and Opening Ceremonies, capped by the lighting of the Flame of Hope by the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Wahrlich have co-directed the Billings Games for all three years. Both men said that seeing the athletes in their element on the SOMT courts and fields, combined with the dedication of volunteers and management, is a heartwarming experience and one that provides more than just a dollar value to the community of Billings.
