HISTORY OF PACIFIC STEEL & RECYCLING Pacific’s road to becoming a steel and recycling giant began as a one-man operation in Spokane, Wash. Joe Thiebes emigrated from Germany in the 1880s and followed his family’s business tradition of trading hides and furs. Soon, Thiebes sent his son, also named Joe, to the wilds of Montana. And in the early 1920s, the younger Thiebes officially founded Pacific Hide & Fur Depot in Great Falls. During World War I, the company expanded beyond furs and hides into collecting ferrous and nonferrous scrap. And this scrap metals venture eventually led the firm to branch out in the 1950s into sales of new steel products. The Thiebes family business continued into the third generation, with another son – again named Joe – joining forces with his father as the company steadily opened additional locations under the Pacific Hide & Fur name.

The Thiebes family owned the company and the senior Joe Thiebes continued to serve as chairman of the board until his death in 1988, though he wasn’t involved in Pacific’s day-to-day management. The end of daily family involvement in the business came with the death of the younger Joe Thiebes in 1982. However, Pacific is dedicated to carrying on the Thiebes family tradition of “shooting straight”. Today, Pacific is an employee-owned corporation with 46 branch offices in Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana, and Alberta, Canada. Pacific has recently opened a brand new, state of the art facility at 3385 Coulson Road in Billings. This location includes a 3,000-horsepower material shredder and a Metso shear on 20-plus acres of land. It also has a new, customer-friendly, drive through recycling area for your convenience.

The 3,000-horsepower shredder in Lockwood is much like Pacific’s shredder outside of Boise, Idaho in Mayfield. It shreds cars, trucks and appliances from all over. “This shredder is designed for 10,000 to 12,000 tons a month,” stated Pat Kons, Vice President of Scrap Operations. The shredder can completely shred a car within 30 seconds, sorting out all of the prepared iron. Within two minutes and 30 seconds, the remaining material is sorted in a downstream flow. The machine uses magnetism and reverse magnetism as well as pressurized blasts of air to sort out the metals. The four-acre Lockwood site near two gravel pits is located 2 ½ miles northeast of Johnson Lane along Coulson Road between Interstate 90 and the Yellowstone River. The Great Falls-based company, owned by its employees, operates 46 recycling sites in 10 states, including a dozen in Montana and one in Canada. (Right) Dust vacuum on Pacific’s Shredder.

PACIFIC RECYCLING’S SHEAR At our new location at 3385 Coulson Road, we also have a Metso Lindemann Shear. It is brand new and extremely efficient in almost every aspect. Its intelligent design has decreased downtime and increased safety. Lindemann has continued where others took off creating fewer malfunctions, more safety and more efficiency when cutting. Scrap processing machines are, by definition,
constantly subject to high stresses. Therefore, Lindemann places great value on workmanship and technology. Highly abrasion-resistant plates protect all parts and help reduce wear. With this piece of equipment, we can shear up to three times as much metal as before. With the help of this shear, we hope and strive to clean up the countryside and contribute to a greener society.

EARTH WEEK One week every year during Earth week, Pacific Recycling holds a special promotion on aluminum cans and whole cars to motivate the Billings community to Go Green. We hope the community responds by bringing in old junk cars so we can recycle them. This year we paid $.55 per pound on aluminum cans and took in more than 350,000 cans! We also paid $300 for a whole car, meaning it had to have an engine, transmission and other components. We have a state of the art drain rack that punches holes in the tanks and removes the fluids so they can be disposed of properly. It’s a win for the environment and helps keep our community clean. We recently moved to our new location at 3385 Coulson Road in Billings. We have a lot more room to operate at this location and that was a huge advantage to taking in so much extra material. We promote cans and cars during Earth week but every day we hope to see people bring their recyclables to Pacific. We have a donation area that is open during work hours. Anyone can stop by and drop off paper, plastic, cardboard, tin cans or aluminum cans; all of this material is sent to a mill to be reformed and reused. We buy anything made out of metal—from old farm equipment to cars of all sizes. We also take aluminum, stainless steel, copper wire, copper pipe, brass, old plumbing fixtures, and car and truck batteries.

PACIFIC STEEL & RECYCLING EMPLOYEES WORK HARD, TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR JOB Pacific Steel & Recycling is 100% employee-owned, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program) company. After five years, each employee is fully vested and completely owns their stock. Before this, an employee earns a percentage of their stock until reaching 100% after five years. It works like this; each year, every employee gets distributed a certain amount of stock in the company based on a percentage of what they get paid.
