ith two major annual events happening one week apart, Red Lodge thought it might as well make a festival of it.

Winter Fest combines Red Lodge Mountain’s Winter Carnival and the Ski-Joring National Finals with events happening almost every day in between. Beginning Friday, March 2, travelers can not only make a weekend of Red Lodge, but stay through the end of the festivities, Sunday, March 11.

“It’s an umbrella and venue to share all of the things that are going on,” said Kristen Hollum, Red Lodge Chamber of Commerce community volunteer. “We wanted to showcase and tie in other events to hope illustrate that it’s not just Winter Carnival.”

Backcountry Film Festival

Each year, Boise-based Winter Wildlands Alliance produces a Backcountry Film Festival to share with the Mountain West.

The Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is celebrating its 45th year as a nonprofit art organization. Housed in the historic train depot in Red Lodge, this recognized establishment provides support and inspiration to artists throughout the region. Space is provided in the galleries for artists to show and sell their art. In addition, the guild showcases new exhibitions each month. They offer art classes, lectures and workshops, plus organize art fairs and special events throughout the year.

The arts guild and gallery is free and open to the public. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday through April 30. Summer hours are May 1 through Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire and encourage all artists. Through reaching out, they provide art education and exposure to the visual, performing and literary arts for the benefit of the broadest possible audience.

EXHIBITIONS Through Feb. 28: Expressive Hand-Stitched Art Quilts by Marie Shirley-Jones A member’s show will be on view at the Arts Guild through the month of February. Shirley-Jones’s work is dyed fabric with layers of hand-stitching to create one-ofa-kind art quilts.

Through Feb. 28: Big Stuff “Big Stuff” will be a one-time opportunity for guild members to show large pieces of art that normally wouldn’t be displayed at the guild because of limited space.

Subject matter will vary.

March 5-30: Student Art Show The annual show includes work from students in Nye, Fishtail and Carbon County Schools.

Feb. 17: Learn to Dye: Techniques and Methods for Dyeing Cloth This adult workshop will be held in conjunction with the “Expressive Hand-Stitched Art Quilts” exhibition by Marie Shirley-Jones. Shirley-Jones, an avid textile artist, will instruct the workshop from 12 to 3 p.m. Students will learn how to prepare cloth before the dyeing process, experiment with dyeing techniques and how to use color. The final piece will be a table runner.

May 3-30: Spring Showers, Bring May Flowers and Welcome Wall “Spring Showers, Bring May Flowers” features members’ work along with a Welcome Wall display of art by new guild members Stephanie Rose, Sarah Means, Breck Martineau, Janice Polzin and Colette Kewitt. The opening reception for both exhibitions is Friday, May 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

April 12 & May 10: Paint-nSip through Art History Romanticism is the subject scheduled Thursday, April 12.

Each student will create an oil painting in vivid colors based on the artwork of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Romanticism in art looks at imaginative landscapes and turbulent seas with a focus on emotions of apprehension, horror and awe.

On Thursday, May 10, the session will focus on impressionism.

The artist whose work will be explored is Claude Monet (18401926) with the main focus on light and color patterns.

Each class will be instructed by local artist Carol Hartman and is held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the guild.

The cost is $35. All materials are provided. A beverage of choice can be brought by participants to enjoy during the class. Space is limited and registration is required.

April 27-28: Landscape Painting with John Potter workshop Landscape Painting with John Potter is a one-and-a-half day workshop where students will watch the artist demonstrate techniques, learn about composition, explore color mixing and have plenty of time to paint. Students must have some experience in oil painting and bring their own supplies. Potter has a background in painting and illustration but didn’t begin painting full-time until 2002. Potter says his favorite subject matter is the “rugged mountain scenery of the American West.” He has shown his work nationally and internationally with pieces in numerous private collections. The class will meet Friday, April 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the workshop is $85. A 10-percent discount will be given to members. Space is limited and registration is required.

Show everyone what “Red Lodge formal” really means this spring at Beartooth Billings Clinic Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year, Saturday, April 21.

Bolo ties are a wise decision for this upscale event, as everyone will be dressed to the Western nines.

Rock Creek Resort plays host and caterer as Billings’ band of doctors, The Midlife Chryslers, rock the house. And a wine tasting and live auction will not be too far

away from the fun, which begins at 5 p.m.

“We want to focus on gathering our ‘family’ together to celebrate how fortunate we are in Carbon County and count our many blessings, including our faithful benefactors and supporters,” foundation executive director Sara Urbanik said in a press release.

Limited individual tickets are available at $100 each; sponsorships start at $350. Attendees are guaranteed table seating.

Proceeds benefit the clinic’s outpatient surgical services and the foundation’s permanent endowment. Through ticket sales, sponsorships and a live auction, the foundation hopes to raise $200,000.

“Those who can’t attend the Beartooth Ball, but would still like to part of this annual fundraising event, can make a tax-deductible donation in a variety of ways,” the press release said.

Red Lodge Mountain is the end of the line for outdoor fun.

Every Saturday through April 14, RLM hosts Pints & Poses Yoga taught by Sunshine Yoga’s Maddie Ringer. The $15 admission cost includes one pint of beer, but all ages and abilities are welcome.

The RLM ski patrol works effortlessly to ensure safety on the slopes, so ski bums are encouraged to give back at the Grizzly Peak Gala Feb. 17 at Beartooth Elks Lodge.

From 6 to 10 p.m., attendees can expect live music, dinner, raffle prizes and a silent auction. The kid-friendly fundraiser costs $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Donations received for the silent

auction include Sego skis, a Chico Hot Springs getaway, products from dozens of local stores and much more. Big Jim and the Twins will be performing while the ski patrol cooks and serves up Italian cuisine.

The Beartooth Park Series completes March 3, the same day as Winter Carnival. The competitor with the most combined points wins a summer season pass to Beartooth Basin.

Wax nostalgic with RLM March 10 at its Throw Back & Throw Big event, where ‘90s ski tricks are encouraged on the slopes. Pit Viper and Red Lodge Ales sponsor the free event where big air tricks, vintage style, mullets and fanny packs are welcome. The Big Air competition is open to all ages and abilities

and costumes are encouraged for the contest in the Bierstube.

Also happening March 10 is the free Sego Skis Demo Day, where skiers can try American-made skis before they buy with a photo ID and credit card.

And RLM understands that you have to get ski bums started young, so there’s a Mini Monster Jam event planned March 24, where kids 12 and under can compete. Helmets are required.

With events happening each week through the end of the regular ski season, there’s no reason not to pack up your gear and get moving on the mountain.

If the thought of beer has you drooling like a dog, you might as well bring your pup to Red Lodge Ales for its annual Monster Dog Pull, Sunday, Feb. 25.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a $5 entry fee for each canine. Costs cover dog toys, which are awarded to the fastest dog in each weight category.

There are six weight classes.

Canines start pulling kegs on the roughly 60-foot course at noon. Bystanders are encouraged to sip on some beers while they watch from the sidelines.

More than 100 ceramic artists are featured at the Red Lodge Clay Center annually. Their work includes functional pottery, sculpture, home décor and unique gifts.

Exhibits of contemporary ceramic art rotate monthly. Through Feb. 25, the center features Kenyon Hansen’s solo exhibition of functional pottery.

According to a press release, his work “blends the subtle” and shows “distinctive effects of soda-fired clay with a strong sense of structure, color and form.”

Beginning March 2, the STAIN exhibit curated by Matthew Kelleher will be on display. An opening reception is planned March 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. for the selection. Featured artists include Shoko Teruyama, Lydia Johnson, Cory Brown, Andrea Gill, Mike Ashley, Matthew Metz, Alex Zablocki and Matthew Kelleher. The exhibit is on display through March 29.

May’s exhibit is cleverly titled “Roses are Red…” and aims to celebrate flowers as they bloom throughout the month.

“Specifically, artists were asked to create a series of vases, flower bricks and other pots to contain

and display the grandeur of floral blooms,” the press release states.

Guests are encouraged to shop from the show for a Mother’s Day gift. Participating artists include Suze Lindsay, Julia Galloway, Kate Johnston, HP Bloomer and Lorna Meaden.

More than a gallery, the Red Lodge Clay Center welcomes the public to craft their own clay creations and watch artists work their magic.

The community kiln heats up Valentine’s Day with a special Wheel & Wine event. From 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 14, couples learn how to throw a piece of pottery while they sip on wine selections from Red Lodge’s own Backock & Miles. A similar date night is planned for Saturdays, March 24, April 21 and May 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. Event tickets are $45 each.

The clay center continues its holiday focus with Easter and Mother’s Day classes happening Saturdays, March 10 and April 28, respectively. Families are encouraged to come ready to make a table centerpiece or holiday gift. Kiddos younger than 5 are invited with an accompanying adult. The cost to register is $15.
