Annual Art in the Beartooths Carbon County Arts Guild signature summer event features fine art and exquisite dining

By Allyn Hulteng ahulteng@billingsgazette.com Art enthusiasts from all over the region will once again be gathering in Red Lodge on July 12, 2014 for the annual Art in the Beartooths benefit.

Now in its 41st year, the popular event is not only a patron favorite, but it raises awareness of and money for the Carbon County Arts Guild (CCAG).

“Our mission is to support and encourage all artists and art education for the benefit of the region,” said Deborah Kline-Sonderman, executive director.

Steeped in history In 1973, a group of local artists wanted to put on events and have a place to show art. At the time, the local depot – abandoned and in poor condition – had been for sale for many years.

Eventually, the Northern Pacific Railroad donated the depot to the Arts Guild to renovate and house the organization’s mission. “It’s still an historical site; we’re constantly improving and upgrading it to keep it in good condition,” said Kline-Sonderman.

Event Details

The 41st Annual Art in the Beartooths will take place at Lion’s Park (next to The Carbon County Arts Guild housed in the historic train station) in Red Lodge on Saturday July 12, 2014.

Attendance is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time, people can watch invited artists paint works, which will be auctioned during the evening affair, as they see the park being transformed for the signature event.

At 4 p.m. the park closes to the public. Evening event ticket holders will mingle with the artists, enjoy a delightful dinner under the stars and bid on silent auction items located in the Guild. After dinner, the live auction will feature one-of-a-kind works by an array of talented artisans.

Evening event tickets cost $50 and include hors d’oeuvres, a sumptuous summer supper and entrance to the silent and live actions.

of local moms who wanted to engage their children in the arts. Classes for youngsters interested in music, art and performance found a home in the depot, and demand grew. Simultaneously, local artists finally had a venue for displaying their works and engaging with contemporaries using different mediums.

As the popularity of the Guild grew, so did the demand for additional services.

Silent and live auctions celebrate the works of the area’s talented artists and offer attendees the chance to go home with a truly unique piece of art.

Contemporary beneficiaries Today, the Guild has more than 200 active members who apply to show their work in the main gallery. In addition, the Guild fosters a lively arts education program where artists travel to rural schools to teach during the school year.

One of the most important endeavors of the Guild is to raise scholarship money for high school students who want to pursue post-secondary studies in the arts.

“They may want to study art, music, dance or even graphic arts. We just want to help facilitate that experience,” said Kline-Sonderman.

Having expanded to serve a broad geographic region including Red Lodge, Fishtail, Nye, Fromberg, Roberts and Absarokee, the Guild has become a beacon of artistic opportunity, reaching even more young people than ever before.

“In 2013 we raised $3,900 just for scholarships at the annual Art in the Beartooths event. This year we hope to double that,” said Kline-Sonderman.

Masters and mentors This year’s Art in the Beartooths event promises to bring an elite slate of artists, including signature artist Kevin Red Star. Now celebrating 50 years in the art realm, Red Star brings his unique artistry and story-telling to the event. In addition to Red Star, the event will feature Susan Spero and David McMasters.

Previous signature artists will also be in attendance, including Carol Hagen, John Potter, Elliot Eaton, Harry Koyama and Ben Steele.

“Having Kevin Red Star as our signature artist coincides with the release of a new book by Dan Gibson on his life and works,” said Kline-Sonderman.

The beautiful, full–color coffee table book by Dan Gibson, Kline-Sonderman notes, will be available for purchase at the July event.

Wild West Weekend Home of Champions Rodeo celebrates 85 years

By Brittany Cremer bcremer@billingsgazette.com A hallmarked summertime event, the Home of Champions Rodeo will have you at the edge of your seat July 2-4, chomping at the bit for the next jack-hammer ride.

Coupled with the Home of Champions Parade, the rodeo features cowboys and cowgirls from all around the region. In its 85th year, the weekend-long event will see many of the same faces that grace the arena at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

“It’s more than just a rodeo, it’s a tradition,” said Beth Boggio, director of the event.

“We are a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo and are able to recruit real talent.”

Some of the same cowboys getting checks at our rodeo will be getting checks at the Finals, Boggio said. And each year, the caliber of cowboys and cowgirls who participate continues to get even better.

A grand history Rich in history and heritage, the rodeo dates back to the late 1890s when local cowboys got together on a Sunday afternoon at the railroad stockyards to ride exhibition broncos. In 1929, a group of local cowboys built an arena, gathered up some wild horses, charged admission and contested the rides. In 1930, with the success of the rodeo the year before, the Red Lodge Rodeo Association was formed.

In 1932, the Association acquired 180 acres of land and constructed a new arena and grandstand, which is still used today. In 1954, after local cowboy Bill Linderman won his third World All-Around Champion title, the name “Home of Champions” was adopted.

“We take a lot of pride in the event,” Boggio said. “We put on one of the best professional sporting events and do it in the small town of Red Lodge.”

Main events This year promises to be another outstanding year, with cowboys competing in bareback riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, steer riding, wild horse racing, ladies barrel racing and mutton busting for the kids.

“We do not take it for granted that our beautiful location in the Beartooth Mountains makes for a spectacular setting,” Boggio said.

Whether it’s your 85th rodeo or your first time, you’ll be sure to enjoy the sights and sounds of this great rodeo tradition. The three-day event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. on July 2 and 3 to 6 p.m. on July 3 and 4 at the Red Lodge Fairgrounds.

Room with a View Opening of Beartooth All-American Road signals summer season Courtesy of the Red Lodge Chamber If a man named J.C.F. “Doc” Siegfriedt had listened to what anybody was telling him in the 1920s –anybody at all—the Beartooth Highway, that unforgettable 68-mile stretch of winding, cliff-hugging, cloud-skimming road from Red Lodge, Mont. to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park, simply would not exist. But by all accounts, Doc was a force of nature, and from the time he arrived in Montana, he had his heart set on building a road that would connect the Red Lodge area with the wonderland of Yellowstone.

On June 14, 1936, after 17 years of planning and hard work, Doc led a honking caravan of cars from Red Lodge up the Beartooth Highway to formally declare the road open for travel. This summer, the public is invited to once again enjoy the splendor of the scenic route.

Yellowstone’s highway to the sky Dubbed “the most beautiful roadway in America” by On the Road correspondent Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level. Since its completion in 1936, the Highway has awed millions of visitors with its astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states.

The Montana Department of Transportation anticipates opening the Beartooth Highway to Vista Point on Friday, May 23 to kick-start Memorial Day Weekend.

It’s a day trip that’s well worth the wait.

As it winds its way between the northeastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park and Red Lodge, Mont., the highway traverses an impressive range of ecosystems– from lush lodge pole pine forests to alpine tundra.

At the highway’s summit, travelers find themselves in a sky-high world of glacial cirques, clear alpine lakes and snow that lingers through the summer months. The extreme climate at this elevation deters the growth of trees and shrubs, and the plants that do grow here have adapted in remarkable ways.

Some convert sunlight to heat, and many conserve water the way desert plants do.

In late June and July, the fragile tundra blossoms in a lavish display of wildflowers– shooting stars, columbine and Indian paintbrush, to name a few.

With 20 peaks more than 12,000 feet in elevation (including Granite Peak, Montana’s highest at 12,799 feet), the Beartooth Mountains lie within the 943,377-acre AbsarokaBeartooth Wilderness.

BMW Bike Rendezvous: A “Roaring” Good Time

By Brenda Maas bmaas@billingsgazette.com Mark your calendars now for “The Best Little Rally in the West” August 14-17 at the Lions Club Youth Camp, 10 miles south of Red Lodge. The 16th annual Beartooth Rendezvous BMW Motorcycle Rally is biking at its finest in “the last best place.”

Hosted by the Beartooth Beemers Bike Club, families and children are welcome to attend this annual gala. Facilities located

on-site include hot water, showers, sinks and electricity. Camping and bunks will be available to those who pre-register, but RV or four-wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

(RV facilities are available in the Red Lodge area, however, if you’d like to commute to the site.)

Dinners will be provided with your registration fee, and lunch and breakfast meals will be available for purchase on-site (these meal tickets are fundraisers for the Lions Club Camp). Registration is $75 per per-

son before July 20 and $90 per person after that date. Extra fees will be assessed for bunk and cabin rentals. Children 12 and older must register as adults and registration for children under 12 is free; they may purchase meal tickets.

There are absolutely no pets or fireworks allowed on site, and fire season regulations restrict smoking. National Forest Service Regulations prohibit camping between the marker ribbons and the stream, so be sure to select an appropriate site. In addition,

Beartooth Blitz The Beartooth Blitz is not for the faint of heart.

The grueling 23-mile individual time trial leads participants to the summit of the Beartooth Pass. This run was recently named one of the top five bike climbs in the nation.

Held Saturday, June 28, the day's activities start at Rock Creek Resort, located 6 miles south of Red Lodge. Racers will leave in 30-second intervals. This category-1 climb rises up more than 4,700 feet during its span of 23 miles. So you better enjoy the 66 feet of descending grade that you get at the starting line. The race ends at the scenic West Summit of the Beartooth Pass.

The Beartooth Run is Montana's signature running event, and this year, it has a new 10K course at 10,000-ft elevation on the top of the scenic Beartooth Pass.

The new "10 at 10" course showcases awesome views from the top of Line Creek Plateau, including the prominent Bear's Tooth, the area’s namesake. Along with its amazing vistas, this course is all above 10,000 feet, making it one of the highest road races in the United States.

Runners can choose between a 5K and 10K distance.

Red Lodge Founder’s Day The weekend of June 7-8 will be one of the hottest in Red Lodge this summer. Founder’s Day offers enough activities over a single weekend to keep even the busiest of gogetter families occupied. Enjoy!

Red Lodge Music Festival As one of the oldest and most successful music festivals in Montana, the Red Lodge Music Festival will be celebrating its 51st Anniversary this year. Held June 7-14, the event attracts more than 200 students annually from Montana and other states, with talented faculty from universities, colleges and symphony orchestras from across the nation.

What began in 1964 as a week-long camp has expanded to a full-blown, nine-day music festival. Five evening faculty concerts, two evening student recitals and afternoon band and orchestra performances complete a worthwhile and memorable Festival experience for student, faculty and audience. Historical Downtown Walks and Special Presentation Soak up stories of local history and lore by attending one of the Founder’s Day Historical Downtown Walks held June 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The walks begin at the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum located at 224 N. Broadway.

A little “JuJu” helps. At least that is what Stanley “Stano” Bustos believed. And lived. An incredibly active, giving individual, Stano passed away only in 2007 when he was just 56 years old. While the climb is challenging, non-climbers are encouraged to attend, supporting the climbers and the cause. In addition, memorial flags honoring both survi-

vors and those who fought bravely can be purchased and will line a portion of the trail.

Cancer survivors and caretakers will enjoy a free breakfast prior to the climb, starting at 8:30 a.m. The climb starts at 9:30 a.m. Entry fees include lunch and a “Climb to Conquer Cancer” T-shirt.

With 45 ambassador animals, who represent the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Sanctuary is literally a world to be explored. Festival of Nations: Melting Pot, Red Lodge Style

Where can men wear kilts and carry immense logs? Why, the Red Lodge Festival of Nations, of course! Celebrating Red Lodge’s cultural diversity for 64 years, the annual Festival of Nations is a traditional summer highlight.

Back in the day, Red Lodge was a thriving mountain mining town with nearly 15,000 residents, most who arrived from abroad to work the local mines. The area was divided into various districts by ethnic groups. Now Red Lodge residents and visitors alike celebrate their roots with a two-day festival that includes ethnic food, cultural dance, music and Highland games.

This year, the party kicks off at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, at the Elks Club with music and dancing, plus the Calcutta-style auction for the Highland Games. Bid on the winning athlete Friday night, and you will take home a portion of the prize money after the games on Saturday. But it’s all in good spirits—all proceeds from the auction benefit the scholarship fund for local students pursuing a career in the fields of arts, music and volunteerism.

Saturday’s events begin at noon with a parade in downtown Red Lodge. Activities begin at 12:30 p.m. at Red Lodge Ales and include a variety of ethnic dancing, music and of course the much-anticipated Highland Games.

Memorial Day Weekend Food and beverages of every culture will make this a taste-testing delight. Wear your ancestral kilt, lederhosen, Fri-Mon May 23-26 dirndl or the flag colors of your homeland. But be sure to come hungry, thirsty and ready for a rolling Open 9am-9pm each day good time—Red Lodge style!
