Northern Hotel The Grande Dame of downtown Billings makes her debut

History will happen on March 16 in Downtown Billings.

That is the day that the Northern Hotel, a historic landmark on the corner of Broadway and First Ave. North, will re-open after undergoing more than three years of renovations. An icon in Billings’ history, the new Northern Hotel promises to surpass guest expectations while honoring its rich heritage.

“We are putting the hotel back together according to the floor plans from when it reopened in 1942,” said Mary Ann Keenan, director of sales and marketing. “It will be a walk down memory lane for many people.”

That historical design begins with four individual front desk stations in the expansive lobby, each of which will be fully staffed at all times.

“We’ll offer magical fourto-five-star services,” noted Keenan. “We will provide things for our guests even before they know they need them.”

A stately enterprise

From the main entrance off Broadway and First Ave. North, visitors will enter via an air-lock entry (a concession to Montana’s varied climate) into an elegant and expansive lobby. Tiled with limestone and highlighted with dark wood-paneled columns, the foyer sets the tone for a luxurious experience. Along one side, a massive fireplace serves as a stunning focal point. Twelve feet wide with a flickering gas ribbon flame, the hearth is clad in limestone reclaimed from the former Montana-Dakota Utilities building.

Keenan noted that the rich feeling is very intentional and that each item was carefully designed and planned with the guests’ comfort in mind.

That feeling continues with sculptural wood accents that evoke the image of crosscut railroad ties – a nod to the Northern’s rich history.

graved with The Northern’s logo is backlit for a subtle yet striking impression. Art niches thoughtfully placed throughout the lobby will highlight commissioned art as well as displays from three local museums—the Yellowstone Art Museum, Western Heritage Center and Yellowstone County Museum—just as P.B. Moss did when the hotel first opened in 1942. Custommade furniture, including round red leather banquets, create an inspired yet welcoming ambiance.

The Northern will feature two new restaurants: Bernie’s is named after the mother of coowners Chris and Mike Nelson and will feature comfort food in an upbeat diner atmosphere. A soda fountain and specialty coffees complete the warm Montana welcome. TEN, named after their father, Thomas Edward Nelson, continues the Northern tradition as the perfect downtown gathering place. The softly-lit spacious red lounge will bring back memories of the days of old.

Exquisite dining

Billings-area residents can take advantage of the Northern’s two new restaurants— both named after the parents of co-owners, Mike and Chris Nelson.

TEN, named after their father, Thomas Edward Nelson, offers guests a more formal dining experience. Hotel guests can enter TEN via the lounge while the exterior entrance from First Ave. North is completed with glass block. The opulent feel continues here with faux-painted walls layered in red and raspberry tones. Dark wood, leather and tile with metal accents make for a uniquely western chic atmosphere.

Diners will see shadows of the kitchen workers via more translucent glass while a seethrough wine wall separates the Tapas Room. TEN and the lounge can seat up to 190 guests while an additional private dining room can be reserved for up to 30.

Keenan noted that the lounge will feature a wide variety of beers on tap—including Guiness—through a cooling system that guarantees a serving temperature of 32 degrees.

Mike and Chris’ mother inspired Bernie’s Diners—a more casual atmosphere with cuttingedge comfort food. Keenan hinted that diners may even see the Monte Cristo from the original Northern on the menu.

She called Bernie’s style “a diner with a 50s-60s vibe but very nouveau.”

In addition to being a breakfast and lunch place for hotel guest and downtown pa-

trons alike, Bernie’s will feature a soda fountain, coffee bar and soft leather couch seating—the perfect place to relax and read anything from the comics to The Billings Gazette, she said.

Ballrooms and business meetings

The Northern will offer 160 finely-appointed and amazingly quiet guest rooms. In addition, the hotel has a ballroom, and two executive board rooms— the Enterprise Suite and the P.B. Moss Room—which provide everything necessary for a modern-day business meeting.

The Grand Ballroom, which can be sub-divided into smaller convention rooms, is already a popular option in downtown Billings, noted Keenan. There are a number of galas booked, including events for the 2013 and 2014 holiday season.

“The ballroom has been made larger, streamlined and we incorporated theatrical lighting—it’s a sight to behold,” Keenan said. “We know the Billings community is excited and we are so excited to bring this venue back to our town.”

Lisa Harmon, Executive Director of the Downtown Billings Association and Downtown Billings Business Improvement District, noted that re-opening the Northern is a shot in the arm for a section of downtown that has been dark and quiet for too long.

“We as a community couldn’t be more proud to have our beloved Northern back, and she’s beautiful,” said Harmon.

“To have it owned and cared for by locals Chris and Mike Nelson, honoring their parents, is a real source of pride for our community. We feel like things are exactly the way they are supposed to be now that the Northern Hotel is back.”

Keenan agrees.

“Finishing the Northern Hotel and bringing it back makes downtown Billings complete. For so many years the Northern was THE place to be, to have an event,” she said. “We are so pleased to bring that tradition back to Billings.”

Distilling Montana’s essence into memorable beverages

After endless hours of jumping through hoops to comply with state and federal regulations and working through numerous delays that cropped up at nearly every turn, Casey McGowan finally got down to business in early January.

Trailhead Spirits, McGowan’s labor of love since early in 2011, has introduced its first product, Great North Vodka. The first 500-bottle run was distilled, bottled, labeled and ready for distribution. The tasting room is now open in the former Beanery building at 2314 Montana Ave., part of the historic Billings Depot.

Around St. Patrick’s Day, McGowan will introduce Healy’s Gin, named after his great grandfather, Mike Healy, who owned the Radio Bar in Butte and was a well-known bootlegger and still operator during Prohibition.

In a couple of years, look for aged whiskey and other distilled spirits from Trailhead, as McGowan tests the market and develops his skills as a distiller.

“It’s been an amazing adventure, but the fun part is just starting,” said McGowan, who described the custom-made distillery as a giant chemistry lab.

“What we’d like to do is continually have a new release, very limited, maybe 1,000 bottles,” he said. “We’d like to explore different flavor profiles and educate people on why it tastes the way it does.”

As consumer tastes evolve and markets become increasingly fragmented, many people are on the lookout for unique products.

Not only does a locally produced liquor need

to deliver on taste, it helps if there’s a story behind it.

And McGowan believes Trailhead Spirits has a pretty compelling story. Wheat grown on the family farm near Great Falls is the main feedstock for Great North Vodka. He also plans to use as many other Montana-made ingredients as possible, both in his distilled beverages and in the cocktails mixed in the distillery’s tasting room.

That means locally grown beet sugar and chocolate from Kings Cupboard in Red Lodge will be used in fancy cocktails. Martinis will be garnished with olives from the Yellowstone Olive Co., an upstart retailer that specializes in olives and related products. McGowan also hopes to incorporate other well-known Montana products such as Flathead cherries and huckleberries into his product line.

“That’s kind of the premise behind the business plan,” McGowan said. “We try to use as many local vendors as we can.”

McGowan had originally planned to name the distillery Big Sky Spirits, but his application was rejected by the Montana Secretary of State’s office because the name had already been taken by a Texas-based cheerleading camp that has operations in Montana.

A few months went by as McGowan pondered different names. One day out of the blue he got a call from his wife, Steffanie.

“I’ve got the name,” she said. “Trailhead Spirits.”

The distillery’s name ties in with a homegrown branding initiative that promotes Billings as Montana’s trailhead. The Billings Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Bureau has been quite supportive of the name, and McGowan hopes to develop crosspromotional events.

Distilling remains one of the most tightly regulated industries in the nation, and complying with the myriad state and federal regulations has required patience and diligence, McGowan said.

Under state law, distilleries like Trailhead Spirits have limited hours and may serve only 2 ounces per customer per day, although customers can also buy packaged products to take out. Because of that, McGowan expects that 80 percent of his production will be consumed away from the premises, either purchased in liquor stores or consumed in other drinking establishments.

Trailhead’s products intended for wholesale must be distributed through the state liquor warehouse. Under state law, if the bartender at The Rex just across the street runs out of McGowan’s product, he can’t pop over and pick up a case. He has to order

it through the state warehouse, which means shipping it to Helena and back to Billings.

Despite the tight regulations, micro distilleries are popping up all over the map. About a half dozen small distilleries are operating throughout the Big Sky state. The owners have formed an informal distiller’s guild and may eventually look for opportunities to benefit the industry. One potential change to state law would be to allow distilleries to distribute their products locally, while still paying their taxes but avoiding the additional expense of shipping through the state warehouse, McGowan said.

The distilling process hasn’t changed a lot since it was invented sometime during the Middle Ages.

But McGowan’s great grandfather would likely be impressed with the sophisticated technology utilized at Trailhead.

The computerized equipment relies on pumps and automatic control valves. A beer-like mash of fermented grain, yeast and water is placed into a copper kettle where it’s heated. Ethanol, the compound that gives distilled spirits their kick, boils at 173 degrees, compared to water’s boiling point of 212 degrees. The alcohol vapor is captured in a series of vertical condensers.

The clear distillate is sent through again, filtered and bottled.

McGowan has no grand scheme to compete with Jack Daniels and other national brands.

He and other micro distillers will continue to focus on discerning customers who value something different.

“Even if we have our 1 percent, we’ll be happy,” he said.

The turnstile at Billings Y flips more than a thousand times a day.

Moms on the go, downtown professionals squeezing in a lunchtime workout, retirees seeking out swimming lessons, youth sports attendees and yoga enthusiasts are among the hundreds of community members using the Y as exercise central.

And although the Y features a vast array of exercise classes, recreational leagues and youth sports programs, it’s so much more than just an exercise center.

“We aren’t just a health club,” said Tina Postel, Billings Y CEO. “We are a nonprofit center serving our community.”

The Y participates in a wide range of community outreach projects, partnering with Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, School District 2, Eagle Mount and area hospitals to just name a few.

They even offer free classes to individuals who are simply interested in how to use sports equipment or who want to start.

“The community has served us well and we are here to serve the community,” Postel said.

Improve and innovate

The truth is, from aquatics and aerobics to Pilates and Pickleball, there is something for everyone at the Billings Y. Whether you’ve been a member at the Y for years or are currently considering a membership, chances are that they have programs in the works that might surprise you.

One of their newer developments is a Tutoring and Technology Center, which is outfitted with 14 computers for kids to use.

“Our mantra is healthy mind, body and spirit,” Postel said. “There’s often an emphasis placed on the physical aspect of fitness, but we believe in cultivating all aspects of self.”

And creating a family-friendly environment where busy parents can bring their kids to play or workout is all part of this mission.

The Y provides childcare and preschool for members and has recently designed a special workout room catering to tiny muscles.

The Y’s Kids’ Fitness Center is outfitted with kid-sized ellipticals, treadmills and bikes.

“Adult-sized exercise equipment is often ill-fitting for kids 6-12,” Postel said. “Injuries can occur if oversized equipment is used improperly.”

The Y’s extensive class schedule and wide range of workout times is another amenity for would-be members.

When Postel took over the helm at the Y nearly three years ago, she made a commitment to herself to attend each of the Y’s 120 classes from a variety of instructors within a span of six months.

“We have so many fantastic instructors,” she said. “They are all passionate about their areas of emphasis.”

Even more impressive is that these instructors are skilled in serving a wide range of ages and ability levels.

In any given class, the instructors could have participants ranging in age from 10 to 101. They have to be ready to offer tips and suggestions for move variations and adjustments, Postel added.

And of the many classes offered at the Y, what is Postel’s favorite?

“I really like the Boot Camp because of the variety, and recently–with the gentle nudge of some friends–I’ve taken a liking to running,” she said.

Several downtown business professionals take advantage of this and are able to squeeze in noon hoops or a quick lunchtime workout, then jet back to the office.

But for those in Billings Heights or Lockwood, there are options for you, too.

The Y recently expanded their suite of workout classes to these areas to increase convenience and accessibility.

Another little-known service provided by Billings Y is their “Y on Wheels” program, where they actually bring the workout to you.

“You provide the space and participants, and we provide the workout and instructor,” Postel said.

With such a variety of programs and services, it comes as no surprise that the Y looks markedly different during any given hour of the day.

Early birds (mostly working business professionals) come in at 5 or 6 a.m. for a quick workout, Postel said, then, by 9 a.m., the Y is mostly filled with preschoolers and moms.

Noontime brings around Billings’ downtown working professionals for a quick workout, and then as the afternoon wans on, the Y greets 200 to 300 children attending after school care, Postel said.

By 5 p.m., the Y sees the afterwork crowd and families participating in its youth sports programs. Later at night, the Y sees those who prefer a more secluded, quiet workout before calling it a night.

“And every day is different,” Postel said.

Spare Change for Real Change

For those of you looking to dust of your sneakers for a good cause, consider entering the Purple 5K—a race specially designed to raise money for downtown Billings. Held Saturday, March 30 at noon, the race is designed to bring participants on a tour of downtown, from Montana State University Billings’ campus through the hospital corridor, ending near Anytime Fitness.

Operafest

Offering upscale silent and live auctions, fine dining and a delightful evening of live opera entertainment, Operafest will take place Saturday, April 6 at the Yellowstone Country Club, 5707 Bobby Jones Blvd.

Rich in history and beauty, Billings’ Moss Mansion will be playing host to suite of springtime events. To kick off the season, be one of the first to attend a special summer exhibition May 1.

Two weeks later, the Moss will partner with the Historical Society to produce the much-anticipated Heritage Home tour, featuring a day of historically-inspired architecture and design. The Tour will be held May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and typically takes place along historic Clark and Yellowstone Avenues. But this year, Moss Mansion Executive Director Jenna Richter said the tour will feature more variety.

“We’ll likely branch out and feature various historical residences across Billings,” Richter said. “It’s a great opportunity for community members to stroll up and down the streets of Billings to view some amazing, historical homes,” she said.

Funds raised during the tour will go directly toward funding the overall operation and preservation of the historical Moss Mansion, Richter said.

Art enthusiasts and crafters unite at the Moss Mansion’s annual SpringFest, held June 1 on the front lawn of the Moss Mansion. This annual event, formerly known as the Country Fair, features arts and crafts vendors, food concessions and live entertainment. A kid’s corner with carnival-style games and kids’ crafts will entertain the young for a nominal fee. Guided tours of the historic house museum and access to the Mansion’s gift shop are available that day.

Courtesy of the Western Heritage Center One night in September of 1940, the worst fire in Billings’ history broke out in the basement of the Northern Hotel and completely destroyed the structure. According to accounts from The Billings Gazette of that time, “the glow of the fire could be seen 50 miles away.�

Today, brothers Chris and Mike Nelson have taken the structure under their wing, renovating it with a clear vision to make the Northern a modern hotel while preserving its unique history and grace. When the renovation is complete, the brothers will have successfully restored the charming hotel to its former glory.
