A family affair Three generations of Hedins comprise Rimrock Promotions, the family-owned and operated business that has put on this larger-than-life expo in Billings for the last 33 years. Extravagant doesn’t seem to cover the largest home improvement show of its kind within the region. With over 100,000 square feet of inside exhibits and 35,000 square feet of exhibits outdoors, you might want to devote two or three days to a show of this caliber. “We’re pretty blessed,” admits Devon Hedin of the show’s success. Devon and his brother Beau are following in their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, guided by the original mission to support local businesses. “Ninety percent of our vendors are from Billings and Laurel,” says Devon. “We max at 650 exhibits and have a waiting list each year. Spots are sold by Thanksgiving and the high demand and variety allows us to be selective.”

Hammer Continued from 2 Vendors range in expertise from builders to repairmen, flooring to roofing specialists and everything in-between. The Hedins ensure a wide variety each season. Bank and insurance representatives are even on-site to get you approved for that mortgage or large-scale project you’ve always dreamed of. “The show also serves as a testing ground for new products and services,” added Beau.

So what’s new? Perhaps you want tile that looks like barn wood or landscaping with water features. Exhibitors put time and effort into their booths to demonstrate innovative products first-hand. This year’s show features six modular homes, the most ever displayed. They are custom-built three weeks in advance with diverse options to suit all needs. “Build a report and ask specific questions. Touch and feel the products. The face-to-face interaction that this show affords gives you a feeling whether or not you want to do business with the exhibitors,” noted Beau.

Companies are looking to fit the needs of all types of homeowners. A tech-savvy household might appreciate new Wi-Fi compatible BBQ smokers or the latest man-cave technology, while those interested in stay-cations might fancy an adjustable spa tub. Consider the home show as a real-life Pinterest to make your dreams a reality. No dream is too lofty. Have you ever wanted to ride a Segway or have a synthetic grass putting green in your backyard? How about a high-definition home theater room? Mind-bending booths are bountiful at the home show. Immerse yourself in products and services you’ve always imagined for your private oasis.

Let’s all go! The Hedins understand the importance of family. “We like to make it a family day,” said Devon. “And focus on the show experience,” Beau added. Families bearing strollers and small kiddos can utilize the free shuttle to get to the wondrous workshops available to kids. Bricks & Minifigs, your local authority on LEGOs, boasts a racetrack with LEGO cars for the smash and crash ‘em boy in your brood.

For the more creative type, there are craft-building workshops provided by Lowe’s and Home Depot where children can take home their creation at the end. A little bird told us kids have the chance to build bird houses this year. Can’t get enough of the fun? Zee Creative is holding a scavenger hunt—winner gets a free iPad mini!

Eat, drink and be merry Keep your energy up with the array of specialty foods. Food trucks sporting seafood, smoked meats and Greek and American delicacies as diverse as the show itself will keep you fueled up for the main festivities. Live cooking demonstrations entertain and encourage homeowners to liven up their palate. The possibilities are endless when considering what new appliance or countertop you could be working with when the time comes to recreate the recipe. Maintain your merriment by entering to win one of the fabulous grand prizes offered this year. With a record 15 prizes worth more than $30,000 in total, you can choose what type of prize suits your fancy with the cut-out registration ticket or register on-site. You do not need to be present at the drawing to win.

Freshen up your home for the spring season Metro Services After a few months of chilly temperatures, come spring, many homeowners are eager to throw open their windows and doors and breathe new life into their homes. Simple changes made now - even before the weather begins to warm up - can improve interior spaces and brighten the atmosphere of a home.  Go plant shopping. Research from NASA suggests adding at least one plant in your home per 100 square feet is efficient enough to clean air. Fresh foliage also makes a home feel warm and inviting. Watering and misting plants introduces moisture into indoor air, which can make rooms overcome with dry air from heating systems feel comfortable. Just be sure to avoid overwatering plants, which can lead to mold growth.

Doctors Agree InfrAreD Works The Journal of Internal Medicine’s recent study showed 68% of chronic pain test subjects had a significantreductioninpain.“Arthritic joint stiffness was reduced drastically after infrared treatments.” said Dr. Justin Tobias of the Creighton School of Medicine. Dr. Wayne Good has treated over 600 patients for carpal tunnel syndrome, with a 70% success rate after using infrared therapy. These studies validate what the Carleton family, owners of Sunshine Infrared Saunas, has known for the past nine years. After two failed knee surgeries left wife Claire with no hope in sight, daily use of their Sunshine Infrared Sauna is what warded off a knee replacement. Her husband Clint’s blood pressure lowered, his asthma disappeared,

and even the pain from a broken neck was alleviated! His mother Sheila’s chronic pain, high blood pressure, and arthritis have all been helped with the use of a Sunshine Infrared Sauna. After use of the Sunshine Infrared Sauna by other family members led to more incredible health benefits, the Carleton’s began a business of their own, demonstrating and selling the saunas. Over the last nine years, more than 400 customers throughout Montana and Wyoming have shared many life changing stories, thanks to the Carleton’s Infrared Sauna. To get started on the road to improving your health, stop by Sunshine Infrared Saunas booth at the Billings Spring Home Improvement Show or call 1-406-679-1978 for info.

Shocking newS About Digging Did you know calling 811 may not be enough? You need to call 811 to mark public utilities but there may be private lines in your work area. Private utilities not marked may include: • Power to a garage • Sprinkler valves • Wells • Pivots • Livestock water heaters • Gas to a shop, hot tub, or BBQ grill • Parking lot lighting • Lampposts

We Are Private Utility Locating Experts! Protect yourself from liability! Avoid personal injury and costly utility damages!

5 Common Questions 1 - Who should I call before I dig to avoid damaging underground power or other lines? • You should always call 811 before you dig to have public utility lines located. Additionally, if you suspect (or are at all unsure) that there may be private lines you should also call last call Locating, Inc. before you dig. 2 - Is calling 811 before digging enough? • In many cases the answer is NO.The 811 ‘One Call’ system locates public utilities ONLY. It does not cover any private lines which may exist on the property and can be just as costly and dangerous to hit as the public lines. If you are at all unsure you should always call us as well to locate private lines before you dig. 3 - Why are you different than calling 811? • 811, also known as the ‘One Call’ system does not actually locate lines. They are simply a referral service that contacts the local public utility companies who, in turn, come out and locate their lines. They are only responsible for locating and marking the portion of the lines that they own and do not locate any privately owned lines. Although you should certainly call them first, you should also call us to locate any private utility lines on the property. 4 - What types of lines do you locate? • We locate many private underground lines including electrical, high voltage, gas, water, steam, communication, sprinkler valves, pipes and conduits... 5 - Am I required locate buried utility lines? • Yes. M.C.A. §69-4-502 requires anyone digging to have utility lines located before excavating. If you fail to have lines located and damage any lines you are liable to the owner for the entire cost of repair and may be liable for additional damages as well! Play it safe, always call before you dig.

Home Continued from 4  Swap out throw pillows. Accent pillows on beds and sofas are quick and inexpensive ways to add new bursts of color to rooms. You may be able to make over a room’s entire color scheme with new pillows. Invest in pillows that you can switch with each season so your decor will never look tired or dull.  Clean existing light fixtures. Another way to brighten the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make sure they are working effectively. Spend time dusting them and cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, switch out old lamp shades for newer ones that let more light shine through. If inadequate lighting is a problem no matter how many lamps you have, consult with an electrician about installing more overhead and accent lighting.  Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blowing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a

year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deepcleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.  Color-coordinate bookshelves. Group all books with similarly colored covers together for an instant and eyeappealing look.  Simmer some homemade home deodorizer. In a large pot, boil water and some scented herbs, such as rosemary, citrus rinds, vanilla, or lavender. The aroma will waft through the home, creating a pleasing scent.  Invest in new window treatments. Lightweight draperies or new blinds or shades can transform the look of a room. Be sure to keep curtains and blinds open during the day to maximize the hours of sunlight. Homeowners can make some simple changes while they’re stuck indoors and reap the benefits when the weather warms up again.

DID YOU KNOW?

In its 2015 “Cost vs. Value Report,” Remodeling magazine found that a midrange kitchen remodeling project, which cost an average of nearly $57,000 during the period examined, recouped roughly 68 percent of that cost at resale. That return was slightly less than that provided by midrange bathroom remodeling projects, which provided a 70 percent return at resale. More upscale remodeling projects provided even smaller returns, despite costing substantially more money. For example, the cost of major upscale kitchen remodeling projects averaged $113,000 during the time studied for the report. But only 59 percent of that sizable investment provided was recouped at resale. Upscale bathroom remodeling projects also underperformed compared to midrange projects, recouping slightly less than 60 percent at resale. No upscale project referenced in the report provided a greater return than replacing existing siding with new fiber-cement siding, a project that recouped homeowners a greater than 84 percent return at resale. More information about the 2015 report is available at www.remodeling.hw.net.

ome renovation projects vary in scope. Something as simple as repainting a bedroom counts as a renovation project, as does a full kitchen remodel. But no matter how big or small a project, homeowners’ top priority should always be safety. Before beginning a project, make a list of possible hazards and how to avoid them. Here are some potential dangers that can spring up.

Electrical Lines All homes may not have been built in adherence to modern-day codes. Electric lines can be discovered where they are least expected. When doing demolition or drilling/nailing into walls, it’s not uncommon to come across electrical wires. Extra caution needs to be taken, and an electrician should be consulted if the wires need to be relocated.

Tools Cuts, abrasions, burns and more can result when power tools and even manual tools are used incorrectly. Learn how to use tools before beginning a project, and always put tools away when work is done for the day.

Falls

Dust and Dirt Sanding, sawing, welding, and other home renovation tasks can cast debris into the air. Ventilation may be needed to maintain clean, breathable air. Ventilation can also shuttle any harmful fumes generated from construction materials outside of the home. Do-it-yourselfers should wear masks and eye protection to guard themselves against debris.

Chemicals Chemicals, such as sealants, cleaners, lubricants, and fuel, may be used during renovation projects. Such substances can be dangerous to pets and children if they are touched or accidentally ingested. Exercise extreme caution when using chemical products, making sure all product containers are sealed and kept out of reach when not in use.

Falls are a leading cause of household injury, and the chance of a fall may increase when climbing ladders during home improvement projects. Don’t climb beyond where indicated on ladders and always have a spotter on hand when climbing is necessary. Wear harnesses, sturdy footwear and gloves as well.

Asbestos Many homes built when asbestos was legal still contain asbestos materials. Asbestos has been used in many applications, such as in ceiling materials, insulation, siding, and more. That’s because asbestos is flame retardant and serves as an effective and inexpensive insulator. However, asbestos fibers released into the air during renovations can cause respiratory problems and even lead to lung cancer. Asbestos needs to be removed under specific guidelines and disposed of properly. Disposal typically requires hiring a professional service.

5 things to consider before expanding your home Metro Services Homeowners who feel their homes are a little confined may be interested in expanding their homes to make them more comfortable and serviceable. Several questions may come to mind when homeowners are considering adding on to an existing home. Expanding a home requires careful consideration. While the end results can be spectacular, expansion is typically a long and costly process that will impede on the lifestyles of a home’s inhabitants during the renovation process. Expect loud noises, work crews and sawdust throughout the project. Depending on which areas are being renovated, residents may feel their lives are in upheaval until the expansion project has been completed. Familiarizing yourself with the expansion process and recognizing potential snags along the way can make planning and coping that much easier.

1

Many homeowners first consult with a contractor when mulling over expansions. However, you may want to speak with an architect first. He or she may be able to suggest renovations that fit with your neighborhood and appeal to prospective buyers when you decide to sell your home in the future.

2

Visit your building inspection or municipal office to learn the local regulations. You want to ensure that any renovations you make are done in keeping with safety codes and laws. Please see Home, 15

3

While you’re thinking of your neighbors, give them the heads up on your potential plans. This way they will not be surprised by the extra noise and activity when the renovation begins.

4

Remodeling can cost anywhere from $200 to $600 per square foot added. You’ll need to figure out a way to pay for the renovations, and you may consider refinancing your home. Make sure it is a smart time financially to do so based on current real estate market conditions. Also know that additions will likely increase your home insurance coverage needs. Consult with the insurance company about estimated charges and any restrictions they have.

5

Consider a standalone structure when mulling over your options. Sometimes the cost of putting up a free-standing office or another structure on your property may end up being less expansive than expanding on what you already have. Think creatively and research all of your options before committing to a project.
