Everyone has a partner and is designated as an odd or even couple. Traditional mountain figures with a caller leading the dance is performed while also performing the rhythmic footwork that will be taught prior to the figures. The dance is performed in a counter clockwise direction. Similar to that of the southern Appalachian hoedown, only no footwork is required. Dancers can skip, walk, or dance however the music feels to them while performing the figures and partner progressions. Many of the small figures are performed in groups of 4 or 8 with partners facing each other in a square formation while the caller shouts the next movements.
