Dear Colleagues in Learning, Hope you had a great holiday season. We know you will enjoy the winter/spring 2018 catalog and will sign up for as many courses as you like. There should be something for everyone in this eclectic mix. In all, there are thirty-one courses this semester, the most we have ever had.

The $40 membership fee and the $45 registration fee for the winter/spring semester are due to be paid now. If you have already paid the membership fee, you are only to pay the $45 registration fee. Please check the registration form at the back of the catalog to see how you can pay by check or credit card. For limited occupancy classes, use our web site to register immediately. Registration by mail will take longer.

As you probably know, we are using a new electronic/e-mail class evaluation system. When you receive the e-mail after the last class you attended, please fill it out promptly. We value your feedback.

This past year saw a steady membership number. At the end of our 2016-2017 academic year, we had 267 members. We are, however, always looking for new members, so bring a friend to a class and encourage him or her to join LLHHI. Enjoy your classes, thanks for being such a loyal member, and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

Special Event Sunday Brunch and a Play We have a delightful treat for our members to kick off the winter/spring semester starting with a SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4, brunch at Frankie Bones.

This is followed by a matinee performance of Good People at the nearby Main Street Theater, a production of the Lean Ensemble Theater.

Brunch starts at 11:30 AM at Frankie Bones, 1301 Main Street. The play starts at 2:00 PM at the Main Street Theater, 3000 Main Street. The cost is $45 per person. This is in addition to your regular semester fees. This covers brunch and your ticket. Any alcoholic beverages are extra.

ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 40 PEOPLE, sign up early using the registration form on page 18 in this catalog or on line. More information is on the back of the registration page.

Mondays T Let's Make Mezza (Lebanese Hot and Cold Appetizers) This class will feature a demonstration of five classic Lebanese appetizers using ingredients readily available in your grocery store. There will be a tasting with recipe hand-outs for all.

There will be a $7 charge per person for the food and supplies, payable by check or cash at the class.

T The Past, Present, and Future of Petroleum How will the world continue to meet its energy needs in the age of economic expansion, armed conflicts, and environmental concerns? To better understand this spectrum of conditions, this class will look at the history of the petroleum industry, how its products get to market, and how advanced technology is impacting the industry with energy options and alternatives.

February 12: How History and Geopolitics Impact Today’s Energy Equation Learn how the need for energy has resulted in unexpected geopolitical outcomes. Explore alliances that bridged the gap between philosophical opposites and made for strange bedfellows.

February 19: U.S. Energy Independence as a Factor in Global Supply This session will review how four major energy developments changed the U.S. from severe dependence on foreign energy to a much more independent posture and how that independence affected global policy and strategic initiatives.

February 26: Energy Alternatives and Options Impacted by Advanced Technology Place yourself in the position of policy leaders, and review which energy alternatives and options might be the solution to continued global economic growth.

Carlton Dallas’s career spanned thirty-four years in the petroleum industry. He served as Managing Director/CEO of Chevron Texaco Eastern Caribbean. His last assignment was in Cape Town, South Africa, as Regional Director-Africa, Europe, and Pakistan. Carlton continues a private consultancy business and serves as Chair of the Academic World Quest program for the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head.

Mondays T Backpacking Adventures on the Appalachian Trail Jill Pellerin will take you along as she relives her backpacking experiences along a two thousand mile journey from Georgia to Maine. Her dazzling photographs will highlight the exhilarating beauty of the Appalachian Trail and make you feel the experience firsthand.

Jill Pellerin is an avid runner and triathlete, backpacker, and tennis player. She is the author of two books about the plight of endangered sea turtles.

T The Natural Wonders of Hilton Head Island The Coastal Discovery Museum is the “go to” destination to learn about Hilton Head’s history and natural environment. The experience of walking on the beaches of the Atlantic is sure to be enhanced by a more informed appreciation of the critters and collectables to be discovered there.

March 5: A Day at the Beach - Explore the beach without actually going there. Discover the wide variety of fascinating critters that live in those beautiful shells and the importance of the beach habitat.

March 12: Sea Turtles and Horseshoe Crabs - Six species of sea turtles can be found nesting on the island’s shores. Learn about them and about the fascinating horseshoe crab, sometimes called a living fossil, as they grace our shores during mating season in May and June.

March 19: Birding in the Lowcountry - Learn about the amazing diversity of birds living in and visiting the Lowcountry, beautifully illustrated in colorful slides. Learn basic birding skills for beginners and more details for experienced birders.

March 26: Butterflies and Dragonflies - Gain an understanding of the fascinating life cycles of butterflies and dragonflies and the host plants unique to their survival. Learn about adding plants to your garden to attract them.

Dawn Brut is Curator of Education at the Coastal Discovery Museum. She holds a degree in Biology and Art from Theil University. She came to Coastal Discovery in 2013, following eight years at the Don Lee Center in NC, as Environmental Education and School Program Coordinator.

Carlos Chacon is Manager of Natural History at the museum. He is a graduate in Tropical Biology from The University of Costa Rica and holds a Master of Science degree in Earth and Environmental Resources Management from the University of South Carolina. He has been at the Coastal Discovery since 2005.

Tuesdays T Investing For Seniors: Level II We will concentrate on preserving your capital while exploring ways to at least keep pace with the Dow Jones average. Included will be how to evaluate your mutual funds, stocks, and bonds. Are they appropriate for seniors and if not, how do you find investments that suit your needs. In addition, we will discuss stock options, commodities, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and short sales.

For those who use investment advisors, we will examine ways to determine if they have your interests in mind . . . all the time.

Bill Dix had a thirty-year career with Smith Barney on Wall Street, retiring in 1995 as a Senior VicePresident, Investments. He has taught for LLHHI for nine years.

T Sex and the Constitution The twentieth century saw the gradual emergence of bitter divisions over issues of sexual “morality” and sexual freedom. Fiercely determined organizations and individuals on both the right and the left wrestled in the domains of politics, religion, public opinion, and the courts to win over the soul of the nation.

One of LLHHI’s favorite presenters, Attorney Gerry Swimmer, will discuss how sex has interplayed with religion and the Constitution. His examples range from Griswold v. Connecticut (contraception), to Roe v. Wade (abortion), to Obergefell v. Hodges (gay marriage). He’ll even delve into cases dealing with pornography and witchcraft.

This six-session course will provide provocative, vivid historical context to the decisions that have come to define who we are as a nation.

Gerry Swimmer is a retired executive of Ingersoll Rand Corp.

College and States' Rights

This course will examine these questions: Why are elections in which the Electoral College vote overrides the popular vote always disruptive, and should this reality require a re-examination of the continuing Constitutional concept of States' Rights?

Wednesdays T Comprehensive Health Care in the Information Age Looking for a Consumers Report on health care delivery?

Finding one about diagnosis and treatment is a challenge, but finding consumer guides to health care insurance is easy.

Are we to assume that finding the best health insurance coverage is also the best way to find a diagnosis and treatment plan for what ails us? Probably not. Let's look at how we might better navigate the complexity of health care decisions in the information age.

Dr. Harold D. Cross is a graduate of Yale Medical School. He spent thirty years as a primary care physician and twenty years in emergency room practice. He is the co-author of The Problem Oriented Practice of Medicine and remains active in Bluffton's Volunteers in Medicine.

Wednesdays T Current Events Join our open forum where current events, local, national, and global, are discussed in an unstructured setting. Class members are advised of the topics, for the first session, and thereafter choose the subjects themselves.

Participants will be expected to do some reading in preparation for each session and to join in the group discussions. The object is to air all sides of an issue. As always, contrarian and controversial points of view are welcome!

Your moderators are Rick Anderson a retired psychiatrist who practiced in Baltimore until his retirement to Hilton Head in 1999. He is a liberal. Jim Van Cleave a thirty-seven year veteran of Procter & Gamble in marketing. He presents classic films for LLHHI and is a conservative.

T Music and The Dance Music moves us, literally. Rhythm and movement are deeply linked in history and in practice. Music's kinetic power is the foundation of human behaviors as diverse as dance, lullabies, sacred ritual, romance, and military marches.

The relationship of music and movement shares a dynamic structure that supports the universal biological expressions of human emotion. Examples of dance/music couplings include folk traditions, baroque and orchestral compositions, social dances such as the waltz, tango, salsa, and modern dances like disco and hip-hop.

We will be moved by what we see and hear together!

Michelle Audet is a professional arts educator and frequent host of dance and arts programs for LLHHI. She was the Founding Director of Education for New York City Ballet where George Balanchine, Lincoln Kirstein, and Jerome Robbins mentored her.

Wednesdays T Allendale Character Institute: When You Turn the Prison

Over to the Inmates

Prison inmates will, at some point, return to our community. In what condition will they return? Is there such a thing as rehabilitation, and if so what does it look like?

The story of the Allendale Character Institute will open your eyes to what a different philosophy and approach can do when programs are turned over to the inmates. Allendale is unique in its approach and unlike any prison in South Carolina.

Thomas Conner has fifty-two years of experience in education including Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. He developed the inmate training program at Allendale.

John Pate was Allendale Warden for over ten years and has over twenty years in corrections.

He has helped change the philosophy of the prison culture.

T From Impressionism to Pop Art: French and American Artists As artists transitioned from painting academic subjects like history, biblical scenes, and mythology to painting from modern life, words like “genre” and “impressionism” entered the language of patrons and critics of the arts. Impressionists like Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, and Pissarro, exhibiting at the Salon des Refuses in 1863, would be astounded to know how enduring their breakaway movement became and how it evolved.

March 7: The 1863 Salon des Refuses (Exhibition of Rejects) marked a turning point in academic art, including the endorsement of the movement by Napoleon III, himself.

March 14: The Rise of Master Impressionist Painters - We will explore the work of the “genre” movement of artists refused entrée to the 1863 exhibition as Impressionism took form among more and more French and American Painters.

March 21: The History of the Dash, the Dot, and the Square in Painting - This session will explore 19th through the 21st century master artists brush strokes made from dashes, dots, and squares to create realism on canvas, noting the work of Josef Albers, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Salvador Dali.

Candace Lovely is an American Impressionist painter and Copley Master, trained in the Boston School tradition. Candace maintains a studio on Hilton Head Island.

Wednesdays T Shifting Baselines: A Lowcounty Fishing Tale Shifting Baselines is a documentary film which profiles Georgia's commercial fishing industry through interviews with multi-generational commercial fishing families. We learn of their struggles as they try adapt to diminishing fish and shrimp populations, changing their methods to meet the demands of the seafood-loving public and to provide for their own families.

The documentary will be shown by Executive Producer Cathy J. Sakas, who will answer questions after the viewing.

Cathy Sakas is a professional interpretive naturalist and ocean science translator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is also the Founding Chair of Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

Thursdays T Affordable Workforce Housing: An Island in Crisis As the Hilton Head population grows, the need for affordable workforce housing is rapidly becoming a top priority. Individuals for entry-level and lower-skilled jobs are in short supply, as noted with recent restaurant closures and numerous help wanted notices. For decades, the town of Hilton Head has been grappling with options to address the problem. Obstacles include zoning rules on density and clustering, lack of resources, and transportation issues. And, of course, the ever-present “not in my backyard” argument.

John Patten was President of the Campbell Soup Food Service Global Business and partner and owner of CEO Partners, Inc., a consulting firm to the foodservice industry.

An area resident for more than forty years, Andy Twisdale was selected SC Realtor Advocate of the year in 2013. From 2010 to 2017, he served on the South Carolina Realtors Political Action Committee’s board of trustees.

Thursdays T Music Re-orchestration from Brahms to Liszt February 8: Brahms and his Quintet - We will look at the metamorphosis of his Opus 34 from his piano quintet into what it is most known as today; a piano, and string quartet. There will be listening and comparison of the different versions of the piece, often called "the crown of his chamber music."

February 15: Transcriptions and Transformations - We will highlight pieces from Bach, Wagner, Liszt, and Busoni that were transcribed for different instruments than those for which they were originally written. From orchestral to organ to solo strings, some of these pieces have seen massive changes.

Joshua Greer has an undergraduate degree in piano performance from Furman University. He was the music director for Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC. T Sculpture This is a first for LLHHI; an opportunity to explore the art of sculpture.

In these six-sessions, you will have an opportunity to practice various sculpting techniques, working principally in clay.

Students should bring a sketchbook, pencils, two plastic grocery bags, and an old hand towel to the first class. You will get your hands dirty, so you may want to leave your rings at home.

There will be a $40 materials charge for clay, work board, and tools, payable by cash or check at the first session.

Don’t be intimidated. No experience required!

Shanon Thomas Jordan is an art major with six years of private sculpture instruction from master Chinese sculptor, Rong Hou. Her work has been shown in galleries, hotels, and at special events in California, Maryland, South Carolina, and New York. She has been instructing art since 1988.

Thursdays T Memory Matters: How’s Your Brain Health?

This interactive class will focus on brain health and wellness. Tips on building muscle memory and maintaining a healthy brain will be demonstrated. Learners will have an opportunity to sign up for a FREE Baseline Memory Screen.

Debbie Anderson has thirty-five years of experience in healthcare education. Her areas of expertise include oncology, dementia, and hospice care.

Daniel Lentz is an instructor for the Purple Angel Project. He is a Qualified Dementia Care Specialist.

T Great Poems IV - No Hidden Meanings For the fourth year, Bill Newby will lead the class in reading and discussing collections of accessible poetry; exploring and savoring the music, wit, and wisdom of well-written poems that engage, excite, and entertain.

Bill Newby is a lifelong teacher and writer. He has taught high school creative writing, co-edited several volumes of creative writing, produced the Kick-Start Poetry Readings at Hilton Head Library, and moderated Island Writers' Network's monthly Open Mic. He has been modestly published, and has received many rejection letters.

T Hurricane Matthew Response The Town of Hilton Head Island was impacted by Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016. We are still feeling its effects. This course will discuss the Town's historical planning and preparation before the arrival of Hurricane Matthew and the evacuation and response to the impacts of the storm.

Tom Dunn is a South Carolina Certified Emergency Manager and currently the Emergency Management Coordinator for the Town of Hilton Head Island.

Thursdays T The Genius of George Gershwin George Gershwin was one of the most significant and popular American composers of all times. During his short life, he amassed a treasure trove of orchestral works as well as a plethora of singable, memorable Broadway melodies. Through word and song, Carole Galli will bring to life Gershwin’s genius.

A classically trained soprano, Carole Galli has devoted thirty-three years to music education.

T Economic Factors in the Rise of Populism The United States, Great Britain, and a number of other Western democracies have experienced a shift in political outcomes which some have characterized as populism. What are the main factors that have caused this change in the "will of the people," and what effects might this have on the global economy?

Bill Snider is a Certified Financial Analyst who has held CEO and CFO positions in international and domestic banking. In addition, he has held adjunct faculty positions at Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin.

T Movies to the Max – Making the Most of Your Movie

Experience

Everyone brings a different expectation to the movie experience. We know what we like but are often warned off by the subject matter, the genre, the actors, reviews, or a miscalculated set of expectations.

Caroline McVitty will show you how you can enjoy a wider range of movies and maximize your viewing experience by managing those expectations, and expanding your knowledge of the finer points of movie-making and movie-viewing techniques.

Caroline McVitty is a former corporate attorney. More recently, she was a weekly movie reviewer for The Island Packet and now hosts a movie blog at mcvittymovies.wordpress.com.

Thursdays T U.S. Energy Strategy and Policy What does energy independence mean? Gas prices are the most visible evidence of the cost of energy. Why do catastrophes such as hurricane Harvey have an almost immediate impact on pump prices? Where are most of the refineries in the USA? Who determines Corporate Average Fuel Standards (CAFÉ) policies? How can consumers impact pump prices? Will the internal combustion engine be replaced by electric engines in automobiles? This presentation will be a non-technical overview of these important questions.

Randall Tardy has been a Transportation Engineer for forty-five years in the public and private sectors.

T From Page to Performance with Pianist Zachary Hughes In a lively lecture/recital format, pianist Zachary Hughes will present his personal process of learning to play Beethoven’s piano sonatas. First, before any piece can be performed, it must be memorized note by note and measure by measure. Zachary will demonstrate the techniques he has mastered to do this easily and efficiently. Next, he will play excerpts to illustrate the changes as he moves from technical practice to polished performance.

He will end with a brief recital illustrating how he transforms the notes on a page into beautifully interpreted music.

Zachary Hughes is a graduate of The Julliard School. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Music degree in piano performance at the University of Tennessee and was recently named Principal Keyboardist for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

Fridays T Great Decisions 2018 Dr. Isam Sakati returns for four more presentations on vital topics which could affect us all.

March 2: The Waning of Pax Americana - During the first months of Donald Trump’s presidency, the U.S. began a historic shift away from Pax Americana. Since 1945, Pax Americana has promised peaceful international relations and an open economy, buttressed by U.S. military power. In championing “America First,” President Trump has shifted the political mood toward selective U.S. engagement, where foreign commitments are limited to areas of vital U.S. interest and economic nationalism is the order of the day. Geopolitical allies and challengers alike are paying close attention.

March 9: Russia’s Foreign Policy - Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia is projecting an autocratic model of governance abroad and working to undermine the influence of liberal democracies along Russia’s borders. Russia caused an international uproar in 2016, when it meddled in the U.S. presidential election. But Putin’s foreign policy toolkit includes other instruments, from alliances with autocrats to proxy wars with the U.S. in Georgia, Ukraine and Syria. How should the United States respond?

March 16: China and America: the New Geopolitical Equation - In the last fifteen years, China has implemented a wide-ranging strategy of economic outreach and expansion of all its military and diplomatic capacities. While the United States has taken a step back from multilateral trade agreements and discarded the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), China has made inroads through efforts like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). What are Beijing’s geopolitical objectives? What policies might Washington adopt to address these initiatives?

March 23: Media and Foreign Policy - State and non-state actors today must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare, hacking, and misinformation pose complex security threats. How are players using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena? What are the implications for U.S. policy?

Dr. Isam Sakati has led the popular Great Decision discussions for the last ten years.

T Food as a Tool of Diplomacy and Weapon of War What can be done to prevent war, restore peace, and address terrorism in a world filled with conflict?

Food, a basic necessity that many take for granted, has been used as a powerful tool to address issues of conflict and violence. This session will provide an overview of how food impacts wars and impedes efforts to promote peace.

Dr. Maria Velez de Berliner is President of the Latin Intelligence Corporation and Professor of Political Violence and Terrorism at George Washington University. She is often appears on television as a commentator on domestic and global security issues.

Fridays T The Vietnamese Through the Lens-Redux By popular request, the early series on Vietnamese films is being reprised but with some new additions. The Vietnamese see themselves from very different and often surprising points of view. From the romantic to the gritty, these films reflect a unique Vietnamese vision of life and seek to inform as well as entertain.

Here are six films by Vietnamese directors that reflect contemporary views of an evolving ancient culture.

February 9: Three Seasons (1999) Three tales set in modern day Ho Chi Minh City by director Tony Bui reflect the conflict of the past with the modern as they become one.

February 16: Green Dragon (2001) Set in a Vietnamese refugee camp in California in 1975, this is a story of that experience told by one who was there, director Timothy Linh Bui. With Patrick Swayze, Forest Whitaker, and Don Duong.

February 23: Owl and the Sparrow (2009) Vietnamese-American director Stephane Gauger tells another tale of his hometown, Saigon, reminiscent of Sleepless in Seattle, with the addition of a matchmaking orphan girl named Thuy.

March 2: Buffalo Boy (2004) Directed by Minh Nguyen-Vo and set during the French occupation, this powerful coming-of-age tale depicts the rhythms of daily life and a culture determined by the mighty Mekong River.

March 9: Journey from the Fall (2007) This is the story of the Viet Kieu, the overseas Vietnamese who fled their native homeland with the 1975 fall of Saigon. It is the story of great love of country, family, courage, and loss, and of the people who made the journey.

March 16: Cyclo (1995) When a young man has his pedicab (Cyclo) stolen in Saigon, he descends into a criminal underworld not seen by the casual observer. Directed by Anh Hung Tran who gave us The Scent of Green Papaya and The Vertical Ray of the Sun. Mike McDonell has presented popular film series for LLHHI for several years. His most recent was last year's "Films for Foodies: Six Movies About Food and More."

He welcomes suggestions for future film series.

Fridays T Writing Workshop Come write with us! You'll find courage, inspiration, and support as you journey with us into the unknown and the familiar, finding satisfaction, fun, and reward.

We will encourage writers to re-enter their drafts imaginatively, with generous support from others as we work in small groups.

We will also read and discuss professional writing in various genres as sources of inspiration.

Audre Allison has led writing workshops for years, on Hilton Head and Long Island. She taught writing for twenty years at both high school and college levels. She was involved in extensive research with the National Writing project, doing presentations and workshops around the country.

How Will the United Nations Meet the Challenges of the Future?

At a time when unprecedented crises are at play on the international stage, both the President of the U.S. and the newly elected Secretary General of the U.N. took office in January of 2017. At the same time, Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, took office as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Ambassador Nancy Soderberg will discuss and pose the question, “As the U.S. confronts global challenges, can we go it alone or will we continue to need partners like the U.N.?”

Ambassador Nancy Soderberg is an American foreign policy strategist who held senior-level positions in the Clinton administration, including Deputy National Security Advisor and Alternate Representative to the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador. She resides in Jacksonville, Florida, where she is a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of North Florida, Director of UNF's Public Service Leadership Program, and President and CEO of Soderberg Global Solutions, an international consulting firm.

Special Event Sunday Brunch and a Play

We have a delightful treat for our members to kick off the winter/ spring semester starting with a Sunday, February 4 brunch at Frankie Bones. This is followed by a matinee performance of Good People at the nearby Main Street Theater, a production of the Lean Ensemble Theater. ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 40 PEOPLE. Good People is written by award winning playwright, lyricist, and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire. It was originally staged in New York, receiving two Tony nominations in 2011 for Best Play and Best Leading Actress in a Play. Francis McDormand won for her role as Margie, a Boston Southie down on her luck who thinks an old fling may be her ticket to a fresh start. Featured in this production is LLHHI member and teacher, Sheila Kadra, as Dottie.
