Dear Colleagues in Learning, We hope you had a great holiday season. We know you will enjoy the winter/spring 2019 catalogue and will sign up for as many courses as you like. There should be something for everyone in this eclectic mix. In all there are twenty-seven courses this semester.

The membership and registration fees for winter/spring are due now. The membership fee is $20 (unless you paid the whole year fee of $40 in fall). The registration fee is $45. Check the registration form at the back of the catalogue for more details.

We had a great fall semester – wonderful courses and a record membership for one semester of 187. Thanks for being such a loyal member, and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

Special Event Lean Ensemble Theater Presents A Dolls House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children and begin a life on her own. This climactic event, when Nora slams the door on everything in her life, instantly propelled world drama into the modern age.

In A Doll’s House, Part 2, many years have passed since Nora’s exit. Now there’s a knock on that same door. Nora has returned.

Directed by Blake White and featuring Taylor Harvey, J. Richey Nash, Peggy Trecker White, and Jenny Zmarzly.

Mondays T Pirates of the Lowcountry Pirates, the dreaded scourge of the seven seas, ventured up and down our Lowcountry coast in search of treasure during the golden age of piracy. Learn which famous buccaneers, men and women alike, pillaged and plundered along our local waters.

A retired English and German teacher, Dee Phillips helped to create a new "Historic Sites" presentation for the Heritage Library. She also spearheaded the Library’s efforts to create a curriculum on “Mitchelville and the Gullah Culture” for South Carolina schools.

T A Polarized Nation and Community A number of issues polarize or separate us today: gun control, abortion, race, and gender issues, for example.

Claire Sullivan will look at the economic, cultural, and political divisions which fuel this conflict and propose possible solutions.

Each class will include a short lecture, relevant media material, and open discussion.

Claire Sullivan, a longtime educator, currently conducts a weekly Community Forum class at the Bluffton library addressing these issues.

She has conducted many courses for OLLI, and is an authority on Islam.

Mondays T Four Essays To Promote Discussion Join John Miller to read and discuss four essays he has written to stimulate your thinking and promote lively discussion. Course participants are encouraged to send their email address to John Miller at jmmiller@hargray.com, and he will send the essays to you prior to each class. Here are the topics: February 4: Ethnicity, Demography, and Immigration – American ethnicity and demography are rapidly changing. Who are “Americans,” and how is immigration affecting us?

February 11: Four Commanders-in-Chief – What were the strengths and weaknesses of Abraham Lincoln, Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt as commanders-in-chief of their nations’ armed forces?

February 18: The Three Greatest Twentieth Century Winner-Losers – During and after their time in power, Nikita Khrushchev, F.W. DeKlerk, and Mikhail Gorbachev were very unpopular among their countrymen. In retrospect, what made them such impressive contributors to peace?

February 25: The Altruistic Death: Choosing to Die As an Act of Love – Is it moral to decide to die for the good of others?

T Completing the Appalachian Trail Join Jill Pellerin as she completes her 2,185 mile journey on the Appalachian Trail. Having trekked with her last year, we can expect more amusing and intriguing stories about the hike. There is sure to be more dazzling photography from her summer of 2018 adventure.

Jill Pellerin is an avid runner and triathlete, backpacker, and tennis player. She is the author of two books about the plight of endangered sea turtles.

Mondays T Our Essential and Fragile Coral Reefs Coral reef habitats are beautiful, the foundation of much of the ocean's life, and extremely fragile. This presentation by award-winning nature photographer George Cathcart will explain the importance of these lively and colorful marine areas and point out the mounting threats to their survival.

George Cathcart is a Certified Underwater Naturalist, Coral Reef Ecologist, and award-winning underwater photographer.

T Hearing Healthcare This class will cover the anatomy and physiology of hearing loss and how hearing loss can correlate to memory loss. Other topics will include hearing aid maintenance.

Aaron Shaw is a hearing healthcare professional and is board certified in hearing aid sciences.

He is executive trainer for Elite Hearing Centers of America.

T "One Small Step . . ." Reflections on the Fiftieth Anniversary

of the Lunar Landing

The landing of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, was a seminal event in the history of mankind. When President John Kennedy said that “we will place a man on the moon and return him to earth in this decade,� it was a dream yet to take flight. At the time, the nascent aerospace industry was just that, and the engineers needed to make the dream a reality were few. How the lunar landing finally became a reality and the far reaching impact of Apollo 11 on the past fifty years will be discussed.

The future of our space program will also be covered.

Chris Clayton emigrated to America in 1967 to join the NASA space program to help develop the lunar landing module, working with Apollo astronauts and engineers. More recently, Chris was co-director of The Lockheed Martin X-33, an unmanned, suborbital spaceplane developed in the 1990s.

Tuesdays T Moving to a Retirement Community Are you considering moving to one of Hilton Head’s retirement communities? Many answer, "yes"… but quickly say, “not yet.” Bill Dix will discuss why, when, and where to go as he will look in depth at the amenities and costs of The Cypress, Seabrook, TidePointe, and The Bayshore.

Bill Dix has taught investment courses for LLHHI for many years. He and his wife have lived at The Cypress for six years.

T Scouting Pink Magazine's Cover Art Pink Magazine is well known for its exquisite and eclectic art covers.

Join Elizabeth Millen as she takes you on a journey scouting for the covers. Discover what makes a good cover, be privy to some of the behind-the-scene stories, and hear about her interactions with greats such as Peter Max, Mary Whyte, Trish Biddle, and other amazing artists from all over the world.

T Great Poems V This class is for every reader, writer, or lifetime explorer who delights in accessible poems. Join popular presenter Bill Newby as he offers eight more groupings of poems and poets that speak to us, crystalize moments, and bring us to tears or laughter.

Bill Newby is a lifelong teacher of poetry and literature. He is the current moderator of the Island Writer’s Network and a frequent presenter at their Open Mic sessions.

Tuesdays T Current Issues in American National Security American national security policy is always contentious and in flux. This is certainly true given the unorthodox approach to national security by the present administration. Working from the premise that the country lacks a true framework for viewing these problems, and proposes a framework that applies to the most vexing problems currently facing US national security. These are: February 12: The Realist Paradigm and U.S. Global Interests — Following a presentation of the framework, it will be examined in terms of American involvement against the Houthis in the Yemen Civil War. February 19: The Asian Century: America, China, and North and South Korea — An examination of the changing power balance in Asia is pitting China and North Korea against democratic South Korea.

February 26: Palestinians, Israelis, Jerusalem, and the Palestinian State — An examination of these on-going problems in light of Trump administration policy changes.

March 5: Our Friend Putin: Dealing with an Expansionist Russia — No aspect of U.S. security policy has become more contentious than how we are dealing with Russia.

Tuesdays T Climate Change—How close are we to the tipping point of a

global warming catastrophe?

Environmental scientists are increasingly alarmed to see that their models tracking climate change are accelerating out of hand. Are we quickly reaching the tipping point of global warming? Join Dave DesJardins for a look into the future that should alarm us all.

Dave Desjardins, a retired research scientist, has presented many courses concerning the causes and effects of climate change.

T Give 'em Hell, Harry!

Give 'em Hell, Harry! is a biographical play and 1975 film, written by playwright Samuel Gallu. Both the play and film are a one-man show about former President of the United States Harry S. Truman. Give 'em Hell, Harry! stars James Whitmore and was directed by Steve Binder and Peter H. Hunt.

Randy Tardy hosts a weekly movie presentation for the residents of Seabrook.

Wednesdays T Current Events Join our open forum where current events, local, national, and global, are discussed in an unstructured setting. Class members are advised of the topics for the first session, and thereafter choose the subjects themselves.

Participants will be expected to do some reading in preparation for each session and to join in the group discussions. The object is to air all sides of an issue. As always, contrarian and controversial points of view are welcome!

Your moderators: Jim Riggs, a retired high school and college math teacher. He provides a liberal perspective to the discussion. Jim Van Cleave, a thirty-seven-year veteran of Procter & Gamble in marketing. He presents classic films for LLHHI and is a conservative.

T What the 2017-2018 Supreme Court Foreshadows

for the Future

Gerry Swimmer returns with a look back at the recent decisions of the Supreme Court before the installation of two new conservative Justices and speculates on what that could mean for future decisions.

March 6: Two major cases were decided on very limited grounds. This may be an indication that the justices were aware of Justice Kennedy’s impeding retirement or may have decided it was better to avoid opinions that would result in strong public opinion which might undermine the influence of the Court.

March 13: The importance of prior decisions has been a matter of serious discussion. In the past term the Court has reversed several previous opinions. The factors relied upon by the Court in these cases will be considered. In other words what is the impact of the legal term “stare decisis” and when can it be ignored?

March 20: First Amendment (guaranteeing freedom of religion) jurisprudence has been a major concern of the Roberts Court. The past term was no exception to this, and new cases in this area will be considered.

Wednesdays T The Intersection of Great Art and History In a color slide presentation with commentary, Candace Lovely will take us on a journey-in-time with background stories about the artists who documented historical events as viewed in the great museums of the world.

February 6: Impressionists Monet and Manet - In 1865, established painter Edouard Manet and then unknown-painter Claude Monet both exhibited in the Salon de Paris. Their initial meeting was fraught with contention. Over time, they became devoted friends.

February 13: The World’s Iconic Works of Art, from Leonardo’s Mona Lisa to Van Gogh’s Starry Night - Candace will explore the background stories of master painters who created the world’s most famous works of art.

February 20: “Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Lead.” Picasso is known to have said, “good artists copy, great artists steal”. Lead or steal: both suggest that creativity is a collaborative process in which one painter’s work may spark an idea for the work of another.

Candace Lovely is a prize-winning American Impressionist painter who lives and works on Hilton Head Island. She has achieved the coveted status of Copely Master.

T Reimagining Classical Ballet Three of the most popular ballets, “Swan Lake,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” and “The Nutcracker,” are classical masterpieces beloved the world over. Most audiences have a sentimental attachment to the original versions. However, sometimes we need to shake things up, see new interpretations that can re-awaken our senses, and recalibrate the stories into modern settings. In this class, we will watch and compare videos of traditional performances and the reimagined versions choreographed for a new age. We will ask…how and when did “The Nutcracker” become “The Hard Nut”?

Michelle Audet was the Founding Director of Education for The New York City Ballet. Mentored by George Balanchine, Ms. Audet pioneered innovative arts education models that brought the art of ballet to thousands of schoolchildren, teachers, and families.

Thursdays T The Legacy of Mitchelville Civil War Buff Dave DesJardins will discuss the “Great Social Experiment” – the first Black town in the USA – Mitchelville.

This seminar will begin with a discussion of the details of a pivotal battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Port Royal. This battle was the key link to the North's Anaconda Plan; a base on Hilton Head for a blockade of all Southern ports. This also led to about 20,000 freed slaves on the Island, and the foundation of the first Black town in America, Mitchelville. What became of this “Great Social Experiment” to train and educate these former slaves?

Dave DesJardins is a retired research scientist and Civil War buff who happens to live part time about halfway between Gettysburg and Antietam. Dave also serves as a judge for the Beaufort County Sea Islands Science Fair and volunteers with for Deep Well Project.

T Downsizing Workshop Chip Collins, prominent Island realtor, will provide you with key takeaways about real estate today and how to put your best foot forward when you decide it’s time to downsize.

He’ll discuss logistics, important home repairs and updates, and navigating your way through this stressful process.

Chip Collins is the owner and Broker-in-Charge of the Collins Realty Group, founded in 2002.

Thursdays T Estate Planning for the "New Normal" The 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has created a “New Normal” in estate planning. Now is the time to review your wills to make certain they reflect your wishes, state law, and realistic expectations for return on investments.

The class will also cover the “Top Ten Estate Planning Pitfalls and How To Avoid Them." There will be plenty of time for questions.

Alisa McCray is a partner with the law firm of Olivetti, McCray, and Withrow on Hilton Head.

Alisa practices in the area of estate planning and probate law.

T The Fascinating Ecosystem of the Port Royal Sound This class will provide an overview of the health and biology of the ecosystem of the Port Royal Sound and Lowcountry waterways. It will include the plastic bag ban, a discussion of the black gill disease in our shrimp, and a disease killing our resident dolphin population.

On March 21, following the class, up to twenty of the attendees will have an opportunity to take a twohour cruise of the Port Royal Sound area aboard the Spartina. There will be an extra fee for those electing to take the cruise.

Amber Kuehn's background includes a graduate degree in Marine Biology and eighteen years of experience with marine science field work. She is responsible for our area's dolphin and sea turtle program and responds to reports of their deaths and strandings.

Thursdays T Gardening for Butterflies and Hummingbirds In this course, Sue Roderus will provide all the information you need to transform your garden into a sanctuary for butterflies and/or hummingbirds.

February 7: Beginning a butterfly garden can be as simple as choosing flowering plants that will invite adult butterflies to your garden to feed. However, butterflies will lay eggs only on the plants that will nourish their caterpillars and these are critical to their survival. Learn how to choose plants in your garden to support the whole life cycle of the butterflies found in our area.

February 14: While hummingbird feeders are fine, planting a garden full of hummingbird-attracting plants is the most reliable method for successfully luring these beautiful and unique birds to your yard.

Learn about native and non-native flowering plants that do well in our area and that hummingbirds rely on as a source of nectar.

Sue Roderus is a Master Naturalist and Master Gardener. She is co-leader of the Hummingbird- Butterfly Garden in Sun City.

T Drawing Basics and Spontaneous Watercolor Painting Do you love to paint, but get bogged down getting the drawing to look right? This class covers basic perspective and proportion as well as instruction in spontaneous methods for watercolor painting. Come prepared to draw and paint from studio still life and from your own reference photographs. Each class will begin with a demonstration designed especially for the day’s learning.

All participants will receive a supply list well before the first class.

Alexandra Sharma has a Masters in Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary. She is represented locally by the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. Fridays T Four Films by the Coen Brothers As quirky as they are brilliant, the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, are national treasures. Join Mike McDonell as he features four of the brothers' finest films.

February 8: Blood Simple (1985) The Coens' first film is a gripping tale of double-cross and murder in a small town and a perfect example of modern film noir. Starring Dan Hedaya and Frances McDormand.

February 15: Raising Arizona (1987) A comedy about a small-time robber who decides to marry and settle down with his former jailer. But they have trouble in the baby department and decide to take matters into their own hands. Starring Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter.

February 22: Fargo (1996) A small-town Minnesota car salesman hires two thugs to kidnap his wife so he can collect the ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. Once people start dying, the very chipper and very pregnant town police chief is on the case. Starring Frances McDormand and William H. Macy.

March 1: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) A comedy set during 1930's Mississippi loosely based on Homer's "Odyssey" and featuring George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Turturo, is a Coen Bothers tour de force. It also has one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.

Mike McDonell has a life-long love of films, especially foreign and indies. He has been showing them for LLLHHI audiences for so long, he is amazed that there are still so many waiting to be shown! Mike welcomes suggestions for future classes.

Fridays T Creative Non-Fiction Writing Workshop Not being able to write is a learned disability. We are all writers with unique voices and stories to tell.

Some become geniuses like Shakespeare and Dickinson. But we all know that a writer needs safety, self-confidence, focus, and practice. Together we will help one another develop these conditions that lead us find our own genius and make us want to sit down and write.

In class we will read professional writing that inspires us to develop craft that produces fresh, true, concrete, and vivid writing.

Audre Allison has led writing workshops for years on Hilton Head Island and Long Island. She taught writing for thirty years at the high school and college levels.

Six Sessions: 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Fridays: February 22, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 Hilton Head Library, (Beach City Road). Class Limit: 20

T The Web of Life – Flesh Eating Bacteria, Antibiotics, and Us Environmentalist Dave DesJardins will sift through the evidence of the web of life to provide a brief guide as to what we currently know, and what we don't know, about how life on this planet exists in a delicate balance.

March 8: Bacteria, the building blocks of all life on this planet. We are in an on-going battle to live in harmony with (and at the convenience of) bacteria. Learn about antibiotics, micro biomes, and “good” versus “bad” bacteria.

March 15: Fungi, so much more than wild mushrooms that can poison you. Antibiotics clean contaminated soils and are the key to successful farming and gardening.

March 22: Homo Sapiens, atop the tree of life with so many superior capabilities. Yet we live only at the convenience of bacteria and fungi.

Dave DesJardins, a retired research scientist and lifelong gardener, is a certified Master Gardener in three states. He has foraged for wild mushrooms for many years.

In Remembrance

T Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island wishes to

acknowledge the contributions of the late Dr. Jeanne Audet who gave so much to our organization. She was a lifelong learner from the beginning . . . on the Board, curriculum committee, lecturer for Creative Retirement Center, and The Learning Exchange which became Lifelong Learning of HHI. She is perhaps best remembered as “Docstar,” for her many classes on the wonders of the Universe. She was proud to be one of a hundred science educators named “Solar System Ambassador for NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.”

In her honor, LLHHI has donated $250 to both Volunteers in Medicine and The Coastal Discovery Museum.

Membership in LLHHI Membership Dues: If you did not sign up for fall classes, your membership fee of $20 for winter/ spring is due now. If you paid only $20 for fall, an additional $20 is due now. If you have paid $40 in fall for the full year, you owe nothing.

Winter Course Registration: The winter registration fee is $45. This allows you to take as many courses as you wish. Also, you are welcome to bring a friend one time to any course.
