Dear Colleagues in Learning,

The aftermath of Hurricane Matthew is still with us, but progress is being made. LLHHI was sorry to have to cancel our fall classes, but we have carried many classes forward to the winter/spring semester – Transportation: Wheels and Ways, Meaningful and Enriching Travel, Texas v. The United States, The Muslim Brotherhood, Escape From Dixie, A Musical Biography of Irving Berlin, The Magic of Johnny Mercer, Great Decisions, Maximize Your Cruise Experience and Steven Hawking: An Unfettered Mind. Fall courses carried forward to fall 2017 are: Codes and Code Breakers, Current Events, Green Transportation, Hitchcock Films, and Lowcountry Architecture.

We hope you enjoy the winter/spring 2017 catalog and will sign up for as many courses as you like.

There should be something for everyone in this eclectic mix. In all, there are twenty-eight courses this semester.

It is time to renew your LLHHI membership. Everyone who paid the $40 membership fee and the $45 registration fee for the fall semester are paid in full for the winter/spring semester. If you are now joining the membership fee is $40 and the registration fee for winter/spring is $45. Please check the registration form at the back of the catalog to see how you can pay by check or credit card.

For limited classes, use our website to register immediately. Registration by mail will take longer.

This past year saw a great membership increase. At the end of our academic year, we had 291 members. We are, however, always looking for new members, so bring a friend to a class and encourage him or her to join LLHHI. Enjoy your classes and thanks for being a loyal member, and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

Mondays TG reat Poems III - No Hidden Meanings Together we will read and discuss thematically grouped collections of accessible poems. Our goal will be to explore and savor the music, wit, and wisdom of well-written poems that engage, excite, and entertain.

Bill Newby has been a lifelong teacher and writer. He has taught high school creative writing, co-edited several volumes of creative writing, produced the Kick-Start Poetry Readings at the Hilton Head Library, been modestly published, and received many rejection letters.

Mondays T Meaningful and Enriching Travel Travel guides simply do not prepare us for what our photographs reveal to us when we get home. Stimulated by their experiences, our instructors report they often do more research after a journey than before. Hear from two seasoned travelers about how their exposure to the history and cultures of other lands has contributed to their fuller appreciation of the uniqueness of people they’ve met along the way.

February 6 - Mieke Smit: The Circumnavigation of the Black Sea February 13 - Joan Deery: The Treasures of Persia February 20 - Joan Deery: Exploration of Cuban Culture February 27 - Mieke Smit: Cruising the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar Mieke Smit has been driven by an innate curiosity about other countries since her first ocean voyage from her homeland in The Netherlands to New York. She has since explored many corners of the globe developing her distinct taste for history, archeology, art and the cultures of the people. She has presented her travel talks for over sixteen years on the Island.

Joan Deery’s graduation present from college was a three-month Eurorail pass. Continuing to travel in her career with IBM, she visited many Asian countries while living in Japan. She established a sincere appreciation for the commonalities and differences in the people she has met and continues to meet on her frequent trips abroad.

T Transportation: Wheels and Ways A Transportation Engineer and self-described “tree hugger,” Randy Tardy shares his perspective on 21st century transportation challenges in the context of preserving our Hilton Head Island paradise.

Here are just some of the subjects he will touch on in this two-session course: What is the role of government at all levels in getting over our love affair with the automobile? How can we protect pedestrians from drivers? Why do roundabouts make roads safer? Why do we have traffic jams? What are the common mistakes in parking lots? Should we embrace hybrid and all-electric automobiles?

What is the role of bicycles and public transportation in solving our problems?

Randall Tardy has been a Transportation Engineer for forty-five years in the public and private sectors.

Tuesdays T Stock Market Investing for Seniors Bill Dix is back with another course on investment strategies. As our needs change, we should be reexamining our investment decisions in terms of risk and reward. Preservation of capital should be uppermost in considering which investments best suit our needs.

Also discussed will be how to evaluate investment advisors. Are their suggestions always in your best interests, and how well do their recommendations perform? Are they worth their fees? And how will our new President affect our long term investments?

Bill Dix spent thirty-four years on Wall Street retiring as Senior Vice-President-Investments with Smith Barney, now Morgan Stanley. He leads a monthly “Wall Street Week” class at The Cypress.

T Texas v. The United States Gerry Swimmer returns with a one-session course on a crucial case now wending its way through the courts: Texas v. The United States. Texas has been joined by twenty-five other states challenging President Obama’s executive order granting protection to families of illegal aliens from possible deportation. The issue is whether or not this order is a violation of the Separation of Powers. The District Court believes it is. What, if anything, will the Supremes have to say?

Gerry Swimmer is a retired executive of Ingersoll Rand Company. Gerry has taught many courses in constitutional law for LLHHI. One Session: 10 AM to 12 Noon, Tuesday: February 7 • The Seabrook (Off Pope Avenue.)

TE scape From Dixie First Lieutenant John Lafler was captured at the Battle of Plymouth, North Carolina, in April 1864, and endured ten months of captivity in Confederate prisons. During this period, he escaped four times before successfully returning to the Union lines. This course will describe his experiences and explain how the P.O.W. system was administered by both sides during the Civil War. 4

John Ball, a descendant of Lt. Lafler, is a retired military fighter pilot and civilian test pilot. He instructed at the USAF and USN test pilot schools for twenty-two years. He has written several books, including Escape From Dixie, about his ancestor’s Civil War experiences.

Tuesdays T Presidential Power During Wartime This is a study of how six Presidents used and abused their power while conducting four wars: Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War, Franklin Roosevelt in World War II, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon during the Vietnam War, and George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts.

The focus will be on legal powers provided by the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court decisions, the effect war has on civil liberties, and civilian control of the military.

TW hat is Happening to our Bees?

David Arnal, a local beekeeper with twenty-seven years of beekeeping experience, will explain the intricacies of keeping bees and how humans have been able to manipulate this social insect to their benefit, including the importance of bees to our agriculture and food supply.

He will also focus on the “Colony Collapse Disorder,” a disease that had spread throughout honey bee colonies in the U.S. and Europe, causing the annual loss of more than one-third of honeybee colonies, with devastating consequences to agriculture, other pollinators, and our economy.

David Arnal is Director of the South Carolina Master Beekeeper Program and President of the Beaufort-Jasper Beekeepers Association.

TW hat We Wore: Home-Based Cloth Production Prior to the

Industrial Revolution

This class will begin by describing the types of fibers used to produce cloth and clothing prior to the industrial revolution, including cotton, wool, hemp, flax, and silk. Cultivation, processing, spinning, and weaving and knitting will then be discussed. Cloth and textile needs in the northern hemisphere and more specifically in early America, will be a focus. There will be spinning, knitting, and weaving demonstrations.

Wendy Avery is an experienced knitter, spinner, and history researcher.

Tuesdays T The Watercolor Experience: Light and Action This course will focus on the techniques and methods specific to watercolor that are used to achieve the effect of light and shadow and to add movement to a painting, whether still life, landscape, or figure.

Each class begins with a demonstration followed by painting from still life or photos. Beginners will be comfortable in this class, and those with more experience will be challenged.

For the first class you will need: Watercolor pigments--Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt, Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, and Burnt Sienna. (If you already have paints, bring what you have.)

Watercolor paper--10” x 14” or smaller is good. Brushes, etc.—One round and one flat style brush, a pencil, and soft eraser, and a small wide-mouth water jar.

Alexandra Sharma has a Masters in Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary. She is represented locally by the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. T American Impressionism and the Boston School of Painting Local artist Candace Lovely takes you on a lavishly illustrated artistic journey that spans nearly two centuries.

February 7: The development of French Impressionism in the 1800’s and its influence on American painters studying abroad.

February 14: The Boston School, often classified as American Impressionists, was a group of Boston-based painters active in the first three decades of the twentieth century.

February 21: How an American Impressionist came to paint genteel portraits, picturesque landscapes, and young women and children in filmy garments and beach settings.

February 28: Sketching daily life on Hilton Head Island with paint markers in the American Impressionist style.

Candace Whittemore Lovely is an American Impressionist painter and Copley Master, trained in the Boston School tradition. Candace now lives and works on Hilton Head Island.

Wednesdays T Current Events When classes begin, President Donald J. Trump will have just been inaugurated and a new House and Senate will be seated. His first 100 days should be especially news worthy.

Join in this lively, informal discussion of local, national, and international topics. Participants will be expected to do some reading on the topics chosen for each week.

As always, all points of view are welcome.

Your moderators are Rick Anderson and Jim Van Cleave. Rick is a retired psychiatrist from Baltimore. Jim is a marketing veteran of Procter & Gamble. Rick leans liberal and Jim conservative. Both are news junkies.

T Famous Accounting Frauds For years, people have trusted the businesses they invest in and work with. Repeated accounting scandals have weakened that trust and have resulted in new government regulations.

This course will review some infamous fraud cases, including Enron, Bernie Madoff, Tyco, Arthur Andersen, and Worldcom. We will also touch on the effect of new legislation, including SarbanesOxley and Dodd-Frank.

Glenn Frankle is a retired CPA whose career was in accounting, finance, and business management. He worked with KPMG as a senior audit manager and taught in their national education program. He also taught accounting courses at Duquesne University.

T South Carolina’s 2017 Solar Eclipse On August 21, 2017, weather permitting, you will be able to view a total solar eclipse from parts of South Carolina, and a near-total eclipse from Hilton Head Island. This course will explore the different types of eclipses and how they are predicted. You will see the path of the 2017 total eclipse. Eye protection will be emphasized.

Paul Weiss is a retired physician with a longstanding interest in science.

Wednesdays T The Music of Dvorak from Bohemia to Spillville, Iowa Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) was born in Bohemia where his main inspirations were folk music and dancing. His lyrical works came to the attention of Jeanette Thurber, President of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. She invited him to come to America to create an American sound. For inspiration he travelled to Spillville, Iowa, a small Czech enclave, which reminded him of the peace and serenity of his youth. Here he composed many of his finest works. This course will include his cello concerto, piano trios, symphonies, and more.

Jane Davis Sine has provided us with music appreciation courses for many years, She started giving adult courses at Marymount College in New York before settling in Hilton Head in the fall and winter months. For eighteen years she represented classical musicians and conductors, and at one time played double bass professionally.

TT he Nature Conservancy’s Work with Oysters in

South Carolina

Joy Brown will explain the role oysters play in our coastal lives – from their life cycle to how their empty shells can be used to build reefs. She will talk about the state of living shorelines and where we are headed with the development of new permit opportunities from S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Army Corps of Engineers. She will wrap up the session with an interactive project on large-scale reef restoration siting.

Joy Brown has a Master’s in Biology and Coastal Zone Studies from The University of West Florida.

Since 2008, she has been with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, where she has implemented oyster restoration projects and helped raise support for the new Nature Conservancy marine program.

Wednesdays T Caregiving: The Importance of Home Care to Keep Seniors

Living Independently

Home care has become a popular, affordable service that can help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. This course will teach you about being a caregiver. It will explain what home care is and the services it can provide. The course also discusses the differences between living at home, independent living, and assisted living.

Zena Smith has a Masters degree in Administration of Human Services. She owns At Your Door, one of many home care providers on Hilton Head.

T The Muslim Brotherhood The Muslim Brotherhood was established in 1928 by an Egyptian school teacher whose initial goal was to instill Islamic ideals throughout the Arab world. The organization quickly gained the support of other Islamic groups for its political activism and charity work in setting up hospitals and businesses. However, the movement also suffered from periodic government crackdowns for alleged terrorist activities.

This class will take you on a journey from the birth of the Muslim Brotherhood as a charitable organization to its condemnation as a terrorist organization and recent overthrow of the democratically elected government of Egypt.

Dr. David Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, was born and raised in Jerusalem; at age 18, he immigrated to the United States to continue his education. He received his PhD from the University of Houston in Chemical Engineering. He retired to Hilton Head after a thirty-four-year career with Union Carbide/Dow Chemical.

and American Exceptionalism

The continental USA became a unique country because, for over three centuries, we anticipated stretching “from sea to shining sea.” The conquest of the American West inevitably led to imperialism, but also to a strong belief in national exceptionalism. The course will investigate six steps by which we evolved into the America we are today.

February 23: Slavery As a Form of Imperialism March 2: Military Imperialism – The Spanish-American War, Theodore Roosevelt and George W. Bush March 9: American Evangelicalism and American Exceptionalism John Miller has taught many continuing education courses for Case/Western Reserve University, USC-Beaufort, and Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island.

TT he Magic of Johnny Mercer This entertaining class will highlight the immense impact Johnny Mercer made on The American Songbook. Carole Galli will narrate, sing, and engage the class in songs Americans are still singing. As with many artists, Mercer’s life was not without controversy, which will add a little “spice” to the presentation.

A classically trained vocalist, Carole Galli devoted thirty-three years as a music educator in Michigan.

Carole has performed with the Hilton Head Symphony and at The Jazz Corner.

Thursdays TC ontemporary Terrorism Terrorism has become a ubiquitous part of modern life, and one that is changing. In the U.S. and elsewhere, the large operations of organizations like Al Qaeda and ISIS have given way to “lone wolf� attacks of shady origins. This course will examine the bases of terrorism in international life, how it is evolving, what can be done about it, and how it may evolve in the future.

TA Musical Biography of Irving Berlin Join James Pegolotti for the story of Irving Berlin, his life and songs, with piano selections and video segments from films and documentaries.

James Pegolotti has presented similar programs for LLHHI on Johnny Mercer and George Gershwin. He is a retired professor who began such programs over a dozen years ago in Danbury, Connecticut.

Fridays TG reat Decisions Dr. Isam Sakati returns with another four-session course in his popular Great Decisions series.

March 3: The Future of Europe - The European Union, which has helped secure peace in Europe for seventy years, now faces an uncertain future. Amid a refugee crisis, lingering financial recession, and the constant specter of terrorism, unity seems more imperative than ever. But the Brexit vote underscores the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. What will post-Brexit Europe look like, and how can U.S. foreign policy adapt?

March 10: Trade and Politics - The U.S. political mood toward free trade has gone sour. The popular narrative today suggests trade means that China wins and we lose. But do the numbers support that conclusion? Obtaining an accurate picture of U.S. economic stature requires a careful and critical look at the real effects of our trade deals. Only then can the U.S. develop appropriate policy solutions for the challenges at hand.

March 17: Conflict in the South China Sea - The South China Sea is a hotbed of competing territorial claims, with China, its most vocal claimant, seeking to dominate the region. Despite rising international pressure, including an unfavorable ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, China staunchly defends its aggressive policies in the region. Preventing tensions from boiling over is a matter of careful diplomacy.

March 24: Saudi Arabia in Transition - As Saudi Arabia struggles to adjust to a drastic decline in oil revenue, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman attempts to boldly transform the country and shift more power to the younger generation. At the same time, many countries, including the U.S., deplore the the kingdom’s lack of democracy, poor human rights record, and the promotion of radical Islam. Criticism of Saudi Arabia is rising in Congress. Both countries need each other, but they are at a crossroads in their relations.

Six Movies About Food and More Food, glorious food! These six delicious cinematic banquets envelop stories of comedy and drama. Selected and presented by Mike McDonell, they include an international selection of some of the best and least known films with culinary themes. Bon appetit!

February 10: Big Night (1996) Two immigrant Italian brothers (Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub) open an “authentic” Italian restaurant in 1950s New Jersey only to face bankruptcy. They risk it all on one Big Night!

February 17: Tampopo (1985) Can the widow Tampopo ever master the art of the noodle? Who knows? But the premise is the launch pad for Juzo Itami’s unforgettable comedic collision of yakuza film, western, and slapstick comedy.

This is one of Roger Ebert’s favorites!

February 24: Like Water for Chocolate (1992) Tita and Pedro are passionately in love. But their love is forbidden. To be near Tita, Pedro marries her sister.

And to be near Pedro, Tita becomes the family cook, preparing extraordinary meals to express her passion. More will be revealed!

March 3: Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) Ang Lee’s delicious tale about food, fatherhood, and family.

March 10: Julie and Julia (2009) An ambitious young woman vows to prepare 524 recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook, The Art of French Cooking, in record time. Starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Stanley Tucci.

March 17: Babette’s Feast (1987) The film is adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen and set in late 19th century Denmark. It is a combination of earthiness and the sublime, and perhaps the ultimate film about food.

Mike McDonell has presented popular film series for LLHHI for several years.

His most recent was last year’s “Cinema Potpourri: Six Films Worth Seeing or Seeing Again“. He welcomes suggestions for upcoming film series!

Fridays TW riting Workshop Come write with us! Find courage, inspiration, and support as you journey with us into the unknown and the familiar that is satisfying, fun, and rewarding.

We will emphasize revision, encouraging writers to re-enter their drafts imaginatively with the benefit of time and generous feedback from others in small groups.

We will also read and discuss short pieces of professional writing in various genres as examples and sources of inspiration.

Audre Allison has led writing workshops for years, on both Hilton Head and Long Island.

She taught writing for twenty years at high school and college levels.

Your Favorite Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales

For centuries nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and children’s musical adaptations have been a part of every culture. Collectively, they have served to reinforce the moral nature of a society and taught children the cadence of language.

On a darker side, those sweet nursery rhymes and fairy tales often proved to be a potent vehicle to smuggle in coded or thinly veiled messages about religious persecution, poverty, political unrest, and even murder.

This three session course will focus on the true and sometimes dubious histories of some of your favorite nursery rhymes, Grimm’s fairy tales, and stage and screen interpretations and adaptations.

March 11: Did Lewis Carroll magically transform Humpty Dumpty from a cannon into an egg? Was “Mary, Mary Quite Contrary” a solicitation for gardening advice?

Or, “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush,” was it a children’s game or a song about female prisoners in the Wakefield Prison in England? Kristen Sakati will take you on a journey back into your childhood to examine the history of many of the nursery rhymes your parents recited and sang to you.

March 18: Rosemary Staples will dig into the history, culture and origins of the Grimm’s Fairy Tales. She will start out with a review of the Brothers Grimm from Germany and their collection of 210 bedtime tales. Then, reveal the real story behind the stories and show how world events, plagues, war, and cultural traditions shaped such favorites as “Rapunzel,” “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and other well-known tales.

March 25: Taking the oral and written traditions of storytelling to the stage and screen, Michelle Audet will present artistic interpretations of classic fairy tales that have long served as metaphors for humankind’s fears and dreams. She will show videos of ballets, musicals, opera, film, and television illustrating that the ethical core of fairy tales is the idea that peace and happiness can only exist with the triumph of good over evil.

Saturdays TT he Sixth Annual Andy Greenstein Lecture

LHHI is proud to present this annual lecture honoring the memory of our first president and his dedication to an informed conversation on important contemporary issues and personalities.

Stephen Hawking: An Unfettered Mind Kitty Ferguson became acquainted with Stephen Hawking and his family when she and her husband lived in Cambridge, England, in the late 1980’s. Around that time, she retired from a career as a singer and conductor and began writing and lecturing about science and scientists for readers and audiences with little or no scientific background.

Her 1991 biography of Hawking became an international best-seller.

Her seven later books have appeared to critical acclaim in more than thirty languages.

A newly revised and updated edition of her 2012 biography Stephen Hawking: An Unfettered Mind appears this year to honor his seventy-fifth birthday.

Kitty Ferguson and her husband now divide their time between Cambridge and Bluffton.

Hurricane Matthew: The hurricane and subsequent clean-up necessitated cancelling our fall classes. Therefore, if you paid your $40 annual membership fee and your $45 registration fee for fall you owe nothing additional to enjoy our winter/spring classes.

Annual Membership Dues: If you did not sign up for the fall semester, to attend classes in our winter/spring semester the membership the fee is $40.

Winter/Spring Course Registration: The winter/spring registration fee for members who didn’t pay in the fall is $45. This allows you to take as many courses as you wish. Also, you are welcome to bring a friend one time to any course.
