Dear Lifelong Learners, After the roller coaster ride we have all had to endure during the past eighteen months thanks to the Covid-19 virus and all its variants, we are hopeful that we can soon begin to resume our normal lives.

As you know, with precautions in place, LLHHI offered limited outdoor class last winter spring and an abbreviated selection of classes this past fall term. We are now thrilled to present a full lineup of classes during our current winter/spring session.

Our online catalog makes it easier than ever to register for as many classes as your time and interests allow. If you prefer, you can sign up by mail by printing out the registration page.

Also, because we don't know how the Covid virus is going to impact our lives this coming winter, we will continue to take recommended precautions while in the classroom venues. Masks will be optional but recommended and available at the check-in table.

Mondays T I nvesting in a Changing Post-Covid World and

Protecting Your Assets from Probate and South Carolina Transfer Taxes February 7: Investing in a post-pandemic world has become a challenge. Many basic industries have been changed to the point where recovery is questionable. Other industries, born in a virtual world, have flourished and now many believe their purchase risk-reward is questionable. Learn where investors can find reliable income and growth in these uncertain times.

February 14: Have you made sure your hard-earned assets are ready for eventual transfer without costly probate delays, especially in South Carolina. Are your wills, powers of attorney, and living wills up to date? This course will give you the latest up-to-date guidance.

Bill Dix retired in 1995 to Hilton Head after a thirty-five-year career at Smith Barney in New York City. He has led many investment classes for LLHHI. In the first session, Bill will be assisted by Janet Williams, Vice President and Senior Advisor at Merrill Lynch on Hilton Head.

Alisa McCray, partner at Olivetti, McCray and Withrow specializing in estate planning and trust administration, will lend her expertise to session two.

Sea Turtle Nesting Program

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Hilton Head beaches May-August and their hatchlings scurry to the water July-October. Amber Kuehn has spent over twenty years monitoring sea turtle nesting beaches and will share the biology, research, and current status of our sea turtle population.

Amber Kuehn is a Marine Biologist and currently manages the Sea Turtle Patrol on Hilton Head.

Tuesdays TS upreme Court Decisions February 8: The past and present law regarding vaccine mandates beginning with Jacobson v. Massachusetts in 1905.

February 15: Supreme Court precedents concerning voting restrictions and vote counting cases in 2120. We will discuss the precedents developed during Jim Crow.

February 22: A discussion of the relevance of Justice Harlan's dissent in Plessy v Fergusson, and how it relates to Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard University.

March 1: A discussion about the Texas and Mississippi abortion laws challenging the 1973 Supreme Court Decision, Roe v. Wade.

TT he Artistry and History of Making a Great Beer This presentation will begin with an award-winning short video that highlights the artistry that goes into the making of a great beer. As a follow up to the video, Bob Miggliaccio will outline the long history of beer, the fundamentals of making various types of beer, and the influence of new microwave breweries.

All class participants will be invited to a follow up special VIP tour of the presenter’s new Hilton Head Brewing Company brewery scheduled for Thursday, February 24 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. Bob Migliaccio has been a professional brewer for twenty-one years.

Tuesdays TH aiku Workshop: A Way to Connect with Others In this, her third class for LLHHI, Miho Kinnas will concentrate on writing haiku collaboratively. Probably because of the isolation we all have experienced in the past two years, she has found participants at all levels of experience find this type of exercise surprisingly enjoyable while allowing plenty of room for individual style.

Miho Kinnas has taught haiku workshops for hundreds of people from four to over ninety. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in creative poetry writing and is a published author and translator.

TP arkinson's Disease: What Do We Know and

What Help is Available?

This course will provide a detailed overview of Parkinson's disease, the national and local support available for those with Parkinson's and their care givers, and the value of exercise to delay the progression of the disease.

Rick Ostrander is a leader of the Beaufort, Port Royal, and Lady's Island Parkinson’s support group and ambassador for Parkinson's Foundation Aware in Care. He will be joined by Scott Ryder who has Parkinson’s and is a board member of the Parkinson’s Foundation. Also contributing will be Heath Babb, a certified trainer for the Delay the Disease program.

Tuesdays TW atercolor Painting:

The Freedom to be Loose Develop a style that maximizes watercolor spontaneity and expressive freedom. This course will focus on how you can use brush strokes to make the shape and form of your subject without picky detail. Developing a loose technique is the groundwork that will enable you to paint intuitively. Specific brush technique, juxtaposition of values and the use of visual texture and rhythm to create your scene are the focus of this course. We will paint from life and from your reference photos.

Here is what you need to bring to class: •W ater color paints: Reds--Cadmium Red and Alizarin Crimson. Blues--Ultramarine and Phthalo Blue. Yellows--Cadmium and Lemon Yellow. Greens--Sap and Viridian Green.

If you already have water color paints, bring what you have. If buying paints, there are some artist sets that include a basic range of colors like those listed above.

• Watercolor paper: Size of your choice. (10’ x 14’ or smaller is good).

• One or two watercolor brushes, round and/or flat.

•W atercolor Palette (The plastic, folding kind is excellent) or a white plate to put paint on and for mixing.

• Pencil and soft eraser •W ide-mouth container for water. (An empty cottage cheese or yogurt container is perfect).

Alexandra Sharma has a Masters of Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary. She is represented local by the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. Tuesdays TD ragonflies and Damselflies of the Lowcountry Dragonflies and damselflies are beautiful, familiar insects at Lowcountry ponds and lagoons. This presentation, incorporating slides, specimens, and short videos will introduce you to the life-history and behavior of these insects and their ecological importance.

Vicky McMillan is a retired biologist specializing in dragonfly behavior. She was formerly on the faculty of Colgate University, in Hamilton, New York. She now writes the “Natural Lowcountry” column for The Island Packet.

TP utting it Together: The Journey from Script to Stage You enter the theater, settle into your seat, and the lights dim. You are transported to another reality--the world of the play. Did you ever wonder how this world was created?

In this class, actor/director/producer Blake White will take you through the steps involved in the creative process that brings a concept to life on the stage.

Mitchellville offers a special opportunity for this exploration.

The play has been in the works since 2017. You will follow this journey from the very beginning: choice of a playwright, initial draft, refinements, technical and artistic staffing, casting, marketing--and opening night.

Participants in this class will have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for this play about a slice of Hilton Head's history. The play will run from March 17 to March 27.

Blake White is the Founding and Executive Director of Lean Ensemble Theater.

He is member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. His credits run from Hilton Head Island to New Mexico.

Wednesdays TC urrent Events This popular class allows participants to freely express their views on the issues of the day. Topics will be chosen with input from the students, including local, national, and international events. As always, all opinions are welcome and all will be respected.

Bruce Lerner is a retired sales and marketing executive and small business owner.

He provides a liberal perspective to the discussion.

Jim Van Cleave is a thirty-seven-year veteran of Proctor & Gamble in advertising, media, and TV production. He is a conservative.

T I ntrepid and the Secret War in World War II Learn the story of William Stevenson, the man called Intrepid, who played a vital role in the Allied victory in World War II. Stevenson was a WW I air ace, industrialist, and millionaire business man. During the rise of the Nazis, he had access to German rearmament plans which he shared with the British.

In 1940, Churchill sent him to America to manage British intelligence operations. He became a confident of FDR and was able to influence U.S. public opinion in favor of the war in Europe. Stevenson helped the U.S. build up the OSS which became the CIA in 1947.

Many believe William Stevenson was Ian Fleming’s inspiration for 007 James Bond.

CAPT USN (RET) Gregory Blackburn has a PhD in Operations Research and had a thirty-year career in cryptology and intelligence.

Thursdays TC reative Non-Fiction Not being able to write is a learned disability.

We are all writers with unique voices and stories to tell. Some writers are geniuses...like Shakespeare and Dickinson, but we all know that writers need safety, self-confidence, focus, and practice. Together we will help one another develop these conditions that lead us to our own genius and make us want to sit down and write.

In class we will read and discuss professional writing that inspires us to develop fresh, true, concrete, and vivid writing.

Audre Allison has led writing workshops here and on Long Island and taught at both the high school and college level.

TF rontiers of Science This class will feature a series of TED talks describing how science and technology will revolutionize the world in the next ten years followed by a lively discussion period.

February 10: Learn about CRISPR, a family of DNA sequences found in certain bacteria which can generate entirely new life forms. (Think recreating dinosaurs, eliminating genetic disease, and making designer babies.)

February 17: The focus of this session will deal with artificial intelligence. Learn how the geometric expansion of computer power impacts things like self-driving cars and creates computers smarter than us in many fields.

February 24: This session will focus on our current climate crisis. We will explore what steps do we need to take in order to avoid reaching the tipping point.

Dave Desjardins is a retired research scientist and has been a Science Fair judge for over twenty-five years. He has presented a number of courses/seminars on these topics in the past.

Thursdays TC utting the Cord: Save Hundreds on your Cable Bill This seminar will explain some of the key changes in the way the Internet has evolved and demonstrate how you can drop your expensive (and always increasing) cable TV subscription and still see your favorite shows, movies, and specials, all at much lower cost.

Bob Gentzler is a retired PhD chemical industry executive having been with DuPont and Amoco for over thirty years. In recent years, he has been following evolving computer technology and serving as a board member of the Hilton Head Computer Club.

T J im Crow and Damn Yankees: Home Rule Returns

to the South by 1876

This class will discuss the failure of reconstruction in the South following the end of the Civil War followed by a return to racial subjugation by 1876. You will learn the origins of Jim Crow and why folks from up north are forever damned by true southerners.

TW as the Civil War Reconstruction a Success or Failure?

A devastating Civil War is over with the total defeat of the confederacy. With slavery abolished, the south’s entire economic system is in ruins. But this only part of what the south is dealing with: Atlanta has been burned to the ground and Sherman’s army has left a thirty-mile-wide swath of scorched earth from Georgia all the way to Savannah.

Cheer up, Reconstruction is under way and the carpet baggers are here to lend a hand!

Danny Crooks is a former professor of sociology and retired licensed guide for Historic Charleston and will present both courses.

Thursdays TH udson’s Seafood House on the Dock:

An Island Landmark

Built in 1912 as a seafood processing plant, Hudson’s has been a family-owned business since the 1920s, primarily as a seafood processing plant. Owned and named by the venerable J. B. Hudson, Sr., thousands of oysters were processed by Hudson’s Seafood.

These oysters were brought in by oar-powered boats known as bateaux, shucked at Hudson’s, then sent by barge to the Northeast. The discarded shells were dispersed creating the very peninsula and foundation on which the restaurant currently stands.

This class will be presented on the dock at Hudson’s

by Andrew Carmines, the founder and president of Shell Ring Oyster Company and general manager of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks. You will learn the amazing history of this popular restaurant, the effects of Hurricane Matthew, information about oyster farming, artificial oyster reefs, and how oyster beds and reefs are essential to salt marshes where they help control erosion and filter and cleanse huge volumes of water.

Andrew Carmines, besides being general manager of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, has also been involved in several environmental initiatives such as the Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Project and is a member of the Southern Shrimpers Alliance and the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association.

Thursdays TA ncient India and its Present-Day Festivals India has an ancient and fascinating history with Gods and Goddesses, both mythical and real, playing important roles in the country's culture, traditions, and religions.

Even more fascinating is how the roles of the many Gods and Goddesses have continued over the centuries and still play a major role in modern holidays and festivals.

Shashi Sharma is a retired Professor of Statistics. He was born and raised in India and now divides his time between Toronto, Ontario and Hilton Head.

TA School Where Flowers Grow Over the past few years, the exterior of Hilton Head high school has been transformed into a beautiful garden. Using discarded and donated plants, Master Gardener George Westerfield has established a number of gardens around the school. They have then been entrusted to the care of the students as part of their curriculum.

Following the class, a tour of the gardens will be scheduled for those wishing to learn more.

George Westerfield has been a Master Gardener here in South Carolina for many years and was recently recognized by the Hilton Head Island government as an “Honored Islander” for his contributions.

Thursdays & Fridays TU nderstanding Alzheimer's and Dementia February 10, 1:30 to 3:30 PM: Deanna Wright will describe the ten warning signs of Alzheimer's and other dementias that cause memory, thinking, and behavior changes which interfere with daily life. Learn what symptoms to look for in yourself and others, the benefit of early detection and diagnosis, and more.

February 11, 10 AM to 12 Noon: Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.

Join Melissa Chambers to learn about the impact of Alzheimer's, the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, stages and risk factors, current research and treatments available for some symptoms, and Alzheimer's Association resources.

Deana Wright and Melissa Chambers are both Certified Dementia Practitioners, Alzheimer's Association community educators, and senior living advisors who specialize in helping families find senior living options They each have twenty-five years of experience in the senior living industry.

TT he Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point. Union Maj. Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, halting Lee's invasion of the North.

Learn how Robert E. Lee, perhaps the best tactician of the Civil War, blundered into ordering the infamous disaster of Pickett’s charge.

Dave Desjardins, is a retired research scientist, and Civil War buff. He lives approximately halfway between Antietam and Gettysburg and had the second largest battle of the Civil War (north of the Mason Dixon line) occur in his backyard!

February 18: The Pink Panther — 1963: The bumbling Inspector Clouseau (Sellers) travels to Rome to catch a notorious jewel thief known as "The Phantom" before he conducts his most daring heist yet, a princess' priceless diamond. With David Niven, Herbert Lom, and Capucine.

A Blake Edwards film.

February 25: Dr. Strangelove or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb — 1964: An insane general triggers a path to nuclear holocaust that a War Room full of politicians and generals frantically try to stop. Sellers plays three roles, including Dr. Strangelove. With George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden. A Stanley Kubrick film.

March 4: Being There — 1979: A simpleminded, sheltered gardener (Sellers) becomes an unlikely trusted advisor to a powerful businessman and insider in Washington politics.

With Shirley MacClain and Melvin Douglas. This was Peter Sellers next to last film.

Saturdays TW riting Fiction from History and The Indigo Girl The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family's three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, are rising. Slaves are becoming restless.

This is the plot of Natasha Boyd’s novel set against the background of actual historical events.

In this session on writing fiction from history, Natasha will focus on identifying stories worth telling, the anatomy of the story, how to fit true time into fiction time, how to research, how to deal with anachronisms, and how to recreate the authentic voice and setting of the time period.
