Happy New Year!

We at Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island send you cheers for a fresh start to the New Year. I know it is hard to believe that 2025 has flown by so fast, but now we can celebrate and focus on new beginnings.

As we begin the winter/spring term of our 21st. year, we have continued to provide outstanding educational and entertaining programs. None of this could have been possible if it had not been for the dedication of our LLHHI staff, teachers, and presenters, the availability of our excellent venues and, most importantly, Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island members.

As you review the catalog, I am sure you will find several courses designed to meet your academic interests and intellectual curiosity.

We will be presenting Bob Fosse: Celebration of a Legend, Low Country Water Birds and Conservation, The American Revolution in Our National Park System, Watercolor: Painting Pet Portraits, Greek Myths and our Solar System. Oh yes, how about Hilton Head Ghosts from the Revolutionary Period! Of course, that was just a sample of what we are offering.

Mondays T Haiku - Waiting for Spring, Dear Friends and Family We will talk about the winter climate here on the island and in distant places; Camellia blossoms, migratory and resident birds, ocean tides, the moon and the sun.

Combining the scenery with your thoughts, memories, and hope, we will write small three-line poems on postcards.

Miho Kinnas has a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry. Her work has appeared in various anthologies including Best American Poetry and is the author of three books of her poetry. She is a member of American Haiku Society.

T The Legacy of Mitchelville and What's Next for

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park The class will be led on a tour of the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park grounds. This tour will include the history of the community, an explanation of current capital projects, and insights into future development on the park site.

Mondays T Enhance Your Coffee Experience!

This educational and entertaining class will start with a short discussion of coffee bean characteristics followed by a "tour" of a plantation and the processes which turn the green bean into your morning cup. This segment wraps up with the importation of coffee to the U.S and elsewhere.

The second segment delves into several key global, regional, and country-specific factors that influence quality, availability, and price.

The best is saved for last. Class members will sample two different coffee beans and explore the nuances that differentiate them. We'll evaluate the best methods for making your morning “cup of joe".

Don't be late! Class will start with a great coffee freshly roasted and ground just for the class.

James Wilkins fascination with coffee goes back thirty years. He started home roasting in 1995. In 2018 he started a coffee coop that provides great coffee to friends in Hilton Head, Chicago, and Lexington Kentucky.

T The American Revolution in our National Park System Over 40 of our 433 National Park Service sites have a direct connection to the American Revolution. We explore the sites that tell the revolutionary story, colonial events that preceded it, moments that changed its course, and battles that decided the outcome.

David Kroese has visited all 433 National Park Service sites. Over the past decade, he has logged 1,600 site visits and over 6,000 trail miles exploring NPS units across the country.

Mondays T Bluffton History Bluffton SC was originally a Native American settlement before European colonists arrived in the early 17 hundreds. Positioned on a bluff overlooking the May River, it became a popular summer retreat for wealthy planters from nearby rice and cotton plantations. Incorporated in 1852, Bluffton was a center of secessionist sentiment before the Civil War. In 1863, much of the town was burned by Union forces. It remained a quiet fishing and farming community until the late 20th century, when rapid development began. Today, Bluffton blends historic charm with modern growth, serving as a gateway to Hilton Head Island.

Join Michael Reynolds for a survey of the history of what is today one of the fastest growing communities in our state.

Michael Reynolds is a long-time history buff whose family has called Beaufort County home since 1792.

T Modern Weapons of War: Some Myths and Realities Recent military conflicts have featured the use of drones, battlefield robots, "over the horizon" targeting, "non-lethal" weapons, and chemical agents. In addition, several countries claim to have developed "hypersonic missiles". This course will describe some of these weapons and present some myths and truths about their development and use. Part of the presentation will involve audience participation to consider reasons to use, or not to use, some of these new weapons.

John Gilbert has several decades of experience dealing with nuclear weapons from an operational and intelligence perspective. This includes inspection of Russian launch and support facilities and the training of nuclear inspectors from U.S. and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Tuesdays T Estate Planning and Personal Investing February 3: Alisa McCray will discuss estate planning and probate laws in South Carolina. This will include documents everyone should have in place, how to most effectively transfer assets at death, and practical considerations to ensure an easy transition for your family.

February 10: Janet Williams will offer investment advice for these uncertain times.

She will discuss the current state of the stock and bond markets and suggest strategies for managing risk and optimizing investment resources. Even seasoned investors will learn something.

Alisa McCoy is a local attorney with 18 years of experience in estate planning.

Janet Williams has been a financial advisor for over 20 years. She is currently First Vice President of Wells Fargo Advisors.

T Gardening in the Lowcountry Gardening in the Lowcountry of South Carolina can be immensely rewarding. You can grow a wide variety of plants year round thanks to our mild winters and a long growing season. But it comes with a distinctive set of climate, soil, pest, and seasonal challenges. This course is designed to whet your appetite to try your hand at capitalizing on the Lowcountry’s unique gardening opportunities, including container gardening.

Tuesdays T Hilton Head Ghosts from the Revolutionary Period Historical interpreters Diane Larsen and Larry Stine love to tell ghost stories about Island residents who lived during the Revolutionary War period.

Hear about Lydia Page Devant who was married to James Devant in 1769. He was one of the largest landowners on Hilton Head. Lydia was fond of telling ghostly stories of family members on Daufuskie that haunted both islands.

Then there was Captain Jack Stoney, sea captain from Ireland. He brought his family to Hilton Head Island and became one of the island’s wealthiest and most colorful characters. He built the Stoney Baynard Plantation. Learn about Captain Stoney’s fatal accident while hunting with Squire Pope. Supposedly, Stoney’s spirit still walks near Zion chapel.

Diane Larson and Larry Stine are instructors for the Heritage Library.

T How Safe Are Our Drugs?

Join Dr. Jerri Perkins for a conversation that could change how you see drug safety!

What makes a drug safe? How do regulatory decisions shape the treatments we rely on?

These questions aren't just theoretical, they’re personal. She will be sharing her journey through decades of clinical research studies and FDA oversight—from medical device failures that threatened people’s sight, to the Toxic Shock crisis, to the AIDS epidemic that redefined how FDA evaluated life-saving treatments.

This talk isn’t about dry policies; it’s about the real stories behind the decisions that protect public health. If you’ve ever wondered what happens before a medication reaches your hands or how crises have shaped regulation, this is for you.

Dr. Jerri Barden Perkins is a former staff expert and medical advisor to the Office of the FDA Commissioner, an Acting FDA Division Director, and a TV spokesperson for the FDA. Tuesdays T Watercolor: Painting Pet Portraits Learn basic methods and techniques in watercolor to capture “the look" of your pet.

Alex will take you step-by-step on how to transfer the photographed image to the watercolor page, followed by watercolor techniques for fur/hair/feathers and eyes.

Each class starts with a demonstration tailored to the day's lesson. Over the 4-week course, Alex will demonstrate how to get a likeness of your subject in a loose, simplified manner using various watercolor brush and surface methods. Color mixing to obtain the desired colors is an integral part of this course.

Bring your own reference photograph to paint from along with your watercolor painting supplies. Here’s what you will need for this class: Watercolor paints in at least the following colors: If you already have paints, Cadmium Red (or other primary red) bring what you have.

If buying paints for the Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt (or other primary blue) Cadmium Yellow or Lemon Yellow (or other primary yellow) first time, there are some good artist sets that Sap Green (or green of your choice) include these colors.

Burnt Sienna Watercolor palette: or large white plate for mixing. A folding travel palette is a good option. An inexpensive plastic folding palette is available for $5-$6 on most art supply websites such as dickblick.com, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or CheapJoes.com.

Just type the words, “folding watercolor palette” in the search bar on the website.

Watercolor paper: size of your choice. (10” x 14” or smaller is good.) Staples has good watercolor pads at a reasonable price.

Two good quality watercolor brushes: A size #8 or larger round brush and a ½ inch or ¾ inch flat brush is all that you need. (Bring what you have, and we will go from there.)

Pencil, ink pen (ball point or fine Sharpie) and soft eraser Wide mouth container for water: An empty cottage cheese, yogurt, or other container is perfect.

Tuesdays T Teddy Roosevelt: One of the Greatest American

Presidents?

There is no doubt Teddy Roosevelt was a consequential American President. However, does he really deserve a place on Mount Rushmore beside Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln? This class will attempt to provide an answer.

Roosevelt was active in New York politics, becoming Governor in 1898. He cemented his image as a cowboy soldier as leader of the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War. In 1900 he was elected Vice President.

He became president in 1901, after the assassination of President William McKinley, who was only six months into his second term.

Roosevelt’s work in creating the Panama Canal, busting monopolies, and conserving valuable public lands set a successful tone for the United States at the turn of the 20th century. During his speeches he exercised plain, ordinary virtues, which called on all good citizens to possess common sense, honesty, courage, and energy.

Often crossing party lines to get things done, Roosevelt injected himself directly into foreign policy and domestic issues. His foreign policy became known as, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

In 2011 Dan Regenold founded EmpowerUAmerica.org, a free university offered in the Greater Cincinnati area with the goal of empowering citizens. Dan has recently concentrated his efforts on improving our Public Education system.

Declutter, Organize, and Quickly Find Your Photos This is a repeat of last fall semester’s class, but this time for Android users only!

Do you struggle to find that photo you are looking for? Do you worry that all your photos are not in one place or backed up in the event something happens?

Our devices are filled with countless photos capturing precious memories and moments.

However, managing these digital collections can be overwhelming. This seminar will guide you through the process of transforming your photo chaos into a streamlined, enjoyable, and productive experience.

You will get quick tips that you can implement now to be able to find that special photo every time. Find and remove duplicates as well as all the unwanted photos for good, clearing space on your camera for the important ones.

Wednesdays T Current Events For over a decade Hilton Head lifelong learners have come together to discuss the issues of the day—locally, nationally, and around the world. We seldom solve anything, but the conversation is always spirited and informative.

A year into the second Trump administration and there is no shortage of topics for discussion. Let’s hear what you think about immigration, tariffs, violence in our inner cities, political violence, the state of our public schools, and much more.

As always, your moderators will select the topics for the first session. Thereafter, participants will help decide what we will discuss. Remember, all points of view are welcome and all will be respected.

Wednesdays T FDR: ''The Indispensable Man?'' Whenever lists are compiled of American presidents in order of greatness, Franklin Delano Roosevelt invariably makes it to the top tier with Washington and Lincoln.

Even among historians who are critical, there are few who would deny the enormous impact he had on the course of American history domestically and in foreign policy. First elected in 1932, he would be reelected an unprecedented three more times, each in record landslides. As President he would face the greatest economic downturn in American history and a global war. In four classes we will examine his leadership in facing these challenges and their consequences that forever changed the nature of the presidency and the nation.

March 4: “Wall Street Lays an Egg” The stock market crash in 1929 changed everything. Suddenly banks were failing and unemployment rising dramatically.

Hoover’s response was cautious and rooted in traditional economic beliefs, emphasizing voluntary initiative and limited federal involvement. As the depression deepened, his refusal to provide direct aid and his perceived indifference led to widespread public frustration and paved the way for FDR’s landslide victory in1932.

March 11: ''The New Deal'' How new was the New Deal? What programs were initiated by the Roosevelt Administration that committed the Federal government to guaranteeing the economic well-being of the American people? How successful was it in putting America back to work or was it the outbreak of World War II that accomplished that elusive goal.

March 18: ''The Arsenal of Democracy'' How did FDR react to Axis aggression in both Europe and Asia? Did his actions prevent a victory for fascism or were they merely diversion from his failed New Deal policies. Did FDR's actions not only violate the Neutrality Acts and the will of the American people who were opposed to US involvement in another world war or were they the prescient actions of a leader who saw a global menace the American people failed to recognize?

March 25: "A Day of Infamy" What factors led up to America's participation in World War II and what contributions did America make toward Allied victory? Did FDR mislead the voting public in 1940 when he promised not to send American boys to die in foreign wars even as he provoked Germany by supporting Britain and France and expanding our naval presence in the Pacific.

Joe Melita taught high school history for thirty-four years. This included numerous Advanced Placement courses in American and European history. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Queens College in New York City.

Thursdays T Equal Protection and Due Process…Do We Have Them

and, if so, How Do We Preserve Them?

This series will explore the historical roots of these concepts and their enshrinement in the 5th and 14th amendments to our Constitution. We will explore how have these intertwined constitutional provisions and protections changed American culture and society including Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Sex, Disability, Parental Rights, Romantic Orientation, and Affirmative Action.

February 5: How We Got Here—This class will review the pathway to the 14th Amendment and transformative nature of Equal Protection, how it became the foundation of modern Civil Rights jurisprudence, and the precedent to private and personal liberties. Is SCOTUS up to the challenge of protecting the resilience of public vs. private interests?

February 12: Threats and Opportunities—Are social media platforms and AI subject to Equal Protection? Does SCOTUS and the federal courts permit intentional discrimination, and the negative impact of provocateurs and “fake news”? Should American courts take notice of the European Union’s Digital Services Act and the AI Act with its emphasis on transparency and risk mitigation?

February 19: The Due Process Clause and the States—The 14th Amendment guarantees certain rights federally. However, over time, the Due Process Clause has been the bridge to apply the Bill of Rights to the States, extending core constitutional rights as a national safeguard for civil liberties. Can this dynamic tool for defining liberties be protected from SCOTUS? February 26: The Role of the Courts—Does judicial review create a tension under the 5th and 14th Amendments that overrides democratically enacted laws to protect or reject individual rights? Should unelected judges reject democratic majorities?

Should Congress help define rights under Due Process when judicial review undermines protection of unenumerated rights or reinterpret existing ones?

Eliott Good has 45 years of experience as a securities trial lawyer representing the industry's largest financial services companies and regulatory compliance agencies.

He currently serves as a federal securities arbitration judge.

Thursdays T Greek Myths and our Solar System We will start with a look at our solar system and the origin of the planet names. (Who was Uranus?) We will also construct a "pocket solar system" to better appreciate the spacing of the planets.

Next, we will delve into the Greek and Roman myths associated with the planets and our Milky Way galaxy; for example, the story of Andromeda, the "chained maiden".

Marie McClune has worked as a geologist, an environmental educator, and high school science teacher. She is currently a docent at The Coastal Discovery Museum.

T Lowcountry Water Birds and Local Conservation Efforts In the first part of this class you will learn about the amazing variety of Lowcountry water birds and provide some helpful tips to identify them.

Kay Grinnell will then turn to the problem of our dramatically declining bird populations across North America and what our local Hilton Head Audubon is doing to address bird conservation.

Thursdays T Where on Earth is the U.S.? Are we in the Top Ten? How does the U.S. compare with other nations in meeting the challenges that exist in 2025? This class will examine 24 topics including: GDP, wages, taxes, trade balance, tariffs, environment, energy, education, health care, climate change, immigration, safety, prosperity, happiness, to name a few. We will use the top ten format which provides a quick snapshot of the U.S. rank relative to other nations. Our sources are international surveys by highly credible, impartial international organizations.

Doug Stowell is a consumer and political polling veteran in both U.S. and EU Markets.

His career includes Market Research Director for the Xerox Corp., U.S. Clients Director for the U.K. polling firm NOP, Ltd in London, and Senior Polling Executive for Wirthlin Worldwide in Washington, D.C. He launched Market Resource Associates in 2008 and conducts opinion polls on U.S. and global issues.

T Backyard BioBlitz* What’s that bird? Eek, a snake! Ooh, a pretty butterfly! The presentation will familiarize you and make you comfortable with the native flora and fauna you may encounter during your daily backyard adventures. This program is meant to make you feel comfortable living with wildlife and explain why these critters are so important to the health of our ecosystem and community. Chris Kehrer will be accompanied by some familiar and not so familiar animals. *A BioBlitz is an event where scientists, naturalists, and community members work together to find and identify as many species as possible in a specific area within a short period of time, usually 24 hours.

Fridays T A Sampler of Americana Movies All four movies presented this semester represent aspects of American life and culture in different locales and time periods.

February 6: Meek’s Cutoff (2010) 104 minutes: Settlers traveling through the Oregon desert in 1845 find themselves stranded in harsh conditions. Themes: Adventure, Drama, Survival, Thriller.

February 13: Friendly Persuasion (1956) 137 minutes: The pacifist attitude of a Quaker family is tested during the American Civil War. Themes: Drama, Family, Romance, War February 20: Pleasantville (1998) 124 minutes: Two teenage siblings find themselves transported to a 1950’s sitcom where their influence begins to profoundly change their colorless, complacent world. Themes: Comedy, Drama, Fairy Tale, Satire February 27: Gran Torino (2008) 116 minutes: After a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem the boy and himself. Themes: Dark Comedy, Drama, Psychological Roz and Steve Shaw have been teaching film courses for the OLLI-RU program at Rutgers University since 2003.

Fridays T Pros and Cons of Solar and Wind Energy We’ll explore how these sources can reduce carbon emissions and diversify energy supply, while also examining their challenges, such as high land use, intermittent output, limited storage capacity, and higher energy consumption in building and maintaining the systems themselves. Drawing on real-world examples from the U.S. and abroad, we’ll compare benefits like sustainability and innovation with drawbacks like rising costs and reliability concerns. By the end, you’ll have a clear, balanced understanding of where solar and wind fit in today’s energy mix and what their expansion means for the future of electricity.

Henrik de Gyor is an author and podcaster who has previously lectured on new technology for LLHHI and OLLI. He will be joined by Dick Storm, an advocate and consultant for conventional power generation.

T Telling Stories with Smart Phones Want to do more than just take pictures and video? This class will show you how to tell compelling stories about the moments that matter using your smartphone.

In this immersive workshop, you’ll: • Learn the art of visual storytelling; how to capture moments that convey emotion, narrative, and atmosphere.

• Discover composition and framing techniques that make your photos speak louder than words.

• Edit your photos to perfection with simple tools and apps.

• Learn how to curate a photo series to tell an engaging story Denise Prichard has been a producer and writer for the National Geographic Channel, the Smithsonian and Discovery Networks and HGTV. She created the Sciencetelling Bootcamp™ for National Geographic, a multi-day workshop teaching the key components of smartphone storytelling.

Fridays T Bob Fosse: Celebration of a Legend We will begin with highlights of Bob Fosse's life and work as a choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker. He is arguably the most influential figure in the field of 20th century jazz dance.

Hilton Head Dance Theatre artists will then present examples of Fosse's choreographic style and how it influenced dancers over the years with a staging and rehearsal of a Fosse piece.

Attendees will receive two free tickets to the Terpsichore matinee performance on Sunday, March 16 at 2:30 PM. Your presenters are Michelle Audet, the New York City Ballet’s founding Director of Education; John Carlyle, co-founder and Artistic Director of the Hilton Head Dance Theater; and Katie Girardi and Jamal Edwards, both American Ballet Theater Master Teachers.
