FALL 2023

The Calendar and Registration Page are available online as separate files for easy printing.

Dear Lifelong Learners,

As the hot summer months begin to wane and we look forward to cooler weather, Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island is excited to present our exciting fall line-up of classes. For nature lovers, history buffs, lovers of ballet and dance... we’ve got something for you. There’s a Supreme Court class, one focused on the Electoral College, and one exploring the recent banking crisis. That’s just a sampling of your fall term. I hope you will take some time to choose the ones that most fit your interests.

Because we have had such great success with enrollments during the last two semesters, we have decided to lower the cost of the semester once again to only $50. As always, this amount allows you to take as many classes as you wish!

Last year, LLHHI and Art League Academy of Hilton Head worked in collaboration to present a wonderful exhibit which included some of our members’ artwork. One success naturally leads to another and there will be an encore art exhibition this fall. This will be free and open to the public from Monday, October 16 through to Wednesday, October 25. A wine and cheese reception for the artists will be held at Art League Academy on Cordillo Parkway, Wednesday, October 18 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. You are cordially invited.

The entire LLHHI Board and Curriculum Committee are looking forward to a new academic year of entertaining and educational classes. We hope you are too.

My very best to you,

T Originalism: The Supreme Court and the Constitution

In recent years, as the Supreme Court has become more conservative, the doctrine of originalism (hewing to the original meaning of the Framers) has taken on new importance in its decision making. This class will examine the history of originalism; the politicization of the originalist methodology; and its in uence on major issues of our times. Attendees, as “Justices of the Supreme Court of Hilton Head,” will be free to weigh in with their opinions.

October 9: The History — Originalism is a theory of constitutional interpretation, which has been applied by the current Supreme Court in several critical decisions. We will explore the roots of this methodology and the contributions to the theory’s development by two prominent pioneers of originalism, Judge Bork and Justice Scalia. We will then examine the “politicization” of the methodology.

October 16: School Desegregation — We will discuss the di culty that originalists have in justifying the result in Brown v. Board of Education and the understanding of the drafters of the equal protection clause. We will then discuss what most people do not appreciate about the State of South Carolina’s contribution to the Brown decision in the case of Briggs v. Elliot and attempt to clarify precisely what Chief Justice Warren’s opinion said.

October 23: Gun Rights — We will explore the majority originalist opinion delivered by Justice Scalia in the Heller case deciding the Second Amendment provides an individual the right to possess a gun in his home and the minority originalist opinion o ered by Justice Stevens coming to the opposite conclusion.

October 30: Abortion — We will analyze the originalist foundation for Justice Alito’s opinion in Dobbs overturning Roe v. Wade; speci cally, his history of selected states abortion statutes and the meaning of the 14th Amendment. We will also explore if there is an originalist foundation for Judge Thomas’ concurring opinion that the Court should also reverse its decision which provided for same sex marriages.

Charlie Sanders is one of our most popular presenters. He probably enjoys giving the course slightly more than the many "Justices" attending.

T Why Banks Fail

If you have a bank account, which most of us do, hearing about bank failures recently has not been fun and, to many, quite unsettling. Keeping your money in a bank is supposed to be boring and safe and should not require you to run to the medicine cabinet for an aspirin every time you turn on the business news.

This presentation, will discuss why banks fail, the leading causes of today’s bank failures, and some of the causes of bank failures of the past.

The presentation will introduce some concepts of sound banking practices, that, once violated, can cause even the largest banks to fail. These concepts will be nontechnical and easy to understand. A dose of the history of bank failures in the U.S. will be thrown in for good measure.

October 18: How did slavery contribute to secession and civil war and why did the spirit of compromise fail to avert that tragic con ict?

October 25: How did the Lincoln Administration ght and win the Civil War thereby restoring the Union?

November1: How did the Civil War and the so-called Civil War Constitutional Amendments alter the status of African Americans?

T The Battle of Tulifinney: Defense of the Charleston to Savannah Railroad

In the closing days of the Civil War, cadets from the Citadel (then The Military College of South Carolina) were called upon to defend the Charleston to Savannah railroad, known as the “vital rails.”

In early December 1864, the situation became dire for the Confederate forces of General Hardee as Sherman approached Savannah. Their only escape was via the railroad. The Citadel cadets joined the depleted confederate forces to prevent the capture of the railroad at a place known as Tuli nny Creek just twenty miles north of Beaufort. They defeated the U.S. Marines from the garrison at Hilton Head and escaped to ght another day.

T What Civil War Are We Talking About? Southern Honor and the Myth of the Lost Cause

In the aftermath of a brutal Civil War, many southerners justi ed their sacri ce by creating a romanticized version of the War. Prominent people like South Carolina’s Wade Hampton and LaSalle Corbell Pickett, widow of the famed Confederate General, promoted a version of the War that justi ed the South’s secession, casting doubt on the real causes of the con ict.

This presentation explores this 19th century manifestation of “fake news” and its lasting consequences on the national memory and understanding of the Civil War.

Ron Roth was a historian for the Gettysburg National Military Park, and a Licensed Battle eld Guide at Gettysburg. He is the author of the acclaimed book The Civil War in the South Carolina Lowcountry. As an update to last year’s session, this session will review popular and some of the newest methods these cyber criminals aim at individuals like us as well as the high pro le schemes that have exposed the soft under-belly of security at our largest multi-national rms and governments.

T Four Vietnam War Movies

Not all Vietnam War movies are the same. The war provides the background, and the storyteller provides the tale, each as unique as human DNA or ngerprints. Vietnam veterans when rst encountering another veteran of the war will ask “When were you there? Who did you serve with?“ Once the context is established the story unfolds. Mike McDonell has selected four lms each of which tells a unique story about “our war”.

October 13: The Sapphires (2013) A musical comedy-drama about four aboriginal Australian women who form an R&B singing group, decide to leave it all behind and head for Vietnam in 1968 to entertain the troops.

October 27: Jacob’s Ladder (1990) A psychological horror lm in which Tim Robbins stars as a combat veteran whose experiences before and during Vietnam result in strange visions and hallucinations that continue to haunt him. He searches for the truth . . . and nds it.

November 3: 84 Charlie MoPic (1989) A mock documentary that depicts a long-range reconnaissance patrol deep inside enemy territory. It is as real as it gets. And it was all shot outside Los Angeles.

November 10: Da 5 Bloods (2020) A war drama directed by Spike Lee and the last lm in which Chadwick Boseman (The Black Panther) starred. Four aging Vietnam veterans return in search of the remains of their fallen leader and the treasure they buried with him.

Mike McDonell is a Vietnam veteran and has been showing movies for LLLHHI for many years. He has been back to Vietnam four times and has a great a ection for the country and its people.
