Your LLHHI Curriculum Committee has worked hard to put together a wonderful selection of classes for the upcoming semester which will begin on October 10. I’ve had many people ask me where we get such interesting classes and wonderful presenters. The answer, YOU! After each class, attendees are sent an evaluation form with a space for suggestions for future classes and presenters. Thanks to the responses we have reached out and been able to create many programs which educate and entertain. As you peruse this online catalog you will note that we have included classes which focus on local issues, nature, presentations of international importance, art and music along with some very popular repeat programs. Please note that you can register on-line or simply print the registration form and mail it to us to ensure your place in your favorite classes. Whichever way you choose, we will be happy to welcome you to our LLHHI fall term. My very best to you, Kristen Sakati, President, Lifelong learning of Hilton Head Island

October 24: This session opens with a SURPRISE you won't want to miss! Then we will discuss the evolution of the Violence Against Women Act, which was originally adopted in 1994, and the Supreme Court decision in 2000 which materially curtailed the impact of that legislation.

October 31: We will end this series with the Courts’ momentous decision reversing precedent and disregarding stare decisis in overturning Roe v. Wade and, in the area of religious freedom, the meaning of the free exercise clause of the 14th Amendment.

Charlie Sanders has delighted LLHHI members for over a decade with his insightful and entertaining classes on the Supreme Court

Four Sessions: 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Mondays TidePointe (Second right off Point Comfort Road.)(Beach City Road)

2 Mondays Mondays T Women and the United States Constitution –Women’s Struggle for Equal Rights

October 17: We will explore the Supreme Court rulings which provided protection from state laws which barred women from employment of their choosing and interfered with progressive legislation which provided women protection from working in unbearable conditions. Focus will be on the Constitutional constraints Justices believed applicable at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. We will briefly identify some of the cases in which RBG was involved, which challenged those constraints and the landmark decision she authored concerning the Virginia Military Academy.

October 10: We will focus on the treatment of women under common law in colonial America and adopted by most states in legislative form. These laws prevented married women from earning income in their own name, serving on juries, and denied them the right to vote. We will explore the adoption of the 19th Amendment, the major arguments of those who opposed its adoption, and the current viability of those arguments.

Mondays Mondays 3

T China's Human Rights Abuses of the Uyghur People (Pronounced Wee-grr) Since 2016, the Chinese communist party has intensified a regime of technologically driven mass surveillance, internment, indoctrination, family separation, birth suppression, and forced labor against the Uyghur people of the provinces and municipalities of eastern China.

One Session: 10 AM to 12 Noon, Monday, October 17

One Session: 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Monday, November 7

TidePointe (Second right off Point Comfort Road.)

Cathy Sakas holds a B.S. in Biology and a Master of Science in Education/ Communication. She wrote and hosted two nature series for Georgia Public Broadcasting called "Coastal Naturalist” and is the Founding President of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and Co-Founder of Ocean Exchange.

T Rivers to Reefs: Connecting Land to Sea

The Seabrook (Off Pope Avenue.)

The goal of this presentation is to raise awareness of the plight of the Uyghurs. You will also learn how the U.S. government has responded to increased demands for assistance to the Uyghurs through sanctions, and how China reacts to criticism of what it insists is purely a domestic issue. Ben Kinnas is an eighteen-year resident of China with a background of managing large U.S. banks in both Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Added to this is the incredible system of spectacular offshore reefs. Cathy Sakas connects all the pieces in an entertaining, informative presentation using underwater video footage and PowerPoint slides.

The southeastern coast is basically the dust trail of the North American tectonic plate with a landscape as flat as a pancake. Warm, slow flowing black water rivers drain its vast expanse, and the relatively low elevation allows for the highest percentage of salt marsh to coastline anywhere in the world.

October 11: The Munich ConferenceOn September 29, 1938 Neville Chamberlain succumbed to Hitler’s demand that Germany be allowed to occupy the Sudetenland, then a part of Czechoslovakia. Was this a legitimate (albeit naive) desire for peace or craven capitulation to aggression?

This course will discuss four pivotal decisions affecting history's bloodiest conflict and ask whether were they were effective in achieving their goals or were there viable alternatives.

4 Tuesdays Tuesdays T Strategic Decisions of World War II

October 18: Operation Barbarossa - This was the code name for the German invasion of Russia launched on June 22, 1941. Why did Hitler order an attack on the Soviet Union and thereby engage Germany in the ''two front war'' he had hitherto so scrupulously avoided?

November 1: The U.S. Strategic U.S. Bombing Offensive - Millions of tons of ordinance were dropped on industrial and civilian targets by our bombers, culminating in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. How did this effort contribute to the Allied victory and were there long-term consequences?

Four Sessions: 10 AM to 12 Noon, Tuesdays TidePointe (Second right off Point Comfort Road.)

Joe Melita is a retired high school history teacher with thirty-four years of experience. He taught numerous college level (Advanced Placement) courses in both American and European History, He holds a Bachelors and Master’s degree from Queens College in New York City.

October 25: The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor - Why did Japan decide to make war on the United States? Why were we so obviously unprepared? Could the attack have been avoided?

The Seabrook (Off Pope Avenue.)

Hilton Head has long had a vision for our island to be recognized as “best-in-class for parks and recreation.” Since we first purchased five acres in 1988 for Coligny Beach Park, the town has worked towards making this vision a reality. Today, the Town now has over five hundred acres of dedicated parks open to the public. With the opening of Shelter Cove Community Park in 2015 and Lowcountry Celebration Park in 2020, a new era of park planning and service for our Island community was born. Continued Town Council support and investment in this vision is needed for building new parks and rebuilding our aging ones.

This class will be presented by Jennifer Ray, the Town’s Capital Program Manager, and Taylor Ladd, a Capital Program Project Manager. Both recently worked closely with the Island community on a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan and Our Plan, the Town’s twenty-year comprehensive plan adopted in 2020.

T Reflecting Our Best: Hilton Head Island Parks

In this class, you will learn the history of parks planning on the Island, how the Town’s funding and planning for parks through the Capital Improvement Program works, and how the community is included in the planning process. You will also get a glimpse of the town’s current park projects and have an opportunity to speak with town staff about our Island parks.

9Thursdays Thursdays

One Session: 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Thursday, October 20

The Seabrook (Off Pope Avenue.)

Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings provides the atmosphere and musical impetus for romance, drama, passion, and mystery. Come, let’s watch, discuss, and experience together the timeless and exquisite beauty of the masterpiece that transformed 20th century American ballet and the woman artists who danced it. Jack Wilfore is a long-time volunteer and past president of the Hilton Head Island Computer Club. Over the years he has made many presentations for LLHHI.

Of all of choreographer George Balanchine’s masterworks, Serenade provides as close to a spiritual experience as can be found in ballet. Created in 1934 for students at his new School of American Ballet to teach stage technique and performance, it has become one of the most beloved ballets in the world today. From the moment the curtain rises on the iconic image of seventeen women standing still and serene in the moonlight to the last glimpse of their pointe shoes as the curtain falls, Serenade takes a gentle hold on our emotions and imagination.

13Fridays Fridays

T Music! Music! Music! Music! Four Films About Music and the Musicians Who Created It Music is as common as the air we breathe and, some may argue, just as vital. It is more than an arrangement of sounds having melody, rhythm, and harmony. It is a mixture of science and art that literally speaks to us.

October 14: Amadeus (1984) Directed by Milos Forman and the winner of eight Academy Awards, this is a visual and musical tour de force of the life and music of 18th century wunderkind Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Starring Tom Hulce, F. Murray Abraham and Elizabeth Berridge.

October 21: Bird (1988) Clint Eastwood reveals yet another aspect of his many talents . . . jazz connoisseur. Winner of the 1988 Academy Award for Best Sound, Bird stars Forrest Whitaker as Charlie “Bird” Parker, pioneering jazz great.

Four Sessions: 1:30 to 4:00 PM, Fridays The Seabrook (Off Pope Avenue.)

Join Mike McDonell in an exploration of four films dedicated to music and musicians who created the sounds that added so much to our lives.

October 28: Walk the Line (2005) Directed by James Mangold, this bio-pic of country music stars Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash is impressive both for the acting and the music performed by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Joaquin was nominated for Best Actor; Reese won Best Actress.

Mike McDonell’s interest in films began in 1948 at the age of four. While sitting between his mother and grandmother in a theatre in Long Beach, California, he first heard the words, “Toot, toot, tootsie don’t cry,” and saw the darkened face and banjo eyes of Eddie Cantor on the screen before him. The film was The Jazz Singer (1927), the first “talkie” and the end of the silent era of film. He has been hooked ever since.

November 4: This is Spinal Tap (1984) Rob Reiner not only directs this “rockumentary” but also has an acting credit for what many call the funniest movie ever made about rock music and the musicians who make the sound called rock.

TidePointe (Second right off Point Comfort Road.)

Lila Arnold, founder of Lowcountry Raptors, will present various birds of prey on the glove including owls, hawks, and falcons. We all hear and read how seemingly easy it is for cyber-criminals hiding in the digital cloud to swoop in and steal a person’s identity, money, or take control of your computer. We listen to these stories and wonder how people could be fooled so easily or thieves know so much.
