Dear Lifelong Learners,

Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island will soon begin its 14th year as the Island’s premier adult learning program. Our mission was based on the premise that the desire for knowledge is not bound by age but is enhanced through life experiences and the sharing of ideas. We have never been more assured of this than now. As we move forward however, we must also cope with the sadness of loss.

Judie Van Cleave, the president of LLHHI for 10 years, passed away earlier this year. It was her enerygy, determination, and belief in our mission that LLHHI has enjoyed the successes and accolades that we do today.

As we embark on our new and exciting 2019 Fall term, it is my hope that the faith and confidence that the LLHHI curriculum committee, board and, most importantly you, our members, have placed in me that I can continue to carry forward the same ideals of the highest quality adult learning programs that Judie envisioned. I will try my best not let her nor you down.

Mondays T Among the Righteous: Lost Stories From the Holocaust's

Long Reach into Arab Lands

This program is based upon a book and DVD by Robert Satloff. He saw, as an historian, that little was known about the Arab role in the Holocaust. Satloff spent two years in Morocco, to investigate the facts and search for Arabs who saved Jews or Arabs who surrendered them to the Nazis. We will look at the larger picture of Jews and Muslims together in the past, present, and future.

Claire Sullivan has a masters degree from Syracuse University in the Cultural Foundations of Education and Educational Planning.

Mondays T Four Supremes — Their Legacies for the Supreme Court and

Constitutional Landmarks

During these four sessions, the Supreme Court of LLHHI will focus on an individual justice, identify how his or her background perhaps influenced the Justice’s legal philosophy, then review one or two of their more prominent opinions. As in the past, the Supreme Court of LLHHI will be invited to either confirm the merits of the justice’s writings, or when appropriate, indicate their failings.

October 7: Sandra Day O'Connor — LADIES FIRST! Lest we forget, the first woman on the Supreme Court was appointed by President Reagan. We will first review her path to the Court and how it influenced her judicial philosophy. We will then turn to her legacy in terms of affirmative action, and address her opinions dealing with gender discrimination, and the differences in her approach from that of Justice Ginsburg’s.

October 14: Antonin Scalia — We will review his landmark opinion confirming Second Amendment rights and the role of “originalism” in structuring that argument. Next we will examine his opinion dealing with freedom of religion and it's connection with Obamacare provisions governing contraception. We will then review some of his more acerbic dissents and his prescient analysis of the evolution of gay rights.

October 21: Ruth Bader Ginsburg — We cannot ignore the legacy of the rockstar RBG any further. We will track her astute strategy in the world of women’s rights and her opinion in the seminal Virginia Military Institute case. We will review some of her more recently issued pointed dissents as the Court has become more conservative. Lastly, given the Justice’s age we will debate the merits of term limits for members of the US Supreme Court.

October 28: Chief Justice John Roberts — We will examine his majority opinion which struck down a critical provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and analyze the appropriate balance between the power of Congress to legislate and that of the Supreme Court. We will then turn to the Chief Justice's majority opinion voiding a local school district’s attempt to integrate a highly segregated residential community. Lastly, we will explore the Justice’s controversial opinion upholding the constitutionality of Obamacare, and explore the political, if not legal, ramifications as to how the next generation will view legacy of the Robert’s court.

Charlie Sanders is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and practiced law in New York. He is one of our most popular presenters.

Mondays T Influences of the Art of L.S. Lowry and Vincent Van Gogh The art of L.S. Lowry is largely unknown in America, but he is perhaps the most famous British artist of the twentieth century. Chris Clayton, a prominent local artist, will discuss meeting Lowry and the influence it had on his work. Chris also had the pleasure of visiting the first Van Gogh exhibition in post-war Manchester, England.

This experience was another major influence in his development that he will share with the class.

Chris Clayton has had multiple exhibitions of his paintings at the Coastal Discovery Museum, the Walter Greer Gallery, and the Society of Bluffton Artists.

T Bottlenose Dolphins of Beaufort County Beaufort County waterways host Atlantic bottlenose dolphins year round. Amber Kuehn will dispel myths and enlighten you so that you can be an ambassador for the Lowcountry dolphins. She will also explain her role with the South Carolina Marine Mammal Stranding Network in our area.

Amber Kuehn is a marine biologist. She currently manages the Sea Turtle Patrol on Hilton Head.

T Driving Miss Norma: Living Fully to the End of Life Driving Miss Norma is a best-selling book about living life fully to the end.

Using the book as a real-life example, this course discusses bucket lists, critical conversations, and decisions for end of life. A great retirement doesn't just happen. You need to plan for it.

Dr. Janet Porter is an adjunct professor at Ohio State University, University of North Carolina, and University of Miami. Janet has taught for years in the Harvard Medical School Palliative Care Leadership Program.

Tuesdays T Rose Hill: Pre-Civil War Plantation House In a colorful Power Point presentation, Iva Roberts Welton tells of her mission to restore Rose Hill’s authentic and beautiful Gothic Revival plantation house to its original state of splendor. She weaves together the lifestyle of the Kirk family and others who lived there while preserving the architectural integrity of one of Beaufort Country’s oldest historic dwellings. It is the story of “mission accomplished” as Rose Hill’s Plantation House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Iva Roberts Welton is founder of the Arts and Cultural Council of Hilton Head Island and has been actively involved in Lowcountry history since 1981. She has served as president and/or on the Boards of the Heritage Library Foundation, the Beaufort County Historical Society, and the Historic Beaufort Foundation Board.

T Stewardship of Our Oceans Oceans are the source of life on earth. They shape our climate, feed the world, and cleanse the air we breathe. They carry ninety percent of global commerce and provide new forms of energy. Today the oceans are confronted with a dizzying array of threats. This class will focus on the future of the oceans and our future as well, which increasingly depends on effective multinational stewardship of the maritime world.

Captain Tom Anderson is an Medical Doctor and Phd. He is now retired from the Navy, and devotes his time to researching, writing, and speaking about the maritime world.

T The Awakening: A Novel by Kate Chopin This classic novel concerning a married woman of means in the deep South during the Victorian Period mirrors some of the issues that women still face in keeping within the bounds of accepted behavior. It is particularly relevant to the more senior among us who were able to see many remnants of that stiff and stifling attitude in our parents' and grandparents' generations, as well as in our own.

This is an interactive seminar. Participants should read as far into the book as possible prior to the first class. It is available in electronic form or in paperback from Amazon.

Jim Kadra has guided LLHHI students through a number of worthy American novels. His relaxed style is designed to elicit broad participation.

Tuesdays T Our Lowcountry Landscape This course will focus on watercolor techniques and methods to achieve dynamic skies, water, and foliage. Each class begins with a demonstration specific to the day's focus. Beginners will be comfortable in this class, and those with more experience will be challenged. Bring your own photos for painting reference.

A list of supplies you will need will be sent to participants well before the first class.

Alexandra Sharma has a Masters in Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary. She is represented locally by the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. T Climate Change: Tomorrow’s Forecast This program will consist of a three-part film and discussion series that will focus on the effects of climate change.

October 29: The first class will feature a series of short environmental films, followed by a discussion session that will address these aspects and the seriousness of what tomorrow may bring.

November 5: Next will be a National Geographic film (set in the future) on the possible adverse effects of climate change. It's rather grim and should generate a lot of discussion.

November 12: We will close with parts of the apocalypse movie, The Day After Tomorrow based on the book, The Coming Global Superstorm. The discussion will address the very delicate balance of our global climate control system and how this film exaggerated the science in order to bring attention to the risk.

Dave DesJardins is a retired research scientist and a certified master gardener in three states.

He has presented many courses on climate change.

T The Essence of Haiku: Part II Haiku, which originated in Japan, is the world's shortest form of poetry. Today, poets around the world write haiku because it contains only seventeen syllables and is adaptable to different languages.

In addition to our continued exploration of life stories in haiku, we will play with expansion and compression of poetry.

Miho Kinnas is the author of two poetry collections. She lectures, conducts workshops, and reads poetry locally, regionally, and internationally. This is her second Haiku class for LLHHI. Two Sessions: 1:30 to 3:30 PM: Tuesday, November 5 and 12 • The Seabrook (Off Pope Ave.) 6 Tuesdays

Wednesdays T Current Events Join our open forum where current events—local, national, and global­­—are discussed in an unstructured setting. Class members are advised of the topics for the first session, and thereafter choose the subjects themselves.

Participants will be expected to do some reading in preparation for each session and to join in the group discussions. The object is to air all sides of an issue. As always, contrarian and controversial points of view are welcome!

Your moderators are: Bruce Lerner, a retired corporate sales and marketing executive and small business owner. He provides a liberal perspective to the discussion. Jim Van Cleave, a thirty-seven-year veteran of Proctor & Gamble in marketing. He presents classic films for LLHHI and is a conservative.

T North Korea's Nuclear Weapon Program: Two Years,

Two Summits, and Beyond

North Korea has had an aggressive nuclear weapon and missile program for a number of years but paused all testing in early 2018. Since then, there have been several developments, including two "summit" meetings. This course will look at recent developments and the outlook for any new ones.

John Gilbert has over forty years of experience in strategic operations, intelligence, and arms control.

He has served as an advisor and instructor for the Defense Department, State Department, Department of Energy, several foreign governments, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Wednesdays T Photography for Cell Phones and Digital Cameras Composition, lighting, exposure, who, what, where to take the picture...all this can be very confusing and discouraging, but need not be. In this class, you will learn the basics of attaining good outcomes for your photography experiences.

You will need to bring your camera to the first class. There will be "homework" assignments and your work critiqued by professional photographer, Victor Pizzolatto.

Victor Pizzolotto was a Korean War combat photographer and later a photography instructor at Coastal Carolina University. A published author, he is an established wedding and portrait photographer.

T Privacy in the Digital Age We all use one or more services like email, Facebook, or LINKEDIN. But did you know their business models rely on quietly collecting and using what most of us consider our private information? In this class we will review the regulations and laws designed to protect such information and their effectiveness. Finally, you will learn steps you can take to balance the convenience of these technologies while protecting your privacy to the extent possible.

Paul Weismantel has thirty-five years of product-management experience in the technology sector, including systems, software, and services.

Thursdays T Your iPhone and You: The Upgraded Edition You have an iPhone, but how well do you know how to use it? This series of classes will build on what we covered last year and add some new topics, such as integrating health features and learning how to be proficient using social media. THESE ARE THE ONLY CLASSES WHERE WE WILL ASK YOU TO TURN YOUR CELLPHONE ON!

October 10: A Refresher of the Basics — This class will walk you through the basic standard features of the iPhone and iOS operating system so you will be able to better understand how to use the everyday functions of your device. You will be able to learn how to integrate key features such as Siri, iCloud, and the App Store with other apps, as well as maximize the newer features of texting, travel, e-mail, and much more.

October 17: An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away — This class embraces the amazing health technology that your iPhone provides to you already pre-loaded, with what’s available via the App Store, as well as integrating with the Apple Watch. We will cover the Apple Watch in its entirety as to how it can help you with everything from help if you fall to everyday fitness and even EKG readings. A healthy you . . . all due to your iPhone–amazing.

October 24: iSocialize with Apps — This class will show you how to use your iPhone to connect with friends and family via social media apps. We will focus on Facebook and Facebook Messenger, but we’ll also be covering Facetime, What’s App, and Viber (great for international communication).

October 31: Twenty Apps you Can't Live Without — Learn about apps for travel, keeping your mind sharp, entertainment on the go, cooking, and more. There are so many apps out there, so we made sure to show you the “must haves.”

Thursdays T Drugs In Society This course addresses drug use in a variety of social contexts, comparative approaches to addressing drug use, and the evolution of drug policy in the United States.

We will trace the origins and consequences of the use and abuse of consciousness-altering substances, as well as the relationship between substance use and violent offenses.

Finally,we will consider how society defines the damage associated with drug use and how social and political considerations shape legislation, policy debates, and drug policy enforcement.

Lisa Holmes is a retired Boston Police Superintendent and a current lecturer at the University of Massachusetts/Harbor Campus.

T The Music of World War II The Swing and Big Band sound helped define a culture and an era when great nations clashed on the battlefield in all corners of the globe. The music and dance of the late 30’s and early 40’s gave men and women an opportunity to forget the bleak woes of war and come together to mingle and “cut a rug” to the tunes of the jazz greats of the time.

This special class will focus on the story of the Great War and The Greatest Generation as told through the music that was written and performed to boost the morale of soldiers in fox holes and their families at home. With dialogue and song, Carole Galli brings to life this wonderful music that made America march.

There is no extra charge for LLHHI members. However, non-member guests must pay $20 at the door. (Cash or check - made out to Junior Jazz Foundation.) All proceeds will go to the Junior Jazz Foundation.

A classically trained vocalist, Carole Galli spent more than thirty years teaching music.

Thursdays T Anarchists and Revolutionaries: Impressionism,

From the 1860s to the 1880s

Impressionism is one of the most influential movements in the history of modern art. It remains one of the most popular genres to this day. Learn what brought about this revolutionary, new way of painting and what obstacles the movement had to overcome to find acceptance. Attendees are encouraged to bring an example of their favorite impressionist work to be discussed by the class.

Gabriele Hoffman has a BA and MA in Art History. She has worked for the New York Metropolitan Museum and the Neue Galerie, a private museum of Austian and German Expressionism. Since coming to the Lowcountry, she has worked for Art League Gallery and the Arts Center for Coastal Carolina.

T The Hobcaw Barony: A South Carolina Historical Treasure The Hobcaw Barony is a privately owned research preserve located on the coast near Georgetown, South Carolina. The Barony’s sixteen thousand acres encompass a rich diversity of every common ecosystem found on the South Carolina coast, making this an unparalleled site for research in the environmental sciences. In addition, over seventy cultural sites on the plantation, including cemeteries, slave cabins, and homes all provide a time capsule for educators.

The presentation will feature The Baroness of Hobcaw, The Life of Belle Baruch.

Lee Brockington is the Coordinator of Public Engagement for the Barony. She is widely acclaimed for her knowlege of South Carolina history.

T The Great Charleston Fire of 1861 A year to the month following secession, a swath of Charleston one mile long and one-seventh of a mile wide was destroyed by fire. This course will deal with the social and constructional factors that led to the near destruction of the most beautiful city in the South.

Daniel Crooks is a retired licensed Charleston guide, former technical college department head, and adjunct professor at the College of Charleston.

Fridays T Stem Cell Therapy Sometimes called the body’s “master cells,” stem cells are the cells that develop into blood, brain, bones, and all of the body’s organs. They have the potential to repair, restore, replace, and regenerate cells, and could possibly be used to treat many medical conditions and diseases now untreatable.

In this class, Dr. Robert Brouillard, MD, a noted hematologist and oncologist, will discuss the current FDA approved uses of stem cell treatments, the latest research on stem cell therapy, and the future of stem cell therapies.

Dr.Robert Brouillard, is a specialist in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology.

He is also the medical director for Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.

T Reading and Writing Poetry Let's read and write poetry together. Mary Oliver tells us ... For the reader: "Poems are fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, as necessary as bread in the pockets of the hungry."

For the writer: "A mind that is lively and inquiring, compassionate, curious, angry, full of music, and full of feeling is a mind full of possible poetry." Let's do it!

Audre Allison has led writing workshops for years on Hilton Head Island and Long Island. She taught writing for thirty years at high school and college levels.

Four Sessions: 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Friday, October 25, November 1, 8, and 15 Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue, 40 Summit Drive alongside the Airport.

T The Battle of Port Royal The battle of Port Royal is seldom even mentioned in talks about the Civil War, as it was a minor skirmish with less than one hundred casualties. However, this was actually one of the decisive battles of the war and many long-term side effects are evident even to this day on Hilton Head.

In addition to discussing these side effects, this seminar will show how asymmetrical warfare was used as a strategy to decide the ultimate outcome of the Civil War. Dave DesJardins is a "snowbird" who lives halfway between the battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg. A research scientist, he has long been fascinated with the strategic aspects of the Civil War. Fridays T The Films of Robin Williams This series, presented by Jim Van Cleave, is designed to show the extraordinary range of Robin Williams' film performances . . . from rollicking comedy to intense dramatic roles. In more than twenty films, he managed to collect five Golden Globe and Oscar Best Actor awards and many more nominations.

October 11: The World According to Garp (1982) Williams stars as a sweet-natured writer whose life is a weird minefield of violence, adultery, rampant feminism, and eerie coincidence. Glenn Close and John Lithgow give impressive support.

October 18: Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) Williams stars as an irreverent morning deejay in war-torn Vietnam. The G.I.s love him and the top brass is up in arms. Forest Whitaker supports in a film directed by Barry Levinson.

October 25: The Birdcage (1996) Based on the French play, La Cage Aux Folles, Williams and Nathan Lane play a gay couple in Miami trying to pass as straight men for the sake of their soon to be married son. Gene Hackman and Diane Wiest are their potential in-laws.

November 1: Good Will Hunting (1997) In a straight dramatic role, Williams garnered a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a psychology professor who tries to reach out to the troubled genius, Will Hunting (Matt Damon).

Saturdays T Raptors of the Lowcountry Lila Arnold, the founder of Lowcountry Raptors, will present various birds of prey on the glove, including hawks, owls, a falcon, and a vulture. During the presentation, the life history of each species will be described, as well as the role each bird plays in our ecosystem. If you are an avid birder or just love things feathered and wild, this presentation is sure to please.

Photos are welcome during the program.

Lila Arnold has twenty years of experience handling birds of prey in both the rehab and educational setting. She carries both state and federal permits to possess raptors for education. She is a retired teacher with twenty-seven years in the classroom.

The Seventh Annual Andy Greenstein Lecture

LHHI is proud to present this annual lecture honoring the memory of our first president and his dedication to an informed conversation on important contemporary issues and personalities.

The Mayor’s Report

As we go to press for this catalog, this year’s Greenstein Lecture will be given by either Mayor John McCann or Town Manager Steve Riley. In any event, the presentation will provide a review of the strategy and plans for the Town of Hilton Head Island over the next five to ten years. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience.

T Nocturnal Creatures of the Lowcountry Join Nancy Owen as she shows the physical adaptations of owls and bats for their nocturnal existence by bringing samples of these "creatures of the night" into the classroom.

She will address our vital need for biodiversity and the impact human activity has on the natural habitat of these animals and the importance of these predators in maintaining the balance of nature.

She hopes to encourage her audience to work to conserve and preserve all our endangered wildlife.

Nancy (Maudi) Owen is a former fifth-grade school teacher and retired veterinary technician. She has been a wildlife educator and rehabilitator since 1993.
