Greetings Lifelong Learners, With just one semester to go to finish LLHHI’s 20th year we thank all our members and the many wonderful people who have put together several hundred programs over the years. It is the teamwork that makes it all possible and we are so happy that you are a part of that team.

Moving forward to our 2025 winter/spring semester, it just does not get any better than the classes we are offering. For example: Sam Adams…the Revolutionary; A Turbulent Court and the Constitution; Watercolor Enhanced Ink Drawings; Invertebrates Everywhere; Daufuskie Daze, a Memoir; Hilton Head Island Hall of Fame with David Lauderdale; The History of Jazz Part 2; and Snow White at the HH Dance School.

Classes will begin on Monday, February 3.

On a sadder note, Gerry Swimmer, who had taught our extremely popular Supreme Court classes, passed away in October. Gerry was always eager to present his program each year and often with more than one hundred participants in the audience. Gerry is greatly missed.

Mondays T A Tour of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina Here is your chance to go behind the scenes to see how the magic happens! This guided tour includes production areas, the scenery shop, costume shop, rehearsal space, and theater.

Learn about the creation of the Art Centers award-winning productions from concept to opening night curtain. The tour includes a light lunch.

There is a $32 per person charge which includes lunch.

Following our tour, each person will receive a $5 OFF discount coupon for the Art Center's next production. In addition, one lucky individual will receive two free tickets for the next production.

T Invertebrates Everywhere This class provides an overview of invertebrates, a diverse group of animals without backbones, which make up over 95% of animal species. It explores key phyla such as arthropods, mollusks, and cnidarians, highlighting their unique anatomical features, adaptations, and ecological roles. You will learn the evolutionary significance and environmental impact of invertebrates on our ecosystems.

Learn some things you may not have known about those who have been inducted into the Hilton Head Island Hall of Fame. You'll see examples of the ethics and values behind the founders of our community, and some personal stories from someone who knew them all.

David Lauderdale has been a journalist in this community for more than 40 years as an editor and columnist at The Island Packet.

T Lowcountry Marine Ecology Join Marine Biologist Amber Kuehn for entertaining insight into the Lowcountry marine environment. Learn why the dolphins like it here and why you should too!

Amber Kuehn is a Marine Biologist and currently manages the Sea Turtle Patrol on Hilton Head.

Mondays T The Art of Quilting The art of quilting can be traced back 3400 years to the first dynasty in ancient Egypt. There is even a popular myth that quilts were used as signals to help slaves in their flight to freedom using the underground railroad.

During this presentation, award winning quilters, Donna Simmons and her husband, Roger will discuss the history and process of creating a quilt and the patterns and techniques of constructing one. They will speak about art quilts, memory quilts, t-shirt quilts and more.

As a bonus, they will have available a “trunk show” of their numerous quilting projects.

Donna Simmons has been quilting for over 18 years. She is a member of the Palmetto Quilt Guild and award-winning quilter. Roger Simmons has 12 years’ experience as a Long Arm Quilter.

T Adventures into the Great Okefenokee Swamp The Great Okefenokee Swamp is home to over 10,000 American alligators and some of the most gorgeous wetlands on the planet. Join naturalist and licensed guide Cathy Sakas as she takes you through the swamp without getting bug bitten or wet!

Cathy J. Sakas has been a professional naturalist and licensed guide for the Okefenokee Swamp since 1976. She has led over 350 overnight trips into the Swamp and has brought back as many people as she started with. She holds a BS in Biology and ME in Science.

She is the author of Swamp Goddess: True Stories from the Okefenokee Swamp.

Tuesdays T Investing Today Another year, another President, and yes, an uncertain stock market that continues to confound even the Wall Street professionals.

February 4: The first class will feature, Janet Williams, a First VP from Wells Fargo Advisors, who will guide us in helping make sure our investment portfolios take advantage of current lower interest rates and lower inflation. Today, most investors seek steady growth with secure income. Janet, with more than 20 years helping investors, is the right person at the right time for this class.

February 11: For the second class, our guest will be Alisa McCray, a founding partner of a local law firm. She will advise you how to make sure your total assets are legally positioned to be passed on to your heirs as safely and quickly as possible.

Alisa will also discuss the legal documents you should have as South Carolina residents.

Both Janet and Alisa will leave adequate time to answer your investment and legal questions. Also, at each class, Lifelong Learning member, Bill Dix will share his thoughts on successful investing that have passed the test of time. He spent 35 years with Smith Barney on Wall Street before retiring to Hilton Head.

Tuesdays T Watercolor Enhanced Ink Drawings Do you love to paint but feel more comfortable with a detailed drawing to start?

In this course Alex Sharma will show how to design your scene, draw up all the details in ink, and then paint it all in with watercolor. In this way, drawn lines become an integral, dynamic part of the painting allowing for strong definition of form enhanced by beautiful, transparent watercolor.

Come prepared to draw and paint from studio still life and from your own reference photographs. Each class begins with a demonstration designed especially for the day’s learning.

Here’s what you will need for this class: If you already have paints, Watercolor paints in at least the following colors: bring what you have.

Cadmium Red (or other primary red) If buying paints for the Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt (or other primary blue) first time, there are some Cadmium Yellow or Lemon Yellow (or other primary yellow) good artist sets that Sap Green (or green of your choice) include these colors.

Burnt Sienna Watercolor palette: or large white plate for mixing. A folding travel palette is a good option. An inexpensive plastic folding palette is available for $5-$6 on most art supply websites such as dickblick.com, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or CheapJoes.com.

Just type the words, “folding watercolor palette” in the search bar on the website.

Watercolor paper: size of your choice. (10” x 14” or smaller is good.) Staples has good watercolor pads at a reasonable price.

Two good quality watercolor brushes: A size #8 or larger round brush and a ½ inch or ¾ inch flat brush is all that you need. (Bring what you have, and we will go from there.)

Pencil, ink pen (ball point or fine Sharpie) and soft eraser Wide mouth container for water: An empty cottage cheese, yogurt, or other container is perfect.

Alexandra Sharma is a Master of Fine Arts and has taught art at the university level. She is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, The Apple Pie Painters, and Delta Phi Delta, the national art honorary.

Tuesday, February 11th • Doors open at 5:00. The program runs until 7:30.

Join us on the evening of February 11for dinner and a concert at the popular Jazz Corner in the Village at Wexford.

The entertainment will be The Jazz Corner Ensemble, featuring pianist Eric Jones, bassist Dave Masteller, percussionist Chris Russell, and a guest saxophonist taking us through a swinging celebration of New Orleans Jazz.

This will be preceded by a four-course dinner (amuse-bouche for the table, gourmet salad, one of four entree selections, and dessert).

Tuesdays T What Pat Conroy Taught Me About Life and Learning John Warley was a Citadel classmate, teammate, and lifelong friend of Pat Conroy.

During their 53-year relationship, they shared wins, losses, and an appreciation for the written word. Warley will relate the lessons taken from his bond of friendship with one of America's best loved writers.

T Daufuskie Daze: A Memoir James and Carol Alberto spent the nine years from 1974 to 1983 teaching American history and math on Daufuskie Island. Join them as they share their experiences, both frustrating and rewarding.

James and Carol Alberto each taught in the Beaufort County school system for thirty years before retirement.

Tuesdays T Ballet Behind the Scenes: Snow White Terpsichore was the Greek goddess of dance, and her name translates to "delight in dancing". And we are delighted to invite you to the Hilton Head Dance Theatre and School Studio to enjoy a live lecture, demonstration, and rehearsal with the dancers of the upcoming Terpsichore performance of Snow White.

Inspired by the classic fairy tale, this charming one act ballet was choreographed by Artistic Directors Karena Brock-Carlyle and John Carlyle. Set to the music of Mark Knopfler, Snow White premiered on Hilton Head in 1993.

In this presentation, choreographer John Carlyle will tell the story of how the ballet "Snow White" was first imagined, scored, and staged.

With John Carlyle, Master teachers Katie Girardi and Jamal Edwards will take you on a journey of the process of creating characters through the storytelling magic of music and dance.

Those who attend this class will be offered two free tickets to Terpsichore at The Seahawk Arts Center on March 22 and 23, 2025.

John Carlyle is the Co-Artistic Director of Hilton Head Dance Theatre and School.

Katie Girardi and dancer/choreographer Jamal Edwards are American ballet Theater Certified Master Teachers at Hilton Head Dance Theatre and School.

Wednesdays T Writing: Creative Nonfiction Do you have a story to tell? A true one, a story you lived, watched firsthand, or researched and studied: That story! This course will help you get started, with a rich menu of creative options that can make a true story better in the telling. We will consider audience, voice, point of view, story arc, modes of discourse, and more.

Elizabeth Robin was an English teacher for thirty-three years. Now retired, she writes full time and has published poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

T The Guns Of August Continue To Echo —

The Consequences of WWI and the Treaty of Paris That Brought It To An End In his continuing survey of U.S. history, Joe Melita posits that the world we live in still reverberates with the failures of the peace treaty ending what was supposed to be “the war to end all wars.” He argues the seeds of World War II were planted at Versailles, but many current world problems can also be traced that tragic conflict and the peace treaty that brought it to an end.

Joe Melita is a retired high school history teacher with thirty-four years of experience. He taught numerous Advanced Placement courses in both American and European history. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Queens College in New York City.

Wednesdays T On The Set with Sea Glass Stage Company In this class, students will learn about how Sea Glass Stage Company was founded and the vision behind its establishment at Coligny Theatre. Students will gain insight into the process of bringing a show to life by discussing the script and the creative process while on the set of Next to Normal.

Discussions will explore how the artistic team approaches script selection, character development, direction, and design choices. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to see Next to Normal, which runs from February 21 to March 8 at a discounted rate. This class is a blend of theory, discussion, and practical experience in the world of theatre!

Alex Clark is a founding member of Sea Glass Stage Company, the Director of Education, and teaches theatre and English at a local high school.

T Learning from Artists with Disabilities During this class you will learn to appreciate the unique and often overlooked talents of artists with disabilities.

The Full Spectrum Studio is the only studio in the Lowcountry for artists with disabilities. They currently host seven artists, each with unique skills and abilities who are excited to learn new ways to express themselves creatively.

While their primary medium is pottery, they also use fused glass and weaving.

The class will cover how Full Spectrum was created and the programs it offers.

Wednesdays T Current Events For over a decade Hilton Head lifelong learners have come together to discuss the issues of the day—locally, nationally, and around the world. We seldom solve anything, but the conversation is always spirited and informative.

This session will occur shortly after the inauguration of the new Trump administration. There will be lots to talk about!

As always, your moderators will select the topics for the first session. Thereafter, participants will decide what they want to discuss. Remember, all points of view are welcome, and all will be respected.

T History of Jazz Martin Lesch continues his historic journey through the history of American jazz music and its role in American culture begun in our fall 2024 semester.

Acclaimed pianist Martin Lesch plays everything from early stride piano to renditions of the Beatles and Bob Marley with equal joy. Originally from New York City, he has been a staple of the low country music scene for almost two decades. His shows every Monday at Hilton Head’s legendary Jazz Corner have sold out for years.

Thursdays T What's New with Artificial Intelligence This class is a follow up from our February '24 session on Smart Homes. In it we will briefly summarize our earlier material and then turn to new developments in the AI field and suggest how several of them may be relevant to our own lives.

Paul Weismantel has worked for forty years in high tech hardware and software for governments and businesses in North America, Europe, and Asia. He has become LLHHI’s resident expert in new technology.

T The Civil War and America's National Park System Over ninety of our 431 National Park Service sites have a direct connection to the Civil War! Such is the impact the Civil War had on American history and the country we live in today. We'll explore these sites, revisiting profound tales of heroism and tragedy that changed the course of our nation.

David Kroese has visited all 431 National Park Service units amassing over 1,600 site visits. He is the author of The Centennial: A Journey through America's National Park System.

Thursdays T Enigma, ULTRA, and the Spies of the Airwaves Join Paul Weismantle as he demystifies the way in which the allies cracked the Axis codes during World War II. The story goes far beyond the Enigma Machine and the work of Alan Turing. Many contributed to the interception, decryption, and distribution of enemy signals which contributed mightily to our eventual victory.

Paul Weismantel has worked for forty years work in high tech hardware and software for governments and businesses in North America, Europe, and Asia for commercial and military use. He is a regular contributor to LLHHI classes on topics related to modern communications and technology.

T Creating a Bird Friendly Backyard Learn the basic features of a bird friendly backyard and how to use them to attract more birds to your yard. The core of the content focuses on understanding the value of preserving native habitats to ensure the long-term viability of our native and migratory birds.

Mark Bottini is the manager of the Wild Birds Unlimited store on Hilton Head Island and Director of Operations for SPR Enterprises, which oversees six owner/operated WBU stores.

Thursdays T A Turbulent Court and the Constitution March 6 — A Turbulent Court and Conflicts of Interest: We will discuss the Missouri Compromise and how it was intended to solve the issue of slavery in the rapidly expanding United States. Instead it led to turbulent Supreme Court decisions in Dred Scott, the Habeas Corpus Act, and Ex Parte Merryman. Did these cases set the stage for Reconstruction and virulent opposition between the North, the South, and the burgeoning West?

March 13 — Has the Chevron Decision Begun the Dismantling of the Regulatory State: This decision upended decades of the courts deferring to regulators to interpret vague environmental laws. Has this, and other recent cases decided by the conservative court majority, created a Supreme Court standard for legislative intent through the express words of the Constitution? Is there such a thing as "original intent" or is SCOTUS creating their brand of intended results and, therefore, consequences? Are these cases as seismic as the media and political partisans portray them to be?

March 20 — What Do You Want, Federal or State Supremacy and Prerogatives?

What did the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation mean regarding the push and pull between state and federal power? How and why did the Constitution upend state prerogatives? Did Congress expand its power and overreach the Constitution? How did the South explain its right to succession through the seminal documents of liberty authored by our founding fathers?

March 27 — For Every Push There Is a Pull: Should the Supreme Court continue to lean toward judicial originalism or does it have an obligation to reflect of the popular opinions and passions of the day? For what purpose was the Supreme Court created by the Constitution?

Has the Supreme Court always been a results oriented extra judicial body? How do the politics of the day affect the thinking of the Court? Should it?

Eliott Good has 45 years of experience as a securities trial lawyer representing the industry's largest financial services companies and regulatory compliance agencies.

He currently serves as a federal securities arbitration judge.

Fridays T Films Exploring Society and the World of Work This film series explores the impact work has individuals, companies, and society. Join us to explore the themes of corporate greed, encroaching real estate development, family businesses, loyalty to an employer, personal sacrifices for a career, scams, and unlikely business partners.

February 7 — The Remains of the Day (1993): A butler (Anthony Hopkins) who sacrificed body and soul to service in the years leading up to World War II realizes too late how misguided his loyalty was to his lordly employer.

February 14 — Sunshine State (2002): A woman and her new husband return to her hometown roots in coastal northern Florida, and must deal with family, business, and encroaching real estate development. Starring Edie Falco and Angela Bassett.

February 21 — McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971): Charismatic gambler John McCabe (Warren Beatty) arrives in a mining community and decides to open a brothel. The locals are impressed by his confident demeanor and fast talk, but crafty prostitute Constance Miller (Julie Christie) sees through McCabe's words and realizes he isn't as sharp as he seems.

February 28 — The Hudsucker Proxy (1994): A naive business graduate is installed as president of a manufacturing company as part of a stock scam. Tim Robbins and Paul Newman star in this Coen brother’s film.

Roz and Steve Shaw have been teaching film courses for the OLLI-RU program at Rutgers University since 2003.

Fridays T The Legacy of Mitchelville This class will examine the history of Mitchelville, the "First Town of Self-Governing, Formerly Enslaved People in the United States," the process of protecting and preserving this history, and plans for the upcoming cultural celebration at the site.

Ahmad Ward is Executive Director of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, an historic preservationist, and expert on American civil and human rights history.

T Advancing Sustainability on Hilton Head Island This class will explore the principles and practices of sustainability tailored to our local municipality. Learn how local governments can implement effective strategies to reduce environmental impact, enhance quality of life, and foster resilient, ecofriendly communities.

Fridays T Samuel Adams — The Revolutionary!

"It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." Samuel Adams Thomas Jefferson asserted that “Samuel Adams was that Man who was the leader of the Revolution.”

John Adams claimed his cousin was the “shrewdest politician of all.”

Sam Adams helped package and amplify the impact of the Boston Massacre; the event that first shook the colonists. He helped mastermind the Boston Tea Party.

You will learn how Adams hid behind his many masks and stratagems and built consensus for a new nation and put together what could be said was the greatest campaign of civil resistance in U.S. history.

Dan Regenold will take you back to the founding of our country, where you will learn about the true spirit of the men who fought to liberate America and the man who led the way, Samuel Adams.

Dan Regenold has a master’s degree in economics from Xavier University.

He has been active in Ohio and national politics since 2003 and has successfully fought against state tax increases and championed legislation for a balanced Federal budget.

Enclose a check for $50 to cover class fees. That allows you to take as many courses as you wish.

Add an additional $80 per person if you wish to attend the Jazz Corner Event. Add $32 if you sign up for the tour of the Art Center of Coastal Carolina.

Please include your check to Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island for $50. If you wish to attend the Jazz Corner Event add $80. The Arts Center tour is an additional $32.

We need audio/visual assistants. Training will be provided.

All class fees will be waived for trained volunteers.
