Dear Colleagues in Learning, We hope you enjoy the Fall 2016 catalog and will sign up for as many courses as you like.

There should be something for everyone in this eclectic mix. There are a number of interesting courses this semester such as “Escape From Dixie”, “The Early Films of Alfred Hitchcock”, “The Universe” and “Stephen Hawking: An Unfettered Mind”. In all there are twenty-four courses this semester.

It is time to renew your LLHHI membership. The membership fee is $40 and the registration fee for fall is $45. Please check the registration form at the back of the catalog to see how you can pay by check or credit card. For limited classes use our web site to register immediately. Registration by mail will take longer.

This past year saw a great membership increase. At the end of our academic year we had 291 members. We are, however, always looking for new members, so bring a friend to a class and encourage them to join LLHHI. Enjoy your classes and thanks for being a loyal member.

Mondays T Ragtime, A Novel by E.L. Doctorow At the very center of Ragtime, knitting the historical threads together, are two fictional families living in or near New York City. Through the magic of fiction they interact with many famous people of the period.(1902-1917).

The novel entertains while it looks at burning social issues of the times, many of which still haunt Americans today.

Participants can purchase Ragtime from Amazon or Barnes and Noble in printed or digital form. They are required to read to at least fifty pages prior to the first class.

Jim Kadra has guided LLHHI students through a number of worthy American novels. His relaxed style is designed to elicit broad participation.

Mondays T The Universe This five session course examines our visible universe. Session I will be a search for ET, who resides in “a galaxy far, far away.” In session II we will then explore our own galaxy, The Milky Way. In Session III we will discuss the origin and present structure of our solar system. The current search for other stars with planetary systems will be described in Session IV. Finally in session V, we will consider the fundamental building blocks of the Universe.

Dr. Doyle Evans is an astrophysicist who spent most of his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico working in Space Science Programs. While at Los Alamos, Dr. Evans served as Director of the Earth and Space Science Divisions and retired as Chief Scientist of Space Programs.

T Transportation Wheels and Ways Transportation Engineer and self-described “ tree hugger,” Randy Tardy, shares his perspective on 21st century transportation challenges in the context of preserving our Hilton Head Island paradise.

Here are just some of the subjects he will touch on in this two-session course: What is the role of government at all levels in getting over our love affair with the automobile? How can we protect pedestrians from drivers? Why do roundabouts make roads safer? Why do we have traffic jams? What are the common mistakes in parking lots? Should we embrace hybrid and all-electric automobiles?

What is the role of bicycles and public transportaion in solving our problems?

Randall Tardy has been a Transportation Engineer for forty-five years in the public and private sectors.

T Open Mic: Share Your Writing with Your Classmates Here is an opportunity to read your original story, poem, or anecdote to a friendly and appreciative Lifelong Learning audience. It may be fiction, non-fiction, previously published, or non-published.

You’ll have up to seven minutes to share your creative work. Come and read, comment, or just listen and enjoy the class reactions. Class limit, 20.

Your moderator, Norm Levy, facilitates The Island Writer’s Network’s monthly Open Mic. He is a published author, and has presented courses for us on “Advertising” and “Light Verse.” His assistant, Jim Riggs is a member of Island Writer’s Network and the author of the novel, Freedom Run. Tuesdays T The Supreme Court’s Greatest Flops This year Charlie Sanders will review five decisions of the Court which conventional wisdom considers THE WORST that the Court has ever rendered. We will explore the justification for these decisions, the Constitutional doctrines applied, and their surprising legacy in contemporary American jurisprudence.

Don’t miss this chance to cast your own vote as a member of the Supreme Court of Hilton Head.

October 11: Buck v. Bell — We will explore the Court’s decision sustaining a Virginia statute authorizing the sterilization of individuals determined to be feeble-minded. The author of the opinion, none other than Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., was quoted with approval by defense counsel at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals.

October 18: Lochner v. New York — This case, involving the state’s right to set bakery hours, later served as the basis for declaring unconstitutional many of the progressive state statutes designed to provide health and safety protection at the turn of the 20th century and much of the New Deal. This same case was used to support an individual’s right to privacy and gay marriage.

October 25: Korematsu v. The United States — We will revisit the decision which upheld the military order authorizing the establishment of Japanese internment camps during World War II based on inaccurate information submitted to the Court by the military. Today this decision has implications for the Court dealing with the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and terrorism generally.

November 1: Dred Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson — These two decisions shaped U.S. race relations for over one hundred years. Some historians claim Justice Taney’s opinion in Dred Scott accelerated the start of the Civil War while Plessy v. Ferguson sustained the doctrine of “separate but equal” and ratified segregation as a national policy until overturned in the 1950’s.

This is Charlie Sanders’ ninth class for LLHHI. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania law school and practiced law in New York.

Tuesdays T Meaningful and Enriching Travel Travel guides simply do not prepare us for what our photographs reveal to us when we get home.

Stimulated by their experiences, our instructors report they often do more research after a journey than before. Hear from two seasoned travelers and how their exposure to the history and cultures of other lands has contributed to their fuller appreciation of the uniqueness of people they’ve met along the way.

Mieke Smit has been driven by an innate curiosity about other countries since her first ocean voyage from her homeland in The Netherlands to New York. She has since explored many corners of the globe developing her distinct taste for history, archeology, art and the cultures of the people. She has presented her travel talks for over sixteen years on the Island.

Joan Deery’s graduation present from college was a three-month Eurorail pass. Continuing to travel in her career with IBM she visited many Asian countries while living in Japan. She established a sincere appreciation for the commonalities and differences in the people she has met and continues to meet on her frequent trips abroad.

T Adventures in Play Reading Ready to shed your everyday indentity? Join this play-reading class, choose a role, and become someone else for a little while. Under the direction of Jim Fannon, an experienced actor and director, participants will explore roles in a selection of comedies and dramas.

Class will be conducted in classic “first read-through” style without props and costumes. Participates will take turns being entertainers or as an appreciative audience. Everyone has a part. No experience necessary.

For over thirty years, Jim Fannon, as owner and director of Fannon Osmond has produced multi-media marketing presentations for major corporations. In retirement: he is Docent and Civil War Reenactor at Coastal Discovery Museum, co-founder of Hilton Head Plantation play-reading group, and presently engaged in Seabrook theatricals.

Wednesdays T Current Events The timing is perfect for this long-running staple in our lineup—the closing weeks of the Presidential election. While we will discuss other local, national, and global topics of the day, all eyes will be on the balloting for our next President.

Participants will be expected to be up-to-date on the news of the week for each class. Come and voice your opinions. As always, controversial and contrarian points of view are welcome.

Your moderators are Rick Anderson and Jim Van Cleave. Rick is a retired psychiatrist from Baltimore. Jim is a marketing veteran of Procter & Gamble. Both are news junkies. Rick leans liberal and Jim conservative.

T The European Struggle to Settle North America In the early 16th century three great European rivals--England, France, and Spain-- claimed large tracts of land in North America. However, each knew that claiming the land was not enough. To hold territory and keep others out of it, a country needed to establish a permanent settlement.

Thus began the long struggle to colonize North America. It would take many failures before each country was successful and St. Augustine, Jamestown and Quebec were established.

This course is based on the book The European Struggle to Settle North America, Colonizing Attempts

by England, France and Spain, 1521-1608.

October 12: Early Spanish and French Settlements in the Southeastern United States.

October 19: The Spanish Settlement at Santa Elena on Parris Island - Meet a Settler from Santa Elena.

October 26: English Settlements in North America - Meet Joan Peirce, an Honest, Industrious Woman from the James Towne Settlement.

November 2: French Settlements in Canada November 9: Why were St. Augustine, Jamestown, and Quebec successful?

Margaret Pickett is a graduate of the University of Maryland, a former teacher who worked for twenty years in museum education in Williamsburg, VA. She is also a Living History Interpreter who has researched and developed programs based on the lives of prominent 16th, 17th, and 18th century women. She is the coauthor of the book on which the class is based.

Wednesdays T Fraud and Misconduct in Scientific and Medical Research Science is the search for the truth. Mistakes happen in the uncharted waters of scientific discovery.

From alchemy to false pharmaceutical data, fraudulent research contaminates all aspects of our lives.

This course will share what our regulatory authorities are doing to monitor and ensure safe and effective drugs and medical devices are available. It will also explore and question what is being done in the scientific arena to provide honest and accurate data where people’s sense of wellbeing is at stake.

This course will be non-technical and requires no scientific background Dr. Jerri Perkins spent eight years at the FDA as a medical officer and was Acting Division Director for Medical Devices.

Dr. Paul Weiss is a retired physician who has published numerous medical articles and served on the editorial board of Clinical Nuclear Medicine.

Thursdays T International Arms Control—What is it? Why do we have it?

How does it work? Does it make us safer?

October 27: This session will provide an overview of arms control covering nuclear, chemical, biological, and conventional weaponry. You’ll learn how arms control agreements are negotiated and implemented, with an emphasis on verification.

November 3: The U.S. currently is party to a number of bilateral and multilateral arms control regimes limiting nuclear, chemical, and biological capabilities. The discusion will include Iraq, recent Syrian use of chemical weapons, as well as U.S./Russian nuclear proliferation control agreements.

November 10: Verification is the key to success including comprehensive data exchanges and on-site inspections. The instructor will draw on his personal involvement as an analyst, inspector, and trainer.

November 17: Putting it all together--the 2015 Iran Nuclear Agreement and the case of North Korea.

John Gilbert is a retired Air Force Colonel with over forty years’ experience in nuclear and missile technology, strategic operations, and arms control. He currently conducts training courses for the U.S. Department of Defense and the International Atomic Energy Agency which conducts inspections in Iran under the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Thursdays T Texas v. The United States Gerry Swimmer returns with a one session course on a crucial case now wending its way through the courts; Texas v. The United States. Texas has been joined by twenty-five other states challenging President Obama’s executive order granting protection to families of illegal aliens from possible deportation. The issue is whether or not this order is a violation of the Separation of Powers. The District Court believes it is. What, if anything, will the now evenly divided Supremes have to say?

Gerry Swimmer is a retired executive of Ingersoll Rand Company. This is his fifth time leading popular courses in constitutional law.

T The Muslim Brotherhood The Muslim Brotherhood was established in 1928 by an Egyptian school teacher whose initial goal was to instill Islamic ideals throughout the Arab world. The organization quickly gained the support of other Islamic groups for its political activism and charity work in setting up hospitals and businesses. However, the movement also suffered from periodic government crackdowns for alleged terrorist activities.

This class will take you on a journey from the birth of the Muslim Brotherhood as a charitable organization, its condemnation as a terrorist organization and finally, it’s election and recent overthrow as the democratically elected government of Egypt.

Dr. David Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, was born and raised in Jerusalem and at age 18 immigrated to the United States to continue his education. He received his PhD from the University of Houston in Chemical Engineering. He retired to Hilton Head after a thirty-four year career with Union Carbide/Dow Chemical.

T Human Trafficking in South Carolina Human trafficking is a real and growing problem in South Carolina. This class will cover basic information about the issue including new laws to address it, victim red flags and identifiers, the agencies involved, and our statewide task force.

Marie Sazehn is a licensed attorney and Human Trafficking Program Coordinator for South Carolina.

Thursdays T Escape From Dixie First Lieutenant John Lafler was captured at the Battle of Plymouth, North Carolina in April 1864 and endured ten months of captivity in Confederate prisons. During this period, he escaped four times before successfully returning to the Union lines. This course will describe his experiences and explain how the POW system was administered by both sides during the Civil War. John Ball, a descendant of Lt. Lafler, is a retired military fighter pilot and civilian test pilot. He instructed at the USAF and USN test pilot schools for twenty-two years. He has written several books, including one about his ancestor’s Civil War experiences.

T A Musical Biography of Irving Berlin Join James Pegolotti for the story of Irving Berlin, his life and songs, with piano selections and video segments from films and documentaries.

James Pegolotti has presented similar programs for LLHHI on Johnny Mercer and George Gershwin. He is a retired professor who began such programs over a dozen years ago in Danbury, Connecticut.

T The Magic of Johnny Mercer This entertaining class will highlight the immense impact Johnny Mercer made on The American Songbook. Carole Galli will narrate, sing, and engage the class in songs Americans are still singing. As with many artists, his life was not without controversy which will add a little “spice” to the presentation.

A classically trained vocalist, Carole Galli devoted thirty-three years as a music educator in Michigan. Carole has performed with the Hilton Head Symphony and at The Jazz Corner.

Thursdays T Let’s Get Physical II Back by popular demand, LLHHI is excited to again offer a course in strength and flexibility training for our members at Breakthrough Fitness Gym. Your instructors feel strongly that mind and body exercises are essential to staying active both mentally and physically. Strengthening exercises, when done properly and through the full range of motion, increase a person’s flexibility and balance and decrease the likelihood and severity of falls.

The course will include four sessions of one hour each. There is no extra charge to participate.

Stacey Saritelli is fitness director at Breakthrough Fitness Center on Hilton Head. She is an ACE/AFPA personal trainer who specializes in strength training and lifestyle weight management.

Dr. Jerri Perkins is a M.D. who has taught several popular medically related and yoga classes for LLHHI. Four One Hour Sessions: 3:00 to 4:00 PM, Thursdays: October 27 and November 3, 10, and 17 Breakthrough Fitness, 130 Arrow Road (Between Target Road and Dunnegan’s Alley) Class Limit: 20

Fridays T Great Decisions Dr. Isam Sakati returns with a discussion of four challenging, contemporary issues.

October 28: The Koreas - The North is underdeveloped, impoverished and ruled by a corrupt, authoritarian government, while the South is rapidly becoming one of the most developed countries in the world. With such a wide gap, is unification is possible, or even desirable?

November 4: United Nations - How well is the UN doing in reaching its stated goals to eradicate poverty, hunger, and discrimination, while ensuring justice and dignity for all peoples by 2030?

Novemver 11: Climate Change - The presidential election in 2016 will be the first to place an major emphasis on environmental changes. What can the next administration practically do to affect the environmental crisis?

November 18: Cuba and the U.S. - The United States has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship into the 21st century.

Dr. Isam Sakati has led the Great Decisions courses for more than eight years for LLHHI. A retired physician, he was born in Damascus, Syria, educated at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and Cornell University medical School.

Fridays T The Early Films of Alfred Hitchcock Join Jim Van Cleave as he presents six Hitchcock films that shaped an astounding career. We begin this series with the first film to combine the classic Hitchcock trademarks of a beautiful woman (usually blonde) in peril, a hero falsely accused, unusual camera tricks, and, of course, a cameo role

by Hithcock himself. We finish with what most critics agree is the finest of his creations, 1958’s Vertigo, an almost flawless thriller with the Master of Suspense at the peak of his powers.

October 14: The Lodger: A Story of London Fog - 1927 starring Ivor Novello and June Tripp in a retelling of the Jack the Ripper saga. Someone is savagely stabbing blonde showgirls. Is it our mysterious lodger?

October 21: The 39 Steps - 1935 starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

One of Hitch’s earliest espionage films involving a harrowing, often comedic chase from London to the Scottish Highlands and back again.

October 28: Sabotage - 1936 starring Sylvia Sidney and Oscar Homolka. Set in 1936 London, the film foreshadows the terrorist bombings of today. In it Hitch examines the thin veneer of security that shadows our everyday lives.

November 4: Suspicion - 1941 starring Joan Fontaine and Cary Grant.

Hitchcock is now working in America. Is dashing, spendthrift Johnny Aysgarth trying to murder his dowdy wife, Lina Laidlaw?

November 11: The Wrong Man - 1956 starring Henry Fonda and Vera Miles.

Hitchcock explores the impact on the life of an ordinary, decent man accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Very noir. Very Kafkaesk.

November 18: Vertigo - 1958 starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. A beautiful blond, a flawed hero, obsession, and of course murder, all come together in this masterpiece of suspense. Hitch never did it better.

Jim Van Cleave loves old movies and loves to share them with you.

Fridays T An Invitation to Read and Write Poetry With Audry Allison’s guidance, you will read and write poetry, attempting to form a relationship with the sounds and rhythms of the engaging and elegant language of the form.

You will try some of the devices and techniques used by successful poets, remembering that in poetry we search to express the inexpressible . . . the known in a new way. There is no rule book.

And finally, we hope you will become inspired to share the poetry you write with the class.

Audre Allison has taught writing workshops several years for Lifelong Learning. She also taught at high school and university levels, at hospitals and prisons, and was a part of extensive national research into the process of writing.

Saturdays T Dolphin Cruise Aboard the Island Queen Cruise along Broad Creek Marina aboard the Island Queen. You’ll see osprey, eagles, oyster catchers, herons, and, of course, Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. Once spotted, Captains Scott and Jesse will circle the boat to allow for plenty of picture taking of these spectacular mammals.

As the Island Queen maneuvers toward Calibogue Sound, you’ll sight Spanish Wells, Brahms Point and the captains will entertain you with yarns, lore and legend of Hilton Head Island.

There is a $20 charge for this adventure. Reservations are mandatory with a limit of 40 (Adults only please). Include your payment as part of your normal class fees on line or with your mail-in registration form. No refunds after October 1. The boat departs from the Broad Creek Marina promptly at 11:00 AM. T The Sixth Annual Andy Greenstein Lecture

LHHI is proud to present this annual lecture honoring the memory of our first president and his dedication to an informed conversation on important contemporary issues and personalities.

Stephen Hawking: An Unfettered Mind Kitty Ferguson has been writing and lecturing on science for twenty-five years, making the language and concepts of physics and cosmology understandable for laypersons. This presentation is based on her first biography of Hawking, entitled Stephen Hawking: Quest for a Theory of the Universe, later revised to Stephen Hawking: An Unfettered Mind.

Kitty has now written seven books on science with the encouragement and guidance of Hawking himself, and she has consulted on several of his books including, The Universe in a Nutshell.

Ms. Ferguson lives in Bluffton and in Cambridge, UK where her husband is a Professor of Global Governance. Her latest book is about the life and works of famous scientists.

Membership in LLHHI Annual Membership Dues: Membership in Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island is open to anyone, regardless of age or residence, upon payment of $40 in annual dues for each individual.

Our academic year runs from early October to late April the following year, encompassing two semesters—fall, (six weeks) and winter/spring (eight weeks).

Fall Course Registration: The fall registration fee is $45. This allows you to take as many courses as you wish. Also, you are welcome to bring a friend one time to any course.

To register and pay electronically, simply visit our website at www.lifelonglearninghhi.org. Click REGISTRATION and fill out the form to select courses. You can use PayPal or your own credit card to pay the necessary fees.

Enclose a check to cover annual dues ($40) and the fall registration fee ($45). Note: These charges are unchanged from last year.
