Dear Colleagues in Learning, Here’s hoping the weather behaves itself this fall semester. We know you will enjoy the fall 2017 catalog and will sign up for as many courses as you like. There should be something for everyone in this eclectic mix. In all, there are twenty-nine courses this semester.

It is time to renew your LLHHI membership. The $40 membership fee and the $45 registration fee for the fall semester are due to be paid now. Please check the registration form at the back of the catalog to see how you can pay by check or credit card. For limited occupancy classes use our website to register immediately. Registration by mail will take longer.

This past year saw a steady membership increase. At the end of our academic year, we had 267 members. We are, however, always looking for new members, so bring a friend to a class and encourage them to join LLHHI. Enjoy your classes; thanks for being such a loyal member, and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

Mondays T The Role of Women in the History and Development

of Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island’s history includes the contributions of strong women whose roles were defined by plantation life, isolation, and war. They were pioneers who led the way and fought to establish a healthy lifestyle.

This presentation will cover these notable Hilton Head women from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the isolation after the Union Army left, and the modern development era.

Mondays T Our Incredible Universe October 9: Our Universe: (E.T. call home)- What exactly is "Our Universe"?

When and how did it begin? How large is it and what does it consist of? How many galaxies are there? Join us in our search for E.T as we explore the answers to these questions and experience the beauty and majesty of the universe of which we are a very small part.

October 16: The Milky Way: (not the candy bar)-Our sun is one star in the Milky Way Galaxy, which has a total of about two hundred billion stars. In this class, we will explore the structure of stars and the source of energy that powers them.

October 23: Men Are From Mars: (and Pluto has been defrocked)-In this session we will explore the composition and history of our sun and each of the eight major planets that circle it.

October 30: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star: (telescopes in the sky) - The availability of capable, reliable satellites has opened completely new fields of astronomy, enabling us to search for other stars with planetary systems that may be capable of supporting life.

November 6: Putting it All Together: In our final session, we will consider the fundamental building blocks of the universe.

Dr. Doyle Evans is an astrophysicist who spent most of his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico working in Space Science Programs. Mondays T Historic Architecture in the Lowcountry:

A Tale of Three Cities in the Plantation Age The Southeastern Lowcountry has preserved some of the country's outstanding regional variations of the architectural styles that swept the English-speaking world in the 18th and 19th centuries. Elite rice and cotton planters retreated every summer from their plantation homes to elaborate, sophisticated mansions in town to escape the enervating heat and fevers in the sea islands and marshy inland. They erected both humble and magnificent churches and public buildings to demonstrate their piety and citizenship.

Beginning with a study of Native Americans in the region, Gordon Simmons will present an overview of Lowcountry architecture from the founding of the colonies of South Carolina and Georgia to the Civil War and its aftermath.

Tuesdays T The Supreme Court’s Greatest Flops This year Charlie Sanders will review five decisions of the Court which conventional wisdom considers THE WORST that the Court has ever rendered. We will explore the justification for these decisions, the Constitutional doctrines applied, and their surprising legacy in contemporary American jurisprudence.

Don’t miss this chance to cast your own vote as a member of the Supreme Court of Hilton Head.

October 10: Buck v. Bell – We will explore the Court’s decision sustaining a Virginia statute authorizing the sterilization of individuals determined to be feeble-minded. The author of the opinion, none other than Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., was quoted with approval by defense counsel at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals.

October 17: Lochner v. New York – This case, involving the state’s right to set bakery hours, later served as the basis for declaring unconstitutional many of the progressive state statutes designed to provide health and safety protection at the turn of the 20th century and during much of the New Deal.

This same case was used to support both an individual’s right to privacy and gay marriage.

October 24: Korematsu v. The United States – We will revisit the decision which upheld the military order authorizing the establishment of Japanese internment camps during World War II based on inaccurate information submitted to the Court by the military. Today this decision has implications for the Court dealing with the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and terrorism generally.

October 31: Dred Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson – These two decisions shaped U.S. race relations for over one hundred years. Some historians claim Justice Taney’s opinion in Dred Scott accelerated the start of the Civil War, while Plessy v. Ferguson sustained the doctrine of “separate but equal” and ratified segregation as a national policy until overturned in the 1950’s.

This is Charlie Sanders’ ninth class for LLHHI. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and practiced law in New York.

Tuesdays T The Electoral College: Why it Was Formed and How it Works The Electoral College is a unique American invention. Usually the popular vote and the electoral college vote coincide in selecting our President. But not always, as in our recent election. What is the historical basis for this odd system? Has it served us well? You decide.

Gerry Swimmer is a retired lawyer and Vice President of Ingersoll Rand Company. This is his sixth term presenting popular courses in constitutional law.

T Global Climate Change: What We Know and

What We Don’t Know

Scientist Dave DesJardins will sift through the evidence to provide a brief guide as to what we currently know and don't know about the planet's most burning issue.

But the most important question of all may be, what can be done about it?

October 24: Is the acceleration of global warming related to human activity on the planet? How accurate were the predictions in Al Gore's 2006 movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and its 2016 sequel, An Inconvenient Sequel, Truth to Power which took awards at the recent Sundance Film Festival.

October 31: What political and financial considerations are on the table? What would be the cost/ benefit ratio to companies and governments if a carbon tax required polluters to pay the true cost of manufacturing?

November 7: How have historic catastrophic events changed the orbit of the earth, and what potential cascading events might bring doomsday upon us sooner that we think? What activist role can individuals play to pursue a best case scenario?

Dave DesJardins is a retired research scientist widely known for his work in the field of Exploratory Data Analysis. He has taught his innovative statistical data analysis techniques at George Washington University, the USDA Graduate School, and the United Nations.

Tuesdays T The Fungus Among Us This class will discuss the vital role of fungi in the web of life. It will include a description of “good” and “bad” fungi as they interact with humans and the plant kingdom. It will highlight the role of fungi that produce antibiotics and explores other areas where fungi are essential to life as we know it. As a special feature, you will learn how to create your own shiitake mushroom garden.

T Qigong Qigong has been a Chinese mind-body practice for over 5,000 years. It has many health benefits. By using the breath, body movements, and mindfulness, it can decrease blood pressure and chronic pain and improve balance and flexibility. Give it a try!

Linda Boyd is a licensed independent social worker with thirty-five years in private practice. She has been a certified Qigong and Tai Chi instructor for over fifteen years.

T The Entrepreneurial Artist: John James Audubon

in the Lowcountry

John James Audubon’s Birds of America ranks as one of the greatest achievements in American art. Its groundbreaking format, depicting over four hundred of North America’s known bird species life-size and in habitat, captured the imagination of the public and catapulted him into international fame. This presentation will provide the class with insight into Audubon’s ambitious, self-styled role as adventurer, artist, and natural scientist. In addition, special emphasis will be given to Audubon's work in the South Carolina lowcountry.

Ron Roth lectures for the speaker’s bureau of the Humanities Council of South Carolina. He is a former director of the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania, and director of the Nebraska Museum of Art of the University of Nebraska. During the course of his career, he has curated several exhibitions on the art of John James Audubon and made major purchases of Audubon's work.

Wednesdays T Current Events Join our open forum where current events, local, national, and global, are discussed in an unstructured setting. Class members are advised of the topics, for the first session, and thereafter choose the subjects themselves.

Participants will be expected to do some reading in preparation for each session and to join in the group discussions. The object is to air all sides of an issue. As always, contrarian and controversial points of view are welcome!

Your moderators are Rick Anderson a retired psychiatrist who practiced in Baltimore until his retirement to Hilton Head in 1999. He is a liberal. Jim Van Cleave a thirty-seven year veteran of Proctor & Gamble in marketing. He presents classic films for LLHHI and is a conservative.

T Adventures in Play Reading Ready to shed your everyday identity? Join this play-reading class, choose a role, and become someone else for a little while. Under the direction of Jim Fannon, an experienced actor and director, participants will explore roles in a selection of comedies and dramas.

Class will be conducted in classic “first read-through� style without props and costumes. Participants will take turns being entertainers or as an appreciative audience. Everyone has a part. No experience necessary.

For over thirty years, Jim Fannon, as owner and director of Fannon Osmond has produced multi-media marketing presentations for major corporations. In retirement: he is Docent and Civil War Reenactor at Coastal Discovery Museum, co-founder of Hilton Head Plantation play-reading group, and presently engaged in Seabrook theatricals.

Wednesdays T Fairy Tales in Performance Taking the oral and literary traditions of storytelling to the stage and screen, Michelle Audet presents artistic interpretations of classic fairy tales that have been adapted to explore the complex needs of the modern world; how writers, film-makers and artists have found that the universality of these stories speaks to the here and now. She will show videos of ballets, musicals, opera, film, and television that illustrating that art serves as a mirror of our hopes, fears, and humanity.

Michelle Audet began her professional career as the Founding Director of Education for New York City Ballet. Mentored by George Balanchine, Ms. Audet set the standard for innovative arts education programming with "Ballet for Young People" and “Storytelling Through Dance.�

T Mideast Musicians Build Bridges for Peace In this multi-media presentation, Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim co-founds the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with Edward Said in the hope that young Arab and Israeli musicians can learn to disagree without fighting. Argentine-Israeli pianist Martha Argerich joins the young musicians in their rehearsals and concert in Buenos Aires.

This orchestra has recently been designated a United Nations Global Advocate for Cultural Understanding.

Jane Davis Sine has provided us with music appreciation courses for many years, She started giving adult courses at Marymount College in New York before settling in Hilton Head in the fall and winter months. Wednesdays T The Communion of Saints:

A Pastor’s Potpourri of Parishioners What constitutes a “saint”--extraordinary righteousness, unusual holiness, near-sinlessness? John Miller will review those and similar questions by recalling some of the saints he knew during his fifty-plus years as a parish pastor, utilizing vignettes from his recently-published book. In his understanding, everyone is a potential, if not an actual, saint, and God seems to be remarkably flexible and tolerant in whom He chooses to be saints. For example, not all saints believe in God, but all who believe in God are saints. Halos can be permanently gleaming or forever tarnished, with a heavenly golden hue or an earthy burnt umber appearance. Every personality is unique, and all personalities are saintly in their own fashion. Come and discover whether even you might be a saint.

T Be Proactive About Your Health Today, a good patient-doctor relationship is more of a partnership. You and your doctor should work as a team. This means asking questions if the doctor’s explanations or instructions are unclear, bringing up problems even if the doctor doesn’t ask. All of this is true at any age. But, when you’re older, it becomes even more important to talk often and comfortably with your doctor. Your health has a big impact on other aspects of your life, and that also needs to be talked about.

Dr. Paul Long, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, and has practiced on Hilton Head for thirty-eight years. He is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences medical school in Chicago and served residencies in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Thursdays T International Arms Control: What is it? Why do we have it?

How does it work? Does it make us safer?

October 12: This session will provide an overview of arms control covering nuclear, chemical, biological, and conventional weaponry. You'll learn how arms control agreements are negotiated and implemented, with an emphasis on verification.

October 19: The U.S. currently is party to a number of bilateral and multilateral arms control regimes limiting nuclear, chemical, and biological capabilities. The discussion will include Iraq, recent Syrian use of chemical weapons, as well as U.S./Russian nuclear proliferation control agreements.

October 26: Verification is the key to success, including comprehensive data exchanges and on-site inspections. The instructor will draw on his personal involvement as an analyst, inspector, and trainer.

November 2: Putting it all together, we will discuss the 2015 Iran Nuclear Agreement and the situation with North Korea.

John Gilbert is a retired Air Force Colonel with over forty years of experience in nuclear and missile technology, strategic operations, and arms control. He currently conducts training courses for the U.S. Department of Defense and the International Atomic Energy Agency which conducts inspections in Iran under the 2015 nuclear agreement.

T Historic Cemeteries of Hilton Head Island Using a PowerPoint presentation, Kathy Smith will show pictures of the sixteen cemeteries on Hilton Head. You will learn the locations of these graveyards and the fascinating histories behind them.

Kathy Smith taught school for thirty years in Brookville, PA, retiring in 2007. She has a bachelor of science in elementary education and a master of science in communications.

T Memory Matters: Be Ahead of the Game This is an introduction to the 2017 expanded vision of Memory Matters. What's new? A focus on YOUR brain health and wellness, in addition to their daily programs, community education, and support.

Debbie Anderson has thirty-five years of experience in healthcare education. Her areas of expertise include oncology, dementia, and hospice care.

Daniel Lentz is an instructor for the Purple Angel Project. He is a Qualified Dementia Care Specialist.

Thursdays T The European Struggle to Settle North America In the early 16th century, three great European rivals--England, France, and Spain-- claimed large tracts of land in North America. However, each knew that claiming the land was not enough. To hold territory and keep others out of it, a country needed to establish a permanent settlement.

Thus began the long struggle to colonize North America. It would take many failures before each country was successful and St. Augustine, Jamestown and Quebec were established.

This course is based on the book The European Struggle to Settle North America, Colonizing Attempts

by England, France and Spain, 1521-1608.

October 12: Early Spanish and French Settlements in the Southeastern United States.

October 19: The Spanish Settlement at Santa Elena on Parris Island - Meet a settler from Santa Elena.

October 26: English Settlements in North America - Meet Joan Pierce, an honest, industrious woman from the James Towne settlement.

November 2: French Settlements in Canada November 9: Why were St. Augustine, Jamestown, and Quebec successful?

Margaret Pickett is a graduate of the University of Maryland, a former teacher who worked for twenty years in museum education in Williamsburg, VA. She is also a Living History Interpreter who has researched and developed programs based on the lives of prominent 16th, 17th, and 18th century women. She is the coauthor of the book on which the class is based.

Thursdays T Let's Get Physical II Back by popular demand, LLHHI is excited to again offer a course in strength and flexibility training for our members at Breakthrough Fitness Gym. Your instructors feel strongly that mind and body exercises are essential to staying active both mentally and physically. Strengthening exercises, when done properly and through the full range of motion, increase a person’s flexibility and balance and decrease the likelihood and severity of falls.

The course will include four sessions of one hour each. There is no extra charge to participate.

Stacey Saritelli is fitness director at Breakthrough Fitness Center on Hilton Head. She is an ACE/AFPA personal trainer who specializes in strength training and lifestyle weight management.

T Hilton Head Island and the Civil War:

Before, During, and After

Hilton Head played a pivotal role during the Civil War. In this session, we will cover the Sea Island pre-war cotton aristocracy vital to the South’s economy, the Union capture of the island, and its importance as a coaling station in maintaining the blockade of southern shipping. This presence led to the Port Royal Experiment (Penn School and Mitchelville). And finally, we will discuss the post Civil War Gullah culture and the Hunting Club Era that helped shape the island as we know it today.

Ford Hutchinson is a history docent for the Coastal Discovery Museum.

Fridays T Great Decisions October 20: Conflict in the South China Sea – The South China Sea is a locus for competing territorial claims, with China the most vocal claimant. Beijing's interest has intensified disputes with other countries in the region while increasing its naval presence. Preventing tensions from boiling over is a matter of careful diplomacy.

October 27: U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum – Despite the so-called "energy revolution", the U.S. is by no means disentangled from foreign dependence and global trends.

November 3: Latin America's Political Pendulum – Dramatic economic and political crises have recently occurred in Brazil and Venezuela. The new administration must look beyond the neoliberal model of the 1990s and develop an approach to relations to fit the 21st century November 10: The Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan – The U.S. has conducted military operations in Afghanistan continuously since 9/11. The new administration has a choice: maintain the status quo, reverse the Obama administration drawdown, or get out completely. Is it a no-win situation in for us? And what of Pakistan’s role in the conflict? Ally or adversary?

Dr. Isam Sakati has led the Great Decisions discussion for the last ten years.

T An Invitation to Read and Write Poetry With Audre Allison’s guidance, you will read and write poetry, attempting to form a relationship with the sounds and rhythms of the engaging and elegant language of the form.

You will try some of the devices and techniques used by successful poets, remembering that in poetry we search to express the inexpressible . . . the known in a new way. There is no rule book.

And finally, we hope you will become inspired to share the poetry you write with the class.

Fridays T The Early Films of Alfred Hitchcock Join Jim Van Cleave as he presents six Hitchcock films that shaped an astounding career. We begin this series with the first film to combine the classic Hitchcock trademarks of a beautiful woman (usually blond) in peril, a hero falsely accused, unusual camera tricks, and, of course, a cameo role by Hitchcock himself. We finish with what most critics agree is the finest of his creations, 1958’s Vertigo, an almost flawless thriller with the Master of Suspense at the peak of his powers.

October 13: The Lodger: A Story of London Fog - 1927 starring Ivor Novello and June Tripp in a retelling of the Jack the Ripper saga. Someone is savagely stabbing blond showgirls. Is it our mysterious lodger?

October 20: The 39 Steps - 1935 starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

One of Hitch’s earliest espionage films involving a harrowing, often comedic, chase from London to the Scottish Highlands and back again.

October 27: Sabotage - 1936 starring Sylvia Sidney and Oscar Homolka. Set in 1936 London, the film foreshadows the terrorist bombings of today. In it, Hitch examines the thin veneer of security that shadows our everyday lives.

November 3: Suspicion - 1941 starring Joan Fontaine and Cary Grant.

Hitchcock is now working in America. Is dashing spendthrift Johnnie Aysgarth trying to murder his dowdy wife, Lina Laidlaw?

November 10: The Wrong Man - 1956 starring Henry Fonda and Vera Miles.

Hitchcock explores the impact on the life of an ordinary, decent man accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Very noir. Very Kafkaesque.

November 17: Vertigo - 1958 starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. A beautiful blonde, a flawed hero, obsession, and of course murder, all come together in this masterpiece of suspense. Hitch never did it better.

Saturdays T Understanding Today’s Economy and the

Global Economic Outlook

Every incoming administration since the 1930's has faced serious economic conditions affecting the mood and sentiment of its citizens. Recently, globalization has spawned a new set of economic realities in America, among them changes in employment patterns, the loss of manufacturing jobs, and new educational requirements. These issues will be analyzed by senior financial executives and a political scientist to help us understand the relationship between popular movements and the overall outlook for both the domestic and global economy.

October 21: The Past, Present and Future of Globalization – The economy of the United States and its relationships to the international community is best understood within the context of an everevolving global economy. What are the factors to be considered in the present political environment?

Yale Ferguson is a Professorial Fellow in the Rutgers University-Newark Division of Global Affairs. Among his latest books co-authored with Richard W. Mansbach (Iowa State) are Globalization: The Return of Borders to a Borderless World and Remapping Global Politics-History’s Revenge and Future Shock.

October 28: Economic Factors in the Rise of Populism – The United States, Great Britain, and a number of other western democracies have experienced a shift in political outcomes which some have characterized as populism. What are the main factors that have caused this change in the "will of the people"? And, what effects might this have on the global economy?

William "Bill" Snider has held CEO and CFO management positions in international and domestic banking. He holds the CFA designation and has been an adjunct faculty member at Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin.

November 4: International Banking and Trade Issues – This lecture will discuss the origins of the international banking system and why this system is the subject of many myths and conspiracies.

Further, this discussion will delve into the area of international trade and recent trends towards protectionism through renewed tariffs, renegotiated trade agreements, and currency manipulation.

Benjamin “Ben” Kinnas held senior managerial positions in Asian/Pacific regions for some three decades.

He served as chair of the Financial Services Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.

November 11: Global Economic Outlook – The global equity investment advisor’s principal role is to make good judgment calls that keep his/her clients’ portfolio trending upward; if not upward, at least stable. What domestic and global conditions must be considered in developing the final strategic position behind which he stakes both his future and the futures of his clients?

Scott Wren is a Senior Global Equity Strategist for Wells Fargo Investment Institute located in St. Louis.

With more than thirty years’ experience in financial services, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas and a Master of Finance from Saint Louis University.

How Will the United Nations Meet the Challenges of the Future?

At a time when unprecedented crises are at play on the international stage, both the President of the U.S. and the newly elected Secretary General of the U.N. took office in January of 2017. At the same time, Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, took office as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Ambassador Nancy Soderberg will discuss these issues and pose the question, “as the U.S. confronts global challenges, can we go it alone or will we continue to need partners like the U.N?” Ambassador Nancy Soderberg is an American foreign policy strategist who held senior level positions in the Clinton administration, including Deputy National Security Advisor and Alternate Representative to the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador. She resides in Jacksonville, Florida, where she is a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of North Florida, Director of UNF's Public Service Leadership Program, and President and CEO of Soderberg Global Solutions, an international consulting firm.
