Social networks make us less intelligent Being connected to our Twitter and Facebook profiles at every moment makes us seem more intelligent, but it actually reduces our intellectual capabilities, according to a new study published by the Royal Society. Social networks are a primary source of information for many users, even if some studies affirm that we read the news unintentionally and that in reality we are always connected in order to know what our acquaintances are doing. Be it by chance or not, reading articles published by our contacts keeps us current with what´s going on, but doesn´t sharpen our intellect, since the information overload that we expose ourselves to through the networks reduces our concentration, contemplation, and reflection.

To arrive at this conclusion, the researchers interviewed a group of 100 university students divided into 5 groups who used different social networks assigned at random. Half of the volunteers were connected with everyone else, whereas the other half didn´t have any type of connection with the rest. The scientists submitted the participants a series of questions based on

analytical reasoning to test their intuitive level. The results showed that this first half was more prone to reproducing the correct answers of their contacts than coming up with their own answers. The social networks helped the volunteers choose better answers, but exempted them from applying their own analytical reasoning.

Back pain. The use of tight clothing leads to restricted body movements, making muscles and vertebrae overwork when carrying out routine tasks that shouldn´t demand great effort if we wear normal clothes.

In order to avoid these types of problems in the body, we should choose loose-fitting clothing that we feel more comfortable in and not limit the normal movements or functions of our body.

A: Yes. First of all, know that you are not alone. Many people suffer from claustrophobia or other disorders that make it difficult for them to consider getting an MRI scan (which involves lying on a table in a tube-like device and staying still for a period of time). Some people (particularly those with claustrophobia, those who are

Do you know what mecafilia is?

All car lovers come to grow fond of their automobile. We always want to keep it impeccable and we get angry when we see that it has a scratch or stain on the upholstery or body. This is completely normal, but… have you arrived at thinking that there is nothing more important in your life than your car? Did you know that this extreme love is known as mecafilia?

Mecafilia is a disorder that leads you to fall in love with your vehicle to the point of feeling possession and jealousy over it. The most famous case known to date is that of a Washington citizen named Edward Smith, who has been in love with his cars for more than 15 years.

He is currently infatuated with a Volkswagen Beetle who he affectionately calls Vanilla, although he has had other girlfriends such as a 73 Opel GT and a 93 Ford Ranger Splash.

According to experts this inclination happens when people don´t find pleasure in conventional relationships, and therefore look for another source of satisfaction. It is said that mecafilia also includes relationships with other machines such as helicopters, motorcycles, or planes.

(The Orphanage) (2007): Although this is a horror movie, the Orphanage manages to move the audience with the story of “Laura”, a woman who loses her adopted son “Simón” and finds herself wrapped up in a series of paranormal games that make her lose everything.

Where do fortune cookies come from?

Known by Anglo-Saxons as fortune cookies, these treats come in the shape of a small empanada and are served in Chinese restaurants in North America as a dessert for after meals. Diners must break them in order to read the paper that carries inside it some sort of advice or prediction. Some fortune cookies also announce lottery results or varying jokes related with the future.

Although many believe that these cookies were invented in China, a country known for having created numerous recipes and new foods, this is not the case. Only recently have they been introduced in restaurants in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Peking in order to please tourists. In 1993, Wonton Food Company, the food enterprise from New York, began making them in the Asian country, but not without announcing on the label “Genuine American Fortune Cookies”. It seems to be that it was the Japanese Makoto Hagiwara, from the Japanese Tea Garden of the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (California) who had the idea in 1909. In 1960, Edward Louie, owner of the Lotus Fortune Cookie Company of the same city, designed a machine that inserted paper with a lucky message in the recently baked 7-centimeter cookies and closed them automatically. Today fortune cookies are made in different flavors and sizes with these simple ingredients: sugar, wheat flour, eggs, yeast, salt, and sesame or palm oil.

Las conocidas por los anglosajones como fortune cookies son unas galletas con forma de empanadillas que se sirven en los restaurantes chinos de Norteamérica como postre después de las comidas. Los comensales tienen que romperlas para leer el papel que llevan dentro con algún consejo o predicción. Algunas galletas de la suerte también anuncian resultados de lotería o diversas bromas relacionadas con el futuro.

Aunque hay quien cree que estas cookies se inventaron en China, país conocido por haber creado numerosas recetas y nuevos alimentos, no es así. Solo recientemente han sido introducidas en los restaurantes de Hong Kong, Shanghái o Pekín para complacer a los turistas. En 1993, la empresa de comida de Nueva York Wonton Food Company empezó a fabricarlas en el país asiático, pero anunciándolas en la etiqueta como “Genuine American Fortune Cookies”.

Parece ser que fue el nipón Makoto Hagiwara, del Jardín Japonés del Té del Golden Gate, en San Francisco (California), quien tuvo la ocurrencia en 1909.
