It has always been said that women are more intuitive than men. But is there really such a thing as women´s intuition? A study carried out by researchers from the Universities of Granada, Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona, and Middlesex University in London, and published in the magazine Psychoneuroendocrinology, clears things up for us.

The team of scientists confirms that women are more intuitive than men due to a biological component (related to less prenatal exposure to testosterone in the womb) that predisposes them to being more intuitive and less reflexive than men throughout their lives.

Men receive more prenatal testosterone and consequently are more daring and less sympathetic than women.

Careful with grilled meat To all of you barbecue lovers this study will not be very pleasing, but it is the conclusion reached by a team of researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, whose results have been published in the magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In arriving at this decision the scientists supervised the cognitive health of laboratory rats that consumed foods with high levels of advanced glycation end products (PGA) that are associated with the worsening of these two sicknesses. Above all, they ate red meat cooked on the grill. The study was also done with healthy adults over the age of 60 during a period of 9 months, and they divided them into two groups: one group with low PGA levels and another with high levels.

The results of both experiments determined that the subjects with high levels of PGA in their blood developed cognitive deterioration and demonstrated signs of resistance to the insulin, confirming that the consumption of grilled meats can increase the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer´s and diabetes. The individuals with low levels of AGE in their blood remained healthy.

Investigators delve into the fact that it is not only the glycemic load of the food that causes the increased risk of these diseases, but also the way they are cooked. So, meats processed by heat become a health threat to humans.

To resolve this problem researchers suggest leaving behind the barbecues and going back to cooking the old fashioned way, with less heat and more water.

This doesn´t mean that you shouldn´t eat these foods, but you should cook them in a healthier way.

Cuidado con la carne a la brasa A los aficionados a las barbacoas este estudio no les hará mucha gracia, pero es la conclusión a la que ha llegado un equipo de investigadores de la facultad de medicina de Icahn en el Monte Sinaí de Nueva York (EEUU) y cuyos resultados han sido publicados en la revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Para llegar a esta resolución los científicos supervisaron la salud cognitiva de ratones de laboratorio que consumieron alimentos con altos niveles de productos finales de glicación avanzada (PGA) que se asocian con el empeoramiento de estas dos enfermedades; es decir, comieron sobre todo carne roja cocinada a la brasa/parrilla. El estudio se probó también con adultos sanos de más de 60 años durante un período de nueve meses, a los que dividieron en dos grupos: un grupo con bajos niveles de PGA y el otro con niveles altos.

Los resultados de ambos experimentos determinaron que los sujetos con altos niveles de PGA en la sangre desarrollaron deterioro cognitivo y demostraron signos de resistencia a la insulina, confirmando así que la ingesta de carnes a la brasa o carnes a la parrilla puede aumentar el riesgo de enfermedades como el Alzheimer y la diabetes. Los individuos con bajos niveles de AGE en la sangre permanecieron sanos.

Los investigadores ahondan en que no sólo es la carga glucémica de los alimentos la que provoca el aumento del riesgo de estas enfermedades, sino también la forma en la que se cocinan. Así pues, las carnes procesadas por calor se convierten en una amenaza para la salud del ser humano. Para solucionar este problema los investigadores aconsejan dejar de lado las barbacoas y volver a cocinar los alimentos a la antigua usanza, con menos calor y más presencia de agua. No se trata de no tomar estos alimentos sino de cocinarlos de una forma más saludable.

Si ponemos como ejemplo una posible misión a Marte de 1.000 días de duración, el riesgo añadido de padecer cáncer en los hombres sería entre el 1 y el 19%; en las mujeres, este porcentaje supone casi el doble. El por qué este porcentaje se ve aumentado en las mujeres es sencillo: por poseer órganos sensibles a esta enfermedad, como son los ovarios y los pechos. Este hecho lo convierte en imperativo para limitar las misiones espaciales en las que puedan participar astronautas mujeres.

Para paliar este problema la Unión Europea puso en marcha en enero de 2013 un nuevo proyecto, llamado Space Radiation Superconductive Shield (SR2S), que tiene como objetivo resolver el problema de la protección contra las radiaciones del espacio para todos los astronautas, sin tener el cuenta el sexo.

El proyecto pretende construir un blindaje superconductor que creará un campo magnético en torno a la nave espacial. Este campo magnético será 3.000 veces superior al del planeta Tierra y será capaz de desviar las partículas ionizantes.

Entre los organismos implicados en SR2S se encuentran el Instituto Nacional de Física Nuclear de Italia (INFN), el CERN de Suiza o la Comisión de Energía Atómica y Energías Alternativas de Francia (CEA).

CASE OF THE WEEK CASO DE LA SEMANA CASE OF WOMEN HIT BY CAR SETTLES FOR CASO DE UNA MUJER GOLPEADA POR UN CARRO $50,000.00 $50,000.00

The case of the week deals with a lady that was struck by a vehicle and sustained a knee injury. We are going to call this individual Linda in order to protect her identity.

Initially Linda did not think her injury to her knee was that serious. It was a little inflamed and she felt some pain in the knee but she thought it would go away.

However after a week or two of the pain not going away she went to see an orthopedic who recommended an x-ray and some physical therapy. After the x-ray and the physical therapy the pain would not go away so the doctor prescribed an MRI. The MRI indicated that she had a small tear in her ligament. As a result of the MRI finding Linda decided to undergo minor surgery to her knee to attempt to correct the tear. The surgery was a success and her knee recovered. She received additional physical therapy after the surgery to the point where she was able to return to work. In total Linda missed approximately 6 weeks of work.

Linda retained our office approximately 2 weeks after her accident. The defendant’s insurance company initially had no offer for Linda and substantial work was required. However once everything was verified with the insurance company including providing authorizations, medical records and other such discovery it became apparent to the insurance company that the case had to be settled.

In less than a year the case we were able to settle Linda’s case for the amount of $50,000.00. Linda was a very appreciated of the work performed of our office as a result has referred other family members and friends to our office.

Thanks to all the hard work Linda has very bright future ahead of her and her future is secure.

Each case is unique in facts and the results of a past case are no assurance of a result of a future case but we certainly are glad we were able to help our client in this case.

El caso de esta semana se trata de una mujer que fue golpeada por un carro y tuvo heridas en una rodilla. La llamaremos Linda para proteger su identidad.

Al principio Linda no pensó que su herida de la rodilla era tan seria. Estaba un poquito hinchada y sentía algún dolor pero ella pensó que se le iba a ir el dolor. Sin embargo después de una semana o dos del dolor no quitarse decidió ir a un ortopédico quien le recomendó terapia y una radiografía.

Después de la radiografía y la terapia el dolor no se iba el doctor decidió por un MRI y resulto que tenia un ligamento dañado.

Gracias al resultado del MRI, Linda tuvo cirugía para corregir el daño. La

cirugía fue un éxito y ella recupero su rodilla. Ella recibió terapia adicional y pudo volver al trabajo.

En total Linda perdió aproximadamente 6 semanas de trabajo.

Linda cogió los servicios de nuestra oficina alrededor de 2 semanas después del accidente.

La compañía de seguro del acusado al principio no tenía ninguna oferta y mucho trabajo tuvimos que hacer. Sin embargo, una vez que todo estuvo verificado por la compañía de seguro incluyendo autorizaciones, records médicos, etc, la compañía de seguro contraria reviso todos los documentos e hizo una oferta para cerrar el caso. En menos de un ano pudimos cerrar el caso de Linda por la cantidad de $50,000.00. Linda es-

taba muy agradecida por el trabajo hecho en nuestra oficina, y a referido familiares y amigos a nuestra oficina.

Federal laws that prohibit work discrimination are: • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1064, prohibits discrimination in employment because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin • The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), protects men and women who essentially perform the same job in the same establishment from wage discrimination based on sex • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), protects individuals who are 40 years old or older • Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibit discrimination in the workplace against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in local and state governments • Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibit the discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government • The Civil Rights Act of 1991, which among other things provides monetary compensation for damages in cases of intentional discrimination at work.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) implements all of these laws. The EEOC also provides supervision and coordination of all rules, practices, and policies of federal equal employment opportunities.

Other federal laws, that are not carried out by the EEOC, also prohibit discrimination and retaliation against federal employees and job applicants. The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA) contains diverse prohibitions, known as prohibited practices with staff (in English) that are designed to promote complete fairness in actions that involve federal personnel. Section 2302 of Title 5 of the U.S. Code: The CSRA prohibits any employee who has the authority to take certain actions with respect to discriminating staff, employees, or job applicants because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability. It also stipulates that certain actions directed to the staff cannot be based on qualities or conducts that adversely affect the performance of the employee, such as civil status or political affiliation. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has interpreted that the prohibition of behavior discrimination includes sexual orientation discrimination. The CSRA also prohibits retaliation against federal employees or job applicants for acting as informants or exercising their right to appeal, complaint, or claim. The CSRA is executed as much by the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) as it is by the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB).

Juan was working in a company for two years.

He was very serious, dedicated, and responsible with his obligations. He arrived to work on time and was very proud of never having received a warning. The manager picked up the phone and called Fernando. When Fernando arrived the manager gave him the same instructions that he gave to Juan, and in 10 minutes he was back again.
