Drive Your Bike -

Minnesota has dozens of League Cycling Instructors (LCI) who teach classes across the state. From short lunch sessions to the nine hour Traffic Skills 101, the core message is the same. Drive your bike. Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. FOLLOW THE LAW Your safety and the image of bicyclists depend on you. You have the same rights and duties as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs, ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane that serves your destination. BE PREDICTABLE Make your intentions clear to motorists and other road users. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes. BE VISIBLE Photo courtesy of John Hardy Ride where drivers can see you; wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red rear light and reflectors at night or when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t ride on sidewalks. THINK AHEAD Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other bicyclists will do next watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes, and utility covers. Cross railroad tracks at right angles. RIDE READY Check: tires for sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release wheel levers are closed. Carry repair and emergency supplies. Always wear a helmet.

Cycling Jerseys Here is a little secret that not every rider knows – You don’t need to wear a cycling jersey to ride a bike. Why then should you buy one? Simple answer: Comfort.

Ride With Me

Cycling jerseys are made of moisture moving fabrics that will pull perspiration off your body and move it to the outside of the garment where it can evaporate quickly. Additionally, cycling jerseys are cut to follow the natural lines of your body while riding, they use grippers to stay in place as you move around the bicycle and many options also have pockets to help you carry things like food, phones, or tools. A lot of options also include some reflective features making you more visible while out on the road. All together these features make you more comfortable and safer on your bike. More great news! - Cycling clothing is no longer all skin tight. Jerseys are now made in every conceivable fit, ensuring you can find one that feels good. When trying on a jersey, consider a few things. First, when standing bolt upright, the jersey will feel short in the front and long in the back. It’s important to lean over a bit and try to replicate your cycling position. If the jersey still feel too short/long it is probably a good idea to try a new size or fit. Second, from totally synthetic to purely natural, and every combination in between, jerseys use different materials to create something that is functional and comfortable. Costs will vary widely based on the material and complexity of the construction.

Biking Comfort

Common Discomforts Riding a bicycle is one & ofFixes

the most enjoyable hobbies available. Don’t let little nagging annoyances take away from your great ride. Learn the causes and fixes to cycling’s most basic discomforts. Before you ride, setup your bike to fit you. We encourage you to find a friend to help look at you on your bicycle and adjust your fit. If no one is available, use your phone and take video of you sitting and riding your bicycle. Look at the two riders Above. The rider on the right is in for some sore days. The excessive amount of bend to his legs is making his knee support all his effort at a very acute angle, which puts excess strain on the joint. His leaning over means his upper body weight is supported only by his lower back and arms, which results in a sore back, shoulder, arms, and painful hands. His low saddle overworks his quadriceps and doesn’t engage his gluteus or calf muscles, and his head is positioned so low he must crane his neck up aggressively just to see. This will result in a sore neck. The rider on the left is bending his leg at a wider angle which results in proper leg extension while pedaling, and incorporates all his muscles (helps with efficiency). To set saddle height: sit on your bike, place your heel on your pedal, and rotate the pedals backward. You want your leg completely extended while keeping your hips level (at the bottom of the pedal stroke your leg should be just barely locked out with your heel touching the pedal). If you find you aren’t getting complete extension raise your saddle, but lower it if you’re tilting your hip to reach the bottom of the pedal stroke. The rider on the left has more support as well. He is using his bone structure to support himself by adjusting his bar so his back is at an angle over 45 degrees from the ground. His arms extend at a 90-degree angle from his back with a very small bend to the elbow. He has adjusted his grips and controls to be in place when he reaches out to take the bar. He does not need to turn his wrist up or down to shift or brake. The rider on the left also has a very comfortable position for his head. He can see around and in front naturally without needing to stretch. Once you have a comfortable setup, you should experience hours upon hours of painless riding. If discomfort continues, then consult with your local bike shop. They are trained in advanced personal fitting techniques and can offer insights into potential causes of discomfort.

Top Off Your Game

Planning Your Trip

Congratulations, you have decided to take the leap and sign up for a bike event. It could be a small charity ride, your first triathlon, or a multi-day bike tour, whatever the ride there are a few things you should know before leaving your front door. Pack heavyI’m not encouraging you to bring everything you own, but be sure to pack for all kinds of situations. Bring a jacket, arm warmers, knee warmers, and rain gear for changing weather conditions. Be sure to bring extra tubes, chain lube, hex keys, rags, and a floor pump to keep your bike running. Don’t forget food (for pre, during, and post ride), water, and bottles to keep you going strong. Know your routeMost events will share a map of the route in advance. Print a paper version of it, just in case your digital solution fails. If you are making your own route create a cue sheet. On a cue sheet, each turn of the ride is listed by street and distance for quick reference. Random goodsEven if you plan and pack well, unexpected things happen. Be sure to bring a zip lock bag (preferably big enough to house you phone to keep it dry), a small bit of Duct tape, travel tissues, 4 quarters, and a Ten dollar bill. With those items, you can protect things from the elements, repair the unrepairable, buy ice cream, and do a host of other things. Take care of your babyA mechanical problem on a long trip is the worst. Avoid any issues by first cleaning your bike thoroughly, then taking it in for service. Having your bike running in tip top shape makes the ride that much more enjoyable. Think of it as an adventureOf all the “things” you bring with you, be sure to leave your stress at home. No ride has ever gone according to plan. In fact, some of my most enjoyable rides were the ones where everything went wrong! Enjoy the journey and stay positive.

Digital Gadgets

Riding with a Theme Song There’s nothing like your favorite playlist to keep you pedaling in high spirits even through the toughest rides. But space is limited while riding a bike, so here a few of the most portable options.

Earbuds It all comes down to personal preference, but the most common ways people listen is through earbuds. They do a great job because they fit snugly into your ear (eliminating a lot of wind noise), are light and collapsible, and don’t need an additional power source. The downside of earbuds is they can limit your ability to hear your surroundings. We take for granted how much our auditory sense contributes to our perception of the world. If you want to use earbuds it’s best you use just one. Most media devices will allow you to shift all sound to one earbud, leaving your other ear open and keeping you safe.

Speakers Another simple option is to use the speakers in your phone and an on-bike mount. This option works okay, but sound quality and battery life end up being an issue. Another popular choice is to use a portable speaker. Lots of riders are find it easy to mount a speaker to their bike or person. This option maintains good sound quality, while allowing you to hear the world around you. The volume can also be adjusted so that those out of your immediate vicinity won’t hear your choice in boyband.

Rock Out Responsibly Whatever you choose, remember to be responsible. Be responsible to yourself by not eliminating your ability to hear the world around you, and responsible to others who want to enjoy all the sights and sounds uninterrupted.

Accessorize Your Bike

Saddles

A comfortable saddle is the most important component of enjoying your next bike ride. Finding the right one can be easy with a few tips! A bigger saddle is not always Curved Seat more comfortable, shape determines how comfortable a saddle is. Your riding position has a lot to do with what shape works best for you. With that in mind try to resist the urge to just grab Ischial tuberosity any seat in the store until you Pubic Arch determine what kind of position you ride in. Someone who leans forward toward the bars a great deal rotates their hips forward, and rest on the pubic arch (see figure). Someone who sits more upright with their hips rotated backward, rests on their sit bones (technically called, Ischial Flat Seat Tuberosity). Some saddles are designed for riders that sit on their sit bones, while others on the pubic arch. Because of this fact, you will need to find a saddle that matches your riding position. The easiest way to figure out which saddle might work for you is to view the saddle from behind (if it were on the bike you could look down the length of the saddle and see the handlebar). Is the saddle shaped in a constant curve from right to left, with no flat sections? This saddle is probably best for those who rest on their pubic arch. If the saddle has a flat section, it is more geared to riders who rest on their sit bones. Once you find a few saddles that match your riding position, it’s a good idea to try them out (Most local bike shops offer some sort of service for saddle fitting). Any new saddle will feel unfamiliar at first, it’s best to install the saddle on your bike and take a few minutes and pedal around. Focus on how you are resting on the saddle. It’s a good sign if you can rest in one spot comfortably. You should feel supported evenly without any one localized point of pressure. If you find yourself shifting around frequently to find a good spot, that saddle probably doesn’t fit too well.

Helpful Bike Tools & Supplies

Keep Your Bike Ready-to-Ride Like any other mechanical device, your bicycle needs routine maintenance to ensure it’s safe to ride when you need it. Here are a few tips to put you on the right track!

Tip 1: Stay Away from the Hose Every moving part on your bicycle needs lubrication to function properly. A hose forces water in and lubricant out, leaving your bicycle susceptible to corrosion and excess wear. Instead, fill a bucket with warm, soapy water (Dawn dish detergent works well) and use a large sponge or washcloth to clean all the parts of your bicycle. From top to bottom rinse it all off with fresh water, and let the bicycle air dry.

Tip 2: Focusing on the Drivetrain If you have a particularly dirty drivetrain (the gears, chain, and the little pulley wheels on your derailleur) and want to get it sparkling you will need the following: • Degreaser • A stiff bristled brush • Rubber gloves • Protective eyewear

Tip 3: Reapply Lubricant Now that the bicycle is clean, reapply lubricant. The only places that need lube are the chain and possibly cables. Step 1: To lube the chain, prop your bicycle up so you can freely backpedal. While backpedaling, coat the chain evenly with lubricant. Step 2: Once the chain is well lubricated, fold a rag around the chain, backpedal, and remove all the excess lubricant you can (the chain will feel almost dry to the touch). Note: If you feel you need to lube the cables, apply lubricant in small doses, where the cable enters the housing. Cycle the gears, or squeeze the brakes until capillary action transports the lube into the cable housing.

Having a clean and properly lubricated bicycle is essential to making sure your bike is ready to go when you’re ready to ride.

Come Clean

Leave Clean

Minnesota has hundreds of miles of state managed trails and many more on other public lands. There is a strong correlation between invasive plants and Minnesota’s trail system and it threatens our way of life. Outdoor enthusiasts can help protect the places we love by reporting what we see and making sure we’re not giving harmful invasive a ride on our gear. Here’s how:

Clean Your Gear Before and After Recreating

Have you ever noticed new weeds popping up along your driveway, or an interesting moth in your house? There’s a good chance they came home with you from somewhere else. To avoid spreading harmful plants, earth worms and forest pests it’s important that you clean your gear before and after heading outdoors, preferably before getting on the road.

Stay on Designated Trails and Roads

Soil disturbance allows invasive plants to gain a foothold in new environments. Then once established, invasive plants can move into native communities where they can outcompete native plants and disrupt wildlife habitat. So do your best to stay on designated trails and roads.

Use Certified or Local Wood

Plant pests can move in firewood. A good example is the emerald ash borer that is killing ash trees across the country. Weed seed can move in hay and other feed. A good example is spotted knapweed that was spread in contaminated hay. Once established knapweed exudes a toxic chemical from its roots that inhibits native plants. We can avoid spreading these pests by using only certified or locally produced firewood and feed.

If You See It, Report It

We need the extra eyes and hears of outdoor enthusiasts to locate and address harmful species. Reporting is easy using the free mobile application created by EDDMapS.org. The application includes lots of information on identification and will upload your data via wifi. Visit the website, find out what occurs in your area, and download the application to your smart or tablet.

Spread the Word, Not the Problem

Pass it on. Let your friends and family know how they can help protect the places 2/16/17 9:58 AM they love.red-bike-4.5x1.8125.pdf Share you passion and 1create a legacy.

COME CLEAN. LEAVE CLEAN.

Give Invasive Species The Brush Off.

What Bike Is Right for Me?

Like everything else in the world today, there are no shortages of choices when it comes to bikes. So how do you figure out what is right for you? Step one, determine where you want to ride. Typical choices are on the road, path/trail, and off road with many subdivisions of each. Step two, how frequently do you plan on riding? Bicycle costs range from around $300 up into the tens of thousands. The most basic models use less durable materials like plastics in the shifting components and mild steel rather than stronger alloys. As the prices increase, stronger metals replace less durable materials, lending to a bicycle that will hold up better to frequent use. Step three, why are you riding? Fun and fitness, speed and adrenaline, or competition all put different strains on a bicycle. Be sure to match your riding style with the bike you get. Now it’s time for some research. What kind of bike do you need? There are three main categories of bicycles, but each one has its own subcategories as well. For those, it’s best to visit your local bike shop. Mountain Bikes Mountain Bikes are designed for off road use. They sport the largest tires of any category and are equipped with suspension designed to keep the rider in control on rough trails. Mountain Bikes have low gearing so riders can pedal up steep grades of loose ground. A lot of riders enjoy the stability and position of a Mountain Bike for Path/Trail riding as well as true off road riding. Road Bicycles Designed with speed and efficiency in mind, Road Bikes are best suited on roads due to the small tire size. These bicycles are the lightest of the three categories. Some Road Bikes are equipped with flat handlebars, but most come with a drop bar. Many riders love the speed and lightweight of these bicycles. Path/Trail Bikes Path/Trail bikes are the largest volume of bicycles sold. These bicycles use an upright handlebar and a more comfortable seating position. The tires range from something narrow (like a Road Bike) to as wide as a Mountain Bike. Some are also fitted with suspension designed for comfort rather than control. While not as quick as a Road Bike, these bikes offer great efficiency on longer bike tours.

PREPARING FOR A A triathlon is a race that includes swimming, biking and running. Training for a triathlon needs to include conditioning in all three areas, however training sessions for a triathlete are not exactly like those done by swimmers, cyclists or runners individually. Swim Those who are new to competitive swimming should take lessons to develop a smooth, efficient stroke. With efficiency will come speed. Triathletes also must also get comfortable swimming in open water–so that means choppy water, without underwater markers for navigation. Practice swimming in open water as often as possible and practice staying on course. “Sighting” the course buoys is necessary to stay on track and preventing swimming farther than you need. Always swim safely and that means with a buddy. Bike This is the longest leg of the race so time in the saddle is very important. To improve cycling skills you will want to be comfortable on you seat in an efficient, aerodynamic position. It is highly recommended to get a professional bike fitting. On your bike practice pushing a moderate gear and hold a cadence of about 90 revolutions per minute (rpm). This will save your running legs! Run This is the most common discipline for injury, so always listen to your body and focus on the quality, not quantity, when it comes to your training runs. Hill running will help build running speed and prevent injuries. Make sure, if you are not already conditioned to run the distance, train for the distance before introducing speed training into your program. Bricks “Bricks” are workouts that practice transitions between two of the disciplines. Bike-to-run bricks are especially important because your legs can feel as though they’ve turned to concrete blocks when you get off your bike and try to run. Schedule at least one bike-to-run brick each week while training. This will help you get your body used to making the transition. Recovery Allow your body enough recovery time before each event. Training will make you slow, tired and more prone to injury without a recovery period. Have one day of complete rest per week to give your body a chance to recover. Every three to four weeks, cut your overall training intensity and volume in half. This “Recovery week” gives your mind and body a chance to rest and absorb all of the hard training you’ve done over the past month.

IMBA developed the “Rules of the Trail” to promote responsible and courteous conduct on shared-use trails. Keep in mind that conventions for yielding and passing may vary in different locations, or with traffic conditions. 1. Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal Wilderness.

2. Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in. 3. Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.

4. Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your

fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

5. Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses.

6. Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding and prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear. Search here for a www.IMBA.com Club to join and have fun!
