OBITUARIES

Jerry Mullaney 81 | Godfrey

June 2, 2023

Jerry Allen Mullaney of Godfrey, IL eagerly served his family and God all the days of his life. Having received a direct word from the Lord that he was a “Green Miler” he immediately set about folding his tent and waiting for his escort into heaven. He left this realm the morning of Friday, June 2, 2023 fully anticipating being greeted by his daughter, Kate (19762015) and his son, Casey (1974-2017).

Born November 20, 1941 in Berwyn, IL to Frank and Mary Mullaney, Jerry learned lessons about being responsible and in charge as he was big brother to Mike Mullaney (Renee) of Cary, IL. Jerry also worked diligently for his children and grandchildren: Maureen M. Williams (Robert Lowell); Casey A. Mullaney; M. Kate Fisher; Jordan M. Mullaney; Curtis J. Mullaney; Mason H. Williams; Benjamin C. Fisher; and Keira E. Fisher. Known as an inveterate storyteller, Jerry drew from principles and life lessons that were formed through a variety of work opportunities from a young age. Perseverance, along with time-and-money management skills came during early morning newspaper deliveries; the skill of dapper dressing and wise business practices were learned while working at Beguns Clothing Store during and after high school; the rewards of understanding pecking order and promotion were learned while perfecting the skills of product destruction testing at Reliable Electric; and the labor intensive job at Howard Concrete taught him the benefits of a strong body and the business perks of being the best hod carrier around northern IL counties. Then came the shift to bettering himself through advanced education as he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses. This brought the life lesson of humility while being poor and pumping gas between classes. College also brought him the lesson of being rich and favored as it is where

he met Diana, his wife of 58 years.

Finally came the freedom to be more of what he could be. Life’s work allowed his creative thinking to serve mankind through years of value-added engineering sales. At Illinois Tool Works he reveled in screws and fasteners that earned patents and are still used worldwide to save money and preserve the life of new or renovated buildings. Working with large wall system companies allowed his imagination to design and create ways to preserve beautiful old buildings. Always he demonstrated a way of thinking how to improve a product.

Jerry’s storytelling graced family dinners; fellowship with life-long friends and new acquaintances; Bible study ‘bristers’; fellow bowling team members; golfing buddies; and anyone he would meet and with whom he’d find a common spark of life.

In his later years, Jerry realized more than ever that Jesus purchased his life with a great price; and he began to understand the depth of his heavenly Father’s love from work lessons. Jerry worked at letting Holy Spirit help him become a “Pearl of Great Price.” He is appreciated and remembered as a faithful disciple and evangel of God’s story.

For those who want to honor Jerry’s life through a donation please consider his favorite sport of golf and its servant-leader position of Caddie. The discipline and protocol of the game, plus exposure to the colorful life experiences of the golfers he served, became fodder for many of Jerry’s life skills and stories. The three-week, summer Junior Golf Camp at Rolling Hills Golf Course can help young people learn important life lessons. Send donations to the attention of Rick Martin, Gen’l Mgr. - Rolling Hills Golf Course, 5801 Pierce Lane, Godfrey, IL 62035.

Fellow sojourners are welcome to honor Jerry’s life at a memorial party held at 1 pm on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at Godfrey Village Hall.

Bethalto farmers market begins fifth year

The growing popularity of farmers markets in communities around the country means the availability of fresh-grown produce and hand-crafted goods in addition to a wide variety of consumables ranging from kettle corn to locally grown honey, all brought to the markets by local residents. The Bethalto farmers market is now in its fifth year. The weekly market, held from 9am until 1pm every Sunday at Bethalto Central Park, is a popular venue with an everchanging array of vendors and goods.

Jane Ahasey is a board member of the Bethalto Spirit group and heads up the market. The Bethalto Spirit group is a nonprofit organization which sponsors civic events in Bethalto.

“The market has been a big success,” says Ahasey. She is happy to point out 75 percent of the vendors are from the town of Bethalto itself.

The list of vendors and products available is farranging. Kim Ilbery sells roasted ground coffee and coffee beans. Her business is called Koi Coffee. She has been attending the Bethalto farmers market since last summer. Information about the business can be found at koicoffee.co and on Facebook.

Jess Akroyd sells at the Bethalto market regularly. Her business, Ambicide Designs, makes unique handmade mugs, keychains, straw covers, car decals, coasters and car fresheners. She characterizes her booth as a craft emporium. The clever, creative items come in a variety of colors and styles. The business can be found on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Etsy. Ambicide Designs’ website is ambicidedesigns.com/ ambi-shop.

Custom Cup Creations’ booth at the market sells colorful, creative epoxy cups in a wide variety of designs. The owner, Ashlee Belcher, says she started her business five years ago and this is her fourth year at the Bethalto farmers market. She also creates epoxy pens, earrings and wall magnets. She notes that in addition to attending the farmers market, she will be at the Bethalto VFW on September 9 for the Foodstock event and also on September 22 and 23 for the veterans wall event there. Information about her business can be found on Facebook.

Locally grown honey is available at the market

from Thomas Cairns

He resides in the town of Dow and runs Dow On The Farm. “I’ve been producing honey for thirteen years,” he says. He explains he has learned a lot about bee keeping since starting and he currently has about 50 bee hives. His honey comes in a variety of dark and light types, depending on the type of flowers from which the different specific bee hives get their nectar. He can be reached by phone at 618-972-8282 or by email at deezel.222@gmail.com.

Another creative craft vender at the market is Jaden Devino. She runs JDEVDESIGNS. This is her first year at the market. She creates handmade jewelry. Her creations include earrings, necklaces, bracelets and phone charms. Several other vendors at the market sell fresh eggs and garden produce. Jeff Friedel runs Friedel’s Eggs and Produce. He also sells a wide variety of canned garden produce and sauces. He can be reached by phone at 618-979-0847.

“We’re always looking for additional vendors,” says Ahasey. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor or learning more about the market can call Ahasey directly at 618-240-2777 or get information on Facebook by searching for Bethalto Farmers Market.

The Bethalto farmers market will be held every Sunday through October 8, except Labor Day. Ahasey also notes the market will be hosted on October 1 at St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto in conjunction with the annual Fly In there. 3

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH Answer Midwest

The RiverBend Growth Association has chosen Alton-based Answer Midwest Inc. as its June 2023 Small Business of the Month award honoree.

With 48 employees currently, Answer Midwest first got its start 77 years ago. The company began as a local answering service working primarily with doctors as their after-hours exchange. Today, it is a specialized answering service that provides clients worldwide with exclusive telephone reception, supplemental existing telephone operations, and support for “after hours” business. Answer Midwest serves clientele 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our focus has always been on living the Golden Rule and providing good solid jobs in an excellent working environment in our local community,” explained Answer Midwest President Jen Schulz. “With that as our focus, our client base is now international in scale and includes every type of business imaginable.”

“With all the growth over the years, our commitment remains to our community and all those we get the honor of working alongside. We believe that these commitments are what has created a business that continues to grow and keep a strong reputation,” Schulz added.

@Answer Midwest

The Answer Midwest team has been recognized for the past 22 years as a repeat recipient of the coveted ATSI Award of Excellence.

“This is an international award for our industry that recognizes outstanding consistency in customer service,” said Schulz.

Five years ago, the company added to its office space located in the Honke Professional Building on Henry Street. Complete renovations were done to the office space to create an updated, beautiful place for their team to work together. Not long after those renovations were finished, however, the Answer Midwest team moved to working mostly remotely.

“A large part of what we do is provide emergency services.

Because of that, we did not have the mandate to work remotely,” Schulz said. “However, by going back to the Golden Rule, we knew that if we had the ability to make it happen then we needed to do all we could. Within a week we had every team member who had the ability to work remotely set up and running.”

“We continue to offer remote work to many of our team and it’s proven to be a real blessing for all of us,” she added. “While our office has changed, our focus on our team and our mission remains the same,” she said further. “It’s the heart of all that we do and every decision we make.”

Schulz was asked about how Answer Midwest the challenges it has faced over its 77-year history and its ability to survive. “I’ve never heard of a business that didn’t encounter challenges, it’s just part of it. In our industry, we are blessed that we are a valuable resource for businesses whether the economy is good or bad. When clients are short-staffed or when their business is slow, we are there to help fill the gaps and to provide an extra hand for far less than the cost of an employee, and when their business is booming and they need extra help we are there for that as well,” she said.

“Our real challenges come in technology and all the good and bad that it brings with it. Keeping up with technology has been great for our business, but as we all know technology brings with it its own setup issues. That’s just another part of business and something that we continue to build a strong team for.

Keasler Complex celebrates gymnasium grand re-opening

The Keasler Complex gym floor resurfacing is done.

The RiverBend Growth Association held a ribboncutting ceremony on Friday, June 2, to officially re-open the gymnasium with three pickleball courts. The gym floor was the original upon opening in 1979. Keasler Complex is located at 615 Third St., East Alton, and can be reached at

618-259-7411. Pickleball open gym resumes on Monday, June 5. Check out East Alton’s website for more information. Village officials in attendance were Mayor Darren Carlton; Tyler Lafferty, Park & Rec Superintendent; Lona Heeren, Physical Director; Jack Stalcup, Sports Programmer; Robin Carlton, Adult/Seniors Event

Team members are Ashley Heistand, Ericka Cobbs, Megan McMillian, Tessa Dierker, Rachelle Sutton, Tonya Rhodes, Chrissy Pollock, Cindy Levesque, owner Jen Schulz, Claire Cooley, Cori Grizzle, Holly Parker, Taylor Sunderland, Susan Hand, Luna Padeck, James

“Another big challenge is finding people who are a good representation of what we’re about as a company. Our bar is high, and the hiring pool is rough right now. As a result, there have been several times over the course of the years where we had to stop taking on new clients for a time because we were not willing to lower our standards regarding whom we added to the team.”

“We’ve had lots of great business opportunities over the years, but I believe our greatest opportunity is to be involved in the lives of our team. We have the amazing opportunity to genuinely care about people and to live that out in so many ways through this business. There are lots of call centers and answering services out there. We know we’re not going to be the best fit for every client, and we’re okay with that. We have a unique way of doing business; that uniqueness is part of what we’re most proud of,” Schulz said.

Anthony’s Property Maintenance

Answer Midwest has been involved in serving the community for nearly eight decades now as well, but Schulz noted that they have never publicized it. “We really do strive to do the right thing because it’s the right thing and not to draw attention or gain business. We also make it a point to support the efforts of our team and their kids and families. There is so much good going on in the community and we love to be a part of it in a myriad of ways.

“Our business has been a quiet part of the community for decades,” Schulz said further. “I would imagine that most everyone in the community has spoken with us at one time or another and never even knew it. That’s kind of how we operate, we just fly a little under the radar, always available, 24/7 helping callers and clients with a friendly voice. Our team likes helping people and people like talking to other people instead of machines. It’s a good feeling knowing that you’re contributing to the community that you love.”

Stop in for a

A few articles ago I wrote about my love of a good map. This time, let’s talk about road trips!

Last summer, we loaded up the car and headed south.

It would turn out to be the longest road trip for my family over the course of around 10 days, visiting friends and family in South Carolina, spending 4 days in Orlando for volleyball and sitting by the pool, and visiting family in Alabama on the way back home.

The previous record for a family road trip was a memoriable loop through Wisconsin and Minnesota.

We visited the Leinenkugel’s Brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, explored the waterfront in Duluth, stopped by a few lighthouses and waterfalls along Lake Superior, walked across the headwaters of the Mississippi River, kayaked on Lake Itasca, visited the Mall of America (one visit was enough for me) and took in a lumberjack show in the Wisconsin Dells.

Road trips aren’t intimidating to me. My girls have always been good travelers, since we’ve gone on road trips since they were babies. They were entertained with books, toys, snacks and a portable DVD player. Visiting family in Indiana, Alabama and in the Chicago area meant the road trips varied in length and

TOWN OF THE

they just got used to it. A few lessons learned, keep the snack bag and drinks within reach to avoid stopping more than you need. Break up a long trip with a quick stop every two hours, and make use of small playgrounds and walking paths at rest stops. When there were no rest stops, we usually tried to find a Love’s or a Cracker Barrell for bathroom breaks. Also make sure if your younger kids want to pack their own stuff, they include a jacket. Especially in the winter. Lesson learned on a Presidents’ Day weekend getaway when we made a pit stop and one of our girls didn’t bring a coat. “I thought we’d be in the water park the whole time?”

Back when you could still rent them, we were (possibly) the top renters of the 15-passenger vans for our St. Ambrose Youth Group trips. Float trips, service projects, retreat events, you name it, we could get them there. The longest trip was to the UP of Michigan with 2 vans, kids and another parent driving a conversion van pulling a U-haul with all our stuff. No better way to travel!

I used to make mix tapes just for long trips, featuring the best of everything I owned at the time. I think I still have some of them and a working

cassette deck, but now I’m spoiled with online music streaming. Any song, anytime. The mega-road trips for us took place with the Encounter Youth Choir. We were privileged to go to St. Simon Island, Georgia; Estes Park, Colorado; and Panama City Beach, Florida with the group. Road trips on a chartered bus are the way to go and offer plenty of chances for bonding, sleeping with an armrest in your spine for hours on end, and watching friends make poor snack choices at truck stops at 3am. (never trust truck stop cheese!) The bigger reward was being able to be with teens who had never seen the ocean or the mountains before that trip. Road trips aren’t for just going somewhere, it’s about the memories you make!

Whatever you’re planning this summer, wherever you go, gas up the night before, have those snacks within reach, and don’t forget your sunglasses! Oh, and you can always stream the Big Z Media stations while you’re on the road through advantagenews.com! 3

SECRET DINER

Picking a healthy option for a place to eat isn’t always a bad thing and this salad and sandwich shop in central Madison County is a good choice.

I recently visited for lunch and had some trouble finding the small place. It’s a little inconspicuous, even though it’s right along a side road in town in front of a residential area. On further inspection the name is written in cursive on the large picture window on the front of the building, as well as in raised gold lettering above the black and white striped awning.

It’s a very homey, farmto-table feel here. The warm, light colors make for an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. Behind the counter in the front of the establishment you’ll find big menu boards hanging on the walls. Drinks are available in coolers and there is even a small line of beers and seltzers available.

The pricing is a little high for what it is, but you get a lot of food with your order. I even had some to go on my visit.

My order consisted of hummus and pita chips as an appetizer and a large buffalo chicken salad for the main course.

Starting with the hummus, it was so creamy and earthy in flavor, not overloaded

with garlic flavor like I feel I get sometimes with hummus. It was really good and I had a decent amount left to take with me for another snack due to the size of the order. It’s easily a shareable plate.

As for the salad, the first thing I noticed was the slight kick to it. The buffalo flavor really stood out. The chicken was super tender and complemented nicely by the bleu cheese and corn mixed in. The corn, cheese and buffalo sauce drove the taste. There are a ton of other salad choices here too, including a hummus salad, barbecue chicken, cobb, Greek, mandarin orange and Caesar to name a few.

You can also build your own salad with a slew of healthy choices. Toppings include goodies like apples, chickpeas, beets, strawberries and blueberries, among more

traditional options.

If salads aren’t your bag, grab a grilled chicken pita, a buffalo pita or a grilled cheese sandwich. Hours are short, so check before you visit. It’s open from 11am to 7pm MondayFriday and 8am to 1pm on Saturday. They are closed on Sunday. 3

Rotary Park opens in downtown Alton

FREE FRIDAY NIGHT SUMMER CONCERTS AT ALTON GODFREY ROTARY PARK

Alton Main Street and Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau along with presenting sponsor Simmons Hanly Conroy are pleased to announce two summer concerts at the new Alton Godfrey Rotary Park, located across the street from Alton City Hall at 101 E. 3rd Street in Alton. Both concerts are free to attend and will be held from 7-9pm.

Funky Butt Brass Band will perform on Friday, July 14. The band was formed in 2008 by six talented musicians who respect and revere the New Orleans brass band tradition. The FBBB takes traditional New Orleans brass tunes and sprinkles in their own brand of special Saint Louis musical magic. At any given gig, you’ll also hear some Chicago blues, Memphis soul, Southern rock and St. Louis R&B.

Aaron Kamm & the One Drops will perform on Friday, August 18. Hailing from St. Louis, AKOD merges flavors of roots reggae and Mississippi River blues and infuses them with improv-laced jams, and soulful vocals. With their high-energy performance and unique sound, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops are a must-see as they tour their way across the country for concerts and festivals.

“We are grateful to Simmons Hanly Conroy for providing this opportunity that allows us to bring these great acts

to Alton, which we anticipate will draw a big crowd from across the river to experience everything that Alton has to offer,” said Sara McGibany, Executive Director of Alton Main Street.

Attendees are strongly advised to bring a blanket to spread on the lawn or a lawn chair to place on 3rd Street, which will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event. Food & beverages will be available for purchase on-site, or attendees are encouraged to pick up a carry out meal from their favorite Downtown Alton dining establishment on their way to the concerts.

“Alton-Godfrey Rotary created this beautiful park to celebrate our club’s 100th anniversary, and we are so pleased to see the space utilized in this way to bring the community together for music overlooking the river,” said Antione Williams, President of Alton-Godfrey Rotary.

To get involved with the many ways that Alton Main Street volunteers are working to promote the district and improve the quality of life in our community, please contact McGibany, at sara@ altonmainstreet.org. For full details of the organization’s beautification projects, special events, networking activities, investment opportunities and more, please visit DowntownAlton. com. 3

A new park officially opened earlier this spring in the city of Alton. Alton Godfrey Rotary Park is located at Third and Easton Streets across from Alton City Hall and behind Building One Eleven, which is the former Millers Mutual building. Building One Eleven is fully occupied and home to numerous businesses along with the STEM wing of Marquette Catholic High School.

The Alton Godfrey Rotary Club helped spearhead the project with funding assistance from Giant City Properties which owns the building. Employees of Simmons Hanly Conroy held a company picnic back in May also inviting Alton City employees, rotary members and others to celebrate the park’s opening.

Rotary Club Member Andy Bowen says the park is to celebrate a milestone anniversary of the club.

“We were looking for an idea to celebrate our 100th anniversary and it was in the summer of 2019 we connected with Giant City Properties, who owns the 111 building, and came up with the idea of a new park. They were interested in partnering with someone to redo the space and we jumped at the chance to work with them.”

Todd Adamitis with Giant City Properties says the park is free for the community to use:

“We thought it would be nice to do some type of gathering space or park that the public could use, Marquette could use, a scout troop, a book club or maybe for a small wedding. It’s free to use by anyone in the community. We wanted this to be a place that would add to what is already being offered downtown, with a great view of the

river and later this summer of the fireworks.”

Alton Godfrey Rotary Club marked its 100th anniversary in March 2021 but the project was delayed a few years due to COVID. It was dedicated with a ribbon cutting on May 17. For more information on how to reserve the park for special events, call 618259-2222. 3

You never know when you first meet someone what it might lead to.

This kid (actually a young man in his early 20s but he was 22 years my junior, thus a kid to me) appeared in my office at the radio station for a job interview. For the umpteenth time as general manager I was interviewing for a part-time news person, somebody who wanted to work weekends and was willing to report for work before 5am. Previous hires had flamed out quickly and so here I went again in quest of somebody who might be capable and would actually embrace the job. I had several copies of the “kid’s” resume in my file folder. The resume was unremarkable: a local kid who graduated from a local high school and went on to college, now looking to do anything at the local radio station. I’d seen these resumes before; somebody willing to do anything to get a foot in the door. But I also knew there was almost always a hidden agenda, something they really wanted to do. And that rarely included working ungodly hours every weekend. Especially for a

kid in his early 20s. But the fact that he had sent several resumes indicated at least some resolve. So I called him in for an interview. He must have impressed me because I think I offered him the job on the spot. Or maybe I was desperate, I’m not sure. And shortly thereafter, Nick Darr was the weekend news guy on the Big Z. He got off to a great start – he showed up and was on time. And as the weeks rolled on it got even better. He kept coming back. And he did a good job. Eager to learn. Capable. Smart. Willing to take direction. Volunteering to take on more responsibility.

It appeared the “kid” might be one of my better hires. Thus it began. From that inauspicious first meeting in my office for a job interview, to weekend news man, to radio salesman, to sales manager, and then, after a sojourn through the desert as a financial planner with another company, a return to the Big Z as general manager. And now, Nick and his wife Sheila have become owners of Big Z Media.

Little did I know in that first meeting what the next

nearly quarter century had in store for me, Nick, and his family. I would think that many people who sell their businesses see it as a bittersweet moment, stepping away from their life’s work and hoping that the buyer treats it with the same respect you did for all those years. But in my case there’s nothing bittersweet about selling to Nick and Sheila. They, like me, grew up in this community. This is their home. And they have servant’s hearts. And the mission of Big Z Media is to serve, to be a conduit for everything good in this, our community. I know they’ll take good care of my baby.

So as I step away as owner, I do so with a sense of excitement, because as proud as I am of what I have accomplished over the years, I’m even more excited about what the future holds.

Nick and Sheila Darr are the right people at the right time, just as that “kid” nearly 25 years ago was the right guy at the right time. I can’t wait to see what the next 25 years holds for them. I have no doubt it will be great! 3

The appendectomy

When my youngest son was barely 18 months old, he was diagnosed with Celiac disease, a usually longterm autoimmune disorder caused by a reaction to gluten. To simplify, instead of digesting food, breaking it down, the body passes food on through the system (diarrhea) or simply rejects it (vomiting). The result?

Our youngest child looked like the quintessential malnourished kid—ribs visible, stomach bloated. He was literally starving to death.

Far more than simple gluten intolerance, which his sister has, Celiac disease can ultimately be fatal. But, by simply avoiding gluten, all is well. And so it is with our son, who is big, and strong, and the picture of health.

My wife and I learned that the disease is found only in people of Irish and Welsh extraction—that’s us, at least the Irish. And it probably explains the stomach issues I had as a child.

When I was ten years old, I was in my class at school, experiencing some typical mild stomach pain. I told my teacher that my stomach hurt. She asked if I wanted

LIFE HESTON ON

to go home and wanted her to call my mother to pick me up. Even as a youngster, I knew an opportunity when I saw one, and quickly answered, “Yes!”

Teacher called. Mom came.

I left. Yes! Out of school for the day! But mom had other ideas. “We’re going to see Dr. Hall,” she said. “Why?”

I asked, trying not to sound panicky. “Well, we need to find out why your stomach is hurting.”

“It doesn’t feel too bad now,”

I said. “I think you could just take me back to school. Remember, I had all those baked beans last night.”

“No. We’re going to see Dr. Hall.” We did.

I lay on the … whatever that thing is you lie on in a doctor’s office … as our hometown doc poked and prodded and asked me questions. Finally, he turned to my mom and said, “He’s got appendicitis. He needs to go to the hospital right now and have his appendix out.”

Whoa! Wait a minute!

That was never part of the equation! Bless me, Father, for I have sinned! I gave

all sorts of reasons why I couldn’t go to the hospital, but we did … directly, promptly. When we arrived, I refused to get out of the car. So my mother—you know, the lady who gave me birth—simply got out, shut her door, and started walking calmly toward the hospital entrance. Panicking, I hurriedly followed her, somehow thinking that being left alone in a parked vehicle—a not-uncommon occurrence for a kid in 1950s Greenville—was a worse case scenario than an appendectomy. Stupid kid! So it was that the appendix came out, compliments of the good Dr. Hall. Even as an appendix-less 10-yearold, however, I couldn’t be mad at my doctor for ruining my day off school because, as it turned out, a 1950s appendectomy got me off school for a full two weeks. 3

Tinnon presented with Shine Like Spencer Kindness Award

This is the story behind the Shine Like Spencer Kindness Award presented annually to a Roxana High School Senior by the Bacus family in honor of their son, Spencer Bacus. Spencer was born with a rare birth defect called Giant Congenital Nevus (GCN) which covered most of his body. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the disease in 2018. This is the 5th year of presenting this award. Below is a speech written by his brother Olivier to let you know who Spencer was: My brother Spencer graduated from Roxana High School in 2012. During his career as a student, he emerged as a leader amongst his classmates and within the school. He served on the student council for four years and

starred in many plays and musicals on this very stage; he was a passionate member of the weightlifting club established by the late Mr. Jeff Welker; and he proudly led the marching band for two years as Drum Major. He was an Honor Thespian and the Fine Arts Fellow.

However, despite those accolades and accomplishments the legacy he left behind is one of extraordinary kindness and acceptance, of self-sacrifice and perseverance through adversity. He is remembered for his unique ability to be a friend-to-all; who always tried to be nice, but never failed to be kind. That is the criteria for this award.

When my family established this monetary award in 2018 it was with the intention

that it be given to the graduating senior who best displays these qualities that characterized Spencer’s positive mindset. The Shine Like Spencer Kindness Award is not a scholarship. Students cannot apply, they must be nominated by a member of the faculty or staff.

Often this means that our recipient is someone who does these things humbly and quietly; not to score points with their peers, but simply because it is who they are. Our past recipients have come from different backgrounds, and excelled in different areas. But each of them exemplified outrageous kindness and amazing perseverance. They have carried on the legacy that Spencer left behind, and Roxana High School is better because of them. 3

Fishing Fair draws another big crowd to Pere Marquette

The Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair had a little something for everyone on Saturday, June 10. A large crowd took advantage of a warm day and sunshine to attend the 34th year of the event where once again, all activities were free. Pere Marquette State Park hosted the event where kids and families took part in a variety of outdoor activities on the grounds in front of the lodge and visitors center.

There was a catch-andrelease bluegill pond where young anglers had their photograph taken with their catch; the One-Cast station, where everyone wins a prize; and bow-fishing stations where children could shoot at moving targets in a pool or at a 3D target. Every child who completed at least seven stations received a prize and chance to catch a trout in the trout pond.

Jason Reynolds brought his 4,000-gallon mobile aquarium stocked with many of the fish species found in the Illinois River. Jason also conducted a few shows

including dogs jumping into the water.

Camo the Clown was there again along with the Lodge Brothers band, and Wildheart. Alex Nagy of Twisted Cat Outdoors also brought his tournament rig. Big Z Media was also there with free giveaways for everyone who stopped by their tent.

Scott Isringhausen, Urban Fishing Coordinator for southern Illinois in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said, “We want kids to get hooked on fishing and get outdoors. Any time you can get kids

and parents away from the TV, their phones, and other distractions and see what the outdoor world has to offer is a good day.”

He said, “Thanks to our generous sponsors, we are able to continue to offer this free event. We are very fortunate to have the support of the Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery as a Premier Sponsor, along with Farm and Home Supply, the Jersey County Board, Walmart, State Farm Insurance of Jerseyville and Carrollton, and many others.”

The event is hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Pere Marquette State Park, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. 3

Vanilla Ice and other ’90s stars to perform at Alton Amphitheater in August

The Alton Amphitheater Commission is excited to announce initial events for the 2023 season, highlighted by the I Love The 90s Tour on Friday, August 4, at 8pm.

The I Love The 90s Tour invites attendees to reminisce about the trend setting decade of the 1990s with some of the most iconic, indelible names in rap, hip hop, and R&B. The evening includes performances by iconic ’90s artists Vanilla Ice, Rob Base, All-4-One, and Tag Team.

“A Friday night on the Alton Riverfront with an exciting lineup of iconic ’90s artists will be a great night for Alton and the region,” said Dan Herkert, Alton Amphitheater Commission Chair. “The Amphitheater Commission is excited to bring yet another national act to our riverfront to anchor the 2023 season.”

Tickets for the I Love The 90s Tour are on sale at metrotix.com and through MetroTix outlets. VIP tickets will sell for $120 per person, reserved tickets for $79 per person, and general admission tickets for $37.50 per person. A local ticket outlet will be established and announced in the near future.

A VIP ticket includes entry to the concert, assigned seating in the VIP area, reserved parking, and access to the VIP tent on the side of the stage with private concessions. A reserved ticket provides entry to the concert and assigned seating at the amphitheater while general admission tickets include entry to the venue and seating in the lawn area.

“The buzz around this concert is going to be loud and we’re confident that VIP tickets will sell quickly,” said

Amphitheater Commission

Vice Chair Michelle Brooks. “The I Love The 90s Tour will provide an exciting Friday night of unforgettable music on the Alton Riverfront.”

With the I Love The 90s Tour anchoring the 2023 season on Alton’s riverfront, the Alton Amphitheater Commission is also proud to announce the return of popular favorites Fireworks on the Mississippi (July 3), The Alton Food Truck Festival (August 26), The Alton Jazz & Wine Festival (September 2), and the Alton Expo (September 7-10).

“We’re looking forward to another great summer on the Alton Riverfront, highlighted by the I Love The 90s Tour,” said Herkert. “We’re grateful to all of our generous sponsors, without whom we wouldn’t be able hold great events such as this.” 3

Bethalto Splash Landing, our splash pad, is open daily from 10am-5pm with free admission. Bring the family out for a day of fun and a splashing good time! Concessions are available on-site, and you can enjoy our newly upgraded playground just outside the splash pad as well. Looking to book a private splash pad party?

Dates are already limited, but visit our website Bethalto.com, on the home page under “Quick Links”, for more Splash Pad information and how to reserve your date.

Bethalto Spirit’s Music in the Park has been drawing good crowds every Thursday in Central Park. This year has seen the return of Elvis, Flip the Frog, and a visit by the Scott Air Force Base band as well as many other great entertainers. Be sure to follow Bethalto Spirit on Facebook for more details on all their events. Their weekly Farmers Markets run from 9am-1pm each Sunday through October 15. We enjoy seeing the abundance of fresh produce, plants, meats, crafts, and more and hosting all their great local vendors!

Bids have been received for the repair of the Stadium Drive Bridge on Stadium Drive west of Steve Bryant Park and construction on that project will begin very soon. Unfortunately, completion of these repairs will cause road closures and detours for a short period of time; however, the contractor estimates the work will be completed in 40 working days and the roadway will be like new in time for school to open

in August. Those of you who travel that route frequently should watch for signs in the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve our roadways and infrastructure.

The Bethalto Volunteer Fire Department stays busy not only working to help keep Bethalto safe, but also with planning the annual Labor Day Homecoming celebration, set for September 1-4 in Central Park. Affectionately known by locals as the “Bethalto World’s Fair”, this year is shaping up to be full of great food, rides, games, and fun for everyone.

Those interested in being a vendor at the Homecoming should visit our website Bethalto.com, under “Important Notices”

for a link to the vendor application. Be sure to follow the Bethalto Fire Department’s Facebook page for more details closer to the event. We appreciate all our emergency responders who help make Bethalto the great place it is to live and raise a family. Seniors—don’t forget about our Senior Bus Program. Through a collaboration with Fort Russell Township, Wood River Township, and the Village of Bethalto, anyone aged 62+ can catch a free ride on the Senior Bus to doctor’s appointments, hair salons, grocery shopping, and more. The bus will pick you up at your door, safely drive you to your destination (specified distances within Bethalto, Alton, Godfrey, Wood River, East Alton),

and get you home quickly and efficiently, all at no cost to the rider. All you need to do is call one day in advance between 9am-11:30am to schedule a ride; the dispatch number is 618-377-5263. The program is always seeking volunteer drivers & dispatchers—anyone interested can contact Bill Ambrose at 618-7928971.

New playground opens at Boys and Girls Club in Alton

The Boys and Girls Club of Alton held a ribbon cutting on June 8 at their new playground. Community members helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to help get the project moving and replace an old playground at the club along Washington Avenue. The playground is open for any kid in the community to use.

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Al

Womack credits Eddie Sholar for getting the ball rolling to improve that part of the property, “We had the idea of putting something in there that’s safe for kids and Eddie said he would put up $10,000 and see if we could get others to do the same. We got some other people to match it and also give other amounts.”

Womack stressed the playground would not have been possible without help from community partners,

businesses, board members and other supporters of the club.

“Ultimately we have a great project for kids, with a soft surface for falls and we could not have done it without community support because it benefits the entire community.”

The total project cost was around $185,000. Helmkamp Construction led the installation effort. 3

With its sprawling lawns and meticulously maintained gardens, it is a treasure trove of botanical beauty and architectural grandeur. A highlight of Pride Incorporated’s Garden Tour, the mansion’s grounds captivate visitors with their lush greenery, vibrant blooms, tranquil spaces, and unforgettable river view.

Car show rescheduled for July 16 in downtown Alton

Whether you’re marveling at the centuries-old trees or admiring the meticulous design of the flower beds, the Olin Mansion stop promises to be an unforgettable part of the tour.

“Year after year, this selfguided event showcases the incredible horticultural talent we have in our community,” said Pat Stewart, Executive Director at Pride Incorporated.

“It’s not just a tour - it’s an inspirational journey of beauty and creativity, demonstrating that our love for nature is a shared experience.”

Tickets for the Pride Incorporated Garden Tour are now available for purchase online at pridegardentour.com.

Attendees are encouraged to book their tickets early to ensure a spot, as tickets are limited due to the intimate nature of this community event. 3

Alton’s 26th annual All-Wheels Drive-In Car Show will now be held on Sunday, July 16, from 8am until 4pm. The event typically attracts over 200 classic cars, hot rods and motorcycles, which the public is welcome to browse on 3rd, 4th, State and Belle Streets. There is no charge for admission.

The event was originally scheduled for June 11 but was rained out.

Alton Main Street organizes this tradition with support from Time Machines Unlimited Car Club. Come out for the autos and stay for the live music, 50-50 drawing, vendor displays and festival food court.

This year’s entertainment is Number4Combo; from 1-3pm the band will perform live rock music with a smooth dance

groove. We will also be featuring a pinup contest at 3pm to celebrate the glamour, sophistication and class of the 1950s.

Registration for automobiles is open from 8am until 12pm, and trophies will be given at 4pm. Please note that we are reconfiguring the event grounds to improve traffic flow, and registration for automobiles entering the show will now be located near Danny’s Lounge at 118 W. 4th Street. Please enter from Piasa Street (Hwy 67) to 4th Street. A map can be found at downtownalton. com/events, along with details on the 38 classes and 6 specialty awards. For car show related questions, please contact Jamey Griffin at: 618792-8901. 3

LOCAL EXPERTS Racing action rolls through the summer months

BANKRUPTCY

Can a bankruptcy stop a foreclosure?

YES.

You’ve already been struggling with bills for months. All of your income goes right back out the door as soon as you’re paid, with little or nothing left over. Then an emergency comes up and you are unable to make your house payment.

The mortgage company says they will work with you, but then they return your check the following month. You feel like you get the run-around every time you call them, and then you get a letter saying that they are going to start foreclosure proceedings.

Can a bankruptcy stop the foreclosure?

A chapter 13 bankruptcy stops a foreclosure and allows you to get caught up on your payments through a federally court ordered repayment plan. Your mortgage company will be paid the regular monthly payment and a small portion of the arrearage amount each month.

A chapter 13 bankruptcy can also allow you to discharge many unsecured debts in the process, making it even easier to pay your mortgage and keep your house – your most valuable asset.

What does a will do for me?

A will instructs how you want your assets (money, property, etc.) to be distributed after you die. If you die without a will, your probate assets will be divided according to state law.

Here are some tips for preparing a will:

• Have an attorney draft your will. By drafting it on your own, you risk being non-compliant with state law which makes your will invalid.

• Name an executor, who will handle such tasks as collecting assets, paying all debts and taxes and distributing your estate, according to your wishes.

• List personal property such as artwork, collectibles, jewelry and other personal property that you want to go to specific individuals.

• Do not include funeral preferences in your will since it may not be read until several weeks after your death.

• Review your will every few years and have your attorney make changes as appropriate.

A little advance preparation will help ensure that your final wishes are handled the way YOU planned them to be.

The recently completed NASCAR weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway Motorsports Park) has been deemed another successful event at the region’s largest speedway. Not only was the on-track action hot, but the economic impact to the region is undeniable, at an estimated $60 million. The events leading up to the race were a big hit as many of the Cup series racers enjoyed dueling on the dirt at Tri-City Speedway, just 8 miles north on Route 203 in Pontoon Beach.

Larson raced his late model on Friday, and Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was a solid runner-up in the spring car race.

116 W. Bethalto Blvd, Bethalto 618-377-8912 tomlaneagency.net

Racing began on the Wednesday prior to the Cup race with the new High Limit Sprint Car series, and Kyle Larson came through the field to capture the win. On Thursday night, Larson’s son Owen and Kyle Buch’s son Brexton battled on the small track in a version of racing karts with cages, and Kyle Busch himself got to run with the micros on the same track. Then on Friday night, the World of Outlaws Late Models were joined by the winged sprint cars of the Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA), and both divisions put on stellar shows. Kyle

July is shaping up to be another busy month for auto racing at the Madison County Fairgrounds. It starts with the MOWA Sprint Cars headlining the show on July 1. July 8 is the DirtCar SummerNationals for Late Model and Modified stock cars, which is usually the largest crowd of the season. The regular weekly show is next on July 15. The Larry Westerfield Memorial race for winged micros follows on July 22, and the month wraps up with a special Wednesday night race during the Madison County Fair on July 26.

A couple of big late model stock car events highlight the schedule at Tri-City Speedway in July. Tuesday, July 4 is the second SummerNationals event of this year. It is a rarity for one track to get two of these events in a single year. On Friday, July 1, the Lucas Oil Late Models will make their only visit to the track in 2023. A monster Truck show will wrap up the month July 21 and 22. 3
