ACT drivers awarded for years of perfect safety

The Agency for Community Transit (ACT) recognized two fixed-route drivers today and one paratransit driver for consecutive years of perfect safety while driving a public transportation vehicle. ACT operates fixed-route bus service for the Madison County Transit District (MCT). Two ACT drivers, (Abron Scott and David Marshall) were recognized for 10 years of perfect safety, and one, (Connie Ballard) was recognized for 15 years of perfect safety.

As defined by the National Safety Council, to retain the ‘perfect safety’ designation, drivers must, in all situations, make every effort possible to avoid an accident. Over the course of the last ten years, these drivers have each logged more than 20,000 hours behind the wheel of a transit vehicle without a preventable accident. The driver with 15 years has logged more than 30,000

Brighton church celebrating 175 years

The First Presbyterian Church of Brighton has been an integral part of the Brighton area community since before the Civil War. The church was founded in 1847 and has served the community continuously ever since its origination. A special service will be held on Sunday, September 4, commemorating its 175th anniversary.

Rev. Marc Wendleton has served at the church for five years. He was widowed in 2018 after being married for 10 years to his wife, Brandy. He married his current wife, Linda, in June of this year. Together they have a son and a daughter. He is

the 39th pastor the church has had in its 175 years of existence.

The church was organized by Rev. William C. Chamberlain, a missionary of the Alton Presbyterian Church at the time. Eleven members were enrolled in the church when it was founded. “The church is older than the town of Brighton itself,” says Wendleton. The first physical church was built with the completion of a small brick building in 1851 just south of where the current church stands. In 1869, due to expanding membership, the congregation collected money to build a larger building which is the sanctuary currently still in use.

Renovations and additions have been completed since that time. In 1961, ground was broken for a new Christian Education building. It was completed at a cost of $60,000, an extremely large amount of money at the time. Through sacrifice and contributions made by members, the mortgage on the building was paid off by 1971. At about the same time, the sanctuary was renovated and rearranged. The rostrum was raised and painted and a choir loft was built on the north side of the rostrum.

Wendleton explains that the Civil War caused a great rift in the Presbyterian church organization between North and South members, a rift which was subsequently

divided further over the years by ideological differences between the denominations. Throughout it all, the Brighton church continued to serve its congregants and the surrounding community. In 1983, divisions in the church were reconsolidated into the Presbyterian Church (USA), to which the Brighton church now belongs.

Presbyterian Church (USA) is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States.

The church participates in numerous community outreach and assistance programs. It provides meeting facilities for local Boy Scout, Girl Scout and weight loss groups. It partners with St. John’s

United Church of Christ on the Pack-aSack lunch program, a program designed to address the problem of chronic hunger in school children. The church also partners with St. Paul United Methodist Church, providing food and funding for local food pantries. The Brighton Presbyterian Church is steward of the Good Samaritan Fund, partnering with St. John’s and St. Paul’s to provide funding to individuals, families and organizations for emergencies.

Sheila Wilke is clerk of session for the church and coordinates mission and outreach programs. “Over the years, the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton has always been a part of the community,” she says. She notes that in addition to supporting the aforementioned programs, the church purchases school supplies for local students, Christmas presents for Robing Manor residents and takes up offerings when a special need arises in the community. She notes the church also supports offerings of the Presbyterian Church (USA), including One Great Hour of Sharing, the Pentecost Offering, the Peace and Global

hours behind the wheel.

“The National Safety Council’s standards for perfect safety are very rigid,” said ACT Executive Director SJ Morrison. “To drive for 10 or 15 years without a preventable accident is a difficult milestone to reach. We’re really proud of these individuals for their diligence and for their ongoing service to the people of Madison County.” 3

Witness Offering and the Joy Offering. The church’s Ladies Evening Circle provides food to families at Eastertime, supports the Nurses Fund and contributes to other causes throughout the year.

Services at First Presbyterian Church of Brighton, 402 N. Main Street, are conducted every Sunday at 9am. The September 4 anniversary service will be at that same time. Special guests from the Presbytery will attend and the service will include former pastor Mark Strothman. Fellowship time and a brunch will follow the service. Anyone with questions about the church or the anniversary service can contact the church by phone at 618-372-8241. 3

Blues Brothers return to Old Joliet Prison for festival

Ever considered a road trip up to Joliet, Ill.? You should.

It’s like Alton, a town with lots of history and has tourism as a calling card.

On August 19 and 20, a friend and I traveled up Interstate 55 to take in the inaugural Blues Brothers Convention at the Old Joliet Prison, organized by the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

Officials there dreamed big, and it paid off. The 16-acre prison complex built in the 1850s fell into disrepair over the decades and became an eyesore, with arsonists setting portions on fire since 2000. The Joliet mayor and others sought out grant money and donations to turn the property around and open up possibilities for tours and festivals.

Portions of the 1980 hit movie “The Blues Brothers” were filmed at the prison, while inmates were still incarcerated there. One of the actors, “Joliet Jake Blues” played by the late actor John Belushi, posed for photos while there shooting and got some inspiration for his blues-singing character while onsite.

Forty-two years after the movie’s premiere, Belushi’s real-life brother Jim Belushi, and John Belushi’s movie sidekick Dan “Elwood Blues” Aykroyd, took the stage for a 90-minute performance of Blues Brothers music, with a band of musicians hand-picked for a mini-tour in 2022. Tunes like “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Soul Man” resonated through the crowd of several-thousand assembled on the vast lawn on the inside of the prison complex.

Dozens of fans of the movie and the music dressed like the Blues Brothers in dark fedoras and suits.

Organizers said they look to build on its success in the future. They had several photo-op stations

set up where fans could take selfies with Blues Brothers themed backgrounds.

Collectors brought old police cars modeled after the Bluesmobile from the movie. And the Mt. Prospect Police displayed a squad car styled like the Bluesmobile would’ve looked new. Dan Aykroyd signed the trunk lid of it before his performance.

As for the Old Joliet Prison itself, we found numerous mentions to Alton displayed onsite, including the fact that the prison was built to replace Alton’s penitentiary, the first of its kind in the state of Illinois.

Fans of Route 66 history will find lots to see in Joliet, as well. One place that caught our eyes was the “Kicks on 66” ice cream

stand, with Blues Brothers figurines dancing on the roof. And there is a variety of live music to experience in Joliet, especially on weekends. We took in some rock-n-roll, but other spots featured blues, a mariachi band with tuba, and dance music. 3

Alton to receive $21 million investment for downtown including Wedge Innovation Center

Plans were unveiled August 17 for a $21 million investment in downtown Alton. John Simmons of AltonWorks said the Wedge Innovation Center will be in the former Wedge Bank, built in 1904. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker joined with local dignitaries at the ceremony.

Pritzker announced $3 million is coming from the state for the Wedge Innovation Center project, through the “Rebuild Illinois” Downtowns and Main Streets Capital grants program.

“At AltonWorks, we believe Alton can become a bright light of social impact innovation, opportunity, and equity for this entire region.

The Wedge Innovation Center will be designed as an accelerator, incubator, and digital hub specializing in livability, clean tech, climate tech and various other technologies to benefit everyday lives,” said Simmons.

Alton Mayor David Goins also expressed gratitude for the investment. “This

grant funding opportunity will bring jobs, it will bring visitors and economic activity back into our community and accelerate the needed quality of life improvements that will stimulate jobs, boost our economy and just generate revenue for our city.”

“Take a walk or drive down any Main Street in the Metro East, and you’ll be met with character, historic buildings, and cultural

history,” said state Sen. Kris Tharp (D-Bethalto). “The combined $7.6 million (state) investments into Alton, Collinsville and Edwardsville will create jobs for residents, modernize infrastructure, and encourage patrons and visitors to explore their local downtown.”

Collinsville plans to use its $1.8 million to revitalize the corridor from Main Street to the Cahokia Mounds World Heritage Site.

Edwardsville is getting more than $2.8 million to improve water, sewer, and streetscape infrastructure on Main Street.

“I couldn’t be prouder of AltonWorks, and I look forward to seeing what they do with their Rebuild Illinois award,” said State Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton). “It is easy to see why their work is gaining attention across the state and I am glad the governor is here to see it.” 3

What’s my purpose?

Many of us heard our families discuss having purpose growing up. It is easy to perceive our reality, which is typically limited to our thoughts and life experiences, that may not relate to others with different cultures or backgrounds. It can be hard to understand what others have been through if we have not experienced it directly. For example, we may get diagnosed with cancer that is in stage four, and the doctor gives us six months to live. Though death comes for us all in the end (this is one of our universal commonalities as human beings), many try to avoid the perpetual, ticking clock. We look to find our purpose to make sense of our world and experiences. Throughout history, we have learned about monumental agents of change like Saint Teresa of Calcutta, better known as Mother Teresa, Bob Marley, Harriet Tubman, to Jesus Christ himself. These iconic idols in our history used their time and medium to help drive change. On the outside, looking in, it would feel that their purpose is what most

of us know them as. For some reading this, comparing others to what Jesus Christ accomplished and sacrificed during his life as the Messiah may be complicated. I am not attempting a theological debate. Furthermore, I am sharing that purpose can find us in times that can be difficult with much pressure to abandon such change. The same goes for our purpose. It can be a waterdowned life full of meaning in a society that measures success by how large our houses are, what cars we drive, or how many followers we have on social media. It is easy to look at others and think what they are doing is excellent and that we can never amount to their accomplishments. We compare ourselves to their looks and start degrading ourselves, evading any positive feelings we have about ourselves. It is easy to compare, and finding purpose is similar. Our goal does not have to be something significant that gets us praise and followers. The universe does not keep time as we do with a manufactured clock nor

track our progress in a life full of purpose. We can trick ourselves into avoiding something we feel compelled to do that allows us to feel purposeful by our constant fear of failure and comparing ourselves to others. Impostor syndrome can find us, and we begin to talk negatively about ourselves – not smart enough, handsome enough, skilled enough, and so on. Taking a risk on doing something we are drawn to accomplish, especially to help our communities, our families, or ourselves, can be rewarding even if we do not fully succeed the way we expect to.

The idea is we attempted to do something we have thought about for some time, and hopefully, we learned something to improve on our quest for fulfilling a purposedriven life. Purpose is not limited to large-scale change but allows us to fulfill a meaning that will enable us to feel complete and whole. Purpose can be as simple as writing a column that may touch a few of its readers in a positive or thoughtprovoking way. 3

The U.S. Census Bureau says a small town is defined by having a population of between 25,000 and 50,000. A poll on City-Data suggests if you live in a town of less than 7,000, then that’s a small town. Either way, if you are reading this and you live in the Riverbend, you live in a small town. BUT, put us all together and we have a nice sized community. That’s the beauty of living here…big enough for some and small enough for others.

The other nice thing about living here is getting to know people. I remember as a teen being interested in radio, I’d listen to the radio station that currently employs me, and I’d get to know voices.

On a few occasions I would overhear people talking at the movie rental place or at a restaurant, and I was able put the faces with the names from the radio.

It’s happened to me a few times over the years, including not long after I started working for The Big Z. I nice listener stopped me at the St. Mary’s

TOWN OF THE

SummerFest and said, “Hey, you’re from the radio, I recognize your voice.” It was weird to say the least, but kind of cool too!

“You have a face for radio” is a hilarious one liner I’ve heard a lot. Thing is, I like it. Because it’s true. Being on the radio you have some anonymity but obviously with my face now at the top of the page, along with social media, I guess some people recognize me.

Just a few weeks ago, my wife and I ate breakfast at Joe K’s, and my buddy Lucy was there. (Remember a few articles back…my grocery store friend?). Lucy was working the room like she was running for office. In fact, several people were.

Men, women, all connecting with friends. My wife said I should write about making connections in a small town. Making connections for me at least it not necessarily about working at a radio station. That’s only part of my story. I’ve coached my kids and their friends, been involved in my church, been

on boards and committees, and have done other things where you just start getting to know people. Plus, the people who know our parents and extended family we then get to know too.

A few years ago, my family was eating dinner at Johnson’s Corner, and as we sat down in our booth looked up and knew someone at every table. Every single one. Our kids were stunned, “Do you guys know everybody?” That night we did, but we’ve lived here all our lives, shop here, do things here, so we’ve made friends, and thankfully my wife is a name person.

So, I guess this is part one. What is your favorite place where you can walk in, and people know your name?

Drop me a line and tell me why you like it, and how it developed over the years. Or even if you are a transplant to this area, how challenging was it for you to get to know people? Your story might show up in a future article. Send the information to markellebracht@bigz.media

“Amazing customer service! I placed a work order request on their website and requested help with our air conditioner. Roger called in advance of arrival and as always was friendly and professional. Roger diagnosed my components systematically and explained what he was doing. He had the replacement components on his truck. One hour later and our emergency is over.”

Neighborhood bar with new twists

This newer establishment on the western border of Madison County has developed a pretty loyal following.

Part of that comes from honoring the memory of the longtime neighborhood bar housed there previously, but a lot comes from the new twists it has added to the atmosphere.

The statement on the homepage of their website describes the place pretty well, reading, “Great food, live entertainment and the best patio around.” I’m here to definitely vouch for the food; it’s good and it’s plentiful.

You can’t miss it when you’re driving by. While it’s not on a main road through town, it sits right out in the open with a small white sign with the restaurant’s name strategically placed to let you know you’ve arrived. There is a neighborhood street with parking along it on one side of the building, with a large gravel parking lot encompassing the other side.

There is an old pipe used as a door handle, a proper homage to the pipe fitters from the local refineries who were frequent visitors back in the day at the previous establishment.

Walk in and it feeds right into the bar area. There is a bar across the front of the room with swivel chairs lined in front of it in case you want to pony up there.

Plenty of liquor options adorn the wall behind it. To

the right of the bar you’ll find a few poker machines and a TouchTunes kiosk to pick out some good music. For more entertainment there is a pool table as the centerpiece of the room. Wooden tables with black chairs are sprinkled around the pool table and then behind it is an elevated stage area with a few high tables and chairs. That stage area, opposite of the bar, also features old album covers blanketing the wall. It mainly touts rock and country music from the 70s and 80s, anything from Kenny Rogers to Chicago to ZZ Top.

While all that is cool, I was visiting to get my grub on and that’s what I did.

I started with an order of stuffed mushroom caps off of the appetizer menu and added a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with potato salad as my main course. I learned quickly I didn’t need an app.

I’ll start backwards, because the pork tenderloin sandwich was the all-star. Aptly advertised as big as your face, this sandwich was monstrous. I got tomatoes only on mine, but normally it comes loaded with pickles, onions and lettuce, too.

It was delivered on thick white bread and after I squirted on some ketchup I was ready to dig in. It wasn’t easy to eat because it was so huge, but I powered through. I would definitely tout this pork tenderloin beast as GBD (golden, brown, delicious) and a destination dish. It’s worth going back for another; it was tender

and juicy as heck and popping with flavor. The potato salad was a super companion. It used thick cut potatoes with the skin on and was mustard based. It was extremely fresh and just creamy enough for some satisfaction.

Now back to the appetizer. The mushroom caps were great also. They were absolutely heaping with sausage, mixed with cream cheese and featured melty mozzarella cheese blanketing everything. There was such a hearty flavor from the sausage, sweetness from the cream cheese and creaminess from the mozzarella.

I visited with my parents and they were more than satisfied, too.

Dad got fried jumbo shrimp with green beans and fries. The shrimp were plump and GBD, the fries were unseasoned, but very good and fresh. The green beans were pretty pedestrian, but did have some bacon mixed in to gussy them up.

My mom went with a BLT and chips. Her sandwich was overflowing with bacon and she raved about it. I pilfered a few chips and they were super fresh and tasty.

This place is just the definition of a neighborhood bar. Workers were presenting a cake and balloons to an elderly regular for his birthday on my visit. They even sang him happy birthday.

As for other food options, they feature daily specials on top of everything else. Try things like the ginormous onion rings on the apps menu, chicken wings, tacos, pizza, fish bites, burgers, a pony shoe, a meatball sub, a fried chicken dinner, fried pork chops, a chicken parmesan dinner and much more. There are plenty of adult beverages to enjoy to boot. 3

The woods

I grew up one block outside the city limits of Greenville, Illinois. Of course, that is not the equivalent of growing up one block outside the city limits of Chicago, or even Alton. By the time you left the Bond County Courthouse on the square and reached the city limits in any direction, Greenville was already significantly rural.

On the dead-end street where I lived, there were four houses – ours the only one on the East. Years later, during a big-time housing boom, another house was erected – on the West, of course – bringing the total number of houses in that dead-end neighborhood to its ultimate capacity: Five.

In our isolated little world – reachable only by a steep descent at the West end of Asbury, an abrupt rightangle turn to the North, and an immediate steep ascent onto North Taylor – the ruralness was accentuated by the fact that our street was bordered on three sides by a thick, expansive woods.

In retrospect, there was never a time, a season, when the woods was not breathtaking. Whether budding its way into spring or filling the landscape with lush, summer green or

painting our world with an artist’s palate of brilliant red, gold, and orange or leaving trees stark and naked against wind-worked snow and ice, it was like stepping into the most enthralling storybook of our youth.

But it was on those summer days when, if you could catch a patch of air and run it through the ringers of an old-fashioned washing machine, you could fill a tub with water, that we found the woods most inviting. After all, there were only three air-conditioned buildings in the entire town. Beyond that, the vast, shaded woods was the coolest place around – putting the “green” in Greenville.

On hot summer days, neighborhood kids would spend dawn to dusk deep in the heart of that great woods. You could usually find us in the “Sunken Garden” – a long-ago opulent oasis belonging to one of the town’s elite families, replete with rock-hewn goldfish ponds, concrete

tables and chairs, surprising meadows and snaking paths taking you here, there, and everywhere – or on the edge of some great precipice preparing to soar into pure enjoyment.

We would traipse down a winding path or cut through undergrowth to a steep gully. There, we found a hanging vine, or cut loose a vine that had, near the bottom, become attached to a vast tree trunk. After testing its reliability, we launched into the purest enjoyment any kid could ever know. One by one, we grabbed the vine, raced down the hill, and jumped into thin air, carried by the vine.

We flew. As sure as grass is green and the summer sky is blue, we flew. And we did it again and again, until dusk beckoned us home. If never before or after, we were completely free and unhindered, no longer bound by time or gravity.

One could do worse than be a swinger of vines. 3

“We have always strived to accommodate our customers in a very timely way,”

Hill’s wife and company co-owner Jeanne pointed out. “But recently, we have been challenged in having our customers wait, in our opinion, much too long for their custom products. It is a problem that is out of our control, unfortunately.”

The location itself has had updates over time, including repainting of the exterior, new garage doors installed, and other modifications as needed.

Lyons Glass Company stays involved in its customers’ communities today, as it has since it opened nearly a century ago. “We have sponsored the Bucket Brigade in the past through Pride, Incorporated,” Jeanne

noted. “And most recently, we have been sponsoring sports teams with Godfrey Park and Rec. We regularly help with fundraisers at local area schools too. We try to be a good neighbor by supporting community efforts.”

“We are especially honored to have had the opportunity to serve Alton, the Riverbend, and the entire St. Louis and Metro East area for 40 years under the current ownership and team of dedicated staff. We are also thankful for all our wonderful customers who we have had the opportunity to serve,” she added.

Lyons Glass Company is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To learn more, visit online at lyonsglasscompany.com or call 618-462-2731.

IMPACT CIL offers broad range of assistance

Many people take for granted activities like making a phone call or getting on a bus. For others those everyday tasks can present unique and sometimes overwhelming challenges. IMPACT CIL (Centers for Independent Living) provides resources and advocacy for those with disabilities or needing assistance across a broad range of areas. The organization is a self-help, advocacy organization founded in 1985, formed by and continuing to be operated by people with disabilities. IMPACT CIL’s

services are available to residents of Madison, Macoupin, Bond, Calhoun, Greene and Jersey counties.

The organization’s stated mission is to advocate for independence, inclusion, equal opportunity and civil rights in every arena. They serve as an authoritative source on many critical issues facing the disability community. The non-profit group serves residents regardless of age or income status.

Tiffany Breden is the program director for IMPACT CIL and says their services span an extensive spectrum of areas. “One example is people who call us with

Renee

issues related to vision and hearing impairment,” she says. “There are all sorts of assistive technologies we can provide to help them. Everything from magnifiers to talking watches to bump dots for microwave ovens.”

IMPACT CIL currently offers a free amplified phone program.

Breden has 16 years with IMPACT CIL and is part of an executive team with deep experience. Executive Director Cathy Conarino has been with the organization for 35 years and Business Administrator Carla Sauerwein has worked there for 25 years.

“The majority of our team have disabilities so they have real world experience in dealing with the problems people face,” says Breden.

IMPACT CIL’s five core services are advocacy, information and referral services, peer support and counseling, independent living skills training and transition services.

The organization can serve as an advocate for people dealing with challenges

such as physical access issues. Breden explains while most problems of that type are resolved through initial outreach, IMPACT CIL can assist in escalating issues to county and state government where necessary.

The group provides referral services to a wide range of assistance organizations, including Americans with Disabilities, Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP), Illinois Attorney General on Disability Rights, Illinois Department of Human Rights, Illinois Network for Centers for Independent Living and the Madison County Association for the Blind.

Peer support and counseling is an important resource for many with disabilities. “People can call in and talk to someone who is actually going through the same thing,” says Breden. “Resources can also go out to their homes and show them how to make things more accessible and easier to navigate.” A support group for visually impaired

individuals is held once a month at the center.

IMPACT CIL also offers personal assistant training. The organization trains individuals on the responsibilities involved in providing personal assistance to individuals in need in their homes and then maintains a record of those trained people. When area residents need that type of assistance, they can call IMPACT CIL and be provided a list of those trained, qualified individuals whom they can contact.

The organization offers a Fast Track program which goes into area schools and works with individuals with disabilities on things like job readiness and workplace environment skills, preparing them to go out and get a job when they leave school. Transition training is also provided for people who are currently in supported living environments and want to move to independent living. “We can help find them subsidized housing, purchase upfront needs like furniture and kitchen

items, and help them get established with their initial rent and groceries,” says Breden.

The group also provides transit training. “For instance, if someone is not used to being in a wheelchair, they may not know how to use the bus service in it,” says Breden. “We can train them on how to get on the MCT buses, how to identify where they are going and how to get there.”

IMPACT CIL is located at 2735 East Broadway in Alton. Business hours are Monday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm. Appointments are currently required for in-office visits but inquiries can be made by phone anytime during business hours, 618-4621411. TTY services are available by calling 618474-5333. Breden also says IMPACT CIL welcomes donations and contributions. Individuals can call the office or go online to make donations directly through the organization’s website. 3 impatcil.org

BANKRUPTCY

Can a bankruptcy stop a foreclosure?

YES.

You’ve already been struggling with bills for months. All of your income goes right back out the door as soon as you’re paid, with little or nothing left over.

Then an emergency comes up and you are unable to make your house payment.

INSURANCE

As I’ve started my summer traveling this year, it seems road rage is still happening. How can I keep away from this?

PERSONAL

How long do your estate planning documents last?

The short answer is, “no.” However, please keep in mind:

The mortgage company says they will work with you, but then they return your check the following month. You feel like you get the run-around every time you call them, and then you get a letter saying that they are going to start foreclosure proceedings.

Can a bankruptcy stop the foreclosure?

A chapter 13 bankruptcy stops a foreclosure and allows you to get caught up on your payments through a federally court ordered repayment plan. Your mortgage company will be paid the regular monthly payment and a small portion of the arrearage amount each month.

A chapter 13 bankruptcy can also allow you to discharge many unsecured debts in the process, making it even easier to pay your mortgage and keep your house – your most valuable asset.

Attorney at Law • FREE CONSULTATION

P.O. Box 136, Wood River 618-797-8888

It is definitely an issue most of us have experienced. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests the following to help avoid becoming an aggressive driving victim or offender:

• Don’t tailgate (use the “2-second rule’ when following another driver)

• Avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver

• Use your horn sparingly

• Don’t block passing lanes or a right-turn lane.

• Signal before switching lanes or when turning

• Realize that you can’t control traffic – only your reaction to it. Plan ahead so you have extra time if traffic is busy.

• When parking, don’t take up more than one space. Don’t allow your door to hit the car parked next to yours. We are all responsible for what happens on the road so next time someone provokes you, take a deep breath and remember that how you react could impact whether or not you and everyone around you reaches a destination safely.

The more complete answer is that even though a Durable Power of Attorney or Health Care proxies will not expire, it is nevertheless the best practice to update your old documents.

This is because sometimes, third parties are hesitant to accept Health Care proxies and Durable Powers of Attorney that are very old, for fear that they might have been revoked or that they no longer express the person’s wishes. If you have very old documents and a thirdparty refuses to accept them, your designated agent may find themselves in a courtroom battle trying to legally enforce your documents. Be sure to meet with your estate planning attorney to keep these documents reasonably updated. For additional resources, contact us using the information below!

Judges help students prepare for the school year

Judge Martin Mengarelli and Judge Maureen Schuette from the Third Judicial Circuit coordinated efforts in the circuit to participate in a statewide initiative sponsored by the Illinois Conference of Chief Judges and the Illinois Judges Association to help a local organization’s students prepare for success in the 2022-2023 school year. The project Mengarelli and Schuette chose was to support Oasis Women’s Center, a local shelter that provides assistance and services for families dealing with domestic violence. The judges’ coordinated efforts to collect $1,100 in donations from the judiciary for Oasis to purchase needed school supplies for the children their organization assists. “The Third Judicial Circuit is happy to help our area students prepare for the upcoming school year with our donations.

I commend Judges Schuette and Mengarelli for spearheading the effort. Their enthusiasm and desire to be active and volunteer within our community is heartwarming,” said Chief Judge William Mudge Margarette Trushel, the executive director of Oasis, stated “We are so grateful for this kind and very generous donation to help our children prepare for a successful school year. It means a lot for them to start with all the supplies they need and they often ask, ‘is that all for me?’ On behalf of the board and staff of Oasis Women’s Center, I want to offer our sincere thanks. This gift will allow us to equip many children with the tools they need to learn and have a productive school year.” 3
