was seen not quite yet to financially be able to support a club, especially with clubs already in Alton, Carlinville, and Gillespie. As Jerseyville economically expanded, the businesspeople of Jerseyville approached District Governor Carl Weber.

On March 16, 1953, he saw a new view of Jerseyville when stating, “This is a fine little American city and certainly ought to have a

Rotary Club. I understand the persons who were contacted are very much in favor of the organization of this club. It is recommended that the club start with 20 to 22 members in order to give room for healthy growth and expansion.” An application for a new club was submitted for approval on April 13, 1953. The Jerseyville Rotary Club was admitted on April 17, 1953.

The club has healthily grown and expanded over the years. During the past 70 years, the club has stayed strong, serving others. The club has grown

from 25 members to a club that has over 40 Paul Harris Fellows (members who have individually donated $1,000.00 to Rotary International Service Projects). The Club has consistently and collectively fundraised throughout the decades also. Its biggest fundraiser is its annual Chillifest.

From its fundraising, the club has donated time and money to several local service projects. Projects include recognizing the JCHS Students of the continued on page 2

Rep. Elik honors two local women at Capitol

Illinois State Representative Amy Elik (R-Alton) honored Lewis & Clark Community College Board of Trustees Chairperson Julie Johnson and Desirée Bennyhoff, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce at the Emerging Women Leaders brunch held at the State Capitol in Springfield on April 18. The event honored the contributions of emerging female leaders from throughout the state.

“Julie Johnson and Desirée Bennyhoff are two local leaders making a positive impact in our communities,” said Elik. “Julie is strengthening our community college system to better prepare students for today’s workforce, and Desirée is committed to helping our region’s economy grow and prosper. What started on January 30, 2006 with the providing around 100 dictionaries to all the 3rd grade students in the Jersey Community Unit School District and St. Francis/Holy Ghost School, has now expanded to also include annually providing between 250-400 dictionaries to 3rd graders in Calhoun Community, Carrollton Community, Brussels Community and Southwestern Community School districts as well as the private schools within those districts. In addition to helping students in school, the club has donated audiovisual technology and other monetary assistance to the Jerseyville Public Library.

Vintage Voices Auditions are June 24 at YWCA in Alton

The Vintage Voices committee has set an audition date for Vintage Voices tours to be held in October. Auditions will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023, at YWCA Southwestern Illinois, 304 E 3rd St, Alton, Illinois 62002. Actors wanting to audition should arrive anytime between 12 and 4pm and will be asked to do a cold reading from a provided script. The event consists of tours held in the Alton Cemetery with actors in period costumes telling the story of Altonians who have shaped the area’s history. Commitment is five performances and an individualized rehearsal schedule.

The Club has also hosted foreign exchange students from Germany, Australia, Sweden, France, and other countries, as well as supporting several of our own students who enjoyed studying abroad as a foreign exchange student. Club members and local professionals and businesspersons has been part of group study exchanges to other countries while those countries sent people here to learn about the Midwest business culture.

Tourism Bureau and two area communities receive state tourism promotion grants

The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau of Southwest Illinois along with the cities of Grafton and Collinsville were awarded a total of $135,000 in Illinois Travel and Tourism grants from the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Office of Tourism.

The grant funds will be used to market the region and the individual cities in tourism promotions spearheaded by the Tourism Bureau.

“This is the first time we’ve applied for and received marketing grants for individual communities,” Cory Jobe, President of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau remarked.

“The grants call for a 50 percent match, so effectively we will be spending $270,000 on paid targeted marketing efforts, in addition to our normal marketing budget. We’ve seen a surge in interest in our region in the last several years from key markets in St. Louis, Chicago, Indiana, and Central Illinois-and that can be directly attributed to our strong marketing efforts.”

The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau received a $50,000 grant. The City of Grafton received a $35,000 grant and Collinsville received a $50,000 grant. The Tourism Bureau will create and place all marketing collateral for both cities.

Travel and Tourism Grants are funded by the federal Economic Development Administration to help reinvigorate tourism in

Illinois. Grants were available from $10,000 to $100,000. The grants are designed to provide funding for promotional efforts by local governments, municipalities, nonprofits and Certified Convention and Visitor Bureaus. The goal is to attract visitors to destinations, attractions and events in Illinois. 3

I traveled a bit for this latest dining adventure, but it’s well worth it for the food, the experience, the price and the camaraderie.

In south central Greene County you’ll find this destination joint and staple restaurant smack dab in the middle of this rural community. It sits on the town square and features street parking.

The small town, nostalgic feel is apparent quickly here, as well as this place’s popularity. There was a line on our visit but fortunately due to the business model here, the wait is short.

A large green awning stretches over the front of the main entrance donning the restaurant’s name very prevalently. It hangs over red wood paneling at the doorway with red brick at the bottom. There is an overall older, country ambiance to this place. You can tell it’s been around for awhile, it exudes its character nicely.

Now the reason why the wait is minimal even though it’s a bustling business is because they utilize the family style model. If you aren’t familiar with this, it means all you can eat for your main course and your sides. It just keeps on coming, which is a welcomed plan for a growing boy like myself.

I was there to celebrate my mother’s birthday with my dad and my best friend along for the experience. It was easy to

figure out what we were eating, because we all got the same thing, the signature and destination dish for this joint — fried pork chops. Sides for these awesome golden pork treats include, green beans, mashed potatoes, white gravy, cole slaw, applesauce and buttermilk biscuits.

I’m going to start with the pork chops. They are GBD (golden, brown, delicious), boneless, tender and chocked full of deliciousness. You can eat them with just a fork because they are so tender.

As for the sides, I would put the applesauce at the top. It’s practically a puree because it’s so smooth. The cole slaw was also pretty addicting. It was vinegar based and super fresh. It was finely chopped and delicious. The green beans and mashed potatoes were just classic comfort sides. The green beans were mixed with finely chopped onions, while the mashed potatoes were

Is the Threat of DeDollarization Real?

DEAR DAVE: I’m hearing more and more about “de-dollarization” and how several countries are moving away from the U.S. dollar as their basis of international trade. Will this affect the strength of the dollar, and should I be concerned about how I’m saving and investing because of this? -- Zack

DEAR ZACK: First and foremost, I care enough about you to say you may be spending way too much time on the internet, buddy. You’re drifting into the realm of conspiracy theories here, so let’s slow down and take a look at some facts.

China, Brazil and Russia are the three main players in all this. They already don’t use the U.S. dollar as their basis of international trade—all three have their own currency, and there’s a conversion rate between all those currencies and

the U.S. dollar. Those three countries, along with some of the oil-producing countries from the Middle East they’re trying to get on board with the idea, are talking about developing one currency they all use. In international trade, that currency would be converted back and forth to dollars—much like what Europe did with the euro. Which, by the way, really hasn’t worked out so well. Are those countries going to be able to devalue the dollar by doing that? No. Why? Because while those countries take up a lot of land mass, they don’t take up a lot of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the world. The United States still represents the vast majority of the world’s GDP. Sure, China’s big in that regard. But Russia doesn’t bring much to the table, and Brazil is barely scraping by in a failed economy. Plus, they’re tiny as far as economics are

concerned. I mean, Texas probably has a larger GDP than Brazil.

In other words, they just don’t have the muscle to take down the dollar mathematically speaking. Now, if they do manage to put this idea together, it still won’t end in “dedollarization.” The dollar will not be done away with. Even if they create their own currency, they’re still going to have to trade with the 800-pound gorilla, which is America. And they’re going to have to trade with us in dollars.

Am I worried about this, Zack? Not one bit. And you shouldn’t be either. 3
