Jerseyville Rotary Club marks 70th anniversary The Jerseyville Rotary Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary on April 17. In October 1924, an expansion committee was formed to determine if Jerseyville was a good location for Rotary to expand. Jerseyville was described as a rural community with retired farmers and the International Shoe Factory as the principal base for members. The initial expansion was rejected as Jerseyville was seen not quite yet to financially be able to support a club, especially with clubs already in Alton, Carlinville, and Gillespie. As Jerseyville economically expanded, the businesspeople of Jerseyville approached District Governor Carl Weber. On March 16, 1953, he saw a new view of Jerseyville when stating, “This is a fine little American city and certainly ought to have a
Rotary Club. I understand the persons who were contacted are very much in favor of the organization of this club. It is recommended that the club start with 20 to 22 members in order to give room for healthy growth and expansion.” An application for a new club was submitted for approval on April 13, 1953. The Jerseyville Rotary Club was admitted on April 17, 1953. The club has healthily grown and expanded over the years. During the past 70 years, the club has stayed strong, serving others. The club has grown
from 25 members to a club that has over 40 Paul Harris Fellows (members who have individually donated $1,000.00 to Rotary International Service Projects). The Club has consistently and collectively fundraised throughout the decades also. Its biggest fundraiser is its annual Chillifest. From its fundraising, the club has donated time and money to several local service projects. Projects include recognizing the JCHS Students of the
