The good news about Australian cruise

ello and welcome to our winter edition. Normally, we would be writing almost exclusively about travel in Asia, Europe and America at this time of year.

But 2025 is a little bit different. There is a lot going on right here at home, and we are happy to celebrate it.

Australia has a new cruise line and its first ship, Paspaley Pearl, will be sailing the Kimberley and Asia after her inaugural cruise in July. As you would expect with the pedigree of the Paspaley pearl family, she is small but beautifully formed.

Carrying just 30 guests, Paspaley Pearl is the product of the partnership between Pearl Expeditions and former Ponant Expeditions APAC chair and Orion founder Sarina Bratton.

Itineraries have been mapped out by well-known adventure guide Mick Fogg.

Another new vessel is trailblazing another exciting new venture for Australia. Australian Star, the only wood-fired, fivestar paddlesteamer in the world, is sailing four- and seven-night voyages along the Murray River. In more good news, Murray River Paddlesteamers has received backing from Australian travel company APT and the Victorian Government to build a second ship, Australian Sky, in 2027. They are also developing the riverbank to make the Murray a new river cruise destination.

Our wave season this year also has fresh backing. Oceania Cruises is moving its 1250-passenger Oceania Riviera to Australia for a five-month deployment. The luxury line which boasts “the best cuisine at sea” will offer small-group shore excursions including visits to local markets and truffle farms.

The ship will be serving Australia’s finest revered seafood and New Zealand’s world-famous lamb.

Itineraries will feature Mystery Island in Vanuatu, Dunedin in New Zealand, and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. She will be sailing from Sydney. Oceania will join Silversea, Viking, Regent, Ponant Expeditions, Scenic, Celebrity, Azamara, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, Holland America Line and Seabourn in sending vessels to homeport in Australia.

This exciting activity is in line with recent announcements from Cruise Lines International Association Australia, the ship owners’ lobby group, showing how much cruise tourism helps our local economy. The industry returned $8 billion to Australia in 2023/24 and sustained 26,000 jobs.

We are number four in the world in terms of passenger numbers, with 1.32 million Aussies taking a cruise in 2024, a 5.9 per cent rise on 2023. Some 247,000 overseas tourists came to cruise in Australia, New Zealand or the South Pacific, up 14 per cent from the year before.

“Australia has long been home to some of the world’s most dedicated cruise fans and the number of Aussie cruisers continues to rise,” says CLIA Australasia MD Joel Katz. “More Australians are cruising within our local region, and more are cruising in other parts of the world.”

Indeed, the rise of fly cruising is also reflected in the figures.

Some 240,000 of us took a long-haul route to our favourite holiday last year.

Looking forward, Royal Caribbean has confirmed it is opening the region’s first private beach club owned by a cruise line at Lelepa in Vanuatu. Indeed, the waitlist for the first cruises is now open for the 2027 launch.

This could create a profound change in Australian cruising, with large vessels leaving Brisbane for a holiday at Lelepa and returning to port without berthing at any other destination, much as the highly popular “weekend cruises” on Royal Caribbean’s largest ship, Icon of the Seas, does right now in the Caribbean.

1/ First sailings of a new expedition line

Pearl Expeditions will launch 25 cruises to some of the most sought-after and remote destinations in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Borneo in 2025/26. The elegant Paspaley Pearl motor yacht will kick off her season on July 31, taking 30 guests to the Kimberley, accompanied by four naturalists.

Oceania Cruises is set to homeport Oceania Riviera, which carries 1250 passengers and a crew of 800, in Australia.

She will sail exclusive, gourmet food-focused cruises from November 2025 through to March 2026. The 14- to 35-day itineraries sail from Sydney to Auckland and other ports in the region.

The WHITE LOTUS EFFECT

With a private jet tour of The White Lotus’s Four Seasons locations set to launch, Mark C O’Flaherty fears that its satire may be lost on some.

S

o, here we are, in The White Lotus season again. The third to be precise, with Parker Posey’s Mississippi accent grating away and a bunch of deeply miserable people spending five figures a skull for a trip to Instagram’s idea of Thai paradise – with all manner of melodrama and bloodshed stuffed into the infamously stingy annual leave allowance that Americans put up with. Will we, the audience, stay with it, as we did the first two? Probably. Will it change the destination it was filmed in, as it has before?

Definitely.

With overtourism as hot a topic (and not an unrelated one) as climate change, and the most commonly seen graffiti in many of the most photogenic parts of the world being a variation on “tourists go home”, promoting somewhere – even incidentally – that was already at capacity

decades ago is problematic. But that’s what The White Lotus does, despite the portrayal of high-end luxury being something shallow, or even a backdrop for something sinister.

Most of us would probably have a better time in these rooms and on these beaches than the characters in the show, but most of us can’t afford it. Know who can afford it? The people signing up for the Four Seasons’ The White Lotus-themed “World of Wellness” journey next year, which will whizz you around all of the hotels in the show to date, with five more thrown in for good measure, on a 20-day trip on the Four Seasons private jet. The cost?

About $294,000 per person.

The new series of The White Lotus was filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui. I’ve stayed there, and I can’t pretend it’s anything other than fantastic. It has true wow factor at

every turn, with grandiose landscaping and Bill Bensley architecture. But the island itself had reached saturation point some time ago.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is one of the most exclusive hotels in Thailand. The incredible villas you see on screen would still give you all the space you need to enjoy moments of tranquillity while armed robberies take place in the gift shop, but any idea you have about deserted, undiscovered beaches elsewhere is as fictional as the show’s storyline.

Fodors put Koh Samui on its list of 15 places you shouldn’t travel to this year because, like the other destinations on the list (including Bali), it has become overrun with tourists to the detriment of local life and infrastructure.

Some years ago, I drove around Sicily in a vintage Fiat 500, ate a lot of gelato, and shortlisted where I’d go back to and where I wouldn’t (and also where no sane person should try to venture with a hire car). The south-east was my favourite part of the island, although the starting point of Taormina wasn’t for me: too many tourists and one-way streets, although I had enjoyed staying in Cruise &Travel

the San Domenico Palace hotel, which several people had told me was their most beloved five-star resort on the planet.

I loved the outlandish opulence (a whole menu for mineral waters!) and the architectural details that pointed to the building’s former life as a convent. But now that hotel, which played the starring role in the show’s second season, along with all of Taormina and anything north of Modica, is off limits. I can’t go there. After the second season of the show dropped in 2022, the hotel where the story was set, and anywhere a short drive away from it, was ruined by men in polo shirts and their Ivy League teens with vocal fry. I didn’t even like the show that much. I only stayed with it to understand the Jennifer

Coolidge memes I kept seeing (and yes, okay, the last two episodes are golden).

The first season was shot in Hawaii at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, leading to a global partnership between HBO and the luxury hotel group. The forces of supply and demand now generate room rates at the San Domenico that start just shy of $4100 a night for bed and breakfast this summer. Which feels somewhat perverse, given the show is supposed to be satire, mocking the fragile egos of the super wealthy as they guzzle benzos while signing up for spa treatments that they are sure will transform their lives.

It’s interesting that the current season began with people running for cover from gunfire, which feels very different tonally from the more whodunnit-style setups of previous seasons.

And yet, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane has launched a White Lotus-inspired afternoon tea.

But this is television in the 2020s. We may no longer all watch shows at the same time, but when something has the impact of The White Lotus, it becomes a cultural phenomenon. It’s

like Anthony Bourdain’s favourite banh mi place in Vietnam, Bánh Mì Phuong. I’ve had the sandwich there and it’s fine. Would I queue up for it again? No. Thousands of other people will though. Long after Bourdain’s death, his recommendations get passed along online, along with Stanley Tucci’s favoured carbonara spots in Rome and the address of the façade of the Friends apartment in New York.

Truth is stranger than fiction, and the truth is that a lot of places are becoming hellish and ruinously expensive to visit, purely because too many people want to go for reasons that don’t quite make sense. If you’re looking for a Thai island, there are nearly 1500 to choose from. If Parker Posey has been filmed on one of them, then maybe try another. CT 15

• Royal Caribbean has confirmed Anthem of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas are coming to Australia for the 2026/27 cruise season. Itineraries visit destinations across Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Quantum of the Seas will sail out of Brisbane on a range of shorter three-day “cruises to nowhere”, as well as four-night cruises to Airlie Beach. There are also a few options for week-long sailings to other parts of Queensland and to the South Pacific.

Anthem of the Seas is set to sail its second consecutive season out of Sydney, with some short cruises on offer, sailing either to “nowhere” or to Eden. There are two fournight trips to Hobart and nine-night sailings to the South Pacific. There are also several nine- to 11-night cruises to New Zealand.

R

affles Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to open its first property in Italy, in the highly coveted Lake Como region. The former Grand Hotel Imperiale, a stunning Art Nouveau villa in Moltrasio, occupies one of the largest hotel shorelines in the region, and will be fully renovated and converted to a Raffles property. The hotel is expected to have 84 rooms, including 18 suites and two villas, many with stunning lake views. The hotel will feature the signature Raffles Long Bar and Writers Bar, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa and fitness centre, and a beach club. Guests will enjoy private lake access, including an exclusive arrival and check-in experience from the water. The hotel is slated to debut in 2027.

CIRCLE the white • Ponant’s luxury icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot, will circumnavigate Antarctica in early 2028. The itinerary will journey through remote regions, navigating 18,000 kilometres of coastline.

The ship will set off in January 2028 from Ushuaia, Argentina and sail westward to reach Hobart in 30 days. After a two-day stopover, it will then depart again towards its starting point, this time following the eastern coast of Antarctica over 34 days. Sales for this exclusive trip are scheduled to open in December 2025.

The wave of opulent ‘residences at sea’ out to redefine retirement has been joined by a new contender, an American property developer working with Norwegian Cruise Line.

rescent Seas, a venture by leading US real estate development company Crescent Heights, has announced its entry into the burgeoning market of residential cruising. It will launch next year with a ship which was formerly owned by NCL Holdings and sailed in the ultra-luxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ fleet.

Crescent Seas’ inaugural ship, The Navigator, is undergoing a substantial $75 million refurbishment to transform it into an exclusive residential community.

The Navigator will house 210 residences, with prices ranging from approximately $1.1 million to $12 million, depending on the size and appointments of the unit. These aren’t your typical cruise-ship cabins; expect high-end finishes and spacious layouts crafted by top-tier design firms Lissoni & Partners, Journey and MAWD.

/ A growing trend: life estates at sea

Crescent Seas is not alone in this innovative approach to luxury living. The concept of residential cruising gained prominence with The World, launched in 2002. This pioneering vessel offers residents the opportunity to “own” apartments and travel the globe continuously – although these are life-estates apartments, whose ownership ultimately remains with the ship owner.

• Three Princess ships have undergone dry docking: Emerald Princess, Grand Princess and Regal Princess. Of particular interest is Grand Princess, which will be returning to Australia for the 2026/27 season. Those who cruised on Grand Princess during the 2023/24 season will find the ship looking a bit different. General maintenance and upkeep are scheduled before the ship’s Alaskan season, but the ship was also in dry dock last year. New restaurants, a tea lounge and seven new suites were added, the casino was retouched and a new Piazza created.

Once back in Australia, Grand Princess will sail out of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

ROSEWOOD comes to Amsterdam

• Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has opened its first property in the Netherlands. The new Rosewood Amsterdam has 134 rooms and is housed within the 17th-century former Palace of Justice in the city’s Canal District. The hotel’s signature restaurant Eeuwen (“Centuries”) “highlights slow dining at its finest”. There’s also the Advocatuur bar with its own distillery, and The Court lobby lounge. The 560-square-metre Asaya Spa features a fitness centre, pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. The De Tuin gardens were designed by Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf. Another highlight is the artwork collection, including Studio Molen’s Statica at the entrance to the property.

uxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent is expanding its A&K Sanctuary portfolio with a new luxury retreat in Moab, Utah. Located at the gateway to the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, the retreat will offer a new way to explore Utah’s canyons. The property is designed for just 40 guests and is set to open in 2027.

The accommodation available is a mix of oneand two-bedroom

standalone suites; the retreat will be set among canyons and private trails.

Guests will have access to a curated program of experiences, ranging from hiking, biking and rafting to expert-led scenic drives, geological interpretation, cultural encounters and photography excursions.

The retreat will also offer a spa and relaxation areas, while a central lodge with panoramic canyon views will serve as the heart of the property.

•The private Likuliku Lagoon Resort in Fiji has reopened following a $7 million renovation. Along with new rooms and dining concepts, there is also an interactive conservation hub dedicated to marine and ecological preservation and community care. Every bure has been refurbished, with 11 Beachfront Bures offering private plunge pools. A new restaurant, Saluwaki, serves Fijian-inspired Asian tapas; the menu features locally sourced ingredients, some of which come from the resort’s gardens and surrounding waters. With only 28 seats available for an exclusive “once during a stay” highlight dining event, a Saluwaki experience will also be part of the resort’s all-inclusive dining offering.

• Scenic has announced new voyages for 2027/28 on Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II. The ships will visit 500 ports across 63 countries, offering cultural experiences as well as adventure-led itineraries. Guests can embark on expedition journeys – from the pristine wilderness of Antarctica and the Arctic Circle to the vibrant cultures of the Mediterranean and the crystalline waters of the Caribbean. Highlights of the 2027/28 collection include a Mediterranean expansion that takes in new destinations such as Alexandria; new itineraries spotlighting Italy’s hidden gems, including the stunning Aeolian Islands and lesser-known Adriatic treasures; and both ships deployed in Antarctica. hâteau de la Commaraine – sister hotel to the award-winning Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa – is scheduled to open later this year in the heart of Pommard. Just a stone’s throw from Burgundy’s wine capital of Beaune, the historic château is currently undergoing a total design transformation by architect Richard Martinet. The architecture will seamlessly marry historic restoration with modern extensions, each rooted in Burgundian tradition. Inside the château, the contemporary interiors will elegantly blend with the historical elements.

Singapore’s REVAMP

• Australian cruisers heading to Singapore in 2025 are in for a treat, with the Marina Bay Cruise Centre undergoing its most extensive revamp since opening in 2012. The $48 million makeover promises smoother embarkations, more seamless transfers and a stylish new terminal experience. The terminal’s capacity will jump from 6800 to 11,700 passengers, making dual ship calls far more manageable – and far more pleasant for travellers. A new check-in area will help streamline embarkations, cutting wait times and avoid crowding. Lounge facilities are also getting a facelift, with larger seating areas added to accommodate more passengers in comfort.

• Holland America Line, known for its extensive itineraries and mid-sized ships, has announced a six-week extension of its 2026 Europe Season. It includes additional departures for four cruises, featuring journeys to the Arctic, the Mediterranean, Norway and England. Each of the newly added cruises will sail aboard Nieuw Statendam, which can carry up to 2666 passengers.

The late-season addition of another Arctic cruise offers an exciting opportunity for travellers eager to witness the Northern Lights. One of the additional offerings includes a 14-day Arctic Journey and Northern Lights cruise departing Rotterdam on November 7. Next year is predicted to be a highly active period for Aurora Borealis.

Celestyal has launched four ARABIAN •new 14-night repositioning nights cruises as part of its winter sun

season in the Arabian Gulf. The sailings feature two new countries for the brand, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and four maiden calls: Aqaba in Jordan, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Muscat in Oman and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. The itineraries also mark the cruise line’s return to Egypt after a two-year break. One of the new itineraries is a 14-night Ancient Athens to Amazing Abu Dhabi sailing. Celestyal Journey will depart Athens on 22 November 2025, calling at Port Said, Jeddah, Dubai and more, arriving in Abu Dhabi in time for the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend. The Desert Days and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix itinerary sails December 7.

/ New kid on the block

A

nantara Palais Hansen Vienna has opened, with Vienna’s largest Presidential Suite and Michelin-starred dining. Anantara has reinvented the property, which was designed as a hotel in 1873, paying attention to the original marble floors, stucco ceilings and heritage-listed staircases. Each of the 152 guest rooms and suites feature marble bathrooms with Acqua di Parma amenities, soaring 3.5-metre ceilings and oversized windows. The 270-square-metre Presidential Suite has seven French balconies, a lounge with a grand piano, and dining and wellness spaces. There are three dining options, including Michelin-starred Edvard, and Anantara chefs lead cooking classes for the Spice Spoons experience. The hotel’s spa has a couple’s treatment suite and a women-only area, a Finnish sauna and a Hammam-style steam bath and sauna.

oyal Caribbean has revealed details of its private destination in Lelepa, Vanuatu, which will occupy 17 hectares of the island and become the first private cruise destination in the Southern Hemisphere. The port will be designed to take about 5000 passengers, enough for ships such as Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas. Guests will have to tender

to the port rather than dock directly at a wharf. There will be distinct villages, each offering a different feeling in a nod to the environment of the property – expect to find beach and forest villages. The island will have a floating bar, allowing passengers to swim out at the beach.

Guests will be able to snorkel, hike and shop for local arts and crafts.

Call of the KIMBERLEY • Ponant Expeditions Group will launch two new itineraries in the Kimberley this year, taking well-travelled adventure seekers from Fremantle to Broome and vice versa. The 11-day expedition cruise aboard Le Soleal will explore the west coast’s immaculate beaches, majestic landscapes and UNESCO World Heritage sites. In the Murujuga National Park on the Burrup Peninsula, guests will marvel at 40,000-year-old rock art. The new expedition cruise will visit Shark Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its incredible biodiversity. It will also call at Jurien Bay Marine Park, the only breeding area for Australian sea lions. Guests can experience the coral reefs and seabird breeding colonies in the Abrolhos Islands. At Ningaloo, they will be able to swim with whale sharks.

• Hook Island in the Whitsundays has revealed plans for an eco-lodge set to open in 2027. Epochal Hotels acquired the leasehold in 2022 with a vision of restoring the cyclone-impacted area. The eco-lodge will be home to 39 cabins, two dining experiences, wellness spaces, forest eco pools and adventure activities. Amenities will include the Arrival Pavilion, an Explorer’s Lounge, a Beach Club, a Nordic Cycle Forest Spa and Eco Pool, and the Clifftop Fine-Dining Restaurant, as well as areas for kids. The architecture of the lodge will aim to be cyclone-resistant and will be designed around the native trees, plants and habitat, reinforcing the island’s character.

Historic HUKA reopens

• New Zealand’s world-renowned Huka Lodge has reopened after a $25 million refurbishment of the 100-year-old property by Baillie Lodges. The floor-toceiling windows in the River Room offer an example of how the clever new design blends with its Waikato River surroundings. New to the main lodge are an expanded dining room and bar, which overlook the river and park-like gardens, while upstairs private lounge areas include The Loft and Piper Room, ideal for intimate dinners and special celebrations. There are three “rare and remarkable” bespoke experiences: the Craggy Range Culinary Escape with food, wine and heli flights; the Epic Rotorua culture and adventure day; and the Ultimate Huka Experience with heli lift-off.

/ Sonata to set sail

ceania Cruises has marked a milestone today with the ceremonial steel cutting of its latest ship, the Oceania Sonata.

The new Sonata Class will debut in 2027, followed by her sister ship, Oceania Arietta. The event took place in FincantieriMarghera shipyard in Venice, and with a capacity for 1460 passengers, Oceania Sonata will be the largest ship in the fleet.

Oceania Arietta is due to launch in 2029. Oceania Sonata will be the ninth ship in the Oceania Cruises fleet, and like its sister ships, the ship will focus on gastronomy and smaller ports. The ship will embark on its maiden voyage in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2027, but details of the itinerary have not been released.

uests aboard the new Australian luxury boutique yacht Paspaley Pearl will be treated to once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the Kimberley thanks to its unique heritage.

For a start, there is the yacht – it takes just 30 guests, yet has three bars, three lounges and two restaurants. Supplies might arrive by vintage Grumman Mallard Flying Boats courtesy of Paspaley Aviation. And you might visit one of Paspaley’s ships, where the famous pearls are prepared to adorn the rich and famous.

In the evening, guests can try the 10-person jacuzzi, kayak off the marine platform, or take one of four adventure Zodiacs for a wildlife 32

expedition with specialist guides before dinner cooked by a well-known chef from New South Wales’s Northern Rivers.

It’s a unique cruise experience no one can rival. And it’s already attracting a lot of attention. The Paspaley pearling family isn’t the only famous name associated with the new Pearl Expeditions venture. Sarina Bratton, the woman dubbed the “Queen of Australian Cruise”, who created Orion Expeditions 20 years ago, is the executive chair.

Bratton led APAC operations for small-ship luxury French line Ponant Expeditions for 11 years and has enormous expedition experience in the region. Orion was ground-breaking,

offering the first cruises to East Timor and sailing from Tasmania to Antarctica.

Bratton’s prodigious contacts book means many Paspaley Pearl dates are already filled in late August, September and early October (although a few suites remain).

For now, Bratton is a very hands-on executive chair. When she discusses the venture with Cruise & Travel, she is busily interviewing staff, having already hired a number of ex-Orion stalwarts. After all, cruising starts in the Kimberley on July 31 and will include Indonesian islands later. Bratton can’t hide the fact that she is relishing the challenge of setting up a new line.

/ Life on Paspaley Pearl

Paspaley Pearl is perfectly placed to offer some exceptionally unique itineraries.

“We’re not in the small ship environment.

We’re very much in the boutique environment, and that’s different altogether. Very, very different. It’s another segment of the industry that I believe will take greater presence over the coming years,” says Bratton.

Since the announcement of the new line, she has been heartened by the response from former partners.

“To me, it is really pleasing because people are saying, ‘Hey, remember us, we loved doing work with you at Orion, can we look at a partnership?

Can we do this? Can we do that?’ The early signs are really encouraging.”

Paspaley Pearl’s market includes special occasions where groups and parties will take part or all of the ship. At $2000 a night inclusive, Bratton likes to compare her offering to Baillie’s Lodges, where Southern Ocean Lodge might set you back $3200 a night.

Paspaley Pearl is currently priced below True North, for instance, a veteran Kimberley competitor, on which cabins can range up to $2300 a night per person.

Bratton recalls how local operators True North and Coral Expeditions both complained Orion might affect their businesses when she started, but so far she has helped lift the rates so they could charge more and increase the region’s reputation.

Elevating the Kimberley experience has been a lifetime mission for Bratton. She fell in love with the Kimberley when Nick Paspaley, one of the founders’ three children who now run the pearling empire, took her out to meet his pearling master, whom she employed as a pilot on the MV Orion’s first season.

/ Flexible dining options

Bratton believes the Paspaley Pearl kind of luxury is about a small number of people

sharing experiences. The 21 staff will multitask, more like a superyacht crew.

“You’ve got a lot of options,” she says. “We will be very flexible, but the way that we’re structuring it is we see that for breakfast and lunch, people would like to be in the Horizon Grill lounge bar area, just looking at the destination. We’ve put sliding glass doors on each side so that we can adjust the breeze coming through.

“We’ve got a live cooking station there for a chef. There will be champagne buckets and wine and beers on the table. There are two big communal tables on that side of the restaurant. You can help yourself to a glass of champagne or whatever you want.

“One deck down is the Ocean Restaurant.

That’s more sophisticated. That’s where we’ll have set menus.”

The captain is yet to be announced. Serge Dansereau of Sydney’s Bathers’ Pavilion fame is working with the team on menu design, but the name of the chef on board is being kept a secret. CT 33

orld cruises are fast becoming a popular way for Australians to explore the globe. While January might herald in the start of these round-theworld trips, in the last two months cruise lines have opened up their bookings for voyages in 2027 and 2028.

The demand is rising with Azamara and Cunard adding extra world cruises in the coming years. Royal Caribbean’s first world cruise was a 274-day round-trip voyage from Miami, and the company has hinted they might bring it back.

But what is a world cruise? These itineraries will visit at least three or more continents and have different start and end points.

While premium and contemporary lines have pioneered the likes of these lengthy itineraries, upper premium and luxury companies have also started to dabble.

Silversea’s 149-day Three Oceans voyage in 2027 visits more ports than any other voyage the line has previously made.

It’s Crystal’s most expansive world cruise to date: a 150-night journey departing in 2028 aboard Crystal Symphony.

This marks the line’s first world cruise since 2018 – and it will visit six continents across 84 destinations in 39 countries.

Aside from calling in on the colourful ports of the Caribbean and the breathtaking coastlines of South America, Crystal Symphony also visits the South Pacific, Southeast Asia and plenty of ports around the Australian coastline.

Among the many highlights are first-time port calls to Huahine, French Polynesia; Portland, Victoria; Kangaroo Island; Albany and Geraldton, WA; Nha Trang, Vietnam; and Mangalore, India.

The shore excursions will be created by Crystal’s sister company, Abercrombie & Kent, and there will be special celebrations for guests in Lima, Ho Chi Minh City and Dubai.

unset, and the al fresco Dusk Bar on Silver Ray was bathed in golden light. I was sipping a large G&T. The ship’s sax player, Mariia, was playing dreamy chillout tunes as the jagged Sierra Nevada mountains of Andalucia faded into the haze.

This, I thought to myself, is about as perfect as it gets. I was on a ship that ticked a lot of boxes for me – cool venues, outdoor living, great food, gorgeous balcony cabins – cruising around Spain, one of my favourite countries. My family has a house near Granada but I’d felt it was time to expand my horizons between our regular visits, which mainly consist of beach, BBQs and, in winter, skiing. This 11-night voyage would call at Cadiz, Tangier, Gibraltar, Malaga, Cartagena, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca, finishing in Barcelona.

The 728-passenger Silver Ray launched in summer 2024, an identical twin to Silver Nova. Like Nova, the ship embodies Silversea’s S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) program, a mission to dive deep into local cuisine through dining, cookery classes and excursions. This mission was quickly accomplished as for me, at least, food was central to everything.

One restaurant, the S.A.L.T. Kitchen, is dedicated entirely to the food of the region the ship is sailing through: in this case, Portuguese, Spanish and Moroccan dishes appeared on the menu every day. Wasting no time, my husband David and I

headed there on our first night. We’d just sailed from Lisbon in gusty winds, under rather disappointingly grey skies, but it was April, early in the season, and sunnier weather was promised as we headed south.

The first day’s specials were Portuguese. I kicked off with bolinhas de queijo de cabra – goat cheese fritters with a tangy tomato preserve – and dourada a lagareiro, sea bream with garlic roast potatoes and a lemony sauce with olives and coriander. Both were next level. The restaurant was quiet; I heard Italian, Australian and British voices but the American guests, by far the biggest group on board, were all (I presumed, snobbishly) eating steak in Atlantide, the very elegant main restaurant serving the kind of classics you’d find in a posh American grill.

We docked in Cadiz and the ship emptied; nearby Seville is a big highlight of any Spain cruise. Having been there recently, David and I decided to explore the much-underrated Cadiz instead. It was fabulous. How could it not be with so much history? This is western Europe’s oldest city, founded on a skinny peninsula in 1100 BC by the Phoenicians, who called it Gadir. It’s all jumbled, whitewashed buildings, hulking churches and leafy squares lined with vast trees brought as saplings from the New World some 300 years ago.

We admired ancient strangler figs the size of houses, their branches propped up by scaffolding, and soaked up the spring sunshine on Playa de la Caleta, the city’s beach. This spot actually doubled up as Cuba in the Bond film Die Another Day; it’s here that a bikini-clad Halle Berry emerged from the water, attracting the eye of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond.

While my primary reason for choosing this cruise was to learn more about Spain, I was thrilled to spend a day in Morocco, specifically Tangier. I’ve always wanted to see Chefchaouen, the Blue City, which lies in a bowl high in the Rif mountains, framed by sheer limestone cliffs. The whole of the medina, the original Cruise &Travel

Without doubt, the offerings in S.A.L.T. Kitchen, although if you’ve got the money, the Chef’s Table is worth it; they’ll adapt the tasting menu for special diets.

• What to pack

There’s no compulsory black-tie night on Silver Ray. Formal is optional so dressy eveningwear is fine for women and a jacket and shirt with collar is OK for men. All sorts of extras are provided on board, including sunblock by the pool and tasteful water bottles to keep.

• Secret tip

Silversea is all-inclusive, so a decent choice of restaurants, a wide range of drinks, tips, basic WiFi, most gym classes and the thermal suite in the spa are all covered, as well as some tours, according to your fare basis. You can have an excellent cruise without paying a cent extra. If you do want to try the extra-cost restaurants, bide your time and study the daily program. On my cruise, La Dame, for fancy French cuisine, was reduced from about $250 to about $155 on some nights, while Chef’s Table was down from about $280 to about $185.

part of the city, is a warren of streets and staircases painted an eye-popping shade of cobalt blue. Some say it’s the legacy of the Jews who fled here from Spain in the 15th century and wanted to feel closer to heaven. Others claim that the blue is simply to ward off mosquitoes. Either way, I was enchanted. Cats snoozed in the sunshine, colourful Berber carpets hung from every wall, and vendors touted leather bags and baskets of mountain herbs, the scent of which filled the air. It was a wonderful day – and by the end of it I could even pronounce the place name, “chefchow-un”.

If you book Silversea’s Port to Port fare, or the even more inclusive Door to Door, there’s an excursion included in every port. In Gibraltar, we joined the WWII tunnels tour, one of the included activities, and didn’t regret it, partly thanks to an excellent guide who took us through some of the labyrinth of tunnels inside the limestone monolith, once used to shelter troops and civilians and to store munitions.

We had another great guide on the included tour in Cartagena, where we explored the Roman Theatre Museum. This theatre was built in the first century BC but lay buried under centuries of development, undiscovered until 1988 when the first stones and artefacts were found during the restoration of a nearby church. Years of digging slowly back through time have uncovered the theatre in almost perfect condition.

In Malaga, we marvelled at the sombre religious art in the cathedral and clambered around the ramparts of Gibralfaro Castle, built by the Moors in the 10th century. The Moors ruled Andalucia for seven centuries and their legacy is everywhere,

David and I learned more about this back on board, when we joined a cookery class (included in the fare) in the S.A.L.T. Lab, making pollo en pepitoria. This dish of fried chicken in a deliciously gooey sauce containing almonds, wine, stock, saffron and hard-boiled eggs is an example of what people ate in Andalucia long before the days when potatoes and tomatoes arrived in Europe from the New World.

e spent so much time ashore, walking, that we tended to be lazy back on board. The pool is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen on a ship, but the air was still cool in spring, so instead, we’d ease our aching muscles in the infinityedge hot tub, The Cliff, on Deck 11. We did a Spanish conversation class one day but left the Name That Tune and daily quizzes to our fellow passengers. One night, the Sevilla Flamenco Company performed in the theatre and had the whole audience on their feet. This was no cheesy tourist show; the singing, dancing and guitar were intense, passionate and dramatic.

A great deal of time, I admit, was devoted to food: thinking about it, deciding where to go, savouring it. Silver Ray is that kind of ship. The Marquee, a pretty space on deck with sunlight filtering through slatted shades, did the best healthy breakfasts – green juice, Greek yoghurt with nuts and honey, spinach and mushroom quesadillas. We’d often come here for lunch, too, of salads and spectacular pizzas straight from the oven.

There were elaborate tapas in Silver Note, a sultry supper club with a fantastic jazz duo. We enjoyed a spectacular, 11-course wine-paired tasting menu at Chef’s Table – as the S.A.L.T. Lab becomes at night, when it’s an exclusive restaurant 76

for just 18. But we kept returning to the S.A.L.T. Kitchen, especially once I’d discovered the Moroccan platter and shlata chizo, a spectacular carrot, cumin and chickpea salad.

I finally tried the S.A.L.T. concept ashore in Palma, Mallorca.

We visited Oliver Moragues, a biodynamic winery high on Es Pla, the central plateau of Mallorca, with vines stretching away in every direction from a rambling, honey-coloured old farmhouse.

Local chef Deborah Piña Zitrone, whose mission is to preserve Mallorca’s culinary heritage, cooked arroz meloso, a creamy rice dish using bomba rice from Valencia, explaining about the island’s cuisine as we sampled the estate’s light, dry rosé.

Everybody else’s arroz meloso was flavoured with cuttlefish and sobrasada, a rich, pork-based sausage that appears on every menu here. My meat-free version was packed with flavours from fennel – using the bulb and the leaves – to artichoke heart, spring onion, peas and cauliflower. We ate at long tables in the shade of an ancient olive tree, sunshine filtering through the branches, a farm cat basking in a pool of warmth, before touring the vineyard in a happy, slightly boozy haze, with Gabriel Oliver, whose family has farmed this estate since 1511. I’d certainly saved the best till last. CT

he third Prima-class vessel from Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has taken all the best of her big sisters, Prima and Viva, and evolved into the more mature and sophisticated experience seen on Norwegian Aqua.

I’m on board the second “shakedown” sailing from Southampton for a fast and furious look at the new ship. Several travel agents are sailing with me and confirm my observation that while the ship is designed for the contemporary market, it looks and feels like a luxury ship.

NCL has taken guest feedback from its previous two vessels and applied its learnings to Norwegian Aqua. It’s an indication of a change in the NCL guest preference – there is a bigger focus on food, more deck spaces and larger public areas, especially in the outer areas of the ship. Not to mention the addition of suites in The Haven.

The new Aqua Slidecoaster is a drawcard, as it’s the first of its kind, replacing the race track of previous ships.

And while Norwegian Aqua might not be sailing Down Under (we wish), it is the kind of ship – with its 21 food and beverage offerings, activity centres and value proposition – that can attract Australians to the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line has always prided itself on its array of dining options, but there are now three new choices. There’s a dedicated Thai specialty dining venue, a plant-based eatery in the popular Indulge Food Hall, and Swirl bar, which is designed for wine tastings.

Sukhothai, located on Deck 17 near seafood restaurant Palomar, is a nod to authentic Thai cuisine. Jason Krimmel, NCL’s head of sales, marketing and brand communications, says the cruise line found pad Thai was one of the most popular dishes in the Indulge Food Hall (a dining area with several cuisine stations, where guests can order from iPads).

This spurred the line to develop a dedicated Thai restaurant, whose authenticity comes across in menu items such as the beef salad, spring rolls, an assortment of curries, as well as duck dishes and, of course, the famous noodle dish.

The bold flavours of the desserts are reminiscent of street food found in central Bangkok. You must order khao niew mamuang (mango with sticky rice) or the khanom chan (a steamed pandan pudding topped with coconut sauce, coconut chips and sesame).

Another new addition is The Planterie, which serves plantbased options, including poke bowls using soy-based products and a deliciously heart-warming lentil soup.

The NCL favourites have returned, the French Le Bistro: Cagney’s steakhouse, Palomar, Mexican cuisine at Los Lobos, Onda by Scarpetta and the Indulge Food Hall. Some of the most popular dining options have been expanded – Commodore has grown in capacity from 417 to 490 seats, while Hudson’s will be able to accommodate 470 diners, an increase from 458 on Norwegian Viva.

The popular Teppanyaki restaurant that has been a big hit across the fleet once had six stations for guests, but now has nine tables for groups of 18. And Le Bistro now has increased capacity from 82 to 96 guests.

The robust choice of dining options works well with NCL’s More at Sea promotion, where guests can choose up to five perks. The line currently offers an unlimited open bar, specialty dining credits, a free shore excursion credit, free WiFi on board or, on selected sailings, reduced fares for the third and fourth guest in a cabin.

the bar bigger and running parallel to the walkway. It’s the place to find NCL’s sustainable cocktails and, with more seating and warmer colours, it’s also a good place to grab a drink before dinner in one of the specialty restaurants or Hudson’s, the ship’s main dining room.

A new addition is the Swirl Wine Bar, which has blends from vineyards across the world – whether Spanish varieties, French vintages or Californian reds. The sommeliers host wine tastings as well as masterclasses.

The Whiskey Bar has relocated to Deck 6 near the brandnew Swirl Wine Bar, while Belvedere Bar has moved to Deck 8 at the heart of the atrium. Bands play throughout the day, and the bar has been designed as a hangout, both in the afternoon and late into the night.

/ Where you sleep

In keeping with the elegant tones of the public areas, Norwegian Aqua’s staterooms have all been designed with cream lounges as well as beige panelled walls. There are little adornments of colour – from the artwork behind the bed to the pillows on the sofas. What is particularly impressive is the size of the big, comfortable bathroom and the large balcony The Studio for NCL’s solo travellers is expansive, with the staterooms spread across two levels and a lounge for the exclusive use of those cruising by themselves.

The pièce de résistance is a much larger Haven, NCL’s shipwithin-a-ship concept. The cruise line has made the move to now include 123 suites in The Haven, which is a step up from 107 suites on Viva.

New for the brand are the two- and three-bedroom Duplex Suites. These expansive two-storey accommodation offerings feature separate living and dining areas, three bathrooms, a balcony and three bedrooms, perfectly designed for multigenerational families.

The verdict

• Overall, the ship is a nod to a more sophisticated version of the Prima-class vessels, and the design team has taken into account the flow of the ship – you’ll find yourself moving effortlessly from one bar to the next, before heading off to dinner.

Aqua is designed to accommodate every type of cruiser, and while some people might miss the colourful motifs, the more muted palette makes for a welcome change. The ship is a lot calmer and more relaxing.

/ The entertainment

NCL has moved away from licensing Broadway shows and has started to invest heavily in its own productions. The highly popular Fleetwood Mac tribute show has now moved from the Syd Pour bar to a full-scale musical in the interactive theatre, where you can hit the dance floor and boogie away.

The best show, though, is Revolution: A Celebration of Prince.

The musical details the life of the famed pop star and, combined with great talent, sparkling costumes and a rocking band, it’s a well thought out and well-constructed show. It really hits the high notes, and there are some truly powerful performances from the cast and dancers.

NCL has been working on 112 new show and experience projects, which will roll out across different ships by March 2026. Interestingly, the line has taken on guest feedback and is accommodating cruisers’ desire for more music they recognise and shorter shows.

/ The Aqua Slidecoaster and activities

There are plenty of activities on board – and they’re not all just for the children. NCL has brought back the top deck games area, which has a larger putt-putt course, pickleball courts and pingpong tables.

The hybrid rollercoaster-waterslide known as the Aqua Slidecoaster has replaced the famous racetrack. The team thought it was time to try something new, and the novel attraction lives up to the hype. Guests are seated in rafts and then propelled through slides that twist around the ship’s funnel.

I tried the Slidecoaster and survived. Even sailing in five-degree weather on the North Atlantic Ocean, it was great fun.

/ The Norwegian Aqua space

Taking inspiration from the ship’s name, there are lovely wave motifs woven into the lighting, carpet and décor, as well as in the artworks on board. The colour palette is more muted on this ship, with dark blue, brown, tan and beige tones on the walls and carpets, accented with warm greens and copper-coloured chairs and banquettes as well as splashes of bright-gold lighting.

Norwegian Aqua feels welcoming – especially the atrium, which is the heart of the ship. The tall, light-filled space is also home to the concierge and shore excursion- and guest servicesdesks. Across Decks 6-8 of the atrium you’ll also find bars and lounges, as well as a very popular Starbucks. CT

ustralian travellers are trending towards longer cruise holidays, further afield, and they’re happy to fly to get there. One in 20 Aussies took an ocean cruise last year, and the Mediterranean ranked as the most attractive destination after New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Armed with this info, I felt pretty smug boarding the latest Princess cruise ship in the fleet to undergo a makeover, after two weeks in dry dock to transform her original Chinese branding to a more Western look and feel. While two weeks doesn’t sound like much, a phenomenal amount of work was carried out on Majestic Princess, including restaurant transformations, social and event space upgrades, and the creation of brand-new shopping venues.

The excitement of this trip for me wasn’t just about being one of the first to experience the ship since the refurbishment. And it wasn’t just about the chance to cruise around the stunning Mediterranean in the height of Europe’s spring, either. It was that this was first cruise on which I had brought my teenage daughter Issy with me – and I was going to experience the destinations and the novelty of cruising through her eyes.

Let’s start with the ship. She was originally built in 2017 for the Chinese market, but grew into one of the most popular ships among Australians. However, after seven years of travelling around Australia, New Zealand, Asia and beyond, it was time for a refresh.

It was not difficult to see why she was so popular. Her charm

comes from her size, with a maximum capacity of 3560 guests, which is considered medium in the large-ocean-fleet scheme. At no

This may be a surprise, but my favourite dining experience wasn’t in one of the main specialty venues.

The Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar on Deck 7, overlooking the piazza, was a fantastic, intimate dining experience.

My daughter and I simply arrived early and had a seat at the glass bar overlooking the chefs as they prepared fresh sushi. We ordered the set menu for $55 per person, which included edamame, seaweed salad, pickled vegetables, sushi, sashimi and nigiri – all extremely fresh and exquisitely styled to match the modern decor. The icing on the cake for me was the selection of virgin mocktails that were not available anywhere else on board.

• Favourite shore excursion This one was a clear winner, so to speak: Olympia Olympics for Families.

Arriving in the Greek port of Katakolon, we chose the guided tour of the ancient ruins of Olympia and the Temple of Zeus. While it was fascinating to gaze at the historic site, it was the family fun that really brought this shore excursion to life for

Issy and I. All tour guests are invited to participate in a re-enactment of a short Olympic running race along the original racetrack. This became such a highlight of the day, with my clever daughter winning the overall event and being crowned with a wreath of olive leaves.

Her smile was everything.

• Secret tip

No matter how long you’re on board for, it’s always nice to have clean laundry. Most people don’t know there’s a laundry room on every deck of the staterooms for passengers to do their own washing. It is machineoperated and you can simply use your medallion to pay (roughly €3 per load). My secret tip is to bring your own little laundry liquid sachets or tablets to save on the extra €3 a pop for these – and more importantly, be prepared to play nicely with the other passengers if there’s a line up for the machines. This is a great opportunity to chat and meet other guests and make new friends. But I did hear a rumour that two guests almost came to blows over the ironing board in the lead up to formal night. Either way, the laundry room is clearly the secretly interesting place to be!

The cruise

She also has a great appeal for all age groups, and hence she is popular with multi-generational cruisers seeking the perfect holiday for the whole family.

While Princess might not be an obvious choice for children and teenagers, there are activities and kids’ clubs on board. The kids’ clubs cater to all age groups, and the swimming pools and entertainment areas are all family-friendly, but there is still the option of adults-only zones and quiet spaces such as The Enclave in the Lotus Spa and the quieter area of the Hollywood Pool Club.

But the fun is also on shore, where around the Mediterranean, Princess offers shore excursions suitable for the entire family.

In terms of layout, she is a fabulous ship, ticking all the boxes. And the refresh of the dining venues simply lifted her appeal. Harmony restaurant (Chinese) has been replaced by Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, the ever-popular O’Malley’s Irish Pub has been added, along with Alfredo’s Slice, Salty Dog Café, Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar, Bellini’s and upgrades at The Catch by Rudi.

And while I was delighted by all the culinary options and upgrades on board, Issy was far more excited by the novelty of cruising. It took her roughly 24 hours after we boarded the ship in Athens to state the obvious reason why cruising has become such an obsession for so many global travellers: you unpack once, and you wake up every morning in a new destination. Seeing her face as we opened our curtains on the first morning and looked out over the Greek island of Mykonos was a moment I’ll forever treasure.

Into the sunset

(Olympia), Corfu, Kusadasi, Naples and Rome… every single port held a sense of possibility for adventure and exploration. We enjoyed a combination of pre-booked tours in some ports and simply did our own thing in others. Each and every day was priceless and memorable for so many reasons.

One highlight shore excursion was the Catamaran Coastal Cruise and Swim in Corfu. This half-day adventure gave us a completely different perspective on the island with a personalised adventure on the water: snorkelling and jumping from the bow of the boat, aqua-beaches and coves; dropping anchor across from Venetian walls and former royal summer palaces; and a delicious local

Greek lunch on board.

One of the simple pleasures was boarding the ship again at the end of each day, arms loaded with souvenirs. Princess ships always have a way of making me feel at home, no matter where I am sailing across the world. They’re not the most luxurious or the most ostentatious, but they are the friendliest and the most inviting. Random elevator conversations, chats with your deckchair neighbours by the pool, laughs with your loved ones while watching movies under the stars, jokes with your waiters at dinner, morning greetings from your friendly coffee barista at the International Café: these are all the little moments that make a holiday memorable and meaningful.

And like any true Aussie travellers, we took advantage of our fly-cruise trip in the Mediterranean by extending our stay in Rome at the tail end. With new friendships forged on the cruise, we met up and explored the cobblestone laneways of Rome, the iconic landmarks of the Vatican and Spanish Steps, the sunsets from the rooftop bars and the tiny boutiques where we stock up with mementos of a magical and majestic mother-daughter holiday we will cherish forever. t’s often in the unlikeliest of moments, at the most unconventional of hours, that the true spirit of a place reveals itself. PLANNING YOUR POLYNESIAN ESCAPE Best times to visit

• French Polynesia enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round. However, the most popular time to visit is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. These months offer less humidity, ample sunshine and pleasant temperatures, making them ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the lagoons. The shoulder months of April and November can also be excellent.

What to pack

• Think light and breezy! Pack lightweight cotton and linen clothing, swimwear (multiple sets are a good idea), and a sarong or pareo – a versatile local garment. Include sun protection essentials: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen. Mosquito repellent is also advisable, especially for evenings and inland excursions. For footwear, sandals, thongs and a pair of reef shoes or water sandals for exploring lagoons and rocky shores are perfect. While the atmosphere is generally casual, a slightly smarter outfit for evenings at some resorts or restaurants might be appreciated.

Getting to Papeete from Australia

• Reaching the capital, Papeete, and the gateway to French Polynesia, Faa’a International Airport (PPT), from Australia typically involves a connecting flight, as direct services are not consistently scheduled. The most common and often most efficient route is via Auckland, New Zealand. Major airlines such as Air New Zealand, Qantas (often in codeshare with other carriers) and Air Tahiti Nui operate flights from key Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, connecting through Auckland to Papeete.

Some ships are a brand in themselves. Le Paul Gauguin, the 28-year-old Queen of French Polynesia, is one such vessel.

Peter Lynch takes a look inside the refurbished treasure.

T

he Grand Dame of French Polynesian cruising has just emerged from a multi-million-dollar Singapore refit that has transformed restaurants, created a new and luxurious pool deck and introduced eight connected suites for the new trend of multi-generational or group cruising.

She is as bright as a button and almost as good as new (there is another refit down the track to take care of even more upgrades).

Cruise & Travel was in Darwin for a sneak peek at her new interiors.

Her wonderful woodwork and carpentry in the owner’s suites remain works of art. Her beautiful murals, representing Tahiti’s rich greens and yellows, continue to adorn the Piano Bar and traditional French main dining room, L’Etoile.

This ship was specifically designed to sail 330 guests through the stunning lagoons of French Polynesia and the azure waters of the South Pacific. Her shallow draft of just over five metres means she is perfect for sneaking into the lagoons in safety, and her marine deck allows for watersports and diving.

Le Paul Gauguin has seen an increase in families on board since launching its

successful free Moana Explorer Program in 2020. The program provides activities for children aged six to 15 years old, making Paul Gauguin Cruises the only year-round cruise line in French Polynesia to offer familyfriendly experiences.

The changes couldn’t have come at a better time. While Le Paul Gauguin has sailed French Polynesia almost alone for two decades, suddenly pretenders are on the horizon.

This year will see a record number of lines heading to Tahiti. And we know why.

Pool Bar: The Pool Bar now features the same white wood-carved screens as Le Grill. There is new lighting for a soft, ambient evening glow.

New soft furnishings: The ship’s public spaces and staterooms have reupholstered furnishings, new carpeting in a tropically chic palette, and woodwork restorations, ensuring a modern and elegant look.

Sustainability upgrades: Reflecting Ponant Expeditions’ commitment to environmental sustainability, Paul Gauguin Cruises will introduce technology to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Energy performance upgrades include advanced heat-recovery systems, efficient chillers and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system to generate electricity from heat. A new seawater treatment system will produce fresh water on board, while the Nordaq filtration system will eliminate plastic water bottles. Additional waste-management improvements will include a glass crusher and a cardboard compactor for efficient recycling.

French Polynesia is fast becoming a favourite cruise destination, with more luxury lines offering departures from Papeete. Isabelle James reports.

CALL of the WILD River cruising is not just about castles, gardens, cooking classes and vineyard excursions.

Bernadette Chua finds a new frontier is emerging, one where river cruising meets expedition travel.

T

here’s expedition cruising – then there is expedition cruising. Known for its small ship cruising in remote areas of the world like the Peruvian Amazon, Lindblad Expeditions has recently announced it will be expanding its river expeditions… to Europe.

But the all-important question is: how can an adventure brand turn a European river cruise into a foray into expedition?

Lindblad Expeditions is partnering with Transcend Cruises, a charter company with a fleet of new-build luxury ships designed for

immersive, active travel. This collaboration will introduce a series of customised itineraries, which Lindblad claims “venture beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, offering a more profound and engaging experience”.

While the company also claims it will be targeting more active river cruisers with its expedition guides and National Geographic historians and naturalists, it does make us wonder – how adventurous can a European river cruise really be?

Meanwhile, other cruise lines are venturing into expedition river cruising with lines announcing new ships for South America and refurbishments of vessels already in operation.

Abercrombie & Kent, andBeyond and CroisiEurope are launching new vessels in the rainforests of Peru, while AmaWaterways has recently launched a vessel in Colombia.

In other regions, cruise lines, including Viking, are expanding their presence in Southeast Asia, particularly on the Mekong, and in Egypt.

/ COLOMBIA

AmaWaterways has successfully launched its first river cruise ship, AmaMagdalena, on Colombia’s Magdalena River. It is the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to navigate these waters, and the launch marks a historic moment for the region which is expected to benefit from the introduction of river cruise tourism. In addition, the cruise line is also celebrating the expansion of its portfolio outside its current regions of operation, Asia, Europe and Africa.

AmaWaterways Managing Director in Australia and New Zealand Steve Richards says, “Everyone was incredibly excited to see the first departure of our long-awaited river cruising on Colombia’s Magdalena River.”

He says there had been strong bookings for Colombia from the “well-travelled” cruiser looking for something new.

AmaMagdelana is designed for just 60 guests, but what is notable about AmaWaterways’ launch in Colombia is the consultation and involvement with the local community. The ship was built in collaboration with local craftspeople and woodwork specialists, and excursions allow guests to interact with local communities.

The launch was not without obstacles. The ship was originally forecast to launch earlier this year, but due to operational setbacks from being built in Colombia, AmaWaterways delayed the first sailing this month as the landings and piers were also being constructed from scratch.

AmaWaterways says it had anticipated there would be obstacles with the launch due to the remote pioneering efforts involved with such a venture. “Until now, exploring the Magdalena River region with comfort and ease was complicated, if not impossible,” says Kristin Karst, co-founder and executive vice-president of AmaWaterways.

“Colombia is not known for having the infrastructure available for this new project, and as such, AmaWaterways flew European engineers and welders to help develop a local skill set. The government of Colombia is also helping,” she says.

Local communities have been working with AmaWaterways to develop nine customdesigned excursion boats that will allow guests to access secluded areas of the river, those boasting rich biodiversity and still largely unexplored by holidaymakers.

/ PERU

The depths of the Amazon River are still largely undiscovered by cruise companies. Lines such as Aqua Expeditions and Delfin Amazon Cruises rule the region. But the launch of A&K’s first purpose-built ship, Pure Amazon, heralds in a new era of expedition cruising, coupled with high-end luxury when you’re back on board.

The ship will have 10 suites and two single cabins on board. Expert guides will lead daily excursions that showcase the Peruvian rainforest, including guided nature walks to spot sloths, monkeys and brilliantly hued birds; trips through lagoons in search of pink river dolphins; or even fishing for piranhas. There will also be visits to riverside villages in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.

The 15-suite &Beyond Amazon Explorer is due to set sail in September 2026. There are a selection of three- and four-night itineraries, or a full seven-night itinerary.

Luxury, family-run Delfin Amazon Cruises is on a major drive to entice Australians to discover the secrets of the Peruvian Amazon aboard its recently refurbished, flagship Delfin I, and its latest vessel, Delfin III. “Many Australians are under the wrong impression that it takes too long to fly to South America. In fact, it takes four hours less to fly from Sydney to Lima than Sydney to Rome,” says CEO and owner Aldo Macchiavello.

/ EGYPT

Viking’s expansion in Egypt is going at a rapid pace, with the line launching a 10th ship on the Nile this year. The demand for Egypt has grown – in the immediate years post-pandemic, the region received unprecedented interest in its river cruises due to travellers wanting to tick off bucket-list experiences and take advantage of fewer crowds. Its popularity also received a boost with the release of the film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

While turmoil in the Middle East might have since slowed bookings, it hasn’t halted Viking’s expansion plans. Viking Thoth was floated out earlier this year and is set for delivery in October.

“Egypt is a country of profound historical and cultural significance, which makes it a destination of great interest to our guests. With two new ships, the Viking Thoth and the Viking Amun, debuting in 2025, we are very proud to continue expanding our elegant fleet,” says Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking.

/ SOUTHEAST ASIA

AmaWaterways is adding a second river ship to its Mekong River trips, a popular cruise with Australians. AmaMaya will join the line’s AmaDara and will sail on its first seven-night itinerary through Cambodia and Vietnam on 3 August 2026.

Some of the shore excursions include visits to local workshops and monasteries, a Buddhist blessing ceremony and learning about the region’s history.

AmaMaya will operate a total of 22 sailings in 2026 and upwards of 38 in 2027. Land extensions are available in several cities, including Siem Reap, home of the splendid Angkor Wat temple complex. CT

• Uniworld Boutique River Cruises says its Douro River cruises have been so popular that it has added another sailing, departing 19 October 2025 and cruising the Portugal, Spain & the Douro River Valley itinerary. The cruise will sail through UNESCO-designated wine regions with rich heritage and history.

Portugal’s Douro River Valley, noted by UNESCO for its 2000 years of wine-making and its “cultural landscape of outstanding beauty”, is the only place in the world that can legally produce port wine. The region abounds with wine-producing farms called quintas offering private tastings. Porto is synonymous with fortified wine but also offers awe-inspiring architecture, while other ports of call along the river boast castles and monasteries.

/The Vikings are coming

iking will expand its fleet with new vessels bound for the rivers of Europe, Egypt and Southeast Asia. In Europe, the expansion will be seen along the Rhine and Main rivers, which will be sailed by the new Viking Honir, Viking Eldir and Viking Annar. The new Viking Dagur will join the fleet on the Danube. The Viking Gyda will

expand the fleet on the Douro River, while Viking Nerthus will sail the Seine River. Two new ships will join the Nile River fleet, Viking Amun and Viking Thoth, which will sail the popular Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. Viking Tonle will double Viking’s fleet on the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, joining its identical sister ship Viking Saigon.

DANCING in the DARK

• In a bid to attract younger cruisers, Avalon Waterways has launched a new After Dark program designed for guests to explore cities and towns by night – and they can even bring the entertainment back on board the ship. There will be karaoke and trivia, as well as dancing in the Panorama Lounge and Sky Grill dinners on the top deck. “We will have a new position called the Entertainment Host,” says Avalon Waterways President Pam Hoffee. “We’ve even asked some of our crew who might like to DJ whether they want to be part of the After Dark program.”

• Tauck is adding new Christmas Market sailings along France’s famous Seine River to meet the demand for holiday market cruises. This will be Tauck’s first foray into French waterways with the market holiday theme, adding to Europe’s already popular Christmas cruises. The Seine addition comes as part of Tauck’s continued expansion, which now includes France’s waterways in addition to rivers in Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as two holiday cruises on the Danube and Rhine rivers.

The first cruises will depart from November 2026, with a total of eight cruises up until the end of December 2026.

/Sky joins Star

M

urray River Paddlesteamers has received government backing for its plan to launch a second new ship, Australian Sky. The company has been given the green light from the Victorian Government to transform the Murray into Australia’s river-cruising hub. It is already building the 35-metre-long PS Australian Star, which will be the largest paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere and the only wood-fired, five-star accommodated paddlesteamer in the world.

Demand for Australian Star has been strong, with 85 per cent of sailings already sold for 2025-26.

Australian Sky will set sail in 2027 and will connect Mildura with Adelaide on three- to 11-night cruises.

Cox likes to joke that APT has raised the bar – literally.

The audacious feat is a testament to APT’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of luxury river travel. The concept of a physically elevating venue challenged conventional river cruise ship designs.

“The whole venue raises from the Upper Deck to the Sun Deck. Imagine when you have docked in Budapest, and that becomes the star venue at the back of the ship. You can sit there at sunset and have one of our various specialty cocktails,” says Cox. This smooth and seamless operation takes less than two minutes. The result is a transformation from an enclosed dining space to an open-air oasis, providing breathtaking vistas of the city’s iconic landmarks or the charming village outlooks along the itinerary.

“As far as we’re aware, no one else in the world has a venue with full hydraulic elevation integrated into river cruise design,” says Cox proudly, anticipating it will be “the envy of every other river cruise”.

Collaboration / A chef’s vision to a T

Monique Lane, Director of Fellow Hospitality, has worked on some of the most hip and iconic bars and restaurants around Sydney and Melbourne: think Bar Lettera in North Sydney and Crystalbrook Riley in Cairns.

Yet creating the distinctive dining spaces aboard APT’s revolutionary river ships presented an entirely different challenge.

Lane developed the comprehensive hospitality vision for both vessels, conceiving six unique culinary concepts. How did that translate to the water? Working within a river ship’s intimate proportions while creating varied dining venues, each with distinctive character and culinary identity, required considerable ingenuity.

“The APT Ostara and APT Solara river ships are unlike anything else I’ve ever worked on.

We’ve all brought our collective experience in hotels and hospitality on board, and I think we’ve created something really unique,” says Lane.

“One of the key considerations when creating these different spaces was the knowledge that our guests want variety. They’re on board for 15 days, and not every day should be the same.

“Sometimes you want to sit somewhere really relaxed and comfortable and not have to make any choices. Other times you want to feel really spoilt and special.

“We’ve designed these spaces with differentiation in mind so that each venue gives you a really different experience depending on your mood and how you’re feeling that day.

“In the hospitality industry, we always work within the seasons, and we’ve brought that thinking on board the new APT river ships. For the first time, we’re creating seasonal menus that really work with what’s freshest and locally available at the time.”

I

t’s the start of the river cruise season, but despite the cold weather, the sun is shining and spirits are high.

Cruise & Travel is on board Avalon Waterways’ Avalon Artistry II, which is fresh from a makeover.

But it’s not the ship’s recent glow up (or the French wine) that has tongues wagging – but Avalon’s new itinerary sailing the Garonne and Dordogne rivers in France, an area which was once typically known for barge cruising.

Travelling to France has become increasingly popular globally over the past 18 months. The Bonjour Bordeaux: Châteaux, Wineries & Charming Villages itinerary, which was launched this year, is Avalon’s response to the rising demand.

The company has also launched three new itineraries – French Masterpiece: Paris, Normandy & Bordeaux; France, Uncorked: The Rhône, the Seine & Bordeaux; and Vineyards, Châteaux & Bordeaux, any of which can be combined with the new eight-day cruise.

Cruise & Travel was on a condensed four-day taster of the itinerary, which sails the Garonne and Dordogne. / DAY 1 It’s a sunny day in Paris when we arrive, and it’s a pristine time to visit France – the country and city are not teeming with crowds. Paris is gorgeous during March, with warm weather during the day and cooler evenings where you’ll only need a light jacket.

As part of Avalon’s pre-cruise extension, we are staying for two nights at the five-star L’Hôtel du Collectionneur Paris, just near the Champs-Elysées. We are met at Charles De Gaulle Airport by our Avalon Waterways guide, who picks up the group and organises the transfer to the hotel – all very seamless.

The first day, we hit the cobblestoned streets for a bit of shopping and champagne to get reacquainted with the City of Lights. The hotel is near restaurants and bars, and just a 10-minute walk to the Arc de Triomphe and luxury brand stores such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior. The beauty of Avalon’s pre-cruise offering is that you can wander the city on your own time or take part in the line’s excursions. / DAY 2 After a good night’s rest, Avalon has planned a jam-packed day of activities. These optional excursions take inspiration from the line’s Active and Discovery shore excursions, designed for those who want something a bit more physical, or those who want to bathe in the culture of the destination.

In the morning, we head on board our private coach for a driving tour of Paris with a local guide. We take in the sights of the Champs-Élysées, the Eiffel Tower and the Place de la Concorde while we’re told about the history of the City of Lights. After taking photos, we stop at the newly reopened Notre-Dame to look at the renovations.

The afternoon is then spent exploring Montmartre, known as the city’s red-light district and famous for can-can girls and, surprisingly, fantastic seafood brasseries. La Mascotte on Rue des Abbesses has been an institution in the arrondissement since 1910, held under the stewardship of the same family for the last three generations. The plateau de fruits de mer is piled high with scampi, langoustines and oysters from Normandy and Burgandy.

In the evening, Avalon arranged a special night at the Moulin Rouge. The tickets include a lively show of scantily clad dancers, adorned in sequins and feathers, coupled with a traditional French dinner.

Avalon Artistry II

• The ship Originally built for the Rhine, the ship’s recent renovations have made her fit for the Garonne and Dordogne rivers.

The 166-passenger vessel has had a top-to-toe refurbishment – everything from the furnishings in the public spaces to upgraded internet and a sky deck with all-new furnishings.

What sets Avalon apart from its competitors is that every aspect of the ship is designed to take in the scenery along your itinerary.

There are several public areas on the ship, including the Panorama Lounge, a convivial area which can fit all the guests at any one time and where the crew hosts everything from yoga classes in the morning, through to a light lunch and then evening cocktails with live music. The Panorama Lounge connects to both the concierge area, the meeting point for shore excursions, and the Observatory Lounge – an outdoor sitting area at the front of the ship.

In the back of the ship, the Club Lounge is notorious for its cookie jar and free coffee. With plenty of comfortable lounges, it’s the perfect place for a middle-of-the-night hot chocolate when the jet lag hits hard.

• The suites The ship has 52 Panorama Suites, each offering 18.5 sq m of living space, which is about 30 per cent larger than other river lines. The cabins make up about 80 per cent of the ship, and their most stunning features are the floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall panoramic windows that also act as balconies.

Inside the cabins, there is a large desk and a lounge area where any meal can be delivered while you enjoy the view of the rolling vineyards.

But my favourite part of the cabin is in the bathroom. There is a huge vanity with plenty of storage space. But what’s so thoughtful is the different coloured towels – white for men and brown for women, so the remnants of make-up can’t be seen.

• The dining and food Breakfast, lunch and dinner are taken on board the ship. The culinary team serves regional dishes for lunch and dinner, incorporating wines from the area and freshly baked bread and patisseries from local providores.

Breakfast starts at 7am; lunch at midday; and then dinner sittings run 7pm-8:30pm. There are no allocated sitting times, so you can wander in at your leisure.

Breakfast is a wide selection of buffet items, with fruit; yoghurt; hot choices such as eggs, bacon, sausages and mushrooms; and a daily omelette bar.

Lunch can be served in the Panorama Lounge, with soup, salad and sandwiches – or if you want something more substantial, the main dining room’s buffet serves dishes such as cassoulet and beef bourguignon, and there are even ramen stations.

There are always soups, salads and lighter options, and wine and beer are served during lunch and dinner. While there is an array of desserts, don’t go past the homemade ice cream.

Dinner is usually a four-course meal with a soup or salad. An example would be: beef consommé, a starter of scallops or scampi with risotto, a main of lamb racks with ratatouille, and desserts of crème brûlée and locally sourced cheese.

For those watching their figures, there are lighter options, such as grilled chicken or fish with vegetables.

Voyage If you’re not a booze hound, Bordeaux is also known for its chocolatiers. In these quaint shops, you’d expect Juliet Binoche to pop out from behind the counter like in the 1988 French period drama, Chocolat.

The afternoon excursion is spent in Blaye where Les Kellen, a charming South African who is renowned in the area for his exquisite palette and wicked sense of humour, runs the Etalon Rouge Vineyard and Winery and Le Petite Cave Wine Bar. He and his gorgeous wife, Clarissa, an artist, also own many of the surrounding buildings, where you can rent out rooms, apartments and studios. They take us on a tour of their properties (again, with a glass of wine in hand), as well as Clarissa’s gallery, which has a collection of classic cars and motorcycles, Here, we get a chance to paint and add something to her collection.

AVALON ARTISTRY II / DAY 3 The following morning, we check out of L’Hôtel du Collectionneur Paris to head towards Bordeaux. The easiest way to get from Paris to Bordeaux is a two-and-a-half-hour train journey. But Avalon organises our bags to be driven down by truck – so all we need to bring on the TGV is our hand luggage.

It’s a pleasant and quick ride, and when we reach Bordeaux we are met by an Avalon guide who takes us to the beautiful Avalon Artistry II, docked alongside the picturesque town.

Arriving in Bordeaux, we have some time to explore the town, which is famous for its 18th- to 19th-century mansions and beautiful public gardens. The walkable city is filled with back lanes brimming with wine bars and cafes. There are barely any cars in the centre of the city, so it’s a great place to explore by bike. Back on the ship, we head up to the sun deck to watch the sail off from Bordeaux. / DAY 4 Every day, guests are given an option for Active, Discovery or Classic excursions depending on interests and physical ability.

Morning and afternoon excursions are usually available.

It’s 10:30 in the morning and I have a glass of wine in hand. On a tour of Chateau Siran in Medoc, we learn about Bordeaux’s storied history of winemaking as we sip on the vineyard’s highly regarded 2017 vintages paired with smooth comtes and bries.

We learn about the complex skill required to create the velvety fruit blend, combining the perfect balance between tannins, acidity and alcohol.

/ DAY 5 The following day in Libourne, our Discovery Tour is led by Catherine, a bubbly British woman who met her French husband three decades ago. “It was his cooking that made me want to stay,” she says.

The pretty commune is the gateway to the famous SaintÉmilion and Pomerol region. While the others head on a bike riding and hiking excursion to Saint Émilion, the sights and sounds of the local market are too tempting for me.

Catherine takes us around the bustling square, where there are dozens of producers selling everything from rotisserie chicken to foie gras to spring white asparagus. The pièce de résistance, though, is the beautifully shucked oysters: for about $5.50 you can pick up a dozen, freshly shucked. My advice: bring cash to the markets so you can pick up some fresh produce or bottled goods to bring home.

Back on the ship, Avalon invited pastry masters to show us how to make a canelé, a small French pastry flavoured with rum and vanilla, with a soft and tender custard centre and a dark, thick, caramelised crust. After the tasting is done, with a cup of tea, we wolf down the sweet little pastries. / DAY 6 Our final day in Bordeaux is spent bike riding around the city on one of Avalon’s Active shore excursions. We are met by the very chic Joanna and Bruno – both wearing beautiful fedoras and coats, while we don our daggy activewear – who will be our guides. Born and bred in Bordeaux, Joanna takes us around the city, winding our way through the backstreets and past the stunning Gothic architecture.

Back on the ship, it’s our last night and the team has planned a special event for us. After a beautiful five-course meal of French delicacies, we are treated to a sail past the city to see the lights. With more bubbles in hand, we wave goodbye to the beautiful taster of a wonderful itinerary. CT

“Seeing the world has helped me lose my natural cynicism”

With his travel show, the Schitt’s Creek actor looks to test the notion that you’re never too old to surprise yourself.

I’m not really what you would call a “good traveller”.

It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just who I am. There are certain attributes you need in order to be one of those people, one being the curiosity to want to get out there and explore. That’s never been my strong point. For example, sightseeing is not an experience that I find enjoyable: when it’s too hot, I’m uncomfortable; when it’s too cold, I’m uncomfortable. Plus, I’ve got a basic palate: I’m a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy. I love Italy because you’re always going to get a good meal, but eating at new places on holiday – not knowing what the food will be like – has always made me nervous. Warthog sausage and crocodile schnitzel is not for me. It would be generous to say that I have a low sense of adventure.

I’ve also never had a travel “bucket list”.

I’ve always been content with a decent hotel where I can make good use of the amenities, and where things can be kept simple. When our kids, Dan and Sarah, were younger, my wife Deb and I 118

would always take them to beach resorts. This was ideal. There wasn’t a whole lot on the agenda: we’d get down to the pool every day, have a nice cool drink and decide where to go for dinner. There was not much thinking involved.

So, as you might imagine, I was hesitant about doing a travel show where the central conceit was about pushing my boundaries, really putting myself out there and laying all my silly little foibles on the table. But it just goes to show, you’re never too old to surprise yourself.

We travelled all over the place while filming The Reluctant Traveller…

…right around the world – and time after time I found my reservations spectacularly (or, at least, partly) unfounded. South Africa was the biggest surprise. I’d never really wanted to go on a safari and was not excited about the prospect.

I know people say it’s exciting, but I just didn’t get it. I’d always thought I have a very strong sense of what these animals look like; I’ve seen them on TV, so do I need to get up at five in the morning to go look at a giraffe wandering across a field? Well, it seems I did. Once I was actually there, all of a sudden, I got it.

overnight because it was a hotspot for seeing the “Big Five” – that’s the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo. In the early 1970s, they stopped that train route, until recently somebody had the idea of putting that train permanently on the bridge and turning it into a hotel. The train cars are suites with floor-toceiling windows, so every day I’d wake up and look out to see elephants and water buffalo and spot crocodiles heading up the river.

More surprising still was that I started to develop a great affinity for the landscape and the animals, in a way I could never have imagined.

surprise with an incredible view (at the foot of a volcano which, I was told, had been dormant for only 10 years. That was a little close for comfort, but you can’t have everything).

But the most memorable aspect – and the thing which made every moment that was difficult or uncomfortable (or terrifying) worthwhile – was the people I encountered.

been badly injured by poachers and hunters, and I got to bottle-feed these beautiful [270kg] babies and hand-feed a black rhino. Being there, the concept of how much danger these animals are in on a day-to-day basis hit me hard.

Of course, there were experiences which I didn’t enjoy – ones which I would never ordinarily have done, and which I wouldn’t do again…

…but about which I’m so glad to be able to say “at least I tried”. Going on a night hike in the Costa Rican rainforest with snakes and spiders?

That’s an experience I did not enjoy, but at least I tried it. Going up in a helicopter in Utah over the Horseshoe Bend and landing on the sandstone summit of Tower Butte? Likewise. It made me crazy: I have a thing with heights, my stomach was churning and it was not a pleasant experience, but I can pat myself on the back for doing it.

But even the less enjoyable things often had silver linings.

I went ice fishing in Lapland, for example, which was, on the whole, cold and unpleasant – but I Cruise &Travel

loved the huskies, and driving a dog sled across a frozen lake was truly an exhilarating experience.

Equally, in Tokyo I was brought a tray of sushi, eel sashimi and sea urchins. I’ve never eaten sushi before – for me, cook the fish: put it over a fire and grill it – but the wagyu beef was exceptionally great. So good, in fact, that I had it again in Costa Rica, cooked with a crust made with the local coffee, and it was wonderful.

And then there were the tents.

In Costa Rica, I was told we’d be staying at Nayara Tented Camp and, having never slept under canvas before, I expected the worst. And then – a miracle. I arrived to find luxurious tents built on stilts [10 metres] in the air, a delightful

Getting to meet their families and dropping myself into their culture was wonderful, but more than that, it was good for me. I’ve always been a very private person – on the shy side, to be honest – never one to put myself out there or readily engage in conversation with unfamiliar people. But the experience of meeting so many new people from so many incredible, fascinating places has been a very positive thing, allowing me to brush off some of the cobwebs that have been forming for many, many years.

I’m never going to be the planet’s most adventurous traveller…

…but seeing the world has helped me lose my natural cynicism and turned me into a more positive person. That’s what travelling can do – it can turn your head in ways that nothing else can. I’m still not a gung-ho traveller exactly, but at least I’m making headway. Landmark events

On a combination cruise and land journey with Crystal and Abercrombie & Kent, Michael Turtle enjoys India from (almost) every angle.

ithin hours of my arrival in India, people are throwing powder all over me. Splotches, stripes and smears on my white clothes. Red, blue, green, and yellow. I look like a toddler’s attempt at art... and I love it! What wonderful timing to get here right in the middle of the country’s Holi festival.

But India is an explosion of colour any time of the year, especially here in the Golden Triangle, where I’m touring the popular circuit between New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with Abercrombie & Kent, who will then fly our group to Mumbai to join a sailing with Crystal Cruises (now part of the A&K family). This combination of land and sea is emerging as one of the big travel trends of 2025, and I’m here to experience it for myself.

From the Leela Palace in New Delhi, a grand art-filled hotel inspired by the homes of the maharajas, we head to one of the city’s World Heritage sites, Humayun’s Tomb. Built in 1570, the imposing red mausoleum of the popular emperor is surrounded by green landscaped gardens. “It’s so peaceful, like his kind heart,” muses Ajay, our A&K guide, as we wander through.

It’s certainly much quieter than the Taj Mahal, which was modelled on the architecture of Humayun’s Tomb. After driving for a few hours to Agra, we approach the Taj Mahal’s entrance and are faced with large crowds waiting to get in. Thankfully, Ajay leads us through the mayhem, navigating the ticket turnstiles and security screenings like an expert. A guide such as Ajay has a dual role on a tour like this – to introduce us to his country but also to manage the complexities that come with travelling through India. He (unintentionally) describes that balance one day as we’re looking out the bus window at the manic streets. “The traffic is just like marine life.

All the fish swim together but never hit each other,” he says, contemplatively.

Because the truth is that much of India is chaotic and overwhelming. Even though the culture and heritage are incredible – as rich and colourful as you’ll find anywhere in the world – it can be hard to experience the country independently.

There’s a reason India is fast becoming one of Abercrombie & Kent’s most popular destinations, because luxury travellers do appreciate the extra care and attention.

When we stop at a restaurant for lunch or arrive at a hotel to check in, a local A&K representative is already waiting for us, ready to answer any questions or help with any issues. Not that I have any issues at our Jaipur hotel, the gorgeous Leela Palace, where my villa has a private plunge pool and we dine at the specialty Indian restaurant lit entirely by candles. The walls and ceiling of the restaurant are decorated with more than 350,000 pieces of cut glass in a design inspired by the Amber Fort, one of Jaipur’s iconic sights that we had explored just hours earlier. Ajay had told us there that “living was never boring in these palaces”, and I’m starting to understand what he means.

Days later, we say farewell to Ajay at Mumbai’s port after a quick drive around the city, past the modern skyscrapers, the incredible Italian Gothic-style train station, and the streets of sari shops with a symphony of colour that brings back memories of that first day of Holi. It’s now time to cruise, to join the Crystal Symphony, and the transition from land to the deep blue of the sea is seamless, with the A&K team taking us all the way to the ship’s check-in.

bercrombie & Kent bought the Crystal brand and two of its ships in 2022. After an extensive refurbishment, the ships returned to service less than two years ago, and boarding the Crystal Symphony, the freshness is noticeable immediately.

In the light-filled atrium, I’m greeted with a glass of champagne that I carry with me straight to the Parisian-themed bistro at the top of the staircase (I’m hungry!). After a smoked salmon and brie bagel, I reach my suite, where another bottle of champagne is waiting on ice.

I’m in a Sapphire Ocean View Suite, consisting of a queensize bedroom, spacious living area with sofa and dining table, walk-in wardrobe, and large bathroom with shower and twin sinks. Bright and modern, it’s one of the new styles of suites introduced with the refurbishment, while other decks have older (albeit refreshed) designs still available for passengers who prefer a bath or more traditional decor.

almost one staff member per passenger. Whether I’m enjoying afternoon tea in the generous Palm Court lounge with 270-degree views from the bow or a negroni in the intimate Avenue Saloon piano bar, the space never feels crowded, yet there’s always someone nearby to help.

Sailing down India’s coast feels so different to seeing it by land, the bustling streets where cows have right of way replaced by calm waters and ice cream or cocktails by the pool. But pulling into Goa, there’s one more chance to explore some of the country’s heritage.

The centuries as a Portuguese colony give Goa a distinct culture, with almost as many churches as temples. The tropical coastal location means curries normally consist of coconut and fish, and the sweeping beaches attract hordes of domestic tourists. Shore excursion options in Goa include an exploration of the World Heritage-listed churches built by the Europeans, with opulent Baroque facades leading to interiors of paintings and statues that aimed to awe the location population to convert to Catholicism.

I join a shore excursion that drives up into the hinterland to a spice farm, an aromatic jungle of pepper, lemongrass, chilli and cashew. For lunch at the farm, the local traditional food incorporates this rainbow of flavours into a buffet of dishes I’ve

never heard of, a reminder of how regional the cuisine can be in India, and how much you can learn from a good meal.

Of course, I’ve had no shortage of good meals recently. The dining options on Crystal Symphony are one of the ship’s highlights, starting with Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian restaurant created by celebrity chef Nobu (the only one of his restaurants at sea). Perhaps my eyes are bigger than my stomach, but I try to get through the selection of incredible sashimi and seafood fusion dishes that appear on the table.

I’m more restrained at Beefbar, a global dining sensation with a focus on sourcing exquisite cuts of meat. The other showstopper is the Italian restaurant, Osteria d’Ovidio, which has a new menu designed by the renowned Alajmo brothers, including saffron risotto and herb-crusted lamb chops. Several complimentary visits to the specialty restaurants are included, but there’s no shortage of other dining options on the ship.

It’s a big change after days of Indian meals on the land portion of my trip... but it’s also nice to have some variety. Ultimately, it’s the variety that makes this hybrid holiday of tour and cruise so interesting. A bit more immersion with overnight stays and drives in the Golden Triangle, a bit more relaxation on the Crystal Symphony. All of it with the vibrancy you would expect from a country as colourful as India. CT

A new 100-day tour takes in 32 destinations in 13 countries, but prices are not cheap, writes Damien Gabet.

I

t’s one thing to dream up a 100-day train journey around the world. It’s quite another to make it happen – and then justify the $232,000-plus price tag. Just ask Jim Louth, the man behind the new Adventures

by Train itinerary, which promises to carry 12 guests from London to Tokyo, across the Pacific to North America, and back again via the Queen Mary 2 – all without boarding a single plane.

“You can’t just pick a date and expect it all to slot into place,” he says. “You’re dealing with trains that run once a week, ships that sail twice a year, and borders that are still catching up with the 21st century. You’ve got to choreograph everything around that.”

The linchpin is sailing across the Pacific: a 21-night repositioning cruise run by Viking, which travels from Tokyo to Vancouver each

spring, when the company shifts its ships for the Alaska season. “That’s the one fixed point,” says Louth. “Everything else has to work around it.”

It helps, too, that Louth has spent two decades building a network of trusted fixers and local partners. “For every leg of the journey, there’s someone on the ground I know and trust to make it work,” he says.

Louth’s passion for rail runs deep. His father worked on the railways, and by the time he joined British Rail himself in the 1980s, he was already criss-crossing Britain and Europe on staff travel perks. “It’s been more than 40 years of loving trains,” he says.

This isn’t his first go at an around-the-world itinerary. “Back in 2019, I put something similar on our website,” he recalls. “It included Russia and the Trans-Siberian, but then the pandemic Cruise &Travel

hit – and after that, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine made it unworkable.”

Instead, the new route takes a more southerly path, threading through Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Countries such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – once notorious for their bureaucratic visa processes – have opened up to Australian travellers with 30-day visa-free access.

Only China now requires a traditional visa, which must be applied for in person. Overall, the red tape is minimal – surprising, perhaps, given that the journey passes through 13 countries.

The itinerary also builds in a number of “buffer” days – spare time between trains, should a timetable shift or a delay occur. “If a train only runs three times a week and suddenly moves to a different day, we’ve got the space to adjust,” he says. “Of course, if something ever became unsafe, we’d look at re-routing – or, if absolutely necessary, taking a short flight.”

So what’s the actual experience like?

Louth is quick to point out that this isn’t about black tie in the dining car. “This is proper travel,” he says. “We’re using regular trains – particularly through Central Asia – so you’re mixing with local people, eating whatever’s served in the dining car, and just immersing yourself in the journey.”

It’s also very social. “On these long stretches – 24 hours or more – something shifts. People open up.

Especially if you’re on a route that

doesn’t often see foreigners, fellow passengers are curious and friendly.”

That said, he doesn’t pretend it’s always easy. “Some legs can be tough,” he says. “Which is why, when we get off the train, we check into the best hotel in town. You can recharge, get cleaned up, enjoy a good meal, maybe join a guided tour – and then we do it all over again.

That’s the rhythm.”

Along the way, guests can expect a handful of “signature moments” – including meals at Michelin-starred restaurants. “It’s not just dinner,” says Louth. “It’s theatre. That sort of thing stays with you.” A particular highlight is the three-star Taian Table in Shanghai.

The price of the 100-day tour reflects the ambition. At $232,408 for a solo traveller – or $185,164 per person based on two sharing – it’s not exactly a bargain. “But you’re getting fully escorted travel, high-end accommodation and someone guiding you every step of the way,” says Louth.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I’ve tried to build it like that – no compromises.”

So who’s it for? Louth expects a mix of seasoned, often solo travellers looking for one last great adventure. People who have got “the means and the time”. None have signed on the dotted line yet, but there’s plenty of interest, particularly from the United States, according to Louth. “Considering we start in the UK, I’m surprised,” he says.

The highlight of the trip for Louth is the three-week stretch through the American West. After arriving in Vancouver, the group heads south to Seattle to board Amtrak’s Empire Builder to Montana’s Glacier National Park. From there, a private road trip winds through Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Colorado.

“You can cross the US by train in about four days,” he says. “But with three weeks to play with, I wanted to showcase the parts of America that most people Cruise &Travel

overlook.” The itinerary includes Yellowstone, the Badlands and wideopen landscapes reminiscent of movies such as Into the Wild and Nomadland.

“It’s not undiscovered,” says Lout. “But it’s definitely under-visited – even by Americans.”

The journey ends in classic style, with a seven-night transatlantic crossing aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. And yes, someone did ask if the train goes on the ship. “Sadly not,” he says. “But it’s a lovely way to finish the trip.” CT 129

LUXE for LESS The world’s cheapest five-star hotels – and the ones actually worth staying at – have been revealed. Emma Beaumont weighs in on the most affordable luxury accommodation on the planet.

I

t’s what every discerning traveller wants: to stay at the most luxurious hotel for the lowest possible price. But in an age when $2000-a-night rooms have become normalised, securing a reasonable rate can seem impossible.

Comparison website Which? has taken the opportunity to reveal the cheapest five-star hotels in 76 countries around the globe. The consumer watchdog checked peak-season rates for thousands of hotels and found a resort in Vietnam with a private beach to be the cheapest overall at just $45 per night. Of course, there is no universally accepted definition of a five-star hotel and classifications vary between countries.

To help ensure quality, Which? excluded any properties that were rated below 8/10 by users on Hotels.com, and those with limited facilities.

Other bargains included a spa hotel in Hungary, set in a 10-hectare park close to a lake, for $210. Britain’s least expensive five-star was declared to be the independent Roseate in Reading, which offers rooms from $279. Of course, some destinations are so expensive that even the cheapest five-star hotel will set you back – the Reykjavik Edition came in at $1338 (although low-season rates start from $785).

But five stars and a bargain rate do not necessarily guarantee a fabulous stay. We’ve combed through the list for you to find the ones our experts around the world recommend.

/ THE ROSEATE READING Berkshire, England

/ NOBIS HOTEL Stockholm, Sweden

Scandinavia is notoriously expensive, so this hotel stands out in the Swedish capital. You can’t get more central than its location in the square of Norrmalmstorg, in the Östermalm shopping district. The two historic buildings that make up the hotel date from the 1800s, with original features such as wooden staircases and stone floors. These combine with modern Scandi design staples such as oversized paper lamps and natural materials. Contrastingly, the Gold Bar has gold-plated walls and ceiling while the 201 bedrooms have Carrara marble bathrooms. The hotel’s restaurant, Noi, serves modern European cuisine family-style, with lots to share, and has become a popular destination for locals.

Reading might not be the most glamorous of locations, but thanks to the Elizabeth Line, it’s now a very viable place to stay while visiting London – at a fraction of the cost of a London hotel. The Roseate is only a six-minute walk from Reading railway station, meaning you can be at Paddington in half an hour. The hotel’s main Grade II-listed building dates back to 1911, when it was used by lawyers working for Berkshire County Council. Elements of its former life can still be seen: the original wood panelling remains, as do the cornice mouldings, marble floor and vast fireplaces. Relax in the small spa, which has a sauna and steam room.

It’s located outside of the city centre, cocooned by 4.5 hectares of woodland and gardens. The privately owned hotel offers classic, traditional hospitality across its 38 spacious rooms and suites, along with modern comforts such as a spa. Dinner is served in the Conservatory restaurant and the local, seafood-heavy menu is a delight. The Drawing Room bar and lounge features deep armchairs and sofas where afternoon tea, aperitifs and digestifs are taken.

This sail-topped hotel is a class act in Cardiff Bay. It has knockout views across the water to Penarth, while tides seep into rooms via colour and motif. A wetlands reserve sits next door to the hotel, a peaceful place to wander at sunset. Interiors are impressive: the curved cobalt-blue atrium spirals into white as it rises all the way to the seventh floor – internal balconies on each floor create an illusion of expanding space. Although Which? found peak-season rates of $622, rooms in low season start from just $287.

In a city known for gold-plated glamour and hotels shaped like superyachts, finding affordable accommodation may seem tricky.

However, away from the high-priced Palm Jumeirah artificial islands are a number of good-value hotels such as Avani Deira, which is close to Dubai Creek in one of the city’s older neighbourhoods. Guests can enjoy a rooftop pool and an Arabic restaurant serving freshly caught fish. The Avani chain has built up a reputation for reasonable and reliable mid-luxury.

The property is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and rooms come with butler service.

There are two pools – one heated in winter – and a spa, along with heaps of activities, from kitesurfing and golf to yoga and cooking classes.

/ GRAND HOTEL CONTINENTAL BUCURESTI Bucharest, Romania

This 19th-century property in a smart area of the Romanian capital was described by Which? as one of the most impressive hotels on its list.

There’s a noble, nostalgic air to the 59-room Continental, which was carefully furnished with pieces sourced from top auction houses. In the fine-dining restaurant, expect silverware, candelabras, Baroque furniture and waistcoated waiters. Attentive concierges and a spa (with hot tub and sauna) seal the deal. Bucharest remains one of Europe’s affordable capitals, and deals at smart chains such as JW Marriott and the Intercontinental can be found for a little more than $200.

ong-haul flying is not usually pleasurable, but it’s one of life’s rare instances when the effort-reward ratio is guaranteed to swing in your favour. Sure, you’ll have to sit in a sardine can for hours (six is the minimum for a flight to be classed “long-haul”), but the pay-off could be a budget round-the-world adventure, a distant loved one’s embrace or piña coladas in paradise for half the price you’d pay at home.

Worth it, I reckon.

As a travel writer specialising in the Arabian Gulf, I spend an awful lot of my life at 34,000 feet, in economy class. I say “awful”, but it isn’t, because I’ve an army of gadgets, comforts and rituals on my side – and I’m not the only one.

Alongside my tips, the following advice is gleaned from super-frequent fliers, whether cabin crew or airline-points aficionados; heed it, and your next long-haul adventure will be easy – even in economy.

Before you fly 1. Book savvy

Some easy tactics: fly during daytime, break up the journey with a stopover, and opt for high-quality airlines rather than obscure-butcheaper ones. Use Skytrax to check unfamiliar airlines’ ratings and aircraft types: Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A380s are generally considered to have the most comfortable cabins.

2. Essential in-flight gadgets

Always fly with noise-cancelling headphones (over-ear are best) and a hands-free stand for your device in case the in-flight entertainment (IFE) is disappointing – it often is.

The trick is to make your environment as pleasant as possible, so think about what might annoy you. Insufficient lighting to read? Get a book light. Tangled headphone cables? Buy a wireless transmitter to plug into the IFE. Check which audio jack your airline uses and purchase an adaptor if necessary.

3. Bring your slippers

If you need to sleep, a padded silk eye mask is worth the investment. As for the best neck

pillow, there’s no outright winner. I polled 22 top travel writers: seven voted for inflatable ones, seven for memory foam, and seven said they never used one. One swore by a Trtl, but another described it as “weirdly sweaty”. Experiment before the flight – you’ll soon find your favourite.

Little luxuries go a long way: “I never travel without slippers,” says Rhys Jones, aviation editor at headforpoints.com. “Removing your shoes on a long flight is a pleasure, and a pair of free hotel slippers means you can slip to the toilet without retying your shoelaces.”

Create your own in-flight amenity bag: medicines, lip balm, moisturiser, antibacterial gel, face mask, gum, toothbrush, lavender pillow spray, etc. And always wear flight socks to protect against deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

4. Book an airport lounge

It’s such a civilised way to start your journey – and if your flight is delayed, you can hang around in comfort. If you have a few hours’ layover, book lounge access for that too.

5. Go offline

Music, podcasts, TV shows, films, games, essential documents: download them all.

Charge your devices, and bring charging cables and a power bank in case mains power isn’t available (check your airline’s rules for travelling with power banks beforehand). And bring a book or magazine! Variety is key.

6. Dress for comfort

The old advice was to “dress up”, to maximise your chance of being upgraded – but in my experience, the probability of an upgrade hinges on your status on the airline’s loyalty scheme.

Repeat customers are far more likely to be rewarded, so ensure you’re signed up.

Otherwise, dress for comfort.

7. Decant your essentials

Got big hand luggage? Place your essentials in a smaller bag before boarding, to keep them close.

If you’re boarding with multiple bags, ensure you know who in your party is responsible for which ones.

During the flight 8. Embrace your new time zone

To lessen jetlag, shift to your new time zone as soon as possible. Live like you’re already there:

adjust your phone when you board, and sleep/ eat at the appropriate times.

9. Avoid booze, caffeine and sugar

Boring, yes, but so is feeling sluggish at the start of your trip. “Stick to water or herbal tea, and help your skin by removing make-up, and using moisturiser or a sheet mask,” says Qatar Airways cabin crew member Dejana, who has clocked up untold air miles. “We do them too when we’re on breaks – you look silly, but your skin is great afterwards.”

10. Don’t connect to WiFi

If your flight offers WiFi, think twice. Do you really want to spend the next 10 hours scrolling, or could you revel in this rare moment of blissful release? It’s often frustratingly slow, anyway. If you must message, silence the alerts for everyone’s sake.

11. Should you sleep?

Only if it helps you get on your new time zone.

Some tips for sleeping: don’t overthink it, follow your usual bedtime rituals (cleaning teeth, etc), and download some calming audio.

Fasten your seatbelt over your blanket: if it’s visible, the crew won’t wake you if there’s turbulence. And if your oxygen mask drops you may only have a few seconds to put it on before hypoxia sets in, so never take sleeping tablets.

Leave your seat every one to two hours, and do stretches while sitting (check YouTube for inspiration). On trips to the toilet, do calf-raises while queuing or jig in the cubicle to get your blood moving. It’s not just essential for thwarting DVT, but also flatulence – because please, cabins can feel oppressive enough without you adding to the miasma.

On ultra-long flights, divide the time into three-hour chunks and plan what to do during each one. This “bitesize” approach feels less daunting, and switching up your entertainment and activities will keep your mind fresh.

EAT, DRINK AND BE NOT SO MERRY Travel relies on food and wine as part of the experience. But what happens if we’re all on diet drugs and have given up alcohol?

I

magine, if you will, a world where a most important ingredient in travel begins to unravel, not just due to some abstract culinary decree, but thanks to the insidious whisper of modern pharmacology.

A world where the meticulous, almost surgical precision of “cordon bleu travel” – a term that surely conjures images of perfectly orchestrated itineraries and Michelin-starred dining indulgence – is suddenly, tragically, off the menu.

Why? Because everyone, from the most discerning gourmand to the casual tourist, was politely declining that second (or even first) serving of coq au vin, citing a distinct lack of appetite thanks to their latest prescription of Ozempic.

One can almost hear the collective gasp of despair echoing through the hallowed halls of Parisian bistros. The sommelier, with a tear glistening in his eye, lamenting the absence of discerning palates for his carefully curated vintages, now met with a polite, “Just a spritz of water, please, I’m feeling quite full.”

The boulanger, his baguette now bereft of its usual sophisticated accompaniment, would stare blankly at his unappreciated masterpieces, their aroma failing to entice even the most ravenous.

And the truly awkward part? The tables of friends, once united in culinary abandon, are 134

now a tableau of profound confusion. Those on Ozempic nibble delicately, pushing their perfectly presented boeuf bourguignon around the plate, while their unmedicated companions nervously eye their own generous portions.

Do they power through their triple crème brie, feeling like gluttons, or do they selfconsciously push it away, pretending a sudden, mysterious satiety? The very essence of French savoir-vivre would be... gasp... dishevelled!

But some feel all of this is a real possibility thanks to the spread of that magical little injection that almost everyone seeking a svelte body is now using.

One in eight adult Americans have taken Ozempic or a similar drug. That’s 31 million people. The ABC reckons 268,000 Australians have accessed Ozempic in 2025, using the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

In a special report, luxury travel network Embark Beyond asked, with the proliferation of Ozempic, “Will food still matter as much?

How will the gluttonous travel trends of the early aughts – the hunt for the best croissant or chocolate chip cookie on Instagram – evolve? The Financial Times has asked if Ozempic is killing the joy of food, along with the obesity crisis.”

Frissons of fear among the most-foodie nations have led to conjecture about what might replace food tourism. Worse, the growing number of young people now turning teetotal is also causing concern.

Italy, a land where every sunset is a painting and every meal a symphony, would be in shock if its trattorias and vineyards were no longer a winning formula to attract the weary traveller.

The nonnas, who have perfected the art of

convincing you that “just one more glass” is always a good idea, would be utterly bewildered as visitors opted for sparkling water and a small plate of grilled vegetables.

The ancient Roman ruins would crumble a little further, perhaps in sympathetic protest, as the usual joyful buzz of shared meals gave way to hushed conversations about calorie counts and the peculiar discomfort of being the only one still devouring that succulent osso buco.

The gondoliers of Venice, their serenades suddenly sounding hollow without the clinking of glasses on the Lido, might even resort to, dare I say it, tap water.

Without these foundational pillars of gastronomic and oenological delight – and with the added complication of a world suddenly experiencing widespread satiety – the world of travel would become a rather stark, utilitarian affair.

Gone would be the joyful anticipation of a perfectly seared scallop in Normandy or the lingering taste of a robust chianti in Tuscany.
