A LETTER Since they were matched in August 2017, Little Jena and Big Laura have developed a strong bond. Jena was initially very shy and hesitant to share her perspective but, with Laura's encouragement, has grown into a leader and advocate. In the fall of 2020, Jena joined our inaugural Youth Council and represented our Littles’ voices in the development of our Gender Matching Policy, bringing forth concerns and points for consideration.

She regularly communicates with Youth Council lead staff and advances leadership opportunities for her peers.

Most recently, Jena fundraised for BBBS of NYC through her high school to bring more

I thank you for your ongoing commitment to ensuring that our young people continued to be safe and strong as they navigated tremendous barriers over the last year. With your support, we served youth in every neighborhood across the City, connecting young people to consistent, impactful mentoring experiences and essential resources.

To realize this next iteration of our "new" New York City, we need new leaders. These innovators and ideators ready to reimagine New York City are already all around us: our youth. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS of NYC), we know our next generation of leaders is capable and eager to take an active role now. With mentors to guide them and families who support them, our youth and their potential ignited are a powerful force that will shape a better, brighter New York City.

Every day, I am reminded that our young people are not just our future. They are also our present.

It is imperative that all of us follow their lead as we endeavor to realize a New York City where everyone can achieve their biggest possible future. When we center youth, their voices, their ideas, and their experiences, we all thrive.

Little Alex

Little Alex has engaged with BBBS of NYC since November 2017, first as a participant in the Workplace Mentoring Program. After two and a half years, he moved on to the College and Career Success Program as he embarked on his college journey at Denison University. Alex has stayed engaged with BBBS of NYC as a Youth Council representative,

bringing forth ideas to better serve Littles in the program.

Alex channeled his leadership skills and passion for positive community development into a recent run for New York City Comptroller. As the youngest ever candidate, Alex built his platform around the critical importance of young adults in local government.

FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

DEAR BBBS OF NYC COMMUNITY, The past nearly two years have required each of us, especially our community and business leaders, to examine the role we play in developing the next generation of leaders and ensuring they inherit a more equitable and sustainable world. As New York City moves forward, there is no better place to center our efforts to positively impact the next generation than Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, an organization made for and by New Yorkers over the last 117 years.

The power of mentoring is universally recognized. Pick up an article on how to build success, read a biography of any influential person, or talk to a member of your community—all of them point to the role of mentorship as a key ingredient for igniting potential.

We must continue to actively define the role we will play in furthering BBBS of NYC's mission to build mentoring relationships that lessen barriers to success for our youth.

Our connection to the mission must not be passive.

Writing to you as the Board President of BBBS of NYC is a true honor. Though my formal involvement with this organization began in 2014, my commitment as a New Yorker to BBBS of NYC’s vision that all youth achieve their full potential began decades ago as an extension of my volunteer experiences supporting children and adolescents. Being a mentor to these young people was a privilege and a joy. I firmly believe that volunteerism, at its best, is a reciprocal relationship where both people learn through interacting with one another. This is what drew me to BBBS of NYC, and this is one of the special aspects of mentoring.

This is a defining moment to make a true difference for our young people. I invite you to join me in this urgent call to partner with our youth and actively participate in a mentoring movement that makes New York City’s unique promise of opportunity a reality.
