More than Mentoring Dear Friends,

When people think of Big Sister they think of our signature one-to-one mentoring program. Today, more than 2,700 girls receive the guidance, support, and care of a Big Sister. And, nearly 500 of the girls we serve participate in the enrichment programs we offer which address the unique needs of girls at different stages of development. We have professional staff leading workshops to increase girls’ understanding of complex gender and social issues; we have women who have defied gender stereotypes leading career seminars to broaden girls’ knowledge of what’s possible; and we offer a wide variety of activities to expose girls to new ideas, opportunities, and adventures that expand their horizons. We are more than mentoring: we are educators, we are conveners and we are advocates for girls throughout Greater Boston and beyond. We are proud of our continued growth in the number of girls we serve as well as the positive effect we have on their lives. We hope you enjoy reading more about all that we do in our 2014 Annual Report. Our work on behalf of girls has not gone unnoticed. In 2014 Mayor Martin J. Walsh launched the Boston Women’s Commission, an advisory board that counsels the Mayor and the City of Boston’s Office of Women’s Advancement. As a member of this Commission, Big Sister provides advocacy for key issues affecting women and girls in Boston. We also lead the committee on mentoring, giving voice to the challenges affecting our city’s girls. In addition to the involvement at a citywide level, we were also selected to participate in Governor Charlie Baker’s transition committee to create stronger, safer communities throughout Massachusetts. And, at the national level, we are proud to have just been recognized for the superior quality of our programs with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Nationwide Leadership Council’s 2014 Quality Award. This honor validates the significant work we are doing to grow and deepen our services while maintaining exceptional standards of quality, all of which are focused on meeting the specific needs of girls. We are proud that we are giving girls a voice on the local, state, and national levels. Our professional staff travels throughout the Greater Boston area to support Big Sisters, Little Sisters, and their families and to meet with our community and corporate partners. Our office in downtown Boston is used as a meeting space for staff to come together to share successes, challenges and new ideas; to learn from others’ experiences and to strengthen cross departmental collaboration. We are very happy to report that our office will be moving to a more centrally located space in Boston with better access to public transportation and closer proximity to the corporate partners who provide valuable resources for our staff. We are using the opportunity this move creates to further immerse ourselves in the communities we serve and to create an efficient and effective method of working together. We feel fortunate to work with such a generous community of supporters. We know that our work would not be possible without your compassion, understanding, and desire to create an environment that ignites girls’ passion and power to succeed. With gratitude,

About Big Sister Boston
2014 by the Numbers
Our mission: Help girls realize their full potential by providing them with positive mentoring relationships with women. Since 1951, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston has been igniting girls’ passion and power to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls’ healthy development. Today, we are the only Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) affiliate to focus on the specific developmental needs of girls. The training and support our professional staff provides for our Big and Little Sisters is derived from established, research-based practices that result in profound outcomes for girls in academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and healthy decision-making. In 2014, Big Sister Boston was the only affiliate in Massachusetts — and one of just two in New England — to receive the BBBSA Nationwide Leadership Council’s Quality Award. The award recognizes our exceptional standard of quality in regard to the length of our Big and Little Sister relationships and the level of support our organization provides for those relationships. Ultimately, Big Sister Boston envisions a community in which every girl has access to the nurturing, guidance, and support she needs to become a successful adult. Through professionally-supported mentoring relationships and enrichment programs, advocacy, and strategic partnerships, we are working to make Greater Boston the premier region in the country in which girls can thrive.

Our Programs for Girls Big Sister Boston is immersed in the diverse communities we serve through a variety of programs. From the traditional model of one-to-one mentoring relationships to enrichment offerings focused on career awareness, safety, wellness, and healthy decision-making, we are meeting the unique social-emotional needs of girls between the ages of 7-20.
One-to-One Mentoring Big Sister offers three types of one-to-one mentoring experiences in which a girl is matched with an adult, female volunteer — a Big Sister — who has been interviewed and trained by our staff. Community-Based Mentoring matches girls between the ages of 7-15 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in various low to no-cost activities ranging from baking to basketball to movie-watching to simply talking with each other. Girls remain Little Sisters until they are 20 years-old, at which point they can become Big Sisters themselves! However, the bonds formed between Big and Little Sisters often become life-long friendships.
School-Based Mentoring is for girls in elementary school in Boston, Quincy, and Cambridge. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at the girl’s school or after-school program site on a designated day and time. Together they read books, do arts and crafts, play board games, or engage in another activity of their choosing.
The Big Sister High School Mentoring Academy is open to high school girls from Boston Latin Academy who are matched with girls in the second to fourth grade at the William M. Trotter Innovation School. Both schools are located in the Grove Hall Neighborhood of Dorchester. Big and Little Sisters engage in the same type of activities as traditional School-Based Mentoring matches, with the added component of the Girls’ Leadership Program (GLP) for the Big Sisters. GLP provides Big Sisters with the formal leadership training needed to have a positive impact on their schools and communities. Topics include: leadership skills, conflict resolution, communication, and goal setting.
Enrichment Programs Big Sister Boston is more than mentoring. We offer girls the opportunity to engage in activities led by our professional staff that promote girls’ healthy development and broaden their horizons. Real Choices Strong Voices (RCSV) is a fun, educational activity designed to foster open communication and develop girls’ life skills, while honoring their individual identities and unique needs. Led by a Big Sister staff member, RCSV is a workshop offered to our Community-Based Mentoring matches. The curriculum focuses on puberty, sexual health, decision-making, identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships, and goal setting.
Big for a Day offers girls who are waiting to be matched with a Community-Based Mentoring Big Sister the opportunity to participate in a monthly activity with our volunteers. These are women for whom a weekly commitment does not fit their schedule, or who are waiting to be matched with a Little Sister themselves. The activities are planned and supervised by our staff and might include bowling, yoga, sports clinics, or STEM-based projects.
Life Choices is an all-girl group mentoring series led by Big Sister staff at various sites around Boston. This program creates a safe space for girls where they can openly explore the choices and challenges they face. More than merely a place free of violence, this safe space creates an atmosphere of intimacy and mutual respect where girls feel comfortable expressing their ideas with adults and each other. Life Choices utilizes the RCSV curriculum to increase girls’ understanding of complex gender and social issues.
Match Activities are offered one to two times per month. They are organized by a Big Sister staff member and engage groups of Community-Based Mentoring Big and Little Sisters. These activities are meant to enhance the traditional one-to-one mentoring relationship and expose girls to new opportunities through activities such as sailing lessons, college tours, career awareness workshops, and classical music concerts. 4

As girls age through our programs, they maintain a high level of expectation for achieving academic goals, as well as social competence and avoidance of risk behaviors, all key to reaching their full potential.

Little Sisters Improving or Maintaining Outcomes
Our Success Indicators We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcome Survey (YOS), a researchbased tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) program and our School-Based Mentoring program (SBM). Effective in 2014, we adopted a more sophisticated analysis tool developed by BBBSA.* We include maintenance of positive outcomes along with improvements in our overall measure which indicate that Little Sisters are developing resiliency against risk factors they may face in their lives.

* This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores. Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report will provide a more statistically rigorous analysis.

Our Big Sisters Our volunteers (Big Sisters) must be at least 20 years old to participate in our CommunityBased Mentoring (CBM) and Big for a Day (BFAD) programs and at least 18 years old to participate in our School-Based Mentoring program. Our vision is to have our volunteers reflect the diversity of our Little Sisters; Big Sister is committed to enhancing our recruitment strategies to enroll more women of color. In 2014, 2,471 women volunteered across all programs.

Taking the Lead
Big Sister Lisa O’Connell & Little Sister Makayla
W
hile 15 year-old Little Sister Makayla and her father, Michael, may not agree on everything, there is one thing they are both sure of: they cannot imagine Makayla’s life without her Big Sister Lisa. “Lisa is everything to Makayla,” said Michael, who is legally blind and has been raising her as a single parent most of Makayla’s life. When Makayla was seven years-old, her father felt that she might benefit from a consistent, positive, female presence in her life. He hoped for someone who could engage in activities with her that his sight limitations would not allow. What Makayla and her father got was much more. “Right when Lisa walked in the door, when I was 7 I knew she was everything I wanted,” said Makayla, who recalled performing an Irish step dance for her new Big Sister. Every Saturday thereafter Makayla eagerly anticipated a new adventure with Lisa. They went to the playground and the park and wrote their names on the ground using pebbles they collected. They went apple and blueberry picking and took annual trips to Canobie Lake Amusement Park. They went to the library and read books together, which Makayla’s father encouraged since he was unable to read to his daughter. Makayla knew that every Saturday was just for her and Lisa. “It’s important as a Big Sister to be consistent,” said Lisa. “You need consistency to form a bond.” Though Makayla’s relationship with her Big Sister has evolved in the eight years since they were first matched, the foundation of trust, guidance, and genuine caring has remained constant. “I’ve become more comfortable being vulnerable around Lisa,” said Makayla. “That’s not something I feel very often around others.” Whether it is friend drama or troubled feelings over her relationship with her mother, Lisa has created a safe space for Makayla to talk about her emotions and offers a different perspective for Makayla to consider. “Being a Big Sister is not about being a parent; it’s about being a caring and reliable adult friend,” said Lisa. Despite Makayla’s move from Burlington to Cohasset, Lisa — who lives in Andover — continues to meet with her Little Sister almost every week. In between visits, the two text and call each other often. Knowing that Lisa is always there for her has instilled a strong sense of confidence in Makayla. “Makayla has always been her own person,” said Lisa. “Girls can lose that as teenagers, but Makayla has not.” Makayla credits her Big Sister with showing her how to be her best self. “She’s a good role model. She’s successful in her job and I want be the same way,” said Makayla. “I admire her because when she’s not working she’s either with me or volunteering at a homeless shelter for kids.” With Lisa’s encouragement and support, Makayla has undertaken various leadership roles working with younger girls. Makayla will become a junior counselor this year at a summer camp she attends through a “campership” sponsored by Big Sister Boston. She also earned her black belt in karate, and now teaches younger children at the martial arts studio where she practices. “The younger girls look up to me because there aren’t a lot of girls doing karate,” Makayla said. “I love seeing the impact on someone else’s life.” The impact that Lisa has had on her Little Sister’s life is just as evident. Makayla’s father has noted that his daughter is happy and more sophisticated having grown up with her Big Sister. “If it wasn’t for Lisa, Makayla’s life wouldn’t be as good. She wouldn’t have a female to support her,” he said. Makayla now knows that she has a life-long champion and friend in Lisa. “I didn’t realize until I was older that this would be such a lasting relationship,” she asserted. “Lisa has become a part of our family.”

2014 Highlights January National Mentoring Month
February Funding the Future
In celebration of National Mentoring Month, 109 women resolved to get #Girls2Great in 2014 by becoming Big Sisters. Big and Little Sisters also attended Youth Mentoring Day at the State House to recognize communities across Massachusetts that are investing in quality youth mentoring, and to advocate for increased support of mentoring programs from the government.
Every year, we submit grant requests to corporations and foundations—who provided 23% of our 2014 revenue— seeking sustainable support for our innovative, gender-specific programming. In February, we submitted a proposal to The Cummings Foundation that resulted in a $100,000 multi-year grant. This was one of the largest grants we received last year, in addition to generous funding from the Highland Street Foundation/Holly & David Bruce, the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Lead Trust, State Street Corporation and Foundation, and our largest institutional funder, United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley.
March Discovering Justice with the Honorable Denise Jefferson Casper Through the Discovering Justice program at the Moakley Courthouse, Big and Little Sisters learned from Federal Judge Denise Jefferson Casper (also a former Big Sister and Board member) about due process, jury duty, and the challenges and rewards of being a female justice. The experience helped Little Sisters understand the value of the justice system, realize the power of their own voices, and embrace civic responsibility.
May Lemonade Day Lemonade Day is a national event, supported locally by Babson College, where Little Sisters become entrepreneurs! Together with their Big Sisters, they develop business plans and implement them through individual lemonade stands around the city. The process promotes leadership skills, goal-setting, financial literacy, and problem-solving. 11

April Comcast Cares Day Nearly 30 Big and Little Sisters participated in Comcast Cares Day, an annual day of service organized by our corporate partner Comcast. Our volunteers painted, planted, and cleaned up parks, streets, and gardens in Dorchester and Somerville, which are both in Big Sister’s service area. The day forged bonds and fostered community pride.
June Dorchester Day Parade Big and Little Sisters, as well as staff, proudly marched in the Dorchester Day parade to reinforce our commitment to the neighborhood in which 23% of our Little Sisters live.
July Annual Summer Picnic The 2014 annual picnic, held at Camp Harbor View, was attended by 180 Big and Little Sisters who enjoyed an afternoon of fun and empowerment. Together they splashed in the pool, built sandcastles on the beach, played soccer and danced in the field, and crafted collages depicting their ideas about girl power.
August Teen Matches Give Back Big Sister’s Teen Matches partnered with Mayor Walsh’s Boston Blooms initiative to promote the value of community service among our teenage Little Sisters. Big and Little Sisters were given 250 daffodil bulbs to plant at the Trotter Innovation School in Dorchester, where we also lead our High School Mentoring Academy.
September Blue Crew Service Day Together with our corporate partner Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, more than 70 volunteers gathered to revitalize the grounds and buildings of the Old Colony housing development, including the Teen Center. The project reinforced our commitment to our Little Sisters and their families, as well as the importance of investing in the communities in which they reside.
October Dove Self-Esteem Workshop
November Big in Boston
Our Little Sisters from Harbor Point mixedincome housing development participated in a Dove-sponsored workshop at the Dorchester Boys & Girls Club that promoted healthy selfesteem and confidence-building through a range of activities and group discussions.
More than 500 of Boston’s business and community leaders convened at our annual gala, Big in Boston, to celebrate the profound impact of our mentoring and enrichment programs for girls. The event raised $1.1 million in support of our organization’s continued growth. Mayor Walsh and Governor Baker were among the guests who joined us in recognizing our Believe in Girls honoree Jack Connors, Jr., whose longstanding support for our organization has bolstered opportunities for girls in Boston.
December Holiday Helping Our generous Big Sister community embraced the holiday spirit by providing new winter coats for 78 Little Sisters waiting to be matched with a Big Sister. Other caring individual and corporate funders in our community donated gifts to several families we serve who needed a little extra holiday assistance.

Putting Girls on the Map We strategically partner with civic, academic, corporate, and government organizations throughout Greater Boston to best meet the needs of the girls we serve and deepen our impact. From promoting safety with law enforcement agencies, to engaging local businesses in career exposure for Little Sisters, to providing positive mentoring relationships for girls in public schools and housing developments, Big Sister is putting girls on the map while building a community of support. The following are just some of our many partnerships that helped get #Girls2Great in 2014.
Health, Wellness & Safety Boston Police Department In 2014, we continued a robust partnership with the Boston Police Department that provided safety and self-defense training to our staff and our Big and Little Sisters at the police academy in Hyde Park. Additionally, the BPD paired female officers and civilian employees with Little Sisters on our waiting list for a one-day activity that interactively explored roles on the force from forensics to canine bomb detection.
Camperships Every year, we partner with summer camps from Massachusetts to Maine, including West End House Girls Camp, Girls Rock Camp, The Summer Camp, The Main Idea Camp, Fleur de Lis, and Dana Hall, to provide free or reduced tuition for a select number of Little Sisters. In 2014, these partnerships yielded camp experiences for 42 girls. Our “camperships” provide another opportunity for Little Sisters to build confidence, develop positive peer relationships, and enjoy outdoor physical activity.
Career Awareness & Leadership Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Activities Big Sister Boston increasingly offers various opportunities for Little Sisters to explore STEM activities and associated career possibilities. This past year, STEM activities for our Little Sisters included partnerships with the Women’s Innovation Network—an affinity group of Biogen Idec—and The Society of Women Engineers. Through these partnerships, Little Sisters participated in one-day activities ranging from learning about pharmaceutical research, development, and manufacturing in an actual lab to building bridges and programming robots at the Microsoft NERD Center.
Career Week In the spring, we partner with corporate and non-profit organizations to host Career Week for our student Big Sisters from Boston Latin Academy who participate in our High School Mentoring Academy. These young women enjoy informative discussions with local businesswomen about leadership, career trajectories, and the many job opportunities available to them. In 2014, women from Tufts Health Plan, Comcast, Tufts University, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, and Boston Scientific led Career Week conversations.
Advocacy for Women, Girls & Mentoring Boston Women’s Commission In June 2014, Mayor Martin J. Governor Baker’s Transition Committee Following his election to office, Governor Charlie Baker chose 170 individuals to serve on his advisory transition committees on schools, jobs/economy, community, health, and better government. Recognizing the important impact that supporting girls’ healthy development has on our communities, the Governor chose our CEO, Deborah Re, to sit on the Safer Stronger Communities sub-committee.

Community-Building Boston’s Housing Developments Big Sister Boston partners with Old Colony (South Boston), Bromley-Heath (Jamaica Plain), Harbor Point (Dorchester), and Franklin Field (Dorchester) housing developments to foster community among residents and promote the healthy development of girls through one-to-one and group mentoring programs. In 2014, we began hosting potluck dinners at the housing developments to encourage community-building among the girls and families we serve. We also planned service projects at each property as an opportunity for Big and Little Sisters to enrich their environments.
Conversations Among Women In 2014, Big Sister’s Diversity Council hosted our Conversations Among Women panel discussions, a contemporary dialogue series designed to engage women of color as mentors and promote professional success. More than 180 women explored strategies to manage challenges unique to race and culture that can undermine the confidence and risk-taking critical to professional growth.

Big Sister: The Next Generation
Big Sister Stephanie Desouza & Little Sister Amellia
M
any Little Sisters express the wish to one day be mentors themselves, to have an impact on a girl’s life in the same way their Big Sisters have impacted them. Big Sister Stephanie Desouza is doing just that. As an elementary school student in East Boston, Stephanie was matched with Big Sister Alexandra. She fondly remembers weekly visits with Alexandra during her school’s lunchtime where they would play games and talk with each other. At home, Stephanie’s Brazilian family spoke only Portuguese, but at school with her Big Sister, Stephanie learned to feel comfortable speaking English. Stephanie’s time with her Big Sister provided an outlet for her to relax, have fun, and express herself. When Stephanie heard about the opportunity to become a Big Sister through our High School Mentoring Academy, she embraced the chance to share the positive experience she had with a Little Sister of her own. Big Sister’s High School Mentoring Academy matches students from Boston Latin Academy with Little Sisters at the Trotter Innovation School, both of which are in the Grove Hall neighborhood of Dorchester. When Stephanie arrived at the Trotter to meet her Little Sister, Amellia, she was both nervous and excited. She knew that second grader, Amellia, might not feel comfortable with a new person right away, so Stephanie took the time to get to know Amellia’s likes and dislikes, giving her the space to open up at her own pace. “I learned quickly that she prefers card games to arts and crafts,” said Stephanie. She also learned that Amellia might shut down if she had a bad day and didn’t know how to express her feelings about it to her Big Sister. Stephanie remained patient with Amellia throughout, and consistently showed up every week to let Amellia know that she was there for her no matter what. “Even if Amellia’s having a bad day, our time together gives her a release,” said Stephanie. Stephanie’s patience and perseverance have yielded significant improvements in Amellia’s social-emotional growth. Her commitment has also built a meaningful relationship between Stephanie and her Little Sister. “She makes me feel happy,” Amellia said. “Sometimes when I’m not feeling ok, she cheers me up.” Amellia’s mother, Patricia, noted that her daughter has become a better listener and is able to stay calm in stressful situations. “Amellia is crazy about Stephanie and talks about her every time she gets to see her,” added Patricia. Big Sister’s High School Mentoring coordinator has also noticed Amellia’s increased ability to express her feelings and frustrations. Much like Stephanie’s Big Sister did for her years ago, Stephanie has created a common ground that has set the stage for Amellia to feel heard and valued. “Some days are difficult, but I’ve seen Amellia grow since last year,” said Stephanie. “It’s nice to grow with each other.” 18

ince 2012, Paul Revere Transportation has partnered with Big Sister Boston to provide pro bono transportation services to hundreds of Big and Little Sister matches. General Manager Richard “Doc” Daly, and Roxbury Division Manager Fred Jones, have worked together to ensure that our Big and Little Sisters have the transportation they need to benefit from a wide range of activities designed to strengthen their relationships and promote Little Sisters’ development. In 2014, Paul Revere’s fleet transported a total of more than 250 Big Sisters, Little Sisters, event volunteers, and staff to activities such as our Summer Picnic at Camp Harbor View, our Annual Appreciation Breakfast at the Westin in Waltham, the Massachusetts Conference for Women at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and safety and self-defense training at the Boston Police Academy. Paul Revere Transportation has consistently treated Big Sister Boston as a priority client. Doc and Fred proactively resolve any challenges that might hinder their ability to provide transportation. The two often personally come out to supervise the boarding process to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Paul Revere’s warm and courteous drivers go above and beyond their duties: they transported a wheelchair-bound Little Sister all the way home with her Big Sister, rather than have them travel on the subway. “As a company, we wanted to give back to the community. After the first event, the girls had so much fun we just wanted to continue to provide that support,” said Doc. Both Paul Revere Transportation and Big Sister look forward to continuing this crucial partnership in 2015!

ince 2009, EMC, a global leader in information technology services, has stayed true to their Boston-area roots through a growing partnership with Big Sister. In the past five years, EMC has increased their philanthropic support of our programs for girls year over year.Vice Chairman, Bill Teuber has walked in our annual fashion show and secured valuable sponsorships as a member of our Big in Boston host committee. Additionally, Senior Vice President & Chief Public Affairs Officer, Chris Goode, has been pivotal in providing support for our mission through his advocacy for Big Sister at EMC. EMC’s engagement with Big Sister highlights their investment in providing growth opportunities to women and girls, particularly in STEM, and encouraging volunteerism among their employees. “We want young women and girls to understand their potential and the opportunities available to them,” said Jessica Anderson, director of community involvement at EMC. “We want women and girls to know there is a place for them in the field of information technology.” In 2014, five women from EMC’s Boston-area offices stepped forward as Big Sisters, modeling these diverse career trajectories for their Little Sisters. Recently, EMC adopted a formal policy that will give employees the freedom to volunteer during the work day and afford more women the opportunity to become Big Sisters. As we look ahead, EMC’s commitment to a growing corporate partnership will continue to be invaluable in getting #Girls2Great.

A Lesson in Friendship
Big Sister Angelina Topalidou & Little Sister Reina
W
atching Big Sister Angelina and Little Sister Reina laugh and chat animatedly with each other one might be surprised to learn that their friendship was not always so easy. When the two were first matched through Big Sister’s School-Based Mentoring program at the King Open School in Cambridge, Angelina recalled getting little more than monosyllabic answers from her Little Sister as she tried to get to know her better. Though Angelina wondered if she was making a connection with Reina, she knew that being consistent would demonstrate her commitment to her Little Sister. “No matter what, Monday will come around and she knows I’ll be there,” said Angelina. Angelina would arrive at the King Open every week with enthusiasm and a host of activity ideas, so that she and Reina could get to know each other. Together they would draw or create a list of their favorite animals, colors, and books. Angelina would share her Greek heritage with her Little Sister through arts and crafts and reading. During their visits, she minimized any distractions to ensure that Reina knew their time together was just for her. Eventually, Reina began to feel like she could truly depend on her Big Sister, which put her more at ease. “I opened up a lot more to her,” said Reina. “I trusted her because she kept coming back.” Having established that trust, Angelina and Reina decided they wanted to take part in Big Sister’s School-Based Plus program, which would allow them to meet in the community. Reina had always done well academically and excelled at reading, so Angelina decided that one of their first visits outside of school would be a trip to Barnes & Noble. Reina had never been to a Barnes & Noble store before and was thrilled by the experience. “I don’t know how she always finds the coolest places!” said Reina of her Big Sister. They used the opportunity to browse for books to read together and to simply chat about Reina. “My friends and I only talk about school and friends,” said Reina. “With Angelina I can talk about more things, like myself and my experiences.” Now in the fifth grade, Reina is at a pivotal time in her life as she rapidly grows both physically and emotionally. Having a consistent, reliable friend and mentor in her life is paramount to her healthy development, and the benefits are evident. The confidence Reina has gained from her relationship with Angelina shines through in her improved peer interactions and positive outlook. Reina’s teachers and parents have both noticed positive changes in Reina’s social relationships over the past year, and that she seems happier and more comfortable in her own skin since being matched with her Big Sister. Despite the changes that lie ahead for Reina, Angelina remains as committed as ever to their friendship. “I want to know how she’s going to grow up.”

Spotlight On: Dolores Mitchell When Dolores Mitchell finds something she’s passionate about, she commits to it. Dolores has been at the helm of the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission as Executive Director since 1987. She has been married for more than 50 years. In 1991, she made her first donation to Big Sister Boston, and for the past 18 years, she has served on our Board of Directors, occupying one term as president and one as chair. From the beginning, Dolores has been deeply invested in Big Sister’s mission of supporting the healthy development of girls. She urges newer Board members to engage with the organization at all levels. “As Board members we are extremely involved in fundraising, but get involved in other areas as well,” she counseled. “Learn what people do who work there, attend at least some of the functions for the Little Sisters.” One of her fondest memories is attending our annual
Appreciation Breakfast for Big and Little Sisters and hearing the Little Sisters express in their own words what their Big Sisters mean to them. Dolores remains committed to Big Sister because of the dynamic growth she’s seen in our programming and impact. “It’s what has kept me on the Board for so long. It’s so exciting to watch the organization thrive and grow,” she said. “Having participated in the selection of the CEO, it brings me gratification to see the organization move into a whole new realm.” As she looks to the future, Dolores sees Big Sister Boston leading the way with the same commitment to meeting the needs of girls that we’ve had since 1951. “The city is developing. This means greater stresses and greater opportunities,” she said. “Helping girls become comfortable in a more dynamic, fluid, challenging world is what Big Sister does, and they do it well.”

Our Affinity Groups Big Sister’s Affinity Groups deepen and broaden our networks throughout Greater Boston, building a robust community of support for girls. Each group plays an important role in furthering our mission through recruitment efforts, speaking engagements, advocacy, and community-building events.

Alumnae Association
The Diversity Council works to increase the diversity of the staff and volunteer corps so that it reflects the richness of the communities and girls we serve. Big Sister was able to increase the number of women of color in a mentoring relationship by nearly 5% in 2014 with the Diversity Council’s support.
Through connecting and mobilizing current and former Big Sisters and former Little Sisters who live in the Greater Boston area, the Alumnae Association functions as an advocacy group for girls. In 2014, Big Sister’s Alumnae Association grew to more than 1,000 members.

Spotlight On: The Little Sister Board Our Little Sister Board was launched in 2014 to further engage our teenage Little Sisters and give them a voice in the organization. These Big and Little Sisters meet with a Big Sister staff member to plan activities geared toward the interests of teen girls. It is also a great opportunity for our teen Little Sisters to meet and interact with each other, forging new bonds while also building valuable leadership skills.

D’vine Inspiration
Big Sister Anouska Bhattacharyya & Little Sister D’vine
O
ne of the first things Big Sister Anouska noticed about her 12 year-old Little Sister D’vine was the sparkle in her eyes. “I saw it and wanted to know who she was and what she was about,” said Anouska. Over time, Anouska built a comfortable friendship with her new Little Sister. D’vine began opening up more as the two took long walks around their shared neighborhood in Dorchester. They would often end up at a local playground where they would sit on “their swings” and just talk. The experience built trust for D’vine not only in Anouska, but also in her community. D’vine had not always felt a positive connection to where she grew up, but the fact that Anouska also lived there, and planned their visits in the neighborhood, made her feel less guarded. “I realized things can get better here,” said D’vine. D’vine’s friendship with Anouska has bolstered her confidence, curiosity, and connection to the world around her. “Anouska’s changed my perspective on everything, from little things like fashion to big things like education,” said D’vine. Anouska began exposing her Little Sister to new experiences in small ways. She encouraged D’vine to try sushi for the first time, which D’vine realized she loved. D’vine began to wonder what else she might be missing out on and became interested in expanding her comfort zone with her Big Sister. “I’m more open to new things now, more trusting,” she said. Anouska has encouraged D’vine to audition for acting roles that interest her, and the two participated in a Big and Little Sister flash mob dance at the Prudential Center. They did so well that the other Sisters were watching them for guidance. After attending Big Sister’s annual gala together and meeting Governor Charlie Baker, D’vine felt a strong connection to the Big Sister community. “It makes me feel empowered, like I’m part of something,” she said. As D’vine’s friendship with Anouska developed, so too did her sense of self. “I feel like she believes in me and that’s a big part of our relationship,” said D’vine. More than four years later, that confidence now radiates from 16 year-old D’vine. “I’m the young lady I am because of Anouska,” she said. D’vine feels that without her Big Sister in her life she might have fallen in with a “bad crowd.” Her friendship with Anouska makes her feel that she deserves to be respected by her friends in the same way that her Big Sister respects her. “Anouska makes me feel like I’m amazing, incredible, and one of the most important people in the world,” said D’vine. D’vine’s mother has witnessed the positive changes in her daughter as well. “D’vine was already great,” said her mother, with whom she shares a very close relationship, but added that her daughter’s friendship with Anouska has “really drawn out D’vine so she can exhibit her greatness.” D’vine agrees. “My ‘awesome level’ is up here now,” she said, raising her hand above her head. As D’vine looks to the future, she admires her Big Sister’s achievements and hopes to emulate them. Anouska is a PhD candidate and lecturer in the History of Science department at Harvard University. Her success inspires D’vine to dream bigger. “If she can do it, I can do it,” said D’vine. “She can help me achieve my goal.” That goal is to attend Harvard and study to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. D’vine also wants to become a Big Sister, too, someday. “I want to change someone’s life,” she said. When Anouska asked if she had changed D’vine’s life, her Little Sister responded with a smile, “Yeah, you took it up a level.”
