Last year brought with it a great deal of change, from inside the walls of Big Sister Boston, to the heart of the communities we serve. There was change in the physical space where we work every day and in the staff who do that work. There was change in the way we talked about gender and race here in Boston and in our national dialogue. And, as you will see from our 2015 Annual Report, more than 2,700 Little Sisters thrived as our world changed. They thrived because they knew someone believed in them. They have learned that change can be navigated because they are not alone – they are a part of the Big Sister Boston community. Amidst this change, there was growth. We grew the number of girls who benefited from the care, guidance, and support of a Big Sister. We expanded the number of enrichment opportunities available to our Big and Little Sisters – from real-life college experiences to summer camperships to workshops focused on girls’ healthy development. We increased the diversity of our staff and volunteers to reflect that of the girls we serve. We are proud that 35% of our staff is professionals of color, that the diversity of our Big Sisters increased by nearly 9%. We hired former Little Sisters, creating a pipeline for women who have experienced the profound effect of our mission first-hand and who bring a valued, unique perspective to our work. We are pleased to share the changes and achievements of 2015 with you in our Annual Report, because above all, we remain committed to effecting change – one relationship at a time. Community Partner Perspective Greetings, As a child growing up in Roxbury, I admired the Big Sister Boston program. Even at that young age, I saw the positive impact a Big Sister could have on a girl in my community. As a girl who was raised here, and a woman who is invested in our city’s youth, I know that girls today need positive role models all around them, helping them form strong decisionmaking skills and giving them the confidence to grow. Had it not been for the strong female role models that I found in my community and schools, I would have never developed the leadership skills I needed to succeed. It has taken years of support and guidance from these women to help me achieve my current position as a Superintendent in the BPD and for them I am forever grateful.

When my position in the BPD provided the opportunity to collaborate with Big Sister Boston, I did not hesitate to volunteer. I remembered how much I wanted a Big Sister when I was a kid and I know first-hand, from my experience as a police officer, how much that interaction can mean to a girl. I wanted to ensure that every young woman who wants one has access to a caring adult friend and mentor. That need is even greater for women of color to become Big Sisters. So many of the girls served by this organization are African-American or Latina. Imagine the difference we could make by standing up for our girls, showing them how much they matter. We simply have to reach out. For the past several years, the Boston Police Academy has proudly hosted a Big for a Day activity where female Boston Police officers volunteer to be a Big Sister for a day to girls who are enrolled in the program, but have not yet been matched with a Big Sister. During this day, women from all avenues of law enforcement demonstrate what the career is about through forensic activities, meeting the K-9 dogs, learning self-defense, and participating in physical training. Both the women and girls benefit from this day by building a foundation for future police/community relations. The girls see these women as someone they can relate to and trust; women who are also part of their communities. The officers experience the positive impact that mentoring relationships can have, and many of them have become long-term Big Sisters after participating in Big for a Day. I am extremely proud of the BPD’s partnership with Big Sister Boston, an organization whose sole purpose is to ensure that more than 2,700 girls in and around our city get the support they need to become the women leaders of the future. About Big Sister Boston Our mission: We ignite girls’ passion and power to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls’ healthy development. Since 1951, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston has been providing gender-sensitive services to the girls of our community. Over the course of more than six decades, the challenges facing girls have changed, but our commitment to helping them address those challenges through the attention, care, and guidance of an adult friend and mentor has remained the same. Today, we are serving more than 2,700 girls annually. The training and support our professional staff provides for our Big and Little Sisters is derived from established, research-based best practices that result in profound outcomes for girls in academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and healthy decision-making. In 2015, Big Sister Boston was one of 15 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) affiliated agencies to receive the Gold Standard award for service excellence. There are more than 350 independently supported BBBSA agencies in the United States, all of which share the same goals, compliance regulations, and expectations. This recognition validates our commitment to upholding exemplary standards of making and supporting Big and Little Sister relationships. Ultimately, Big Sister Boston envisions a community in which every girl has access to the nurturing and guidance she needs to become a successful adult. Through professionallysupported mentoring relationships, enrichment programs, advocacy, and strategic partnerships, we are working to make Greater Boston the premier region in the country where girls can thrive.

Our Programs for Girls Big Sister Boston is immersed in the diverse communities we serve through a variety of programming. From the traditional model of one-to-one mentoring relationships to enrichment programs focused on career awareness, safety, wellness, and healthy decision-making, we are meeting the unique socialemotional needs of girls between the ages of 7-2o.
Community-Based Mentoring Our largest one-to-one mentoring program matches girls between the ages of 7 -15 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in low- to no-cost activities that can range from baking to basketball, watching movies to simply talking with each other. Girls remain Little Sisters until they are 20 years old, at which point they graduate from the program and can become Big Sisters themselves! Often, the bonds formed between Big and Little Sisters continue on as life-long friendships.
Site-Based Mentoring Our Site-Based Mentoring programs take place in schools and community centers in Boston, Cambridge, and Quincy. Big and Little Sisters meet once a week during the school day or their after-school program. Together they read books, learn new skills, work on projects of their mutual choosing, or engage in physical activities. Site-Based Mentoring creates a safe space for girls to have fun, learn, and grow alongside their Big Sisters during their busy school day.
High School Mentoring Academy This specialized one-to-one Site-Based Mentoring program takes place in Dorchester with teen students from Boston Latin Academy who mentor Little Sisters at the Trotter Innovation School. The teen Big Sisters also participate in our Girls Leadership Project (GLP) facilitated by our staff. The GLP provides them with leadership training needed to have a positive impact on their schools and communities. Topics include conflict resolution, communication skills, and career exploration.
Life Choices Our Life Choices program employs a group mentoring model led by one of our staff members. All-girl groups meet weekly at schools and community centers, creating a safe space for adolescent girls to openly explore the choices and challenges they face. More than merely a place free of violence, Life Choices groups foster the intimacy and mutual respect of sisterhood where girls feel comfortable expressing themselves with adults and each other. The Life Choices curriculum includes activities and discussions that increase girls’ understanding of complex gender issues and social-emotional development.
Workplace Mentoring & Franklin Field/Boston College Girls have the opportunity to think big about their futures with these two programs. Workplace Mentoring pairs employees at Partners HealthCare in Charlestown with Little Sisters from the neighborhood’s Harvard Kent Elementary School. Little Sisters meet with their Big Sisters at the Partners’ office, providing a meaningful mentoring experience, and valuable career awareness. In the Franklin Field/Boston College program, Little Sisters from Dorchester’s Franklin Field housing development meet with their Big Sisters at the BC campus where the women attend college. Girls in this program gain the guidance of a caring, adult mentor and the benefits of real-life college experience during a critical time in their development.

Enrichment Programs We are more than mentoring. Our enrichment programs foster sisterhood among our Community-Based Mentoring matches while promoting girls’ physical, social, and emotional health. Activities are designed to build skills and broaden Little Sisters’ horizons at different ages and stages of development as they learn and grow alongside their Big Sisters.
Real Choices Strong Voices This fun and educational day-long workshop is tailored to specific ages and stages of Little Sisters’ development, using a curriculum created by our professional staff. Big and Little Sisters engage in activities and discussions facilitated by a staff member that are focused on goal-setting, puberty, and sexual health.
Building Big Dreams This activity series for Big and Little Sisters nurtures girls’ future aspirations through hands-on experiences. These can include a day in the life of a college student or exploration of career options with one of our corporate partners.
Little Sister Board & Teen Matches Give Back These programs are geared toward our teenage Little Sisters. The Little Sister Board is a leadership opportunity for girls to develop their financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills through the planning of fundraisers that support teen-specific match activities. Through Teen Matches Give Back, Little Sisters and their Big Sisters take part in service activities that engage them in our shared community.
Big for a Day As soon as a girl is enrolled with us she is eligible to participate in Big for a Day while she is waiting to be matched with a Big Sister. Every month our staff hosts activities for these girls who are then matched with women for whom the weekly commitment is not a fit. The fun, skill-building activities include yoga, science projects, safety training, and scavenger hunts.

Community Collaborators We are proud to serve 69 cities, towns, and neighborhoods spanning greater boston — from the north shore to the south shore, boston to cambridge. In our community-based mentoring program we partner with four boston public housing developments to foster community and serve girls where there is a concentration of need. In site-based mentoring, we partner with 39 schools and community centers to bring our services to girls where they learn and play.

About Our Outcomes We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a research-based tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our CommunityBased Mentoring (CBM) program and our Site-Based Mentoring program (SBM). We include maintenance of positive outcomes along with improvements in our overall measures which indicate that Little Sisters are developing resiliency against risk factors they may face in their lives. This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores. Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report will provide a more statistically rigorous analysis.

Big Sister Talia Doucette & Little Sister Leila “Talia has made me believe there isn’t anything impossible for me,” said 16 year-old Little Sister Leila. Four years ago, Leila wasn’t so sure that her future held much possibility. According to Leila, her friends felt temporary. Her family life in Lynn was unstable. She felt as though no one was very invested in her or in helping to guide her through the rapidly approaching tumult of her teen years. So, Leila took matters into her own hands and signed herself up to be matched with a Big Sister. That year, she was matched with Big Sister Talia Doucette. Leila worried that Talia might become yet another tenuous relationship in her life. However, Talia approached the relationship with care and commitment. She took time to build trust with her Little Sister, asking questions and showing an authentic interest in Leila’s life. Talia began to find opportunities big and small to gently nudge her Little Sister out of her comfort zone and discover her true self. “Leila had so much potential, she just didn’t know it,” said Talia. “I just made you see you,” she told her Little Sister. Building confidence has been the thread that runs throughout their friendship. “Our relationship has really progressed from the beginning when I would ask her to order at a café as a way to build her confidence,” said Talia. “Now, I’m more focused on finding out what Leila needs at her current stage in life,” she added. Talia’s adaptability helped foster an even stronger bond between the two, particularly when Leila’s transition to high school proved challenging for her last year. As a result of her difficulty freshman year, Leila’s grades suffered. Talia took the time to listen to her Little Sister and figure out what learning style worked best for Leila. She then helped Leila develop a plan for a big project at school. Leila aced the project and felt she had reached a turning point. This past year, Leila made the honor roll for the first time and proudly shared the news first with her Big Sister. During an age when many girls’ self-esteem begins to plummet, Leila continues to hold her head high, knowing that Talia is in her corner. Seeing Talia step up to become a member of our Young Professional Board inspired Leila to seek out leadership opportunities, too. They became founding members of our Little Sister Board, they have participated in several of our Teen Matches Give Back service activities, and this year Leila joined her school’s student council as the sophomore representative. “Talia really helped me to become confident. I’m not afraid now to say what I think. I used to be afraid to give the wrong answer in class, but now I speak up and my teacher says I’m an asset.” Leila also wasn’t afraid to sing a cappella in front of 500 guests during our Big in Boston gala last November—with her Big Sister by her side of course. “Thanks to Big Sister, I have a brighter future than I thought I would have,” Leila said after the gala. “Thanks to Big Sister, I have a best friend for life, because the relationship I have with Talia that includes dedication, effort, and love, will never end.”
the big move In July, Big Sister Boston relocated our office for the first time in more than 20 years. Thanks to generous support from Suffolk Construction Company and The Trustees’ Philanthropy Fund of Fidelity Charitable, we transitioned smoothly and efficiently into our bright and welcoming office. Our new home in the Back Bay is a more centralized, collaborative workspace where our staff of 65 works together to support our community.

Each summer we are able to send Little Sisters to camps from Massachusetts to Maine, thanks to our robust partnerships. Some girls even attend with their Big Sisters! For many girls it is their first time away from home. These camp experiences build leadership skills, confidence, and resilience.

match moment During our annual Appreciation Breakfast for our Big and Little Sisters, we honor milestones, such as graduating from high school, entering college, or starting a job. Keynote speaker, Little Sister Victoria, shared the ways in which her Big Sister Jessica had been there for her every step of the way during the past nine years. When Victoria got accepted to her dream school, Colgate University, she shared her entrance materials with Jessica. When it came time for Victoria to head to college in the fall, Jessica was the one to drive her Little Sister to campus.
