For Big Sister Boston, 2016 was about moving ahead, forging new paths, and thinking differently about how we serve girls while remaining true to our mission and core values. Our story was — and continues to be — one of momentum.

We were proud to be recognized as the National Agency of the Year out of more than 300 Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country, and as the only affiliate solely serving girls. We were excited to welcome our new board chair, Deb Daccord, who shares our vision of increasing the diversity and cultural responsiveness of our board, staff, and volunteers. We were energized by the unveiling of a Big Sister Boston mural at Merengue Restaurant in Roxbury, which was a collaboration between students from Salem State University and the City of Boston Mayor’s Mural Crew. And, we were eager to lay the groundwork for partnerships that continue into 2017: a prom dress drive for our Little Sisters supported by the Boston Police Department, group mentoring for the girls at MetroLacrosse’s summer camp, and a workplace mentoring program with the women of Allen & Gerritsen and Fidelity Investments.

O UR M ISSION: We ignite girls’ passion and power to succeed through positive mentoring relationships with women and enrichment programs that support girls’ healthy development.

Since 1951, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston has been providing gender-sensitive services to the girls of our community. Over the course of more than six decades, the challenges facing girls have changed, but our commitment to helping them address those challenges through the attention, care, and guidance of an adult friend and mentor has remained the same. Today, we are serving approximately 2,700 girls annually. The training and support our professional staff provides 6

for our Big and Little Sisters is derived from established, research-based best practices that result in profound outcomes for girls in academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and healthy decision-making.

Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America honored Big Sister Boston as the National Agency of the Year out of more than 300 affiliates across the country. This award was given in recognition of the numer of

Big Sister Boston is immersed in the diverse communities we serve through a variety of programming. This includes the traditional model of one-to-one mentoring relationships in the community or in schools, to group mentoring that fosters sisterhood among adolescent girls, to enrichment programs focused on college and career, STEM, civic engagement, health and fitness, and the arts. Our programs are supporting the healthy development of girls between the ages of 7-20 in 69 cities, towns, and neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston.

COM M U N I TY- B A S E D M E N TO R ING Our largest one-to-one mentoring program matches girls between the ages of 7-15 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in low- to no-cost activities that can range from baking to basketball, watching movies to simply talking with each other. Girls remain Little Sisters until they are 20 years old, at which point they graduate from the program and can become Big Sisters themselves!

ENRI C HM E N T P RO GR A M S We are more than mentoring. Our enrichment programs foster sisterhood among our Community-Based Mentoring matches while promoting girls’ physical, social, and emotional health. Activities are designed to build skills and broaden Little Sisters’ horizons at different ages and stages of development as they learn and grow alongside their Big Sisters.

We have a dedicated Coordinator of Teen Programs who oversees a variety of initiatives tailored to our teen Little Sisters. Our Little Sister Board provides a leadership opportunity for girls to develop their financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills through the planning of fundraisers that support teen-specific match activities. Last year we launched our Sister Scholars program that connects Little Sisters to scholarship opportunities and other post-secondary education planning resources. Teen Matches Give Back is an opportunity for teen Little Sisters to participate in community service activities alongside their Big Sisters, like Big Sister Morgan and Little Sister Carolina who volunteered to beautify the Rose Kennedy Greenway last year.

Throughout the year, we offer fun and educational day-long workshops tailored to specific ages and stages of Little Sisters’ development, using a curriculum created by our professional staff. Big and Little Sisters engage in activities and discussions facilitated by a staff member that are focused on goal-setting, puberty, and sexual health. Last fall, 9 year-old Little Sister Semaj participated in a Real Choices Strong Voices workshop focused on goalsetting. She and her Big Sister Kaitlynn had to plan how they would complete a Boston scavenger hunt that included taking photos with local landmarks like the Make Way for Ducklings statue.

As soon as a girl is enrolled with us she is eligible to participate in Big for a Day while she is waiting to be matched with a Big Sister. Every month our staff hosts activities for these girls who are then matched with women who volunteer as Big Sisters through this program.

SIT E -B A SE D M E N TO R I N G Our Site-Based Mentoring programs take place in schools and community centers in Boston, Cambridge, and Quincy. Big and Little Sisters meet once a week during the school day or their after-school program. Together they read books, learn new skills, work on projects of their mutual choosing, or engage in physical activities. Site-Based Mentoring creates a safe space for girls to have fun, learn, and grow alongside their Big Sisters during their busy school day.

Girls at the MetroLacrosse camp in New Hampshire took part in our Life Choices program.

This specialized one-to-one Site-Based Mentoring program takes place in Dorchester with teen students from Boston Latin Academy who mentor Little Sisters at the Trotter Innovation School. The teen Big Sisters also participate in our Girls Leadership Project (GLP) facilitated by our staff. GLP provides them with leadership training needed to have a positive impact on their schools and communities, while achieving their goals. In 2016, these Big Sisters also received the support of women mentors from Comcast, were connected with scholarships, took part in career week featuring women leaders from business and government, and participated in the Pinnacle Leadership program at Alnoba in New Hampshire.

Our Life Choices program employs a group mentoring model led by one of our staff members. All-girl groups meet weekly at schools and community centers, creating a safe space for them to openly explore the choices and challenges they face. Life Choices groups foster the intimacy and mutual respect of sisterhood where girls feel comfortable expressing themselves with adults and each other. The Life Choices curriculum includes activities and discussions that increase girls’ understanding of complex gender issues and socialemotional development. Last summer, our staff facilitated groups for the girls at the MetroLacrosse camp in New Hampshire.

We measure the results of our mentoring programs with the Youth Outcomes Survey (YOS), a research-based tool developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) in conjunction with experts in the field of mentoring. These measurements are applied to our Community-Based Mentoring (CBM) program and our Site-Based Mentoring program (SBM).

We include maintenance of positive outcomes along with improvements in our overall

measures which indicate that Little Sisters are developing resiliency against risk factors they may face in their lives. This tool processes YOS data using the Reliable Change Index to determine meaningful change in scores.

Because the index incorporates a margin of error and can determine between “significant improvement” and “trending toward significant improvement” in girls’ positive outcomes, the data we report will provide a more statistically rigorous analysis.

DANI E L L E D RAYTON “A Fun Adventure, that’s what I would title a book about us,” said Little Sister Brianna of her friendship with Big Sister Danielle Drayton. “It would be a really cool book with really cool pictures of all the adventures we’ve had.”

Brianna wasn’t always so eager for new adventures or meeting new people. Before being matched with her Big Sister, Brianna admits that she was a very introverted young girl, who said she didn’t have a lot of friends.

An only child, she was content to mostly spend time with her mother and her nana, with whom she was living in Hyde Park.

Brianna’s mom thought that her daughter might benefit from spending time with a woman outside their family, and so she contacted Big Sister Boston.

At that time, Danielle Drayton had been living in the Boston area for a decade, having originally moved here from her hometown in Florida to pursue a graduate fellowship

in immunology. She had settled into her job where she was managing researchers at a consulting company. Danielle had participated in group volunteer activities with kids through work, and was looking for a more long-term, one-on-one experience. It was then that she thought about her own childhood experience.

She grew up in a primarily AfricanAmerican, lowincome, urban community. Both she and her younger brother had Big Brother Big Sister mentors when they were teenagers. Recalling the impact of her own Big Sister and the positive, adult mentors she had in her youth through school and church, she contacted Big Sister Boston to volunteer.

In September of 2014, Brianna and Danielle’s story began. When they first met, Brianna was nine years old and didn’t know what to expect. “I was like ‘Hmmm, who is she?’” said Brianna, who is now 11. “But our first visit was really fun and I thought, ‘Yeah, she’s my Big Sister.’” It has been documented that girls’ self-esteem starts to decline at age nine. Having faced challenges at school, Brianna’s confidence had taken a hit. As their relationship developed, and with her Big Sister’s gentle encouragement, Brianna became more open to trying out different activities and meeting new people. Brianna said that before being matched with Danielle, “I was afraid of people and I didn’t know how they were going to treat me. When I met Danielle I realized that people can be really nice.”

doesn’t have to mean good or bad or something to be afraid of,” said Danielle, adding that they have adopted a mantra of: Different strokes for different folks. “This allows her — and me, too — to be open to people and experiences that are different.”

For Brianna and Danielle, that might mean a big adventure like kayaking on the Charles or walking the runway in Big Sister Boston’s annual fashion show, or simply a new experience that nudges Brianna out of her comfort zone, like making new friends.

With Danielle by her side, Brianna began to feel confident enough to meet other girls her age at Big Sister Boston-sponsored events. Eventually, she became more outgoing in school, too, befriending new students and forming a friend group of her own. “I learned a lot about meeting new people from Danielle,” said Brianna. Most of all, Brianna feels she has learned about courage from her Big Sister. “I like how courageous Danielle is,” said Brianna.

“It makes me want to be like her. I want to do something to change the world, too. I don’t know what I’m going to do yet, but I’m going to do something big.”

As for what Danielle would title a book about her relationship with her Little Sister? “So Glad You’re My Sister. And, it would be a series,” she said. “That would be a nice book,” said Brianna. “I would read that 100 times.”

Activities for our Community-Based Mentoring matches are designed with intentionality and the goal of building Little Sistersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; confidence and skills alongside their Big Sisters. In 2016, 546 Little Sisters enjoyed a range of fun opportunities to learn and grow, including: a healthy cooking class at the KITCHEN at the Boston Public Market in partnership with Project Bread and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a software coding activity with Microsoft, learning about carpentry and construction with the tradeswomen of Sisters At Work, ice skating at the Boston Skating Club, learning martial arts at Oom Yung Doe, learning a dance routine and taking a nature walk at the Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary, experiencing a day in the life of a college student at Simmons College, and beautifying the Rose Kennedy Greenway through community service.

Big Sister Boston hosts six major fundraising events annually. Each is an opportunity to convene our community, welcome in new members, educate, and inspire while garnering critical support for our mentoring and enrichment programs.

We kicked off 2016 with our fashion show, Project Role Model, which featured a runway full of notable Bostonians and Big and Little Sisters, as well as fashions from the shops at The Street in Chestnut Hill and designer Michael DePaulo.

We wrapped up a year of philanthropic fun with our annual gala, Big in Boston. We celebrated at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with more than 400 guests, our event chairs, Jack Connors, Jr. and Patricia Jacobs, President of AT&T New England, and our Believe In Girls honoree, Mayor Martin J. Walsh. We also recognized our first-ever Big Igniters: five women who are igniting change for Boston’s youth through service, art, and advocacy.

It was our most succesful Big in Boston to date, raising $1.2 million in support of our mentoring and enrichment programs for Greater Boston’s girls.

Throughout the year, our Diversity Council and Alumnae Assocation hold events that address topics of importance to our community while expanding our network of volunteers and supporters.

In 2016, the Diversity Council held a forum on women and race in the media, hosted at The Boston Globe (pictured above), and panel discussion on disrupting unconcious bias. Our Alumnae Assocation fostered members’ professional development with a workshop on career growth.
