CULTURE Romancing the big move: Why Lions fans keep dreaming of a blockbuster trade
Detroit has waited years for a team like this. Now patience is getting harder to sell By Joel Walkowski Joel Walkowski is the author of the new book, “Honolulu Blues,” which explores Detroit Lions fandom through the author’s relationship with his father, his family’s history, and the lessons that can be found in decades of disappointment.
My phone starts blowing up halfway through the first quarter of a disappointing loss at Buffalo. Ding, beep, buzz. Not a single text is about the game. “We need to trade for Joey Porter, Jr.” “Welcome to Detroit, JPJ.” “Brad gotta call Pittsburgh about Porter. Terrion Arnold did more damage working the phones.” A big part of modern fandom, and one I truly enjoy, is pretending to be general manager of my favorite teams. I spend my spare time asking myself, ‘What would I do if I were Lions GM Brad Holmes?’ and searching for the next big move with urgency levels usually reserved for doomsday preppers entering Costco. Brad Holmes has built a competent and lovable Lions team but they’ve yet to get over the hump. Fans clamor about the next move, reporters ask about potential trades, and the 24/7 news cycle dissects every word of Brad’s answer before the next injury or disgruntled superstar begins the cycle all over again. Every fan wants their team to go all-in on a title pursuit, but it’s different in Detroit where the city’s next big sports transaction is a topic as widely discussed as El-Sayed-Rogers Senate race and nearly as heated. It’s not just a Lions thing. Detroit went without a single playoff series win from 2016 to 2023. Things have vastly improved. The current Detroit sports scene possesses the most blue-chip talent in this city since Berry Gordy was signing young musicians to recording contracts in his starter home. Detroit is home to some truly special talents: Jahmyr Gibbs, Aidan Hutchinson, Cade Cunningham, Tarik Skubal and his Espresso Machine, Dylan Larkin and his
unparalleled leadership abilities. The thing is? There’s always an expiration date. Superstars depart a lot quicker than they arrive. This is the modern reality but sometimes it feels like Detroit general managers are forbidden from going all in. Welcome to Detroit. Local culture dictates that you must love Jeff Daniels, call any vacation “going up North”, and hold onto every first-round pick. This might be best illustrated by Cade Cunningham, the superstar who embraced Detroit and restored the Pistons to relevancy. I assess Cade’s professional situation more than my own. Is he happy? Does he have the right coworkers? If his girlfriend moves in, can he afford pet insurance? It’s hard to believe but Cade is entering his sixth season. The question is slowly shifting from “how do we build around him?” to “are we wasting his prime?” NBA teams swap centerpieces like friendship bracelets at a Taylor Swift concert. “In the past few months, Ant got LaMelo, Maxey got LeBron and Jaylen Brown, and the best the Pistons could do was a months-long contract feud with the starting center. The closest Detroit has come to giving Cade a worthwhile running mate is that I’ve seen so many photoshops of Devin Booker in a Detroit uniform that my brain will erroneously remember him as a Piston. The thing is? Detroit’s best sports moments came after trading for the missing piece. The Bad Boys got over the hump after swapping Dantley for Aguirre, and the Back-to-Work Pistons cued their inspiring title run by trading for Rasheed Wallace. The all-in maneuver is a vital part of Detroit sports lore but in recent history Detroit has only been on the conservative side of these transactions. NFL teams rarely make blockbuster trades. The player that illustrated that trading for a superstar was a viable path to Super Bowl contention was actually Matthew Stafford. Going to Los Angeles gave Stafford a Super Bowl ring and bold GMs

evidence that being aggressive can pay off. The Rams demonstrate this season after season. This franchise, led by Les Snead, a GM famous for defending his trade strategies with a brash “F*** them picks,” constantly goes all in for better assets. Since going to Los Angeles, Stafford has been given support in the form of Myles Garrett, Davante Adams, Trent McDuffie, Von Miller, and a set of teeth as big as the Hollywood sign. Meanwhile, it feels like the Lions are happy just being in the conversation. The 2024 Lions lost seven defenders to season-ending injuries. The 2025 Lions lost Frank Ragnow shortly before training camp. These were huge blows but the team held onto draft capital like my hoarder aunt collecting Beanie Babies until they filled her home’s corridors. Rather than attempting to solve their problem, they fixated on future value — i.e., future draft picks or eventual Beanie Baby resale prices — and resigned themselves to a present riddled with obstacles. This is a dissonance with how we’ve come to understand the Dan Campbell teams. This team is aggressive and hungry, gambling at every on-field opportunity. This broader identity feels as much a part of local culture as the Michigan Left, but when it comes time to fix the roster a wait-and-see approach is consistently taken. Brad assures us that he’s working the phones, that fans don’t see the transactions he’s tried to make, even if they haven’t happened. A first-round pick is only valuable in theory. Hold onto it too long, and it can become eight felony charges instead of a valuable contributor. The long game is rational but can turn bad luck into a death blow rather than an obstacle. A year ago, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch were the heart of the
TONY WEBSTER/FLICKR, CC BY 2.0
defense. Both players suffered serious injuries, but the strategy to replace them seems to be outscoring opponents while waiting to get healthy. I’m not saying that Brad Holmes and Trajan Langdon are wrong, but there’s a thin line between patience and fear. Maxx Crosby, Joey Porter Jr., Haason Reddick, Kevin Durant, Trey Murphy II, Kyrie Irving, Tyler Herro, Kawhi Leonard: My favorite teams have been pursuing more all-stars than a Kardashian sister but ultimately landed none of them. Fans have been teased with these types of transactions for so long that it’s fair to irrationally want one. It’s why my phone lights up every time the Lions give up a long completion. “We need to trade for Joey Porter, Jr.” It’s not really about Joey Porter, Jr, or Devin Booker, or whichever superstar Detroit fans photoshopped into our uniform that week. We’ve attended Ford Field with paper bags on our heads and treated draft lotteries like playoff games. There’s no point in screaming for a missing piece when the roster contained roughly a dozen missing pieces. You don’t put a chandelier in a house without a roof, but the roof is finally on. I don’t know if these trades are right, but I’ll stand up for the fans wanting one. Detroit has almost made so many franchise-altering moves that the fan base has gotten Honolulu Blue Balls from refreshing Adam Schefter’s Twitter account. Do I want Joey Porter Jr.? Sure, but what I really, really want is evidence that my favorite teams care as much about bringing a championship to this town as their fans do. “Honolulu Blues” is available now from Simon & Schuster and other booksellers.

Casa Pasha is a new upscale restaurant opening in Rochester Hills.

Casa Pasha brings sushi, steaks and live-fire cooking to Rochester Hills A new fine-dining restaurant bringing together sushi, live-fire cooking, and prime steaks is preparing to open in Rochester Hills this fall. Casa Pasha is expected to open in October at 6920 N. Rochester Road, with a menu that blends Japanese and French techniques with familiar steakhouse dishes. Executive chef James Henry will lead a kitchen built around a Josper charcoal oven and robata grill, which will be used
for seafood, steaks, and other live-fire dishes. The menu will range from oysters, sushi, and raw seafood to prime steaks and American, Australian, and Japanese Wagyu. Among the planned dishes are an oyster trio served with rice vinegar mignonette, sudachi granita, and watermelon-mint relish; a tableside coal-smoked Caesar with fresh wasabi, white shoyu, and nori panko; and a kombu-aged tomahawk cooked over live fire.
Casa Pasha will also have an extensive sushi program featuring several cuts of bluefin tuna, including akami, chu-toro, and oh-toro, served as nigiri, tartare, and maki. “My philosophy at Casa Pasha is to begin with exceptional ingredients and intervene only with purpose,” Henry said. “Whether we’re preparing whole fish, sushi or a tomahawk over live-fire, the goal is the same: exceptional sourcing, thoughtful technique and the patience to do it properly.” The restaurant’s name combines “casa,” meaning house or home, with “pasha,” a historic Ottoman title associated with luxury and status. The owners describe the restaurant as a “house of luxury,” with a moody, intimate dining room and a cocktail, wine, and sake program designed to make it as much a nightlife destination as a dinner spot. Owner Brandon Rubenstein said the goal is to create an upscale restaurant that still feels approachable. “Casa Pasha is designed for everything from a celebratory dinner to evening cocktails at the bar, with a menu and ambiance that give guests a reason to settle in for the evening and become a regular,” Rubenstein said. Casa Pasha plans to be open from 4-11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. More information at casapasha.com. — By Steve Neavling
Little Italy Pizza is opening its fourth location in two years Little Italy Pizza is expanding again, with plans to open its fourth location in two years in the village of Capac in St. Clair County. The longtime Detroit-area pizzeria has taken over the former Johnny’s Pizzeria space at 534 N. Main St. and is targeting an opening for Monday, Sept. 28. The new restaurant joins Little Italy locations in Eastpointe, Roseville, and Warren. Little Italy traces its roots to Detroit, where it was founded in 1959. Owner Sean Katchuba bought the Eastpointe restaurant in 2024 and has since expanded the business while keeping its menu of round and Detroit-style pizzas, pasta, subs, wings, desserts, and other Italian dishes. “Growing from one location to four in two years is something we’re incredibly grateful for, but we’ve been intentional about finding communities where Little Italy can become a true neighborhood staple,” Katchuba said. “Capac has that close-knit community feel, and we look forward to introducing ourselves, getting to know our neighbors and becoming a place local families can count on.” The company says it’s hiring about eight employees for the Capac restaurant, including a general manager, shift managers, cooks, and counter staff. Hours and other details are expected to be announced closer to the opening. — By Steve Neavling

The Zalympix is a high-profile competition for the best cannabis.
Michigan’s best flower and live rosin crowned at 2026 Zalympix Mitten Canna Co.’s Toad Venom and Hytek’s Oishii Piña took the top flower and rosin prizes by Steve Neavling Michigan’s top cannabis
growers have been crowned again, with Mitten Canna Co. and Hytek taking the biggest prizes at this year’s Zalympix, a high-profile competition often dubbed the “Grammys of Cannabis.” Mitten Canna Co.’s Toad Venom won best overall flower at the fifth annual competition, while Hytek’s Oishii Piña took best overall live rosin. The winners were announced Saturday night at the Crofoot in Pontiac, wrapping up a competition that featured 27 flower finalists and 20 rosin finalists from across Michigan.
The results included plenty of familiar names. Hytek won best overall and best tasting flower last year with Lantz. This time around, the Detroit cultivator moved to the top of the rosin competition with Oishii Piña, which also won best looking and placed third in best tasting and best terps. Oishii Piña has a delicious flavor profile of tropical fruit, citrus, tart candy, cream, and gas. Mitten Canna also made a jump from last year. Its Candy Blues 4 won best looking flower in 2025. This year, Toad Venom won the biggest flower prize

Hytek and Freshy Fine bring award-winning Lantz to new vapes One of Detroit’s most celebrated cannabis strains is getting a new format this week. Detroit cultivator Hytek has teamed up with Michigan cannabis brand Freshy Fine on a disposable vape featuring Lantz, Hytek’s award-winning cross of Ridgeline Runtz and Green Lantern. The collaboration hits dispensary shelves Friday, Sept. 18. Lantz has become one of Hytek’s signature strains. At Michigan’s 2025 Zalympix, the high-profile cannabis competition often described as the “Grammys of weed,” it won best overall flower and best tasting flower. The strain is known for an unusual mix of tart lime, candy, pine, and floral flavors. Freshy Fine has some Zalympix hardware of its own. Its Gorilla Glue #4 won the competition’s heaviest-hitting flower category last year. The family-owned company has roots in Michigan’s caregiver market and operates cultivation and processing facilities in Buena Vista Township near
Saginaw. For the collaboration, Freshy Fine is turning Lantz into a CO2 oil disposable vape. CO2 oil is a cannabis concentrate made by using pressurized carbon dioxide to extract cannabinoids and other compounds from the plant. Freshy Fine says its one-gram disposable vapes use full-spectrum, single-source CO2 oil along with cannabis-derived terpenes, the aromatic compounds that contribute to a strain’s smell and flavor. The Hytek x Freshy Fine Lantz vape will be available at The Refinery in Detroit, Kalamazoo, and New Buffalo; High Profile in Buchanan and Ironwood; Loud! in Warren; Olswell in Adrian and Grand Rapids; Puff in Kalamazoo and New Buffalo; The Plug in New Buffalo; and 315 North in Inkster. It will also be sold at all locations of Da Cut, Levels, The Cake House, Green Pharm, Dispo, King of Budz, and URB. —By Steve Neavling

— best overall — along with heaviest hitting. Toad Venom, a hard-hitting combination of Animal Face and Sin Mintz, is a fan favorite this year, with a flavor of earthy herbs, citrus zest, peppery spice, and subtle diesel. Yetistash was another big winner, especially across the rosin field. Its Blue Limeade, a pungent and unique mix of sugary lime, fizzy pop, and a musky earthiness, placed third overall while winning best tasting and most unique rosin. The energizing strain also had a strong showing in flower, finishing second overall and second for best terps while taking the top prize for best tasting. Great Lakes Kush also had another strong showing. Last year, Rainbow Beltz 3.0 finished third overall in the flower competition. This year, GLZ also placed third overall, while winning best terps and finishing third for best tasting. MI Loud Flower pulled off one of the clearest repeat performances. Last year, Kota’s Kush won both gassiest and heaviest-hitting rosin. This year, MI Loud won those same two categories again with Faders Fuel. Rkive, which dominated last year’s rosin competition with Banana Peelz, also returned near the top. Dagashi 2.0, a tasty combination of sweet candy and fruit with earthy, spicy undertones,
finished second overall this year after Banana Peelz won best overall, best tasting, and best looking in 2025. Peninsula Gardens repeated as the winner for best candy rosin, replacing last year’s Plan Z with Zallymon, which has a flavor of sweet candy, banana, and tropical fruit. Organic Mechanic, which won three awards last year with White Gummy Bears, also returned with a win, taking third for best terps with Tropics, a strain with sweet tropical fruit flavors. Other flower winners included Peninsula Gardens’ Fun Dip for best candy, Freshy Fine’s ZHB for most unique, Tip Top Crop’s Perm Sherb for best looking, and Botanical Greens x Michigan Matt’s GMO for gassiest. The competition began with more than 100 submissions evaluated during a blind preliminary round by an industry panel. The finalists were then packed into limited-edition judging kits and sold to the public, with 200 flower boxes and 200 rosin boxes available for $310 each. Judges sampled the products and voted in categories including best overall, best tasting, best terps, best looking, heaviest hitting, gassiest, most unique, and best candy. Zalympix began in California in 2021 and later expanded to Michigan. The Michigan competition is presented by The Refinery, Exotic Matter, and Cake House.

CULTURE Savage Love The Backlog by Dan Savage Been away for two weeks — happy to return to a packed inbox. Let’s get to the questions! — Dan
Q: I’ve wavered on sending this but
I need advice. The issue is that there’s a woman I’ve known most of my life. We are very close and as close to an open book friendship as I can think of. We’ve shared everything. I now realize that I have romantic feelings for her that I never acted on. I’m 35, she’s 36. The wrinkle is that she’s now married with three children. Our correspondence has recently gotten kind of flirtatious. I get the sense that she’s not happy in her marriage and I’m waiting for it to run its course. I want to be a supportive friend but I’m also interested in her in a way I’m almost certain she would reciprocate given the right circumstances, maybe years from now. What’s my best course of action here? —Personal Advice Is Needed
A: The fact that this woman seems
unhappy in her marriage isn’t proof that 1. she’s actually unhappy (married people love to complain) or that 2. she’s unhappy enough to do something about it (relationship satisfaction isn’t the only variable here). Middle-aged, married, and responsible for three kids is an incredibly stressful stage of life, especially in a country that seems determined to make being a parent as difficult as possible. And as women in straight marriages almost always do more than their fair share of the household labor and childcare, straight married women have a lot to complain about. (Here’s hoping this woman’s husband is doing his fair share.) So, while this woman, like a lot of middle-aged moms, may fantasize about alternative timelines… timelines where she’s married to someone who helps out more and impregnates her less often… it doesn’t follow that she would leave her husband to be with you or anyone else. Zooming out: If your conversations with this woman were actually flirtatious (“kind of” flirtatious sounds like dickful thinking)… and if you knew for a fact that she was unhappy in her marriage (because she’d told you exactly that)… I might encourage you to tell
this woman how you feel. But unless and until things escalate — unless and until she starts saying things like “I wanna fuck you” and “I want out of my marriage” — there’s a good chance you’re reading things into your conversations with this woman that are probably untrue. If things get unambiguous, PAIN, maybe then you could risk saying something to her. If she wants out of her marriage, knowing how you feel might encourage her to get out sooner. But unless and until things get unambiguous… unless and until it’s she’s the one telling you what you wanna hear, TITS, and you’re sure it’s not just your dick telling you what you wanna hear… your best course of action is to STFU. P.S. Supportive friends don’t have ulterior motives.
Q: I’m a bisexual married male. I came out to my spouse before I slept with a man for the first time, which I did with her permission. In the end I contracted a sexually transmitted infection during that first foray. I have a question about doxy and a follow-up question about gym etiquette. (I can’t really ask my doctor because I live in Texas.) How soon after a sexual encounter should I take my doxy? I think my mishap was due to me misunderstanding the directions. Which leads me to my gym question: I joined the gym for community more than anything else. I am not happy with my body, but it seems as though my body won’t be holding me back. I have been propositioned a few times and I love feeling desired by other men like this! I’ve heard stories about sexual things happening in the showers at the gym, but I don’t know whether this sort of thing is officially okay. Is messing around in the showers or the sauna actually okay? —Thirsty In The Shower A: 1. Doxy directions really aren’t that complicated, TITS, and they’re easily googled. But I’m here to help: You should take a 200 mg dose of doxycycline as soon as possible after you have sex with another man — ideally within 24 hours, but no later than 72 hours — but you shouldn’t take more than 200 mg in a 24-hour period. (So, if you have sex with some dude in the morning and take doxy immediately after, TITS, don’t take another round of doxy if you have sex with some other dude in the afternoon.) Taking doxy greatly reduces your risk of contracting (and passing along) syphilis and chlamydia; it also reduces your risk of catching/ spreading gonorrhea. You should also be on PrEP, which will protect you from HIV. And if you can’t talk to your doctor about these things, TITS, you need a different/better doctor. 2. A gym is not a sex club, TITS, so it’s not okay — officially — to mess around
with other guys at the gym. But the stories you’ve heard aren’t urban legends: unlike men putting gerbils in their asses (a fading urban legend that’s just had new life breathed into it), out gay and bi men have been known to mess around at gyms in gay neighborhoods. (Closet cases, on the other hand, mess around at gyms near megachurches.) For many men, the fact that it’s not okay — because a gym is not a sex club — is part of the thrill. But you have to be discreet, vigilant, and surgical: don’t mess around in front of guys who haven’t clearly signaled an interest in either messing around or watching other guys mess around (that’s the discreet part), keep one eye on the door to the sauna and knock it off if someone else comes in (that’s the vigilant part), and don’t draw things out (that’s the surgical part). Guys who are indiscreet, careless, and sloppy about messing around at the gym get their memberships revoked. P.S. If you actually wanted to cancel your gym membership — something many gyms make nearly impossible — getting “caught” messing around at the gym may be the best way to do it. P.P.S. To learn the difference between friendly smile-and-nod eye contact at the gym and come-join-me-inthe-sauna eye contact at the gym, get your hands on a copy of Leo Herrera’s (Analogue) —Cruising: A Manual.
Q: I’m a 24-year-old woman mar-
ried to a 27-year-old man. We’ve been together about six years and our sex life has always been off. He was a virgin when we met, and I struggled with low libido for a few years due to a hormone issue that has been fixed. He was the opposite: he wanted to bang nearly every day. Over the last two years sex became more one-sided. There’s less foreplay, less stuff for me, and he just focuses on whatever helps him finish. I suggested spicing things up, I talked about things I enjoyed, and even flat-out asked for more. He would say, “Sure, yeah, I guess,” and then nothing would change. When I told him I was frustrated he said he gets embarrassed when we do things my way. (I like a little light restraint/ choking.) But his “embarrassment” now extends to him being uncomfortable with any foreplay at all. He says he sees himself with his “third eye” and he feels disgusted when he attempts “my” things. So, while we’re having sex pretty frequently, the sex we have is one-sided and all about him. He has body-image and self-esteem issues, and I want to be as sensitive as I can be talk with him about needing more. I’m afraid that it will sound like he isn’t enough. I love him but I’ve cried myself to sleep every night this week because I feel used. —A Frustrated Woman
A: So, when it comes to the things you
need — including basic foreplay — your husband has a third eye like a Flock camera: it’s always on, it sees everything, AFW, and being surveilled like this (something he’s doing to himself) makes him too embarrassed and self-conscious to make sure sex is pleasurable for you too. But the magic Flock camera in his head snaps off the second he starts doing whatever he wants. So, putting in a little effort to make sure his wife is aroused before he sticks his dick in her? Third eye says no. But sticking his dick in his wife and using her like a masturbation sleeve — behavior that hurts you, disgusts me, and should embarrass him — that doesn’t offend his third eye. You’ve already told him what you need repeatedly, AFW, and nothing has changed. Unless you’re prepared to put up with this shit for the rest of your life — unless you’re willing to be held hostage by your husband’s intermittently crippling self-esteem issues — you should leave him. You’re only 24, AFW, and you don’t mention kids. You’d be better off on your own with a vibrator and some decent bondage porn than stuck with a guy who treats you like a sex doll. DTMFA. P.S. Choking during sex — even light choking — is dangerous. Ask your next boyfriend to hold you down by placing his hands on your sternum and collarbones, not around your neck. P.P.S. Even if you’re not ready to leave him, AFW, you have to stop prioritizing his feelings over your own. Tell him that you’re unhappy and that your marriage is at stake. If that motivates him to do something about it and you see lasting change, you can stay. If it doesn’t and you don’t, you should leave.
Q: I don’t know if you’re aware of Chris Gallant. He’s the Democrat nominee running to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District. This district — which covers the eastern halves of Long Island and Fire Island— is currently represented by Nick LaLota, the worst kind of ass-kissing Trump Republican. Chris was in the news this week because he did some modeling for Mr. S. Leather when he was in his early twenties and someone found the photos and sent them to the New York Post.
