Staff recognition awards We love to recognise our staff and the amazing work they do around our hospitals, so each month we celebrate a nominated team, employee and volunteer.

The award is open to all staff including those working behind the scenes - either in support functions or non-clinical roles - or to those who work in the front line.

Staff, patients, carers, and visitors can nominate someone who they think deserves to be recognised for the excellent care and service they provide and the difference it has made.

Here are our latest award-winners that have gone above and beyond and provided our patients with an excellent level of care.

Employee of the month

Thanks to our staff What an amazing evening we had at our Make a Difference staff awards. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all of the hard work that goes on in the Trust and recognise those members of staff who have gone above and beyond over the past year. I think we can all agree it was a memorable night and there are some great photographs from the awards on page 10.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Sue Musson, who has been appointed chair of the interim board for the proposed merged organisation, and will become chair of the Board at our Trust in September. Visit page 14 to read more.

Looking to the future, we are moving closer to our proposed merger with Aintree University Hospital and I thank all patients and staff members who have taken the time to fill out a survey or attended a public meeting to share your thoughts. Our nursing stars Recently we celebrated the fantastic nurses that work at the Trust with a special awards ceremony. As part of International Nurses Day 2019, the Trust hosted the ‘Nursing Star’ awards – in which Trust nurses were nominated in various categories by their colleagues and peers.

“It was a great opportunity to celebrate the contribution of our nursing workforce from over the years; those who have contributed to enhancing patient care, and providing it with compassion and care. We just wanted to say a massive thank you for that,” said Colin Hont, chief nurse.

On the day, nurses gathered in the Royal’s education centre for the chance to catch up over a cup of tea and a cake and to look at the various stands showcasing nursing roles, before sitting down for the award ceremony.

“Being a nurse is so special - to be able to come into the patients’ lives at a time when they need you,” said Jacqui Stamper, deputy chief nurse. “They need you to move their journey on so they can get better and go back home again.”

“It’s not often that we get an opportunity to say thank you, but to also take ourselves away from the work place in order to recognise those efforts,” added Colin.

“Today gave us that opportunity and I just want to say a massive thank you and appreciation to every one of our nurses that work really hard on a day to day basis to give their very best to our patients and their families.”

NHS England CEO visits Royal The Trust recently welcomed NHS England chief executive, Simon Stevens, to the Royal where he hosted a System Leaders meeting. Held in the education centre, Simon was joined by various heads of NHS trusts from around the country.

Chief executive, Peter Williams, then escorted Simon on a tour of the Royal’s accident and emergency department, where he met with staff and talked with them about their roles.

Simon Stevens said: “I enjoyed my visit to the Trust where I hosted the system leaders meeting. It was a privilege to also have the opportunity to visit the emergency department and talk to those members of staff who are on the front line every day, seeing how hard they work to look after the people of Liverpool.”

Putting patients first Following a series of successful trials, staff were thrilled to launch an enhanced ambulatory care service.

The service has enabled patients to go home to their loved ones whilst getting specialist reviews, procedures, investigations and treatments in the same timescale as they would as an inpatient.

it is a busy unit and pretty stressful at times, I get such huge job satisfaction from the service we provide. I’m in constant awe of the incredible staff I work with who always go the extra mile to provide a good patient experience.”

“Far too often we either don’t ask patients what they actually want or put barriers in the way of that request, without taking into account the complications of a hospital stay,” said Dr Vicky Price, ambulatory care lead and consultant for acute medicine. “Every single specialty in the hospital has helped us achieve this service and supported the writing of pathways with the unified aim of providing patient centred care.”

It is estimated from national and local studies that a third of patients admitted medically can be managed as an ambulatory patient, so I’m looking forward to seeing the unit develop and grow,” said Dr Price.

What started off as a few pathways for well young people who were only ever going to be in hospital for a day, has turned into pathways allowing more complex patients to go home - stopping lengthy hospital stays.

“For me, the thing I really love about ambulatory care is that it is so patient centred, and with an ever increasing number patients needing the inpatient beds, it helps those patients too. Although

Award winning staff Chance to scoop four awards Well done to the Trust’s e-handover team who have been shortlisted for a number of awards, including a HSJ Value and a Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care award. The team are improving patient safety through an auditable trail of

all handover between doctors, nurses and pharmacists - making handover more secure and safe. They still have a chance to scoop four HSJ Patient Safety awards, including Patient Safety Innovation of the Year, and will find out if they’re winners at the ceremony on 2nd July – good luck.

Research recognised Congratulations to Professor Simon Harding, a consultant at St Paul’s Eye Unit, who scooped Clinical Research Practitioner of the Year at the North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards.

Prestigious nomination

Celebration upon accreditation The endoscopy unit has recently been reaccredited by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG). The aim of the JAG accreditation standards is to define a high-quality, safe and appropriate endoscopy service, delivered by a highly trained, supported and motivated workforce. The unit has successfully demonstrated compliance with the 4 domains with the JAG standards: clinical quality, quality of patient experience, workforce and training. There has also been a significant reduction in waiting

times and a significant improvement in DNA rates, start times and better utilisation of available capacity across the unit.

“We are really pleased that the unit have achieved this re-accreditation and acknowledge there is more work to do as the demand for endoscopy services continue,” said John Foley, director of operations and deputy chief operating officer. “We just want to say a huge thank you to the team for all their hard work in getting JAG accreditation restated and we will continue to work together to meet the on-going challenges the service faces in the future.”

The Trust’s learning disability team are finalists for a Learning Disability Nursing Award at the 2019 RCNi Nurse Awards.

The team have transformed the hospital experience of people with learning disabilities, with work including steering groups with service users as core members and a champion network that provides a forum to address educational, environmental and clinical needs. Training has also been given to more than 3,400 staff, resulting in fundamental cultural change in the Trust.

Good luck to the team at the ceremony on 3 July.

Highly commended team Congratulations to our Roald Dahl Centre Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (TTP) team for being a highly commended specialist at the HSJ Awards. Dr Tina Dutt, consultant haematologist, said: “I’m very proud of this fantastic team and all of the patients who we work with to beat this rare disease. It’s really rewarding to be recognised!”

6 Ensure we are fully prepared for a successful move into the new Royal

New Royal: Major works set to start Work is set to start on an essential programme of repairs to parts of the structure of the new Royal, which will ensure the hospital is finished to the high standards required.

This follows a thorough assessment of the structure by the Trust appointed contractor, Laing O’Rourke, and structural experts, Arup, who have developed a programme of remedial works to fix these issues. Although this work is highly complex and will take time, it’s a step in the right direction and will enable us to deliver the world class hospital we’ve all been waiting for.

Keith McGreavy, project director for redevelopment, said: “Work will include strengthening existing beams and redistributing loads that are the main cause of the structural issues.

There will also be work required to replace parts of the cladding to ward areas of the building. The work required to replace the cladding requires approval from regulators.

Laing O’Rourke is awaiting this approval to enable them to finalise the construction programme and schedule for completing the new Royal.”

Together with Laing O’Rourke and Gleeds, we are procuring around 141 works packages covering everything from structural works to taps. In some cases, this is a complex process and the values for some packages require approval from NHS Improvement. Where appropriate we are hoping to secure contracts with previous suppliers, in order to support their businesses and also preserve previous warranties for works.

Funding for maintenance of the existing Royal is in place and the Trust, NHS Improvement and the Department for Health and Social Care are all committed to supporting ongoing maintenance to ensure that patients are kept safe.

Eamon Fairclough, head of estates and facilities, said: “We’ve set aside over £3 million for maintaining the current building, and money has already been spent on modernising the patient lifts, on ensuring we have vital spare parts on-site for systems such as heating and ventilation, and increasing maintenance for important equipment and systems.

“We’re also bringing some of the equipment purchased for the new Royal into the current Royal, including new beds and mattresses to replace those in the current hospital.”

Proposed merger: an update Sharing your views with us on the merger From 7 May – 14 June a series of public and staff events took place all over the city to gather local opinions about our merger proposal. This was a great opportunity to gather feedback and to hear suggestions for how we can work together to improve care for our patients.

Sue Musson has been announced as the interim chair of the proposed new merged hospital trust. Sue will chair the Interim Board of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which is the name of the proposed merged organisation.

Chief executive interviews will take place in summer and Sue will be leading these interviews.

The feedback we received will be considered by the Boards in July and will be used to inform how the trusts come together.

The merger is expected to take place in October, subject to the decision making process of NHS regulators and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which are assessing the proposals.

Introducing Jo Williams We would like to welcome Jo Williams to the merger Project Management Office (PMO) team. Jo joins the team as the staff engagement lead and will be supporting staff across both trusts to get involved and keep up to date with the latest information about merger.

Jo Williams previously worked at Aintree University Hospital as an organisational development (OD) practitioner and has worked in the NHS for 16 years. She is looking forward to meeting staff across both trusts to discuss the merger, share information and support engagement.

Jo said: “I am really excited to begin my role supporting staff as we progress towards the merger. I am keen to get out and about and chat to the teams, catching up with familiar faces from Aintree and also meeting the teams over at the Royal and Broadgreen.

“I’m happy to visit individual departments and wards if it is easier so that I can chat to your team about merger; alternatively you can find me at the merger roadshows.

Phase 1 service integration The Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O), Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Urology reconfiguration is proposed to commence in a phased approach from September 2019. Formal consultation has started for staff directly affected by this service change. Implementation of the service changes will be over a period of three weeks, which will allow familiarisation and inductions to new areas of working for staff to take place.

A workforce consultation document has been developed for staff affected by the Phase 1 reconfiguration. This covers the

moves for T&O, ENT and urology. It sets out the operational details of the service changes, and the implications for staff, including how you will be involved, and how you can contribute.

The next steps will involve the formal consultation period with staff, which runs until Friday, 26 July. Meetings will take place with staff involved in their service groups, so that they have the chance to ask questions. This document is a technical paper, so it is quite long and contains specific language. It has been discussed it with staffside chairs. We will be adding a

Q&A shortly, which will give key points in more simple language.

Running alongside the consultation is the operational planning to mobilise the service changes. A quality assurance review is planned to take place on 19 July 2019, to gain assurance from each of the areas that the processes and procedures are in place to ensure a safe transfer of services with the appropriate workforce in place on day one.

Work on Phase 1 implementation is progressing and we would like to thank staff for their continued support.

Exclusive tour for donors To celebrate an amazing £100,000 raised in the past six months, R Charity invited special guests to an exclusive “thank you” event held in the new Royal. The guests included past donors and those who have really helped support the charity.

The money recently raised by R Charity has gone towards funding equipment such as mammography chairs and an ultrasound machine for the breast unit (which allows patients to sit during a mammography), a FEES machine for the stroke unit (which tests the swallowing ability of patients) and physiotherapy equipment.

Hosted in the spacious atrium of the new Royal, the event was also a look to the future. After listening to talks from members

of staff at the Trust and Laing O’Rourke about what R Charity is and the progression of the new Royal, guests were given the chance to view the state-of-the-art facility, with tours to areas of the new hospital such as theatres and critical care units.

Aimée Clare, senior community fundraising manager for R Charity, said: “Our event was a great opportunity to invite companies that have supported us in the past and might want to support us in the future to come to the new Royal and learn a little bit more about us. We’ll always be here, no matter what building we’re in, fundraising to improve the care, treatment and experience of our patients.

“We’re so grateful to Laing O’Rourke – they’ve been so supportive of R Charity and

this event. They’ve been wonderful and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Andy Thomson, project director at Laing O’Rourke, said: “This event was all about supporting R Charity. The new Royal is such a wonderful facility to hold this event in, and we were really keen for R Charity to use the space to illustrate what an amazing hospital this will be when it’s finally finished. The team are incredibly proud of what we do here and we’re proud to get involved with the charity – we know they do a huge deal of good work!”

Thanks to R supporters Run for R Charity!

R Charity is so excited to be this year’s official charity partner for the Arriva Scouse 5k!

A big thank you to everyone who took part in our Lip Sync For Your Life event at Garlands earlier this year. The evening was a massive success and raised over £8,000 for various departments in the Trust. To help ensure the best possible outcomes for these patients within our care, the R Charity fundraising team are continuously working with teams across the Trust to fund vital equipment and improve facilities.

Did you know that the day of the Scouse 5k, Sunday 27th October, will mark the last weekend of Breast Cancer Awareness Month? This is a national campaign to encourage women to check their breasts and raise vital funds to support breast cancer patients – many of who we care for in our Linda McCartney Centre.

We’d like to say huge congratulations to Louise Clarke and Kerrie McConville from our physiotherapy team who raised an incredible £1,887.58 by skydiving!

The girls are overwhelmed with all the support they received. The money will be used to purchase new equipment for our physiotherapy department. Well done ladies!

To mark this, we are looking for 300 very special runners to take part in the Scouse 5k and raise just £30 each to help local breast cancer patients being treated in our hospitals.

A massive thank you to Connor McGee, Alex Kean, Aaron Holt and Arlo James from St Mary’s Infant School, Newton-le-Willows, who raised £251 after cycling 100 laps around Mesnes Park to raise funds for the Linda McCartney Centre.

Thanks to Jo Dunbar who celebrated her 40th birthday and hosted a fundraising night and auction, raising £646 so far for us. The funds will be used to purchase an ABPI MESI Device for the Roald Dahl Centre.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Casino Royale Charity Ball to celebrate the amazing work of our renal team. Special thanks go to patients Tara Bashford and Reann Green, as well as all the amazing renal staff who joined us on the night! Tara and Reann have also raised £2,061, which will go towards refurbishing the Shared HD unit on the renal ward.

Every year, staff working at the Trust make such a positive difference to the lives of thousands of people across Liverpool and the North West.

We’re so grateful to Kim Cheung, whose Valentine Ball raised £1,513 and the Rotary Club of Liverpool who raised £499 from their Easter raffle.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to St Mathews and St James Church for raising £200, the Crafty Cycling Companions for raising £550 and a massive thank you to Olive Mount Residents Association who raised £1,900 – all funds which will really change the lives of our patients!

With the funds raised we are hoping to purchase new 3D imaging equipment, which is guaranteed to detect with pin point accuracy the smallest cancer cells, resulting in earlier diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients. This will reduce waiting times and ensure that our patients are treated faster, reducing the pressure and worry that goes with waiting for results.

Celebration at the staff awards We had an amazing evening celebrating the fantastic work of our staff at the Make a Difference Awards 2019. Held in the Dugout at Liverpool Football Club, staff enjoyed a three course meal followed by an awards ceremony and live music.

The awards recognise individuals who have shown exceptional quality above and beyond what is expected, and teams that have

demonstrated improvements in working practices that have, or will benefit patients.

“The awards were our opportunity to celebrate the excellent work, successes and the enormous contribution all of our staff make every day to improving the health and well-being of patients and colleagues,” said Peter Williams, chief executive of the Trust.

“It’s been a challenging 18 months within the Trust, so I just want to thank everyone for the continued passion that goes in to providing first class care. Your dedication and understanding does not go unnoticed – and these awards were the perfect way to recognise that. Thank you to everyone who came and to our generous sponsors for their support.”

Nursing Times showcase Nursing Times Careers Live headed to Liverpool for the first time this year, and together with Aintree University Hospital we headlined the event. It was a great opportunity for qualified nurses and students just getting started to take charge of their career and take a look at the recruitment opportunities available at our trusts.

Alongside being able to visit our exhibitor stand to ask questions and get advice, candidates also had the chance to have an interview on the day and find out whether they were successful in joining the Trust.

The two trusts headlining together meant we were able to explain how our

proposed merger will benefit the city and provide greater care for our patients.

A presentation from our chief nurse, Colin Hont, and Aintree’s chief nurse, Dianne Brown, showcased how the two major acute hospitals are planning to join up services and the opportunities and support available to progress in roles across both trusts.

Life through John Lennon’s eyes The younger sister of John Lennon, Julia Baird, visited the Royal to launch St Paul’s Eye Unit’s latest campaign, View from the Stars. The fundraising campaign is asking stars to donate their glasses or sunglasses to be auctioned off to fund pioneering research that will transform the treatment and care of eye disease.

The Beatles legend himself was very short sighted and was embarrassed to wear glasses until later in his career, when the iconic pair of round glasses became his signature look.

On her visit to St Paul’s, Julia brought along a pair of John’s spectacles that are currently on permanent display at the award-winning ‘The Beatles Story’, a visitor attraction based on the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool. John wore the glasses in 1971 whilst composing his classic song, ‘Imagine’. The glasses were passed through a machine that takes a measurement of the prescription called a focimeter, to see just how short sighted he was.

The test revealed that aged 31, John would have been severely short sighted, or myopic, and also had astigmatism. His lenses read -8.25 from his right eye, and -7.50 from his left.

“Without his glasses the world would have been blurred and distorted for John. He would have been able to see the end of the guitar and the frets, but anything else beyond that would have been difficult for him,” said Professor Simon Harding, a consultant at St Paul’s Eye Unit. “His short sightedness was at a level such that it’s likely it would have worsened later in life and may have become a threat to his vision.”

Poor vision seemed to run in the family, as Julia explained: “I’m thrilled to be involved in View from the Stars. John, our mother and I all wore glasses because we were all very short-sighted. It wasn’t cool to wear glasses when The Beatles played the Cavern, and when The Beatles became famous John wore contact lenses.

“However, that later changed and the style

of John’s glasses is one that is still instantly recognisable today; so we think it’s a great idea to use something as symbolic as them to kick start this amazing campaign to support St Paul’s Eye Unit’s work in Liverpool and around the world.

“It was fascinating to be given lenses that replicated what John would have seen without his glasses, and it wasn’t much at all. We want as many donations of glasses from stars as possible to ensure the auction raises an incredible amount for an incredible cause. I will be contacting friends to try and get the word out there and hopefully they will also encourage as many famous faces to join the cause. All we need is love!”

Welcome from the lead governor Welcome to the latest edition of your Membership Newsletter. There has been a break in producing this newsletter whilst we took action to ensure that our membership database was fully compliant with the new data protection laws. If you are receiving this newsletter as a member, thank you for taking the time to confirm your intention to remain on our database.

Whilst we were aspiring to become a foundation trust, a membership was formed which included both members of the public and staff.

Elections were held to appoint public and staff governors. These have and continue to operate in shadow form. At the beginning of the 2018/19 financial year, the shadow Council of Governors identified four areas to focus its attention on. These were patient flow, the Trust’s financial position, the new Royal and local health system reconfiguration.

The shadow Council of Governors meets on a quarterly basis and throughout 2018/19 updates were brought on these issues, among others, to provide evidence that the Board was taking

with Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Shadow Governors are playing a key role in the proposed merger process and will be required (as well as governors from Aintree) to approve the decision to merge.

This will require the shadow governors to check whether the Board has been thorough and comprehensive in reaching its proposal and that it has obtained and considered the interests of trust members, the public and stakeholders as part of the decision-making process.

Lead governor, Doreen Schlechte appropriate action. To support this process, shadow governors attend unannounced Patient Safety Walkabouts to gain a better understanding of how services are delivered at a ward level. These walkabouts involve talking with staff and patients and hearing their views. The views of Trust members and the general public are also sought and the shadow governors

have an established Membership and Engagement Committee to help organise opportunities for receiving feedback. These opportunities include attending events and online surveys.

The Trust is no longer planning to apply to be a foundation trust as a standalone entity. Rather the Trust is planning to merge

In the interim, the Trust continues to want to engage with the local population and ensure that the views of the public are taken into account. As a member of the Trust, you are a supporter and stakeholder and play an important role in the development of hospital services both now and in the future. In return, we will endeavour to keep you updated of developments.

Why become a member?

Membership is open to anyone aged 16 or over who live in the area of Liverpool and the rest of the North West and North Wales.

By being a member of the Trust you can ensure you are kept up to date with the latest Trust information and you will be invited to get involved in a number of different ways. For example you could get involved in patient reference groups and

provide us with your views on changes to services. Members could partake in the health information reviewer’s role to ensure information provided to our patients is fit for purpose. You may have an opportunity to take part in surveys and exclusive behind the scenes visits to some of the hospitals most ground breaking departments.

How involved you get is up to you. You may simply opt to receive a newsletter to

keep up to date with developments.

Being a member is a flexible voluntary role, where you can commit as much or as little time as you like. There is no financial benefit or cost. However, there will be satisfaction in being able to help shape local health services.

Although the Trust is not a Foundation Trust, it still has a membership and shadow governors.

Together with members, governors help local communities and staff to have a say in how the Trust provide its services. Our governors are made up of public governors, staff governors and appointed governors.

New chair appointed Following a competitive appointment process, governors of both Trusts accepted the recommendation of the interview panel to appoint Sue Musson as the chair of the Interim Board for the proposed merged organisation. Sue began her post on 1 July 2019 and will be chairing the interviews for the role of chief executive, scheduled to take place on 5 July 2019.

Previously the chair of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS FT, Sue has extensive experience in providing leadership to strengthen collaboration and strategic change; is an advocate of continuous improvement and committed to the on-going development of research and innovative education, all of which will be critical in the formation of the new organisation.

Sue will also become chair of the Board at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust from 1 September 2019, until the organisation’s proposed merger with Aintree University Hospital Foundation Trust.

Sue said: “I look forward to the opportunities that will arise from bringing together the two organisations to improve the experience of patients and make the Trust the best place to work for all our staff.”

Deliver high quality care to all patients by improving the way we admit and discharge

Care transcending borders A Trust Physiotherapist has been passing on the rehabilitation skills learnt here at home at a hospital in Ethiopia. Nicola Jarman, a member of the charity, North West Orthopaedic Trauma Alliance for Africa (NOTAA), has been travelling to Hawassa Hospital in Southern Ethiopia since 2017 to help improve trauma care in Africa.

“Orthopaedic surgery was only introduced in Ethiopia in 2015 so they are very much in the early phases at the moment, many decades behind the UK,” said Nicola, who currently works in the limb reconstruction team at Broadgreen Hospital. “The hospital has very basic equipment, limited resources and rarely has running water.”

Trauma was identified as the country’s biggest killer. The increase in road developments and infrastructure has led to many accidents and complex traumatic injuries. The charity, which incorporates a multi-disciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, A&E consultant, A&E nurse and physiotherapists from local trusts, have been on multiple visits to Hawassa to help the staff learn how to care for these patients.

To date there has been a vast improvement in all areas, one such area being physiotherapy, in which the teaching element has been both productive and successful. Prior to NOTAA’s input, rehab was an unknown concept and patient

“Some patients would be left in bed for several weeks following orthopaedic surgery and often would be carried home by relatives. We’ve been teaching the nurses the core basics of physio: early mobilisation techniques, exercises and how to use equipment.”

One patient that Nicola helped to care for ended up being discharged home three days after his operation. The possibility of earlier discharges has surprised the team at Hawassa but has been gratefully embraced. “The nurses are really enthusiastic. They keep us informed about positive patient outcomes via social media and are putting into practice all they have learnt.

On each visit, we can see a huge change on the wards,” said Nicola, who has recently returned from a visit and is due to return in November.

We love Lucy The Trust has launched an exciting new programme with Pets as Therapy, a charity where people can take their pets into places where people may want to see and stroke them, and help to recover from illness. To kick start the initiative, one of our volunteers, Kate Lewis, brought her lovely rescue greyhound, Lucy, onto ward 5 at Broadgreen Hospital to meet with patients.

It was piloted on the stroke rehabilitation unit, and the Trust are now working on a programme for Lucy to regularly visit the unit to support patients and their families.

“Pets as Therapy is used to enhance patient experience and there’s a growing evidence base to show that interaction with pets enhances wellbeing. It acts as a way to reassure patients, it could be a reminder of a pet they have had to leave at home, or pets they had at a time in their life,” said Alison Germain-Martin, volunteer services manager at the Trust.

“It’s been amazing. I feel quite overwhelmed and emotional just seeing the reaction of the patients and the impact it’s had, just stroking Lucy and talking to her.”

For Kate, she thinks that Lucy is the perfect fit for something like Pets as Therapy: “Her temperament is very gentle, playful – we all love her. Her first visit went really well, she liked getting to visit everyone and really made herself at home.”

National award for Liverpool team Congratulations to the UK Imported Fever Service who won a Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care award at a recent ceremony in London.

The team, which includes clinicians at the Royal and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, received the medical education and training award for their national clinical teleconference - part of a UK service that provides diagnostic support and advice for complex imported infection cases.

The Imported Fever Service is a national onestop shop for advice about the laboratory tests/diagnosis, clinical diagnosis and management of rarer imported infections. It’s also the compulsory national phone-in point for investigations to be done for infections such as Ebola and monkeypox.

“It is coordinated by the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL) of Public Health England at Porton Down, where the core laboratory work is done. About 6 years ago, clinicians in Liverpool and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD) in London teamed up with them to be on call 24 hours every day to provide extra clinical support,” explained Dr Nick Beeching, consultant in tropical and infectious diseases. Nick has been the designated lead for Liverpool since the service began.

“Liverpool is on call one week then London the next, alongside with RIPL. We have a weekly teleconference to discuss an interesting recent case, and these phoneins are amazing educational value. Over 200 doctors around the UK and overseas phone in to listen to the discussion, which follows a case presentation and a clinical discussion, usually led by the Liverpool and HTD teams.

“To win this award was a nice recognition for the team - especially for the senior trainees at RIPL who co-ordinate the weekly teleconference, which is specifically what the prize was for.”

Other Trust teams shortlisted for awards included the e-handover team and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital simulationbased preceptorship.

Ritual fun at Light Night Members of the Royal’s Tropical and Infectious Disease Unit (TIDU) teamed up with the Liverpool Medical Institution (LMI) to talk about infection prevention with over 450 visitors to the LMI during Liverpool’s annual Light Night festival in May. The theme for this year’s festival was, Rituals, and the TIDU team provided training about hand washing, using a special ultraviolet light box to show which

parts of the hand are usually missed. This proved particularly popular with children!

The team also gave several demonstrations of the ritual of ‘donning’ (putting on) and ‘doffing’, (taking off) personal protective equipment, known as PPE. This protects staff looking after patients with highly dangerous infections and was used on Ward 3X last year when we admitted patients with monkeypox and MERS from overseas.

The TIDU team are part of the national High Consequence Infectious Disease Network, for which Maz Hoyle at the Royal is the national lead nurse for training in PPE use. She was joined by matrons Suzanne Marshall and Angela Gillespie, and Dr Nick Beeching to train the unsuspecting caretaker of the LMI, Malcolm Price, in safe donning and doffing, watched by over 100 visitors.

The LMI library staff also laid on a gruesome exhibition of equipment used in past medical practices, such as bloodletting and trepanning, which is making

holes in the skull to let out bad ‘humours’.

“I am grateful to the team for giving up their Friday evening to provide these demonstrations,” said Dr Nick Beeching, honorary librarian and trustee of the LMI. “We were delighted with the enthusiastic response from visitors. It made us realise how interested people are in infection protection and in the specialised work we do at the Royal.”
