Patients benefit from new cardiac lunch club

It’s great to be able to welcome Spring following such a tough winter for the NHS. I am sure you will have watched the news over the New Year to see reports of our national health service under pressure from an increase in people needing hospital care.

This was mirrored in our hospitals, where we have had more than a ten percent increase in emergency admissions compared to the same three month period last year. As a result, a greater number of people attending the Emergency Departments at Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals would have sadly faced a longer wait to be seen and treated than the four-hour standard.

The support from our staff in such challenging times has been consistently excellent. And we are also incredibly grateful to the public for their understanding and appreciation. We are working with colleagues across the Trust and the wider health community to implement changes to improve the services emergency patients receive and ultimately ensure they only spend the time that is necessary in hospital.

We were fortunate that the flu virus did not take hold in our hospitals in the way it did in other parts of the country this winter. Making sure our staff are armed against the flu gives us much greater resilience at a time when we know our hospitals will be busy, so it’s pleasing to note that this year we achieved our target of 70% of staff taking up the flu vaccination.

Thank you to all those staff who had their jab. Thank you, too, to our Occupational Health team and their peer vaccinator recruits, who drove the vaccination campaign.

In this edition Take a look at the improvements we have made to our wards where we care for patients with dementia. They are proving very effective. Read more on page 4. We are also making plans to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS on 5 July 2018. We’d love to hear your stories, so turn to page 3 to find out how you can contribute to our local commemorations.

The NHS turns 70 this year – Help us celebrate On Thursday 5 July, the NHS will be celebrating its 70th birthday and we have lots of exciting events lined up across Hinchingbrooke, Peterborough City, and Stamford Hospitals to mark this momentous occasion. We will be announcing our plans in the coming months, but in the meantime here are a few ways that you can get involved: Share your memories with us Over the last 70 years, the NHS has been at the centre of some tremendous medical breakthroughs, including the world’s first liver, heart and lung transplant, and it continues to drive innovations in patient care.

We’re inviting patients, visitors, as well as past and present staff members to share their memories of our hospitals as we look back over the past 70 years. We would also love to see any old photos you might have.

Tell us about your experiences of our hospitals We’re launching a special project to celebrate the great work that goes on across our hospitals, as well as the staff that make it all possible. Service Improvements

Emergency Department gets a Facelift Hinchingbrooke’s Emergency Department has undergone a refurbishment to update the children’s cubicles, resuscitation area and isolation room.

The new paint scheme is ‘dementia friendly’ with easy to clean whiterock on the walls.

There’s also a dedicated room for mental health patients allowing people to be cared for in a suitable environment.

Three separate cubicles have been specifically adapted for children within minors, majors and resus.

The waiting room has separate paediatric and adult areas, with a play area for the children.

Stacey Hackett, Capital Projects Team, said: “I’m delighted at the results and would like to thank staff for managing the inconvenience. The team worked closely with contractors to ensure minimal disruption.”

Trust partners with DisabledGo Our Trust recently partnered with DisabledGo, a leading provider of accessibility information for disabled people in the UK. The partnership creates a dynamic, accessible, online guide which can be used as a live information stream for patients, staff and visitors attending Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford Hospitals.

Using the DisabledGo site you can find out where a department is located in relation to the main entrance, whether there are lifts to access other floors, if there is a hearing loop fitted at reception, in-depth information about the building’s design, accessibility and facilities, plus much more.

Lesley Crosby, Deputy Chief Nurse said: “DisabledGo have a tried and tested formula which has worked well at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. We’re proud to now also be providing this facility across Peterborough City and Stamford Hospitals. All three hospitals have been assessed by trained DisabledGo surveyors who have experienced the accessibility of our buildings for themselves.

“In Peterborough alone there are 32,773 people living with a disability and this figure

equates to one sixth of the local population.

This partnership will help ensure that anyone with an additional need or disability, visiting our hospitals, has clear information about how to access all areas.

“The excellent work done by DisabledGo has helped us to understand what we can do to support all people within our communities and we will be launching our new accessibility strategy in the coming months.”

Improvements to make wards Dementia friendly Wards A9 and B14 at Peterborough City Hospital have been transformed into warm and welcoming spaces as part of an initiative to improve the hospital environment for patients with dementia.

The Trust has been working with Rempods, a company that specialise in improving clinical environments for people with dementia, to install specialist wallpaper that imitates rooms in the home.

“The four-bedded bays have been transformed with the help of Rempods.

Patients can now make themselves comfortable in the living area, where they can enjoy listening to music or reading a book. Alternatively, they can spend time in the dining area where they can eat their meals and socialise with their visitors and other patients.”

Patients benefit from new cardiac lunch club Occupational Therapists and nursing staff on the Cardiac Ward at Peterborough City Hospital have worked closely together to set up their very own cardiac lunch club for patients.

The initiative was set up by Occupational Therapist, Jenny Allum, to help patients establish as much of a normal routine as possible by getting them to eat their meals at the table rather than staying in bed.

Within the first week, staff noticed a positive different in patients participating in the Cardiac Lunch Club.

Jenny said: “We’re encouraging patients who are able to move around on their own or with the assistance of one staff member to sit at the

End PJ Paralysis Campaign Success The Trust recently took part in the regional #EndPJParalysis campaign run by NHS Improvement, aimed at getting patients up and dressed in their own clothes, in order to aid their recovery and enable them to get back to their own homes sooner.

During the 100 day challenge, the 9 Trusts taking part had a fantastic 91,728 patients up, dressed and moving and our Trust contributed 15,903 patients to this total.

The #EndPJParalysis campaign was the idea of Trust Project Nurse, Lisa Sharp, who has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Pressure Care and Tissue Viability Nurse of the Year award at the British Journal of Nursing Awards. We wish Lisa the very best of luck.

Patients enjoying the Cardiac Lunch Club

Support for patients in their last days of life Peterborough City and Stamford Hospitals have been using the Personalised Care Plans for last days of life for approximately 2 years and these have enabled staff to make the patient’s final moments more comfortable. The plans allow the domestic staff, catering staff, porters and all MDTS to understand that the patient is reaching end of life, the need to offer drinks to relatives, provide emotional support and be appropriate with noise levels, etc.

The scheme was launched at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in February and patients will be

identified by the same SWAN logo already in use at Peterborough City Hospital and Stamford.

Bev Goose, Lead Palliative Care Nurse, said: “The Personalised Care Plans for last days of life ensure that all staff working on a ward can be aware of a patient who is in their final hours or days of life and offer individualised, holistic and personal care to the patient, family and carers. We only get one chance to get the care right and we need to make sure we get it right every time. The Personalised Care Plans for the last days of life and SWAN should help to make this happens.”

HOSPITAL HEROES

Peterborough Nurse helps cardiac arrest patients on A16 A staff nurse from Peterborough City Hospital leapt into action to help a man who had suffered a cardiac arrest on the A16.

Alex Clarke, staff nurse in theatre recovery, was driving home when she noticed a group huddled around a man lying on the ground. Knowing her nursing background could help, Alex stopped to see what she could do.

She said: “When I arrived, an off duty firefighter and his brother had already begun performing CPR and chest compressions. It was just one of those situations where you go into autopilot.”

Alex and the brothers took turns to perform CPR while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Once paramedics were on the scene, Alex continued to assist.

“I have a duty of care to my patients and that doesn’t stop when I’m outside the hospital,” says Alex. “This was the first time I had experienced this kind of medical emergency outside of the hospital – you see it happen to other people, yet to experience it first-hand is completely different.

“My partner isn’t in the healthcare profession, so I wasn’t able to talk about the experience and decompress until I spoke to my colleagues when I came into work the next day and it still played on my mind for a few days.”

Cardiac nurse saves heart-attack patient in mid-air flight drama Cardiac consultant nurse, Julie Holroyd, leapt into action when a passenger suffered a heart attack during a flight to Sri Lanka.

Julie Holroyd, who works at Peterborough City Hospital, booked a holiday to Sri Lanka with her husband Paul, but her getaway quickly changed into an emergency situation half way through the 11-hour night flight when the cabin crew asked for medical assistance.

Julie quickly assessed the patient’s condition and it was apparent that he was having a heart attack. With limited medication and equipment, she quickly administered pain relief, IV fluids and tried to increase his blood pressure, but the flight had to continue with five hours still left on the journey before reaching Sri Lanka.

She said: “There were two doctors on the

flight, but their experience was as a paediatric oncologist and orthopaedic doctor. I was the most qualified to deal with the situation but they offered moral support.”

Julie stayed by her patient’s side on the floor of the galley area for five hours and reassured his wife throughout the situation before handing over the reins to the emergency medical team in Sri Lanka where they confirmed the heart attack before transferring him to a local hospital.

She said: “I had an obligation that day and I knew that I was experienced enough to be able to diagnose the symptoms, but it is daunting without the equipment and your team around you.”

Julie is now looking forward to her next break a little closer to home in Tuscany with her husband.

Staff Focus

Fond farewell to Hinchingbrooke Midwife Maternity staff at Hinchingbrooke Hospital have bid farewell to their very own ‘Call the Midwife’ Diana Galligan, after 50 years of service to the NHS. Diana began her career as a student nurse in 1968 and qualified as a midwife in 1973, when both nursing and midwifery practice were very different.

Many women delivered their babies at home and Diana would set off on her pushbike with a wicker basket containing delivery equipment. She has had numerous different uniforms over that time, from dresses to scrubs, starched cotton aprons to disposable plastic ones, frilly hats to no hats and then back into a modern uniform dress.

She worked for the NHS in Salford, Croydon, Huntingdon County Hospital and the Rosie Maternity Unit, in Cambridge, before joining Hinchingbrooke Hospital in 1985. She was promoted to Senior Midwife, became a Supervisor of Midwives and in 2004 gained a Masters degree from the University of Manchester.

Diana said: “I remember working on the oldstyle Nightingale Wards, where your cloak was an essential piece of uniform as you walked through the draughty corridors. The most seriously ill patients would be closest to the ward office; there was no ITU. On the maternity wards a Pinard stethoscope was the only piece of equipment that we would have to listen to the baby’s heartbeat. There were no Sonicaids, Ultrasound scanners or CTG’s. Midwives would therefore have to deal with emergency situations such as undiagnosed twins or breech births at home or in hospital, but the advances in modern technology has made the birthing experience very different now.”

Sarah Grieve, Labour Ward Manager for North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Diana always strived to ensure that all women had exceptional, evidence based care and that they were always listened to and supported in the choices they made.

She is truly an inspiration and we’re very sad to lose her but wish her every happiness in her retirement.”

60 Seconds with Occupational Therapist Zeba Jabeen Zeba joined Peterborough City Hospital in August 2017 and is one of 40 Occupational Therapists across the Trust helping patients in their journey to recovery.

New voluntary service benefits ophthalmology patients at Hinchingbrooke Hospital

“Being an Occupational Therapist allows me to work with a diverse range of patients, assessing their needs using occupational analysis; assessing function and setting goals to support each patient in a way that’s right for them.

“I work closely with patients during a very difficult time, helping them continue with their lives by enabling them to take charge in moments they struggle to.

Patients visiting the Ophthalmology Department at Hinchingbrooke Hospital will now benefit from a new service delivered by the hospital’s volunteers.

Volunteers are now available to sit with patients who are feeling particularly anxious about their surgery, offering them comfort and support as they undergo their procedure.

“Hospital can be a very daunting place for patients, especially in theatre where they no longer have their loved ones with them to provide reassurance,” says Barry Pridmore, Volunteer Manager. “The volunteers act as a reassuring presence and we’ve received lots of positive feedback from patients, who have benefitted from the service.”

As part of her first rotation, Zeba is working with patients who have undergone surgery or an amputation.

“There’s a quote that sums up Occupational Therapy very well: ‘A doctor will save your life but an Occupational Therapist will help you live your life, to your fullest potential.”

Stamford Focus

Stamford MRI – One year on The MRI scanner at Stamford Hospital has celebrated its one year anniversary this year, the scanner arrived on 8 January 2017.

The team of MRI Specialist Radiographers operate the scanner 12.5 hours a day and are assisted by clinical support staff Monday to Friday between 7am and 8pm. It has been a great boost for residents in Stamford and in the surrounding areas.

Karen Smith, MRI Section Head, said: “The MRI Scanner has benefitted over 4,000 patients, many of whom would have previously had to travel to Peterborough to have the scan.

“This is the Trust’s fourth MRI scanner and has helped us to meet diagnostic waiting list targets. In particular complex cancer staging and MSK cases have benefited from some of the MRI equipment features such as wider bore and faster imaging options. We are also successfully scanning bariatric and claustrophobic patients who would otherwise be unable to undertake MRI.” All MRI staff have been trained to use the

new MRI equipment and rotate across all three sites to maintain the 7/7 MRI service.

team culture and in 2017 contributed to the open day by showcasing the scanner to hundreds of interested visitors.

CIPS donates £3,500 to Stamford Hospital Stamford Hospital was recently presented with a generous donation from the Chartered Institute for Procurement and Supply (CIPS).

The organisation, based in Easton-onthe-Hill, donated £3,500, which allowed staff on the Greenwood Ward to buy a hyfrecator – a piece of equipment to help

cauterise blood vessels, particularly in the dermatology and plastics department.

Greenwood Ward is a Day Treatment Unit which treats more than 5,000 patients a year.

Tracey Hydes, Ward Sister on Greenwood Ward said: “We are very grateful to CIPs

for their generosity. Their donation will make a big difference to the effective service we can provide to our community here in Stamford and our patients will benefit from being able to access state of the art equipment.

“Previously, we had to borrow a hyfrecator from Outpatients and sometimes it wasn’t available when we needed it. This donation has allowed us to buy the machine as well as the consumables we need and means we now have it available permanently in the department.”

Gerry Walsh, Group CEO, CIPS said, “The Community Fund has been running for a few years now and this is one of the most significant contributions we’ve made to the health of the local residents so we’re delighted to have become involved.

Maternity Focus

Midwifery led Birthing Unit celebrates birth of 1000th baby of 2017 On Christmas Day 2017, the Midwifery Led Birthing Unit (MLBU) at Peterborough City Hospital celebrated the birth of the 1000th baby of the year. Baby Majid was born at 12:29pm.

The MLBU facilitates women to have their babies in a relaxing non-clinical environment and consists of four individual birthing rooms and a birthing pool. There is also a range of equipment to promote active natural birth in a home-fromhome environment.

Fran Stephens, Divisional Head of Midwifery and Nursing said: “This is such an exciting time for the Midwifery Led Birthing Unit. Since the

unit began triaging separately from the delivery suite the number of births within the MLBU has significantly increased, with 956 babies born on the unit in 2016, an increase from 894 births in 2015. This equates to 20% of our total births and is a wonderful achievement.

By encouraging women to birth in a low risk, home from home environment we are promoting active birth which in turn helps to prevent unnecessary intervention.”

The Infant Feeding Team

New Antenatal classes for expectant parents Expectant parents in and around the Peterborough area will be able to benefit from several new classes that are being held by the community maternity team.

The new Birth and New born information classes are run by the Peterborough and Stamford community midwifery service and offer an informative, friendly and welcoming atmosphere for parents to meet and speak to community midwives and maternity support services.

The maternity infant feeding team at Peterborough City Hospital are also offering breast feeding workshops, which will discuss the value of breast milk, health benefits for mum and baby and relationship building.

Homebirth workshops are also available for women who are considering a homebirth and will provide the opportunity to meet and speak with a team of midwives, who can help and guide on the options available.

X-ray porter shortlisted for Unsung Hero award X-ray porter Adie Gillett has been shortlisted for a national award that recognises the hard work and dedication of non-medical NHS staff members.

Adie has worked at Hinchingbrooke Hospital for seven years and was nominated for an Unsung Hero Award by Nurse Michelle Gray for his caring and reassuring attitude towards patients

The Unsung Hero Awards are the only national award for Non-Medical/ Non-Clinical NHS & healthcare staff and volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Adie said: “It’s an honour to be nominated for the award. I work for Patient Services but I’m permanently based in X-Ray. I like to try and put people at ease as much as I can, especially the elderly patients. I tell them they only have to

ISAS Accreditation The Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) has awarded the Diagnostic Imaging department at Peterborough City Hospital accreditation for the fourth year running.

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is licensed by The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and the College of Radiographers (ScoR) to manage and deliver ISAS. Every five years ISAS review the standard of their accreditation and last year the service released their ISAS Standard v3 2017.

Claire Bevan, Clinical Governance Radiographer said: “We are thrilled to have received the accreditation again, it’s something the team always takes great pride in and we hope patients continue to see the growth and devotion of the department to providing excellent care.”

The ISAS assessors came for a two day visit which involved taking a look around the department, talking to patients and staff and reviewing all documentation.

Hinchingbrooke Hospital’s awardwinning Garden Restaurant team are celebrating after maintaining their 5 Star Food Hygiene Rating.

The team were first awarded the maximum rating two years ago and at their follow-up inspection recently were thrilled to find out that their hard work and commitment had been recognised once more.

Head Chef Lisa Normanton, said: “We are over the moon to be awarded the 5 Star Hygiene Rating. To me, it proves that the team has maintained their good work – and in fact I think they have got even better.

“The staff worked hard to achieve that high standard two years ago and have worked continuously to maintain it - This is all down to the people in the kitchen.”

5* Rating for Medi Medirest Catering at Peterborough City Hospital has retained their five star standard following an Environmental Health Inspection in January.

“At the inspection, the officers check: • How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored • The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities • How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future.

To get the top rating of ‘5’, businesses must do well in all three elements.”

Dr Suzy Lishman, Consultant Histopathologist at the Trust has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for her contribution to pathology services

She is an asset to our Trust and we are proud of her continued work towards enhancing pathology services for patients.”

During her presidency, she was instrumental in raising the profile of the organisation and strengthening its influence with politicians and policy makers, as well as promoting pathology as a career to school children and the public.

Dr Lishman said: “I am honoured to receive such a prestigious award. It was a privilege to serve as President of the Royal College of Pathologists and a pleasure to represent pathologists and laboratory scientists, who work hard to analyse

Endoscopy unit receives full reaccreditation The Endoscopy Department at Peterborough City Hospital has recently received reaccreditation from the Joint Advisory Group (JAG). JAG sets the national standards for competence and quality and is an absolute requirement for the undertaking of bowel cancer screening.

The ongoing process is based on data submitted and a site visit from inspectors which covers all areas; clinical quality, patient

experience, workforce and training.

Dr Callum Gardener, Divisional Director for Emergency and Medicine, said: “JAG reaccreditation will enable the department to continue to maintain high clinical standards.

London Marathon

Trust staff take on th Some of our active staff members have achieved places in this year’s London Marathon which takes place on 22 April, and will be raising money for their individual charities.

David Hardiman, Ward Manager of the Cardiac Unit at Peterborough City Hospital

David is running for the British Heart Foundation and after completing his first half marathon in January, is hoping to get around the London course in under four hours.

He said: “I’m a fit person, and have always wanted to do the London Marathon for the British Heart Foundation. Obviously, in my profession I have seen how heart disease affects the young and old, how it is such a life-limiting disease; it is my personal passion to promote and support the British Heart Foundation.”

Susan Gosby, Senior Healthcare Assistant in Diagnostic Imaging at Peterborough City Hospital

Susan was fortunate to be offered a place running the London Marathon with the ovarian cancer charity Ovacome, a charity close to her heart after losing her grandmother many years ago from ovarian cancer.

With finding out late that she had a place, she’s thrown herself into training, running 3-4 times a week with a long run at the weekend. She’s even found some hills to increase her resistance! “Just getting around alive is the aim!” she says!

Susan will be holding a series of events, including a fashion show, cake stall, as well as, a special event at the Bourne Corn Exchange with the well-know 50’s style band, The Hound Dogs, to raise funds.

David Ward, Acute Medicine Consultant at Hinchingbrooke Hospital David is a member and coach for the club BRJ Run and Tri in Huntingdon. This will be David’s 3rd London Marathon, and his 4th overall, having also completed Brighton’s marathon in his personal best time of 3.31 hours.

David prefers triathlons, however. His greatest achievement was an Ironman distance at the Outlaw in Nottingham last year.

He raised a lot of money for charity in previous London Marathons, but feels he has exhausted all his contacts for money so is not looking for sponsorship this year.

At 70 years old Morag Roberts has received a good for age place at this year’s marathon. She has earned a spot in the 70-74 category, after completing the race in five hours and fifty-eight minutes last year.

She said: “For three years I have managed to secure a place in the London Marathon, the first time was a spur of the moment charity place sign up with the British Red Cross as my chosen charity. The second time the British Red Cross approached asking me to run for them again and this time I have a good for age place.”

Caroline Walker, Deputy CEO and Finance Director Caroline has always kept fit and had sport in her life but apart from in the gym has never run long distances before, as her forte has been as a sprinter. She has always wanted to run a marathon, but has only previously experienced it from a different perspective – handing out sponges at the Nottingham marathon.

Two years ago Morag joined her local running club, The Stamford Striders; she completed a ten week trial in 2016 and then another one last year before officially joining the group. Morag goes running every Tuesday with her local running club, twice a week on her own and Rutland Water Parkrun on a Saturday. The Stamford Striders have their next ten week beginner’s course starting 8 May.

Having been told that she has arthritis and also needs a knee replacement, contrary to most people, Caroline has decided it’s now or never! She’s following the 17 week plan for beginners on the London Marathon website, which helps runners reach 10 miles by the end of January, 15 miles by the end of February and 20 miles by the end of March.

Caroline is on track, and succeeded in running her 10 miles before January was out.

Caroline has just moved to Peterborough, and decided to support a local children’s charity.

Her aim is to beat her 5:58 time from last year, and she will to be celebrating with a massage, bath, meal and an early night in her London hotel!

“I intend to never ever do a marathon again!” she said. “I don’t know if I can do it before my knees give in, but I love London, and am looking forward to running the course.”

The Comfort Mummy Foundation donate Comfort Packs to Bereaved families Bereaved parents cared for on the Maternity Unit at Peterborough City Hospital will now be given a special comfort pack thanks to a generous donation from the Comfort Mummy Foundation, an organisation founded by bereaved mums to help others.

The Comfort Mummy Foundation was cofounded by Emma Fordham, who sadly lost her son Jacob at 24 weeks.

The packs are made up of comforting items such as, fluffy socks and a candle along with more practical items including heat lotion to help with labour pains, deodorant and lip balm for women who have been admitted unexpectedly.

Emma said: “During a routine check-up, I heard the words every expectant mother dreads ‘I’m sorry there is no heartbeat’. My world fell apart. My beautiful baby boy was born sleeping on 6 October 1993 and despite being surrounded by people, I felt very alone in my grief.”

Lesley Carline, Bereavement Midwife, said: “We are very grateful to the Comfort Mummy Foundation for their donation. It is a lovely gesture of support from one parent to another, who has been in a similar situation and we can’t thank Emma and Jade enough for their support.”

Patient Services at Hinchingbrooke Hospital were recently presented with six brand new wheelchairs, thanks to the hard work and generosity of the Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital The new chairs will be kept in the main entrance and used to help transport patients around the hospital Pat Butcher, chairman of the Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us in our fundraising for the wheelchairs. Providing wheelchairs to enable those who are less mobile to get around is a marvellous thing.”

Patient Services Manager Bev Balls said: “The wheelchairs have really made a difference to people coming in to the main entrance. The feedback we have been getting is fantastic.

The chairs are comfortable, easy to keep clean and much easier to manoeuvre.”

Friends raised an incredible £10,000 to support Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Their fundraising has been supported by individuals, including Gwenda King who raised £1,000 by selling handmade greetings cards, to the Rotary Club of Huntingdon, which raised £2,500 at a charity concert.

Each wheelchair cost more than £470 and represents a significant investment that will benefit many patients.

Peterborough City Hospital leads the way in Dementia Research Peterborough City Hospital has been commended after becoming the first site to recruit ten patients to an innovative Dementia clinical research study.

Rehabilitation Equipment Amnesty

The hospital is one of 20 sites taking part in ASCRIBED, an observational study that compares markers of inflammation and injury found in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of people with and without confirmed dementia who are in hospital undergoing treatment for a fractured hip.

The Trust is calling for patients to return any rehabilitation equipment they may find in their homes, sheds, garages and lofts.

Alan Pope, Clinical Research Nurse, said: “Research suggests that major injury such as a hip fracture can cause problems with memory in the future, but there is little research into why this happens. The ASCRIBED study explores this relationship to understand the effect of inflammation on the development of Dementia.

Katie Hill from the Trust’s Rehabilitation Services said: “We’re asking patients to return any crutches, commodes, walking frames or toileting equipment that are no longer used or needed.

“Any equipment that is returned will be sterilised and cleaned to high standards before being re-used, where possible, to the benefit of other patients.”

“Overall, we have received a positive reception from patients, the majority of whom are keen to be involved.”

Since the study opened at Peterborough City Hospital in June 2017, the team has recruited 28 patients which is over a quarter of the overall number of patients recruited to the national study.

The study is run by the University of East Anglia and funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Patients can hand in items to Peterborough City Hospital or Hinchingbrooke Hospital main receptions, or Stamford Hospital’s physio department.

Change in Patient Administration System The Trust is changing its Patient Administration system (PAS), which stores all patient demographic information (name, address, etc.) and details of the patient’s journey through our hospitals. The current systems at Peterborough, Stamford and Hinchingbrooke are more than 25 years old and need to be replaced.

There will be a number of benefits, including improving patient safety and compliance with targets and standards, increasing productivity and efficiency savings.

Medical Director, Dr Kanchan Rege, said: “Our Trust’s IT department is currently working on a large project to unify our Patient Administration System. More of our clinical staff are working at both Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals and have to navigate entirely different clinic systems at each site to perform tasks including looking up test results, accessing patient correspondence and dictating letters.

We will be rolling out the popular and userfriendly E-track system to Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Additionally, patients who receive care at both sites will no longer have to be registered separately at each site. This extensive but exciting project will truly unify the Trust and take us even further towards providing seamless care for our patients at

all of our hospitals.”

This is a very complicated undertaking which our dedicated project team has been working on since April 2017. The new Medway PAS is set to go live in October 2018.
