Rising to the challenge Like many hospitals we’ve had a really busy winter. We had increases in the incidents of flu as well as norovirus but you’ve all risen to the challenge and provided the best care possible to our patients.

Award-winning staff Each month staff from across our Trust are recognised for the part they play in giving our patients the best possible experience when they come to our hospitals.

Teams can be nominated for Team of the Month, while volunteers are recognised in the Volunteer of the Month. Each employee of the month will also be considered for the Employee of the Year award.

Colleagues, patients, carers, and visitors can nominate someone who they think deserves to be recognised for the excellent care and service they provide and the difference it has made.

The award is open to all staff including those working behind the scenes - either in support functions or non-clinical roles - or to those who work in the front line.

I know that our staff have faced some difficult circumstances and it has been exceptionally challenging but I want to say a massive thank you to all of you for your hard work and dedication.

We’ve also had lots of letters and cards as well as messages through social media showing how patients really appreciate the great work that you’re doing. The things that you do on a daily basis are changing lives and people appreciate your work.

Cooking up a treat TV chef Gino D’Acampo recently spent time at the Royal cheering up our staff and patients and of course cooking them lunch while filming for ITV. The segment ‘Gino at your Service’ is being shown as part of ITV’s This Morning, showcasing our wonderful and hardworking staff.

Keen to find out all about our nurses and what they do each day, Gino spent the afternoon following nursing staff Tracey Collins, Marianne Matic and Pauline Ellis around the Acute Medical Unit. After changing into his scrubs, he discovered the right way to make the beds, take a patient’s blood pressure and observed an infection control nurse administer intravenous medication.

Gino also got to see a range of patients with a whole variety of medical issues, truly discovering how fast-paced and busy our hospitals can be each day. He spent time talking to the patients, cheering them up with his positive personality and jokes while reassuring them that they’re in safe hands with our nurses and doctors.

Gino said: “I’ve had the pleasure to meet all the nurses, doctors and patients and it’s been an amazing experience. The amount of work the nurses do is incredible.

“The doctors are very professional and I met all the patients when I went around and said hi to everybody. This is a special message for all the patients, I wish you all get better, you’re in safe hands here, this is one of the best hospitals I’ve visited.”

On his second day at the Royal, Gino wanted to say a little thank you to staff so arranged to cook them lunch in the canteen using his mamma’s recipe to create a delicious lasagne.

The TV crew filmed Gino preparing the dish in the Royal’s kitchens alongside ISS staff, and he then served 20 members of staff from across both hospital sites.

Additionally, Gino was presented with an honorary RLB Healthcare Assistant badge as it is an emblem of skill, competence and commitment once staff have completed our RLB Programme ensuring they can deliver safe and excellent care to patients.

Improving the quality of life for our patients

Community fund to create a Therapies Garden at Broadgreen Hospital We have recently been awarded £4,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community fund to develop an inspiring Therapies Garden at Broadgreen Hospital.

Hundreds of shoppers had the chance to vote for their preferred community project throughout local Tesco stores and Broadgreen Hospital received the top prize amount.

The Therapies Garden is being supported by the Complex Rehabilitation Ward and Stroke Unit at Broadgreen, together with Macmillan Cancer Support and Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital.

Ian Stenton, head of sustainability said: “The funds will be used to create a wonderful outside space that can be used by patients to grow food and tend to plants. Plus we will also purchase a cabin that can be a retreat for patients when the weather is poor.

“The garden is being designed with therapies staff to ensure it provides the maximum benefit for our patients.”

We are hoping to start developing the Therapies Garden this spring once all our plans are confirmed for the space.

Kinga Kisielewska, senior physiotherapist at the Stroke Transitional Unit in Broadgreen, said: “For stroke patients access to the garden will provide a space to practice their outdoor mobility, challenge their balance as well as have a space where they can enjoy some time off the ward. They will be able to show their loved ones the plants they have planted, experience the different smells of plants and herbs as well as stimulate their vision with the different textures and colours.

“Some of our patients will experience visual and sensory problems following their stroke and having the garden available will provide the benefits of stimulation to all

their senses as well as give them a purpose of creating something. Being able to plant seeds and watch them grow may prove motivational to some patients and help with their recovery. It may also bring some inspiration for when they are attending the art group organised by our occupational therapists.”

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it has provided more than £40 million to over 9,700 community projects.

Bereavement Officers are also there to help with the immense amount of paperwork involved, helping families through the process of registering a death.

Barbara, who won Technician of the Year at the 2015 Good Funeral Awards, told eHospice: “Working in a mortuary is an extremely worthwhile profession which is so misunderstood by society. Even now with changes in attitudes towards death and dying, most people do not realise what is involved for caring for someone’s loved one after death and to maintain their respect and dignity for that person, as well as any last wishes from the family.

Barbara added: “You can get some people who are hysterical almost to the point that they’re numb. Some people collapse. Others are quite relieved if their loved one was ill for a long time and they’re now at peace. There’s also guilt, especially with elderly family, if they haven’t seen them for a while.

“We like to bring the warmth into what people think is a cold place. We have seen people at their most vulnerable, in the grips of the rawest stages of grief and it’s our job to provide compassionate, useful support right at the beginning of the journey through bereavement.”

Respect and dignity still carry on after the person has been received into the care of the mortuary.”

Long gone are the days where you look at a loved one through a glass screen – unless it’s a suspicious death - we have two nice viewing rooms and will set the patient on a raised platform like they’re in a bed.

She added: “Everybody has different ways of grieving. All personal wishes from family and friends are met. This can be down to taking photographs in the viewing room or even leaving a door or a window open for the ‘spirit’ to leave.

“It can be emotionally challenging, especially when you’ve got a tragic, unexpected death. Everyone, from the bereavement officers to the pathologists, thinks of the family and what they need. There’s a lot of job satisfaction from that.”

Improving the quality of life for our patients

End of life care volunteers awarded Volunteers who support patients at the end of their lives on our Palliative Care Unit were recently awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

This is the highest award given to UK volunteer groups, being equivalent to an MBE. The ‘Care for the Dying, Volunteers Service’ provides support for patients who are receiving end of life care in the hospital, complementing the clinical care provided by the professional medical and healthcare staff.

The volunteers provide extra support and a reassuring presence for patients whose family are not able to be present or can enable families who are present to take a break from patients’ bedsides to rest, eat or take a shower knowing their loved one is not being left alone.

Michael Conway, Care for the Dying, service volunteer, said: “Some years ago we lost someone very close to us, our daughter, and when she passed away there were a lot of people around her. But I realised that at times some people pass away with nobody around them, or their families can’t be there.

That was one of the reasons why I wanted to give something back to society.

“I hope that people are getting comfort from us being there with them, I’ve had a patient say to me ‘I wasn’t too sure about

you talking to me but I’m glad you did’.”

The award was presented at an official ceremony to ‘Care for the Dying, Volunteers Service’ on 29 January 2018 by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr Mark Blundell, in the presence of The Lord Mayor of Liverpool and The Lady Mayoress.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, said: “The Care for the Dying, Volunteer Service has become an essential part of the outstanding palliative and end of life care services we provide at the Trust.

The volunteer service was first started at the Trust in 2012 as part of a research project funded by Dimbleby Cancer Care and Marie Curie, which trained the volunteers and evaluated their impact through the Palliative Care Institute, University of Liverpool.

They are a very special group of people whose innate sense of gentleness and sincerity provides a very calming and reassuring presence for patients and their families and we feel very privileged and proud to have them.”

Consultant made president elect of BPS The Trust’s own Sir Munir Pirmohamed has been named as President Elect of the British Pharmacological Society for two years after which he will become president in 2020.

The Society leads the way in the research and application of pharmacology around the world.

Sir Munir, who is also a professor for the University of Liverpool, holds the only NHS Chair in Pharmacogenetics in the UK and is director of the Medical Research Council’s Centre for Drug Safety Sciences.

His research, which spans the whole spectrum from discovery to implementation, focuses on individual variability in drug response, including anti-cancer drugs, with a view to evaluating the mechanisms and identifying strategies to personalise healthcare.

Of the award Sir Munir, who is a consultant physician at the Trust, said: “I am honoured to have been elected to this prestigious position,

and I am looking forward to playing such a significant role in promoting the BPS, its members and the field of pharmacological research around the world.

“This honour not only recognises my work, but also the efforts of the whole team at the University of Liverpool. It is also further recognition of our Department of Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, which was recently awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize.”

Jonathan Bruun, chief executive of the Society, said: “I am delighted to see Munir elected to this role. For the past six years he has served the Society as vice-president – clinical, during which time he has led the campaign to build the profile of clinical pharmacology in the NHS. Munir’s track record of leadership on this issue and the high regard in which he is held in both medicine and academia – and by health policymakers – makes him the ideal person for this important position, and to take on the presidency in two years’ time.”

Keith and Rose Fairhurst lost their son Graeme to cancer in 2009 and have since raised almost £30,000 for R Charity in his memory.

On Saturday 28 April, with Big World Treks, climb Snowdon and enjoy a glass of bubbly at the summit at sunset.

Includes return transport from the Royal, Champagne at the summit, and an R Charity T-shirt. Registration is £35 plus a minimum of £300 sponsorship.

Wirral Coastal Walk Walk four, 10 or 15 miles along Wirral’s coastline on 24 June 2018 whilst raising money for R Charity.

Graeme was aged just 30 when he died but wanted any money raised in his memory to go towards helping young adults with a serious illness to have a place they could go to while at hospital.

Talking to Keith and Rose they said: “Graeme was always a very positive person, he had crohns diagnosis from the age of 14 but got on with his life. He didn’t let his illness get in his way, he played drums in a band from the age of 16 and he loved his cars, especially Japanese sports cars. He’d even go drifting at Oulton Park.

“He had a dream of going to America so went to live there for a couple of years. He met a group of lads that loved cars too and he also got into snowboarding, he did all these things but then he’d suffer for about four or five days afterwards because he was so tired.”

It was in 2008 that Graeme was diagnosed with bowel cancer, they said: “Graeme’s main problem with being in and out of hospital was there was nowhere for him to go as a young adult, he was 29 then.

“He was a great model maker, we’d take models into the hospital but other patients started complaining about the smell. So, young adults just need somewhere they can go and do what they want to do. The first time Graeme came to the Royal he was

17 and stayed for three weeks and he was mainly with people that were older than us, his parents.

“So when he knew that he wasn’t going to make it Graeme came up with the idea to raise money for somewhere for young adults to go, so that’s what we done.

“We started raising money for R Charity when we lost Graeme in 2009. We decided to do it for the new hospital which was just in the talking stages then.”

The experience highlighted the need for a special relaxation area for young people living with a serious illness while they were in hospital. Graeme’s friends and family started the 3C’s (crohns, colitis and cancer) charity, raising thousands in fundraising activities including car boot sales, abseiling and social evenings.

Graeme’s sister Michelle said: “For my 40th birthday I asked people to make donations in his memory, Graeme should have been there for those celebrations. We set up a crowd funding page and had a raffle on the night too, people were all very generous. It was a really nice way to remember him.”

In the last nine years the Fairhurst’s family and friends have raised almost £30,000 for R Charity in Graeme’s memory.

Rose added: “There are times I lie in bed just thinking I’d give anything to just see his big happy smile and him say ‘hi mum’.

To me he was just all you could ever want out of a son.”

Fundraising

Thanks to R Supporters Thank you to our 2016/17 Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Roz Gladden, Lady Mayoress Michelle O’Dwyer and Consort Roy Gladden, in January we received a cheque for £10,000. We are so extremely grateful to the entire Lord Mayor of Liverpool Charity Committee for working so hard! The £10,000 will make a great big difference to our hospital, its patients and their families.

Alan Ingham who over the past five years has organised a Blue September Golf Day and raised a staggering £33,835. Well done Alan!

Special thanks to our local schools and choirs who came into the Royal and sang for us during our 12 Days of Christmas. Raising the spirits of staff and patients but also raising the roof with a fantastic grand total of £2,641.13.

Thank you to St Monica’s primary school, the teachers, parents and children who raised £500, they donated to R Charity instead of treating their teachers to Christmas gifts.

Well done Tony Boner, Royal volunteer, who organised a successful five-a-side football tournament and raised £107.

Well done to Thomas Meighan and Katie Pedersen who ran the Barbados half marathon on 13 December 2017 in blistering heat and raised a fantastic £585.28.

Thank you to Pink Party Organisers who raised a whopping £12,436.78 in October for Breast Cancer Services and the Mammography Suite in the new Royal.

Southport and District Flower show for choosing R Charity’s Breast Unit as their Charity of Choice for 2017 and donating an amazing £800. A special thanks to treasurer Fran Percival, Lady President Pat Armstrong and Lady Chair Sharron Roukin for nominating us.

The wonderful fundraising team One For All have been fundraising for the new Breast unit over the past two years and so far raised £11,800. They have organised Pink Parties, charity walks, afternoon teas, tombolas, raffles and sold Angel keyrings and jewellery and second hand books all to raise funds.

Their latest venture Afternoon Tea at Adelphi has raised just short of £1,900.

Traineeship inspired lab career We have now welcomed our fourth group of students on to our 13-week Traineeship Programme, so we spoke to Sam Baldwin Quirk who successfully completed her training last year and gained a position in the laboratory department.

Sam, who started her traineeship in January 2017, said: “I heard about the course through Wirral Met College and thought it would be a fantastic opportunity. Before I started I didn’t really know what to do with my life but felt I didn’t have the right frame of mind for university, so I’d finished my A-levels and was working part time.

“I had done work experience at my school as a lab technician, so when I heard there was a chance to work in a lab at a hospital I was excited for the opportunity.”

Sam underwent her traineeship with Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL), based within our Trust, although students can also apply for other areas such as a health care assistant or in administration.

She added: “My traineeship was in immunology and haematology which were both fun and extremely interesting departments to be in. I worked closely with staff members learning about the diseases and viruses that are tested for as well as doing everyday tasks.

“The traineeship helped me realise just what I wanted to do with my life and also the ways I can go about achieving it.”

“I got to make blood slides and load blood samples onto the analysers in haematology.

In immunology I loaded samples onto the machines as well as complete a urine and blood plasma fix, complete a LATEX test and assisted in various tests such as the G-ENDO test. I also got to create a new subculture of human epithelial cells.”

When asked what areas of the traineeship she enjoyed most and what challenged her, Sam said: “I learnt so much more in those weeks than I ever could do in a classroom and the hands-on learning was brilliant.

I enjoyed learning something completely different and it was exciting to see just how the laboratories work at LCL. The challenges I faced were if a test failed and finding out what went wrong and then sorting out a solution to the problem.”

After completing her traineeship Sam applied for the role of medical lab assistant at LCL and started her employment in the virology department in August 2017.

Courses offer handson experience

Sam said: “There is so much going on in virology, every day is different. I prepare samples for analysers, book tests for samples, lab maintenance such as cleaning the centrifuges as well as filing and sorting samples and making reagents up for the machines. There’s always something to do here!

We have a number of training courses taking place throughout our hospitals, including the Traineeship Programme which has been really successful.

“I love the fact there is so much to get involved with in virology and the people I work with are happy to offer help and advice but also have a laugh and enjoy work, everyone has been so nice and welcoming since I started.”

When asked if she was glad she took part in the traineeship, Sam said: “The traineeship helped me realise just what I wanted to do with my life and also the ways I can go about achieving it. I feel so grateful to everyone at the laboratories for taking us on and explaining everything even when they were extremely busy.

She added: “After seeing all the opportunities to progress and the extra training that is offered it has absolutely inspired me to pursue a career in the laboratories. In virology everyone encourages you to learn new things so if you wish to you can take on more responsibility which can help if you want to move further up the career ladder.”

Annette Pollitt, Learning and Development lead, said: “Our traineeship programme is going really well, we are now on our fourth cohort of students.

“This programme is aimed at young people aged between 16-24 who are not in fulltime employment or education. We also try to reach young people from deprived areas and ethnically diverse communities.”

The programme is 13 weeks long which includes employability workshops such as CV writing and applying for jobs.

Annette added: “The learners who have not achieved maths and English also study functional skills throughout the 13 weeks and they all have eight weeks work placement.

“In our current group of students there are eight Health Care Assistant roles, eight laboratory assistant roles and one admin placement.”

Lynn Power and Ceri Jackson pledge to have a go at process mapping!

Lois-Ann Mellor from our dermatology department in Broadgreen has pledged to raise awareness of savings we can make on dressings.

Emma from our respiratory team is pledging to raise awareness about healthy lungs.

Ian Stenton has pledged to raise awareness of Warpit which helps the Trust to redistribute and reuse furniture.

Improving the way we work Around the Trust we are continually hearing about ways that we can improve the way we work and help save money in the process, whether it’s something big or small we’re acting on those creative ideas.

It could be something as simple as using double-sided printing or changing our induction process to reduce venue hire costs, to changing a service provider to a more cost-effective company.

For example Sterile Services have saved £10,000 by changing their tracking product, plus over the last 12 months we’ve looked at ways to reduce the amount we spend on agency workers by using more efficient rosters for staff.

We have a Quality Efficiency and Productivity (QEP) programme which encourages people to think about the way that we do things and ask if could do it better and more efficiently.

Savings on medicine pots One of our pharmacists recently highlighted that it would be beneficial to use small paper cups for patients to take their medicines in tablet form instead of plastic cups.

Additionally, many of our staff took part in Fab Change Week in November last year and there were plenty of great ideas and pledges that are helping improve the way we work.

Below we’ve highlighted a couple of our Quality Efficiency and Productivity (QEP) ideas that have seen great results.

Service restructure Last year, Pallavi Hegde, consultant in diabetes and endocrine, re-organised the way her team worked to create a Trust saving of £70,000 per year.

Pallavi said: “We restructured one of our services in the Endocrine Programmed Investigation Unit. This unit is where we run our dynamic endocrine tests, which can be quite expensive and time consuming especially with in-patients, who had an average length of stay of around three to five days.

“We had long waiting hours which had a negative impact on our RRT 18-week target in out-patient services.”

The idea was researched and discussed and we now use both paper medicine cups for tablets and plastic pots for liquid medication on our wards.

Pallavi made significant changes by re-organising the tests, updating the protocols and changing some of the tests that required expensive drugs to something simple and reliable.

By making this small change it gives our hospitals a saving of £2,291 per annum.

Pallavi added: “One of the key things we did was change the test that required

in-patient admission to out-patient setting.

So, I re-wrote the protocol, I doubled up the patient information leaflet, trained and up-skilled the staff.

“After all these changes we had a very positive outcome with excellent patient feedback. Our waiting times came down from months to weeks, and financially we’ve been able to show we saved nearly 214 bed days over eight months. This amounts to a saving of nearly £70,000 per year. Plus drug cost savings add a further £30,000 a year – a total saving of nearly £100,000 a year.”

Improving the quality of life for our patients

Tribute Tower makes an impact Bristol-based artist Luke Jerram, the creator of the Tribute Tower in the new Royal hospital atrium, always wanted this commission to be remarkable, but then Luke wants to achieve that with all his work.

Luke’s latest creation, a five metre high tower made of finely routed English ash and acrylic glass is a stunning technicolour construction dedicated to recognising those people who donate their organs to save others.

Panels with poignant quotes and messages from organ donors who have passed on, reflect in the glass, through a sea of infinite colour, created by the mirrored floor and ceiling of the tower.

Luke said: “I am trying to create something that’s remarkable, and by remarkable, I mean something that people will want to take photos of, remark upon. If you create artwork that has an impact, people will value it.”

The installation is all the more astounding, because Luke lives with colour-blindness. “I suppose it just confirms that everyone’s vision is unique.

I obviously see my art slightly differently to everyone else,” he said.

Luke added: “I try to create artwork that has multiple doors of entry – so a fouryear-old will appreciate it in one way… an architect, craftsman or artist will appreciate it in another, or someone interested in light or mathematics, there should be something there for everyone.”

Luke was commissioned by the Royal after his design won a competition set up by the Trust’s joint arts development team.

The Trust was looking for something stunning and interactive to wow visitors

walking into to our new hospital and the tribute tower certainly achieves that with the 600 pieces of acrylic glass fused in different reflective colours.

The installation took five days to complete with the help of John and Richard, two master joiners who are an integral part of the artist’s team and have worked closely with Luke on previous commissions.

Luke has definite views on the benefits of great art in a hospital environment, shaped by his own near-death experience when his appendix burst.

In recovery Luke’s only view from his hospital window for a week was a dead pigeon caught in a roof net. He said: “It was a truly miserable experience and hospitals should not be like that. They should be like this [the new Royal] beautiful, airy, light-filled spaces that will help you get better… and for me to be able to contribute to this is wonderful.”

The Tribute Tower is dedicated to organ donors everywhere for the sacrifice they make, so others can have a second chance to live a full and active life. It is situated in the new Royal hospital atrium, and is just one of twenty three pieces of commissioned art which will be installed in the new Royal.

Fresh taste in new Royal The new Royal will be home to stateof-the-art medical technology and individual patient rooms but another key feature is the wonderful restaurant which gives stunning views.

Located on level 10, the staff and visitor restaurant will have views around the city, including the cathedrals, as well as the River Mersey and overlooking the Welsh hills.

Alongside the fabulous city scape it will provide a spacious dining area with seating for around 200 people, including a 60-seat tabled open-air terrace.

The restaurant will have a grab and go style retail area, a salad bar, and a large serving area for hot meals. There will also be a designated area with vending village for out-of-hours access, making it suitable for staff working shifts and wanting to grab a bite to eat.

The artist impressions of how the restaurant might look combine fresh clean lines with rustic feature walls and bold artwork, in addition to a variety of seating options to best suit your needs.

Completion of our new hospital Since Carillion went into liquidation in January 2018, we have been working closely with The Hospital Company (Liverpool) to get our new hospital finished and open.

“The Trust is doing all it can to minimise the delay. Our local politicians and others have all been hugely supportive and we will continue to liaise closely with them and the Department of Health. We all want the best for our patients and the people of Liverpool and that is to move into our world class new hospital.

The Hospital Company (Liverpool) are contracted to deliver the project and have a range of provisions to ensure our new hospital is completed.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive at the Trust said: “There are highly complex discussions taking place between various parties to get work restarted as soon as possible.

“However, this process will take some time and we expect a significant delay.

“When it is built, the new Royal will be at the heart of one of Europe’s leading health and life sciences hubs and will provide the best possible environment for cutting-edge healthcare and research.”

Trials in HIV prevention Our generic research nurse team are involved in a wide range of clinical trials, one of the latest being around HIV prevention.

Debbie Scanlon from the Research Development & Innovation (RD&I) generic team is currently working on the PrEP Impact study for Public Health England.

Debbie said: “The PrEP Impact Trial is a new prevention effort to address the estimated 4,700 yearly incidents of HIV in England.

“PrEP (HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) comes in tablet form, which, when taken as instructed can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. “The trial will assess the eligibility, uptake

and duration of drug use, in order to let us know how to support cost effective PrEP access in the future. It will also review the impact of PrEP on HIV diagnoses and sexually transmitted infections compared with historical data.”

The PrEP trial is currently recruiting participants from the AXESS Sexual Health Clinic here in the Royal. We were one of the first sites to be opened in the country largely due to the rapid turn-around by RD&I staff and partners to approve the study.

Debbie added: “The trial commenced in November 2017 and will run until November 2020. We were initially allocated 60 trial spaces but as we had recruited 54 people

by December last year, our allocation was increased to 108.

“This is an excellent achievement and we have almost achieved our revised target, due largely to the hard work and collaborative approach of Dr Mark Lawton and the staff in the AXESS Sexual Health Unit, and Graham Sweeney the Sexual Health research nurse, and myself.

“The revised target will be reviewed in April and will hopefully be expanded so more people can take part in the trial.

“The best part of this successful trial is that more than 100 people who were once at high risk of contracting HIV are now protected!”

Inspiration to our research unit Professor Robert Sutton will end his term as director of Research, Development and Innovation at the end of March 2018.

Over the past eight years in this role, Robert has made an enormous contribution to the growth and strength of research in the Trust and to achieving international recognition for our research and innovation.

Robert oversaw the establishment of two NIHR Biomedical Research Units, the NHS’ first MHRA accredited first in human clinical research facility and the Trust hosting the North West Coast Clinical Research Network.

Robert was made NIHR senior investigator in 2016 and has been instrumental in the success of the Accelerator.

The Trust and his team would like to thank Robert for all his great work and wish him well in continuing as Professor of Surgery and his leadership of a new Clinical Investigator Development Programme, along with his roles with the University of Liverpool and others to enhance the role of clinical researchers around the globe.

Early detection in diabetic eye disease Liverpool is to lead on a £1.15 million international research project to help transform early detection of diabetic eye disease in developing countries.

Researchers from St Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital are working alongside the University of Liverpool and Peking University People’s Hospital in China and aim to transform early detection of diabetic eye disease.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common causes of visual loss in the world and can be prevented if it is detected early.

Over 110 million people in China live with diabetes and this number is expected to increase to 150m by 2040, so improving early diagnosis and treatment of DR is essential.

St Paul’s Eye Unit in partnership with the University of Liverpool has been leading research into eye screening for the disease since 1991.

The research team have developed an innovative approach for the detection of DR in China which will be cost-effective to cope with the rapidly increasing numbers.

Welcome from the lead governor Welcome to the latest edition of your Membership Newsletter. This is the second edition of the combined newsletter with the Trust’s staff magazine ‘Insight’. Combining the two publications means that we are able to share more information about the Trust with members and also share our membership updates even further.

Although the Trust is not a foundation trust, it still has a shadow Council of Governors.

Whilst this body does not have statutory powers, shadow governors are in place to help local communities and staff have a say in how the Trust provides its services. The shadow Council of Governors provides an additional level of challenge and scrutiny to the Trust Board of directors and in particular the non-executive directors.

At the beginning of 2017, the shadow Council of Governors identified four areas to focus its attention on. These were patient flow, the Trust’s financial position, the new Royal and local health system reconfiguration.

The shadow Council of Governors meets on a quarterly basis and throughout 2017, updates were brought on these issues, among others, to provide evidence that the Board was taking appropriate action.

To support this process, shadow governors attend unannounced Patient Safety Walkabouts to gain a better understanding of how services are delivered at a ward level.

These walkabouts involve talking with staff and patients and hearing their views. The views of Trust members and the general public are also sought and the shadow governors have an established Membership and Engagement Committee to help organise opportunities for receiving feedback. These opportunities include attending events and online surveys.

As a member of the Trust, you are a supporter and stakeholder and play an important role in the development of hospital services both now and in the future. I would therefore encourage you to get involved and contact the Membership Office should you have any ideas. In return, we will endeavour to keep you updated of developments.

Secure clip ensures patient communication After seeing her mum, Kathleen, lose four NHS hearing aids, Barbara Lawrence decided to solve the problem and created Hear Ear securing clip – which is now successfully used in the Royal and Broadgreen.

Meet our Overseas Visitors manager Helping patients and staff understand that NHS hospital treatment is not free for everyone, Nicola Shaw is our newly appointed Overseas Visitors manager for the Trust.

Nicola has worked in the NHS for 16 years in patient-facing and financial-led roles, she said: “Part of my new role is to establish whether a person is an overseas visitor to whom charges apply, or whether they are exempt from charges.

This is a legal obligation on NHS trusts in England from the Department of Health Charging Regulations.

“When charges apply, our hospital must make and recover charges for the NHS services provided to the overseas visitor.”

These regulations are currently being rolled out throughout the hospital. All staff, including clinicians and managers, have a responsibility to ensure that the charging rules work effectively and are clear to our patients.

The success of the charging rules also depends on staff being aware, having the correct information to provide to patients and supportive of the role of the Overseas Visitors manager.

Nicola added: “The NHS is a residencybased healthcare system and eligibility for free NHS hospital care is based on the concept of ‘ordinary residence’.”

An overseas visitor is any person not ordinarily resident in the UK. A person has ordinary residence if they are living in the UK on a lawful, voluntary and properly settled basis.

Hear Ear is a simple inexpensive clip that attaches to clothing with a clear silicon tape to the hearing aid.

Barbara said: “My mum was elderly, had dementia and lived in a care home, so she was reliant on her hearing aid to identify the presence of people. Every time she lost a hearing aid we would need two appointments in the audiology department to get a replacement – when she was without a hearing aid she was totally excluded from activities and even conversations were difficult. She found it hard to follow instructions which resulted in numerous falls.

“She lost four NHS hearing aids, two while at hospital and two in care homes, so I decided to secure the fifth one and made a prototype clip in 2014. This was noticed by hospital medical staff when my mum was at an appointment and they suggested I develop it because they’re always searching for lost hearing aids.”

Barbara researched the problem and discovered over 10% of hearing aids were replacements which cost the NHS over £10million in 2016/2017.

She gained Intellectual Property for the registered design and trademark. After

obtaining approval from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Hear Ear was classified as a Class 1 Medical Device and approved by the NHS supply chain.

The clip, which is suitable for all ages, can be worn visibly or discreetly, although for elderly and vulnerable people it is beneficial to wear it on show so that carers can easily locate the hearing aid. On display it also shows people that the person has a hearing aid and communication should be directed face to face instead of from a distance.

Barbara, who lives in Wirral, added: “My mum passed away in February 2017 but when she wore a Hear Ear clip it didn’t bother her at all and she did not lose her hearing aid in over three years!”

Barbara presented the Hear Ear clip to Jenny Gilham, senior audiologist at Broadgreen, and Shaun Lever lead for dementia services and learning disabilities.

Following a successful trial in October 2017 and approval by TaMDG (Technical and Medical Devices Group) we are the first hospital to have purchased the Hear Ear unique securing clip for our patients.

Recognising the benefits for both patients and staff, Shaun Lever said: “We ran the trials on Ward 4b and no hearing aids were lost during that month. We had an extremely positive response from patients, carers and staff who felt it was a simple way to identify which patients wore hearing aids and that they would be kept safe from loss or damage if they fell out.

“Ensuring patients with hearing difficulties can communicate effectively and maintain their dignity is a priority for us. It is difficult to administer a care plan when the patient cannot hear, so they can become confused and anxious. They are also at a high risk of falls, plus communication is essential to deliver medication and services such as physio and to improve patient experience.”

World class workforce

Helping our patients on the road to recovery Whether it’s making patients smile, listening through difficult times or helping them find their way, our volunteers provide a wide range of valuable services across the Royal and Broadgreen.

We caught up with three of our volunteers, Molly Abell, Jim Daly and Gary Thomas to see why they volunteer and how they feel it helps our patients.

When asked why they started volunteering Gary said: “I thought what better way of giving something back than helping amputees, because I’ve done that journey and I know what it’s like – but more importantly I know what it’s like coming out at the end and getting your life back.

“I’ve also had a heart attack so I can talk to heart patients as well, because again I can relate to how they’re feeling. Helping people and seeing them at their worst time but then on the road to recovery, that’s so rewarding as a volunteer.”

Molly said: “I started volunteering here at the hospital because I wanted to gain experience for my future. I just love the experience of being able to help people and give something back.”

Discussing how patients feel talking to volunteers, Jim said: “I think some people, especially on the dementia ward, are really pleased to see you because sometimes they don’t have anyone to talk to or have much contact with people.

“When you stop to talk, although you might not get any immediate feedback, you see a difference in their reactions so I think people like us visiting and just trying to help them out.”

Gary added: “When I go to the wards I’ll say hello to everyone when I come in and then just start a conversation with one patient and someone else might join in, so eventually everyone on the ward is talking to each other.

“It’s about lifting them from that doom and gloom and getting them to chat the way they would normally.”

Sharing her experience Molly said: “I was with patients in A&E, and those patients are distracted and overthinking about what could happen. I can just sit down and listen, they’re happy to talk and they want someone to listen to them, especially if they don’t have any family.

“It helps to distract them for a while, to forget about what’s going on around them, and just having the chance to relax and talk to someone.”

When asked what they would say to other people wanting to volunteer, Molly said:

20 years of support Recently we congratulated our Volunteer of the Month Joyce Carter, not only has she supported the Royal for 20 years, she also turned 90 in February!

The whole of the Therapies department turned out to say a big thank you and to congratulate Joyce for her Volunteer of the Month award for October 2017.

Joyce has helped patients and visitors around our hospitals in a number of ways and is a volunteer wayfinder, showing visitors to various departments, but mostly she works helping patients in Therapies.

It was thoroughly deserved and Joyce was presented with a certificate and voucher by our chief executive Aidan Kehoe.

Patients often comment on how caring and positive Joyce is and the Therapies team are always amazed at her reliability. At 90 years old, and a recipient of an MBE, she volunteers two days a week at the Royal.

As well as cheering up patients, Joyce also helps with admin support for the Therapies team.

“It’s definitely worthwhile and it’s such a rewarding experience.”

Gary added: “Embrace the experience because it will enhance and enrich your life. It’s not just while you’re here it’s when you go home and remember a particular patient that you’ve cheered up and that puts a smile on your face, you take that smile home to your family!

“I’d recommend it to anybody, especially if you’ve got experience in a specific field or as a former patient. I share my experience with amputees and outpatients and show them that there is life afterwards, a good quality of life.”

Jim said: “There’s nothing frightening about coming to volunteer, you become part of a really nice team and go home feeling good about life in general so what can be better than that?”
