Trust consultants named in New Year Honours Congratulations to two LTHT consultants who have been named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

Dr Eileen Burns and Professor Philip Howard have been honoured for their services to patients: Eileen for her contribution to integrated care for older people and Philip for his work on the use of antibiotics.

“Eileen and Philip have both made an incredible impact in healthcare across Yorkshire and nationally and these Honours are a credit to their dedication to their professions.”

Dr Eileen Burns has been honoured with an MBE for her contribution to integrated care for older people both here in Leeds as a Consultant in Elderly Medicine and across the NHS. Eileen has been integral in launching the ‘Sit Up, Get Dressed, Keep Moving’ campaign, and in helping us provide joined-up care between hospital and

community healthcare teams to ensure high quality care for older people. She has also recently served as President of the British Geriatrics Society.

Professor Philip Howard has been honoured with an OBE for his services to healthcare, as a Consultant Pharmacist here in the Trust, and as National Project Lead in Antimicrobial Resistance for NHS Improvement.

Philip’s expertise in antimicrobial stewardship has led him to represent his profession at a national, European and global level. Philip is also visiting professor at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds and works closely with partners to improve awareness of the use of antibiotics. Philip became President of the British society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy in 2018 the first time a pharmacist has held this prestigious post.

Eileen and Philip have both made an incredible impact in healthcare across Yorkshire and nationally and these Honours are a credit to their dedication to their professions.

Welcome to the Winter issue of Bulletin!

It’s a new year, and a new decade, which for many provides an important opportunity to reflect on where we are in life and where we would like to see ourselves going next.

It can be difficult when we are busy with our day-to-day lives to put aside time to think about our health and wellbeing, as well as our career and where we want to take it. Often the two are closely related. But in this issue of Bulletin we want to focus on you – your health, your wellbeing, and your career. Features include how you can get the most out of your appraisal this year, how you can manage stress, and the benefits of stopping smoking and exercising more.

I hope you will take this as an opportunity to reflect on your own health, wellbeing, and career goals.

Perhaps you’ll decide now is the time to take some steps towards making changes in your life that are right for you.

We all have areas of our lives we’d like to see changed for the better and when we feel better, we’re more likely to do a better job and make the people we interact with feel better too – so please do consider making 2020 a year about you!

Exercise your right to a healthy life We all know the many benefits that exercise brings, but that doesn’t make it any easier to get into the habit of regular exercise. With a new year just begun, now is the perfect time to set fitness goals to make 2020 your year of healthy habits. At LTHT we have a Staff Fitness membership that can help you achieve just that. Here, Lauren Lawrance, Health and Fitness Coach, explains the benefits of regular exercise, how staying motivated has helped her progress in her career, and how you can get fit this year.

Why exercise?

“Exercise is very important to support overall physical and mental wellbeing and any exercise is of value. This can include gardening, walking, swimming, running or any exercise that raises your heart rate. Here at LTHT we have one mile walks around each site to help incorporate into your daily routine. We also promote using the stairs instead of the lift when possible.

“My main motivation to exercise is to feel fit and healthy and improve my mental wellbeing; I also want to be a good role model for our gym members. I enjoy most exercise and mainly focus on resistance training as that’s where I see the most benefits.

By taking part in exercise I am continually improving my mental wellbeing and it is a good stress release.”

Motivation is key “My favourite part of my role is instructing personal training sessions and helping our members make the small changes they need to reach their goals. I really enjoy teaching classes to members to help them increase their fitness level and help them feel motivated to continue to see positive benefits.

“I started out on a Health and Fitness Apprenticeship and would definitely recommend this route to others as it is a good way of training and learning on the job. Through support

from my manager I have been able to continue to develop my skills and knowledge which has enabled me to progress to my current role of Health and Fitness Coach.

“Now I get to share my knowledge and skills by mentoring the new apprentice each day whilst getting the opportunity to explore ways we can develop the service further. On top of that I promote the health and wellbeing agenda within the Trust and assist with stands and events throughout the year. It helps me stay motivated in my career to know we are sending this important message to our staff.”

Making healthy habits stick “As part of the Fitness membership staff have access to two gyms, classes, personal training sessions, exercise plans, healthy eating advice and fitness testing. Both gyms have a range of cardio and resistance machines available. The monthly cost is £15 (£18 for non-NHS and university staff). We run regular campaigns and challenges to encourage staff who may already be fitness members or staff who may be inactive to make small changes and promote healthy living.”

First DAISY award winners announced A bereavement midwife and an oncology ward sister were chosen in January as the first winners of an international nurse and midwife award scheme.

LTHT has partnered with The DAISY Foundation to honour the compassionate care of extraordinary nurses and midwives at hospitals in Leeds.

Tracy Campey, bereavement midwife in the antenatal department at St James’s hospital was the first winner to be announced. She was presented with her award in an emotional and moving ceremony after being nominated by the mum of a baby who was sadly stillborn.

An extract from her nomination reads: “Tracy really seemed to understand and empathise with us, and she really helped us navigate our early days of grief. She has always been there for us and I will never forget this. I would like to thank her with all our heart.”

Katie Sweeting, sister on ward J96 at Leeds Cancer Centre received nominations from two of the doctors and the matron on her ward for the excellent leadership of her team and the support she provides to patients and their families.

One of her nominations was for the care she provided to the young family of a cancer patient, going above and beyond to ensure they got to see their mum before she died.

Lisa Grant, Chief Nurse at Leeds Teaching Hospitals said: “It was a pleasure to present Tracy and Katie with their DAISY awards. We received lots of incredible nominations but these two really stood out for the difference they had made to patients and their families.

The DAISY award is a fantastic way to recognise our nurses and midwives who go the extra mile to deliver compassionate care in our hospitals.”

Her colleague wrote: “This affected us all, and I know it was heart-wrenching for Katie to be so involved with. Nurses are our rocks, they are the corner stone

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died aged 33 of ITP, an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family were

awestruck by the clinical skills, care and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this international award to say thank you to nurses and midwives everywhere.

Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation said: “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night.

Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Leeds Teaching Hospitals are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Making the most of your appraisal

Appraisal season is here and it’s your chance to put the focus on you!

April will see the start of the Trust’s sixth annual Agenda for Change appraisal season and this year we will be making some key changes to make sure appraisals are all about you. Keep an eye out for more information over the coming months.

Here, Josephine Harrison, Sister in Corporate Nursing, explains the importance of appraisals and how you can make the most out of yours.

“Appraisal is a fantastic opportunity for my colleagues and I to look at the range of development opportunities

on offer at the Trust and think about how we can access these to achieve our career aspirations.

“I try to use the run up to appraisal season to think about the personal development that I want to access to help me to grow as a practitioner and provide a better service to patients.

I think it’s really important to look outside the box, and that means not just considering classroom based courses but also different opportunities like coaching or shadowing. I also try to think about a few SMART objectives that I can bring to the appraisal meeting to make sure that I am shaping the discussion.

I want to make sure that my manager and I are on the same page regarding what’s going on in my life, this means that we can change something if we need to.

“During the appraisal itself I think it’s really important to talk about a range of topics, including work/life balance and health and wellbeing. I want to make sure that my manager and I are on the same page regarding what’s going on in my life, this means that we can change something if we need to.

This doesn’t mean it should all be done during appraisal season, my manager and I ensure we have regular catch-ups to talk about progress in my role and the achievement of my objectives as well as any other issues of importance.

“The reason I do all of this is because I

know that this is my time. The work of my colleagues and I is always busy and important, but I also know that looking after ourselves is equally critical. The appraisal, though, is a protected period of time that allows me to talk to my manager about those issues and provides an opportunity to suggest improvements to how we work. It’s my time to talk about where I am now and where I want to be in the future.

“Appraisals aren’t perfect, the success of them is dependent on the twoway involvement of both manager and appraisee. They can be seen as a box ticking exercise that has little relevance in the workplace. However my experience is that, by putting in 10 minutes of preparation beforehand and bringing things to talk about, appraisal can actually be used to make a really positive contribution to myself, my workplace and my patients.”

GR8X launches Trustwide!

GR8X – ‘the positive Datix’ – launched across LTHT in January, allowing more staff to learn from what went well and celebrate excellent practice.

The initiative aims to highlight examples of positive practice through the principle of ‘learning from excellence’ so that people who go the extra mile know that their efforts are acknowledged and appreciated - helping create a positive culture in the workplace.

In medicine there is a tendency to focus on avoidance of harm and learning from mistakes. Whilst this is important, it can sometimes mean we miss the opportunity to celebrate and learn from those occasions when we ‘get it right’.

GR8X aims to fix this by valuing the best of “what is” to feed into ideas of “what should be”.

“By helping your team member recognise what excellence looks like for her—by highlighting good practice and saying - “That!

Yes, that!”—you’re offering her the chance to gain an insight; you’re highlighting a pattern that is already there within her so that she can recognise it, anchor it, re-create it, and refine it. That is learning.”

The story so far…

GR8X was first introduced in Leeds Children’s Hospital in January 2019 thanks to the work of an enthusiastic team led by the Junior Doctor Forum, who were exploring ways to embed a wider ‘learning from excellence’ culture in children’s services.

Later that year the initiative rolled out across the rest of the CSU, with a range of nominations from team communication skills to being supported by a colleague on a bad day. Following the initial roll-out, the focus then led on to seeing how examples shared through GR8X could help inform governance and lessonlearning processes. Since then, over 300 GR8X nominations have been made for colleagues in the Children’s Hospital.

Initial feedback from staff: “It makes an enormous difference just to know that someone somewhere has noticed!”

“Clearly the little things you do and say make a bigger impact than you think!”

The initiative has now expanded to five more CSUs across the Trust Women’s Services, Oncology, Theatres and Anaesthesia, Adult Therapies, and Adult Critical Care. The expanded GR8X system is being championed by the Junior Doctor Body across the new participating CSUs but any member of staff can submit a GR8X and all are encouraged to do so!

Clinical governance teams within CSUs will highlight learning from received GR8Xs at monthly meetings to celebrate the good work!

Health and wellbeing: yo Workplace stress is an important topic but one that there is unfortunately still an element of stigma attached. LTHT is committed to eliminating workplace stress and encouraging more people to speak openly about the subject to effectively tackle stress at work in more preventative ways.

A recent report from the CIPD and Simplyhealth highlighted that the top three causes of stress-related absence are workloads, management style and relationships at work. LTHT has a range of tools and tips on the intranet to help staff to manage stress, including individual and team resilience, spotting the signs of stress and coping skills, along with the support services listed here.

Teams across a number of CSUs have worked together to improve staff wellbeing and reduce stress. These include a wellness room for theatres staff at St James’s (pictured below), a ‘Going Home Checklist’ poster, and more Pets as Therapy dogs providing animal therapy on a number of wards (pictured, right).

I nvesting in our people through Lean for Leaders Lean for Leaders is a programme run by our Kaizen Promotion Team. The programme provides formal training and certification in lean methodology for colleagues in a leadership role, enabling them to undertake improvement, otherwise known as kaizen, projects in their workplace, which is described by the methodology as the genba.

Any employees can apply to take part in Lean for Leaders training.

The course runs for a year with six day-long sessions and genba work to be completed between sessions. The six modules cover the tools of the Leeds Improvement Method in depth.

The course focuses on the power of observation to understand processes and behaviours and using innovation and creativity to develop ideas.

By the end of the session you will be able to display skills in observation and perform successful root cause analysis and value stream map creation, to develop understanding of supply and demand and creating change in your own genba.

Here, Laura Sedgley, Senior Sister Neuro Critical Care explains why she joined the Lean for Leaders programme and the benefits that she felt not only individually but across her team too.

“I took part in the training as I was keen to improve my leadership skills and also increase my knowledge and skills of the lean methodology. I think initially the biggest challenge I faced was a huge lack of confidence that I felt I was not in a senior enough role to benefit from the training, but as the training went on I realised my having a role on the front line (or genba as KPO team would say) was a positive advantage!

“I was lucky enough to do the course with my friend and colleague Emma Horne. We were keen to implement projects that would benefit the unit where we work (Neuro Critical Care at LGI). We did a great deal of work asking staff what would improve their working day (identifying the rocks in their shoes to use lean speak!) and many of

the projects we worked on came from this list. I think it was vital to involve all staff and recognise their experience and expertise and we were lucky to work with such a motivated team who were open to trying new ways of working.

“Of all the work we did for the lean for leaders course, I am most proud of our production board. We chose to develop a patient safety huddle board, where we identified patients at risk of falls, pressure ulcers, malnutrition or infection. Staff feedback was that these huddles currently did not offer much that was relevant to their shift and they did not prioritise attending. Again we sought feedback from staff about what would make these huddles more relevant to staff. We added in their recommendations, such as a review of the daily plan for each patient, which has allowed us to plan for events where staff may need more help and support from the team and the feedback from staff has been incredibly positive. This has prompted more involvement from staff within lean projects, which is great to see.

“I would encourage all staff to get involved. Before doing the training, I thought lean for leaders that was relevant only to managers. Now I can see that this training is vital to all staff in the Trust as it helps us to recognise and celebrate our teams’ excellence and help to support them in their daily work by reducing waste and things that do not add value to patients or staff.”

The nineteenth century link between Leeds and Maltese hospitals An initiative is being launched to further strengthen Trust ties with the island of Malta.

Over the last six years LTHT has developed close links with Malta through the delivery of medical physics training courses and by using scientific and technical expertise to commission complex equipment in a new Oncology wing of the Mater Dei hospital in Valetta.

At the same time, the relationship established with Malta Medical School has culminated in the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a fellowship programme for Maltese doctors. In establishing this programme, links have been discovered between Leeds Hospitals and Malta that date back to the end of the nineteenth century. This is through the eminent and pioneering surgeon Sir Berkeley Moynihan who spent most of his career at Leeds General Infirmary.

To mark this historic link between LTHT and Malta the Leeds Moynihan Surgical Fellowship was created and the first Maltese doctor - Breast Surgeon, Elaine Borg - commenced her one-year placement at LTHT in January.

The visitors were taken on a tour of the breast clinic and ward by Raj Achuthan, Consultant Breast Surgeon; before being taken around our Cancer Centre by Darren Treanor and Kate Smith, and then onto the Radiotherapy Department where they met with Hazel Rodgers and Viv Cosgrove. They also discussed future collaborative working with Suzanne Kite and Susie Gillon, Consultants in Palliative Medicine. Finally, Rob Armstrong gave an overview of the new enhanced theatre scheduling system which had been requested earlier in the visit.

The second day they visited LGI where they toured the Major Trauma Centre, starting with the helideck fire crew, meeting with many staff en-route and onto our major trauma ward to meet with Professor Peter Giannoudis,

The group then visited the Children’s Hospital aided by Mike Richards and included the CRF, ITU, and Paediatric Oncology.

At the end of the visit, Professor Paul Finan gave a presentation on the history of Sir Berkeley Moynihan (later 1st Baron of Leeds), followed by a fascinating insight into the LGI archives relating to an actual major injury patient, who was treated by Sir Berkeley, from Ronnie Walsh, Clerical Officer from A+E who also works as a volunteer archivist.

On the culmination of the visitors’ time at the Trust, Ray Galea, Postgraduate Dean from Malt, remarked upon the impressive commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism of the members of staff they met throughout their visit.

Making the season bright at LTHT Whilst nobody wants to be in hospital over Christmas, staff at LTHT always go the extra mile to make it a special time for patients who aren’t able to go home. This doesn’t go unnoticed by the Leeds community, and the Trust welcomed a number of guests to thank staff for their hard work and wish a Happy Christmas to everyone working or staying in hospital over the festive period.

Collaborative work between the stroke rehab team, estates team, and the Hope Pastures charity, saw Cloud the pony visit the LGI to see a patient called James, who is a volunteer with the charity and was missing the horses. James was blown away by the Christmas visit and it made his long stay in hospital recovering from a stroke a little brighter, while helping to support his recovery.

New Maggie’s Centre opens its doors Maggie’s Leeds centre at St James’s Hospital, Leeds is now open to anyone living with cancer, as well as their family and friends.

Hospital staff have watched it gradually come to life - from a piece of grassy wasteland next to the multi-storey car park and Bexley Wing to the beautifully designed building that it is now.

Architect Thomas Heatherwick told a pre-opening reception in November that the new Maggie’s Leeds building is one that celebrates the joy of living rather than the fear of dying. That’s what it is designed to be.

It’s also a testament to the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust estates and gardens team who worked hard with the design and construction teams to make the new Maggie’s building happen.

The centre is currently developing its programme of support which will include courses such as Managing Stress, led by a Clinical Psychologist and designed to encourage different ways of relaxation and ways to manage anxious thoughts.

The “Where Now?” programme will help people at the end of their treatment and the uncertainty that brings including returning to work.

The centre will also, in time, be linking with the expert dietetic team at the St James’s Hospital to deliver nutrition workshops as well as many other support, gentle exercise and creative groups.

The new facility has an impressive 17,000 plants, 23,000 bulbs, and 49 different species making it one of the greenest buildings ever.

Visitors can come in for a quiet moment, a chat with others around the kitchen table or group and one-to-one support with one of the professional team.

Emotional and practical support will be on hand from Cancer Support Specialists, Clinical Psychologists and a Benefits Advisor, who is able to help with money worries and application processes.

Leeds scientists to lead the way in new radiotherapy research Leeds scientists and clinicians have been given a major cash boost from Cancer Research UK to pioneer new radiotherapy technologies and techniques that could help more people in Yorkshire survive cancer.

Led by Professor David SebagMontefiore, experts from the Trust and the University of Leeds will receive £3.5 million over the next five years to fund advances in radiotherapy research, including the use of artificial intelligence with imaging technology.

Leeds was chosen as one of just seven Centres of Excellence in a UK-wide network, RadNet, to accelerate advances in radiotherapy research. Other centres include Manchester, Cambridge, Oxford, Glasgow and London.

The Leeds Cancer Centre, based at St James’s, is one of the largest radiotherapy centres in the UK treating more than 7,400 new cancer patients from across the region every year.

Radiotherapy is used in over 40% of patients cured of their cancer.

The research at the Leeds Centre of Excellence will combine the use of artificial intelligence, magnetic resonance imaging and new drugs with radiotherapy, focussing on patients with anal, rectal, prostate, liver and brain cancers.

The Trust’s charity Leeds Cares played a key role in the successful bid for funding, raising £2.4 million for a dedicated MRI

simulator, a critical piece of equipment allowing patients to have MRI scans in the radiotherapy department. It will be the first MRI simulator to be installed in Yorkshire The new funding will also pay for 13 new researcher posts and strengthen Leeds’s position as an excellent destination to train the next generation of researchers.

Professor Sebag-Montefiore said: “We are very proud that Leeds has been awarded this grant to bring the next generation of radiotherapy treatments to patients sooner, helping to save the lives of more people with

cancer in Yorkshire.”

“Using artificial intelligence analysis of the MRI scans will help us to tailor future treatment for patients reducing side effects, resulting in new, precise and personalised treatments - and improved quality of life afterwards - in the next five to ten years.

“The funding from Cancer Research UK will help accelerate our development of new and advanced radiotherapy techniques leading to the best treatment approaches for patients across a broad range of cancers.”

New radiotherapy machine delivers cutting-edge treatment A new state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine, that delivers faster and highresolution treatments to cancer patients, has been introduced in the Leeds Cancer Centre at St James’s Hospital.

The new linear accelerator (linac) allows a specific dose of radiation to be targeted directly to cancerous cells with more precision and less damage to the healthy cells surrounding them.

It will form an important part of patients’ care plans, providing the most cuttingedge treatment available.

By offering a higher definition radiation beam the new machine delivers faster treatment and an improved patient experience.

Radiotherapy is an important part of cancer treatment and, after surgery to remove the tumour, cures more people than cancer drugs.

Not all patients have conditions that mean they necessarily benefit from the higher-resolution dose of radiotherapy offered by the new machines, and the older equipment, which is due for replacement in the first half of 2020, still delivers some of the best treatment available in the country.

“This new state-of-the-art linac machine is part of a programme that constantly upgrades our radiotherapy equipment

to ensure that patients are getting the best treatment possible at all times,” said Hazel Rodger, Head of Radiotherapy at LTHT. “We’re proud here in Leeds to be able to deliver some of the best cancer radiotherapy treatment available in the world.”

The first wave of linac machines were installed in Leeds from 2008 when the facility was opened. They are part of a managed service schedule which means that a planned programme of maintenance, updates, quality assurance and replacement always maintains high standards of care.

The ten linac machines in Leeds are used on average between 8 am and 6.30 pm with each treating about 50 patients a day at the Leeds Cancer Centre. This is the highest number of machines of this type situated on a single hospital site in the country.

When a machine reaches 10 years old they are replaced as part of this planned programme.

The introduction of this latest machine at Leeds Cancer Centre means the remaining two linacs on the replacement programme reaching the 10-year milestone will be taken out of use during 2020 and new machines tested and installed.

Leeds to benefit from funding for new scanners Leeds has been chosen as one of 78 NHS trusts to benefit from multimillion pound Government funding to upgrade cancer testing and detection technology.

The Prime Minister last year pledged an extra £200 million in funding for new, state of the art cancer screening equipment across the NHS. The funding is available over the next two years to replace, refurbish and upgrade CT and MRI scanners, bringing in alternatives with lower radiation levels, and breast screening imaging and assessment equipment.

LTHT will use the funding to support the replacement of its scanners older than 10 years which include one CT machine and three MRI scanners.

This will improve patient experience leading to earlier diagnosis and potentially saving more lives. The new machines are more efficient, easier to use, scan and construct images quicker, and reduce the need to re-scan.

Yvette Oade, Deputy Chief Executive of LTHT, said they were delighted to receive the new funding. “It will allow us to upgrade our equipment and improve the already excellent care we provide for our patients. We already have a schedule for replacing our machines and the funding will help us to progress our plans and benefit patients much faster.”

Health and Social Care Secretary, Matt Hancock, said the new state-ofthe-art equipment for the 78 trusts across England will ensure doctors and clinicians can help even more people survive a cancer diagnosis and stop the disease as early as possible.

“It’s mission critical that the technology our NHS uses to prevent and diagnose cancer is brought into the twenty first century. We have backed the roll out of these new machines with £200 million in funding, as part of our Long-Term Plan, backed by an extra £33.9 billion a year.”

Each trust has been allocated funding for new machines based on an assessment of local infrastructure and local population need. They will all contribute to the NHS Long Term Plan’s goal of catching three quarters of all cancers earlier when they are easier to treat.

An exciting year ahead for Building the Leeds Way This year promises to be an exciting one for the Trust’s Building the Leeds Way programme.

In the last edition of Bulletin (Autumn 2019), it was reported that Hospitals of the Future - the Trust’s proposals for a new hospital for adults and a brand-new Leeds Children’s Hospital - had been given the green light by the Government, with the announcement that the Trust had been awarded a share of £2.7 billion new money in a first wave of funding from the Treasury.

In December 2019, more good news was announced when Leeds City Council granted the Trust Outline Planning Permission for the build.

This means 2020 begins at the outset of a five-year programme that will see the opening of the two hospitals in 2025. It’s an ambitious, but achievable timetable.

Over the course of the year, there will be a focus on activities to prepare the LGI site for the building works and ensure the Trust has everything in place to appoint the specialist designers and contractors that will be responsible for delivering the new hospital buildings.

This includes: • Holding a three-month formal public consultation on proposals to centralise maternity and neonatal services at the LGI and make changes to hospital antenatal services. This runs until 13 April 2020 and a decision on the proposals is expected in July.

• Beginning works in preparation for demolition of the Old Nurses’ Home at the LGI, which will be the site of the new hospitals. This will take place towards the end of the year.

• Developing a procurement and contracting strategy and all the necessary documents ready for a market competition to ensure we appoint the best contractors for the design and build.

The brief will consider a broad range of areas. These include the ‘whole hospital’ design and how the environment will feel and function, the specific clinical requirements of each service, planning for digital and new technologies, the future flexibility of the space, wayfinding, materials and landscaping.

In the first half of the year, a detailed Design Brief will be drawn up for the hospitals. This is a critical document that will focus on the Trust’s vision for the hospitals and what staff and patients need from it.

The Trust will be engaging with staff, patients, families and others to help shape the Design Brief, and the proposals for a design competition later in the year that will enable the Trust to select the design team for the new hospitals.

The Trust has also submitted an Outline Planning Application to build a new Pathology laboratory at St James’s University Hospital. Should Leeds City Council grant permission for the build, works to prepare the site will begin this year. The new laboratory is scheduled for completion in 2023 and will serve not just the Trust, but also hospitals in the West Yorkshire and Harrogate region.

Staff celebrated in local press health awards Congratulations to Surinder Sapal and Emma Beaglehole who both won Yorkshire Evening Post Health Awards in December 2019.

Surinder Sapal is an Advanced Practitioner Radiographer in the Breast Screening department at Seacroft Hospital, and won an Unsung Hero Award after donating a kidney to save the life of a desperately ill child – an incredible act of selflessness and thoroughly well deserved.

Emma Beaglehole is a Paediatric Physiotherapist at Leeds Children’s Hospital and won Therapist of the Year after being nominated by a young patient – this reflects the hard work and patient-centred care delivered by both Emma and the wider team.

Well done to everyone else who was shortlisted: Delivery Suite Teams and Twins and Multiple Midwife Team (Midwife/Midwife Team of the Year), Laura Smith, play leader (Therapist of the Year), Tom Hart, healthcare assistant (Carer of the Year), Debbie Hale, DIT matron (Nurse of the Year), Lauren Bond, domestic, and Pre-assessment team, Bexley Wing (Unsung hero).

Pre-dialysis team host successful patient information event In response to patient requests and to provide peer support, the Renal Pre Dialysis service recently held an event for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. These patients are heading towards end stage kidney disease where they will require renal replacement therapy.

The team’s role is to educate these patients about their options and whether they undertake hospital dialysis, home dialysis, or transplantation. This involves a wealth of information and can often prove challenging in the context of decision making. The team strive to provide a balanced viewpoint, recognising

the patient perspective as a valuable contribution to decision making, how they manage their treatment and the impact on quality of life as an individual and their family.

The day allowed pre dialysis patients to meet, chat and share experiences with those having renal replacement therapy. The event was well attended, enjoyed by all, with extremely positive feedback. The main message the team took from the day was from the dialysis and transplanted patients, who said they would have found such a day useful at the start of their journey. In response to this the team plan to hold another event in the new year.

Maternity and Neonatal public consultation A formal public consultation has been launched on proposals to centralise inpatient maternity and neonatal services in the new hospitals at Leeds General Infirmary and consider how best to provide maternity hospital outpatient appointments.

(CCG) and NHS England’s Specialised Commissioning Team and will run until Sunday 5 April. The Trust is working closely with them to support the consultation, highlighting the challenges currently faced and how the proposals will improve services for patients.

The consultation is being led by Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group

to share their views by completing a short survey or attending a public dropin event. Following the consultation, a decision on the best way forward for maternity and neonatal services in Leeds is expected in July 2020.

Leeds hospital doctors will “virtually” see you now Patients at Leeds Children’s Hospital could save themselves time and stress by having video consultations from home without the need to visit their clinics.

A new video consultation room has been created in the Children’s Outpatient Department which will allow some patients the flexibility of being seen by their consultant team online rather than attending the hospital.

A study funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in 2018 showed that about 22% of all consultations could be carried out by using video consultation technology.

The NHS Long Term plan also sets out the requirement for a 30% reduction in face to face outpatient appointments. LTHT is working hard to adapt to these new ways of working.

The Trust carried out research among its clinical staff to gauge interest in the new technology and has since held training workshops to demonstrate how it can benefit some patients.

One patient who has already benefitted from the new facility is 12-year-old Joshua Proctor from Ossett who received treatment at the hospital for a malignant tumour on his leg.

Dr Sue Picton, a paediatric oncologist, said the new facility would not be a replacement for face-to-face consultations which were still necessary in many cases.

“Video consultations are an additional service we can offer and have been particularly appreciated by my patients who attend hospital following MRI scans for brain tumour follow-up.

Ellé Oldroyd My days in community are spent providing routine antenatal care such as blood pressure checks and discussing information around preparing for birth and caring for a newborn. I also carry out home visits following birth for routine checks on both mum and baby.

The rest of my time is spent on Delivery Suite, where every day is completely different!

What else have you done in your career so far?

I started my training straight from Sixth Form so midwifery is all I’ve ever known! I qualified in October 2017 and carried out an 18 month preceptorship rotating around the different areas of the maternity unit. I also spent three months on Transitional Care gaining experience in caring for babies who are born needing additional care.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Every day is different so you never know what to expect. I also love the team I work with on Delivery Suite at St James’s; I’m still quite junior in my career and I always feel supported and never afraid to ask questions if I am unsure.

What is the one thing you would change at LTHT to help you do your job better?

Ellé Oldroyd, Midwife, St James’s and Seacroft Hospitals has worked for the Trust for 2 years Summarise the main aspects of your role?

I am part of the Continuity of Carer Team working in Seacroft and St James’s. The team launched in September and consists of myself and six other midwives who split our time between community care and Delivery Suite.

We aim to provide continuity to women living in the Seacroft area through their pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. We each have our own caseload of women for who we are the named midwife, however we then carry out group antenatal consultations to allow women to meet the other midwives on the team and other women in their area who are also expecting a baby at a similar time.

LTHT is a very busy trust so more staff would always be helpful. If Costa could be open 24 hours that would definitely make night shifts a bit easier!

New clinic at Leeds Children’s Hospital set to deliver high quality neonatal care A new clinic has launched in the Outpatient department at Leeds Children’s Hospital designed to provide improved continuity of care for babies and families who have stayed on the Neonatal Units.

This new clinic design pushes forward a key point in the national NHS Plan to modernise the neonatal service by capitalising on the long-established practice of collaboration between medical and nursing roles to bring more bespoke services to patients.

Corene Tobin, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and clinical lead, said: “The development of an ANNP-led clinic will deliver high quality, family-centred care in a cost-effective fashion and will optimise patient outcomes and the experience of their families through a streamlined treatment process.

“This service model frees up capacity in consultant-led clinics and offers an opportunity for the nurse

Teams pledge their SUPPORT Leeds Teaching Hospitals firmly believe that end of life care is everybody’s business. Kindness and compassion are part of the Trust’s core values but there are also simple, practical things that hospital staff can do to support the relatives and carers of patients approaching the end of their lives.

Small things can make a huge difference at such a difficult time and with that in mind, the SUPPORT campaign aims to raise awareness of the things that can be done to improve the visitors’ experience of end of life care. This encompasses many practical elements, from offering car parking permits, comfort care packs and open visiting to providing refreshments and explaining where to get something to eat.

The clinic is run by a team of four senior Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs), alongside six others who are either newly qualified or currently training to qualify as an ANNP. The expert team is equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver high quality neonatal clinical practice, offering a service to young patients that combines both nursing and medicine.

“The development of an ANNPled clinic will deliver high quality, family-centred care in a cost-effective fashion and will optimise the patient outcomes and experience for the families through a streamlined treatment process.”

The SUPPORT campaign was inspired by feedback from the Bereaved Cares Survey, which runs annually for a three month period. Feedback from the survey has been invaluable in providing clear insight into families’ experience of the care their loved one has received.

It is initiatives such as this that demonstrate just how pioneering the Leeds Advanced Neonatal Nurse Care Practitioner team is.”

“My brother had the best care possible, and so did I. There are no words that can possibly thank everyone enough. They were so supportive from the Consultants to the cleaners”, but the Trust doesn’t get it right every time; “We were not directly told about some of these facilities & found by chance/other people telling us”.

SUPPORT is a mnemonic with an associated icon set designed to help staff remember simple steps to take to help those identified as important to the dying person feel supported.

Jackie Hill

Bakshoo Manota joined the Trust as a Ward Housekeeper on 30 March 2009.

Jackie Hill, Personal Assistant to the Chief Nurse and Chief Operating Officer, retired in December 2019. Julian Hartley, Chief Executive, together with colleagues from Trust HQ came together to say a huge thank you to Jackie Hill for her long and dedicated service across the NHS and to wish her well for a long and happy retirement.

Bakshoo worked on several of the wards in Gledhow Wing, St James’s, before moving on to work on the Executive Team corridor at Trust HQ. Bakshoo was a much-loved member of staff. She was quiet and unassuming, her standard of work was high and she was well-regarded by the staff she met in Trust HQ.

In his speech, Julian commended Jackie’s 24 years at Leeds and noted her previous roles in the NHS in Leicester and Taunton and Somerset NHS Trust.

He reflected on the positive descriptions that had been received in her supporting references from these trusts, reporting her “enthusiasm and cheerfulness, and described as an asset to their organisation”. He was keen to point out that these qualities remained with her to her retirement.

Following her retirement, Bakshoo and her husband intend to enjoy some time travelling. Her many friends, colleagues and managers in the Trust wish her good luck and a long and happy retirement.

Christine Chew

Dawn Marshall Dawn Marshall has retired from her role as Deputy Chief Nurse/Director of Nursing (Operations) after spending the whole of her 36 year nursing career at the Trust. Dawn started out as a staff nurse in 1983 and, following a number of roles over the years, stepped in as Chief Nurse following Suzanne Hinchliffe’s retirement in early 2019. Chief Executive Julian Hartley thanked Dawn for being a fantastic ambassador for nursing in Leeds and joined her friends and colleagues in wishing her well in her next venture.

Christine Chew, Medical Secretary, has retired from her post, after a long career with the Trust. Christine joined the Trust in 1965 in the Works department. Her 54 year career within the Trust has included posts within the Estates department, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Neurology and finally the post within Neurosurgery where she has worked for Mr Paul Chumas for the past 15 years helping with his adult and paediatric practice.

Christine has always been fabulous with patients and has often been a very reassuring voice to concerned parents when they have been in need of support and guidance.

Following a collection from colleagues, Jackie was presented with a ‘pretend’ garden centre voucher (gardening being very far from the top of Jackie’s post-retirement hobbies!) in addition to more serious gift vouchers from John Lewis and White Company which went down extremely well and were gratefully received.

A fond farewell to our long-serving staff Kehinde Babalola

Mark Johnson

Kehinde Babalola has retired after working at St James’s on respiratory wards since 2004. She has been working as a respiratory nurse specialist from October 2018 in the Respiratory Day Unit.

Mark Johnson has retired from his role in the Trust as Payroll Manager after working in the NHS since 1978. Over the years Mark worked in NHS payroll in Wakefield and Pontefract before joining the team at LTHT as Payroll Manager in 1999. Mark’s additional duties have included chairing the Northern Payroll Manager special interest group for the past 20 years. He will be missed by his colleagues and friends at the Trust, who wish him a long and happy retirement.

Ann Boardman, respiratory nurse specialist, said: “Kenny has been a valued member of staff in the Day Unit over the last year, she always has a fabulous smile and cheerful demeanor, which has endeared her to patients attending the unit.”

Jampa Choedon, respiratory nurse specialist team leader, said: “I have known Kenny since 2004 whilst she was working on the wards. She has always been very positive and has got a beautiful smile. Patients seem to love her and they will miss her. She has been a valued member of the team and has always been happy to do extra work on the wards.”

Kenny said she has been very proud to work for the Trust and appreciates all the help and support from her colleagues and managers. She will be missed by all her friends and colleagues who wish her all the best for a long and happy retirement.

Lesley Barr Lesley Barr retired in December 2019 after a 41-year career with the Trust that began as a band 2 clerical officer and ended as the Senior Health Records Manager. Lesley was presented with gifts, flowers and cards from her friends and colleagues, and the library team organised a celebration banquet attended by old and new staff alike.

In her early career Les managed the old reception desk situated at the top of the stairs in Chancellor’s Wing on a large platform housing an industrial sized manual card veer index system that staff used to make future appointments and to check patients’ details.

Les left outpatients and spent some time in coding, returning as an outpatients manager before continuing as a Band 5 in Medical Records before then being promoted to a Band 7 as the Trust Health Records Manager. During her time in Medical Records she did project work with orthopaedics, ophthalmology and set up the Central Locate Team at St. James’s.

Sue Gamble Sue Gamble started work for the Trust as a temp in January 2000 and became a permanent member of staff a year later. She has always worked as secretary for the Paediatric Urology Department, originally with Professor David Thomas at St James’s, then later at the LGI. A loyal, highly respected and warm personality, the urologists would frequently feedback parents’ regards to Sue, whom they had never met, to thank her for her kindness.

An avid aviation enthusiast, Sue has long enjoyed visiting air shows, particularly where her beloved Lancaster bomber would appear. As Sue retires after 20 years’ service, her friends and colleagues wish her health and happiness.

In her time Les has seen many changes within the library, and many staff come and go. She will be missed not only for her bright coloured office but by colleagues and friends around the Trust. People know that if they want help with something she will do her best to oblige. She is and will always be a special person in everyone’s heart.

Charity album raises funds for Leeds cancer patients Tabby Kerwin produced an 18 track CD in memory of her husband Simon, who passed away from cancer in 2018 with all proceeds going to Leeds Cares in aid of Jacqui’s Million appeal to benefit patients at Leeds Cancer Centre. Tabby also generously donated nine personal CD players and copies of the CD for patients receiving chemotherapy.

Thank you once again to Richard Maltby and his family and friends, who organised another annual golf charity event at Wetherby Golf Club along with further fundraising. This raised £6,000 for research work led by Professor Giles Toogood and Professor David Sebag-Montefiore.

Early Bird Ball raises thousands for the Neonatal Units at Leeds Children’s Hospital

In total, Richard has raised over £133,000 in the last 17 years, after his experience of bowel and liver cancer motivated him to fundraise for research. He has been clear of the disease for 15 years and this charity fundraising has been of key importance in helping to develop new treatment approaches using radiotherapy for bowel cancer. Leeds parents, Gemma and Joseph Skelley’s sell-out ‘Early Bird Ball’ raised over £10,000 for the Neonatal Unit at St James’s Hospital where their son Joshua was cared for. After the success of this year’s ‘Early Bird Ball’, the Skelley family have vowed to continue fundraising for Leeds Cares and will do whatever they can to support staff, babies and parents on the Neonatal Unit.

Belmont Grosvenor School raise £5,000 for Leeds Children’s Hospital Pupils, parents and staff from Belmont Grosvenor School have raised an amazing £5,000 for Leeds Cares in aid of Leeds Children’s Hospital, after one of the school’s young pupils received life-saving treatment as a baby. The school organised dozens of fundraising events throughout the year, including a colour run, Easter Egg hunt and pyjama day.

Staff Lottery

What we did in 2019 It was a huge year for the Staff Lottery in 2019, with big prize money and successful funding grants given to staff across the Trust over the past twelve months.

Just over £37,000 has been granted to staff members in 2019, providing staff with amenities to enhance their workspace including kettles, fridges, and microwaves. The Lottery fund has also helped with larger grants, and over the past year has helped transform staff rest rooms in Clarendon Theatres and the Antenatal clinic.

Don’t forget, you need to have joined the Staff Lottery no later than the 7th of the month before the draw to be included.

What do you do to wind down and relax after a hard week at work?

Having young children, there is never much time to wind down after work or relax. However when I do get the opportunity I enjoy a good quality ale and a film/tv series.

What is your ideal holiday destination and why?

Canada. I prefer to go on holidays when the weather is cold. Canada has some amazing terrain and natural landscapes that would be great to see in the winter months. Great for skiing and/or snowboarding or just sitting with a hot chocolate.

What is your favourite food?

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Weirdly I wanted to be an accountant as a young child. I had a fascination with numbers and particularly spreadsheets and statistical correlations.

What is your favourite film?

Die Hard. Absolutely timeless film.

Tell us something we don’t know about you…

There isn’t very much the people closest to me don’t know. If I had to choose something it would be that I don’t like cheese. Not one bit.

As the guys at work know I love a Sunday roast. You can’t beat it, it’s even better when I have it made for me (thanks Mum).
