LTHT is ‘Good’ and getting better!

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Leeds Teaching Hospitals as ‘Good’ in its latest inspection.

possible rating at both LGI and St James’s. The Leeds Dental Institute was also rated outstanding.

The report, based on a visit during August 2018, found the Trust had successfully addressed many issues which required improvement when the CQC last visited our hospitals nearly three years ago.

For the first time, LTHT received ratings for the Use of Resources which was carried out by NHS Improvement, which received an ‘Outstanding’ rating - the highest possible score for this. The Use of Resources rating shows that hospital teams are using resources effectively to provide high quality, efficient and sustainable care for their patients.

Dr Yvette Oade, Acting Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted that the overall rating for the Trust remains ‘Good’ and it is clear that we are also getting better, with higher ratings in more areas than our last inspection in 2016.”

LTHT also received three ‘Outstanding’ ratings. One of the Trust’s core services, Critical Care, was given the highest

One of the best things about working here in Leeds is the great sense of shared vision and collaborative working - what we call The Leeds Way. Through this all our people bring the very best care to our patients whilst creating a work culture we can all be proud of.

Part of this is making sure we look out for one another and that the right support is available to help people get back on their feet when they need it. It’s also about celebrating the diversity of our 18,000 staff and recognising that while everyone is different, we all need to make time to look after ourselves.

Well done to Robyn Tipple-Smith, a senior care support worker in Dermatology Outpatients at Chapel Allerton Hospital who has donated 13 inches of hair to the Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults up to the age of 24, who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Robyn said: “I’ve been growing my hair since I was a teenager to donate to a charity. It has taken years to get it

Yoga for the mind and body In our Emergency Department, Head Yogi Dr Rachel Brooke takes a weekly yoga class with colleagues, which offers not only a physical exercise but time for reflection and relaxation. Rachel is a fully qualified yoga instructor and, knowing full well the benefits yoga brings to physical and mental wellbeing, decided to set up her own class for her colleagues.

The classes have been going for eight months, and are timed to coincide between shifts, so that members of the team who are finishing their day shift, or are just arriving for their night shift can exercise together.

Rachel’s colleagues have found the classes really beneficial, saying how they are great for relieving stress after a busy day, improving strength and balance, whilst learning new techniques they can practice at home.

Big Cats Club We know what you’re thinking… what exactly is the first rule of the Big Cats Club? Well, according to some of its members it’s to lose the most post-Christmas pounds in six weeks! The Club was the idea of Midwife Nicole Akie and is made up of 64 members of staff from Women’s CSU, including midwives, doctors and maternity support workers, all competing to win the Six Week Challenge with competitors vying to lose the biggest percentage of their body weight and bag themselves a cash prize in the process!

Each competitor paid an entrance fee of £10 with the

money being split between the winner’s pot and a donation total of £320 to the Delivery Suite Fund, with a view to improve services for the women and babies they care for and the staff who do such an amazing job in caring for them. Ward Clerk Saedia Raja reigned supreme in the challenge losing an amazing 22%!

During the six weeks the Big Cats were all more encouraged to make healthier choices and, in addition to losing weight, most people reported feeling better in themselves as well. The challenge was such a success the Cats will be back for another challenge in May

It’s not just good, it’s GR8X!

You’ve Been Mugged!

Junior doctors across our children’s services are also getting in on the wellbeing action by introducing GR8X, a tool which enables teams to recognise individuals that have made a positive contribution to their working life. The recognition scheme promotes learning from success and makes junior doctors feel more a part of the team they are working within, albeit for a just a few months depending on their clinical rotations.

Several muggings have taken place across LTHT recently - but it’s all in the name of staff recognition!

Over 70 GR8Xs were submitted in the first two months and showed the lengths that teams and individuals would go to in order to support one another at work. Everyone is invited to participate and share their ‘feel good moment’ with examples including witnessing fantastic team communication skills to being supported by a colleague when they were having a bad day. The initiative has been a resounding success and is rolling out across the whole children’s hospital!

A #YouveBeenMugged campaign has popped up in a number of CSUs, where staff who have gone the extra mile or made someone’s day are being surprised with a mug full of goodies!

The idea is to fill a mug full of treats and attach a note thanking the recipient for doing an amazing job.

The recipient can then refill the mug and pass it on to someone else.

Laura Jones, Kath Harper, and Carla Gibson in the twins and multiple births team, were the first recipients of a special ‘one in a melon’ mug in the Women’s CSU recently. The person who made the nomination said it was because of Laura, Kath and Carla’s unwavering commitment to doing their best for patients and taking on new elements to their job roles without hesitation.

Other CSUs getting in on the act include Estates and Facilities who have been responsible for several ‘muggings’ recently and have even included flowers alongside treats within their mugs.

It’s been emulsional Midwives Jo Anker, Jill Topley, Clare Woodward, Stacey Jackson and Laura Fordham along with maternity support worker Margaret Bingham bonded over a renovation project recently after they decided to join forces and give the staff room on J03 a much-needed makeover!

After raising funds through a ward raffle and tombola along with donations from company Muraspec, the team set about

planning to create a haven for their hard working colleagues, a place for them to take a well-earned break and de-stress.

Armed with a few brushes and rollers, the team got stuck in and completed the project in their spare time, doing a fantastic job of sprucing the place up!

New furniture completed the fit-out and staff have already been making use of the new space.

Get the help you need with EAP In today’s world it is almost impossible to separate out our private and work lives with much of what we worry about at home tipping into the day job and vice versa.

The single biggest mistake that most of us will make at some point is trying not to let our worries show; we end up even more stressed as a result of ‘putting on a brave face’ and juggling our feelings and emotions.

This is where the Employee Assistance Programme can help. The service is free to anyone working at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and provides access to immediate support from a trained counsellor 24/7. The EAP is run by an independent company, Care First, and is confidential. You can even talk to them anonymously if you like.

One-to-one telephone counselling sessions can also be arranged to make sure you have the support you need when you need it. So, if you have money worries, legal issues or need family or personal advice then the service can help with free and confidential advice.

Alison’s Story Alison was at work when a colleague noticed she wasn’t her usual self and took the time to have a chat about what was troubling her.

As it turned out, Alison was really struggling. She was trying to undertake a Master’s degree and work full-time whilst worrying about her dad who was very ill. She felt that all she wanted to do was close her door and pull the duvet over her head.

After taking her colleague’s advice, Alison phoned the Employee Assistance Programme run by Care First and spoke to a counsellor who supported her to talk about her worries. She felt guilty that she wasn’t visiting her dad enough and felt she was failing at everything. She hadn’t

wanted to ask for help as she thought that was another sign of failure.

After talking through her concerns, Alison was given some advice on coping mechanisms during what was a very difficult time. With the EAP’s support she was able to make decisions that would bring a bit of order to her life. She agreed with her university to take a break from her studies, made a flexible working agreement with her manager and spoke to her GP for advice and support.

Asked what she thought of the EAP service, Alison said “Speaking to an external person who was nonjudgemental and being reassured that the conversation was confidential helped me speak openly and put things into perspective. We agreed that I didn’t need to access counselling but I was reassured that I could contact the service any time”.

Thank you to Alison for sharing her story with Bulletin, we’re sure it will help many others like her to access the EAP and get the support and advice they need.

A friend to turn to Listening Ears in A&E Every year, over 220,000 people attend LTHT’s Emergency Departments (ED).

For the 450 members of staff working in the ED, there is no telling just what will come through those doors each day.

Not only do they work under the most intense pressures, they care for families just as their lives might change forever.

John Williams, Charge Nurse in ED, said: “In September 2017, a Sister in A&E - a friend, a colleague and a member of our A&E family - took her own life. This devastating loss shook our A&E departments and will continue to do so for some considerable time to come. From something so terrible came something so positive. The A&E Listening Ears.”

A&E Listening Ears is an anonymous peer-to-peer listening service to help ED staff shoulder and reconcile the things they see while caring for their patients and their families. There are now over thirty members of the ED team, including porters, Clinical Support Workers, Allied Health Professionals, pharmacists, nurses, doctors and Clinical Site Managers, that volunteer to staff the telephone service around the clock every day of the year.

Working with colleagues in Clinical Psychology, volunteers listen, empathise and signpost services for immediate and ongoing support. The telephone service is further supported by a dedicated email address and volunteers wear special ear-shaped pin badges so that colleagues can identify a ‘listening ear’ if they need more immediate support at work.

A&E Listening Ears was recognised as an area of ‘Outstanding’ practice in LTHT’s latest CQC inspection and was highly commended at the national Nursing Times awards. The project also won the Staff Engagement category at last year’s Time To Shine awards.

It’s now spreading - with the project rolling out in Emergency and Specialty Medicine and also to other CSUs across the Trust.

Dr Jonathan Thornley, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, said: “I am so very proud of my A&E family - we always pull together when times are toughest. The A&E Listening Ears brings a light at the end of the tunnel to some, a shoulder to others, but an understanding voice to all, whoever, whenever, whatever- this is something very special.”

Have you heard about the BME Staff Network?

The Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) Staff Network supports the Trust in closing the gap that currently exists between BME staff and non-BME staff experiences.

To support and drive this agenda forward the BME Staff Network need your help and are calling on all CSUs and front line managers to familiarise themselves with the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) and to take whatever action they can locally to help LTHT be the best place to work for all staff regardless of background.

The WRES was introduced in April 2015 to help ensure employees from BME backgrounds have equal access to career opportunities and receive fair treatment in the workplace.

The BME Staff Network is open to all LTHT staff and non-BME counterparts are especially welcomed. The Network believes that to make the necessary improvements around race equality, all voices need to be heard to collaboratively progress forward.

The BME Staff Network Core group meets every month on the first Tuesday of each month from 4 - 5.30pm in Room 50 on level 7, Bexley Wing.

The wider network meets every quarter. The next meetings are on Tuesday 7 May 2019 at LGI Old Medical School, Meeting Room 035 from 11:00-13:00; and Friday 13 September 2019, 15:00-17:00 in Seminar Room 3, Gledhow Wing at St James’s.

Leeds Children’s Hospital leading national transition work For young people with long term conditions, the transfer from children’s to adult services is a critical time in their lives and the transition can shape a young person’s on-going health and well-being.

In 2015 a team from Leeds Children’s Hospital were awarded funding from the Burdett Trust for Nursing and were able to implement a three year project, working with all 42 of its services that required transition pathways.

In 2018, the Trust was awarded a further £1.3m to continue this work on a national scale. The grant, the biggest ever awarded by the Burdett Trust, will see Leeds Children’s Hospital work collaboratively with NHS Improvement to set up and work with regional teams across the country to highlight their Model of Care for Transition for young people, which other organisations can adapt to meet the needs of their own organisations.

Dr Yvette Oade, Acting Chief Executive commented: “I’m extremely proud to see the team from Leeds Children’s Hospital leading on a national project, and one that is so important for young people across the whole of the UK. The fantastic work that they have already completed stands them in good stead to continue this vital work.

It will see a specialist team working together to ensure that the transition for young people is one that works for them and encourages them to take control of their health and be more involved in key decision making.”

Porter organises 86 mile sponsored walk in memory of his late wife Chris Hewitt, a porter at St James’s Hospital, successfully walked 86 miles from St James’s Hospital to Filey to raise money and awareness for Yorkshire Cancer Research in memory of his late wife Gill.

Joined by some of his colleagues, the walk took place over a period of five days, and finished in Filey on the 16th anniversary of his wife’s death. Chris’

Along the route, Chris stopped off at York Hospital to share the great success of our Porters Huddles with the team there. The huddles mean that porters are working better together and with other teams across the Trust, and they’ve also seen a huge reduction in the number of times they have to go back to wards to collect medications, notes or patient’s belongings.

Chris said: “I was going to do this myself and mentioned it to a couple of doctors at work who offered to walk with me, I then mentioned it to my management team at one of our huddles, their offers of help and support in organising it with me have left me so pleased and indeed very humbled. I am very grateful for all donations I’ve received which will go towards helping to find a cure for this terrible disease that doesn’t discriminate and touches everybody’s lives.”

Junior Doctors ‘OPT IN’ to help grow sustainable healthcare around the world Junior Doctors Aoife Hurley, Adam Jones, and Nguavese Onoviran have all received OPT IN travel bursaries to provide education and training in low-resource countries around the world.

OPT IN (Overseas Partnering and Training Initiative) is a Trust-based charity co-directed

by Dr Helen Ford, Consultant Neurologist, which aims to facilitate educational and research visits to developing countries all over the world. Previous projects have taken place in Guyana, Bangladesh, and Madagascar, amongst others.

The bursaries amount to £1000 each, and were open to any member of staff at LTHT to apply for.

Aoife Hurley from Leeds Children’s Hospital will be heading to Zambia for six months to help with a project around neonatal resuscitation; Nguavese Onoviran, also from Leeds Children’s Hospital, will be travelling to Nigeria in July to help children with neurological disabilities; and Adam Jones from Leeds Dental Hospital will be heading to Tanzania in June to help with emergency dental care with rural health workers.

100th Nurse Led TAVI patient On 12 February our Nurse Led TAVI service reached its 100th patient. This service was started one year ago to improve the increasing number of patients on the waiting list. This service has allowed us to complete four nurse led TAVI cases every Tuesday since its implementation.

Having a Nurse led service has allowed the skills of Anaesthetists to be used in Cardiac Theatres and ICU cover. The patients have provided positive feedback in regards to the care given to them prior to and during the procedure.

The service was set up by Dr Mike Cross and Catheter Lab Sister Christine Gill two years ago beginning with a pilot period and now the successful year which has allowed the team to reach its 100th patient. In that year the team has expanded and Catheter Lab Specialist Nurse Lydia Belle and Anaesthetic Nurse Practitioner Rebecca North have joined to help reach the goal of our service and have allowed us to build a patient centred high level of care.

The female medics leading the next generation of Leeds doctors In March the Trust celebrated International Women’s Day by shining a spotlight on the female medics who are leading the next generation of doctors at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

Leeds has a rich history of supporting women in medicine. As far back as 1877, the city played host to Mary Edith Pechey-Phipson MD, one of only seven women at the time to successfully be registered as a doctor in the UK. Described as “the ablest of those pioneering women who broke through the barriers”, Mary fought for the right for women to train as physicians and her courage and determination undoubtedly paved the way for future generations.

In the 1960s, Dr Olive Scott became the UK’s first paediatric cardiologist right here in Leeds at the former Killingbeck Hospital. She developed the care of the newborn, infant and child with congenital heart disease, her work and research having worldwide impact. Even in the 1960s it was still uncommon for women to become consultants, much less the most eminent in their clinical field of practice.

Fast forward to 2019, and women now represent 46% of the medical workforce at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. However, as with many professions, an equality challenge still remains with comparably more men than women holding senior consultant posts and clinical leadership roles, and working in certain specialty areas.

Here in Leeds, two aspiring female consultants are leading a 1000-strong workforce of doctors in training (aka Junior Doctors) through the role of Chief Registrar. Junior Doctors make up nearly half of all doctors employed by the Trust, providing a vital service to those in need, with 55% being women (compared to 46% of all LTHT doctors).

Dr Alison Tyas recently took up the role of Chief Registrar for Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Alison is a Respiratory Registrar and was drawn to the Chief Registrar role because, she says, “I wanted to use my abilities in science in a way that would help people and involve interaction with lots of different people. I also felt it would be good to have a clear goal of what I was going to do after university.”

to be the first dedicated paediatric chief registrar post in the country. Alix explains that the role was introduced as a result of suggestions from the Junior Doctors themselves. She explains, “I do a lot of signposting - being a bridge between Junior Doctors and the hospital management team gives me a privileged position where I can direct trainees who want to set up new projects and initiatives.

There are so many great things going on at Leeds Children’s Hospital so it’s been great to be part of making sure these ideas are supported and moved forward.”

The chief registrar posts seek to encourage doctors in training to develop leadership skills at an earlier stage and to support their peers and to drive forward traineeled projects and initiatives to improve patient care. They also act as a listening ear and engage with Junior Doctors to understand and raise the challenges they are facing, gathering support for change and working with the organisation to support health and wellbeing for this group of staff.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Yvette Oade, herself a leading clinician, says: “It is an investment not only in the individuals in these roles but in the future of patient care; we know that an engaged workforce leads directly to better patient care so by working with Junior Doctors through the chief registrar roles we can ensure we are delivering the best patient care.”

A career in medicine is one of the most rewarding and there are many

opportunities for girls and women aspiring to enter the profession. For Alix a career in medicine was something she didn’t even think was possible and she says was “a bit of a shock” when she was accepted to study medicine at King’s College in London. She explains, “I struggled academically at school with dyslexia. Teachers told me I wouldn’t get into medical school and I didn’t think I would either. My mum said I should apply anyway, as I could achieve anything I put my mind to. I’m so glad she did!”

And for those just starting out, Alison has this advice: “You have to have confidence in yourself. Give yourself plenty of time to think through your decision and don’t be afraid to pursue other things that interest you.”

Dr Oade continues: “Driving equality in our senior clinical workforce is vitally important to ensuring that we can deliver the best care for our patients. It’s not just about gender equality - although this is hugely important - it’s about actively encouraging and inspiring people from all backgrounds, cultures and walks of life to aspire to become our clinical leaders of the future. I think we are very lucky in Leeds to have such a wonderfully diverse NHS workforce all working to the ultimate goal of delivering the best patient care.

“I am very proud of Alix and Alison for taking on these leadership roles and supporting and inspiring their peers to make such valuable contributions to our organisation and the NHS.”

Sovereign Health Care makes largest ever donation to LTHT Sovereign Health Care, West Yorkshirebased cash plan provider, made a generous donation of £10,000 to the Trust in December.

Sovereign Health Care, which celebrated its 145th birthday last year, is one of the UK’s longest established health care cash plan providers. This is the largest annual donation made by the company to date, which was made in celebration of the 70th birthday of the NHS. Linda Pollard, Trust Chair, met with the Chair of Sovereign Health Care, Russ Piper, to formally receive the donation at St James’s.

Sovereign Health Care has no shareholders, so any surplus they make is available to reinvest into the business or donate to good causes, particularly those that help improve health and wellbeing and encourage people to live healthy lifestyles, such as the NHS. This donation will help the Trust to further fund the work around supporting the education of trainees, and joins previous donations in the past which have gone towards the learning experiences of students, apprentices and other trainees.

LTHT scoops wins at annual HFMA Awards The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Awards in December saw LTHT walk away with several wins.

The prestigious annual awards celebrate excellence in financial departments across the NHS. The winners were announced at a special ceremony held in London: • LTHT Finance team - winner of Finance Team of the Year Award.

• David Berridge, winner of Working with Finance – Clinician of the Year Award, and Phil Wood, who was runner up.

• Mark Songhurst - winner of FutureFocused Finance Award.

The winners were chosen to receive their accolades from a strong field across the UK. The awards judge organisations, teams and individual finance professionals by looking at elements including fiscal success, governance, people management, communications, ethics, sustainability and learning.

New appointments to LTHT Executive team and Trust Board LTHT is pleased to welcome new appointments to the Executive team and to the Board of NonExecutive Directors.

Lisa Grant joined the Executive team as Chief Nurse in April and has over 20 years’ experience within the NHS. Lisa was Chief Nurse/Chief Operating Officer at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. Lisa’s past achievements includes the introduction of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen (RLB) Nurse Programme that was endorsed by NICE in 2016.

Professor Tricia Storey-Hart joined the Trust Board as Non-Executive Director, also in April. Prof Hart has more than 40 years of NHS experience and has previously worked as a nurse, midwife, community nurse and health visitor and most recently as Chief Executive of South Tees Hospital, before retiring in 2016. Prof Hart brings extensive experience in strategic and operational leadership and management to her position on the Board.

Toy brick sets help ease children’s anxiety when undergoing cancer therapy Children undergoing cancer therapy at Leeds Children’s Hospital are being given toy models of the linear acceleration machine (linac for short) used in their treatment to help ease their anxiety.

The ‘Little Linacs’ help normalise the experience in a way that is creative and fun by allowing children to see and understand what the machine looks like and how it moves around them during their treatment. This complements the dedicated work of the team in Children’s and Teenage Radiotherapy who go out of their way to deliver an experience that puts their young patients first.

The Little Linac project was the brainchild of Professor David Brettle, who is Head of Medical Physics and Engineering at the Trust. He said: “Toy bricks are every child’s favourite toy and are an ideal way to educate young patients about their

treatment in a way that is designed to reduce their stress and anxiety.”

He added: “After their treatment is over, my challenge to the children is to use the bricks to make something very different: a rocket, a rabbit, a robot, as part of their transition back to a more normal life.”

The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), who funded the toys, wants to give every child in the UK undergoing radiotherapy treatment for cancer a free kit to help them during their treatment.

Anyone can buy their own brick set by placing an order with IPEM via their website. Every Little Linac model sold will enable IPEM to donate two more kits to children undergoing radiotherapy treatment for cancer.

Royal Visit to Leeds Children’s Hospital as new Theatre Suite Opens The Trust was delighted to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex to officially open the brand new Children’s MRI and Cardiac Hybrid Suite at Leeds Children’s Hospital in March.

Funded by Leeds Cares and Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, the new development has created a dedicated environment at the hospital for children’s cardiac surgery and children’s neurosurgery, supporting the internationally recognised work of these expert teams.

Dr Yvette Oade, Acting Chief Executive at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We were delighted to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex to Leeds Children’s Hospital. The new facility will transform how we care for our children and ensure we can continue to provide the highest possible level of care for children from across Leeds, Yorkshire and beyond.

“I would like to thank our charity partners, Leeds Cares and Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, for their commitment to fundraising for this new development which means so much to our staff and patients.”

The new theatre complex will improve

the care provided to young patients with complex congenital heart disease, and those undergoing neurosurgery.

The cardiac hybrid theatre allows cardiac surgeons and cardiologists to perform surgery at the same time which means the skills of both specialists can be employed together, reducing treatment time for patients.

The intra-operative MRI scanner allows scans to be done during neurological

surgical procedures. For example, surgeons will be able to see straight away how much of a brain tumour has been removed rather than scanning at a later date to discover that additional procedures may be required. As a result, patients need fewer general anaesthetics, MRI scans and surgical procedures.

The new development has been supported by generous donations from Leeds Cares and Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s ‘Keeping The Beat’ campaign.

New bereavement suite set to improve maternity care at Leeds General Infirmary Parents who suffer the trauma of losing their babies in childbirth will be offered greater comfort thanks to new facilities in the city’s maternity department.

A new bereavement suite at the LGI is set to be opened after staff on the unit spearheaded a project to completely refurbish the rooms, which had become drab and outdated.

Last year more than 100 families used the bereavement rooms at the LGI, and a similar number used the facilities at St James’ Hospital, after losing their babies to stillbirth and other complications.

Thanks to the makeover the newly refurbished bereavement suite at the LGI has two identical rooms in soft green colours, designed to create a relaxed and non-clinical environment.

Plans are now in place to undertake a similar project at St James’s.

Becky Musgrave, deputy head of midwifery at the trust, said: “In these rooms there is a lot of tragedy, and we can’t change that. But we wanted to make that experience as good as it can be and in a nicer environment.

Previously it was very dated.

“I think it’s a really nice and calming environment. They can sit and have

meals with their families. “We have been working closely with our service users and we have patients on our bereavement steering group.”

Families are offered privacy in the bereavement suite as they come to terms with losing their babies in tragic circumstances. Matron Vicky Brooksbank said: “The rooms can be

accessed by a different entrance so bereaved families don’t have to walk through the ward.

“We care for women with all gestation periods who have unfortunately lost their babies. “We aim to care for them all the time in this area and if they need medical input, the main unit is next door.”

Operation Ouch comes to Leeds We’re excited to announce that Leeds Children’s Hospital has been chosen as a location for the eighth series of Operation Ouch!

Operation Ouch is an educational British children’s television series on the human body, showing what happens in an A&E Department, what doctors sometimes have problems with and the show also conducts various experiments.

The show is hosted by twin brothers and doctors Dr Chris and Dr Xand van Tulleken and this year a new doctor, Dr Ronx was introduced. A CBBC programme, filming started in March and the crew will be predominantly based in Paediatric ED and in the Children’s Hospital following some patients from their time in ED through to other areas of the hospital.

Heart attack care “excellent around the clock” Admission to hospital with a heart attack outside normal working hours does not appear to increase a patient’s chance of dying in hospital, according to a study of more than 600,000 patient cases.

The research suggests that fears about potential differences in outcomes depending on the time of hospital admission may be unfounded.

Led by the University of Leeds, the study found no evidence for an association between time of hospitalisation and inhospital mortality for patients admitted with a heart attack.

Andrew Mason was admitted to Leeds General Infirmary after having a heart attack out of hours in October 2018.

His experience reflected the round the clock care shown in the research from the University of Leeds.

LTHT welcomes VIP visitors Over recent months we have seen a number of VIP visits at the Trust where there have been fantastic opportunities to showcase the brilliant work of staff teams and innovations in patient services.

In February the Head of the Civil Service Sir Mark Sedwill made a special visit to St James’s to find out more about the Trust’s apprenticeship programmes and take a tour of the Digital Ward.

Sir Mark was keen to understand how LTHT became the top employer of apprentices in the NHS, the opportunities and challenges faced by people undertaking an apprenticeship and what he could do at a national level to drive the apprenticeship agenda. Sir Mark hosted a round table discussion with a number of apprentices and colleagues from HR where these and other issues were raised.

The second part of Sir Mark’s tour was to visit the Digital Ward on J23 to find out more about the Trust’s work to fully digitise clinical areas. He received a demonstration of LTHT’s Scan4Safety initiative and an introduction to key digital systems including PPM+ and the Leeds Care Record.

1,500 Leeds students gather to celebrate hero Hoshi Over 1500 students and staff members from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) joined together to remember Hoshi Naylor, their former classmate and pupil, and to show their support for organ donation.

12-year-old Hoshi died in a road accident in January 2018 and donated five organs to four people in need of a transplant.

Since a young age, Hoshi had shown her support and advocacy for organ donation and had made her final wishes known to her parents.

The school congregated to capture the words ‘Be A Hero’ to show their support of the campaign led by LTHT, which raises awareness of organ donation and encourages people to sign the Organ Donor Register.

Hoshi’s parents Emma Settle and Lloyd Naylor knew they wanted to donate her organs having always encouraged open conversation on the subject.

Emma commented: “Our advice to everyone is to have a talk with your family when your children are young, as having that difficult conversation while you have the chance can help to do a lot of good.

“Our daughter has potentially saved or improved four lives, but ultimately her actions affect hundreds – the families, friends, schools and communities. When it comes to organ donation, there is a much bigger picture, which Hoshi helped

us to see.

“We have always been proud of her, and now knowing that she has done this, she has left her legacy in medicine, which was what she would have wanted.”

Over the past year in Leeds alone, 39 people donated 120 organs after death, compared to 28 people donating

92 organs in 2016/17. In 2017/18, 108 patients received a life changing transplant, an increase from 81 in 2016/17.

Across Yorkshire and the Humber this has also increased, with 300 organs donated after death in 2016/17 and 447 in 2017/18. 318 Yorkshire residents received a life changing transplant in 2017/18.

Big thumbs up for Leeds maternity service LTHT’s Maternity service was given the big thumbs up from mums and their partners earlier this year in the latest national maternity survey.

The maternity service also scored exceptionally well for treating people with kindness, dignity and respect.

Not only was the Leeds service named ‘most improved’ but it also achieved the best ratings in the country, making Leeds the number one place to have a baby in the whole of England.

People who completed the survey were particularly happy with communication saying that they were spoken to in a

way they could understand and were involved in decisions about their care.

More than 10,000 babies are born in Leeds each year including 205 homebirths in 2018 alone. The Maternity service provides all aspects of routine and specialist care including dedicated care for women having twins and multiple births, the award-winning Haamla service and the highly respected early pregnancy loss service.

Trust performs sixth hand transplant

A new purpose-built clinical research facility is coming to Leeds Work has started on a new £3-million purpose built National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility (CRF) development which will transform the care available for patients taking part in clinical trials.

LTHT is committed to supporting and increasing research and innovation.

There is clear evidence that patients cared for in hospitals with a high volume of research activity have better overall health outcomes than less research active organisations.

“Patients taking part in clinical trials give up precious time to contribute to health research and innovation for future patient and public benefit.”

Based in Bexley Wing on the St James’s Hospital site, the new facility will double the amount of space available for research trials, provide a more spacious, more comfortable and better equipped environment for patients.

The Leeds CRF, a designated National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) facility, will comprise 18 patient chair/ beds treatment delivery area, consulting rooms and supportive clinical care space to deliver high quality outpatient, day case and inpatient treatment and care.

Several thousand patients take part in early experimental clinical trials supported by the CRF at LTHT every year, and many will visit our facilities a number of times over a period of months to receive novel treatments or interventions and enable close safety observation.

Professor Chris Twelves, CRF Clinical Director, says: “Patients taking part in clinical trials give up precious time to contribute to health research and innovation for future patient and public benefit. The new, state-of-the-art CRF will transform the experience of patients taking part in clinical trials.

Earlier this year Professor Simon Kay and the team performed hand transplants for Corinne Hutton, who has been on the waiting list for over four years. Corinne received a double hand transplant and is the first person in Scotland to receive the treatment.

Last month three of our transplant patients got together as part of an internal audit meeting with the team – the first time the whole team and some of their patients had been in one room.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is the only hospital in the UK offering hand and upper limb transplantation, we’ve now completed 10 transplants on six patients since the first patient in 2012.

Professor Simon Kay who heads the team paid particular tribute to the large and very professional team required for these operations and to the families who gift their loved one’s organs that others might benefit. He said, “These latest transplants establish the service as mature and the surgery as becoming routine. They demonstrate the great versatility of the transplantation technique which restores important human attributes and functions to those who have lost their upper limbs.”

“The new development will also help us to take on more trials, which means we’ll be able to offer more and more patients from Leeds and across the region access to new emerging technologies and medication.”

Emily Wood & Jamie Darnton Group as an Operational Risk Officer. Most recently and prior to working at LTHT, I was an Economic Crime Investigator for West Yorkshire Police….I promise I’m not as scary as I sound!

Jamie: I have been a Counter Fraud Specialist within the NHS for almost 18 months but most of my experience comes from serving as a police officer for 14 years. I joined at 18 years old and have experienced work in many areas including complex crime investigation, pro-active policing and counter terrorism search, to name a few.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Emily: Fraud is something that is constantly changing and can affect any part of the Trust, so I really enjoy expanding not only my knowledge, but meeting with different departments and educating them on how they could be affected by fraud.

Emily and Jamie are Counter Fraud Specialists and have worked at the Trust since January 2019.

Summarise the main aspects of your roles?

Essentially, we are here to detect, prevent and investigate fraud, bribery and corruption across the Trust, with the aim of building a resilient counter fraud culture.

Informing and involving are key to our role; this includes raising awareness of NHS fraud, highlighting the risks and the consequences of fraud against the NHS, as well as promoting vigilance amongst the organisation, stakeholders and the public. Some things we do to achieve this include giving presentations, writing blogs and newsletters and distributing other awareness materials.

To prevent and deter fraud, we carry out proactive projects to ensure the Trust has effective fraud controls in place, including reviewing Trust policies.

We also have a reactive part to our role, which is investigating any fraud referrals we receive; this can involve working with the Police and NHS Counter Fraud Authority to ensure those committing fraud are held to account.

Jamie: Meeting the many positive and caring staff working within the NHS and having the privilege of them listening to me pass on some of my knowledge of fraud risks to the NHS. The looks on their faces when you tell them the estimated loss to fraud within the NHS of £1.29billion could pay for 56,000 junior doctor or 40,000 staff nurse posts can be quite a sight!

What is the one thing you would change at LTHT to help you do your job better?

Emily: Therapy dogs for everyone!! Just kidding… although that would be amazing! I would make sure that everyone gets the recognition they deserve. The work that the Trust does is incredible and it’s down to the amazing and hardworking employees it has.

Jamie: Giving people more time and resources to do the job they want to do, to provide the best patient care possible. I think the current climate across the NHS often compromises the ability of staff to do this, much to their own frustration.

What’s your best advice to a new starter at the Trust?

What else have you done in your career so far?

Emily: I would recommend getting a tour of the site you’re working at. It’s like a maze at first, but if you find the right person, they can show you all the shortcuts and best ways to get to places!

Emily: After graduating from Northumbria University with a degree in Crime Science, I spent a couple of years as a Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst; I then moved on to work for the BMW

Jamie: Make the most of your successes, remember and focus on them when having a bad day. Work hard and try making a positive difference, whatever your role may be.

LTHT becomes Hyper Acute Stroke Research Centre LTHT has been accredited with Hyper Acute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC) status. This formal accreditation means the Trust is recognised as having the facilities and highly-skilled staff needed to conduct research into strokes. LTHT joins just ten hospital trusts in the UK in holding this accreditation - a title that requires the organisation to meet strict targets.

HSRC status is awarded to hospital trusts that are able to consistently support

a portfolio of stroke studies requiring advanced neuro-imaging, specialist interventional skills and rapid enrolment of patients.

The accreditation of this status is testament to the skill and hard work of LTHT’s Neurosciences Research team, and will see the team further establish itself at the forefront of hyper acute stroke research to benefit patients in Leeds and throughout the wider region.

Read for Good programme brings magic of reading to young patients Young patients at Leeds Children’s Hospital were given a treat for their imagination with a visit from a Read for Good storyteller ahead of World Book Day in March.

National children’s literacy charity, Read for Good, rolled out its bright-orange mobile bookcases and professional storytellers to all 30 of the UK’s major children’s hospitals, including Leeds Children’s Hospital in 2014, and since then has been providing regular visits from their iconic mobile bookcase and professional storyteller.

The Jamaica Project launches The Chief Nursing Officer of Jamaica and their Critical Care Course Coordinator visited LTHT to officially launch The Jamaica Project.

Learning Practitioner whilst at the Trust and will be supported to achieve a set of nationally recognised critical care competencies.

The Jamaica Project is a collaboration with Health Education England to improve the delivery of critical care in Jamaica by up-skilling core groups of critical care nurses from all over Jamaica.

When they return to Jamaica they will disseminate their enhanced critical care skills to their colleagues with the eventual aim to train up enough staff to open up more critical care beds in Jamaica.

This will be achieved by facilitating clinical placements across Adult Critical Care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, and supporting quality improvement projects when the nurses return to Jamaica.

The Jamaican nurses will work under the newly developed title of Global

The group of Global Learning Practitioners will join the Trust later this year and this will create a platform for a long lasting relationship with the Jamaican Ministry of Health and globally showcase Critical Care in Leeds.

The scheme is entirely funded by donations and children in schools across the country running the charity’s long-established sponsored Readathon.

Leeds Children’s Hospital has received more than 4,500 brand new books from the charity since the scheme was established, as well as countless visits by Read for Good’s professional storyteller, Amanda Smith.

Amanda said: “It’s always an enormous pleasure working with staff at Leeds Children’s Hospital. They love the books and bookcase and join in enthusiastically when accompanying me as I tell stories around the ward.

The most rewarding part of my job to see young patients and their families smiling, chatting and laughing at the end of my sessions. There’s something very special about helping an unwell child feel brighter through stories and books. They provide escapism, promote wellbeing...and above all, they’re fun!”

Consultant Cardiologist Dr Jim McLenachan retired from the Trust in January. Jim joined the Trust in 1992 having trained in Glasgow with Professor Henry Dargie, and in Boston USA. Although appointed as a cardiac imaging specialist he quickly developed an interest in Interventional Cardiology and, along with colleagues, pioneered the development of coronary angioplasty and stenting in Leeds.

Gwen Sayce, has retired from her role as Staff Nurse on Ward 1 at Wharfedale Hospital. Gwen started her career in the NHS as a post girl in 1969 in Lancashire before crossing the border to Yorkshire to start her enrolled nurse training at the LGI in 1972. She then moved to Wharfedale Hospital in 1989 and went on to complete further nurse training to become an RGN.

It is impossible to overstate the impact of Jim’s work on the practice of Cardiology in Leeds and nationally, he was instrumental in bringing Leeds Cardiology into the modern era. His strategic sense and high level insight has kept Leeds at the forefront of UK Cardiac care. He pioneered the national roll out of Primary PCI for myocardial infarction as national clinical lead and was instrumental in bringing TAVI to Leeds. He has held high level posts with NHS England, co-chairing Clinical Reference Group for complex invasive Cardiology. Most recently he has acted as a highly valued and successful Clinical Director within the Cardiorespiratory CSU. He is characterised by a remarkably calm and unruffled approach to clinical care, never appearing stressed even in the most serious clinical situations. He is a never ending source of entertaining anecdotes, a connoisseur of fine wine and is an accomplished (if accident prone) skier.

Most importantly he has always been a truly superb colleague and mentor. His wise advice and calm head will be deeply missed by his colleagues, who wish him a very happy retirement.

Gwen says she has thoroughly enjoyed her time as a nurse and will miss her friends and colleagues as well as all the regular patients who come to the ward for their day treatments. Her motto has always been, “to care for others as you would expect to be cared for yourself”.

Gwen’s colleagues gathered to say goodbye and to wish her a very happy retirement, enjoying the many cruises she intends to enjoy now she has the time. She will be greatly missed by all for her caring personality and nursing experience.

Margaret Chambers

Dr Josie Brown and Dr Ian Wilson In March the Paediatric anaesthetic department bid a fond farewell to two respected colleagues Dr Josie Brown and Dr Ian Wilson. Both have been Clinical Directors in the department and at one point at the same time across the city. They have a combined service time of 65 years.

Both started as consultants in the 90s, one in the East and one in the West.

Josie Brown has kept a logbook since the beginning, she has given over 10, 000 anaesthetics!

Over 170 people came to say goodbye at a party at the Mansion in Roundhay in February. Colleagues from the many specialities they have worked with over the years, including colleagues who have retired themselves, attended to wish them well.

In a speech Ian said: “I am happy to say the department I am leaving is a fantastic department with such an incredibly supportive team.” Josie said: “For so many years the LGI has been like my home, so many of you have been like family.”

Colleagues wish both Josie and Ian the very best for an enjoyable retirement.

Margaret started working in the NHS in 1966 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as a trainee medical secretary. She worked there until 1972 when she left to have her family. In 1975 Margaret started a new job at Huddersfield as a medical secretary until 1976 when she left Huddersfield to work for one of their consultants in his private practice.

She stayed there until 1983 when she left to start work at Pinderfields Hospital as a medical secretary until 1997 when she retired. She worked from home for the next 10 years doing medico-legal work, as well as working part time at LGI as the trauma secretary in orthopaedics for 6 months and then 6 years working for Nick Phillips in neurosurgery.

In 2003 Margaret retired again but a month later was contacted by LGI asking if she would work on the “secretarial bank”. She has worked continuously from then in neurosciences and urology.

However, this year Margaret decided enough was enough and retired for good in March. Margaret will be sadly missed by all in neurosciences, who wish her a very happy retirement.

Nigel Lumb Colleagues and friends joined Nigel Lumb to celebrate his career in the NHS as he retired from his post as Head of Health and Safety in March. Nigel started his career in Health & Safety working for Bradford Council in 1982.

He joined Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS FT in 1992 before taking up his post as Head of Health & Safety at the Trust in January 2005.

Nigel has played a leading role in promoting a positive safety culture within Leeds hospitals to improve care for patients, helping a wide range of staff to learn from errors, notably through the investigations he has led and the training he has provided. Nigel has always focused his attentions on improving systems and processes and helping staff to deal with challenging situations.

Nigel recently led the Trust to achieve the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold award for Health & Safety, which recognises the effective systems in place for the management of health and safety in our hospitals. Nigel always understood the importance of perfect timing, taking the opportunity to retire on the day of his 60th birthday!

His colleagues wish him a happy and healthy retirement.

Val Curtis Val Curtis retired from her role as medical secretary in March. Val started working for the Trust in May 1991, and joined the Fertility Control Unit in April 1999, booking appointments and dealing with patient letters.

She worked for Mr Gbolade and Mr Nagib in FCU alongside General Gynaecology, scheduling patients for theatre and providing a secretarial service to Mr Gbolade up until her retirement date. In total she had 28 years’ service.

Val was a well-respected and knowledgeable member of the team, with a strong character. Her colleagues wish her well for a happy and healthy retirement.

Donations Dementia cannula sleeves A huge thank you to generous volunteers from Handmade for Dementia who have donated knitted cannula sleeves for patients.

Liver transplant team Thank you to Chris and Ann for their £10,000 donation to the liver transplant team. This generous donation will go towards the team’s fundraising campaign ‘Making Every Liver Count’ which will fund a new perfusion machine.

Neonatal Resuscitaire donation

The knitted sleeves improve the patient’s experience while in hospital by giving them something to fiddle with - this can help with anxiety and also reduces the chance of them removing important cannulas in their arms.

Thank you to Bill Calvert MBE and Sue Calvert who have generously funded a Neonatal Resuscitaire with a £10,000 donation through Leeds Cares.

The Resuscitaire allows doctors to give immediate respiratory support with medical gases and appropriate heating to prevent further deterioration in a baby’s condition. It also provides a safer way of transferring babies to the appropriate facility, ultimately ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Pink Events refurbishment Thank you to the Pink Events and the family of Janet Rhodes, who have raised money to refurbish the consultation rooms in the breast department in Janet’s memory. This includes pictures for the walls depicting wild flowers, which was a passion of Janet’s, and books for patients with children to help them understand what is happening to their parent.

Knitted hats and blankets Olivia and lots of babies on our Neonatal Units are extremely grateful for the lovely hats and blankets that have been donated so generously by a huge number of generous knitters!

The units have received so many they are even running out of space and have lots of spares - as demonstrated by Marijke, Staff Nurse (pictured).

Thank you so much for all of your donations, they really do mean a lot to our babies and their families.

Take Heart Capnography machine Thank you to the Take Heart Charity, who have generously funded a Capnography machine to help with nurse led sedation procedures within the Cardiac Catheter Labs. This will allow the team to provide close monitoring to patients undergoing procedures requiring sedation.

J82 Day room Thank you to Bob Cockshaw who donated £3,000 for the refurbishment of J82’s Day Room as it made his experience of staying in hospital a better one. Bob made the donation seven years after his treatment and two weeks after being finally being discharged, and he said he can’t thank the staff enough for helping him overcome his illness.

60 seconds Mark Ramsden What do you do to wind down and relax after a hard week at work?

I like making models, crocheting and needle work. I just love making or creating things. My wife and I make fiddle mits for people with dementia for some of the local care homes when we have time.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be lots of things like most children, such as a fireman or soldier etc. I never thought I would be working in the caring profession; yet I’m glad I do.

What is your favourite film?

Frederick Forsyth.

What is your ideal holiday destination and why?

Anywhere where the weather is nice and so are the people, be it local or abroad. Saying that I do love Scotland.

Mark is a Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technician and has worked at the Trust since 1992.

Tell us something we don’t know about you …

I collect Dr Marten’s shoes and boots with my wife; between us we have more than 260 pairs.

What is your favourite food?

Fish ‘n’ chips, bread and butter with a pot of Yorkshire Tea.

Outline Planning Applications submitted for Hospitals of the Future In February, the Trust took another step closer to realising its early proposals for two new hospitals at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) by submitting an Outline Planning Application (OPA) for the development to Leeds City Council.

The first of two state-of-the-art hospitals will offer health services for adults, with new theatres for day case procedures and added critical care facilities. The second will be an amazing, new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital, designed around the needs of children and young people.

Both hospitals will support flexible, personalised care based on the latest treatments, technologies and innovation.

They will also enable the Trust to expand its specialist services, benefitting patients from across Leeds and the wider region.

Last Autumn, as part of the process for submitting the OPA, the Trust held an eight-week engagement period with key stakeholders and members of the public, inviting them to comment on the early plans. The Trust would like to thank everyone who provided feedback.

It’s been really useful and has already made an impact on the design proposals.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, parking at the LGI was an issue for many people, so in response to these concerns we have increased the number of parking spaces proposed in the OPA. Leeds City Council’s Planning department is now considering the OPA and the Trust has submitted an Outline Business Case for the new hospitals, which

will be subject to an NHS review and approvals process. Although there is still some way to go to secure approvals and funding, the Trust will continue to develop the new hospitals’ design proposals, considering the outcome of various engagements to help inform the planning and design briefs and technical specifications.
