Elaine raises £1,600 for the Jasmine Centre A local fundraiser has netted over £1,600 for Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Jasmine Centre, a service specialising in the care and treatment of those with breast cancer.

Elaine Tracey was diagnosed with the disease on 4 January 2013.

Over a period of three years, the mother of three went through a number of treatments with us, including lymph node clearance, a bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy, before receiving the all clear in September 2013.

Fighting the flu: First to 75% We are the first acute trust in the country to vaccinate 75 per cent of frontline staff against the flu for the second year in a row, administering over 3,000 vaccines in just five weeks.

This year’s flu campaign has been spearheaded by a dedicated team of vaccinators made up of Occupational Health and Wellbeing practitioners and peer vaccinators in various roles, including Chief Executive, and registered nurse, Richard Parker, who personally gave the jab to a number of staff.

The team have visited wards and departments in order to give medics and clinicians easy access to the vaccine, while providing special drop-in sessions for weekend workers and night staff. We even managed to hit the target in record time, a week ahead of 2016’s performance.

Richard Parker, Chief Executive, said: “This is another fantastic achievement for the Trust and one which shows how caring our staff are and how dedicated they are to protecting our patients. This will help us to reduce the impact of the flu virus this winter. It’s particularly important that we hit the target this year as we’re expecting a particularly bad flu season. I want to say well done to the vaccination team for their tireless efforts, and to the 3,385 members of staff who’ve had

their jabs.”

Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive of NHS Employers, which runs the national flu fighter campaign, said: “This is a truly impressive achievement and shows real dedication.

In order to stem the tide of infection, it’s

especially important for frontline health and care workers to be vaccinated, as they will have the greatest contact with vulnerable people, such as the elderly and the very young. We hope other trusts will follow this stellar example.”

Local school students help with vaccination drive A team of students from Hall Cross Academy in Doncaster supported flu vaccinators at the Trust to protect staff against the winter illness.

The students, who are all studying healthcare sciences at A Level, accompanied the vaccinators on the wards at the hospitals, supporting them in vaccinating over 60 per cent of the workforce in just over three weeks.

The students recorded details of those who had been vaccinated and guided them through the consent procedure. They kept a daily log of areas they had attended, so the Trust could make sure they visited all wards and departments, and stocked the flu trolleys for each outing.

Megan Mellor, one of the students who took part, said: “Working with the nurses on this vaccination drive has given me further understanding of their roles and I’m really looking forward to pursuing a career as a mental health nurse with the help of this experience.”

The project was arranged to give the students an insight into working in healthcare. Dawn Stokes, Year 12 Manager at Hall Cross Academy, said: “Our students are at the point where they are making important decisions about their future career plans and this opportunity has given them valuable, quality experience to support their university and employment applications.”

Help us in our fight against flu Flu can cause a range of illnesses from mild to severe, even among healthy people. People aged 65 and over, pregnant women, anyone with diabetes, chest or heart conditions and others in at-risk groups are advised to ask their GP about having the flu vaccine.

Visitors can also help in the fight against flu by not coming to the Trust to see relatives and friends in hospital if they have flu and cold symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, cough, body aches and fatigue.

Keeping norovirus out of hosp This winter we’re urging our patients and visitors to help us keep norovirus out of hospital, by staying away if you have symptoms of the illness.

Nicknamed the ‘winter vomiting bug’, norovirus becomes more active during the colder months. People unfortunate enough to contract the bug can feel particularly unwell and it can spread quickly in close-knit areas such as hospitals, schools and nursing homes.

Following these simple steps can help keep our patients and staff safe from norovirus this winter:

• Don’t come into hospital if you have signs of a stomach upset • Always wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before handling food • Wait at least 48 hours after being symptom free before visiting hospital.

For most people, it will clear up in a few days and they can care for themselves at home with paracetemol and plenty of fluids. For our patients who are already ill in hospital however, it can have worrying consequences.

Minor Injuries Unit Montagu Hospital

Emergency Department or 999

The unit is open every day from 9.00am to 9.00pm, except on Christmas Day when it is closed. The unit re-opens on Boxing Day. It is staffed by experienced emergency nurse practitioners who can assess and treat a wide range of minor injuries and ailments, including sprains, cuts and bruises and some simple fractures.

Hospital emergency departments provide immediate care for people who show the symptoms of serious illness or are badly injured. If you call 999 for an ambulance the telephone advisor will arrange appropriate assistance for the patient based on information about the illness or injury.

DBTH maternity services providing the best start in life There has never been a better time to have a baby at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH). The recent successful recruitment of 33 newly qualified midwives means there are currently no vacancies in maternity services, a significant achievement at a time when there is a national shortage of around 3,500 midwives across the country. £80k additional funding for training and education has recently enabled more maternity staff to undergo new born life support training and innovative ‘SIM-MOM’ training.

Add to this the smoking cessation service for pregnant women successfully supporting more than 10% of expectant mothers to stop smoking, which is significantly higher than the national average, and a recent accreditation award in breastfeeding management, our maternity services really are doing everything possible to help parents and families give their new-borns the best possible start in life.

We caught up with Sharon Dickinson, Head of Midwifery at DBTH to talk about recent developments in the service, how local people can contribute to normalising birth and what that means for expectant mothers.

“We are absolutely delighted that 33 new midwives chose DBTH as a place to start their midwifery careers. It is a testament to all of our fantastic staff, who have provided the best possible learning environment for the student midwives when they are with us on placement.

Their experience in the service, learning from our established staff is what has made such a positive impact making DBTH a hospital of choice, at a time where many can pick where they want to work”.

“Having more midwives really does make a difference to expectant families. Having recruited to all of our vacancies we can increase the level of one-to-one support provided to women during labour from 55% to 72.6%.”

Increased one-to-one midwifery support is crucial in ‘normalising birth’. The Campaign for Normal Birth is part of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Better Births Initiative, which highlights how most women would prefer to give birth as physiologically (naturally) as possible and how that is also the safest way to give birth.

Sharon explains: “Over the years we have seen what is described as the ‘medicalisation’ of birth.

When anything is identified as varying from what is seen as the norm it can often lead to a spiral of medical interventions such as monitoring, drip or epidural. The RCM position is that whilst normal physiological birth is to be celebrated, it is about interpreting the risks and normalising the process of birth for all women. By supporting the majority of women to have a normal birth we can also free up resources for women who will

need additional support at birth.

“Part of that medicalisation over the years has seen women lying flat during delivery so they can be monitored throughout birth. This is not the best thing during labour, and may contribute to slowing down birth, increasing the need for medical interventions. The RCM encourage active and upright positions to assist with labour and birth and having more midwives in the service means that we will be able to provide more women with support and be more flexible around their needs to get them in the most comfortable position for birth”

Maternity services across Doncaster and Bassetlaw are extremely busy with more than 5,500 babies delivered each year, with only six complaints for every 1,600 births.

Sharon said: “We don’t always get it right and we work with our parents and families when mistakes are made to ensure we learn from what others have experienced and make improvements to our service wherever possible.

However that statistic is something we should be very proud of as it demonstrates what a fantastic job our Maternity Services do for the majority of families using our services.”

Our services are recognised by UNICEF as ‘Baby Friendly’ Our maternity services have been reaccredited by the prestigious Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI).

Following an assessment visit by a UNICEF team in July, we were recognised as having best practice standards in place and was awarded full reaccreditation status for a further two years.

The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides practical and effective ways for health services to improve care for all mothers and babies. In the UK, the initiative works with hospitals to promote and support infant feeding and to strengthen mother-baby and family relationships.

The Trust, which runs maternity units at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital, was praised for supporting mothers, however they choose to feed their babies, to form strong and loving relationships with their new-borns by encouraging skin-to-skin contact and helping them to understand how their little ones communicate and how to respond.

All women cared for during their pregnancy at DBTH receive information on relationship building and breastfeeding and are offered help with feeding once the baby is born, regardless of which feeding method they choose. Mothers are also given information on how to access support at home and in the community when they leave hospital.

Elaine Merrills, Infant Feeding Coordinator,

said: “This award demonstrates the commitment from our midwives and maternity support workers to provide the highest quality of care for women, their babies and families.”

Following the success of this reaccreditation visit, the BFI assessors have recommended that the Trust should consider implementation of the Achieving Sustainability standards and progression to a Gold award.

Susan Henderson, Infant Feeding Coordinator, said: “Working towards the Gold Award

will allow us to expand on all the hard work that has gone into achieving Baby Friendly accreditation. This will make sure that future generations of babies, their mothers and families in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, will continue to experience Baby Friendly standards of care.”

Our Trust will be the 57th maternity unit to be fully reaccredited following reassessment, out of the 157 maternity units in England who are currently registered with BFI.

Realistic Birth Simulator comes to DBTH A piece of clinical training equipment which provides realistic simulations of childbirth is being trialled at DBTH. The ‘SIM-MOM’ has an accurate anatomy and enables birthing training for many staff groups including midwives, Doctors and support staff. The model mimics heart rates, breathing, bleeding and physical changes which can happen during maternity emergencies.

Staff can take part in numerous birth scenarios from straightforward deliveries to more complex births, such as breech births, which require quick thinking.

Julie Shaw, Clinical Educator for Midwifery, said: “Whilst most babies are born without difficulty, every pregnancy and labour are different and should problems arise, we need our midwives and doctors to react quickly, safely and effectively.

The SIM-MOM will allow us to rehearse obstetric emergencies in controlled settings so that we have well trained teams ready to ensure the safety of our mothers and their babies when an emergency situation occurs in real life.”

The simulator has been tried out by staff and the Trust will be purchasing their own

SIM-MOM as part of their Health Education England Maternity Safety bid.

The SIM-MOM will also be used to train staff in the Trust’s emergency departments so that they are prepared for pregnant women who attend A&E with complications.

Local Cyclist urges men to take up screening after life-saving op A local man has undergone a life-saving operation after taking up his invitation for abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (AAA).

Stephen Wilson, a keen cyclist, had no physical symptoms and was in good health, cycling up to 250 miles each week. After turning 65, he took up his invitation for AAA screening, which uncovered a potentially lifethreatening aneurysm.

An AAA is when the aorta, the main blood vessel in the body weakens and expands. If untreated, it can rupture, which creates a serious risk of death due to internal bleeding.

Stephen received his invite through the post in February to book an appointment at his local health centre and the procedure, which involves a painless ultrasound scan on the stomach, took just ten minutes.

In a very British manner, we tend to put our awkwardness and unease above good health. But ask yourself which is better, five minutes of blushes or a lifetime of uncertainty?

Every day, nine women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. In South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, one in four decide not to attend their routine screening appointments. Usually there are no symptoms, so it is only by having a smear test that any abnormal cells on the cervix can be found before they develop into cancer.

I often see women who believe they are immune because they have had their HPV vaccination, but this isn’t the case. The best way to protect yourself against cervical cancer is by picking out your invite and arranging a screening appointment. If you’re aged between 25 and 64, you are eligible between every three and five years.

Do the smart thing, pick up and take up your invite. It might just save your life.

I had no symptoms and felt fit and well, so it was a shock to discover I had an aneurysm that could have ruptured at any time.

“All the staff I encountered at my appointments and during my inpatient stay were fantastic, I cannot thank them enough.

Now that I know more about AAA I am encouraging all my friends, 65 and above, to attend their screening appointments.”

Men in their 65th year are automatically invited by post to attend a screening clinic but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme on 01709 649100.

Diabetic Eye Screening hits 2500 in Bassetlaw Our Diabetic Eye Screening Programme in Bassetlaw, which provides sightsaving eye checks, is celebrating a landmark achievement.

The programme, which runs clinics at Bassetlaw and Retford Hospital has been operating for just six months and has screened its 2,500th patient.

Eye screening checks for diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye. This can lead to a loss of sight if not

detected and treated early, therefore everyone aged 12 and over with diabetes receives an invitation to be screened once a year.

Tomoko Ueta was the 2,500th patient to have their screening appointment with the new service. Tomoko said: “I have only recently been diagnosed with diabetes and within two weeks of receiving my diagnosis I was attending my eye screening. I was amazed at how quickly I got an appointment.”

The Trust adopted the programme in April 2017 and since then have increased the

number of appointments available to people in Bassetlaw living with diabetes.

If you have diabetes there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of sight loss. As well as attending your screening appointments every year, make sure you exercise regularly, eat well and control your blood sugar levels and avoid smoking.

Joanne Byram: Breast Screening saved my life Having returned to work after fighting my very own battle with breast cancer, I feel now is the perfect time to share my story and I hope that it will give you the inspiration you need to take up that all important breast screening appointment.

My role in the Breast Screening Team has instilled just how important breast screening really is, so when I received my first mammogram appointment I didn’t think twice about attending. I remember it like it was yesterday. The whole thing was over in minutes and even though I worked for the department, I was treated like any other patient which ensured I fully understood the process and felt comfortable at all times. I’d had no signs or symptoms and felt great in myself so I was quite confident that everything would be fine.

Within a week I had devastating news. The mammogram had picked up breast cancer in my right breast. My entire world turned upside down.

Initially, it all felt very surreal, as though the whole thing was happening to someone

These people were going through a worse journey than myself, their strength and sheer will power astounds me to this day. The

In November 2015 I opted for a double mastectomy and the following November I had a reconstruction. I’ve learnt so much on this journey from the people I spoke to along the way. It was through talking to other ladies that I found out about a lady at the Jasmine Centre who took in regular bras and adapted for prostheses – it’s little things like this that become the big things!

Breast cancer has given me a new lease of life.

It has made me realise what really is important – if it wasn’t for breast screening, it could well have been a different story.

Please, take my advice and book that appointment, don’t put it off – there’s no time like now – I’m living proof that breast screening really does save lives.

Revamped catering coming to the Trust We are working with with Sodexo, the world’s largest services company, for our patient dining and retail services. The 10 year contract will bring with it significant investment in food and eating facilities provided for patients, staff and visitors.

“Over the past number of years, our catering offer has remained quite static, without much development but now we will benefit from investment in our facilities, as well as the introduction of new technology, bringing real benefits for our patients.”

Our catering services will see huge improvements, with high street eateries set to open their doors, while inpatients will benefit from a revamped, innovative and tasty dining service.

Patients will use a new electronic ordering system, through which they can order up to two hours before their meal is served. The hospital’s kitchens will also receive real-time data for cancelled or changed orders, meaning a significant reduction in food waste. This information, based on popular choices, will be used to develop tasty, high quality menus

for patients.

New meal trolleys will be introduced, providing a kitchen to bedside service, ensuring appetising patient food arrives on time and at the right temperature.

Refurbishments will be made to Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s

kitchens, while both Bassetlaw and Montagu will see further investment to ensure the Catering Team have everything they need.

NCS students put their mark on DRI Over the summer holidays the Trust has facilitated four visits from the National Citizenship Service, based at Club Doncaster Foundation.

Eighteen young people, aged between 14 and 17, worked closely with our Estates Team and Communications Department to decorate the corridor near Children’s Outpatients at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

They designed art work with a ‘keep DBTH tidy’ theme which will soon be displayed on the freshly painted walls.

In addition to adding colour to our corridors, the young people have raised over £1,500 for the Trust’s Charitable Funds which will be used to enhance patient care and provide home comforts to our wards.

Another seven students spent a full week bag packing and carrying out sponsored activities such as bike rides, walks and swims to raise money for Bassetlaw Hospital Day Surgery Unit.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all at Club Doncaster Foundation and the NCS for their hard work and generosity.

We worked on the corridor between the Children’s Ward and the Frailty Ward, so during our time there we saw many elderly patients. After witnessing this I have grown ever more admiration for the nurses, doctors

and all the staff for taking care of the sick every day; as I know it’s something I wouldn’t be able to do.

Overall, it has definitely been a good learning experience. I have met many dedicated and passionate people and they have inspired me to be a hard working person in the future.”

Leading the way for training and education DBTH is leading the region in certain aspects of clinical and medical education according to recent learner survey results.

Each year the Trust takes part in the General Medical Council’s (GMC) Training Survey, the results of which help us to monitor the quality of medical education.

In 2017, doctors in training, health professionals and mentors took part in the year’s national and local training surveys, showing big improvements at DBTH. Most notably, the GMC survey reflects positive results for the Trust’s Acute Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine and General Surgery, all of which have scored as best in the region. In other areas, Endocrine, Diabetes and Gastroenterology were second best in South Yorkshire with notable improvements in Emergency

Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics. Additionally, Core Medical Training and Geriatric medicine came in for particular praise, not only leading regionally but placing us joint fourth nationally.

These improvements are reflected in the evaluations received from pre-registration students, for example nurses, midwives and allied health professionals on placement here. They reported an overall satisfaction rate for learners of 98% (taken from Practice Placement Quality Assurance), placing the Trust amongst the best in the region in its first year as a teaching hospital.

These achievements highlight the success of the Trust’s focus on innovation, improvement, inclusivity, person centred care and leadership. There has been an increased emphasis on educational and clinical supervision, enhanced with consultant presence from 9am to 9pm, which has created a supportive environment for learners. Mentors are also around more often, improving relationships between supervisors and learners.

Celebrating a caring milestone One of our care groups, which is responsible for caring for the Trust’s elderly and most vulnerable patients, is celebrating an entire year without an avoidable severe hospital acquired pressure ulcer.

The Care Group known as Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Frailty has 11 wards across Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Mexborough and has the largest bed-base within the Trust, often looking after older and more infirm patients with conditions such as dementia.

From 19 October 2016 to the same date in 2017, the Care Group has not reported

a single pressure ulcer, with some services going as long as four years without incident.

To celebrate this achievement, the wards were visited by Head of Nursing for MSK and Frailty, Cindy Storer, and Chief Executive, Richard Parker, and presented with an award and various tasty treats.

A common problem in hospitals, pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores, develop when the skin and underlying tissue becomes damaged usually from being confined to lying in a bed or sitting for long periods of time. They can range in severity from patches of discoloured skin to open wounds which can cause distress to both

patients and their carers. With the correct knowledge, skills and expertise, many of these sores can be avoided.

Staff have also been trained in skin care and the types of dressings to use when a patient’s skin is at risk of damage. Another important part of this success is the adoption of ‘open’ visiting times for relatives and carers to visit at any time of the day or night as guardians of patient safety.

No stranger to accolades, the Care Group was recently named runner up for the Elderly Care catergory for the prestigious Nursing Times Awards 2017.

THANK YOU TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES Thank you to Bassetlaw ‘Friends’ for their continued support The day room on Ward A4 at Bassetlaw Hospital has received two colourful chairs as a donation from the Bassetlaw Freemasons.

The League of Friends, founded over 50 years ago, raises thousands of pounds every year for patient comforts at Bassetlaw Hospital.

A4 is a stroke and diabetes ward with a high number of elderly and frail patients.

It is the ward team’s vision to brighten up the day room to encourage them, where possible, to get out of bed. The room will also have an activities section where patients can do jigsaws, play cards, read books or even listen to the radio.

Hospital donation in memory of Roger The family of a patient have returned to Doncaster Royal Infirmary to say thank you and present a fantastic donation of almost £1,200 to the hospital’s Acute Medical Unit (AMU).

Miriam Boyack, Ward A4 Manager, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to the League Friends and the Bassetlaw Freemasons for their support, it means so much to the staff and our patients.”

Roger Fox sadly passed away on 19 April, having being cared for on the AMU. Roger’s wife Christine, daughter Claire and son Matt, visited the ward to present the donation and thank the team.

Cyclist rides 85 miles to raise money for Chatsfield Suite

The £1,198 was collected from friends and family, preferring that any money spent on funeral flowers instead be used to help patients at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, in memory of the much-missed husband and father.

Local bike rider, Ben Campbell, has completed an 85 mile trip, raising almost £300 for the Chatsfield Suite at Doncaster Royal Infirmary in memory of his late granddad, Kenneth.

Claire Moorhouse, Roger’s daughter, said: “We had excellent and professional staff looking after dad on the Acute Medical Unit. They didn’t just look after him but also the entire family, and we couldn’t have asked for better care at such a difficult time. They really helped us through it all and we couldn’t think of a better cause to donate to.”

80 year old Kenneth was a frequent visitor at the Chatsfield suite, which provides chemotherapy services, and was very popular with the staff that cared for him. After his passing, Ben decided to raise funds for the service, donating money in memory of his grandfather as a way to show his, and his family’s, gratitude, as well as to benefit patients going through treatment.

Lindsey Stocks, Ward Sister, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Christine, Claire and Matt, and everyone who contributed, for this donation. Generous donations like this are what we rely on for all of the extra bits that can make our patients feel more comfortable.”

Kind-hearted Lacey donates her toys to the Eye Centre Charitable youngster, Lacey Jackson, from Doncaster, has donated an assortment of her toys to the newlycreated children’s play area in the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre.

Lacey, who is a patient at the clinic, called in to see her toys during a visit to the hospital with her Grandmother, Debbie Jackson. She said: “Lacey has been raised to share and look after others, and even though she is just four years old, she handpicked the toys she wanted to donate. I am very proud of her.”

The Doncaster Eye Centre, which was officially opened in November 2016, has a new children’s clinic with consulting rooms styled and decorated to suit younger patients and improved facilities for minor operations and eye injections.

Emma Foxon-Wise, Ophthalmology Sister, said: “It is not every day that a child gives up some of their toys for others and I want to say a huge thank you to Lacey on behalf of everyone at the hospital for being so kind and thoughtful.”

NewsfromtheGovernors ACS Conference DBTH governors joined over 100 governors from across the patch at a special conference on what the Accountable Care System means for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw which was led by our chair, Suzy Brain England OBE. Former Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson, was joined by NHS England’s Medical Director, Sir Bruce Keogh, and Chief Executive of the ACS, Sir Andrew Cash, as well as a panel of governors to explore the implications for the ACS. The session, held at Rotherham United’s New York Stadium, is one of three events for local decision-makers to be held over the next few months.

Board of Governors The Board of Governors met on 26 October 2017 where they considered a review that they had commissioned into their own effectiveness. The review explored a range of issues including the governor role, working with members, communications, involvement and influence, governance, the chair, governor support and overall effectiveness.

Bassetlaw Open Surgery Public Governor for Bassetlaw, Hazel Brand, was joined by governor colleagues from across the Trust at an open surgery for members and patients at the Hospital on 23 October.

The idea behind the surgery was to find out what patients felt about their visit to Bassetlaw. The vast majority of the feedback received was extremely positive and we will be looking into any areas for improvement.

Other activities Since the last edition, Governors have held a Timeout which focussed on quality and effectiveness, innovation and improvement, ophthalmology and the work that the Trust is doing to tackle diabetes and obesity.

The last quarter has also seen another round of committees. The Health and Care of Adults focussed on the requirements of the new-style CQC inspections whilst the Health and Care of Young People received an update on a variety of young people’s service issues. The Communications, Engagement and Membership Committee received a demonstration of the new website and made some suggestions for its further enhancement.

Governors have also been actively leading the search for two non-executives to join our Board of Directors. The Appointments and Remuneration Committee met at the end of August where they decided that the four vacancies whose terms fall due in 2018 should go to open recruitment. Finally, governors have been learning more about the Trust’s work through some new style Governor Briefings. Recently they received briefings from the Acting Director of Nursing and Medical Director around patient experience, the new Learning from Deaths requirement and the Hospital Services Review.

Doncaster surgeon receives OBE from Her Majesty The Queen Mr Quraishi with Suzy Brain England and Richard Parker

A Doncaster Surgeon has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), receiving his award from The Queen earlier this month.

Mr Muhammad Shahed Quraishi, a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon at DBTH, has received the prestigious accolade for the care and treatment he has provided to the many patients he has seen in the 30 years he has spent working in the NHS, 16 of which with the Trust.

Mr Quraishi said: “I am completely humbled and honoured to have received an OBE, however, I have to say that this is a team award. I am grateful for the support of everybody at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals – this is a great recognition of the Trust’s commitment to providing high-quality training and patient care. I am very thankful to all those who were responsible for my receiving this great

The married father of two holds a host of achievements to date which include being awarded Visiting Professor status at the Capital Medical University in Beijing, achieving the National Clinical Excellence Silver Award in 2015, being a finalist for the Silver Scalpel Award from the Association of Surgeons in Training in 2014, and more recently being elected as the President for the Royal Society of Medicine – a position he will take up next year.

History Matters Kay Baker, former Surgical Appliance Officer at DRI, celebrated her 96th birthday on 21 October. Kay’s long and valuable association with the hospital began during World War II. The back garden of her family home on St. Patrick’s Road overlooked the DRI site, in those days a much smaller hospital set within open fields. Anticipating war casualties, in 1939 the Ministry of Health caused five prefabricated huts, providing 200 beds, to be erected to the south of the main ward block (this area is still known as the Hut 5 car park, though the huts are long gone).

War was declared in September 1939, and soon casualties began to arrive. Kay’s mother asked permission to visit some of the military patients, most of whom were far from their homes. She would arrive each Wednesday armed with jars of home-made custard, much appreciated by the inmates. Kay visited at weekends. As the men’s convalescence progressed they were allowed out of the hospital grounds, and some were invited into local people’s homes for a Sunday meal.

Again Kay’s mother played host, even though wartime food rationing made feeding an extra mouth more difficult. On Boxing Day 1943 one young soldier, invited for lunch, disclosed that it was his 21st birthday. A cake was somehow produced, accompanied, as is the custom in Yorkshire, by a wedge of

cheese. ‘Spice’ (fruit) cake and cheese was a new experience for the southerner, and he never forgot it, remaining in contact with the Baker family until long after the war ended.

Kay trained as a shorthand typist at Doncaster Commercial School, and worked during the war for the Ministry of Food. In 1954 DRI Matron Janet Hunter, remembering the Bakers’ wartime kindness, invited Kay to take on the role of Almoner.

The hospital almoner, a title now extinct, dealt with patients’ social and financial matters. Kay declined this offer, instead finding employment with the West Riding Police Service. A few years later the hospital job again became available; this time she accepted, and began her career at DRI in January 1957. The almoner’s office was given the job of dealing with the numerous requests for appliances for those suffering from war injuries, polio victims and the like, a task that involved much paper-work. Within a few years came DRI’s development as a District General Hospital, and this brought many changes. Kay was appointed Surgical Appliance Officer, based in the orthopaedic department, a post she held until her retirement in October 1981.

Later, she became actively involved in the foundation and running of the local branch of the Back Pain Association. Recently, Kay has cemented her long connection with DRI by making a generous financial donation to the Trust, which will be used to help provide a much-needed male wet-room on the orthopaedic wards. As a token of thanks, a small party was held for Kay on Ward 1. DRI’s patients, both during the war and afterwards, owe much to Kay’s kindness, consideration and professional skills.
