Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of Link Magazine, and a very Happy New Year to you all.

I must start by saying a big thank you to all our colleagues who have been working over the Christmas period to keep services running and provide care to our patients. I hope you found a little bit of time to enjoy the festive celebrations as well.

The commitment, knowledge, enthusiasm and kindness of our staff never ceases to amaze me, and there are many examples of that in this edition of Link. You can read all about the Thank You Awards, where once again there were numerous heart-warming stories of colleagues going way beyond the norm to help our patients.

It is vitally important that as an organisation we support all of our staff to reach their potential, and so it is fantastic to see stories about schemes such as the supported internships. Supported internships help young people, including those with disabilities, to gain vital work experience

within the Trust, and on P8 you can read about the success story of one intern, Courtney, who has been able to go on and secure a job within STH as a result.

I am also delighted to report that we have now adopted Rainbow badges in support of LGBTQ+ patients and colleagues. The badges simply indicate that that we are inclusive of all identities, regardless of how people define themselves. As well as this, we have appointed chairs of our new staff networks for Disabilities, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Groups and LGBTQ+. I am very excited about the progress we are making in our Equality and Diversity work.

In this edition of the magazine there are many patients who wanted to thank you for the lifesaving and changing care they have received.

Ultimately, our main aim is to provide the best possible care for patients, and so we should all be proud when we are able to help improve people’s lives.

Of course, things never stand still and we are always looking to improve further. As we move into the New Year, we will be refreshing our corporate strategy to reflect how we want to position the Trust for the future. Over the coming months we will be spending time asking as many people as possible both within the organisation

and outside for their thoughts and ideas on this.

Community rehabilitation programme gives heart patient a new lease of life A heart failure patient says she has a new lease of life thanks to our community cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Sarah Glossop has seen huge improvements in her physical and mental health as a result of the exercise-based programme, which is run by the Community Cardiac Rehabilitation team and takes place at the Graves Health and Sports Centre.

Sarah, 49, of Dore, Sheffield, has cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle which can affect its ability to pump blood around the body and lead to heart failure.

She was diagnosed after going to a late-effects clinic, which she attends as a result of having leukaemia as an 18-year-old. Tests revealed that her ejection fraction (a measure of how much blood is pumped by the heart with each contraction) was just 23%.

Sarah, who has a 15-year-old daughter and runs a dog walking business, said that the diagnosis affected her confidence so much that she thought she may have to give up her job.

She said: “I had thought that I was just run

down after a stressful year, but when I got the diagnosis it really devastated me. I was very down about it and I just could not function. I was terrified as I had read that people with my condition can die suddenly, and I was worried that could happen to me. I had no confidence in doing any exercise at all, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to work. I had completely lost my mojo.”

She was referred to the Heart Failure team, and subsequently the Community Cardiac Rehabilitation team.

After being visited at home by cardiac specialist nurses she was encouraged to take part in the programme of exercise classes, two times a week for six weeks. She was set the individual goal of increasing her confidence in doing exercise, and built up the amount she could do using gym equipment and circuit training.

“It has made such a massive difference to me.

I got my vitality back, I feel alive and really well. I feel back to my normal self. I am back to doing more dog walking, and I find that I have more stamina which helps, but more than that the fear that had been holding me back is gone.”

Community nurses spread the message thanks to Pet Shop Boys A group of community staff have created and performed an adapted version of the hit Pet Shop Boys song ‘It’s a Sin’ to raise awareness of pressure ulcer prevention.

The alternative version of the 1987 number one, retitled as ‘It’s SSKIN’, will be used as a resource for community health workers learning about pressure ulcer prevention, but it is hoped it may also be used more widely to raise awareness.

SSKIN is an acronym for a five step approach for pressure ulcer prevention: • Surface: ensure the correct mattress, cushion, heel protector etc is used • Skin inspection: early inspection means early detection • Keep moving: change position often • Incontinence/moisture: ensure the skin is kept clean and dry • Nutrition/hydration: ensure the right diet and appropriate fluids The words were written by Maria Levesley, a Nurse Lead in the Integrated Care Team, who is also the lead singer in the video.

She said: “We wanted to do something to promote awareness amongst out to staff. At our monthly pressure ulcer meeting we had the initial idea to do some kind of rap.

“I took the idea and started trying to put some words to songs. This song came to mind, as SSKIN fitted well in place of ‘a sin’, and it went from there.”

The MSK Bugbusters team was formed specifically to investigate infection rates and how they can be improved. The Bugbusters is a truly multidisciplinary team, with representation from staff working at all levels in the organisation. Pulling from staff groups such as nursing, medicine, domestic services, infection control, theatres, microbiology and therapy, the team focus on both the outpatient and inpatient aspects of patient care.

The nursing staff involved in the Surgical School team have developed improved information for patients who are undergoing major, life-changing surgery. Their work has helped to ensure that patients with a wide range of clinical needs have a better understanding of what to expect, which in turn helps them to tolerate post-operative care better and reduce the anxiety of patients and relatives.

The Volunteer Award

Winner: Sarah Coates, Patient Activities Co-ordinator, Spinal Injuries Unit Sarah is integral to the Spinal Injuries Unit. Spinal cord injury is life-changing for individuals and their families, and Sarah organises activities that can mean the world to patients and offer a far more enriching and positive experience of treatment and hospital.

Steven is a Patient Educator. He who underwent a pioneering stem cell treatment for multiple sclerosis, and has volunteered to speak about his journey as a patient at the Experience Medicine programme four times a year for the last four years.

He also attends The Health Care Apprentice programme to share his experiences as an inpatient.

Team of the Year Award Winner: Direct to scan overnight project team The direct to scan project involved bringing key people together from lots of different areas to significantly change practises to make a huge difference in access to urgent scanning out of hours in the stroke pathway. Sheffield Hyperacute stroke service has worked hard alongside radiology to deliver rapid access to emergency CT scanning to optimise diagnosis and treatment for stroke allowing rapid access to thrombectomy and thrombolysis.

Individual of the Year Award Winner: Clare Coyne, Lead, Project Choice, Learning & Development Clare has taken the lead on Project Choice, which enables young adults with disabilities to gain work experience and supported internships within the NHS. Clare is a nurse with 30 years’ experience, who moved into project and education work. Through this role, she has been able to develop Project Choice, which provides vulnerable young adults with invaluable work experience and the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of roles available within the NHS.

Alexa provides advice and support to paralysed patients who require long term mechanical ventilation. These patients are highly dependent and if unable to breathe without support of their ventilator are discharged to their home or community care with a ventilator. This is a huge adjustment for the patient themselves and their families.

Alexa’s role is to provide support and specialist advice to enable this to happen. This includes teaching the patients, staff, relatives and carers, and also liaising with external agencies. Alexa also goes above and beyond this role to enable her patients to experience things they would have done pre injury.

New appointments Dr Paul Whiting has been appointed as Chief Clinical Information Officer (CICO).

The most important aspect of the CCIO role will be engaging clinical staff in the development of our digital systems and Paul has a good track record of doing this in his role as Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety.

Andrew Jones has been appointed to the post of Facilities Director. Andrew has been Interim Facilities Director since the retirement of Kevin O’Regan earlier in 2019.

Dr Jonathan Bury, Consultant Histopathologist, has been appointed as Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine.

He will take over from Dr Branko Perunovic.

Thank you to Branko for his leadership, passion and commitment during his seven years in the role.

Long serving staff recognised At the Long Service Awards 461 colleagues from across community, acute and corporate areas were recognised for an eye watering combined 12,080 years loyal service to STH and our predecessor organisations. The awards were for either 20, 30 or 40 years’ service and we even had four colleagues who had had 50 years’ service.

Domestic Patricia Russell, was one colleague who received her 50 years’ service certificate. She closed the ceremony with a poem she wrote about the changing hospital environment and her love for colleagues at NGH.

Husband and wife have lives saved by same hospital team A Sheffield professor has thanked a cardiology team for saving the lives of both him and his wife in less than five years.

Professor Edward Winter began suffering with chest pains and was referred by his GP to the Cardiothoracic Centre at the Northern General Hospital.

After an initial consultation, Edward to underwent a coronary CT scan and an echocardiogram.

Edward said: “The morning after my CT scan I received a call to tell me that one of my coronary arteries was seriously narrowed and I needed to have a stent inserted.

"My stent was inserted the next day and I was discharged home the following morning.”

Dr Orme said: “The scan the previous day had identified that Edward’s left coronary artery was 95% blocked meaning that he had a very significant narrowing in that artery, which can lead to potentially fatal heart attacks.

“Once I heard he had also been having significant chest pain I immediately arranged to admit him to the Chesterman Unit so that we could treat his coronary narrowing with an angioplasty.”

An angioplasty involves using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery and inserting a short wire-mesh tube, called

a stent, into the artery to allow blood to flow more freely.

Edward had the stent successfully inserted and was able to be discharged home the following morning.

“Remarkably, within 48 hours of being literally a hair’s-width from catastrophe, I had been admitted, treated, discharged and was on a 20-minute walk to my local newsagents to buy our weekly lottery tickets. Those tickets were not winners, but I had just won the lottery of life.”

Edward wrote to Chief Executive Kirsten Major to express his appreciation for the way his life was saved. However, just four years earlier, Edward had written a very similar letter in appreciation of the same team for saving the life of his wife, Anne.

Anne had suffered a heart attack whilst the couple were gardening. She also had a stent fitted within only three hours of her heart attack, Anne was recovering on the ward.

72 hours after the incident, the couple were in London preparing to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace the next day.

Edward said: “Anne and I greatly appreciate the care we have had. We both have received excellent, life-saving care from the Consultants, the attentive nursing staff, and the whole team in coronary care.”

Brain surgery patient thanks staff after tying the knot A computer programmer who was able to marry his fiancée after being diagnosed with a brain tumour has thanked staff for his care.

An MRI scan revealed that in fact he had a brain tumour, and he was referred to the Royal Hallamshire for treatment.

With the support of family and friends, he decided to go ahead and have surgery the very next day.

Martin Milan, 44, of Doncaster, tied the knot with his fiancée Rachel just weeks after undergoing a major operation to remove as much of the tumour as possible.

He said: “My experience with the surgery has been absolutely incredible, and I have done incredibly well. Apparently upon completion of the surgery there could have been a need to have me retrained in how to walk and talk for example, but this simply hasn’t been needed.

I’m talking normally, thinking normally, and my walking is fine. In fact, I almost feel guilty about being off work because I feel ok.

Martin said: “Despite my illness, for now I just feel amazingly lucky, almost indecently lucky, to be where I am.

“We’ve had a frantic time sorting out for the wedding, was a wonderful day, and it showed that we were staying together no matter what we faced.”

Martin first realised something was wrong when he had vision problems at work, and his family persuaded him he should go to A&E.

When he was there he mixed up the hospital with a hotel, and was sent for a scan as doctors thought he may have suffered a stroke.

“The care has been fantastic, not only the surgery but also the nursing. I was absolutely blown away by it.”

Woman whose brain tumour doubled in size while pregnant says thank you for life-saving treatment A woman whose brain tumour doubled in size while she was expecting her son has thanked specialists 14 years after they saved both her and her son’s life.

Louise Houghton, 46, of Barnsley, posted a heartfelt Tweet thanking staff for “another precious year of life” after they successfully removed a brain tumour in August 2005.

Although it was 14 years ago, Louise said she would never forget the “life-saving work”.

Louise was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous growth which connects the inner ear with the brain, when she was 24 weeks pregnant with her son.

Within seven weeks the tumour had doubled in size and compacted against her brain stem.

Louise said: ““It was such a traumatic time, my son was in special care but I now faced life-saving brain surgery.

Her son Rhufon, was delivered nine weeks premature and weighing just 4lb 10ozs. Four days later,a team of surgeons at the Royal Hallamshire removed the tumour during a 15 hour operation.

“I’m still deaf in one ear, and struggle with tinnitus and balance problems, but it’s no exaggeration to say that without the teams at the Royal Hallamshire and Jessop Wing we wouldn’t be here today.”

New Dementia Practitioners Sheffield Hospitals Charity has launched a major appeal to fund improvements across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals that will help to make the experience of going into hospital better for people living with dementia.

To kick-start these changes, the Charity has funded three new Dementia Practitioners. The practitioners will examine a patient’s journey when they come to hospital, to identify where improvements can be made, so that they return home as healthy as possible. They will identify changes to care and ensure a coordinated approach across the Trust.

They will promote activities that keep patients mentally and physically active, facilitate specialist dementia training for staff and work on redeveloping the hospital environment to make spaces dementia friendly.

But to ensure a dementia friendly experience for all, the team say that they’ll need the support of colleagues from across the Trust, and are now calling on staff passionate about dementia care to nominate themselves as Dementia Champions — a voluntary role that will promote dementia friendly care on their ward and within their teams.

“Now I always say that I can do things” – supported intern Courtney shines A young person with a disability who undertook a supported internship at the Trust says the experience means that she now has the confidence to say that she can do new things.

Courtney Pashley, 18, who has mild cerebral palsy has gone on to secure a job after completing the internship programme.

As part of the programme she did placements in four areas – voluntary services, radiology, learning and development and clinical chemistry. She gained experience in administration and public facing roles, as well as learning how to book patients in for scans and use an electronic record system. In clinical chemistry she worked as part of the team that processes blood samples.

Courtney, of Sheffield, said: “I have gained lots of experience and confidence and improved my communication skills and my English skills, and I feel like I have really been accepted.

“In the past I would have said that I can’t do things, but that has changed because of the way I have been accepted and supported on the internship.

“Sometimes I used to worry about people looking at me or judging me, but I have never felt that way here. So now I always say that I can do things.”

Courtney impressed so much on her placement that she secured a job in Learning and Development.

“I want to keep learning and improving my skills, and I have been told there might be an opportunity to progress,” she said.

The supported internships offer young people aged 16 – 24 the opportunity to gain work experience while being mentored, and they also benefit from tuition on maths, English and employability skills.

Courtney heard about the opportunity at Sheffield College, where she was studying health and social care.

She is now a student representative who attends events and tells others about the programme and listens to any comments or suggestions.

Clare Coyne, who manages the supported internship programme, said: “Courtney is a prime example of someone who has been able to learn about her own skill set and develop her knowledge. She is approachable, confident and friendly and has an excellent attitude and 100% attendance.

“I can really see her going on to be a trainer or educator, because she has those skills and is developing all the time. It is fantastic that she now has the confidence to say that she can do things.”

He said: “We are delighted Sheffield Teaching Hospitals could assist the mountain rescue teams by allowing the Royal Hallamshire to be used to site a digital repeater station. The higher we are able to site the stations, the better the network coverage is.

The kit on top of the 21-storey hospital is part of a new digital radio network that is being set up by the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation.

The network is an upgrade from analogue equipment, which relies on line of sight and degrades over distance. The new system will allow clear communication across the whole of the Peak District.

“This means for Edale mountain rescue team and its neighbouring teams, communications within the Eastern Peak District and throughout South Yorkshire have been vastly improved.”

New ambulatory care facility enables patients to return home faster An ambulatory care room providing specialist care for patients with respiratory conditions has been officially opened at the Northern General Hospital.

The room in the Brearley wing was opened by patient David Offler, who was treated at the hospital for a collapsed lung and emphysema.

The room provides a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and dedicated recovery area, for respiratory and hepatology patients who may previously have had to stay in hospital for treatment.

The idea for the room came from the‘Give it a Go Week’ initiative. Using the room led to significant length of stay reductions and a business case was developed to provide a permanent facility.

Dr Imran Aslam, Respiratory Consultant, said: “Previously some of the patients who we are now able to treat in the ambulatory facility may have had to stay in hospital on a ward for five to seven days.

Former Sheffield Wednesday player who lost daughter to cervical cancer donates colposcope A former Sheffield Wednesday player has donated new equipment to Jessop Wing, paid for by money raised by his late daughter’s charity.

Willie Henderson, who played for the Owls between 1972-74, visited the Trust to present a new colposcope, a device used to examine a woman’s cervix and detect possible cervical cancer.

Willie’s daughter, Michelle, died from cervical cancer in 2012 on her 28th birthday, and Willie is continuing the work of the Michelle Henderson Cervical Cancer Trust, which she established before she passed away. £15,000 raised by the charity was used to pay for the colposcope, which features state of the art image capture technology that enables clinicians to better compare results of examinations and spot any abnormalities.

Willie, 75, said he wanted to make a donation to Sheffield because of the warm welcome he was given by the city and Wednesday fans.

“I hope that ultimately it will save lives,” said Willie, who also emphasised the importance of women attending their cervical screening (smear test).

Fiona Kew, Clinical Director for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology, said: “We are extremely grateful to Willie for this donation. The image capture technology this colposcope features enables clinicians to compare the results of examinations even better than before."

What behaviours do you want to see?

A few years ago, everyone who worked for the Trust was asked their views on what our values should be as an organisation but also as individual members of the STH team.

At the time we stopped short of exploring what types of behaviour we want to underpin those values. Not just the behaviours we

Trainee Nursing Associates complete their first year

Bank for Admin & Clerical staff coming soon

We welcomed our first Trainee Nursing Associates last year, and they are now celebrating the completion of their first year of training.

We are working with NHS Professionals to set up a bank for administrative and clerical staff.

The first group of trainees are due to qualify as Nursing Associates in January 2021.

Once completed the Trainee will receive a foundation degree and be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nursing Associate.

The bank will provide the opportunity for admin and clerical staff to work extra hours/ days in suitable roles either in their own department, or other departments within the Trust.

The role of the Nursing Associate role is to bridge the gap between the Clinical Support Worker and the Registered Nurse. They work alongside the healthcare team and support the Registered Nurse to deliver hands on care.

Transforming Jessop's bereavement suite Around 8000 babies are born each year at the Jessop Wing and for most parents this is a joyful occasion and a time to celebrate, but sadly some families have to deal with the devastating heartbreak of losing a child.

At such an emotionally challenging time, bereaved parents desperately need their own space. They need privacy to be together in a warm, comfortable and calming space.

Our next transformation project will focus on creating a new bereavement suite, where families can spend time in serene surroundings either indoors or outside in a private, peace garden.

The Jessop Wing Bereavement Service supports over 250 bereaved families each year following miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death.

Over the next 12 months, the Charity aims to raise £230,000 to redevelop the existing space currently used, to provide a more modern facility to meet the needs of families today.

The new bereavement suite will provide a modern and sensitive environment, where families can spend time with their baby, giving them an opportunity to create essential memories and provide a private space to support any religious, spiritual and cultural ceremonies.

Baby cameras will help parent baby bonding Thanks to supporters, new cameras will help prevent separation anxiety between parents and their babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Jessop Wing.

Having a seriously ill baby is a terrifying time for parents and it is not always possible to be with their babies whilst they’re in hospital. A new system, called ‘V-Create’ will allow hospital staff to send photographs and videos to parents who can’t be in hospital with their new-born.

Claire Howard, Matron in Neonatology, said: “V-Create will help to provide comfort to parents in difficult circumstances and promote family integrated care. This new system allows nursing staff to record a video and send it securely to parents who are outside the hospital and have access to a computer or smart phone.

We are very excited about this new innovation and its introduction to our ward to help families at what can be an emotional and challenging time.”
