Celebrating 10 years of kidney care for patients On 26 March, the Renal Unit ward 32 celebrated a decade of providing renal dialysis for the people of South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire.

James Fenwick, a Doncaster resident, said: “Throughout the past decade I have been a user of the Renal Unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and was one of the first patients to stay on the ward.

Having had a kidney transplant and then gone into rejection, for the past two years I have routinely gone through dialysis and I can’t thank the staff enough for their help and support during this difficult time.

“I CAN’T THANK THE STAFF ENOUGH FOR THEIR HELP AND SUPPORT DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.” The Department of Renal Medicine at Doncaster Royal Infirmary first opened its doors to patients with kidney disease on 26 March 2007, as a 12 bed inpatient ward, adding an outpatient clinic in July of the same year. an acute haemodialysis area caring for over 2,000 people.

“Eventually another donor was found and a kidney kindly donated anonymously. I can’t thank this person enough, whoever they are, as well as the doctors and nurses who cared for me at both Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and also those at Northern General Hospital who performed my transplant.”

International recognition for cardiac service Our cardiac team has been awarded an internationally recognised accreditation by the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE).

This accolade acknowledges the expertise and skills of staff which meet the required standards set by the BSE. This means a high quality cardiac ultrasound scanning service for the people of Doncaster, Bassetlaw and beyond.

Hospital tour calms children’s anxieties

Howard Briggs, Principal Clinical Physiologist in the department, said: “This is a tremendous achievement by all staff involved and I want to thank the team for their hard work in securing this award once again. We strive to ensure that we have the best service possible for the patients we serve and this award is a marker of such quality.”

Pupils from a special educational needs school visited Doncaster Royal Infirmary to get a feel of what it is like being in hospital to help ease any worries they may have about visiting as a patient.

The trip was arranged as part of Heatherwood School’s ‘health services’ project, with four students attending to experience admission, seeing the doctor, the wards and finally being discharged.

Samantha Lee, Head of Sixth Form at Heatherwood School, said: “The children really took a lot away from the visit. Some of them have been in hospital before and it was nice for them to see it as a place that they didn’t

New emergency training course comes to Doncaster A new emergency ultrasound training course was held at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, run by one of our own consultants.

Dr Juan Ballesteros, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, delivered the first Level 1 Ultrasound course at the hospital to 16 consultants and senior doctors from Doncaster and other hospitals across the north of England.

Emergency ultrasound is used to quickly diagnose injuries or conditions in emergency situations. They are often used when other diagnostic tests would take too long or when they could put the patient at more risk, either through transportation or radiation.

Juan is a member of Northern Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (NEMUS) a group of clinicians and educators who deliver high quality ultrasound training, specialising in emergency and critical care.

“WE’VE HAD EXCELLENT FEEDBACK FROM ALL DELEGATES.” Juan said: “The course ran very well over the two days and we’ve had excellent feedback from all delegates who are now on their way to have their Level 1 competence signed off by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine within the next few months.

“Emergency ultrasound is critically important to the delivery of high quality emergency medicine and I’m very happy to have been

able to bring the course to Doncaster which would have been impossible without the support of an excellent Faculty and the Education Centre Team.”

Juan and his team are planning to run the course twice a year and develop their internal Faculty to expand to Level 2 courses in the future.

AAA screening clinics reach local communities The AAA team have been out and about in our local communities screening older men for a potentially life threatening condition.

“IT’S PARAMOUNT THAT MEN AGED 65 AND OVER HAVE THE SCREENING – IT CAN BE A LIFE SAVER.” Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, also called AAAs, has no signs or symptoms, predominantly affecting men over the age of 65. It occurs when the aorta, the main blood vessel which runs from the heart, becomes weak and expands. When this happens, the aorta may rupture, leading to internal bleeding, and could potentially be fatal. Around 3,000 men die each year from ruptured AAAs.

New Lodge Club and Community Shop hosts lifesaving screening clinic

The AAA screening team joined forces with Doncaster Rovers and Club Community Foundation to host a

series of pilot AAA screening clinics to help protect their older male fans.

Club Doncaster Foundations Health and Wellbeing Officer, Nick Gillott, said: “Promoting the AAA Screening Programme to our fans is something we as a Foundation and Club are very passionate about in order to keep them healthy. I am aware that AAAs can have no signs or symptoms so it’s paramount that men aged 65 and over have the screening – it can be a life saver.”

Men in their 65 year are invited for AAA screening by letter, but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment on 01709 649100 or by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa@nhs.net For more information on AAAs, visit: http:www//aaa.dbh.nhs.uk/

Fourteen men jumped on board the health bus at New Lodge Club and were screened for this symptomless yet potentially fatal condition.

New Lodge Working Men’s Committee member, Tommy Parkin, was among the first to be screened, he said: “It is brilliant that they have brought the screening clinic to the club making it even easier for men in the area to be screened.

I’ve had my AAA screening and would strongly urge other men to do so too. I got the all clear so everything is fine and that’s one less thing to worry about.”

Innovative doctor develops app to prevent blindness One of our doctors who specialises in the treatment of eye disorders, has developed an innovative free app that alerts primary care professionals to eye conditions, which if left untreated could lead to blindness.

Mr Gerard Jayamanne, Consultant Ophthalmologist, has designed the ‘Red Eye Red Flags’ app to help GPs, practice nurses, emergency care physicians and opticians to spot the warning signs of the condition. The new app identifies symptoms which should prompt primary care professionals to make urgent referrals to an eye specialist for treatment.

Symptoms of serious red eye conditions can include reduced vision, pain and photophobia (sensitivity to light), which can cause loss of sight if treatment is not started promptly.

Mr Jayamanne said: “Not all red eye conditions are serious but some can be sight threatening if not managed promptly.

The app provides GPs and other primary care professionals with a means to accurately assess patients presenting with the condition and triggers a referral into the eye service.”

1,000 days free of pressure ulcers on the Mallard Ward The Mallard Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary celebrated a landmark of 1,000 days without a serious, hospital-acquired, pressure ulcer.

The ward, which cares for people living with delirium and dementia, reached this milestone due to the hard work and dedication of its staff to continually strive to improve the quality of care for their patients.

Pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores develop when the skin and underlying tissue becomes damaged usually from being confined to lying in a bed or sitting for long periods of time.

Led by Dr Rod Kersh, Consultant in Holistic and Person-centred Medicine for Older People, ward staff worked closely with the Skin Integrity Team and studied every part of pressure ulcer development.

They identified the risks of their patients getting a sore and introduced new ways of working and awareness.

An important part of this success is the ward’s open visiting times for relatives and carers to visit at any time of the day or night. Patients are encouraged to move away from their beds and enjoy eating their meals in the Mallard Ward’s dining area.

Rod said: “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this landmark. I am very proud of the team who have strived with such passion to constantly enhance the care and prevent these painful pressure ulcers. Each day, as a team, we aspire to do better than the one before, believing that we can always improve and for that I thank them for such dedication.

“Now that we’ve reached 1,000 days it is very much business as usual and we are already looking ahead to 2,000 days with no serious, hospital-acquired, pressure ulcers on the ward.”

Spring cleaning our hospitals With thousands of people visiting our hospitals every day, it’s not surprising that the litter can build up.

In March we showed our commitment to tidy up our hospitals and joined the Great British Spring Clean, a campaign run by Keep Britain Tidy.

We held litter picking events and a declutter day to give our hospitals a spring clean.

Earlier this year we appointed Richard Parker as our new Chief Executive.

Richard’s appointment was given the seal of approval by the Board of Governors, having been selected from a strong field of shortlisted candidates following a national recruitment process led by the NHS Leadership Academy.

Working within the NHS for over 30 years, Richard has served as our Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality since October 2013. In this role, he has overseen significant improvements to our overall performance, helping to significantly develop the quality of clinical services.

Spending almost his entire career within South Yorkshire, Richard qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1985, subsequently specialising in intensive care at Sheffield Northern General Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary. He joined, what was, Doncaster and Montagu Hospitals in 1992 as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Intensive Care and became Assistant Associate Manager of Anaesthetics and Theatre Services.

“IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF TEAM DBTH OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS AND I LOOK FORWARD TO LEADING THE TRUST INTO AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER AS A TEACHING HOSPITAL.” Later, he worked in senior nursing and clinical management roles at Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital. In 2002, Richard was appointed as Director of Nursing for Critical Care, Anaesthesia and Operating Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, becoming Deputy Chief Nurse in 2005 before rising to the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2013.

Speaking about his appointment, Richard said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed Chief Executive. It has been a pleasure to have been a part of Team DBTH over the past four years and I look forward to leading the Trust into, what promises to be, an exciting new chapter as a teaching hospital.

“As the Director of Nursing, my focus has been on ensuring that we deliver safe, effective and quality services for the people of Doncaster, Bassetlaw and beyond, and this will continue as I assume the wider responsibilities of Chief Executive.”

Richard succeeds our previous Chief Executive, Mike Pinkerton, who retired in January 2017 having led the organisation for four years.

Hospital care for children at Bassetlaw As a parent and someone who lives in the Bassetlaw area, I know how worrying it can be when your child suddenly takes ill, during the day or at night.

We have had to make changes to the Children’s Ward at Bassetlaw Hospital due to difficulties in recruiting the number of specialist children’s nurses needed to run the service overnight, however the skilled nurses we do have are extremely dedicated.

Since changing the opening hours of the ward to 8.00am to 10.00pm every day, alongside the wider team, our skilled nurses have worked tirelessly to ensure youngsters have the best service possible and are cared for appropriately.

Despite the changes, Bassetlaw Hospital is still the place to take your child if you need urgent medical help, and ambulances will still come here. We have all of the necessary skills within the Emergency Department to offer treatment, and if required, our specialist children’s doctors can be called upon to offer expert advice or treatment at any time.

• The Children’s Ward is open seven days a week, from 8.00am to 10.00pm

We have a consultant paediatrician onsite 24/7, from 7.00pm children will not be admitted to the ward overnight and any child needing overnight observation is transferred to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

As always Bassetlaw Hospital also continues to care for expectant mothers, and our commitment to delivering a maternity service remains strong, now and in the future.

Our team work very hard to make sure this experience is as comfortable and seamless as possible, and if parents encounter any issues, we ask that they speak to a member of staff or contact the Trust directly.

Have these changes been made for financial reasons?

No, it is based on safety and is not a financial decision.

Can Doncaster Royal Infirmary cope with the influx of patients from Bassetlaw?

Yes, there is sufficient bed capacity and no patient has been transferred from Doncaster Royal Infirmary for anything other than medical reasons, such as severity of condition which requires the expertise of Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Is this permanent?

If we can safely and fully staff the ward, we will re-open to overnight admissions.

But we do not anticipate this happening in the short term. We have been actively targeting the paediatric nursing cohort graduates who will qualify in September through promotions, open days and recruitment fairs. We will review the position in October.

Top marks for library service Our Knowledge and Library Service has achieved a perfect score of 100 per cent for Health Education England’s (HEE) annual NHS library assessment.

Each year NHS libraries are assessed against national standards as detailed in the NHS Library Quality Assurance Framework. Recognising the excellent provision the organisation has to offer, HEE awarded the Trust top marks, one of only five services in the north of England to achieve such a feat.

Their sheer determination to strive for excellence is second to none. Protecting patients from #PJParalysis We’ve all had days when we are feeling a bit under the weather and more often than not if we get up and get dressed for the day we start to feel a little better.

A selection of the Creative Breakfast club

Creative Breakfast discovering the new normal Our staff have creative and innovative ideas every day to improve patient care and experience, however capturing those ideas and putting them in to practice can be a challenge in a busy teaching hospital.

But the word is spreading about a hot new forum called the Creative Breakfast, hosted by Rod Kersh, Consultant in Holistic and Person-Centred Medicine for Older People.

Once a month at 8.00am staff have been gathering together in the Education Centre to share their creative thoughts, notions and discuss hitches and glitches to make the care for patients even better.

It’s certainly proving a hit with a wide range of staff enjoying the relaxed and friendly early morning creative conversations.

So far the collection of the ideas served up on the great DBTH creative breakfast menu include: • Developing the use of QR codes as part of a training tool in hospital to signpost to websites without typing the URL or going through Google • Changing the culture for a 21st century hospital where patients are dressed in clothes, wherever possible, during the day – very important for patient safety reducing falls, pressure ulcers and helping patients retain their independence

The same can apply to patients in hospital.

That’s why we are supporting the national #endPJparaplysis and encouraging patients to get up, change out of their pyjamas (PJs) and into their own clothes. Doing this and spending less time in bed gives patients’ better mobility, independence and aids a speedier recovery.

For our older patients being in a hospital bed longer than they need can cause up to five per cent loss of their muscle strength each day. Over a 10 day period their muscles can age by up to 10 years just from being in bed.

Simple things like encouraging patients to wake up, change into their day clothes and move around the ward, eat their meals out of bed in a dining area, use the toilet instead of a commode and generally participate in normal life, as much as possible, can pay dividends for maintaining their independence. #endPJparalysis is part of our commitment to person centred care and recognises the importance of giving all our patients a comforting and personal experience. We’ve also signed up to John’s Campaign and welcome carers to visit their loved ones in hospital anytime of the day or night.

• Setting up of a patient clothes store to encourage patients to change out of their pyjamas. Currently about 95 per cent of patients’ time in hospital is spent lying down which can have a harmful effect on their health.

• Involving students and new starters in quality improvement • Offering patients activities to aid recovery • Creating social environments for patients.

Rod said: “We are all proud of the work we do in hospital to improve patient safety, experience and quality of care. We now need to focus on supporting our patients to recover from an illness or injury and regain their independence as quickly as possible. The creative breakfast helps us to think outside the box, innovate, challenge, question, and discover the new normal.”

Introducing Suzy our new Chair of the Board On the 1 January we welcomed Suzy Brain England OBE as our new Chair of the Board. She took time out from her busy schedule to tell us more about herself and her plans for the Trust.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

I have had a wonderful career journey, gained many skills and met some very interesting people along the way. When I worked at the London Daily News I had to deal with owner Robert Maxwell. As the Chair of the Institute of Directors in Yorkshire, I hosted a meeting with David Cameron, former PM, and business leaders. I was even pictured wearing a hard hat at the opening of the new health and social care centres in Doncaster with Ed Miliband.

When I was the Managing Director of The Earth Centre in Conisbrough, Caroline Flint MP used to call in from time to time.

What was your reaction to receiving your OBE honour?

The letter arrived on a Saturday morning in July. When I read it, I gasped and a tear came to my eye. My mother had died quite young and she would have been very proud. It was a great experience going to the Palace and collecting my OBE from Prince Charles. He was very nice and asked me questions about my scrutiny role for the Department for Work and Pensions for which I had been awarded the honour. It was indeed my proudest moment. My family and friends used it as an excuse for us to party from July until the ceremony in November!

Tell us more about your mentoring and counselling experience and how it will form your leadership approach as our new Chair of the Board I would describe the mentoring process as “putting an old head on young shoulders.�

In other words my years of experience with people and organisations can be shared with others who are at an earlier stage in their career.

Mentoring can be about discussing training and development needs to help someone achieve their career aspirations. It can also be about having a confidential and private shoulder to cry on when faced with challenges at work or with other people, and to find the best way forward to solve problems. It has not been unusual for clients to seek advice to gain a promotion and then return for a few sessions when they are ready to take on their next role.

As Chair I will use my active listening skills and support anyone and the organisation to resolve any problems.

What drew you to the role of Chair at DBTH? My affection for the area has arisen from my days at The Earth Centre and from supporting the construction of new primary care centres under the LIFT scheme.

Gaining teaching hospital status puts the Trust head and shoulders above the rest. I would thoroughly recommend it as a great place to work in and be cared for. It is going to be an exciting place in the coming years as it grows and develops to meet the needs of its patients and career aspirations of its staff.

We live in a beautiful country and Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live campaign encourages people to care for parks, beaches and local streets. Urging owners to clean up after their dogs is an important part of this. Fly tipping, smoking and chewing gum waste is becoming a big problem for green spaces and inner city areas alike. The Keep Britain Tidy team work hard to find solutions to these ever-present problems.

In March the Trust joined the many groups, people and organisations for the Great British Spring Clean to help tidy up our hospital sites. This is something that I am very passionate about.

Personally, I have always been a keen recycler.

Every time I visit the local park, I pick up plastic bottles and sweet wrappers and put them in the bin, so it made perfect sense to join the Keep Britain Tidy team.

I know it will take some time to get round everyone because I also have to visit external stakeholders in my role, but I am happy to get the invitations!

What do you feel are the biggest challenges of your role?

In most of the organisations I have worked for the pressure is the same – having to figure out how to do more for less while keeping up the quality. I would like us to do as much as we can to promote public health messages so that more people can care for themselves.

I would also like us to make better use of technology, for example talking to patients on the phone or using video technology for some of our follow up appointments. We have video conferencing in our board rooms and we are looking at how this can be used more effectively.

As with other trusts nationally, we have challenges such as the need to fill vacancies and to reduce the cost of agency staff. We need to work more closely with all parts of the health and social care economy across South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire so that together we can find the best sustainable way ahead for patients.

What are the first impressions of our hospitals and staff?

Everyone has been very welcoming. I love the energy there is about the place. Everyone is committed to doing a great job and they have an eye for continually looking at better ways of doing things. The food in the dining rooms is great – I go for the roast each day when I

Research Fellow inspires next generation of researchers A specialist physiotherapist Julie Bury has taken up a new role as Research Fellow to complement our clinical research activities and to help develop the next generation of researchers.

Julie, who recently completed her Master of Science (MSc) degree in Clinical Research, has developed a keen interest in research.

Speaking of her appointment Julie said: “This is an exciting opportunity not only for me, but for the Trust and the patients we serve. I have been meeting with staff to discuss their research ambitions and to offer my support to help make them happen.

“THIS IS AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY NOT ONLY FOR ME, BUT FOR THE TRUST AND THE PATIENTS WE SERVE.” “Having a research-intensive Teaching Hospital is among one of the best assets that a community can have. It nurturers the next generation of researchers which is vitally important to the future of patient health care and attracts potential staff with an emerging reputation for innovative research.”

As a research fellow Julie provides support to staff across all healthcare professions with their independent research activities. She is working collaboratively with Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield to increase and grow the research opportunities for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals’ staff and patients.

Julie is also involved in establishing a vibrant clinical academic internship programme in partnership with Health Education England and National Institute for Health Research. The aim of this scheme is to support staff who want to develop their NHS careers that combine clinical research with continued clinical practice.

How clinical research helped Pamela become independent Earlier this year Pamela Anderson who has Lupus spoke about her experiences of being on the Tulip clinical study at the Trust’s annual Research and Development conference.

Lupus is a condition where the immune system starts attacking healthy cells and tissue of any part of the body, including the kidneys, brain or central nervous system, blood and blood vessels, skin, lungs, heart, and joints.

The Tulip Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) clinical trial studies whether the medication Anitfrolumab or placebo in combination with a patient’s current lupus treatment is effective in reducing the severity of their symptoms.

“I AM PLEASED THAT I PARTICIPATED ON THIS TRIAL AND THE IMPROVEMENTS HAVE MADE SUCH A DIFFERENCE TO ME PERSONALLY HELPING ME TO BECOME INDEPENDENT.” The condition varies from person-toperson and in Pamela’s case her lupus resulted in her being housebound and in the need of a carer.

Pamela recalls: “I was under the care of Dr Chee-Seng Yee, Consultant Rheumatologist, and he mentioned that I was eligible for the SLE Tulip trial and

asked if I would be interested in taking part. I used to be a nurse practitioner and know how important research is to test new investigational drugs. I was aware of potential side effects and discussed everything with my family and GP and we all agreed that taking part would do no harm.

“I started on the original Tulip SLE trial in September 2015 which at that time was the first one in the UK and Europe.

“I started to experience ulcers, increased pain, mouth and nasal sores and hair loss, but persevered for future patients.

I thought if it meant improvements in symptoms for other people then it would be worth it.

“It was only when the pain got really bad that I talked to Dr Yee. He said if there was no improvement after three months I would go onto the extended trial.

“After changing the combination of the medication the difference was much better. I could cope with the pain and in the last month I have had no hair loss which is good. I can manage the stairs better now and my carer just helps with socialisation unless I have a flare up of my Fibromyalgia.

“To get an improvement is a big thing. I am pleased that I participated on this trial and the improvements have made such a difference to me personally helping me to become independent.”

The Tulip SLE trial was a year trial with the option of crossing over to the long term extension trial. For Pamela this option came in November 2016. Both trials are double blinded which means that there is no way of telling if Pamela is receiving the study drug.

Skin masterclass launched Our Skin Integrity team has come up with an innovative approach to staff training and designed and launched a novel new skin ‘masterclass’ that equips ward staff with the skill and know-how to treat serious wounds.

Central to the masterclass is an interactive tutorial that teaches staff to perform a therapy technique called Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. Staff practice and hone their practical skills on fruit to simulate the type of complex abrasions they will be treating.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy helps to speed up skin healing, while relieving pain and discomfort for patients. It works by creating a vacuum through a sealed dressing placed over the sore. Once applied, this draws out any fluid from the injury and increases blood flow to the area to help both drain and clean the area.

My apprenticeship experience

Update from Richard Reflecting on the past year, I can honestly say that it has been one of the most challenging in the Trust’s history.

Looking for a rewarding and interesting career, then the NHS has lots of apprenticeships to choose from.

Despite this, we have continued to focus on improving our performance, for the benefit of our patients, while also making significant progress with our financial position. Since April 2016, we have delivered savings of around £11.9million, against an original target of £11million.

Shaunna TurnerFlynn is an Apprentice Medical Laboratory Assistant, and shares her experience of being an apprentice at DBTH.

At the year-end (31 March 2017) our financial position is a £6.7million deficit.

This is significantly ahead of our original (a deficit of £24.1million) and revised forecasts (a deficit of £17.1million), and reflects additional funding we received from NHS Improvement for maintaining our financial and operational plans and performance through the financial year.

When going through my last year of sixth form, I decided that university wasn’t the most appropriate path for me to take. As I had an interest in healthcare science, I searched the NHS jobs website for apprenticeships available in my area.

Only having held two part time jobs in the past, with no formal interview needed, facing three important people from within the Pathology department was very nerve wracking to say the least! Putting me at ease, I was politely welcomed and made to feel as comfortable as possible. The interview lasted around 20 minutes and, happily, I was told I had been successful later that evening.

We will continue to work tirelessly to achieve this, while keeping a focus on engaging supporting our teams to deliver excellent, effective and efficient care for the people of Doncaster, Bassetlaw and beyond.

My first week began around three months later and, although extremely nervous, I was excited. The first few days consisted mostly of filling out necessary forms and documents, being inducted into the safety procedures of certain areas and getting a feel for the whole department. Everybody within Pathology made me feel extremely welcome, were very approachable and always happy to help with any issues or problems.

I considered myself very fortunate to be working within an actual hospital laboratory at the age of 18, gaining some real work experience while working towards a qualification, and all the while getting paid for it. I felt very excited and privileged to be chosen for the position.

I have attended Sheffield College every Tuesday since the beginning of the apprenticeship and the BTEC and NVQ qualifications are running as smoothly as possible. The apprenticeship has made me feel like an actual employee within the department and has opened my eyes and mind to what actual full time employment is like.

I would highly recommend to anyone unsure about what to do next after school to consider and research into NHS apprenticeships because, as I have noticed within the little time of being here, work experience can be just as important as qualifications. Do not feel pressured into taking the same university route as most people around you, consider all of your options, and like me, you might find something you love!

Many of us assume we need to join a gym, take up running or join a sports team to get active.

But just 10 minutes of brisk walking is all we need to get our blood pumping, improve our mood, and reduce our risk of long-term health conditions.

Over the past few decades, we’ve become much less physically active – and use less energy in our everyday lives than we should. Thankfully, we’re starting to realise how this is affecting our health and wellbeing with health experts now viewing inactivity as at least as concerning as smoking.

Walking is great for keeping our minds healthy in the long-term too. This is because when we walk, just like when we do any kind of exercise, our brains release chemicals that make us feel good. That means walking can help us cope with things like depression, stress and anxiety.

Our Health and Wellbeing Lead has won NHS Employers ‘Flu Fighter Champion’ award for 2016.

Helen Houghton received the accolade at the annual Flu Fighter Awards for her role directing our flu vaccination efforts, helping to protect both staff and patients from flu.

Thanks to her leadership, in just two months, the flu buster team managed to vaccinate over 75 per cent (that’s over 3,500) of our frontline healthcare workers against flu, becoming the first acute Trust in the country to do so.

Helen said: “I am delighted to have been named Flu Fighter Champion of the year. We have worked incredibly hard as a Health and Wellbeing Team, as well as an organisation, to ensure that we vaccinated as many front line staff as possible. It’s fantastic to be recognised in this way and this is an award I share with every single member of the Trust who got their jab, protected their patients and took the fight to flu!”

Here at the Trust we’re taking positive action for the health and wellbeing of our staff, we have introduced a series of short health walks for staff to help increase their physical activity levels. Led by the Trust’s own trained Walk Leaders, made up of staff volunteers, there are two lunchtime health walks and two Park and Strides.

Understanding patients’ wishes at the end of life We’ve launched Me and My Plan which gives terminally ill patients more control over their care at the end of their lives.

It’s a specially designed folder which contains a record of the patient’s care choices, preferences and can be taken with them to appointments or if they are admitted to a hospital or hospice.

It is part of our commitment to person-centred care which recognises the importance of providing a comforting and personal experience to

all patients, particularly those nearing the end of their lives.

Charity donation remaps Dementia care in hospital An award-winning charity which designs and makes custom equipment to help disabled people live more independently has made an unusual donation to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Brian Downes, Chairman of Remap, said: “Everything we create is made with the user in mind and in this case we tested many fibres and fabrics to find the most suitable one to make the jigsaws from. It’s great to know that every time we deliver a creation, someone is able to achieve something or get involved in an activity they enjoy doing that would have been otherwise impossible before.”

The jigsaws are part of our commitment to person-centred care which recognises the importance of providing a comforting and positive experience to vulnerable patients which can help speed up their recovery.

Bethany Cotton, Dementia Education Lead, said: “I want to thank everyone who helped us raise funds for this important team. In total we managed to raise £250, and with a kind donation from Angie, who personally donated £100 from her business Ace Social Care, and a further £80 in memory of her (I-r): Amie Kay; Angie Kay and father, adding to funds collected Bethany Cotton during the bake sale.

“The Enhanced Care Team performs a crucial role in ensuring that we offer the best possible care for our most vulnerable visitors.

The money will go towards buying equipment and activities to help occupy patients while they are in hospital.”

The Riley School of Dance

Worksop man completes giant jigsaw for local hospital Local fundraiser Darren Hughes raised money to buy toys and games for the Children’s Ward at Bassetlaw Hospital by creating a giant 5,000 piece jigsaw.

The jigsaw, which is a cartoon of all the states in the USA, took Darren four weeks to complete. Each piece was sold off for a £1.00 and raised over £400 thanks to the generosity of the local community and customers of his business Shed Shed Shed.

Darren said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project, with the money raised so far I have been able to purchase toys and games for the ward and will continue to fundraise until I reach my overall target of £5,000.

Hospital staff do so much for local families and this is my way of giving something back.”

Doncaster dance school’s gift of £1,450 for Breast Unit Hard work has paid off for the Riley School of Dance as their three spectacular shows raised an amazing £1,450 for the Jasmine Centre at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Over 100 pupils aged 3 to 18 years took part in the shows held at CAST in Doncaster last July.

Pauline Foulstone, Breast Services Lead Practitioner at the Trust said: “We can’t thank the Riley School of Dance enough for their efforts. The money they have generously raised will be put towards up to date equipment which will improve outcomes for all our breast patients attending theatre.”

Breast screening is offered every three years to all women aged 50 to 70, with some women being called up as early as 47 through a pilot scheme.

The Health and Care of Young People Committee visited the Orthotic Department to see the manufacture of precision, custom-made foot orthotics for young people. They also received an update on paediatric services across the Trust.

History Matters

A Tradition of Teaching The news that the Trust is now officially recognised as a Teaching Hospital is, of course, greatly to our credit.

It must not be forgotten that teaching and training have been a part of our work for many years, as the pictures here show. A Nurse Training School was established at Doncaster Royal Infirmary in 1925 and the first Doncaster-trained nurse to sit the State Final Examination gained her State Registration in 1927. A Preliminary Training School for Nurses was opened on 1 January 1944.

Montagu Hospital’s Nurse Training Scheme was established in 1938, and was later combined with that of Rotherham Hospital Management Committee.
