Good Health: A Pictorial Celebration To celebrate 70 years of the NHS and 150 years of Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Garry Swann, the Trust Archivist, has produced a book which chronicles the organisation from its humble beginnings in the 19th century to the achievement of ‘Teaching Hospital’ status in 2017.

The limited edition book is on sale now for £6.99 to raise money for DBTH Charity and is the perfect stocking filler.

Garry Swann, former Medical Photographer has used his extensive knowledge and access to the hospitals’ archives to curate over 100 pages filled with images and photographs from yesteryear. All of our hospitals at Bassetlaw, Doncaster, Mexborough and Retford have their own sections, with a short history detailing their growth and development.

The perfect Christmas gift

Our formal partnership with Hall Cross academy Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) entered into a formal partnership with Hall Cross Academy in October 2018, making the latter a ‘Foundation School in Health’.

One of the first agreements of its kind in the country, the partnership will see the local NHS provider and school working closely together, further developing opportunities for pupils wishing to pursue a career in the health service.

Dr Alasdair Strachan, Director of Education and Consultant Anaesthetist at the Trust, said: “This is a fantastic development not only locally but also for the wider NHS. By working closely with our partners at Hall Cross Academy we will not only further increase opportunities for students to embark on a hugely rewarding career in health, but also lay a promising and skilled foundation for the future of our local hospitals.”

With increasingly complex patient-need and an ever-expanding population, it is anticipated that the NHS will face further workforce demands in the near future. In order to address this challenge locally, DBTH and Hall Cross Academy are looking at innovative ways in which to support students as they look towards job prospects past the age of 16.

By becoming a Foundation School in Health, it means the central Doncaster school will benefit from increased involvement from health professionals. This will include work experience and internships, further advice and information from experienced medics and clinicians, as well as the appointment of ‘Careers Champions’ within the local hospitals.

By partnering with Hall Cross Academy, recently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, the Trust hopes to further its commitment to providing the best learning experience for future NHS workers, across a variety of roles and professions.

As a school, it is our ambition, above all else, to ensure that our pupils are given the best possible education which will prepare them for a fulfilling and fruitful career, whatever it is they choose to pursue.

“I believe as a Foundation School for Health, we will be able to draw on the advice, expertise and guidance of the local NHS, creating and illuminating a clear and engaging pathway for pupils to follow in order to become a nurse, doctor or any other of the myriad opportunities in the health service. This is an incredibly exciting time, and, with the Trust, we cannot wait to get started.”

The partnership formally commenced on 19 October, when the school and Trust came together in an official ceremony.

DBTH reaches national flu vaccination target in record time Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has officially vaccinated 75 per cent of their clinicians against the flu, administering over 3,800 vaccines to staff directly involved in patient care, 500 more than last year and ten days sooner.

The Trust, which runs three main hospitals in the region as well as outpatient services at various community sites, is believed to be amongst the fastest performing NHS providers in the country in achieving the 75 per cent vaccination rate, as data is still being analysed

by NHS Employers.

The Trust’s flu campaign has been spearheaded by a dedicated team of vaccinators made up of Occupational Health and Wellbeing practitioners and supported by hospital clinicians of all grades and levels, including Chief Executive, and registered nurse, Richard Parker, as well as Moira Hardy, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, both of whom administered the vaccines to members of staff.

The vaccination team have worked tirelessly visiting wards and departments in order to give medics and clinicians easy access to the vaccine, while providing special drop-in sessions for weekend workers and night staff.

This ‘all hands on deck’ model, which has proven so effective over the past number of years, has seen success again with the Trust hitting the target in record time.

So popular was this year’s campaign that the Trust ran out of jabs after just three days, when more than 1,600 clinicians opted to get their vaccination. In all, when stocks were available, the team managed to reach the national target of 75 per cent in just 21 days, 38 per cent faster than last year’s efforts. In order to help promote the availability of the jab, each year the Trust takes on cinematic inspiration, with this year’s flu vaccination campaign nodding towards Disney Pixar’s ‘The Incredibles’.

Dubbed the ‘Flucredibles’, vaccinators adopted a decidedly heroic posture, complete with face masks and their own costumes, making them highly recognisable within the Trust.

Moira said: “This has been a truly remarkable achievement for members of Team DBTH and something which outlines the dedication we have, as a Trust, to ensure we protect our patients. The enthusiasm for this year’s flu campaign has far outstripped our, already high, expectations and I want to thank everyone involved, particularly our vaccination team who have been tireless in their efforts.”

The Trust will continue to vaccinate its patientfacing workforce as well as offering the vaccine to non-frontline staff, to further reduce the risk of hospital patients contracting flu this winter.

Visitors can also help in the fight against flu and other winter illnesses by not coming to the Trust to see relatives and friends in hospital if they have cold symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, cough, body aches and fatigue.

Flu can cause a range of illnesses from mild to severe, even among healthy people. People aged 65 and over, pregnant women, anyone with diabetes, chest or heart conditions and others in at-risk groups are advised to ask their GP about having the flu vaccine.

She often stays after hours in order to ensure that all clinic work is completed. Likewise, if a visitor is experiencing anxiety, Pauline will readily be on hand to provide reassurance and the patients clearly value her as a source of comfort. Pauline is a true credit to Team DBTH.

Su was approached to take part in a national research project to investigate the effectiveness of thumb splints. As part of the project, Su was required to recruit at least two patients a month to the trial. To date, she has recruited 22 patients and is the first DBTH Occupational Therapist to be involved in research at this level. Su is keen to encourage others to develop research skills and contribute to studies.

Richard was appointed to manage a new Data Quality Toll at the Trust. His target was to achieve an additional ÂŁ25k per month as part of the Maximising Income project. Richard has exceeded the target each month and has quickly refined the process working closely with staff members in other departments. He has provided demonstrations of the tool to other NHS trusts at the Regional Clinical Coding Managers Forum and several trusts have since visited him so he can show them the tool in greater detail.

Dr Subedi has been instrumental in starting CESR training in the Emergency Department at DRI. This has attracted good doctors to join the training at all levels, as well as experienced consultants who help run the department across sites. End of Life Care Specialist Nurse

Nominated by a member of the public, Denise makes an incredible difference for those in her care and especially their relatives. She supported a patient through a long period of illness, she was eventually put in the difficult position of having to let them go home to pass away peacefully. Denise kept in touch with the family throughout, taking the time to explain the patient’s wishes to them and liaise with other services on their behalf. She treated everyone with the utmost warmth and compassion.

Working with the end of life team, DBTH’s newly introduced Butterfly Volunteers have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, recognition in the local press and even attention from a local MP. Specially trained to provide companionship and support to those in the last days of their life, they demonstrate an unparalleled sense of empathy and bravery and give solace to friends and relatives, who can feel assured that their loved ones are not scared or alone. In just over a year, 112 patients have already benefited from their support.

The 100 Day Challenge Team are a patient focused group: highly adept at problem-solving; always extremely approachable and above all else; dedicated to their jobs. The team is comprised of colleagues from across the local area, tasked by NHS England to transform outpatient services for Cardiology, ENT and Urology.

Responsible for designing and implementing new processes, to reduce patients waiting times and inappropriate referrals. They engaged with key stakeholders, sustaining momentum for an intense 100 day period.

Curtis received nearly 10 nominations from his colleagues who noticed the exemplary care he gives to his patients. He is a valuable asset to his team, from joining as a bank Healthcare Assistant to eventually qualifying as a staff nurse. Curtis has always shown a keenness to improve his knowledge and provide the best possible care. Now a confident nurse, he is helping to teach others who are learning in the department with patience and support.

Butterfly garden opened at Doncaster Royal Infirmary Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) opened its Butterfly Garden, a place dedicated to providing comfort to those who have experienced the loss of an infant.

The tranquil venue will also be available to anyone who is need of a quiet place to think.

The project is the brainchild of DBTH’s Neonatal team. It was originally conceived as a memorial space that would be dedicated to parents who have experienced a miscarriage, still birth, or neonatal death.

Spurred on by patient feedback and encouragement for the project, staff at the Trust, working with the Grace Project and bereaved families, organised several fundraising events and activities, all with the aim of gathering money for the garden’s

Speaking about the garden, Kaye said: ‘’This has been a passion-project for many current members of Team DBTH, including Sarah Spencer, Neonatal Unit Sister and Sarah Newton, Community Midwife, as well as our former colleagues Nick Kerry and Chloe Tedaldi. Each of them was instrumental in

coming up with the idea for the garden and guiding it towards completion, so it’s absolutely fantastic to see their dream finally come to fruition. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the generous support and tireless efforts of the families involved, as well as our own Estates and Facilities team, who have done so much make this vision a reality.’’

Once the garden was ready for unveiling to the public, the Trust arranged a formal opening which took place on 11 October. There, visitors were able to explore the peaceful and intimate environment, surrounded by ornate flora, rose arches, a gazebo, decorative pebble formations and plenty of seating.

Trust Chair, Suzy Brain England OBE, cut the ribbon and formally opened the garden to the public. Of the occasion, Suzy said: ‘’I was very pleased to be able to open this garden to the public, as I know how important it has been to everyone involved. A great deal of effort went into fundraising, designing and building this special memorial space. I am proud of what has been accomplished and of the opportunity this now gives to bereaved parents. I am sure that this garden will be of great value to our visitors, whatever they are going through.’’

Baby Loss Awareness Week is held annually from 9 to 15 October. A collaboration between more than 60 charities across the UK, Baby Loss Awareness Week aims to raise awareness about the key issues affecting those who have experienced pregnancy or baby loss in the UK.

DRI extends emergency department with new facility Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) officially opened a new facility within its Emergency Department at a ribbon cutting ceremony earlier this week.

Bassetlaw Hospital opens new changing places facility Located in the Outpatient Department, ‘Changing Places’ is a facility for anyone with a complex health issue who cannot use a standard disabled toilet as they require extra equipment and space.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) opened its first ‘Changing Places’ facility on Friday 21 September 2018 at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Located in the Outpatient Department, ‘Changing Places’ is a facility for anyone with a complex health issue who cannot use a standard disabled toilet as they require extra equipment and space. The room features a height adjustable adult changing bed, an electronic ceiling hoist, height adjustable sink, peninsular toilet, shower, non-slip floor and privacy screen.

This facility has been championed by local mum Alison Beevers, whose son, Mylor, now 12, was born prematurely and is quadriplegic and has cerebral palsy. Alison, who worked with hospital bosses on the design and requirements of the room, said: “I’m absolutely delighted the hospital now provides a Changing Places facility for patients and visitors. This fantastic new addition will help disabled and elderly patients who need assistance to be able to use a toilet safely and with dignity.”

“People with complex health needs visit hospitals regularly so a Changing Place will

make an enormous difference and will help to alleviate any additional stress people may feel when visiting. I’m very grateful for the support the hospital has shown our campaign, as a mum of a child who has complex health needs I have first-hand experience of the problems getting out and about without adequate assistive toilets. I believe hospitals are the most natural and important setting for these facilities.”

The facility, which will meet the needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, as well as older people who may need assistance, allowing them to use the toilet facilities safely and comfortably. Over 250,000 people in the UK need Changing Places toilets to enable them to get out and about.

Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of the Board, said: “I am delighted the Trust now has this important facility for our patients, their carers and visitors. This facility brings peace of mind when visiting for hospital appointments safe in the knowledge there is a safe place to change. Without Changing Places individuals are often forced to change in inappropriate places which can be both undignified and challenging. I am also very pleased to announce that work on a similar facility at Doncaster Royal Infirmary begins in January 2019. Thank you to Alison for her support and guidance throughout this project.”

The service, which treats minor ailments, is staffed by skilled emergency nurse practitioners and supported by the consultant team and is an extension to the current Emergency Department (ED).

In the coming months it is hoped that the facility will enable the Trust to better manage increased attendances in winter with the additional unit freeing up space in the main department for patients with the most need and also, hopefully, reducing waiting times.

David Purdue, Chief Operating Officer at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, said: “We are delighted to have opened this new facility here at DRI. This is an extension to our existing Emergency Department ‘footprint’ and we are asking patients to continue to use this service as they have always done in the past.”

Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s ED hosts a Front Door Assessment and Signposting Service (FDASS), which triages all patients on their arrival and signposts those with less serious complaints to the Urgent Care Centre on site. The service’s overall function will remain much the same, however with those minor ailments such as sprains, strains and other less serious complaints seen in the new facility.

David continues: “With this extension of our main Emergency Department capacity, we can keep space available for those coming in with more serious conditions.

We believe this facility will complement our current provision for urgent and emergency care, ensuring local patients get the best possible care.”

The Minor Injuries Unit at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough will remain unaffected by this change and continue to operate daily from 9am to 9pm except Christmas Day.

Richard urges screening after sight loss scare A Doncaster man is encouraging people living with diabetes to protect their eyesight after a retinal bleed left him uncertain if he would be able to work or drive again.

Richard Gair, aged 45 from Doncaster, was diagnosed with diabetes at age 17 and received a pancreas and kidney transplant last year. Although Richard’s diabetes is now classified as in remission due to the successful transplant, Richard recently experienced a diabetic vitreous haemorrhage which is where blood vessels burst in the eye and cause sight loss.

Fortunately, Richard immediately contacted the diabetic eye screening team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary who rushed him in for an emergency appointment.

Richard said: “It was a frightening experience. It started out as a little speck on my vision which quickly spread down, and almost completely covered my eye. At the time it affected me mentally, you can’t look to the future, all you can think about is that you can’t see. The thing that really got to me was the thought that I might not see my dad’s face again.”

Now that Richard has recovered from the incident, he is encouraging anyone living with diabetes to take up their invitations to diabetic eye screening. The test involves a special camera taking a photograph of the eye.

Richard said: “It’s a no brainer really – half an hour out of your life to come to an appointment which could stop you from going blind – I think that’s definitely worth it. I now know what it feels like to lose your sight and I’m so grateful that I can see again. The team at the hospital were great.

They treated me like they genuinely cared about me, not like I was an ID number or a pile of notes.”

Richard is now running a successful business which makes bespoke, hand painted leather jackets. He has recently attended Manchester Fashion Show and has bagged some contracts with high end designers.

Speaking of his success, Richard said: “I’m very lucky that I love my work. It’s my livelihood and I couldn’t imagine losing my sight and not being able to do what I love.

I’d hate to think that this could happen to someone else out there with a much less fortunate outcome and they wouldn’t be able to pursue their dreams. So, if you have diabetes, make sure you attend your screening appointments. It could save your eye sight.”

Screening Programme visits Doncaster Rovers to raise awareness On Thursday 6 September, the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Diabetes Eye Screening Programme met with the team at Doncaster Rovers in order to outline the dangers of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Ingrid Thomasson, Joint Programme Manager for the service, visited the first team at Doncaster Rovers with the aim of raising awareness about the condition as well as highlighting the importance of attending screenings to ensure any problems are caught early on. The hope is that they will then pass this crucial information along to their fans, friends and families.

If you have diabetes, then there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of sight loss. As well as attending your annual screening appointments, make sure you exercise regularly, eat well and control your blood sugar levels and avoid smoking.

Hospital Governor supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) supported Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, encouraging local women and men to be ‘breast aware’ so they can spot any unusual changes in their body.

The Trust also urges people to attend their breast screening appointments, which helps to spot potential issues early by using an X-ray test, called a mammogram, which can spot cancers when they’re too small to see and feel.

“If you receive an appointment to attend for a mammogram, don’t put it off, breast screening saves lives.”

Hospital Governor and Bassetlaw District Councillor Sue Shaw, said: “I am supporting the Trust in raising awareness of Breast Cancer Awareness month to highlight the importance for women and men to check their breasts regularly and know the signs and symptoms to look out for. If you receive an appointment to attend for a mammogram, don’t put it off, breast screening saves lives.”

Both men and women are affected by breast cancer and should know how their breast tissue normally looks and feels and what changes to

look out. Signs and symptoms could include, but is by no means a complete list, discharge from either of your nipples; a lump or swelling in either of your armpits; dimpling on the skin of your breasts; a rash on or around your nipple; a change in the appearance of your nipple.

Women aged 50 to 70 in this area are offered a routine mammograms every three years.

Mammograms are able to pick up breast cancer at an early stage, before a person can feel any symptoms. This early diagnosis improves chances of successful treatment and recovery.

This protects those coming into hospital from the virus but it won’t protect your loved ones at home.

The flu virus can be serious for those who are vulnerable. It is particularly important that we work together to prevent the spread of flu for the benefit of children, the elderly and of those who have underlying health conditions.

The flu vaccine is routinely given on the NHS to: • People over the age of 65 • Those with certain health conditions including respiratory diseases; heart, liver or kidney disease; diabetes or chronic neurological conditions • Pregnant women • children aged 2 and 3 • children in reception class and school years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Local Communities supporting DBTH Charity

Hospital Donation in memory of organ donor hero A local family has donated over £6,000 to Doncaster Royal Infirmary in memory of their beloved relative who selflessly saved the lives of nine people by registering to be an organ donor.

Sue McCormack was looking forward to her wedding anniversary, planning to retire and spend more time with her grandchildren when she was suddenly taken ill in 2016 and rushed to hospital.

Tragically, Sue’s family were given the devastating news that she had suffered a bleed on her brain and there was nothing medics could do.

Sue, who had always been supportive of organ donation and had registered with NHS blood and Transplant, had made her wishes very clear: If anything was to ever happen to her – she wanted to help others. Ultimately, Sue’s thoughtful actions meant that three adults and six children who needed organ transplants are now living better quality lives.

The McCormacks, residents of Moorends, weren’t letting Sue’s legacy stop with the nine lives she saved. As a way to say ‘thank you’, they began fundraising in her name in order to make a donation to the Critical Care Unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Sue’s husband Nick said: “Sue had the kindest

heart in the world. She would talk to anyone and you’d be talking for hours once you got her started. She was the life and soul of every party – first on the dance floor and the last off. She’s missed by so many people and that really shows in how much support we’ve had with the fundraising. Everyone who knew her has wanted to help and we’d like to thank all of our family and friends, and everyone at the Canal Tavern in Thorne for all their support and fundraising efforts.”

The McCormacks raised £6,300 for the Critical Care Unit where they stayed and spent their last night with Sue. Nick said: “We wanted to give something back to Critical Care because the level of compassion they extended to Sue was exceptional, even down to making sure her hair was done and she had her glasses on when we said goodbye. All the staff were fantastic and couldn’t do any more than they did.

“We all miss Sue but we are extremely proud of the difference she made. Every time someone came in to tell us they had found a

donor match we all felt comforted knowing that another family somewhere was getting good news. It really helped us through losing Sue so suddenly to know that something positive came from it.”

Annette Trotter, Sister on the Critical Care Unit, said: “Nick and his family have been inspirational in how they have focused their energy on raising money for DCC. This large sum of money has enabled us to buy chairs to assist in the rehabilitation of our patients.

These chairs allow ventilated but awake patients to sit out of bed in comfort. We have already seen positive benefits to the long-term rehabilitation of patients by having these chairs and we can’t thank the McCormacks enough.

“I also want to take a minute to thank Sue for her selfless act of becoming an organ donor. From such a tragic event she has managed to affect so many lives in such a positive way. Sue was a special person and many people owe her a debt of gratitude that will be never forgotten – she was, and remains, a true hero.”

Friends donation helps to make families more comfortable at Bassetlaw Hospital

‘Dignity Bags’ for Doncaster Breast Patients A local BT call centre has supported a project started by one of its staff members to create ‘dignity bags’ for patients in Doncaster who have undergone a mastectomy (removal of a breast).

The fabric satchels are specially designed to carry a blood drain, which is a bag to collect fluids that is usually fitted for around two weeks after surgery. Although they are a necessity following a mastectomy, and essential for recovery, the drain bags can be unsightly and often cause patients to feel self-conscious.

April Jeffery, who works at the BT call centre in Doncaster, saw the dignity bags being used in Rotherham and wanted to make some for Doncaster patients. With the support of her colleagues at work, April was able to donate 213 dignity bags to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

“I’m really grateful for the support that this project received at BT. If I had been making the bags on my own I would never have been able to make this many.”

April said: “I saw the dignity bag pattern online and it really struck a chord with me. A few years ago I had an ileostomy bag and I hated the thought that there were patients who had undergone mastectomy surgery and might already be feeling low, that felt self-conscious on top of that. I’m really grateful for the

support that this project received at BT. If I had been making the bags on my own I would never have been able to make this many.”

Bassetlaw Hospital has received a donation of a comfy reclining chair from the League of Friends, to be used for the benefit of families visiting loved ones who are seriously ill.

The specialist reclining seat, purchased in partnership with Bassetlaw Freemasons at a cost £1,000, has been placed in a palliative care room on Ward C1, an area which cares for patients with respiratory conditions.

The chair provides a comfortable place to rest and is part of a recent refurbishment to create a home-fromhome environment for seriously ill patients.

Michelle Cookson, C1 Ward Manager, said: “On behalf of the Trust I want to say ‘thank you’ to the League of Friends for their continued support, it means so much to staff and our patients. Visiting relatives often spend many hours with their loved ones and this chair will make them more comfortable during their visits.”

Over the past number of years, both patients and staff have benefited enormously from the continued and long-standing support of the League of Friends, which raises thousands of pounds annually for patient comforts at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Mary Payne, League of Friends, said: “The League of Friends fund-raise on behalf of the people of Bassetlaw for their local hospital. Thank you once again to Bassetlaw Freemasons for their continued support.

We always enjoy visiting the wards to see how our donations benefit patients and their relatives.”

The material used to make the bags was donated by Sew Cutes, a fabric shop in Edlington. Owner Tracy heard about April’s sewing challenge and offered her 20 meters of fabric free of charge.

BT also managed to raise over £250 for the Jasmine Centre at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, which cares for patients with breast cancer.

The funds were raised at a health and wellbeing day at BT, where staff were able to pay £1 to use the sewing machine to create a bag. Scott Johnson, Senior Call Centre Manager at BT, said: “Our staff are always forthcoming and enthusiastic about getting involved in helping local charities and this was no exception, the response April had to the dignity bag project was immense. It gave us the chance to give something back to our community and we learnt a new skill in the process!

“I’d like to say a special thank you to April, Suzanne Webster and Beth Hulme, who gave a lot of their free time to make the majority of the bags.”

The company plan on holding an annual sewing drive every July to make more dignity bags for breast patients in Doncaster and have shared the pattern with other BT branches to introduce them across the country.

Sharing how we care

As a Trust, we are committed to enhancing our patient experience and using feedback to continue to strive for person centred care.

Person centred care we means we treat each patient individually and think about their personal needs as well as their clinical ones.

Should we? Ban the beaker Hydration is key for recovery. Whilst we treat whatever ailment a patient is staying in hospital for, it’s equally important to make sure that nutrition and hydration needs are looked after to ensure that speedy recovery.

Patient often prefer to drink from something that they recognise like a cup or mug, which can encourage and comfort if they are feeling a little off their food or drink due to their illness. Our staff have committed to asking our patients, or their carers, what they normally drink from to promote regular drinks and reduce the number of patients using beakers who’s tastes are actually set on china mugs!

Improving Enhanced Care The provision of enhanced therapeutic care (previously referred to as specialing) is a significant challenge for many trusts across the NHS, including our’s. Increasing numbers of patients admitted to hospitals have confusion, delirium and dementia or are at risk of harm from falling or leaving the ward unsafely. Equally, patients may present with mental health needs that require additional therapeutic care in order to holis cally support and maintain safety and reduce the risk of harm.

When we use a lot of bank or agency staff to provide the enhanced care, patients may be cared for by temporary staff who may restrict or limit patient movement, who at times have not known the patient’s name by the end of their shift.

Our response to the increasing needs for enhanced care was to develop a daily supervision and engagement assessment document. This helps to guide staff on the simple, yet effective interventions that may keep their patients safe.

To help support our staff to keep patients safe and provide enhanced therapeutic care, we have recently appointed Emily King as Enhanced Care Practitioner. Emily will be available to support patients, family and ward staff to care for those vulnerable patients.

Companionship on the wards An unlikely duo of furry volunteers have begun making a forntightly appearance on a Doncaster Hospital ward to cheer up patients.

care for patients with dementia, while Darcie, a two year old Ragdoll cat, is a regular on the Kingfisher and Kestrel wards which care for older patients.

Ted and Darcie, two trained ‘Pets As Therapy’ animals, visit the Gresley Unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary every other Monday to provide comfort and a bit of companionship to elderly inpatients who might be missing their own pets.

Ted and Darcie have been presented with ID cards, making them official staff members of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, in their roles as ‘Senior Snuggle Officers.’

“We love having Ted and Darcie on the ward. The whole environment changes when they arrive.”

Our patients who have pets at home that are being looked after while they are in hospital appreciate the companionship they provide and it can spark memories for those who have had pets in the past or remember a family member’s beloved furry friend. All of these comforts and memories help our patients to feel at home and speeds up their recovery.”

News from the Governors Anwar Choudhry In July, we were advised of the death of Anwar Choudhry, aged 65. Anwar served the Trust as public governor for Doncaster since August 2016. Anwar’s family continues to be in our thoughts.

Local hospitals appoint new governors Following recent elections, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has appointed three new governors, with an additional two returning to their previously held seats.

The successful candidates from the elections were: • Bev Marshall and Phillip Beavers (both returning) and Linda Espey in Doncaster • Steve Marsh and Shelia Walsh in Bassetlaw Nominations for next year’s elections open on

10 December. To help people decide if they want to apply, the Trust will be holding a pair of informative sessions, where there will be an opportunity to meet the Chair and Chief Executive, as well as to hear first-hand from governors and about the election process.

The first of these sessions will take place in Bassetlaw Hospital on 11 December at 4pm.

Thanks to long-serving governors At our Annual Members’ Meeting in September and Council of Governors in October we said thank you to two of long-serving governors. George Webb, Public Governor Doncaster, and Susan Overend, Public Governor Bassetlaw, have both clocked up 15 years’ service having joined when Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals became a foundation trust.

Between them they defined what a foundation trust governor was meant to

be. Indeed, George was a former Vice Chair (serving for 12 years) and Lead Governor.

Susan now plans to concentrate on getting her golf handicap down while George will continue his work with the local church.

Thank you and goodbye also to Maureen Young who stepped down as a Public Governor for Doncaster after 12 years. The Trust meant a lot to Maureen and she leaves us having achieved some real benefits for the people and patients of Doncaster.

Peter takes on Chairing role Congratulations to Bassetlaw Public Governor Peter Abell who, having recently been elected to the NHS Providers’ Governor Advisory Committee (GAC), has now been confirmed as its chair.

The GAC members provide oversight and

feedback on NHS Providers’ work and areas that require debate and action. The GAC has the opportunity to help shape the governor services NHSP provide to members such as the GovernWell training programme, annual Governor Focus conference, bespoke training and guidance resources.

A brilliant idea of seating everyone around tables and formatting questions together. I always felt these meetings were a bit like us and them. This evening’s arrangement gave everyone the opportunity to have their say but in a well-structured way... History Matters

A big day for Montagu Hospital Montagu Hospital began as Montagu Cottage Hospital in 1899, a converted schoolroom in Bank Street donated by local resident Mr. Andrew Montagu – hence the name. The building soon proved too small, and a piece of land in Adwick Road was acquired on which to build a new Montagu Hospital, which opened in 1905. By 1924 some additional accommodation was needed for the growing town. Funds were raised, local mining and railway companies, and numerous others, contributing to building costs.

In recognition of their support, on 26 July 1924 a stone-laying ceremony took place, at which no fewer than nineteen stones were laid by representatives of various organisations.

The first stone was put in place by President of the hospital Capt. F.J.O. Montagu, wielding a silver trowel especially made for the occasion; the others then followed. One was laid by Mr. J.H. Hughes, J.P., on behalf of Manvers Main Colliery Employees. All the stones can still be clearly seen; some have been re-cut in more recent times owing to weather damage. Each stonelayer was given as a memento of the occasion a small wooden ceremonial mallet, one of which has recently been presented to the hospital by a Mr. Turnberry, who came across it some 20 years ago while clearing out a local house. The mallet had languished in his garage ever since.

The beautifully-turned mallets were the gift of a Mr. A.T. Wroe, of Wombwell. As can be seen in the picture, this one, only 22cm in length, bears a brass shield on which is engraved the following: Presented to W.H. Hughes J.P. for laying foundation Stone Mexbro Montague Hospital Extension 7-6-24 The lettering is somewhat rough and ready and contains some flaws. The ‘4’ in ‘24’ has been crudely stamped over an earlier number, probably a zero. Not only that, but the date is completely wrong! The ceremony took place on 26 July, not 7 June. How can this discrepancy have come about? Were the shield or the inscription, or both, added later, when memories had faded? Who was responsible for the engraving? Certainly not a professional

Perhaps other mallets (at least 18, possibly 19, were made) will turn up and provide answers to some of these questions.

The extensions provided a new Boardroom on the ground floor (the step up into it is due to the rising ground that the builders had to contend with). In addition, more staff living accommodation on the upper floor was now made available. The extensions were opened some 18 months later.
