Award for IT training The trust’s two IT trainers have been recognised for their work helping staff to improve their computer skills.

The department has been awarded a plaque for becoming a Microsoft Office Skills Training Centre from the NHS Microsoft IT academy programme – prodigy learning.

The award recognises that the training at the trust has helped staff become more productive and efficient in the ways they use computers.

The trust’s IT trainers Debbie Lazenby and Mandy White (pictured) said: “We are delighted to have received this recognition.

“Since becoming a Microsoft Office Skills Training Centre we have already had more than 200 staff take part.

“By doing so staff will not only receive the most rewarding learning experience but will also be able to improve their use of Microsoft Office 2010 while gaining recognition.”

New call centre takes nearly 100,000 calls in its first year Staff in the trust’s new call centre service – single point of access – have celebrated its first birthday.

Over the last year staff in the office on Hartlepool’s marina have received around 350 phone calls a day. The total number of calls so far stands at more than 97,000, with more than 70,000 of these coming from patients and the rest from health professionals.

The service was set up so that patients right across the Hartlepool and Stockton area have just one number to ring when wanting to contact a district nurse, community specialist nurse or community matron.

The call handlers ensure patients and professionals receive the most appropriate service at the right time and a handling system helps calls be spread evenly around the team.

Office manager Angie McMurray (pictured) said: “I remember our first day here – we had this large empty office and no one was sure quite how it was all going to work.

“Many staff who came here were very new to a lot of the work we do. Many

had just worked in one of two of the trust’s department – here, we cover 14 different areas.

“It was obviously a learning curve for the majority of us but staff adapted very quickly.

“Even when the service just started we still got a good number of calls come in to the office and since then we average around 350 calls a day. Staff also have to sort through emails, faxes and other tasks that come through the office.

“I would like to thank the whole team for the huge efforts they have made over the last year to make it a success. They should be very proud of the hard work they have put in.”

Clinical director for community services Linda Watson said: “The new system has meant our community teams have been able to spend more dedicated time with patients knowing that the call handlers will ensure all calls are dealt with appropriately, instead of being phoned directly themselves.

“It’s a really big improvement for patients and I’d like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Staff challenged to sign up to duathlon Staff at the trust have been challenged to sign up to the Stockton Duathlon Festival 2014.

by Stockton’s riverside – which is a cycling and running event with three separate ability levels.

Earlier this year the trust launched its health and wellbeing strategy which aims to encourage more staff to get involved in exercise and to reduce sickness absence by promoting healthier lifestyles and intervention and rehabilitation services available.

Sharon said: “For any staff wanting to get more active there are so many events out there that they can get involved in.

“This will be the second time the Stockton Duathlon Festival has been held and it is a great challenge for staff to take on.

Anyone of any ability can take part and it is something that staff can use to motivate themselves to train and get fit during the winter and spring period.

“We know staff work incredibly hard, providing high quality care to patients day in, day out.

“Making sure they are as fit and healthy as possible to do this important work is our priority; we also want to help staff to help

their own health and wellbeing.”

Stockton Borough Council leisure and sports development coordinator Andrea Hogg (pictured) said: “After a very successful first year Stockton Duathlon has been selected as an age-group qualifier for the 2014 World Championships (standard distance) and for the 2015 European Championships (sprint distance), so people taking part can run and ride with the best, even if they’re just out to have fun.

“The event is open to absolutely anyone of any ability. There are three different races so people of all abilities are welcome.”

Competitors can get their adrenaline flowing in the standard distance race which involves a 10k run, 40k cycle and 5k run or alternatively have a go at the sprint course, a race made up of a 5k run, 20k cycle and ending with a 2.5k run.

If you are just starting out, there is a novice distance - setting off with a 2k run followed by a 10k cycle and a 1k run.

The event will be held on Sunday April 27.

Family donate to cardiac rehab team The family and friends of a man who suffered a fatal heart attack have made a donation to the trust’s cardiac rehabilitation team.

Ernie Ferri had a sudden heart attack more than four years ago while out on the golf course at Middlesbrough Golf Club.

Ernie’s son in law Stuart Wilson and Ernie’s best friend Denis Murray decided to hold a golf fundraising event each year to help raise money for local charities for the treatment of heart conditions.

Out of the money raised, Stuart and Denis decided to use £1,500 to buy two new exercise bikes for the gym at Thornaby Pavilion.

The cardiac rehabilitation team run sessions at Thornaby Pavilion, as well as at Splash in Stockton and at Billingham Forum for patients recovering from heart problems.

Patients are offered 16 courses of exercise, relaxation and education in a group environment with help from experienced health professionals.

Denis said: “Losing Ernie when he was just 57 came as a huge shock and all his family and friends were devastated by his death. Over time we realised that we wanted to do something to help other people with heart problems and to make a difference to their lives.

“It is something we know Ernie would have wanted to be done.

We heard about the great work that the cardiac rehabilitation team did and we wanted some of the money raised to go towards buying new exercise bikes there.”

Lead coronary heart disease nurse Julie Wratten, who is part of the cardiac rehabilitation programme team, said: “I would like to thank Stuart and Denis for all the incredible work they have put into raising the money to buy these bikes. These bikes really will make a huge difference to many people’s lives and will help staff with the work we do with patients.

“Our community cardiac team work with patients who have suffered heart problems through

an exercise and education programme. It is moderate exercise in a safe monitored environment which is aimed at gradually building up the exercise a patient does. We also look at a patient’s diet, smoking and alcohol consumption. We offer support to patients who have to adapt to a diagnosis of heart disease. Clients can be referred

to the health trainer team for intensive support in making lifestyle changes.”

Stuart, 38, and Denis, 61, from Middlesbrough, have also raised money to help buy a defibrillator for Middlesbrough Golf Club.

Breastfeeding group popular with mothers Based just off Billingham’s main high street is the Footsteps Children’s Centre – home to a breastfeeding group that is proving to be popular with mothers.

Medical trainees enjoying their time at the trust Medical trainees at the trust have said they are happy with the way the programme is run and the responsibility they are given, a new independent report has found.

The trust has recently had a visit by the School of Surgery where a group of trainees were spoken to about their experiences.

In the report, head of the school, Mike Bradburn said: “The general surgery trainees seen at the meeting were happy overall.

“They report excellent training opportunities, plenty of time to get to theatre, good teamwork, supportive staff and good emergency experience.

“They feel there is good supervision, regular clinics, the potential to undertake research and the freedom to ask questions and to learn effectively.

“Emergency surgical provision seems to work very well, with all trainees reporting favourably on the way it is organised; it is clear who is admitting and who is operating. There is the flexibility to work across teams if trainees are away. “ Admin and quality coordinator for medical education Julie Oakley said: “We are always listening to what trainees have to say and act as quickly as we can to any issues they raise.

“It is therefore very pleasing to hear that the trainees spoken to were happy with how their time working for us was going.

“We do our utmost to ensure we create the right environment for the trainees to learn in.”

Consultant surgeon and surgical tutor Vijay Kurup (pictured) said: “We are delighted to have received such positive feedback in this report.

“It is important that we always listen to what the trainees have to say, and that is exactly what we do.

“Personally I am enjoying the role of surgical tutor and feel very well supported by the trust in the work I do.

It is very rewarding to see trainees come through here and learn so much.”

The breastfeeding group is one of many regular activities based at the Sure Start centre.

The group runs a session every Friday for women and babies, where women are offered advice, help and encouragement.

Beside it is the healthy start group, which offers advice and help to parents who have babies or young children.

Both groups are run by staff from the trust in the community.

Midwifery assistant Fiona Dawson, who runs the breastfeeding support group, said: “We can offer advice to mothers who are going through the process of breastfeeding and who feel they need help.

“The group is about providing professional and peer support – mothers here know what everyone else is going through and can offer help and support to each other.

“Breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby as breast milk contains protective factors such as antibodies.

“Breastfeeding helps protect babies against infection, gastroenteritis, urinary

tract infections, ear and chest infection and protects against allergies and diabetes.

“It is also good for mothers too. Statistics show women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer and also has been shown to help prevent hip fractures in later life.

“It also helps women burn calories and lose weight after pregnancy.

“It is very helpful that we have the healthy start group next to us. We work very closely together.”

Steph Milne, who works in the nursery at the University Hospital of North Tees, goes with her five month old son Maxwell to the breastfeeding group.

She said: “The group has really helped me.

I can not only speak to qualified experts who can help me but I can also speak to other mothers and we can offer advice to one another.”

Tracey Taylor, 37, from Billingham, also went to the group with her daughter Amelia, now two.

Tracey said: “With Amelia I went through a period where I did need advice and this group was here to help.

“The group is fantastic – mothers support each other and there is expert advice and guidance available for professionals.”

Octagon Marketing Company Ltd specialise in gaining advertising support for magazines so Anthem is now produced, packaged, distributed and delivered at minimal cost to the trust.

Couple donate box of toys to children’s ward Staff in the children’s ward at the University Hospital of North Tees have thanked a mum and dad who donated a collection of toys to the ward as a way of saying thanks.

Sue will keep in regular touch with colleagues by holding peer reviews Former director of nursing, patient safety and quality Sue Smith has forged new links between the trust and her new place of work.

Sue left the trust in November to take up a post as executive chief nurse at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Before leaving, Sue began setting up links between the two trusts – with the aim of sharing good practice and ways of working and helping to ensure very best services and outcomes for patients.

In a first visit recently, staff from Morecambe Bay’s safeguarding team have already come to the University Hospital of North Tees for a tour of hospital services and talks with staff.

The trusts discussed plans to share a dashboard system which is used to store data on how each ward and department is performing.

Sue said: “I’d like to thank members of the adult and children safeguarding team at Morecambe Bay for coming to visit the trust. The safety of everyone who uses our hospitals is our priority.

“I am excited about the idea of being able to bring these two trusts together for peer reviews.

“It means we can share the good practice we have and also inform each other about areas where we have not always met the

standards we expect to and how we are looking to improve.

“Both trusts will have things that it does very well and things that it needs to improve and there will be many areas where I am sure we can help each other.

“We have already agreed that we want to share ideas from the dashboard which we use to monitor how each ward and department is performing.

“This dashboard provides a measure of nursing quality and is a tool that I regularly use to look for any trends or issues to investigate.

“Though I am very sad to have left North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust over what was the best five years of my career so far, I am looking forward to continuing to work with colleagues through these peer reviews.”

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Jackie Daniel said: “This is a really good initiative between staff from both trusts who are committed to continually improving services for patients through shared practice and learning. I am sure that Sue and her team will be looking over the next year to expand this concept to bring in and share best practice for the benefit of everyone who uses our hospitals.”

Brad and Martha Callaghan raised funds to buy the toys after holding a tea and cake sale at their home in Billingham.

They wanted to thank hospital staff who have cared for two year old son Peter on different occasions.

We would all like to thank Martha and Brad for kindly donating a fantastic collection of toys to the ward.

Brad said: “We are very thankful to staff across the hospital who have helped care for my son and my wife at various times.

“I have been delighted with the care they have received and we both just wanted to give something back.

“We have bought a variety of toys, including computer games and board games, which we hope children in the ward will enjoy playing with.”

Hospital play specialist Chris Goodwin said: “We would all like to thank Martha and Brad for kindly donating a fantastic collection of toys to the ward.

“We are very grateful and I am sure these toys will be well used by the children who come here to be treated.”

Radiology transformed to improve patient care The radiology department at the University Hospital of North Tees has been transformed to improve patient experience.

A series of building projects has created waiting bays to improve privacy and dignity for patients from accident and emergency on trolleys and a separate waiting area created for patients from accident and emergency who are able to walk.

Patients who are already in hospital are taken to separate male and female waiting bays, while a new inpatient recovery area has been created to offer the really poorly patients privacy away from other patients.

The waiting area where cardiac patients who need a CT scan go is now slightly larger than it was previously and the main reception has been refurbished to provide a welcoming and calm entrance to the department.

CCTV and a ‘nurse call facility’ has been installed in all of these areas which enables staff to monitor all patients at all times.

To make further improvements equipment has been replaced with two new digital enabled x-ray machines and the department has a new fluoroscopy and interventional room.

Lead for radiology transformation Marion Gowland said: “The building projects have created an environment which complements the standard of safety and care provided by our staff and meets the expectations of our patients. It has made a big difference to the privacy of our patients.”

Head of design and development Steve Taylor, who managed the project, said: “We are constantly working to improve our facilities. Maintaining privacy and dignity for patients is our priority and over the past few years a great deal of work has been done to look at our ward areas and facilities to make improvements. We have continued to invest in the buildings and equipment to constantly improve the patient experience.”

A state of the art CT scanner which is only the second of its kind in the North East was officially unveiled at the University Hospital of North Tees.

The trust was delighted to invite one of its first patients, Ian Smith, to unveil the £1million Siemens Definition Flash scanner which is the fastest, most accurate and safest on the market and offers unmatched imaging detail at the lowest possible radiation, benefiting critically ill patients and children.

When Ian from Hartburn started to get chest pain when exercising he was, naturally, worried. His GP referred him to the trust’s cardiology team where he

started having tests to get to the bottom of the problem.

After some initial tests, the next step in the process was an angiogram (a test where a catheter is passed through an artery in the groin or wrist and dye is injected to enable heart experts to look at the heart vessels).

After listening to the details of the test Ian decided he didn’t want to have this invasive procedure. When consultant cardiologist Nick Child told him it might be possible to have a low dose radiation CT scan Ian said he would like to go ahead and he had the scan done in July. Thankfully the test gave the 57-year-old assistant head teacher the all clear. There were no blockages in his arteries.

Now he can fulfil his wish of cycling from Lands Ends to John O’Groats.

Ian said: “I can’t thank Dr Child and the team enough for the care I’ve had. I was delighted to be invited back to officially open the scanner.

available to local people, and right on the doorstep.”

The scanner has the power and speed to produce quality and detailed images, which will improve accuracy for diagnosis and treatment.

It is also the world’s most advanced cardiac CT scanner and can take an image of the heart in just a fraction of a second.

Clinical director for radiology Matthew Trewhella said: “This scanner is set to transform the service we provide for patients.

“Previously the only way we would have been able to look at heart arteries would have been to take an x-ray, by inserting a tube into the body and into the coronary arteries, but this scanner gives us detailed images of the heart without the need to insert any tubes in less than a heartbeat.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer our patients across Teesside and the surrounding area a much improved service using the very best and most accurate equipment.”

Raising awareness of mouth cancer The trust’s oral health experts have been at the front of a drive to raise awareness of mouth cancer recently.

Tees community dental service oral health promotion department have been holding sessions with health and social care professionals such as dentists, dental nurses, care staff and pharmacists across Teesside.

Public support gets porter through to area finals of singing competition Hospital porter Matty Clarkson got through to the area finals of UK singing competition Open Mic UK, thanks to the support of the public.

Matty Clarkson sang Let Her Go by Passenger at the Newcastle regional final of Open Mic UK, which went down a storm with the crowd, but it wasn’t quite enough to get him through to the area final.

But after the public got behind Matty he won the wild card vote, beating the competition to get him through to the area finals.

The 30-year old, who has worked at the University Hospital of North Tees as a porter for the past seven years, was lucky enough to take part in the North England and Scotland area final.

Matty said: “I was just so grateful to everyone who voted to keep me in the competition to the next stage. I felt really lucky to be through to the area finals on the wild card vote. It was a second chance and I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported and voted for me. It was a fantastic experience and it really means a lot.”

Open Mic UK is the national talent competition which searches for the UK’s best singers, songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.

Examining yourself is simple but a potentially life saving process.

Oral health promotion advisers Penny Ryan and Nicola Cronin have been helping raise awareness.

Penny said: “The aim of these sessions is to ensure that people are correctly advised about mouth cancer and know what signs to look out for.

“More than 6,500 people will be diagnosed with mouth cancer across the country this year.

“Examining yourself is simple but a potentially life saving process. Things to look out for include ulcers

which do not heal within three weeks, red and white patches in the mouth and unusual lumps or swellings.

“If people do notice any of these things, they need to be encouraged to act and visit their dentist as soon as possible.”

Nicola said: “Smoking not only stains your teeth, causes bad breath and leads to gum trouble and loss of teeth, but it is also one of the biggest causes of mouth cancer.

“There are stop smoking services that can help people quit, including at this trust.

“Drinking alcohol can also be a cause. We would advise people to control their alcohol consumption and stick to the recommended

weekly guidelines.

“Every year significantly more men than women are diagnosed with oral cancer. This could be because men are sometimes more reluctant to visit a dentist or GP. If you have symptoms you must visit your dentist immediately.”

Trust dental service staff visited hospitals across Teesside to raise awareness of mouth cancer to mark British Dental Health Foundation’s mouth cancer action month.

Birthday party helps raise funds for chemo day unit

Fundraising makes a difference to children’s diabetes fund Kind-hearted Michael Grainge surprised staff in the paediatric diabetes team with a very generous donation.

Eight year old Michael from Eaglescliffe, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes one year ago decided he wanted to raise money to say thank you to the team who look after him.

He got together with his family, including his younger sister Rubie and set up a stall outside his grandma’s house. They baked and sold fairy cakes, old toys and hand-made jewellery - they raised a grand total of £172.

Michael’s mum Sarah said: “The care that Michael has received from the team has been fantastic. We know that donations like this will really benefit other children with type 1 diabetes.

“This was all Michael’s idea to start fundraising and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped.

“This is our way of saying thank you for the care and support we’ve received.”

Children’s diabetes lead nurse Bev Day added: “We’re so proud of Michael for his fundraising and we’re really grateful to everyone who has contributed.

“We’ll be putting the funds towards taking children who have type 1 diabetes on a social trip. It’s not always easy for the children or their family. This really helps bring children together, who have type 1 diabetes so they don’t feel alone. It’s about providing that extra support to help the children and their families.”

Farewell and good luck Liz

Accident and emergency sister Diane Jones and her father in law – ex Boro player Gordon Jones – handed a cheque to the chemotherapy day unit at the University Hospital of North Tees after holding a birthday fundraiser.

A total of £605 was raised after Diane asked friends and family to give generously at her 50th birthday party at The Swan in Billingham recently.

Diane said: “I would like thank all of my friends and family who gave so generously at my 50th (21st!) birthday recently. Instead of asking for gifts I just asked for people to donate. I only ever expected to raise around £200, so to raise so much more than that is fantastic and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to the cause.”

Gordon was first treated at the unit in 1997 after being referred there by his GP after noticing lumps on his neck and arms and complaining about feeling tired.

After seeing doctors he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and began treatments of chemotherapy.

Over the last few years Gordon has also received regular treatment at the unit for Hodgkin lymphoma.

He said: “Ever since I first came to the unit it has been a calm and peaceful place to come to where staff are friendly.

“Over the years staff here have done so much for me and I believe it is important to give something back to the unit whenever I can.

“When you are being treated with cancer it is a very worrying time but staff here have created a very homely atmosphere in the unit and that is very important for patients and their families.

“Every year we hold a number of fundraising events and distribute the money out to several charities and organisations.”

Ward manager Val Storey said: “I’d like to thank Diane for making this donation – it makes a real difference to the unit.”

Gordon, who is the treasurer of the Middlesbrough Former Players’ Association, has also previously donated £500 to the unit.

Close colleagues of Liz Edwards at the University Hospital of Hartlepool said a fond farewell to her.

Liz, who has worked at the trust as an orthopaedic secretary for four years, said she will miss everyone who she has had the pleasure to work with – but plans to stay in touch.

She said: “I’m looking forward to relaxing and spending more time with my family.

I will miss everyone I have made friends with over the years, but will certainly be keeping in touch.”

Experts gather for oxygen symposium The trust’s quality control laboratory jointly ran an oxygen symposium with the Medical Gas Association (MGA) recently.

The event, organised by Ian Buckingham (pictured) from the trust’s lab, included presentations from several expert speakers.

Themes covered included oxygen conservation, oxygen training, medical gas cylinders and new BOC entonox cylinders and oxygen fires and fire safety.

Ian said: “The event was a great chance for experts from across the region to come together and discuss their work.

“There are always ways that we can learn from colleagues and things we can pick up that improve the way we do things at our own trusts.

“I’d like to thank everyone who attended and would also like to thank the MGA for sponsoring the event and to the trust’s catering staff for the food and drinks provided.”

Hospital play specialists celebrate 50 years Play specialists at the trust celebrated a very special milestone during National Play in Hospital Week.

This year’s National Association of Health Play Specialists (NAHPS) National Play in Hospital Week commemorated 50 years since the first ever hospital play staff were employed by the Brook Hospital in London.

Cash raised for breast unit Staff in medical records at the University Hospital of North Tees raised £420 for the breast unit after holding a cake sale.

The sale proved popular as staff from across the hospital visited the department to try a wide variety of tasty sweet treats that had been baked.

All money raised has been given to the hospital’s breast unit to help invest in further improvements in the quality of care to patients.

Medical records section manager Diane Atkinson said: “The staff here made a great effort to bake several delicious cakes and I’d like to thank them all.

“Many of the staff here really got into the spirit of it by dressing in pink and encouraging as many staff as they could to visit and buy a cake.”

Hospital play specialists work alongside doctors and nurses to welcome children and young people to hospital and prepare them to cope with surgery or other procedures using play and distraction items.

Hospital play specialist Christine Goodwin said: “It can be a daunting time for children and young people

coming into hospital. They are at their most vulnerable when they are poorly and away from their familiar surroundings at home.

“We help take away their worries by using distraction techniques and reassure them that we don’t carry out nursing duties and that we’re here to make their stay in hospital as comfortable as possible.

“We encourage our patients to keep up their usual interests while they are in hospital. We have arts and crafts, books, games and a room especially for teenagers with a TV, sofa and the latest video games and music, which we’re continuing to improve thanks to very generous donations from children and their families. “During the year we often bring the children extra treats and surprises. We bring pantomimes and magicians to the children’s ward to keep the children entertained. We’re really grateful to organisations such as Starlight Children’s Foundation, who regularly help us keep our patients entertained and take away their worries with their fantastic shows.”

Ward manager Vicki Whitfield said: “We’ve got a great team of play specialists and we all work really well together as a team. They do a fantastic job helping and supporting children through what can be a worrying time.

They really do improve the stay in hospital for our young patients and the parents and carers really appreciate their hard work too.”

Once the auditions were complete, trauma coordinator assistant Lisa Askew, neonatal ward matron Debbie Bryan, therapy assistant Leanne Richardson and occupational therapist Marie Johnson began weeks of gruelling training to learn the complex choreography for a street dance spectacular in Stockton’s town centre.

In a final push to get Stockton dancing, Ashley took a quick tour of the University Hospital of North Tees with the production crew from Shine TV and trauma co-ordinator assistant Lisa Askew to encourage staff to learn his routine ahead of the big town dance, where staff later gathered in the physiotherapy gym to learn the steps.

The four performed with other workers alongside Ashley and his troupe, Diversity, in front of an audience of thousands on 14 July, at the event which saw Stockton’s High Street transformed. Ashley and his dance crews brought the routines together, before

leading the whole town in an unforgettable, show-stopping street-dance finale.

Speaking about their experience Lisa said: “It was one of the best experiences of my life.

There was so many people there at the event, where for me it was quite emotional after working so hard training for six weeks to learn the routines, the experience was coming to an end. But it was really enjoyable to see everyone there supporting us.

Debbie added: “The atmosphere was really good. There were thousands of people there joining in.”

Leanne, who is a dancer, said: “I found the physical side of it really intense, fitting in the training around work. The day was amazing.”

Lisa added: “It was really exciting for all of us and hopefully this will put the town on the map.”

New free leaflets for A&E and One Life The trust has gone into partnership with a company who will produce information leaflets for the trust free of charge.

The arrangement forms part of the trust’s aim to make budget savings of around £16million this year.

The supplier, BOE Publishing Limited, provides a range of free products including patient information leaflets to NHS trusts – using advertising revenue to cover its costs.

The first leaflets have been provided to the A&E department at the University Hospital of North Tees and the minor injuries unit at One Life Hartlepool.

The leaflets provide advice and information on a range of illnesses and injuries such as head injuries in adults, common reactions to traumatic events and minor burns and scalds.

The trust’s assistant director of nursing, quality, patient and public experience Barbara Carr, who manages the patient information governance team, said: “These new leaflets are a great example of how the trust can make savings while not compromising patient care.

“The leaflets are a high quality product that look professional and provide important information to patients and families and friends. They will be available for visitors in waiting areas and will also be offered to patients as appropriate when they are discharged from accident and emergency.”

The trust’s commercial development manager Tony Wilson said: “This new arrangement is a very good deal for the trust.

“BOE Publishing Limited is the largest supplier of bespoke medical publishing products in the UK and supplies patient leaflets to health trusts all across the country.

“This is one of a number of different commercial projects the trust has in place to help achieve its annual budget target. Bringing in additional money in this way helps to protect jobs and front line services which of course is our priority.”

HypnoBirthing classes begin at North Tees and Hartlepool The trust is offering HypnoBirthing classes for expectant mothers and their partners.

The five week classes are being held on a Saturday morning to help women to have a more relaxing, comfortable birth by using selfhypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques.

The course is being run by one of the trust’s midwives and accredited HypnoBirthing practitioner Vicki Brown, who qualified as a midwife nine years ago and has seven years’ experience providing HypnoBirthing classes privately.

Each course includes a two and a half hour class every week for five weeks. As they are above and beyond the NHS service, there is a small charge of £25, which covers the cost of a book and CD. The sessions cover the practical aspects of birth such as antenatal education as well as the HypnoBirthing techniques.

Partners learn what their role is and how they can help, such as using massage techniques and also breathing and relaxation techniques along with the women. There will be a maximum of six couples per course.

Vicki said: “HypnoBirthing can make a big difference to women and their experience of labour. It helps couples to prepare mentally and physically for labour and childbirth.

“We’re using the original method, called the Mongan Method. Anyone can join the HypnoBirthing programme. It doesn’t matter whether the woman’s pregnancy is considered to be high risk or low risk. We welcome all women from 28 weeks of their pregnancy.

“It’s about helping women feel more in control. I want to help change the way people think about childbirth. Giving birth can be a much more positive experience for mum, dad and baby by learning the techniques taught during HypnoBirthing.”

“Women who use HypnoBirthing experience less pain and therefore need less pain relief.

It helps the mind’s messages which are sent to the brain to be much more positive, which helps women to relax and remain calm.”

Mum to seven-month-old Clara, Rachael Dea from Stockton, who had a home water birth, also signed up to the HypnoBirthing programme. She said: “I talked about HypnoBirthing with my community midwife and decided it was something I wanted to do.

“My partner Dan is quite calm anyway, but learning these techniques really helped us both.”

Rachael Hooker, 27, from Stockton found out about HypnoBirthing from her sister-inlaw, who had a very peaceful labour and an amazing experience.

Rachel, who is a teacher, gave birth to her son eight month old Sebastian at the University Hospital of North Tees. She said: “When I fell pregnant, I knew I wanted the same experience, so I searched for a local HypnoBirthing practitioner. I decided to do the programme with my husband, and we had such a good experience with it.

“I wasn’t really afraid of the birthing experience. The programme taught me how to help my body do what it was supposed to do.

It helped me to relax and control my breathing.

“When my birthing plan changed throughout the labour I was able to listen to the midwives without increasing any tension.

“My husband Chris was a bit daunted, but after the classes, he knew what to expect.

He had a role and helped me through it. It is fantastic that this is now available at a local NHS trust. I know that it really helped me through the experience and I would recommend it to anyone.”

New high tech simulation suite is helping staff prepare for the real thing The trust has been holding a number of staff workshops in its new high-tech simulation suite over the last few weeks.

The suite at the University Hospital of North Tees was opened to help run sessions for trainee doctors, newly qualified nurses and other staff to prepare them for the real thing.

It is where two model patients are based – sim man and sim baby – who are operated from a remote laptop and can mimic medical problems and respond to treatments or drugs.

A difficult airway day workshop was held there recently, featuring speeches and demonstrations to nurses and both senior and trainee doctors.

The day included a workshop using sim man to show techniques used for managing a difficult airway.

This was followed by presentations and a number of small group skills stations

which included several different scenarios linked to airways management.

The day was an excellent example of why the trust is already benefiting from having a state of the art simulation suite.

Asthma patients needed for new research trial Patients with asthma are being encouraged to take part in a research trial which could improve treatment in the future.

The trust is looking for people with troublesome asthma to take part in a research study of a new drug. It will involve questionnaires about their quality of life, blood tests, breathing tests and monthly visits to our research clinic to receive the new treatment or placebo in addition to their usual treatment, over a period of six to twelve months.

For some people asthma remains a difficult and poorly controlled condition despite near-maximum doses of their usual inhalers. These patients are being encouraged to take part in this research trial, which could lead to an entirely new treatment.

Clinical respiratory research nurse June Battram explained: “Patients need to meet certain criteria to be able to take part. They must be over 18 and they should still be having troublesome symptoms despite taking near-maximum treatment. A series of checks will be made before starting the treatment for the research to make sure that each patient fits the correct criteria.

“We would like anyone who thinks they can help to get in touch. We will ask a number of pre-screening questions over the phone to make sure people may be suitable for the trial. This is their chance to take part in an exciting research trial which could make a difference to their condition.

“There is a significant time commitment and it’s not a quick fix for their asthma but we rely on patients to help with research like this - without them, we wouldn’t be able to develop new treatments.”

Consultant chest physician Richard Harrison said: “I would like to encourage patients who think they may match the criteria to contact the respiratory research nurses.

This is a new and potentially exciting new treatment which could advance the management of difficult asthma.”

Under the spotlight to encourage others to sign up to research The trust’s respiratory research nurses and some of their patients went under the spotlight to encourage more people with breathing conditions to sign up to research studies.

The respiratory research team are continually recruiting patients who have different conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and emphysema to new research trials, which aim to help treat patients and further advance medicines in the future.

Respiratory research nurse June Battram said: “We’re very grateful to everyone who not only signs up to take part in research, but to those who are helping to spread the word and encourage others to take part.

“Every part of research is important, whether it is completing a questionnaire or taking part in testing a new treatment. People can be as involved as they want to be. It’s quite a large commitment for some studies, but for others we might just need patients to come in for a blood test or even send a questionnaire out to them at home. It is very worthwhile.”

Patients who do decide to take part are very well supported along the way. Respiratory research nurse Nicky Bateman continued: “We have focus groups four times a year and we invite all of our patients who are involved in research or have shown any interest to come along and discuss what they’ve been involved in and what they’d like to be involved in. us supporting them and getting them to support each other.”

Research and development manager Jane Greenaway added: “Over the last few years we have seen real increases in the number of patients taking part in research and that’s something we’re obviously really grateful to patients for because although the research they take part in may not benefit them initially it will benefit patients in the future.

“Patients should be reassured that if they’re approached to take part that they’ll be fully informed about the research, that it will have been approved by a research ethics committee and by the research and development department at the trust.”

Consultant chest physician Richard Harrison said: “It is important that as many patients as possible are invited into research projects.

It is the only way to find out which drugs should be used for which patients and also how to evaluate new treatments which will benefit new patients who have either been untreatable or have been treated with the wrong sorts of drugs.

“From my point of view, we can evaluate new treatments so we know how best to use them and from a patients’ point of view, it means that they know they’ll be getting the best treatment.”

Hospital first in region to carry out new type of surgery for women

The spooky day was welcomed by the children, who dressed in scary outfits and had enjoyed getting messy in sandpits that had been converted from sand into coloured slime.

The pre-school also got to take part in making their own chocolate apples.

Nursery manager Janet Bland said: “The children had a lot of fun with some spooky themed activities. The slime pit was especially liked by the toddlers who enjoyed playing with the messy goo.”

The University Hospital of Hartlepool is the first in the North East to be carrying out a pioneering new method of surgery for women that means patients can go home the same day.

The surgery is for women who no longer want to be able to get pregnant, are experiencing heavy periods or who have polyps in the uterus that need removing.

It has a range of benefits to patients - it can be carried out under local anaesthetic meaning women can walk in and out of hospital the same day, the recovery period is shorter and potential risks are reduced.

Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Somendra Roy said: “We are the only department in the region and one of the very few in the whole country to be using all of these hysteroscopic outpatient procedures.

“They offer a number of benefits including not requiring the patient to stay overnight in hospital. The operation is no more than 30 minutes and the patient can leave shortly afterwards.

“The recovery period is also very short and the risks of the operation are smaller than they ever have been before – no incision wound is caused because the procedures are done through the normal birth passage and general anaesthetic is not needed.

The operation is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning the patient can return home the same day.

“I’d like to thank all of the excellent staff who have helped make it possible for us to perform this procedure here.

“All of the patients who have had the procedure have so far been very satisfied with it.”

The three different types of surgery have been carried out at Hartlepool since June.

They are:

- Hysteroscopic sterilisation is a method of permanent birth control for women who no longer want to be able to get pregnant.

- Hysteroscopic resections of polyps – is a procedure that involves the removal of small benign growths from the uterus.

- And endometrial ablation is a procedure that involves the removal of the lining of the womb to help treat women who suffer from heavy painful periods.

Kelly Cranney from Hartlepool was one of the first patients to have hysteroscopic sterilisation at the hospital.

This involves a small telescopic instrument (hysteroscope) being introduced into the womb. A small flexible micro-coil is then placed in each fallopian tube to block the tubes, preventing sperm from reaching the egg.

She said: “I knew women who had had a different procedure carried out who had experienced a lot of pain and had been in hospital overnight afterwards.

“I had a totally different experience. It was a simple operation under local anaesthetic that didn’t last long and I was able to go home the same day and get back to normal life very quickly. I feel very fortunate to have been able to have this procedure at my local hospital.”

The traditional methods used when having these procedures - laparascopic sterilisation, endometrial ablation (radio frequency or thermal) and removal of uterine polyps – are still available for patients but these need to be performed under general anaesthetic and result in a longer stay in hospital for the patient.

The drive to increase the number of staff having the annual flu saw more than 600 staff vaccinated in the first week, as the occupational health and wellbeing team, together with ward vaccinators, provided convenient clinics and visits to wards to offer the vaccination to all staff and volunteers.

Head of occupational health and wellbeing Jude Cooper, who led the campaign, said: “We wanted to encourage staff to protect themselves, their family and their patients against flu by having the vaccination.

“People often make the mistake of thinking they’re fit and healthy so flu won’t affect them, but just a few years ago the flu outbreak claimed more than 600 lives in the UK, with more than 70% of the deaths

Experts from across the world gathered for the annual Teesside neonatal cardiology and haemodynamics conference.

The two-day event at Wynyard Rooms was organised by the trust’s consultant neonatologist Samir Gupta and four other consultants from across trusts in the North East.

The event included presentations from international experts on controversial issues, ethics, research and evidence based practices.

The conference also included separate demonstrations from three experts who used real hearts which had congenital defects.

Topics covered included fluid management in preterm babies, counselling parents of babies with heart problems, cardiac morphology and echocardiography, and the effect of ventilation on circulation in sick infants.

Consultant neonatologist Samir Gupta said: “Our speakers from all across the UK and abroad were medical experts working at the leading edge of care in neonatal, cardiology and haemodynamics and it was excellent to hear the work and research they are doing to provide the very highest quality care for these patients.

“We received excellent feedback from the many delegates who attended the conference and it certainly put our area on the map as a centre for excellence in these medical fields.”

Professor Gupta, who is UK lead for the neonatal haemodynamics research group and the deputy lead for Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN) North East, was the conference director.

“It’s very important for staff to get the vaccination to minimise the risks of developing the flu when they’re exposed to patients who have flu themselves and to prevent themselves carrying the flu virus to others including their friends, family, other patients and relatives.”

To lead the way, the chief executive and executive directors had their vaccination to encourage staff to get theirs.

Jude continued: “It takes a couple of weeks after getting the vaccination to get immunity, so we wanted to encourage staff to get vaccinated early. Flu can be serious and even fatal, even for normally fit and well people, so that’s why the campaign was so important to protect ourselves and our patients.”

Doctors conference is great success Wynyard Hall welcomed SAS doctors in October for an annual conference which identified good working practice and discussed successful job planning.

The full day’s event was organised by orthopaedic consultants Bob Singh and Raj Logishetty as part of the British Medical Association and attracted more than 40 delegates from around the region.

Included within the programme were presentations on equality and diversity, leadership and management skills and

successful job planning.

Also introducing the conference was medical director David Emerton who delivered a current overview on the latest NHS reports and thanked those who offered their support during the trust’s recent transformation moves.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Raj Logishetty said “The event has been a great success. The conference has been very informative for all who attended and we could not have asked for a nicer venue.”

Caring for patients with condition that affects walking and speech Medical experts from across the country gathered at a prestigious conference in Wynyard to talk about a muscle condition that can make it difficult to walk, move or talk.

Paediatricians and other health professionals attended the Northern Spasticity Symposium 2013, held at Wynyard Rooms recently.

A host of expert speakers gave presentations over the course of the day about spasticity – a condition that causes an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness, which might interfere with movement and speech and cause discomfort or pain.

It was very interesting to meet and speak to so many people who are doing so much work to treat this condition.

The course director of the event was the trust’s consultant paediatrician Beena Kurup.

Consultant neonatologist Sundaram Janakiraman and consultant paediatric neurologist Venkateswaran Ramesh from the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle were part of the organising team along with event manager Sheila Johnson.

Beena Kurup said: “It was very interesting to meet and speak to so many people who are doing so much work to treat this condition.

“The speakers who appeared were all medical experts working at the leading edge of care for patients with spasticity.

in children with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. It makes the muscles contract, which become stiff or spasm involuntarily.

“It’s something that can lead to musculoskeletal and joint deformities, making it difficult to function normally in your everyday life.

Events like this mean health professionals in this area can share their knowledge and learn from each other.

“These patients need pain relief, and help in improving their mobility with reduction of excess tone and stiffness so they can function from day to day.

“Events like this mean health professionals in this area can share their knowledge and learn from each other, which ultimately means we can help more patients.”

Speakers involved included professor Paul McArthur, consultant plastic surgeon from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Andrew Roberts from The Robert Jones and St. Agnes Hunt Hospital and Charlie Fairhurst from Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Effects of spasticity include:

• muscle tightness • joint stiffness • involuntary jerky movements • exaggeration of reflexes • unusual posture • abnormal positioning of fingers, wrists, arms, or shoulders • muscle spasms • involuntary crossing of the legs difficulty, controlling the muscles used to speak • muscle contraction that limits your range of motion or prevents your joints from extending all the way • pain in the affected muscles and joints • back pain • difficulty moving A range of medications can be used to treat spasticity which can act as muscle relaxants, a sedative, a nerve blocker or can calm spasms and tight muscles.

Many medications are used to treat spasticity, including: • botulinum toxin (injected directly into spastic muscles) • baclofen (muscle relaxant) • diazepam (sedative) • phenol (nerve blocker).

• tizanidine (calms spasms and relaxes tight muscles)

Assessment and management of spasticity with botulinum toxin treatment, which is injected directly into spastic muscles, is something offered to patients at the trust.

Thank you to the League of Friends The department of nutrition and dietetics has thanked the League of Friends after they received a very kind donation.

The donation of £2,222 is just one of many generous donations made by the hospital’s League of Friends, who provide amazing support to the trust. The money will be used to upgrade a vital piece of software called Diet Plan 6.0, which will be used to benefit all of the patients treated by the team.

Clinical lead dietitian Julie Higgins said: “We’re extremely grateful to the League of Friends and I’d like to say a big thank you to them for their generosity. This programme will really will make a huge difference to all of our patients.”

A healthy lifestyle helps Linda raise cash for charity With the support of the trust’s health trainer service, mum of two Linda Walker is leading a healthier lifestyle after losing more than three stone.

Following a routine healthy heart check at her GP surgery Linda, 55 from Thornaby, was referred to the trust’s service.

Before Linda didn’t do any exercise and she was eating the wrong foods. She said: “After years of smoking, I had stopped the year before and I had gained four stone since.

I didn’t feel like my overall health was very good and they referred me to the health trainer service.

“I was 14 ½ stone in January last year when I joined the 12 week programme. At first I was disappointed as the weight loss was really slow, but once I’d got over the first few months I started to see results.

“I started introducing exercise by using the Wii Fit at home and by going walking. I noticed the weight was starting to come off.

I felt more comfortable to start doing more exercise, but I didn’t want to go to the gym, so I started swimming at my local swimming pool in Thornaby.

“I started by doing 20 lengths. I was determined. Now every morning I go to the pool at 7.30am and I swim one mile. I don’t leave until I’ve achieved it.

“That’s when I decided I’d do a sponsored swim to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, which is a charity very close to my heart. I did 100 lengths in one hour 20 minutes and raised £250 for the charity.

“I never used to enjoy shopping for clothes but now I really enjoy it. It’s nice to receive compliments about the way I look. I’m much happier with my weight now but I’m going to

keep on going.

Popular Sandra retires after 34 years at the trust More than one hundred colleagues gathered to say goodbye to popular physiotherapist Sandra Wilkinson, who retired from the trust after 34 years service.

Dedicated Sandra only had one break from working to have her daughter and only one day off sick during her whole career. Sandra spent much of her career working with elderly patients at the University Hospital of North Tees.

Sandra was an advocate for the service and represented the team on many committees, where she spoke passionately and proudly about physiotherapy. Her dedicated and caring attitude will continue into retirement, where she plans to work voluntarily for Age UK. Speaking at her celebrations, specialist services manager Steve Pett said: “Sandra is a well respected member of staff and an example of professionalism. We would like to all wish Sandra good wishes for a happy and well deserved retirement.”

The special care baby unit is viewed by staff Following the official opening of the refurbished special care baby unit (SCBU) in the summer, staff were invited to have a look around and discuss the new available facilities.

The unit has been refurbished and moved into a larger room so that the number of intensive care cots could be doubled and a higher quality of service could be provided.

Deputy director of nursing, Julie Lane said: “It’s been a nice opportunity for staff who had yet to see the new facilities to get the chance to look around and have other colleagues explain just what sort of improvements have been made to our special care baby unit.

“We’re all very proud of the facilities and the improvement that it has made to our services for sick babies and their families.”

Popular Barbara retires Staff said tearful goodbyes to ward matron Barbara Kreczak who retired.

Barbara, who worked in ward 26 at the University Hospital of North Tees, was presented with gifts, flowers and cards by staff and friends at a gathering on her last day.

We would like to wish Barbara a very happy retirement.

Staff talk about assisted conception Experts in assisted conception gathered for a conference that was hosted by the staff from the University Hospital of Hartlepool’s assisted reproduction unit (ARU).

The event at the Hartlepool College of Further Education started with an introduction from clinical lead for the unit Hany Mostafa and included presentations from professors, doctors and counsellors.

In front of an audience of around 60 delegates, professor Richard Fleming gave the first speech, talking about the challenges of low ovarian reserves in the treatment of fertility.

This was then followed with a presentation from doctor Steven Fleming about optimising outcomes in the laboratory.

After lunch professor Geeta Nargund talked about issues that can prevent mild and natural IVF being carried out.

This was followed by a speech from Stephen Troup about time-lapse imaging systems, before doctor Jordana Moody and Hany Mostafa spoke about recurrent implantation failure review.

The day finished with a speech by counsellor Janet Owen about a woman’s experience of going through the process of assisted conception.

Getting into the festive spirit Children perform Nativity over Christmas Staff and parents were in for a treat over christmas when children from the University Hospital of North Tees day nursery performed two nativities.

Children from the day nursery at the University Hospital of North Tees enjoyed raising money in December for Save the Children - by wearing some snazzy Christmas jumpers!

Special party for little miracles Mums, dads and their little miracles were invited to a very special Christmas party at the University Hospital of Hartlepool when the trust’s assisted reproduction unit celebrated its successes with parents and their children born using assisted conception.

Families were treated to a festive get together with a surprise visit from Santa.

Principal embryologist Dave Gibbon said: “Christmas is such a special time and we’re delighted to be celebrating with so many families at our annual event. We know that all babies are precious but for people who have had problems conceiving the arrival of their baby is a very special event.”

Clinical lead for the unit Hany Mostafa said: “This event is the best day of the year for us. It’s great to be able to celebrate with the parents and their families, but also for us to stay in touch with everyone to make

sure they are supported once they’ve had their babies.

“Last year we invested £40,000 in the latest hi-tech equipment so that couples get the best chance of becoming parents.

We have an incubator which can store embryos for up to five days at low oxygen levels, which increases the chance of couples conceiving.

“We are also using an intracytoplastic sperm injection (ICSI) machine which allows experts here to inject sperm into an egg under a microscope. It’s a very modern piece of equipment which allows us to be very precise and increase the success rate of that procedure, which is very good news for our patients. We are using the most up to date fertility techniques here and we are seeing good results.”

Michael Community stroke team leader Michael Chivhunga has graduated with an MSc in advanced clinical practice (neuro rehabilitation) from the University of Teesside.

Michael, who was the first occupational therapist to join the community stroke team when it was developed in 2005, completed the course over three years while he continued to work full time.

Nursery gets involved in Children in Need day Children of all ages in the Rainbow day nursery at the University Hospital of Hartlepool have enjoyed taking part in some fundraising and fun in aid of Children in Need.

All the children enjoyed decorating Pudsey and helping to sell lots of cakes to go towards Children in Need fundraising.

Some of the children also enjoyed dressing up in Pudsey themed clothing.

Nursery manager Janet Bland said: “We all had a nice day getting crafty and raising some money towards Children in Need.

I’d like to thank everyone who came to the nursery during the day and bought some of the cakes on sale, we managed to raise £130.”

I have always worked in neuro rehabilitation and I really enjoy caring for stroke patients.

He said: “I have always worked in neuro rehabilitation and I really enjoy caring for stroke patients, so it was only natural to develop my skills to continue to provide the best service I can.

“It was very demanding working and studying, but I was very fortunate that my manager supported me through it and that I work with a fantastic dedicated team.

“My graduation day was one to remember and it was really good to be able to share that with my family. My seven year old son was with me too and I hope being there will inspire him.”

Therapy services operational lead Steve Pett said: “There is no doubt that this has been hard work and I am very proud of Michael’s achievement, he is a credit to the team.”

Positive feedback for volunteer drivers The new volunteer driver scheme that offers transport to patients going to and from appointments has already come in for praise.

The scheme was set up recently to help people who have difficulty getting to either of the trust’s two hospital sites for appointments.

All drivers have received training, uniforms, ID badges and have undergone a check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (formally CRB).

Allan Mains from Wheatley Hill is one of the drivers whose names has already been mentioned by patients in feedback given to the trust.

Part of the feedback, from a carers’ group in Hartlepool, said: “We found the service very easy to book for our carer – we gave the travel needs of a carer and cared for person who needed to go to the University Hospital of North Tees for a dental appointment late one afternoon.

“They informed us of the driver’s name, time of the driver’s arrival and explained that the driver would wait until the end of the appointment and return the carer and cared for person home again.

“The carer said his experience was spot

on. Allan arrived a little early to make sure we got there on time. He waited in a designated waiting room when we had the appointment and took us back home. We got home by 6pm.”

Father of three and grandfather of five Allan, 61, is an electrical engineer who - along with wife Susan, 59, who was a carer for 10 years

– has always been a helpful person.

He said: “My job has always been about interacting with people and helping people when they need a job doing.

“To be a good engineer you have to be reliable, logical and have good people skills.

“My wife is the same – we have both always liked to help people, whether they are neighbours, friends or people we don’t know.

“I seem to have had positive feedback from the patients I have met here. I think that’s basically because I am friendly and I always make sure I get them to their appointment with plenty of time to spare.”

Reg Ramsden said: “I am very pleased with the team of drivers we have recruited.

“The feedback from patients has been very positive – which isn’t a surprise at all, but is still very pleasing nonetheless.

“We want to make sure that patients and carers know that the service is available to them and that we have drivers who are on standby to take people to their hospital appointments.

“They provide a very professional service for us and we want to ensure that patients who need transport make use of this service.”

Weight loss surgery clinics start in Hartlepool Clinics for patients who are set to have weight loss surgery are being held in Hartlepool.

The clinics are being run from the main outpatients department at the University Hospital of Hartlepool for patients who are due to have surgery.

Since the service began in 2012 the trust has received 455 referrals and carried out 180 procedures for weight loss surgery including gastric (stomach) bypass, gastric sleeve and gastric balloon.

Bariatric specialist nurse Sara Close (pictured below) explained: “We’re delighted

to be running the clinics for patients in Hartlepool to make the service more accessible.

There are certain criteria which the patients must meet to be able to have weight loss surgery.

“People are referred to the service by their GP for their first appointment. This first appointment at the University Hospital of North Tees is a seminar, where people find out what is involved in having weight loss surgery.

“Then we meet the patients on their own for an assessment.

be able to have weight loss surgery. Patients need a body mass index (BMI) of over 35 and health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure or a BMI of over 40 and no health problems.

“People have to lose 10% of their excess body weight before surgery to show their commitment to making permanent lifestyle changes.

“We need to know these patients are suitable physically and emotionally, before going ahead. That’s why there is a specialist team, including a psychologist to help and provide the right support for our patients.

“We’re using specialist keyhole techniques which mean that patients are on their way home from hospital just a few days after the surgery.”

Top of the class Five young men on the NHS estates apprenticeship proved they’re top of the class at an awards do.

The Northern and Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre, which runs the estates apprenticeship programme

for NHS organisations in the region, recognises the efforts of the best apprentice in each of the four years and also awards a cup for the best apprentice overall for the whole four years – the Health Estate and Facilities Management Association (Hefma) apprenticeship of the year award.

That coveted prize went to the trust’s very own electrical engineer Marc Johnson.

Medical engineer Thomas Alder from County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust won the first year apprentice cup.

Mechanical engineer Daniel Munroe from Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust won the second year apprentice cup.

Trust won the third year apprentice cup.

Electrical engineer Saul Waddleton from Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust won the fourth year apprentice cup.

The cups were awarded at a special ceremony held at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Competition for the Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre apprenticeship programme is high.

In total, 48 apprentices received certificates on the night.

Centre manager Eileen Bayles, who runs the scheme on behalf of the regional NHS, said: “Since it started in 1974 this programme has seen nearly 400 apprentices through the top class estates training needed in the modern NHS. All the apprentices are stars to me so I’m glad I wasn’t on the judging panel this year because

there were some tough decisions to be made.

“These guys are the crème de la crème of engineers and I know they will go on to have a major role in keeping our NHS buildings, all the water, electrical and heating systems, joinery – and all of the complex medical equipment found in the modern hospital – well maintained and safe for patients and the staff providing care.

“The scheme is successful because the apprentices know they have to work hard all the way through, but they also know the rewards are great. They get great support from their parents and families as well as from their own organisation. Every year we see how the apprentices progress and it makes me really proud to see them develop their skills as they go through the scheme.”

Jill determined to carry on helping hospital in Tanzania A sister at the University Hospital of Hartlepool is continuing her work to help a hospital in south east Africa following a recent visit.

During her latest visit last month Jill spent two weeks working in the hospital – helping staff care for patients.

Jill also ran classes for staff about first aid and taught them the values of the 6Cs (care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment) that staff in the NHS follow.

She was also able to see a system recently installed that has allowed the hospital to have access to running water for the first time ever.

Jill said: “Every time I return to Kilimatinde Hospital I am able to see how much things have improved.

“This is a hospital that only a few years ago didn’t even have beds for patients and as

recently as earlier this year didn’t even have access to running water.

“They have come a long way but they have so much more that needs to be done.”

Jill is working closely with Kilimatinde Hospital’s children’s ward to raise funds for them to buy new equipment.

Items they need include medication trolleys, screens for bed areas, thermometers, drip stands, pulse oximeters, oxygen machines and weighing scales.

They also need blankets, bed sheets, draw sheets and mosquito nets.

The hospital is also in desperate need of renovation – with money needed for ceiling boards, a sewage system, sinks and taps to be replaced, new windows and doors,

Jill added: “I am going to continue to visit Kilimatinde in the future and plan to go back again in April.

“I’d like to thank all staff and visitors in the trust who have supported this cause by donating at fundraising events.

This money – along with funding raised by other health trusts and charities – has already made a huge difference.”

Jill will be holding a cake stall in the medical rehabilitation day unit on the last Monday of every month to help raise funds.

To mark the Working Families’ National Work Life Week the trust promoted the importance of having a work life balance.

A week long event organised by the human resources department saw departments from the trust and organisations promoting health, wellbeing, fitness and how to lead a healthier lifestyle along with some practical advice on pensions, home fire safety and childcare.

Senior human resources manager and improving working lives lead Tracy Minns said: “The trust is committed to helping employees achieve a work life balance. Achieving a work life balance is all about looking after your health and wellbeing at work and outside of work.

This event was a fantastic

opportunity for us to share some of the things we’re doing as a trust to support staff in achieving this.

Clinical staff from orthopaedic outpatients at the University Hospital of Hartlepool are grateful for the difference a new reception desk has made in improving the patient journey.

A badge of honour A member staff at the University Hospital of North Tees has been honoured for 25 years voluntary work for the British Red Cross.

Sandra Lancaster, who works as a secretary for the infection control team, has been a valued active member of Red Cross for many years and was awarded for all her hard work at a presentation night at their senior management team roadshow.

Sandra said: “I first started a first aid course with the Red Cross in 1988 because I wanted to know more about how to care for my baby daughter, who was just 13 weeks old at the time, and later my son too.

“It’s so much more than just sticking a plaster on, we have continuous rounds of mandatory training each year to ensure that we have enough skills to perform any tasks thrown our way.

“But because of this I’ve been able to a variety of work, including ambulance aid work, providing services at public events like the Great North Run and becoming a first

aid instructor. Our training also includes safer handling, safeguarding and documentation there is always plenty to do and to learn!”

The presentation took place on the 24 October at the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground and Sandra received her award and personal thanks from the chief executive of the British Red Cross Nick Young.

“The night was lovely and it was nice to be acknowledged for everything. Volunteering for the Red Cross requires massive dedication but it has been greatly rewarding over my 25 years as you really get to help make a difference. The vast opportunities within healthcare organisations and experience I have gained while volunteering over the years also helped me into my current job in the NHS. “I am very grateful for the opportunities, interesting job roles I have had and lovely people I have met.”

Staff welcomed the reception desk in September and are glad for the marked improvement it has made to the running of the department.

Orthopaedic outpatients department matron Tracy Noble, who works across both hospital sites, said: “Originally, the patient would have to go to the main reception in outpatients, before coming to our own area to hand in their appointment slip. It seemed logical to join both steps together to create a more efficient and improved patient journey. Now patients can come directly to our department and we have a designated receptionist to greet them.

“For years health assistants and nurses have acted as admin in between treating patients and helping with the running of clinics and we wanted to create a more efficient and pleasant patient journey.”

Healthcare assistant June Wilson, who works within the department, added: “It really is brilliant. We are more efficient and we can focus on providing the best care for our patients.”

Hospital supports local creativity with film short The University Hospital of North Tees contributed the use of one of its wards to a zero budget film in September.

The film short called, the primacy of consciousness (TPOC) was shot by north-east based company Last Dime Studios, and will be shown at the Cannes film festival in 2014.

The film is a psychological drama which begins with two people at the brink of death. It is a short film based around six scenes which explores the power of consciousness and if it can return to the host after an outer body experience.

The team of over 30 people came in during September and took over Ward 29 for a day of filming, as part of a six day shoot, following their nine month pre-production stage.

A generous donation for Macmillan nurses Macmillan nurses at the University Hospital of North Tees received a generous donation from Bev Clements and Pam Edwards at the end of November, as a thank you for the excellent ongoing care Bev’s mother has been receiving.

It was a really great afternoon and all the children involved were wonderful.

Bev works at Billingham South Community Primary School as a support base for children with learning difficulties

and, with the help of the headteacher Pam Edwards and some of the children, hosted a Macmillan coffee afternoon recently.

Pam said: “It was a really great afternoon and all the children involved were wonderful. They helped in selling tea and coffee to all the parents and we raised a staggering amount of money in only an hour.”

Bev added: “It was a great opportunity for the kids to get involved and they really seemed to enjoy it. We held the coffee afternoon an hour before end of school day so parents came along a bit earlier than usual and bought tea and cakes.

“We also held a raffle and the generosity of the parents was very touching, with many

of the parents requesting that prizes they had won be re-entered so that more tickets could be sold.”

In only an hour the school managed to raise £747 for Macmillan.

Bev said “Macmillan nurse Mags Lundberg has been invaluable in offering support to my mother. Making sure that

my mother can make the most of the time she has left and can continue to live life how she wants to.

“Mags really knows what she’s doing and without the continuing support of Macmillan nurses, attempting to do what I could for my mother all alone would be a very scary prospect.”

Victoria’s Wish donates toys to children’s ward and brings along Santa too!

Children and staff from the children’s ward at the University Hospital of North Tees had a visit from Santa and a generous donation of toys from charity Victoria’s Wish.

The Victoria’s Wish charity was created by Ian and Lynne Lawrence after the sudden death of their daughter Victoria Marie Lawrence, who was training to be a paediatric nurse and had worked her first night shift at the ward.

The charity offers help to sick children and their families, helping with grants, days out and donations and currently supports in excess of 60 families.

Victoria’s mother, Lynne Lawrence, said: “Victoria had often visited hospital children’s wards when she was younger and her sister was sick. Since the age of seven she had always 30 Anthem | Winter 2013/2014

wanted to be a paediatric nurse and I never saw her happier than when she started training to be one.

“The charity was originally set up because we wanted to offer pantomimes each year to

children’s wards and services and it just took off from there. It’s a very special way of celebrating our daughter’s memory and being able to contribute positively to an important cause.”

after staff nurse Michelle Penketh, who knew and worked alongside Victoria, sent a message out on facebook asking friends and family if they had any toys they could donate to the children’s ward.

The charity then donated £550 worth of toys to the ward, along with a wooden nativity scene to add to the children’s wards Christmas decorations.

Santa also came along to meet all the children on the ward, ask what they wanted from him this year and wish them a Merry Christmas.

Ian added: “It’s important to keep Victoria’s name going and in our thoughts. We know she would have loved all the events and fundraising we have been a part of.”

New treatments have changed their life Many people think that painful conditions of the muscles, joints and bones known as rheumatological conditions only affect older people, but that’s not the case.

In this issue of Anthem we tell the story of two patients who have received treatment at the trust which has changed their lives.

Toni’s story Mum Toni Bryan, 25 from Thornaby was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis two years ago. At first it was extremely difficult to get about. Toni couldn’t believe that she could have rheumatoid arthritis at such a young age, so she didn’t go to see her GP straight away.

Toni explained: “It stopped me doing a lot of things. I needed help getting dressed, it took me longer to get down the stairs, I couldn’t fasten buttons – but I wasn’t just struggling with basic everyday tasks with myself, but also my young son, who I couldn’t sit on the floor to change him and get him dressed. It was just really difficult.

Consultant rheumatologist Vipul Vagadia explained: “Toni was given appropriate treatment including steroids and injections for the first three months.

“Within six months she could walk from a few hundred yards to half a mile. Despite this, it was not making a huge impact on the quality of her life. That’s when we started on the biological treatment – a newer type of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. However, getting that treatment early is really important.”

Toni continued: “I now have an injection that I do myself every week at home. Life is so much better. All of the swelling has gone down in my wrists, my knees and my ankles. I couldn’t walk very far before; I could just walk to my car. Now, I go to the gym four times a week, which was never possible before and I can run about with my little boy.”

Mahesh’s story

Mahesh Shivhare, from Gateshead was diagnosed a number of years ago with a condition called ankylosing spondylitis, which is type of chronic arthritis which causes an inflammation of the spine.

I have no problems now at all. My quality of life has really improved.

He said: “I had been suffering from this for quite a long time. It started when my right knee began swelling. I thought it might have been some kind of injury or something I had done through sport. At the time I was about 14. Then my other knee also started swelling and my back started hurting. I could not walk properly. I knew then that something was really wrong. Every morning I would have to take two or three painkillers.

Consultant rheumatologist Vipul Vagadia explained: “I first met Mahesh in 2011.

By that time he had developed a spinal deformity and he was really struggling.

“It’s very important for people who are particularly under 40 and have ongoing back pain to get referred to us from their GP early, so that we can start treatment. Getting treatment early can prevent problems later.”

Mahesh continued: “I have no problems now at all. My quality of life has really improved, I work full time and I drive 30 miles each way for my work with no problems at all.

“Previously I used to think I might have to stop every 30 minutes. I haven’t had any pain since I started this new medication and my quality of life has really improved.

I can go to the gym; I can jog for three miles and go out with friends. My life is completely different now.”

Holdforth unit opens Director of nursing, patient safety and quality Cath Siddle and Hartlepool governor Maureen Rogers had their scissors at the ready to officially open the Holdforth Unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

The unit was opened in October following the centralisation of critical care and general medicine at the University Hospital of North Tees. It means that patients from the Hartlepool and Easington area who are admitted as a medical emergency to the University Hospital of North Tees can be transferred to the unit for the final part of their hospital stay. This makes it more convenient for loved ones to visit and provides dedicated rehabilitation away from busy medical wards.

Consultant physician Chris Ward (pictured below) said: “We can provide the medical, therapy and nursing care to get patients back on their feet. This is an excellent facility for Hartlepool and Easington patients and their families.”

Director of nursing, patient safety and quality Cath Siddle added: “This is the type of ward I looked after during my early years as a nurse more than 30 years ago. It’s very patient centred and provides a great services where doctors, nurses and therapists work closely together to take care of patients. I’m incredibly pleased and proud we have this facility which is a great benefit for local people.”

Trust comes 4th in national hip fracture mortality league Success down to team effort, says clinical director

The trust has been rated fourth in the country for its mortality performance on fractured neck of femur in a recent report by the National Hip Fracture Database. This means the trust has one of the lowest death rates in the country for patients who have had a hip fracture The database is funded by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) as part of the national clinical audit and patient outcomes programme. It is designed to look at the areas which add up to successful treatment and follow-on care, highlight the work of the successful trusts and also identify hospitals where the standards are not being met.

The report, which covers the year 2012/13, showed that patients were receiving very high standards of care from the team at the University Hospital of North Tees and the follow on care from the trust’s community staff.

The report looked at: • data completeness, in other words is the information recorded accurately and completely • admission to orthopaedic department within four hours • surgery within 48 hours • pre-operative assessment with a geriatrician (doctor or consultant specialising in the care of elderly people) • pressure ulcers (sores) • bone health medication assessment • falls assessment • mean length of acute stay (the average number of days spent in hospital) The trust was above the north east and national performance in all but two of the above and patient satisfaction levels are high.

Clinical director for orthopaedics at the trust Chris Tulloch said: “As people are living longer we are seeing more people fall and fracture their hips.

“It is especially important for this group of patients, who tend to be vulnerable and often have a number of other medical conditions, that they not only get assessed and admitted quickly but they also have their operation

quickly and receive all the after and follow-on care they need to give them the very best chance of a good recovery.

“It’s also vital to give patients who’ve had a fall the support and information they need to prevent future falls and for them to be seen by a doctor specialising in the care of elderly patients so any related medical issues can be addressed.

“This is a testament to staff in accident and emergency, orthopaedics, elderly care medicine and our community and therapy teams. It truly is a team effort to achieve these standards and everyone should be congratulated for working together to meet the needs of patients.

“Most importantly this means that patients and their families can be reassured that, if they should be unfortunate enough to be affected by a hip fracture, they will receive the very highest standards of care at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.”

Olive home safe and sound after hip op

Hartlepool resident Olive Lowes, 87, had just popped out to get her washing off the line when she slipped and fell in her back garden.

She knew straightaway something was wrong and it took her an hour to shuffle back to the house and get help. After phoning a friend the ambulance was called and she was brought straight to the accident and emergency department at the University Hospital of North Tees. She was admitted to ward 32 and had her operation soon afterwards.

After a pleasant week’s stay in hospital - she shared a four bedded bay with the other ladies who had also had hip replacements and were nick named The Golden Girls by the staff on the ward – Olive was ready to go home.

She’d had the assessments recommended to enable her to make a good recovery and her home was fitted with all the adaptations needed to make her life comfortable so she could get back on her feet.

“Everyone’s been brilliant,” she said, “I’ve been fed very well, too well! All the staff are lovely. I couldn’t fault the care I’ve received, in hospital and at home.”

Taboo subjects handled with sensitivity and care at member event Organ donation and mortuary and bereavement services were on the agenda at the last member event.

The comments were overwhelmingly positive with those attending thinking that these often taboo subjects had been handled with sensitivity and care.

Organ and tissue donation

Chair of the trust’s organ donation committee Ken Lupton introduced specialist nurse, organ donation (SNOD), Clare Fletcher who explained about her role. Clare told the audience that the UK was falling behind in organ and tissue donation and in 2008 a taskforce made a number of recommendations to increase organ donation and achieve a target of a 50 per cent increase in the number of donations by this year. The recommendations included placing SNODs in each hospital to raise awareness, train staff and support the family and staff through the donation process. The taskforce report also recommended setting up an organ donation committee and introducing the role of clinical lead, organ donation (CLOD). The 50 per cent target was reached. The UK still lags behind other European countries but the North East has the highest rate of organ donation. There is now a strategy in place to further increase organ donation.

Clare explained that it is also possible to donate tissue such as bone, skin, cartilage, heart valves and eyes. Clare went on to explain what they can be used for and she gave examples of how tissue donation can transform people’s lives.

She said it was very important to remember donors and she brought along one of the four regional quilts which show squares given by the families of loved ones to acknowledge their gift to others. She also talked about the organ donation art work the trust

commissioned which provides a focus for those who have lost loved ones and those whose lives have been transformed by the gift of an organ or tissue. Clare invited people to join the organ donor register but also, importantly, to tell their loved ones they had done this so if the time ever came then the family would know their wishes.

everyone in their care as a patient and they were taken care of with the utmost dignity while in the mortuary. She showed photos of the mortuaries at both sites, including the reception area, post mortem rooms and viewing rooms.

She explained about opening hours and the on call service in the mortuary which means a member of staff can be available when needed. The talked about the bereavement service which is set up to provide practical support to the bereaved and, while it is not a counselling service, staff use skills such as listening and empathy with family and friends of the deceased. She told members that mortuary is part of the pathology directorate and she explained about the very stringent monitoring and scrutiny of the service.

She shared some of the comments of inspectors which were every complimentary and a source of pride for not only staff in the department but the whole trust. Michelle’s team work with the tissue donation teams and assist when tissues are removed from deceased patients in the post mortem rooms. She explained that the rooms were comparable to operating theatres for these procedures and the dignity of the patient was preserved at all times. She talked about a number of improvements to the service and the team’s plans for the future which included a bereavement pack for relatives and further support for staff when a patient dies.

Big HUGs for unit after visit Members of the Health User Group (HUG) visited the new Holdforth unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool as part of a routine inspection of services.

Volunteers Ray Stephenson and Peter Wilkinson spent a morning in the hospital’s radiology department before visiting the new Holdforth unit for a tour and then to sample lunch food served to patients.

that will support their individual needs and help them recover so they can return home.

Ray said: “We had a very productive morning visiting two areas of the hospital, looking around at how services are run and speaking to patients and to staff.

“In radiology we both talked to several patients. These patients all gave positive feedback about their experience at the hospital.

“We then visited the new Holdforth unit – a ward that helps patients who are recovering from a period of hospital care.

“The ward seemed organised, staff seemed happy working there and patients who we spoke to were pleased with the level of care they were receiving.

“Feedback from patients about the food they had been served was also positive. There was a range of options for patients to choose from and people seemed happy with the time food was served in and the help they received from staff.

“During the visit I sampled some of the food myself and I have to agree that it was

a very good standard.”

On the same day members of HUG also visited radiology, the children’s ward, short stay unit and elderly care at the University Hospital of North Tees.

Every month members of HUG hold visits to services across both of the trust’s hospital sites.

Lunch is served

Children’s safeguarding team welcome new staff Two new members of staff have joined the children’s safeguarding team over the last few weeks.

Belinda Booth has been appointed as a named nurse for Peterlee, Easington and parts of County Durham and Wendy Murdoch has started her role as a safeguarding children trainer.

The two make up a team of eight staff who work to ensure all staff across the trust are aware of their responsibilities to do with safeguarding all unborn babies, children, young people and their families and understanding the signs of abuse and the procedures to follow in dealing with these issues and who to contact for advice and supervision.

“The role involves working with a wide range of people and organisations and I have already made many contacts since

children in need of safeguarding and protection and ensuring staff are trained in matters relating to this.

Wendy said: “My role involves developing, facilitating and evaluating safeguarding children training for staff to equip them with the skills and knowledge to identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns around a child or young person.”

The group of young adults aged between 16 and 22, who have all been receiving treatment from the University Hospital of North Tees for type 1 diabetes for many years, took part in a fun filled weekend at Carlton’s outdoor education centre in Cleveland.

I know they’ll be recommending it to others next year.

Specialist diabetes nurse Marie Presgrave, paediatric dietitian Becci Dunn and clinical psychologist Caroline Bryant led the group, as they took part in lots of outdoors activities.

Marie Presgrave said: “This is the first time we’ve run our own event and everyone really enjoyed it. We’re planning to run this every year for anyone who is aged between 16 and 25 with type 1 diabetes. It is all about helping the group get to know other people who are a similar age with type 1 diabetes and spend time with people who

understand their condition.

“It was a chance for us to educate the group, learning about different types of food, supporting them and giving them chance to ask questions.

“Everyone said it was a great opportunity to meet other people with type 1 diabetes, make new friends and support each other. I know they’ll be recommending it to others next year.”

The chemotherapy day unit at the University Hospital of North Tees received a generous donation from a grateful group of individuals after they raised money through a charity raffle night at the Billingham trade union and social (TUC) club.

Malcolm Hart, whose wife Pauline had received treatment at the chemotherapy unit, wanted to thank staff for the excellent care she had received and decided to raise some money for the unit in memory of Pauline.

He enlisted some help from mother-in-law Saina Hart, the chairman of Billingham TUC club Jim Corsar and secretary George Smith.

The group organised a big raffle night at the TUC club and had an assortment of prizes ranging from bottles of wine all

the way up to TVs. Saina Hart said: “It was a brilliant night and a really great way of keeping Pauline in our thoughts, who was very well liked and worked as a bar maid at the club. Everyone was really generous and we couldn’t have raised such a healthy amount without everyone’s help.”

Malcolm added: “We really are grateful to everyone within the chemotherapy unit for all the care they gave Pauline, and wanted to show all our thanks for their hard work. It was a positive way of remembering my wife and accomplishing something good that will benefit future patients.

The night was a great success and we managed to raise £2,050 for the chemotherapy unit.”

New uniforms for speech and language team

The adult speech and language therapy team are now wearing uniforms for the first time.

The team can now be seen wearing white tunics or polo shirts with job titles in purple embroidery and black trousers or skirts.

Head of adult speech and language therapy Gill Siddons said: “Staff in the team can now be seen wearing uniforms for the very first time and have really welcomed it. Feedback from patients and visitors has also been very positive.

“The uniforms are helping patients to more easily recognise us and help the team follow the trust’s infection control rules.”
