Marking one year with Covid-19 Since early March 2020 the team at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have worked tirelessly in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, fundamentally changing and adapting to how we manage essential care, how we provide treatment and even how we access our sites.

Now, one year on, I want to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all of my colleagues who have consistently delivered against all odds. It has been an extraordinary year, and at times we have all struggled to cope with the pressures and challenges, both in and out of work, and the fortitude and resilience needed to get through wave 1, wave 2 and wave 3 has been remarkable.

To me, this pandemic has demonstrated, without doubt, the value of the NHS and NHS values. What has also been apparent is how much support there is for the NHS. In the midst of all these challenges we have been supported by our local communities in Doncaster, Worksop and Retford, and together we have worked through very difficult times and I must extend my thanks to the people of our towns for their commitment to following guidelines and helping to keep themselves, their families and others safe. During the peaks of this pandemic, we were able to cope as the staff and communities efforts meant that the number of Covid patients requiring hospital and intensive care was lower than the worst case predictions.

We are also indebted to our communities for their generosity during this time. We have been overwhelmed by all of the donations we have received, whether these have been of a monetary nature, or the morale-boosting gifts that we have been able to hand out to our hard working colleagues.

Local businesses have also been most generous in offering their support to DBTH throughout the pandemic. Many businesses who were closed throughout the periods of lockdown offered their services exclusively to NHS staff and here in Doncaster and Bassetlaw our teams were supported by various food and drink outlets who provided sustenance and cosmetics companies who donated hand creams for staff.

Many of these businesses have also supported our charity appeal to fund memorial (Rainbow) gardens on our Bassetlaw and Doncaster sites.

These gardens will provide a quiet, tranquil place for people to go to and remember those we have lost.

Whilst the last 12 months have been an unexpected rollercoaster for all of us, it is these outpourings of support and community spirit that we will remember in years to come.

Where we are now As an organisation, we are continuing to see a steady decline in both new admissions related to Covid-19, and in Covid patients staying in hospital. Throughout February and the first

few weeks of March, the number of patients being treated with Covid in our hospitals has been dropping each week and, at the time of writing, we have under 30 Covid active patients in our care.

This update comes as our partners at NHS Doncaster CCG have just announced that the 100,000th Covid-19 vaccine has been successfully administered in the town. This means that almost one third of the entire population of Doncaster now has some level of immunity against this illness, a significant milestone of which we should all be proud.

Looking to the future Although at times I suspect we will have all wondered when the pandemic will end, I am now very optimistic that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

As we push forward with the national Covid19 vaccination programme, we expect to see hospital admission numbers continue to fall

and remain low into the future and we are feeling positive about the future.

However, that doesn’t mean we can relax just yet – there is still some distance left to run in this pandemic, and as such we must continue to follow the relevant guidance outlined in the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown whilst looking forward to some of the restrictions being eased so that we can begin the process of recovery.

I know that our ever-supportive communities will be behind us in this final leg and will do all they can to minimise any potential for Covid-19 to surge once again. As ever, we are extremely grateful for their commitment and so very proud of their efforts so far.

Finally, I should take this last opportunity to thank the dedicated workforce here at DBTH and commend their efforts which have resulted in over 2,300 patients (at time of writing on 12 March 2020) returning safely home after being treated for Covid-19.

Celebrating our staff

Laura Fitton Laura Fitton, one of our inspirational nurses, authored a book of poetry whilst off sick with Covid-19. Garnering esteemed success, Laura’s book was sold in order to raise funds for our charity. Laura’s poems cover a range of difficult subjects and emotions but radiate hope and a strong spirit throughout – we’re so proud of what she has achieved.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the Booking Team worked tirelessly to contact thousands of patients about their outpatient appointments. Many patients were upset, confused and scared but the team offered reassurance to them all and supported each other through this huge task.

Michael Leng Head Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology for the Trust, Michael Leng has worked tirelessly throughout 2020 and spearheaded the timely introduction of new molecular Real-Time PCR testing equipment and methodologies essential to diagnosis of Covid-19.

Gastro Practitioner Team Our Gastro Practitioner team physically moved their service to a new location a record three times over the last 12 months and managed to provide excellent patient services throughout!

Toni Peet

Adam Tingle received a Star of the Month award and an Unsung Hero award at the Doncaster Business Awards for his tremendous efforts in keeping the whole Trust and the public informed throughout the pandemic.

Toni Peet, Lung Nurse Specialist, volunteered to work within COVID-19 wards, sitting with patients at the end of life, comforting them in their final moments, offering crucial support while colleagues continued to care and treat others in need.

Acute Physiotherapy Team Our Acute Physiotherapy team, including some physio colleagues who were redeployed, changed their service to a 24 hour provision during the pandemic. Many of them working new shift patterns and in new areas, they all rose to the challenge and supported each other through it.

Respiratory and Critical Care Doncaster Chamber Awards Team DBTH received the Outstanding Contribution award at this year’s Doncaster Chamber Awards – a testimony to the incredible efforts every member of the team contributed to over the last 12 months of the pandemic.

Our Respiratory and Critical Care teams cared for our most vulnerable patients requiring complex medical interventions during their treatment for Covid-19. Being in high-risk areas these teams worked in the highest levels of PPE throughout, going above and beyond to treat covid patients whilst still providing the highest levels of care to patients with conditions unrelated to the virus.

Procurement Team Our Procurement team worked tirelessly to ensure that we had ample stocks of PPE to help keep their colleagues safe throughout the last 12 months of the pandemic.

Ken Agwuh Ken Agwuh, Director of Infection Prevention and Control at the Trust, received the ‘Caring and Compassionate’ award at the Doncaster Business Awards for his contributions in co-ordinating our organisational response to Covid.

Every single member of Team DBTH has achieved the impossible over the last 12 months. They have adapted to new ways of working, consistently gone above and beyond whilst out of their comfort zones and have ensured that we were able to care for those in need.

Celebrating our staff Our front-line colleagues, including nursing and medical staff, therapies staff and our service department colleagues have persevered through all the challenges of the last 12 months. They have changed the way they worked, worked in Personal Protective Equipment and, throughout the additional pressures that Covid forced upon them, have managed to continue to provide excellent patient services. Many of our clinical colleagues were redeployed to other services around the Trust, placing them out of their comfort zones but all rose to the challenge gracefully and exceeded all expectations.

Our colleagues working in corporate roles and support services have been equally as present and important in delivering our organisations response to the pandemic over the last 12 months. They have incorporated additional support actions for the Trust into their regular work days, quickly and effectively implemented new processes and ways of working, and ultimately supported their clinical colleagues to provide the best care for those in need.

Support from our communities Over the last 12 months, we have been blessed with such unimaginable outpourings of support from our local communities (and some even further afield) which we are extremely grateful for. We’d like to thank everyone who did their part to give our colleagues a boost, whether this was taking part in the key-worker claps, donating food and other care items, or fundraising, and even those of you who took the time to leave a supportive comment on our Facebook page.

Thank you.

Residents of HMP Hatfield raise over £1,000 with a sponsored 12-hour run, covering a total distance of 345km.

Becky Sprowell, from Carlton in Lindrick near Worksop, raised over £3,000 for Bassetlaw ITU, running a half marathon.

In December, over 60 local businesses, organisations and families, sponsored Christmas stars to light up our buildings.

Some were dedicated in memorial to lost loved-ones and some were dedicated to our colleagues for their efforts in the fight against Covid.

Yellow bus catering stationed their iconic vehicle in one of our car parks during the first wave of the pandemic in order to provide or staff with hot, nutritious meals to keep them fuelled through some tough shifts.

DFS, the UK Furniture Company, manufactured and donated 1,000 gowns to bolster our stores of Personal Protective Equipment to help keep our colleagues safe.

Amazon Doncaster donated tablets to the Trust to help facilitate video calling and virtual visiting for our patients.

Edlington Postman, Dave Evans and local resident Dean Ashbridge, raised over £500 for DBTH by swapping his usual Royal Mail uniform for various Superhero and Disney character costumes.

George and Edmund, a pair of professional violinists performed virtual concerts for some of our inpatients.

Artist Chinwe Russell rallied her colleagues and friends to donate some incredible art pieces to brighten up our corridors and improve staff morale.

Moss Properties arranged weekly donations of fruit to be distributed amongst our colleagues – a little something to keep us healthy.

Local boy, and Manchester City fan, Harrison ran the distance from his home to the Etihad stadium (a total of 69 miles) to raise over £2,000 for Bassetlaw Hospital.

Sainsbury’s Edenthorpe donated hampers to our teams on Wards 20 and 21 and our to our Endoscopy teams.

Morrisons supermarket helped to keep staff spirits and energy levels high with care packages for those working on our Intensive Care Unit.

Fourteen year old Toby put together hundreds of individual goody bags for our staff as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Local student Caitlin and her little sister Amelia decorated the railings outside our Doncaster site with colourful bows to remind our staff to look for rainbows after a storm.

Pizza Hut Doncaster certainly did their bit to keep staff fuelled throughout the first wave – they delivered us 100 pizzas which went down a treat.

Support from our communities The White Swan in Blyth cheered up our colleagues in Bassetlaw Emergency Department with homemade mother’s day meals for those who could not spend the day with their children.

The Rockin-R and the London North East Railway donated two medical gaming carts to our children’s ward. The carts are durable, easily moved and very easily cleaned – making them a Covid friendly source of entertainment for our youngest patients.

Centreparcs donated us 30 luxury hampers to be given out to our Bassetlaw Heroes.

Team DBTH nominated their Bassetlaw colleagues, who they thought deserved recognition for going above and beyond, to receive the hampers.

Network Rail were on hand to bolster our stocks of PPE during the first wave of the pandemic. They donated all manner of gowns, masks and gloves.

Albemarle Homes selected DBTH as their official charity partner and pledged £100 for every sale of their new homes in local developments. Totalling over £40,000, the generous donation will go towards improving experiences for patients and staff.

Lots of skilled sewers in our local communities turned their hands to making scrub wash bags for staff to safely launder their uniforms after a shift.

As well as the wash bags, when we appealed for handmade cloth face coverings and comfort headbands for our staff, hundreds of local sewers answered the call.

Our communities rallied around us from afar, sending supportive messages, getting involved in Clap for Carers and encouraging their neighbours to follow guidance, stay safe and protect the NHS. We have been overwhelmed by the staggering amount of support shown to us over the last 12 months and each message and gesture, big or small, brought with it a boost to help our colleagues get through some tough days. Thank you.

Deborah Ward’s daughters raised over £1,700 for the Trust’s charity selling their crafty woodwork rainbows – the rainbows are still brightening up many of our departments today.

Rainbow Gardens Appeal

12 June 2020: DBTH launches the Rainbow Garden Appeal

Anpario PLC, a local animal health, hygiene and nutrition manufacturer, kicks off our Rainbow Garden appeal with a huge donation of £10,000

July 2020: Polypipe Building Products donated £5,000 to our Rainbow Garden appeal

August 2020: Shedcetra, a Retford-based timber building provider, donates £1,500 to our Rainbow Garden appeal.

August 2020: Collectively, our Bassetlaw District Councillors raised £2,000 towards our Rainbow Garden appeal.

September 2020: MechFS, a Doncasterbased mechanical and electrical engineering firm, donates £5,000 to our Rainbow Garden appeal.

16 September 2020: An official ground-breaking ceremony marks the start of the works to create the Bassetlaw garden.

Health and Wellbeing

Supporting Team DBTH through Covid-19 and beyond At DBTH the health and wellbeing of our colleagues has always been our top priority and never more so than in the last twelve months. There is no doubt that 2020 has been the most challenging year in NHS history and we have seen our colleagues pull together to go above and beyond each and every day. It is vital that we keep our people safe, healthy and well – both physically and psychologically.

The Health and Wellbeing team are working hard to support our people and to promote our support offer across our three hospital sites.

Early on in the pandemic the team pulled together a pack signposting teams to the support available. Here are just a few of the services accessed:

set up which provides assistance on a wide range of matters including domestic abuse and financial wellbeing support.

The staff benefits scheme enables colleagues to purchase items from home electronics to cars and gym memberships through salary sacrifice.

• There are over fifty Health & Wellbeing Champions supporting the Health and Wellbeing Team sharing information and signposting colleagues to different offers.

• A Step Challenge was created to encourage our colleagues to get moving, this created much competition between departments!

• Free cycle events across our sites servicing staff the opportunity to have their bikes serviced for free. As well as promoting

the benefits of cycling to work we also promoted our on-site facilities including shower facilities and secure bike shelters on all sites.

• Free Wellbeing Phone Apps a list of free apps available for NHS staff was made available including Headspace and Sleepio.

• Health & Wellbeing Calendar was created with monthly campaigns run giving staff access to advice and information on a variety of topics including sleep, menopause and smoking and alcohol.

Our Health and Wellbeing offer is continually expanding as colleagues share with us what their needs are and what would support them to maintain their health and wellbeing.

We are always interested in new ways and ideas to support the wellbeing of our people.

• Reiki practitioner – Over 300 staff have accessed this free onsite provision • The Talk, Listen, Care service has made over 7000 calls to absent staff in regards to stress, anxiety, depression, child care problems, Covid-19 symptoms and/or Covid positive. This service is a check in service to see what if any support is needed, this could be with shopping or signposting to services available eg counselling, reiki etc.

• Rainbow rooms were created across all three sites giving staff a place to go for a well needed break and to recharge. The rooms were filled with tea and coffee and Health & wellbeing materials.

• Following an appeal to create two Rainbow Memorial Gardens one at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and one at Bassetlaw Hospital over £40,000 was raised. The first of the gardens opened in September 2020 at Bassetlaw Hospital and the garden at Doncaster Royal Infirmary will open in April 2021. A garden is already in place at Montagu Hospital and a memorial to all those we have lost to Covid-19, including our three much missed colleagues, will be placed in each of the gardens.

• Staff Physiotherapy Service is well established and supports people who experience musculoskeletal disorders which affect the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and other soft tissues and joints.

The common complaints are back, neck, shoulder and knee pain.

• Comfort packs were created for patients being discharged who had no family support available to them. The packs included toiletries, tea and coffee etc.

• Vivup, our Employee Assistance Provision provides help 24/7, 365 days a year giving our colleagues access to confidential impartial assistance, including counselling, for issues such as anxiety and depression. There is also a Listening Line and a Bereavement Support Line

Remembering our colleagues Kevin Smith

Lorraine Butterfield

On Easter Sunday in 2020, Kevin Smith, a beloved colleague at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), passed away following treatment for Covid-19.

Last November we were deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden and unexpected passing of our much-loved colleague, Lorraine Butterfield.

A Plaster Technician at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and a valued and respected member of the team since 1983, Kev, as he was known to friends, cared for thousands of patients throughout his career. So well-known and thought of was the Doncaster resident that he was often stopped and thanked whenever he was out and about by those he had so expertly patched-up, potted and plastered.

A Registered Nurse of many years’ experience, Lorraine was a familiar face within our Emergency Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and made such a huge difference to the countless patients she cared for since joining our Trust in 2004.

Colleagues who worked closely with Lorraine describe her as a hugely warm, kind and joyous person, who always had a smile for everyone she came across, as well as an ever-extended helping hand for those in need.

Following the announcement of Kevin’s passing, thousands of colleagues across DBTH came together and clapped for him for one minute. This was in addition to the countless messages left on Facebook, describing him at the town’s ‘very best pot man’ amongst other heartfelt tributes.

Channelling her efforts into such a worthwhile project, Diane Smith, Kev’s wife, has launched an appeal in her husband’s honour, to raise money for much-needed wheelchairs at the Trust.

Speaking about the fundraising campaign, Diane said: “Kev spent many years in plaster due to a congenital abnormality of his lower leg, and in 1982 took the decision to have it amputated. From a very early age he knew exactly what it was like to experience mobility problems.

“It was with this in mind that I decided to ask for donations in memory of my husband which will be put towards the cost of new wheelchairs for DBTH. Kev was always complaining he could never

find wheelchairs for patients and when he did he always said that they had a mind of their own.

To Lorraine’s family we shared our collective thoughts, condolences and sympathies and they continue to be in our thoughts today. Lorraine touched so many lives both in her native South Africa as well as within Doncaster, the town which she made her home. She is missed desperately.

“Over the years this Trust has been good to our family, so the least we can do in Kev’s memory is raise as much money as we can so patients and staff will have access to a wheelchair wherever and whenever they need one.”

The dedicated wheelchair park, called ‘Kev’s Wheels’ is situated outside the fracture clinic where Kev worked and is a fitting tribute to Kevin, one that is in-keeping with his generous spirit and his will to do the very best for his patients.

Dr Medhat Atalla

In April 2020, Dr Medhat Atalla, a much-loved and respected doctor at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, sadly passed away at the hospital following treatment for Covid-19.

Dr Atalla became a full-time member of our Trust in 2014, when he was appointed as a Consultant Geriatrician on our Gresley Unit.

We were fortunate to have worked with him for many years prior to this, since his arrival in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s, where he cared for many elderly patients in hospitals throughout the North of England.

A hugely popular and respected colleague, Dr Atalla was a very special human being who practised medicine across three continents throughout his career, affecting the lives of so many in such a positive way. He was a truly gentle gentleman and he is hugely missed by us all.

Our thoughts continue to be with Dr Atalla’s brother and sister and loved ones in Egypt.

Wyndthorpe Hall and Gardens Care Home Situated in the quaint and historic town of Dunsville, in generous private grounds sits Wyndthorpe Hall and Gardens Care Home. Comprising of two buildings, one being a grade two listed 18th century mansion which houses a dome ceiling and has been converted sympathetically.

The second being a beautiful red brick purpose-built building with an idyllic walled garden. Both providing a high standard of person centred care in a home from home setting for our clients.

✔ We offer long term residential, dementia and nursing care. ✔ We also provide day care and short term/respite stays to give home carers a well-earned break. ✔ All meals are home cooked and freshly prepared by our cooks in our 4-star rated kitchen. Daily menu choices are available, and all special diets are catered for. ✔ There is a hair salon on site which is visited regularly by a professional hairdresser. ✔ Chiropody, eye testing service and other complementary therapies are also available by arrangement. ✔ We have a full time personal activities leader who provides a varied programme of activities for our clients varying from one to one, group activities, regular outings and frequent fundraising events throughout the year.
