The countdown to the Leicester Children’s Hospital Appeal launch has begun.

After years of careful behind-the scenes planning, Leicester Hospitals Charity are delighted to announce that the appeal launches on 9 July and focusses on the first phase of the Children’s Hospital – moving the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre from the Glenfield Hospital to Kensington Building at the Royal Infirmary in line with national standards. You can find out how you can help this vital appeal lift off on pages 18 and 19.

We also celebrate the impressive amount of meaningful recognition across our nursing and midwifery team. I know there simply was not enough space to include everyone so I would like to congratulate each and every member of staff who has, and continues to, make Leicester’s Hospitals proud and deliver

Caring at its best. Read about a selection of our achievers on pages 16 and 17.

Also in this edition, we have an in depth look into the Pharmacy Homecare team, an update from our fantastic volunteers, and how staff nurse Sarah Brown goes from working on the wards to treading the boards!

DR DAMIAN ROLAND Children’s emergency department We had a date with Damian on Valentine’s Day as we spent the day with him in the children’s emergency department. It was an unusually quiet morning so the Paediatric ED staff used this as an opportunity to make sure everything was in order in preparation for the rest of the day. This also meant there was a chance for some impromptu teaching using a yellow quiz box that contains a variety of teaching materials. Damian also helped answer some questions that a junior doctor had about their patient. Damian was then in a meeting for a couple of hours before he had some well-earned lunch.

To finish off, we had the opportunity to watch Damian lead some simulation training.

A day in the life of...

DR MATTHEW GRAHAM-BROWN Renal department

In December 2018, we started our ‘A day in the life of’ series which gives staff and patients the opportunity to see what our doctors get up to on a day to day basis. Here’s who we have followed so far:

In December, we spent the day with Dr Graham-Brown in the renal department. It was interesting to learn about the variety of things he does from day to day. In the morning he was doing his ward rounds where he checks on his patients in the ward and keeps them updated, he then spent some time with the junior doctors and quizzed them on a number of things while also asking for their thoughts on the ward round. Just before lunch, we observed him insert a central line which is where a small tube is placed into a large vein in the neck. For the rest of the day, Dr Graham-Brown was in clinic where he saw a number of existing patients.

Becoming the Best...

join us on our journey

We are in many ways a great organisation. We have fantastic people, many strong clinical services and a scale which gives us stability into the future.

I have been in the organisation for six years now and every day I see and hear stories about staff going above and beyond, living our values and behaviours to deliver the best care to our patients.

But we don’t get it right every time. I also hear about frustrations with processes or lack of resources and I recognise that we are not always consistent in our approach. So what can we do to be better?

Last summer we began looking at how we can become an ‘Outstanding’ organisation (as rated by the Care Quality Commission) or, to put it another way, how we can ensure that we deliver Caring at its Best for every patient, every time.

The very best NHS organisations have some things in common: • Their leadership team have an unwavering commitment to improving quality • They have a culture of improvement, encouraged by leaders at all levels • They systematically give people the skills to do improvement • They put patients at the centre of improvement • They work actively with the wider system

We have taken this learning and developed our new Quality Strategy – Becoming the Best.

We have not needed to start from scratch. We have already made a wide range of improvements over the last few years through our Quality Commitment, for example for patients with sepsis, and have seen improved outcomes and reduced harm as a result. Our Listening into Action programme has empowered front-line teams to make changes that have improved things for patients and staff.

The new Changing Places toilet is designed for people who need additional space, equipment and time.

Changing for the better!

Patients and visitors to the Leicester Royal Infirmary will now be able to access new, fully-equipped Changing Places toilets after a brand new development was unveiled in April. Located on the ground floor of the Balmoral Building, the new Changing Places facility offer patients and carers with special accessibility requirements better convenience, safety and dignity.

Complimenting a similar facility available in the Children’s Emergency Department (pictured above), the Balmoral toilet took 18 months to complete and was partly funded through donations to Leicester Hospitals Charity.

A number of Leicester’s Hospitals staff took the initiative to raise funds to support the project – with one senior staff member even running last year’s London Marathon in aid of it.

One of the driving forces behind the new facilities, Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant Rachel Rowlands, says that the new Changing Places toilets are a welcome addition to the hospital.

“Most of us do not give visiting the hospital a second thought, but many disabled people are unable to make use of certain facilities that we may take for granted,” explains Rachel.

require more room with mobility and assistance for people who have profound physical or learning disabilities and need extra equipment and space to use toilets not only more comfortably, but also safely.

“We hope that these needs will be met by our new Changing Places toilet, which have specifically been designed for dependant use.”

Building Commissioning Manager Kishor Patel says the Royal Infirmary is one of few NHS hospitals with such facilities.

“Across the country, not many hospitals have these Changing Places toilets,” says Kishor.

“The nearest other hospital to us that does is Sheffield.

“This is because these accessible toilets are not statutory requirements for NHS hospitals. This can have a big effect on patients and carers with accessibility requirements. If they have hospital LeicesterHospitalsNHS

appointments, they may plan ahead to see where the nearest Changing Places facility is in case they need one. If there isn’t one within a reasonable distance, that can influence whether a patient will choose to attend their appointment – which should never be the case.

Access to the new Balmoral facility is granted though the use of a ‘RADAR’ key, commonly held by patients and carers with accessibility requirements.

If visitors do not have a RADAR key but require the use of the facilities, they can be opened by security on request.

Be part of research We are proud to actively support the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) campaign, 'Be Part of Research'.

It is only through research that we can develop better treatments and care, as well as improve diagnosis and prevention. However, for our research to be meaningful to the people it intends to help, we need people like you to get involved in its development to make it more relevant to your needs and priorities.

Professor Nigel Brunskill is the Director for Research and Innovation at Leicester’s Hospitals. He said: “Wherever you live, the NHS Constitution states you should be able to learn of any research taking place that is relevant to you. It is clear from evidence that taking part in research can benefit patients and carers by offering the opportunity to try new treatments that are in development and learn more about the condition affecting you or someone you care for.”

A (k)nee-t idea!

Gerry developed knee arthrofibrosis following a period of immobilisation after a fracture in the upper part of his shinbone.

Arthrofibrosis is an exaggerated response to a traumatic injury or surgery, such as total knee replacement, triggering a large amount of scar tissue and fibrous bands to form in a joint. This causes it to tighten and gives the patient a lot of pain.

In Gerry’s case, the arthrofibrosis continued to the point where he found it difficult to bend his knee. A person needs 90 degrees of knee flexion for walking, but following an operation to remove Gerry’s knee fixator, his knee flexion was just 40 degrees. This only increased to 50 degrees following intensive physiotherapy and he was warned that he may require further surgery (at a cost of £5,000 to the NHS) if further increases could not be achieved.

Not in favour of surgery, and being practically minded, Gerry worked with senior physiotherapist Sara Aspinall to design a tool that could be used daily at home to improve his knee flexion.

She said: “We initially built a new medical stretching device that we have called the

Self-Treatment Assisted Knee flexion tool (STAK tool) in Gerry’s shed!

“The results were impressive.

After using it daily for just four weeks, Gerry’s knee had 83 degrees of flexion, so he no longer needed surgery.

“After nine weeks, Gerry had 92 degrees of flexion and was back on his beloved bicycle! So we knew we were onto something special.”

Since then, Sara has been evaluating the STAK tool through clinical trials as part of her PhD with Loughborough University.

Sara continued: “Results are looking really positive, with significant differences between users of the STAK tool compared to patients who followed the current standard treatment for knee arthrofibrosis.”

In focus

The Pharmacy Homecare Team

Homecare is a service offered to patients, who remain under the care of our trust, for selected high cost therapies.

University Hospitals of Leicester has a dedicated pharmacy homecare team who work alongside your clinical teams and external providers to deliver a high quality service for the delivery of your specialist medication to your home.

The Pharmacy Homecare team is based within the pharmacy department at the General Hospital. The team provide a service to 21 different clinical teams, covering approximately 100 therapy areas; with over 4500 trust patients using the service.

This is achieved by working in close collaboration with other teams including those in pharmacy, clinical teams, and contracted independent Homecare companies.

The benefits of the service include patient convenience, enhanced patient experiences, access to new therapies, and improved clinical outcomes.

The service also allows for a cost efficient supply route for high cost therapy medicines, without compromising patient care.

The team have the pleasure of working with a very diverse group of people; clinical teams, prescribers, pharmacy staff and external providers. As a fast growing and relatively new service they have been able to influence its development over the last few years and see it take root.

The team is currently rolling out homecare workshops to all trust pharmacists involved in the professional screening of homecare prescriptions.

There future plans include gathering patient feedback from service users, in order to make any necessary service adjustments to improve patient experience. They are also exploring ways to have face to face engagement with patients to gain direct feedback and improve patients’ understanding of the service.

Pharmacy Purchasing Officer

Our senior homecare pharmacy technicians work closely with clinical teams, homecare providers and other service users to provide medicine management, service support to clinical teams and also conduct regular homecare service reviews. Their day may vary considerably, working on areas relating to homecare delivery arrangements, providing additional support to colleagues and much more.

The role of the purchasing officer covers a vast area and does more than just purchasing. The main task of the role is the handling of patients’ prescriptions between the hospital and homecare providers; a unique purchase order is added to every prescription, after delivery is made this transaction is completed to achieve full financial governance for each supply. Every invoice is checked to ensure that the trust has been charged correctly for the service provided.

About the artworks This space will feature a changing programme of exhibitions curated by students and staff at De Montfort University. The wooden commemoration plaque was made by the grandfather of a current member of staff.

Glass Installation 8 Alexander Beleschenko (b.1951) Beleschenko is a British artist who creates architectural glass installations.

He has twice been awarded the Art and Architecture Award from the Royal Society of Arts.

Celebration of Friendship (1994) 14 AJanice Hay, Coordinator, Loughborough Design and Textile Group.

Odames Library Exhibition 15 Space Located on the old Odames ward, which was once a Nightingale ward built around 1910. The library is available to all University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust staff as well as medical and nursing students studying at De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.

The current exhibition, Brief Encounters, is the result of a collaboration between artists and scientists at Leicester University.

Our first cohort of Nursing Associates received their two-year foundation degree in March 2019 (the first cohort in England).

Voyages of Discovery 1980, Jim Robison (b. 1939) Voyages of Discovery is made from clay. It has been fired to stoneware temperature (1280c) and refired (800c) to fuse the metallic bronze lustre glaze onto the small details. Voyages of Discovery is about a travel through life.

Scales and Horizons 1982, 4 Peter Randall Page RA (b.1954) This sculpture, commissioned in 1982 is made from Weldon stone. It was originally sited in the courtyard, which was part of the main entrance way of the hospital. We are currently seeking funding to bring the sculpture back to life, with help from Peter Randall Page. If you would like to be part of this exciting project, would like to hear more, or would like to make a donation to support it, please email us artsandheritage@uhl-tr.nhs.uk The Beach 1985, 5 Anthony Eyton RA (b. 1923) Royal Academician Anthony Eyton is one of the best English travel painters of the twentieth century. His extensive travels through Asia, India and Europe enabled Eyton to develop his distinctively vibrant style. His work has attracted many national awards and is shown all over the UK.

Etchings 1980, Dame Elisabeth 6 Frink RA (1930-1993) Elisabeth Frink was an English sculptor and printmaker. Her Times obituary noted the three essential themes in her work as the nature of Man; the “horseness” of horses; and the divine in human form.

As a recognition of her contributions to arts and culture, Frink was one of five women selected to be featured on British postage stamps in 1996.

White anemone in Vase 9 Presented to Geoffrey Moss, who dedicated time to developing the art collection at the LRI. Our art storage room is named after him.

Peter and the Wolf series 1987, 10 Reg Cartwright (b. 1938) Born in Leicester in 1938, Reg Cartwright is an award-winning painter and illustrator, whose work has been exhibited around the world. An archive of Reg’s work is held at Leicester University and can be viewed here: www2.le.ac.uk/library/find/ specialcollections/specialcollections/ cartwright The Anthony Eyton Corridor, Anthony Eyton RA (b. 1923) In 1985 Anthony Eyton was commissioned as resident artist at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and exhibitions were held here and at Surrey University and the Kings Fund Centre. The works on display here were produced during this residency.

Edwardian Pavilion Bus 12 Shelter c. 1907 A rare example of an early-20th century timber garden shelter, the structure provided a sheltered seating area within the grounds of the 1771 original hospital building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, is a grade II listed building.

The shelter was donated by Edward Wood, a long-serving chairman of the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Edwardian Grandfather Clock 13 The clock is made from mahogany and satinwood.

The inscription on the clock reads: Presented to the Leicester Royal Infirmary April 1942. 1873 - ‘Victor Jubilee’ - 1923.

Presented to Mr Allen Lovell by ‘The Victor’ as a token of their high esteem and acknowledgement of his faithful leadership for 50 years.

After years of careful behind-the-scenes planning, we’re delighted to share with all of you, our Leicester’s Hospitals friends and colleagues, the exciting launch of our Children’s Hospital Appeal.

You can all be proud of how our children’s services care for our youngest patients from across our region – despite the East Midlands being the only region in England without a dedicated children’s hospital.

We believe it’s high time we put an end to that inequality. So, our vision is simple.

Sarah Brown began her nursing career as a Health Care Assistant (HCA) at Leicester’s Hospitals in 1999, before training to be a nurse and qualifying in 2004.

Inside What is your role inside the Trust?

I am currently a staff nurse on the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) at Royal Infirmary. We experience a really high turnover of patients on SAU and my role is entirely “hands on”. I admit patients to the ward, give out medication and prepare people for theatre.

What do you enjoy most about working for Leicester’s Hospitals?

A couple of years ago I introduced my ward to some music therapists, which I was really proud of.

I also really enjoy giving really good quality end of life care to patients, which we sadly have many opportunities to do.

What do you enjoy most about performing?

I enjoy singing for the release it gives me from work stresses!

I treasure the close friendships I have made with the people I perform with. I love the fact that we get to realise our vision for the show, support each other and have fun along the way.

Out

What is your role outside of the Trust?

Outside of my role here, I have been singing and acting for fun since I was a child. I joined Wigston Amateur Operatic Society (WAOS) in 1996 and The Singers Club this year. Recently I have also taken on the added challenge of running WAOS’s Twitter account, which I am really enjoying!

My latest production is Legally Blonde the Musical. I am in the ensemble, which involves playing various small roles in the show including one of Elle Woods’ selfie mad sorority sisters and a ‘Skipping Inmate’ of the Boston Women’s Correctional Facility!

Do you see any parallels between your work at Leicester’s Hospitals and performing in musicals?

Some parallels between my two roles are; they both rely on good communication skills - both verbal and non-verbal, good organisation and team work is vital, as is THE working/ TICKATRE THEATRE ET performing T ICAKDMEITTONE under pressure.

Volunteering update!

We have around 800 volunteers who give their time and skills and do some amazing things to help our patients have a better experience in hospital. We are focusing on three areas of UHL volunteering, which are very different, yet give volunteers a rewarding experience and make a huge difference to our hospitals and patients.

If you can give 3-4 hours of your time each week and would like to become part of our volunteering team, we would love to hear from you.

Survey Volunteering Giving patients the chance to ‘have their say’ is an important role for volunteers.

The Survey Volunteer role was developed for volunteers to support the Trust in gathering information on the experience of patients using our services.

The role involves talking to patients, supporting the Trust’s patient survey and other activities aimed at gathering patient feedback.

Survey volunteers have a specific interest in surveying and are supported

by Patient Experience. Surveys are collected using an electronic device and volunteers are asked to survey on wards on all three sites. This role mainly involves talking and listening to patients by visiting lots of different wards.

This role is important as often the patients whose views and experiences need to be understood are those who find it hardest to give feedback.

Volunteers will be asked to support older people, those who

have English as second or other language, those with learning disabilities or any who do not find completing surveys easy.

Surveying is often a role that volunteers ‘add on‘ to their main activity and either assist with surveys when requested or for part of their session.

Survey volunteers, would report to the Volunteer Services Office as for other volunteer roles.

Leicester Hospital’s Charity Shops We have two, amazing, bright orange portakabin charity shops Both of our shops sell a selection of pre-loved, second-chance items, including, women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories and bags.

Household, bric-a-brac, books, toys and jigsaws puzzles. Our shops are filled with interesting, eclectic items that need a new home.

Our Glenfield Hospital Charity shop Opens Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm Situated in the staff car park.

Our General Hospital Charity shop Open Tuesday & Thursday 10am to 4pm Situated in car park number 2.

On Wednesday 10am to 4pm, the shop will have a new team for you to meet: The Pears Project, funded by the Pears Foundation, gives those aged 16-21 the opportunity to volunteer for 12 weeks at one of our hospital sites.

Unfortunately for many of these patients, an amputation is all that can be done. How we support people in the last weeks and days of life We recognise that every death, every patient and every family is different, so getting to know what is important to them is essential.

This helps us to create an end of life care plan which is specific to each patient and family and reflects their values and goals.

Dr Julia Grant, consultant in palliative medicine at Leicester’s Hospitals said: “For most people, dying is something which happens as part of a chronic illness, such as heart failure or dementia. How we die is profoundly personal, however, the goal of care for people who are dying focuses on helping them to live well until the end of their life. This may include relieving suffering; helping people stay as well as they can; and helping them achieve goals that are important to them before they die.

“This care is often provided by a mix of professionals, including those skilled in palliative care. These professionals will want to ensure that everyone affected by a terminal condition (including families and carers) knows about the choices they have and what support is available to them at this difficult time.

“We recognise the importance of a home death for some patients and do what we can to help this to happen, working alongside our colleagues in Leicestershire Partnership Trust on making sure that when it is important, we can get patients home quickly and seamlessly.

“We also know that a hospital is somewhere patients and families often feel safe and we want their experience to be as respectable as possible. One of the ways in which we ensure dying patients receive the care they need in the last days and hours of life is, with their consent, using a Butterfly symbol. This alerts staff who might not know the patient that this is a family that might need a bit more support or time” “We also have a fantastic team of VALE Volunteers who are able to spend time with patients in their last days of life where family are struggling to reach them or need someone to be with their relative while they rest.

“We have recognised the importance of continuing to improve and review the care we provide in the last stages of life at Leicester’s Hospitals have agreed our first UHL End of Life Care Strategy for Adult Patients. Alongside this, we are developing a way to collect information which helps us to understand where we can make more improvements.”

Alongside the care given by healthcare professionals is our Chaplaincy, a diverse team that offers pastoral, spiritual and religious support to patients, carers, families and staff whatever their faith, tradition or outlook. The team includes Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and Sikh chaplains and a non-religious pastoral carer. They are also supported by volunteers from various faiths and beliefs.

When someone close to you is dying, it can be a frightening and bewildering time.

At Leicester’s Hospitals we want you to feel you can ask for help and want you to be involved in the care of the person you love as much as you feel you want to.

Each year we take part in Dying Matters Awareness Week which aims to help people talk more openly about dying, death and bereavement, and to make plans for the end of life. See our social media for more!

Focussing on What Matters Most!

Jane Higgot works as a Medicines Management Technician in Cancer and Haematology. Jane recently made a very positive impact on a patient called Helen.

Jane explains: “I would see Helen every 3 weeks whilst she was coming into the chemotherapy suite to collect her oral chemotherapy tablets.

I would give out her medicines and check if she was managing them OK. “Helen’s a very determined, positive, strong lady and we’d always have a chat together. Over the weeks of her attending the chemotherapy clinic, we chatted more and more. I would always make sure I was around to give out her medication and check she was OK. “Helen let me know that she was coming to the end of her chemotherapy treatment and mentioned she would love to ring the end of treatment bell. So we arranged a convenient time after her treatment finished. Helen rang the bell and I presented her with some flowers. Everyone was so pleased – Helen and her husband were both beaming. Being a part of this was amazing.

“My role might not always be thought of as patient facing but it really is. Ensuring patients are OK is such a focus of my day.”

Calling All Staff!

In April Zoe and Wesley, from Acute Cardiology at Glenfield, talked all things Nursing to year 7 students at Iveshead College in Loughborough.

They gave them information on how to get into Nursing – what skills/qualifications are required and an insight into development and the huge variety of opportunities through Nursing. The pupils were really engaged and loved seeing some of the cardiology props that were examples of what our patients might have whilst staying on our ward!
