In this issue of Together Magazine there are so many examples of how staff, teams and our patients are helping us to become the best and putting our patients at the heart of what we do.

On page 6 we share the story of former patient Ben, aged 8, and his innovative fundraising to buy toys and games for other children in our children’s hospital. Thank you Ben, you are a super star.

Our amazing Rainbow Clinic opened in June.

This support service is for parents who have had a stillbirth, late miscarriage or early neonatal death in a previous pregnancy. The clinic aims to improve the emotional and psychological wellbeing of families as well as reduce the need for extra hospital admissions. Full story on page 5.

In partnership with Dementia UK, we now have a new Admiral Nursing service who work alongside people with dementia, their families, carers and members of the multi professional team read more and meet the team on page 14.

Leicester Hospitals charity launched their children’s hospital appeal over the summer.

This appeal aims to help revolutionise how we deliver our children’s services and create a state-of-the-art children’s hospital that will do our children proud. Read the story on page 16 and find out how you can #DoThemProud.

Throughout the magazine you will read about a variety of staff, volunteers and teams delivering fantastic care day in, day out both in patient environments and behind the scenes.

As we continue on our becoming the best journey I would like to say that great care doesn’t go unnoticed – when we get it right we make patients and their families experiences the best they can be in some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Rainbow Clinic

Supporting parents in pregnancy after a previous loss In June 2019 we launched our very own Rainbow Antenatal Clinic at the Royal to support parents who have had a stillbirth, late miscarriage or early neonatal death in a previous pregnancy. Care via a dedicated Rainbow Clinic has been shown to improve the emotional and psychological wellbeing of families as well as reduce the need for extra hospital admissions.

The clinic, which is led by a small group of Consultants and Specialist Midwives, now provides specialist antenatal care and continuity of support during their later pregnancies.

Jo Dickens, Specialist Midwife said: “From the families we have had the privilege of caring for over the years, it is notable that being supported by a small team who know their story and understand the range of emotions and concerns that their new pregnancy presents, can make a huge difference to the woman and her partner’s wellbeing.”

Trishna Parekh, mum to angel baby Anushka and who is currently 7 months

pregnant with her rainbow baby, said: “After the loss of our beautiful daughter I was completely devastated and found it difficult to even think about future pregnancies. The journey was daunting and knew it would be difficult.

“But the regular scans and specialist support I have received from the rainbow clinic have given me reassurance to enjoy this pregnancy without as much anxiety and fear of what might and could happen again.”

Dr Penny McParland, Consultant Obstetrician who also leads the Royal Infirmary clinic, said:

“The team were thrilled to welcome the first ‘rainbow baby’, Taya who was born on the 20 June 2019. Mum, Emily Smith, had previously been cared for by members of the team when her son Theo was born prematurely and sadly died 11 hours after his birth in 2017.”

Taya is Emily, and her partner Tom’s third child, and older brother Thomas, aged 2, has been very excited to meet his new little sister and bring her home.

Emily and Tom said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Penny and Jo for all the support they gave to us during our last pregnancy, we really are very grateful.”

Ben’s ‘bin’ on a toy delivery mission

Ben Clark, aged 8, from Peckleton in Leicestershire has been raising money for children’s wards at Leicester’s Hospitals. After Ben’s own experience of staying in Leicester Royal Infirmary during the winter 2018, due to asthma, he wanted to do something as he felt there were limited toys for children to play with. So he came up with an idea to raise money to help fund toys and activities for children in hospitals, children’s homes and local hospices. Whilst also doing his bit for the environment.

The idea came to Ben when he was away with his family – his mum Debbie, dad Oliver and brother Archie.

The family were touring the country supporting Ben and Archie’s go-kart racing passion. Ben decided to start collecting discarded microfibre cloths from the racing teams and with a little guidance from Debbie he began sprucing them up to sell back to teams.

Ben explains: “I really like being able to help other children and make them happy. I love to take the toys into the hospital and hand them over.”

Anna said: “When I heard about what Ben had been doing I could not wait to meet him and say thank you. It’s absolutely incredible that Ben had this idea and made it happen. He’s improved the experience for children and their families whilst they are in hospital.”

Ben recently got a taste of his own medicine when Leicester City Football Club sent Filbert Fox to his school assembly to present Ben with a new LCFC football kit and invited him to be their official mascot in the opening game of the season.

Clinical Coding

The Clinical Coding team are the people who summarise the clinical treatment of our patients.

Coders read case notes after a patient leaves the hospital and translate diagnoses, treatments, procedures and interventions into a coded form. We can then compare ourselves against other organisations nationally in different ways, for example the complexity of patients or their mortality risk. Clinical coding also informs the invoicing process to charge commissioners for the patients we have treated.

The coders rely entirely on the ready availability of clinical information that has been recorded.

If you see case notes with an Orange Dot on the front, these are notes the coders have not seen yet. Employees in our hospitals forward them onto the

coding team and are then responsible for the capture of complete data.

It takes at least 18 months to train a brand new coder. They complete their formal training; all work is then checked for several months, after, they are released into the wider organisation under a designated experienced mentor.

Every March, we hold our Clinical Coding Conference when the whole team comes together. Clinicians from across our hospitals provide insight into their own specialties, enabling the Coders to understand more of the ‘why’ and ‘how’ patients are treated in certain ways.

Meet Our Coding Team

Into the deapp From ‘boring medical facts’ to fun and innovative education package Imagine you are ten years old.

For the last few weeks you have been feeling really tired, hungry, need to go to the loo all the time and you find it hard to concentrate at school. You go into hospital and are told you have type 1 diabetes. Then a nurse, dietician or doctor spends an hour telling you how to live your life to make sure you don’t get ill.

You go away muddled; there was so much to take in.

You’re still not sure if it’s your fault you are poorly.

A few weeks later, you’re back in hospital for a ‘re-education’ programme after your blood sugars become dangerously high or low.

“That was not an uncommon scenario until recently,” explains Sarah Lockwood-Lee, deapp project co-ordinator. “We were frustrated. Families were frustrated.

So we made a conscious decision to do something about it.”

A team of clinicians, together with product designers and specialists in education and linguistics at De Montfort University, have developed a fun new type 1 diabetes curriculum called ‘deapp’ (pronounced ‘deep’), with an eye-catching ocean theme that teems with colourful sea creatures.

Sarah continued: “Children who have had a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes can download an app onto their own

mobile device and watch a series of age- and language-appropriate animated videos. We have structured lesson plans to match the videos so we can select educational resources, such as board games and puppets, to check a child’s understanding of what they have viewed. From a nurse’s point of view, this is much more enjoyable than just speaking at the patient.”

“We have used the concept of ‘flipped learning’ to underpin our new programme,” said Dr James Greening, a consultant endocrinologist in the children’s hospital. “This is where the patient first learns the theory through the videos and then is tested by the healthcare professional through games and activities to identify any gaps in

their knowledge. Only then can we sign off patients as safe to go home.

“Parents, carers and teachers can also access the videos to help them support the child through the diagnosis and management of their condition.”

The feedback from patients and their families has been very positive so far.

One parent said: “The app takes you through it step by step so you can absorb the information in bite size chunks. I found it hard to concentrate on the first day due to the stress of how ill my son was and through lack of sleep. The following day it was easier to absorb the information.”

“It’s really important to get the education about what it means to have type 1 diabetes right the first time,” added Dr Greening. “Children with type 1 diabetes who have poor sugar control find their behaviour and learning is hugely affected. There are also long term risks of complications, such as kidney problems, poor eyesight, compromised heart health and damage to the nervous system.

“The deapp education programme is helping to empower children and families to get good control of their type 1 diabetes early on, so children can continue to have fulfilling and active social, school and family lives.”

New Admiral Nursing service A new Admiral Nursing service has been established here at Leicester’s Hospitals in partnership with Dementia UK, in support of their belief that people who need the support of a specialist dementia nurse should have access to one.

When things get challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work alongside people with dementia, their families, carers and members of the multi professional team to provide one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions, that can be hard to find elsewhere.

The Admiral Nurse service launched at the beginning of June 2019 on the Frailty Units at Leicester Royal Infirmary and now with two nurses in post the plan is to extend the service to the Older People’s wards.

It is a Monday to Friday service 08.30-16.30

Nursing Associates graduate In January 2017, we launched one of the first pilot trainee Nursing Associate Programmes across the East Midlands.

Our first cohort of Nursing Associates graduated from De Monfort University in July after completing a two year Foundation Degree delivered at the Leicestershire School of Nursing Associates at Glenfield Hospital in partnership with the University.

The Nursing Associates are based at sites across Leicestershire including Leicester’s Hospitals, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, GP Practices and LOROS. Eleanor Meldrum, Deputy Chief Nurse at Leicester’s Hospitals and Project Lead for the Nursing Associate project for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “I’d like to congratulate all of our Nursing Associates on this momentous occasion. They have worked hard over 14

the past couple of years and have pioneered a new role that will support and complement the care given by registered nurses. They are caring and competent professionals with the right knowledge and skills and have become valued members of our workforce and we are very proud of them.

Meet Amir and Lewis Amir Khatri and Lewis Holyoake work as Medicines Administration Pharmacy Technicians (MAPT).

They carry out drug rounds, rotating between the Hampton Suite and Ward 38 at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

This is a new post which started in May 2018.

They obtain, administer and reconcile medication (mainly oral) and help with To Take Out (TTO) medication.

Importantly, they have freed up time so nurses can carry out other tasks such as insulin administration, assisting patients with personal care and pressure area care and much more.

Overall they have improved TTO turnaround time, reduced the number of missed critical medications and are respected members of the team.

Amir said:

“I feel it has helped the nursing and pharmacy team function better as one team.”

Lewis said:

“We provide extra support to allow for excellent patient care.

I have a huge level of job satisfaction.”

Going live with

In June 2019, the first national forum was held at Glenfield Hospital to share experiences with other trusts. The plan now is to expand the role so they administer subcutaneous medication.

Creating a digital, paperless hospital with the eHospital programme

The eMeds project is almost complete and it has delivered electronic prescribing and medicines administration across all 3 sites to the majority of inpatient clinical areas.

Benefits of eMeds: Ramandeep Kaur, Project Manager said “The team have worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months supporting staff to ensure the rollout has been successful. This has included teaching how to use eMeds and ensuring patients receive medications on time during the introductory period. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the planning and implementation of eMeds across all 3 sites and to all ward staff at UHL in particular our nursing, medical and pharmacy colleagues for embracing the new system and way of working with enthusiasm”.

Celebrating our Heritage As a charity, we love and value the great history and heritage of our hospitals.

We proudly support our Arts & Heritage programmes and so we’re delighted to give the Arts & Heritage Programme Development Officer, Sallie Varnam, a chance to let you know a little bit more about what’s happening with this important side of our hospitals.

Our hospitals’ Arts and Heritage programme has been delivering a wealth of fantastic projects over the last few months.

Through our partnerships with De Montfort University (DMU) and the University of Leicester (UoL), we’ve delivered two art exhibitions in the Leicester Royal Infirmary Gallery, located on the first floor of the Balmoral Building.

We’ve worked with social enterprise Crafting Relationships to deliver a series of Local History Cafés for older people at risk of social isolation at Glenfield Hospital. We heard many fascinating talks about local history – from local legend and RAF navigator Rudy Hicks to the history of Welford Road Cemetery – while enabling people to socialise and eat lots of delicious cakes.

Our exhibition ‘The Art of Healthcare’, a display of the Trust’s museum and art

collection, was held at De Montfort University’s Heritage Centre. We’ve secured a National Lottery Heritage grant through the ‘Y Heritage’ programme to enable a museum professional, working alongside a young person, to delve into our museum collection, sort and catalogue the many and varied objects in it and curate a series of portable display cases that will be used to tell the Trust’s story in wards and public spaces.

Our Arts Council England grant has enabled us to bring professional artists into the wards. Working with the Meaningful Activities team, we’ve delivered creative writing and South Indian dance workshops with our older patients. We’re planning visual arts and comedy workshops in the Autumn too.

We’ve also been able, through funds allocated from both the Health and Wellbeing programme, and our partners at DMU, a series of artist led workshops to support staff wellbeing. This February, staff will be able to perform a show as part of the Leicester Comedy Festival!

We’ll be delivering an October Arts Festival with events at all three sites. Look out for details and get involved, we’d love to see you.

The Arts and Heritage post is funded through Leicester Hospitals Charity and we work with our partners to maximize these funds to secure grants that enable us to deliver our projects.

ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING

Thank you to everyone who attended our Annual Public Meeting on 4th July. We were really pleased to see so many members of the public at this year’s event and we have received lots of positive feedback. We would also like to thank our stall holders for giving up their time to represent their services and making this a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.

One of the highlights this year was the opportunity to take part in Indian dance exercise sessions, courtesy of the hospital’s Arts and Heritage Programme. This proved a popular attraction with our public members.

We hope you had the opportunity to pose any questions you wished to raise during the formal meeting led by the cross-organisational panel from local NHS services.

Saying thank you to dedicated volunteers!

This year we celebrated Volunteers Week by showing our volunteers how much they are appreciated. We presented our Annual Report to Trust Board and to the PIPEAC Group - spreading the word about all of our volunteers and what they do.

The Report which features lots of facts about the amazing things our volunteers do and many pictures of them in action is available to download on our volunteering webpage and copies are in our Offices on each site.

We also held celebration events to thank our volunteers properly for everything that they have done throughout the year, and continue to do, that make a real difference to our patients.

An event was held at each site and volunteers were able to enjoy a tempting selection of drinks and cakes provided

by LEat catering at Leicester’s Hospitals.

We held them in the afternoon and kept them informal so that volunteers had the opportunity to meet other volunteers and share their stories. It was also really

rewarding for staff to be able to chat with volunteers in a relaxing environment and have the opportunity to enjoy their company.

Two of the events were attended by our Chairman Karamjit Singh who is a great supporter of all of our volunteers and the services and activities they are involved in. The Chairman spent time speaking to each volunteer thanking them personally on behalf of the Trust. The event at Leicester General Hospital was attended

by Lisa Davies our new Director of Leicester Hospitals Charity who was introduced to our volunteers and what they do for the first time. Thank you to both of you for your support at these events.

As always we gave each volunteer a small gift as a token of our appreciation and a free raffle ticket for a range of lovely prizes donated by local businesses and individuals.

This was the first year that we have tried the events in this format rather than one big ‘offsite’ event and it seemed that they were a great success. We will however be evaluating them to see what the volunteers would prefer for their future annual celebrations.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers - you make such a difference to so many people.

Indirect calorimetry measuring metabolism

Why is this useful?

User opinion:

What is it?

Indirect calorimetry is used to calculate how much energy a person uses. This is done by measuring oxygen taken in versus the carbon dioxide released.

It can also tell us if the person is using more carbohydrates, fats or protein as fuel.

“It takes a moment to acclimatise to as wearing the hood is like being underwater: sounds are muffled. It gets a bit warm after a longer time, but overall was surprisingly relaxing!” - Terry

How do we use the indirect calorimeter?

Measurements taken from the indirect calorimeter can be used in exercise, nutrition and metabolism research.

We measure the resting energy of people who have not eaten for 12 hours. First they rest for 15 minutes, then the hood is put over their shoulders for 30 minutes. This is used to calculate how many calories the person requires for 24 hours at rest.

Who uses it?

Our research technicians including Dr Nicole Coull (pictured) always operate the indirect calorimeter. It is used for many different studies within our Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

Study examples SEESAW: This trial studied how SGLT-2 inhibitors and calorierestriction affected weight, appetite, physical activity and energy use – using the indirect calorimeter. SGLT-2 inhibitors are used to treat type 2 diabetes as they lower blood sugar.

Carol Fitzpatrick joined our hospital in 2015. As a student nurse she banked as a Health Care Assistant and used this as an opportunity to try different areas. Carol is now Deputy Sister on the Acute Frailty Unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Inside What is your role inside the Trust?

I am Deputy Sister on the Acute Frailty Unit; my job involves overseeing the care of up to eight patients. If I’m coordinating the ward, I shadow the consultant and update any plans for the patients. I have taken on the task of student link so I manage the student nurses that come to placement on this ward. Also as part of my role I escalate any staffing issues with the matrons.

What do you enjoy most about working for Leicester’s Hospitals?

It’s a great place to work.

As a place Leicester is very multi-cultural, lots of people with different backgrounds, cultures and experiences.

What do you enjoy most about Gaelic football?

Back in Ireland, I was brought up playing Gaelic football. It is a traditional Irish sport that has spread around the world. When I was living in San Francisco in 2011 - I joined the local Gaelic football team.

I have met some of my most cherished friends through this amazing sport.

I find no matter how far away from Ireland I am - playing this sport gives me that sense of home.

Do you see any links between your work at Leicester’s Hospitals and Gaelic football?

Gaelic football is all about team work as is UHL. Every single person on the pitch make a difference to get a score and to win the game. In UHL Doctors,

What is your role outside of the Trust?

I moved to Leicester from Ireland in 2013 to study nursing.

As I didn’t know anyone in this country I joined the university rugby team, a local rugby team in Coalville and also the local Gaelic football team to meet people.

Nurses, Pharmacists, Healthcare Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Housekeepers and Domestics all work with the patient to ensure good quality care and safe discharge takes place.

I have actually met some people that work at the hospitals through this sport and I would not have met them in work.

What are your proudest achievements at work and outside of work?

Last year we won the All Britain final in Gaelic football and the European championship. Very proud to say I was captain of the De Montfort rugby team during my nursing studies. I also was a successful tug of war champion representing Ireland in the UK championships. My proudest achievement at work is winning the Caring at Its Best ‘We focus on what matters most’ award in 2018. Completing my nursing degree was my biggest achievement. I also have a degree in accounting and finance and a diploma in business studies.

A UNIQUE SATURDAY MORNING RUN, CUPPA AND CATCH UP People living with and beyond cancer in the Leicester area are being encouraged to get active as part of an initiative called ‘5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer.’

The Leicester ‘5K Your Way’ group invites those living with and beyond cancer, their families and friends and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at the park run held in Victoria Park on the last Saturday of each month Members then socialise over a drink and cake in the local café. In short it is an active coffee morning combining fresh air, movement and socialising.

Jane Sherwood, who founded the Leicester 5k Your Way, sadly passed away in May. Jane recognised that exercise for people living with and beyond cancer improves both physical and mental health. Jane also had a vision that health care professionals treating patients affected by cancer would attend at least once and therefore experience the benefits of exercise themselves and be able to encourage other patients to come.

Jane’s husband, Chris Sherwood (pictured above), said: “Whilst undergoing chemotherapy Jane looked around for support groups that would help keep her active and keep her strength up. She was inspired by what she saw was happening in Nottingham and was determined to bring 5k Your Way to Leicester.

“Jane was adamant that ‘5k Your Way’ offered something for everyone affected by cancer, do as much or as little exercise as you like but do come, get some fresh air, support each other and go home feeling that little bit better about life.

Dr Joey Wood, Consultant in Oncology at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “We want to keep the legacy going that Jane has started. Jane was so passionate and set this up to give people the chance to be active during and post treatment in a relaxed, supportive and fun way.

“I regularly take part and it is such an uplifting way to start the weekend.

It’s not about how fast or far you go, it’s simply about socialising and taking part.”

Staff on ward 17 at the Royal held raffles and cake sales to raise funds for a new room that aims to help terminally ill patients and their loved ones feel more comfortable in the final moments of their life.

The room features a television, radio, reading materials and a bed where a loved one can sleep for the night.

Karen Morely named ‘Apprentice of the year’ Last September, Karen successfully achieved her apprenticeship to qualify as an assistant practitioner having previously been a HCA. She was then nominated for the “Outstanding Individual Learner” award by her course tutor and later won the ‘Apprentice of the year’ award.

The team from the delivery suite at the General Hospital have created a ‘positivity board’ to help inspire and reflect on their achievements, even if it is only something small, it’s still an achievement.

On Wednesday 26 June, we asked our reserves to come to work in their reserve uniforms to celebrate Reserves Day so we could show our support for the armed forces and we are extremely proud to have a number of reserves working at our hospitals.

The 222 Medical Squadron also visited the Royal Infirmary to show patients and staff alike just what it means to be in the reserves. The squadron are part of The Army Medical Service (AMS) who can deploy at short notice anywhere in the world to provide medical support. The AMS are there to maintain soldiers' health and provide medical care to the sick and injured.
