State-of-the-art equipment donated by Take Heart The Take Heart charity has kindly donated £165,000 worth of state-of-theart cardiac equipment that will greatly improve the experience of heart patients in Leeds.

The equipment includes two new 3D portable ultrasound machines and an imaging machine that uses laser technology to obtain high resolution images of coronary arteries. It is one of only a few in the country and is vital in the treatment of patients who have disease of the main coronary artery.

The Take Heart Charity and its Chairman, Colin Pullan, are longstanding supporters of the Yorkshire Heart Centre. The total amount raised by the charity so far is set to reach £3 million later this year.

Gina McGawley, Head of Clinical Physiology, said: “We are extremely grateful to Colin and the Take Heart charity for this generous donation. This equipment will make a big difference to patients across the city.

“The portable ultrasound machines can be used anytime, day or night, for patients who cannot have their heart scan done in the main cardiac ultrasound department. This could be because the patient is too sick to leave the ward.

“The new technology means that we can get detailed 3D information about heart function, valve disease and other pathologies which we cannot get with basic portable machines. It means our patients have access to the best possible care as soon as they need it”, added Gina.

One machine is for use in the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, which has cardiac patients on the Intensive Care Unit, Critical Care Unit and cardiac wards. This machine is also used in A&E and the catheter labs for emergency scans and during new interventions such as the replacement of the aortic valve

Prestigious £250k arthritis research award for Leeds The Trust and its partners have been awarded £250,000 by Arthritis Research UK to create an Experimental Osteoarthritis Research Centre (EOTC) - one of only two in this country.

The Leeds EOTC brings together three national leaders in musculoskeletal research: the Division of Musculoskeletal Disease (MSKD), the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU) and the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE).

It recognises the national and international expertise of Trust and University experts in leading osteoarthritis research and the strong multi-disciplinary links we now have across rheumatology, bioengineering, clinical biomechanics and radiology.

Within this unique clinical research environment is a team of highly experienced researchers with the capability to achieve significant impact on individuals, health services and the wider economy, through development of essential knowledge and technologies.

The vision of establishing the Leeds-based Arthritis Research UK EOTC is based on the city’s track record in developing relevant biomechanical outcomes and improved patient phenotypes. It is envisaged the centre will become the premier place for patient phenotyping for interventional studies.

The role of abnormal biomechanics and targeted interventions that manipulate mechanical function represent an important strategy for reducing clinical symptoms and slowing or preventing the progression of osteoarthritis.

Royal tonic as Sophie sees for herself what Leeds Children’s Hospital has to offer In a joyful day of celebration Sophie, Countess of Wessex, officially opened the Leeds Children’s Hospital and gave it the Royal seal of approval.

Her Royal Highness visited a cystic fibrosis ward and a children’s cancer ward and chatted to children, parents and staff.

The Countess also toured the hospital’s impressive paediatric learning zone, taking time to join in some of the lessons underway for children of different ages, who were undertaking a series of fun but educational activities including chemistry experiments and baking.

She admired dramatic murals which have transformed the entrance to the Clarendon Wing and continue the theme along the corridors to help with wayfinding and make young people feel more comfortable about coming to hospital.

Steel band music gave the event a carnival flavour, and the different charities who make such a difference to the quality of care in the hospital came together to put on displays showcasing their work and the difference they make.

The Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal, Candlelighters, the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Sick Children’s Trust were among those represented.

The Countess delighted children and parents by chatting and posing for photographs, before making a glowing speech commending the environment and standards of care.

“Can I just say what an absolute privilege it has been today to come and visit the hospital,” she said. “I can see the wonderful facilities you now have for these very special children.”

She added young patients and their parents were clearly impressed by what had been achieved and by the dedication of staff.

The Countess spontaneously asked children in the audience to come and join her to help unveil a special plaque to commemorate the event. One of those who helped was 10-yearold Hannah Whittaker, who is waiting for a kidney transplant.

Another very special guest on the day was long-standing patient and high-profile friend of the Leeds Children’s Hospital, Bel Young, aged 12, who was chosen to hand the Countess a bouquet and said afterwards how honoured she had felt.

She also met one of Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal’s most modest but dedicated fundraisers, Leslie Hayes. Leslie is a familiar sight to many staff and visitors as stands nearly even day in the entrance to the Jubilee Wing with his collection bucket and has already raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Appeal.

In his speech welcoming the Countess, Trust Vice Chairman, Mark Abrahams, told the audience:

“It is to the great credit of all concerned that we stand here today celebrating our success in centralising children’s inpatient services at the Leeds General Infirmary, not only bringing the widest range of services together, but embedding them close to related adult services, so that we can offer an integrated service from birth into adulthood. This itself is genuinely a triumph of hope over adversity.

“However, our vision for the future is clear; we want to be renowned as a centre of excellence. The next few years will be about finishing what we have started and achieving our ultimate goal to bring all children’s inpatient services, including critical care and operating theatres, together in Clarendon Wing.

Mr Abrahams also paid tribute to clinicians and managers who had helped make the £30 million project a reality.

International award for Professor Emery Professor Paul Emery, Consultant Rheumatologist and Director of the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, has won the international Carol Nachman Award for outstanding rheumatology research.

Sponsored by the German city of Wiesbaden, the prize is used to promote clinical and experimental research in the different fields of rheumatology. It was last awarded to someone in the UK over 12 years ago.

Professor Emery has previously received the Roche Biennial Award of Clinical Rheumatology, the Rheumatology Hospital Doctor of the Year award 1999, and EULAR prize 2002 for outstanding contribution to Rheumatology research.

Professor Emery’s research interests centre around rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue diseases. He has a special interest in the factors leading to persistent inflammation and is a founder member of ERAS, LEAP (Leeds Early Arthritis Project) and YEAR (Yorkshire Early Arthritis Register) and the Leeds Musculoskeletal Imaging Group. He has published over 750 peer reviewed articles in this area.

Bexley artwork is loving donation in memory of Valerie The family and friends of the late Valerie Raine have donated three large landscape images to Bexley Wing in appreciation of the care and affection Valerie received from staff during her battle against cancer.

The pictures are located at the far end of the atrium opposite the café, and are already attracting a lot of attention and favourable comments from patients, visitors and staff.

They were officially unveiled by Valerie’s widower, David Raine, his children and grandchildren, during a short ceremony.

The first image of the crag and its surrounding countryside in summer was chosen due to the abundant heather in the foreground which Valerie always liked.

After a long fight with ovarian cancer and 13 cycles of chemotherapy, Valerie sadly died last year at the age of 66. Family and friends collected money in her memory and decided they would like to use it to donate artwork to

add to the interior of the hospital.

The images are by Joe Cornish and were chosen because Valerie had seen prints by the photographer in Chancellor’s Wing when she was receiving treatment there and had always thought they really enhanced the environment.

They are of the landscape around Roseberry Topping on the North York Moors, photographed in three different seasons. The first image of the crag and its surrounding countryside in summer was chosen due to the abundant heather in the foreground which Valerie always liked.

Valerie’s family then thought it would be nice to have the same view but in different seasons for the other two images, including a dramatic one covered in snow.

Speaking at the unveiling, David Raine gave special thanks to consultant oncologist Geoff Hall for all he and his colleagues did to help Valerie. He also spoke movingly of the extra years that chemotherapy treatment had given her, allowing her to be there for the birth of her grandchildren Hope and Harry, now aged three and two respectively.

International first as Bexley pioneers beam-shaping treatment St James’s has carried out the first patient procedure anywhere in the world using a revolutionary new beam-shaping device designed to provide more precise radiotherapy treatment.

The Agility device has been developed

by Elekta, a specialist in the field of cancer and neurosurgery equipment.

Elekta has been working closely with the St James’s Institute of Oncology to introduce this technology, which is set to improve the quality of care for thousands of cancer patients across Europe.

As well as improving the way radiotherapy is targeted to increase its likely effectiveness, further benefits include increased speed of treatment and potentially less harmful side-effects.

Dr Vivian Cosgrove, Head of Radiotherapy Physics at St James’s, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this landmark of introducing the first Agility

into clinical use. The device will allow us to deliver highly complex radiotherapy quicker and more accurately than current technology.

This will help to improve the patient experience of radiotherapy and should also lead to superior outcomes.

Our goal is to make this treatment technique and cutting-edge technology available to more of our patients.

“The Agility enhances the way we can target radiotherapy treatment beams to match the precise shape of a cancer.

Combined with the latest therapy technique, VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy),

where a therapy beam is continuously reshaped as it rotates about the patient, we can significantly raise the standard and quality of radiotherapy delivery.

“Leeds is already at the national forefront in the provision of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung cancer.

The Agility will help us bring further improvements to this already effective treatment technique. Our goal is to make this treatment technique and cutting-edge technology available to more of our patients.

“It is a testament to the staff and facilities available in St James’s that a large, global company such as Elekta has chosen us as its partner to develop this new technology.

The support of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal and the people of Leeds and Yorkshire is gratefully acknowledged.”

Sad death of fundraiser Harry after TV accolade Trust, said: “Harry was such a great character and his death is a huge loss to the hospital.

He’ll be particularly missed by all the staff in Beckett Wing where he was an institution.

“Harry was a very modest man who never sought out fame and worked so hard to raise money for a cause he was absolutely committed to. He was also very proud to have been on the recent TV programme.”

In The Secret Millionaire, internationally renowned theatre producer David King, originally from Alwoodley, was filmed spending time with Harry at the hospital without revealing his true identity. The producers came up with a smokescreen story so that no-one guessed the real reason behind what was going on.

Harry proudly displays the MBE he received in 2007.

Staff across of the Trust were saddened to hear of the death of one of our most long-standing fundraisers, Harry Clements MBE, who was best known for his stall in the Beckett Wing at St James’s.

In a remarkably dedicated fundraising career spanning more than two decades, 70-year-old Harry raised more than £100,000 to support the cardiac wards at the Trust, and he was a

legend at St James’s in particular.

Harry, who had been ill recently, died after being rushed from his home to LGI just days after a triumphant appearance on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire programme in which a businessman from Leeds returned to the city to share some of his fortune with people he felt were making a real difference in their community.

This left Harry speechless when the true reason for the filming was broken to him on camera.

“They kept it secret right up until the last day,” he said. “Then they told me what it was all about, I just filled up. I was over the moon,” he said after hearing the news.

Characteristically, Harry put the cheque from Mr King to good use, buying more coronary care equipment for the Trust.

Logical approach to radical ward renumbering After months of detailed planning, ward numbers across the Trust changed to a more patient and visitor friendly system over the last weekend in March.

The planners and estates and facilities teams worked tirelessly to avoid any disruption to services, working through the weekend to get the changes made quickly. Every member of staff received a credit card sized converter table summarising the changes.

All the wards have been renumbered so that there is a logical sequence for people to follow within each wing and from where patients and visitors enter the main sites.

Way finding kiosks have also been introduced - initially in Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary, and Gledhow Wing at St James’s. These can help anyone coming onto the sites by providing on-screen information and print-off directions to any part of the site.

“Fantastic” new renal satellite unit opened in Huddersfield The Trust runs kidney dialysis units for patients across West Yorkshire, and has just officially opened its most modern facility, a new £1.5m unit at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The building, with its distinctive funnelshaped roof, is in a prime location next to the main hospital site, and was the former doctors’ mess before conversion.

It welcomed its first patients last year, after the facility was relocated from its old home at the former St Luke’s Hospital site.

As part of its role as a regional centre, Leeds Teaching Hospitals provides specialist renal services to patients across the county from its central hub at St James’. It runs a number of satellite dialysis units, with the new Huddersfield unit looking after the needs of kidney patients from the Kirklees area.

The modern, purpose-designed facility for patients has up to 14 treatment areas, and is bright and welcoming with a much-improved

environment compared to the previous location. Being based on the Royal Infirmary site means patients can have outpatient clinics there and also have the reassurance of backup from other acute hospital services close by.

Currently 42 patients use the unit, undergoing dialysis three times a week, but it has the capacity to dialyse up to 56. The Trust has worked closely with the British Kidney Patient Association, who kindly funded some extras including television sets and privacy curtains.

Trust Chief Executive Maggie Boyle chatted to patients using the new facility before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the official opening. In her speech she acknowledged that renal patients spend a long time on dialysis and how disruptive this can be to everyday life, particularly when travel times across West Yorkshire are

“Providing comfortable and modern facilities as close to people’s homes as possible is a key part of our renal dialysis strategy, and this new unit at Huddersfield offers state-ofthe-art facilities with room to expand in the future”, she said.

Consultant nephrologist Dr Liz Garthwaite spoke about the fantastic environment in the new facility and paid tribute to the staff on site and everyone who has worked so hard to make the project a reality.

The Chairman and Chief Executive of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, also attended the ceremony in recognition of the partnership working with Leeds.

Sweet treats in memory of Sir Jimmy Youngsters at the Leeds Children’s Hospital received an “eggstra” special surprise when a clutch of delicious Easter eggs arrived on the wards, courtesy of the late Sir Jimmy Savile’s family.

Staff at the Queen’s Hotel donated the eggs in memory of Sir Jimmy and his nieces asked them to be given to the children in hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary. They were handed out by nurses on the wards.

Sir Jimmy was one of the most longstanding supporters of the Trust, raising millions of pounds for patients in Leeds.

Rugby stars back Radiotherapy Two stars from the Leeds Rhinos, Jay Pitts and Liam Hood, visited Bexley Wing to show off some of their silverware and to promote the partnership between the Trust and Leeds Rugby.

Both organisations have pledged to work together for a healthier Leeds with initiatives to benefit sports fans, LTHT staff, patients, hospital charities and the public.

In one of the first projects, the Leeds Rhinos are donating funds from selected ticket sales to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre

appeal, for projects in the radiotherapy department at the St James’s Institute of Oncology.

Oncology manager at St James’s, Foluke Ajayi. said that as well as giving a fundraising boost the visit highlighted the Trust’s focus on health promotion and in particular early cancer diagnosis: “We hope this initiative will publicise the public health campaign to raise awareness of the advantages in seeking early medical advice, but also to encourage a healthy, sporty lifestyle for cancer prevention,” she said.

Raising awareness of bowel cancer The Colorectal and Stomacare nurses ran a 3 day workshop at St James’s to raise awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer – the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.

Lynda Castle, Colorectal nurse specialist said: “Bowel cancer is very treatable, particularly when it is diagnosed early. The problem is that awareness is too low. It is really important for us to get out and speak to people so they know to get checked out early.”

Neonatal unit accommodation gets makeover in memory of two special tots Families of newborn babies being cared for on the LGI Neonatal Unit now have totally transformed accommodation thanks to a generous Changing Rooms-style makeover.

It was the brainchild of Emma Robinson and Zoe Lowe, who became friends while their desperately-sick newborn babies were being looked after at the hospital, and whose lives were both touched by tragedy.

Sadly, Emma’s son Jasper died at the age of five months, while Zoe had twin girls, Evie and Mollie. Evie died aged just 16 days but Mollie defied the odds and is now a healthy six-month-old baby.

The pair decided to give the unit’s parental accommodation a radical makeover to say thank you to staff for all they did for Jasper,

Evie and Mollie, and to give future parents a better environment.

With their partners, families and friends they set about raising £3,000 to fund the transformation, and managed to get furniture giant Ikea to donate some items to help with the redecoration of what were two very basic rooms.

Both are now unrecognisable thanks to the fantastic efforts of the fundraisers.

One has been transformed into a cool blue environment in memory of Jasper, and the other is a warm pink space in memory of Evie.

“The rooms have been made into tranquil spaces where parents are able to gather their thoughts to help them cope with the stress and anxiety that go hand in hand with having a newborn baby who needs intensive care.

“The medical and nursing staff and our parents cannot thank them enough for their generosity and vision that has made this project so successful.”

Same-day gamma knife treatment of rare condition is a first The Leeds Gamma Knife Centre in the Bexley Wing has for the first time been used to treat a rare genetic condition, von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease.

When VHL triggered the growth of tumours in his brain during the 1990s, Jason Richards had to have open-skull surgery, needed a lifesupport machine as part of his recovery, and spent up to six months off work.

Congratulations to Julie Well done to Julie Andrew, Clinical nurse specialist for endocrinology, who won the national Annette Louise Seal Memorial Award for her work to improve the care of steroiddependant patients.

The company director from Horsforth feared a repeat of this experience – which he confesses “almost killed” him – after a recent scan detected a worrying new growth.

But this time he was in and out of St James’s the very same day – after his tumour was treated in just 60 minutes using the region’s latest hi-tech tool in the fight against brain disease, a gamma knife.

Clinicians at the hospital used 192 beams of gamma radiation to target the tumour with pinpoint accuracy, avoiding the need for complex open surgery and the risks that this can bring. It was the first time that gamma knife technology has been used by Leeds neurosurgeons to treat a patient with this disorder.

Just 72 hours after being discharged, Jason was back behind the handlebars of his motorcycle trike.

He commented: “To have a brain tumour, and now be treated as a day patient, is a remarkable advance – a world apart from open surgery - and offers new hope to people like me.”

The Gamma Knife Centre is run by Nova Healthcare in partnership with the Trust.

This prize of £500 is awarded by the Addison’s Disease Self Help Group to a nurse whose submission best advances the clinical management of adrenal insufficiency.

Julie won the award for the changes she has implemented following the results of an audit undertaken in the out-patients area during an Endocrine Clinic. It followed up on a previous audit performed by Dr Sophie Thomas.

She has introduced a credit card-sized steroid card with patient and healthcare information, worked with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to implement a patient letter to direct attending Paramedics to administer emergency IM hydrocortisone, and had agreement from both the Trust and surrounding A&E departments to place alerts on susceptible patient’s notes.

Julie said: “Winning the award is a great honour. We plan to re-audit our area in 12 months, and hopefully should be able to quantify the improvements in our service.”

Julie presented her work entitled ‘Adequacy of documented evidence of education in glucocorticoiddeficient patients and subsequent nurse-led initiatives’ at the Society for Endocrinology annual conference in Harrogate in March. The poster also received a ‘Highly Commended award’ from the Society for Endocrinology.

New patient-friendly website launched The Trust has launched a new user-friendly website to help patients and the public find the information they need about our hospitals before during and after their stay.

The design is based on what people told us they most want to know. This includes information on the whereabouts of wards and departments, facilities at each location, parking and public transport, as well as details about clinical services and clear, downloadable maps.

Each of our hospitals now have their own individual landing page and also a unique symbol to identify them by. The symbols will be used within the Trust’s physical estate too as signage is replaced over time. All the major wings have also been given a different colour as part of the new design.

Some of the Trust’s most popular services, such as the Leeds Cancer Centre, Yorkshire Heart Centre and Leeds Centre for Older People’s Medicine have also been given a greater individual identity.

Together these improvements will make it easier for those who are partially sighted to find their way round their local hospitals more easily and safely.

More than 50,000 have people have visited the site in the two months since it was launched, generating an average of 275,000 page views.

Our top five requested page content over this period includes contact details, LGI and St James’s landing pages, the ward finder, search facility, and A-Z of our services.

The site is still a work in progress with more of our services and departments developing their own patient-focused content.

Murals take hospital children on magical mystery tour The Leeds Children’s Hospital underwent a major facelift in the run up to its official opening by the Countess of Wessex at the end of March.

Corridors that were previously bare now depict a fantastical journey through the wing, starting with huge murals of sea creatures in an undersea world.

These are backed up with some real-life aquatic creatures in two new fish tanks close to the Clarendon Wing reception area.

As youngsters progress through the corridors and floors of the building they come across

an array of bright and wonderful animals on land, into the air and finally up into space.

The murals were designed to capture the attention and imagination of the children attending the hospital and help detract them from what can be a sometimes stressful hospital visit.

The exterior signage to the Wing has also been revamped, highlighting the wellknown Leeds Children’s Hospital kite and incorporating the new ‘green’ Wing colour.

Stacey Hunter, Divisional General Manager for the Leeds Children’s Hospital said: “Anyone who hasn’t been for a while will find the Clarendon Wing entrance completely transformed and it really does have the wowfactor. We’ve had so many compliments from parents and children who love the new look.

“One of the challenges of making a Children’s Hospital in our existing buildings at the LGI has been how to make the environment child-friendly. This is a huge step forward and introduces themes we hope to extend to more wards and departments in the future.”

The murals have been paid for out of a charitable trust fund held by Children’s Services.

Proud moment at Wharfedale as new scanner is unveiled A brand new body density scanner has been officially unveiled at Wharfedale Hospital by the widow of the consultant endocrinologist who established the service more than 20 years ago.

Mrs Wendy Waters cut a ribbon to celebrate the arrival of the new machine and dedicated a plaque in the room where it is situated paying tribute to her late husband. Dr Kevin Waters was a much loved consultant at the hospital who died last year.

The machine is used by hospital staff to diagnose osteoporosis, and around 80 patients of both sexes are seen each week at the hospital.

The purchase has been made possible by the Wharfedale Special Medical Equipment Fund, which provided the £30,000 to purchase the scanner as a replacement for a previous machine that was ten years old. The new densitometer is much quicker and more comfortable for patients.

Louise Cartwright, Team leader in Radiology at Wharfedale Hospital, said: “This is an extremely generous donation which will secure the future of our wellused service here in the hospital for many years to come. We are so grateful to the fund for their continued support of our services, as they bought our first ever machine back in 1990.

“The main benefit to patients of the new scanner compared to our previous machine is the significantly faster scan times, being

reduced from up to six minutes for a spine scan to as little as 30 seconds. The equipment is also capable of determining body composition.”

up this service.

“It is therefore particularly fitting to dedicate the new facility to his memory in gratitude for all he did for the hospital and for local patients, and we are delighted Mrs Waters was able to join representatives of the Wharfedale Special Medical Equipment Fund for this double celebration.”

East meets west as midwives visit Six senior midwives from Hong Kong visited the Leeds Maternity Service last month as part of a maternal care programme being run by the Trust in partnership with the University of Leeds.

The aim of the Complex Maternal Care Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme is to offer a detailed insight into the care of women who have an existing or acquired complex health status during pregnancy, childbirth and the early postpartum period.

The midwives undertook five study days with the university and 15 observational clinical days in practice. Obstetricians, midwives and anaesthetists have been involved in providing taught and simulated learning events.

Chapel hosts Syrian Easter worship For many years the Chapel at St James’s has been a place of worship for small Christian communities without access to a building of their own. Initially it was used by the Yorkshire Coptic Church but more recently services have been held by the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church.

Top European journalists visit the Trust A group of influential European journalists stopped off at the Trust during a whistle-stop tour of Yorkshire to see the best of what the county has to offer. They had a tour of radiotherapy in the Bexley Wing and heard about some of the leading-edge research the Trust is involved in.

The visit was organised by Medilink in conjunction with Marketing Leeds and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI).

Those taking part represented a range of medical and technical journals from France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Norway and Poland.

Fairway to fundraising success The Richard Maltby Golf Challenge is heading towards its tenth successful year with another charity golfing bonanza planned for June. Richard and his golfing buddies have raised an impressive £78,000 for Trust charities since the events first began.

It was his own experience of cancer that led Richard to start the tournaments. He underwent major surgery to remove his large bowel and 60% of his liver in 2002, following a diagnosis of bowel and secondary liver cancer. He went on to receive six months of chemotherapy. Two years later, he underwent a second liver operation to remove a new growth in his remaining liver.

It was whilst receiving chemotherapy that year that he started the fundraising events, and has continued them ever since.

The funds have been donated to the ‘Rays of Hope’ and ‘Dainton Oncology Wing’ charities, both of which support research into the treatment of patients with bowel and liver cancer at LTHT. Around 10 junior surgeons have completed PhDs and Doctorates during this time. Their work, which includes a possible vaccination for colorectal cancer, has been presented both in the UK and internationally.

The money raised has also enabled the department to undertake various research projects including clinical trials of Omega3 fish oil supplements for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases and laboratory work demonstrating that some viruses can be used as a vaccine for liver cancer.

Thankfully Richard has remained clear of the disease.

Text messages and improved process help tackle non-attendance High patient DNA (Did Not Attend) rates are one of the bugbears of many services across the Trust, causing inefficiencies and slowing down our ability to see patients promptly and effectively.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy Outpatients at LGI, St James’s, Wharfedale and Chapel Allerton have been looking at ways of tackling this head on in an attempt to reduce the number of DNAs as well as CNDs (those cancelled on the day or within 48 hours), which are also a significant problem in ensuring the smooth running of the department, as they are often unable to fill these appointments slots at such short notice.

“In addition we are now texting patients two days before their appointment reminding them of their appointment date, time and also the number to call if they are unable to attend.

“Firstly we have introduced a more stringent partial booking system. All patients referred to MSK physiotherapy service are registered

“We have also introduced a more strictly enforced DNA policy which is explained on our opt-in letter and again by the physiotherapist at the patient’s initial appointment.

“This is an automated service arranged through informatics for those patients

attending specified clinics on PAS. The statistics we have been auditing show that this has had a significant impact on the late cancellation of follow up appointments.”

An audit of the results so far has seen the department’s combined CND and DNA rate fall from 17.4% (8.8%/8.6% respectively) in 2010-2011 to 12.7% (5.3%/7.4% respectively) in 2011-2012.

This decrease in non attendance from one financial year has led to a significant reduction of physiotherapy ‘down time’.

The department have also been attempting to identify trends in the CND/ DNAs. A common theme reported back is the difficulties expressed by patients in being able to make contact with the department to cancel appointments in a timely manner. This is the area they plan to look at next.

Accolade for Haamla team The Trust’s Haamla midwifery team has been awarded joint second prize in the Team of the Year category at the national British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards - one of the most prestigious events for midwives and allied health professionals working in the field of maternity care.

Haamla is a unique service that was established in 2010 to provide a specialist maternity service for pregnant and vulnerable black and minority ethnic women (BME), including asylum seekers and refugees, destitute women and women who have experienced female genital mutilation.

The team consisting of midwives, maternity support workers and volunteer doulas, support the women throughout the pregnancy and postnatal period.

Sarah Bennett, Specialist Midwife for BME women, said: “The women we care for often have difficulty accessing care due to barriers including language, finance, social isolation, lack of their normal social support networks, unfamiliarity with the system, fear of disclosure, insecurity and transient accommodation.

“Our service aims to overcome these barriers, putting women at the centre of care, and ensuring that women from groups who are marginalised are empowered to have access to the care they need and so taking steps towards ‘closing the gaps’ around health inequalities

relating to infant mortality and positive birth outcomes.”

The awards ceremony was held in London, alongside the BJM’s two-day national conference on intrapartum care. The host and presenter for the evening was actress, Susan Earl, famous for her role as Sue in the revived BBC comedy series, Reggie Perrin.

Julie Scarfe, Head of Midwifery, said: “I am very proud of the Haamla team. These awards attract a very high standard of entries so they have done extremely well to be recognised in this way.”

Scooters speed up recovery Youngsters on the renal, liver and gastro ward at Leeds Children’s Hospital have a fun new way to exercise thanks to a donation of micro-scooters.

Store helps CHSF cash in Marks and Spencer’s Harrogate made the LGI-based Children’s Heart Surgery Fund their charity of the year 2011/12 with a target of £6000 to be raised from activities including bingo nights, bag packing, and raffles.

The store actually raised an impressive £11,173 which will go towards buying a baby probe for the scanning department in the cardiology unit at the hospital.

Sharon Cheng, Director of the CHSF, said: “We are extremely grateful and very surprised. This is a huge achievement during such difficult economic times.”

Anna Gibson and Philippa Goharty, founders of Micro Scooters UK, have kindly given six of the machines to the hospital to help inspire children recovering from illness and surgery to recover as part of a wider programme of physiotherapy.

They have delighted staff on the ward and already are proving a big hit with young patients, greatly helping their mobility and bringing some extra fun into the ward.

Lisa Beaumont, play specialist on the ward, said: “The scooters will enable children to go to different departments in the hospital for procedures and X-rays, to make it more fun and enjoyable. We’ll also use them to motivate children after transplantation.”

National recognition for pioneering genetics project The Yorkshire Regional Genetics Service has been recognised once again for its pioneering work at the national UK Advancing Healthcare Awards 2012, just one year after scooping a prestigious Leeds NHS Award for its Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Project.

The Leeds NGS project was announced runner-up for the Chief Scientific Officer’s Award for Leadership. Helen Lindsay and Nick Camm accepted the certificate from the BBC’s medical correspondent, Fergus Walsh.

The project concerns developing and applying new DNA-sequencing technology to bring significant improvements and expansion of diagnostic genetic tests, with benefits to patients from Yorkshire, and increasingly from around the UK and abroad.

Leeds has pioneered NGS testing in the UK. This came about because of a unique initiative - the Translational Genomics Laboratory jointly funded by the University of Leeds and

the Trust and led by Prof Graham Taylor.

The team worked up initial protocols and developed ‘DNA barcodes’ to identify patient samples and reduce costs, and developed an informatics pipeline to translate raw data into patient results.

Head of Molecular Genetics Developments & Translational Facility at LTHT, Graham Taylor, said: “Following on from this success, the Trust and the University have jointly invested in additional NGS capacity with a view to bringing further benefits to the healthcare and research environment.”

Diagnostic services for inherited breast cancer were subsequently launched in March 2010.

This award-winning service is still the largest NGS service provided, but over the past 18 months further services have been developed,

so that NGS now represents over 60% of the workload. The new services have brought tangible benefits to patients including faster turnaround times.”

Scientific Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Dr Ruth Charlton, added: “I am thrilled that the skills and teamwork in the department have been recognised nationally – I am also determined that we develop services further so that we can offer patients the best and most cost-effective services.”

“Genetics is on the cusp of a revolution, and the advent of whole genome testing is on the horizon. Newer technologies are in development and the cost of DNA sequencing is currently falling fast – NGS is now bringing our patients the early benefits.”

Centre helps“Sistas” take positive approach to hair loss The team at The Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre (ROMC) have been working hard to widen the choice of wigs and information available for patients from BME communities who are affected by cancer.

Tom Mansell, Macmillan Information Project Officer, led a consultation with the Black Health Initiative “Sista to Sista” patient support group that focused on hair loss in African/African Caribbean and dual heritage people.

Tom said: “We took the current wig selection to a focus group in the community and discussed how the service was run and the limitations to wig provision. The feedback we received was that we needed to do more and widen the choice for these patients.

“We took a range of wigs from a different company, Daxbourne International, for the group to try on and they were surprised by the quality and choice, and approved their use.”

The group also felt that a hair loss advice leaflet with advice specific to patients from BME groups would be helpful, and a photo catalogue with a wider range of models from different ethnic backgrounds.

Tom and the team invited patients, including members of the “Sista to Sista” group, to model for the catalogue. The photo shoot was enjoyed by everyone including cancer patient and model, Janet Freckleton: “The photo shoot was great I had so much fun, and so

Tom said: “The National Cancer Action Team recently highlighted the availability of culturally appropriate wigs and cosmetic advice as an issue sensitive to BME communities. I am really proud of our patients and the group for being such fantastic models. I hope the positive work can be shared nationally and that other trusts can follow our lead.”

The consultation led by Tom, followed on from discussions held at the Macmillan Health and Well-being clinics where Marie Nebard, Macmillan Hair Loss Support Worker, worked with Creatyve Hair Salon on the best wig solutions for this patient group.

The project was also supported by LTHT Assistant Purchasing Manager, Lisa Bentley, ROMC manager, Sadie Smith and Hair Loss Support Worker, Julie Carrick.

Day of action on sustainability Staff at LTHT joined colleagues in healthcare organisations across the UK on NHS Sustainability Day to raise awareness about the NHS carbon footprint and how we can play a part in helping to reduce it.

The Climate Change Act 2008 sets a legal requirement of emission reductions of 80% by 2050 with a target reduction of 34% by 2020. The NHS, like others, will be held to account regarding compliance, not only by government, but increasingly also by staff and patients.

Stalls were held in Gledhow Wing at St James’s providing information on saving energy, recycling waste, travel to work information from Metro, and health and well-being initiatives.

Staff were encouraged to display the 10 Point Plan in their work areas and sign up to be Environmental Champions.

The event highlighted how staff can improve practices to be more sustainable whilst at work and at home. Future awareness days on sustainability issues are planned.

Surgical programme improves patient experience and cuts length of stay by half The length of stay for some patients undergoing major colon surgery has been reduced by almost a half as a result of an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) Programme now in place at the St James’s Colorectal Unit.

The programme was started by lead clinician for colorectal surgery, Ian Botterill, in November 2011, as part of the Managing for Success Care Pathways work-stream. Learning from an original programme set up in Denmark, Mr Botterill set up a multi-disciplinary team at SJUH, to change the way in which patients undergoing bowel surgery were managed throughout their care.

Previously, those undergoing major colon surgery could have expected to stay in hospital for between seven to ten days, depending on their condition. Since the introduction of the Enhanced Recovery Programme nationally however, the amount of time spent in hospital has been reduced to an average of just four or five days.

To achieve these results, the team, assisted by lead nurse, Ann Marjoram, looked at every step of a patient’s care pathway and followed a 17-point plan before, during and after surgery. In addition to receiving better information about what to expect, patients have been encouraged to play an active role in their own recovery which is key to the ERAS Programme. This includes taking much-needed, high energy drinks before and after surgery, mobilising sooner after surgery and writing a daily diary to chart progress along the way.

Although still at an early stage, the Enhanced Recovery Programme has already made significant improvements to the whole experience for patients, as well as reducing the length of stay.

As one patient said, “I was impressed by the Recovery Programme which told me what

was to happen and the goals I had to achieve.

I felt very much involved and the whole experience was virtually pain free.”

Commenting on the success of the programme, Ian Botterill said, “Patients are genuinely amazed when I tell them they may only need to be in hospital for four to five days, as opposed to almost two weeks before the programme was introduced. We couldn’t have achieved this without the input of the whole team, particularly our surgical outpatients, nurse specialist and pre-operative assessment teams, who have worked really hard to make this happen.”

Fond farewell We would like to wish everyone who retired from the Trust over the last few months, a happy and fun-filled retirement. Some of those include:

Staff nurse, Carol Graham, who retired after 40 years service.

Jane Close retired from her post as a Senior specialist diabetes dietitian after 25 years. Comments from some of her colleagues included: “ the most professional person I have met” and “an inspiration who fires me up to do more.”

Carmel Leighton is hanging up her scrubs after 35 years as a nurse in theatres. She has been present for hundred of births and passed on her skills to many junior staff.

Jenny Walker, Children’s endocrine nurse specialist has also recently retired. She is pictured with Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Brian Scott.

60 seconds Anaesthetic Registrar, Pierre Laloë, has worked at the Trust since August 2009. Originally from France, he went to medical school in Scotland and transferred to the West Yorkshire deanery to be closer to his partner.

Q.

What does your typical day at work involve?

As a trainee anaesthetist I get to work in various departments in separate training blocks. The main three areas you’ll find us anaesthetists are theatres, intensive care units and chronic pain sessions. There are many other areas where you’ll find an anaesthetist such as vascular radiology, labour ward, MRI, acute pain rounds and pre-assessment clinics. Last time I checked, there were about 200 anaesthetists in the Trust (across the city) including nearly 80 trainees like me.

Q.

How did you get to be an anaesthetist at LTHT?

Having spent a couple of years in London as a child, and therefore being bilingual, I applied for a place in medical school in the United Kingdom. Ever since training in Scotland, I have been working in the NHS and transferred into the West Yorkshire deanery to follow my civil partner.

Q.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I enjoy the instantly visible pharmacology and physiology. Also, the physics of the monitors and machines is extremely appealing!

Q.

And there must be something about your work that really frustrates you…

Delays in patient care.

What’s your best advice to a new starter at the Trust?

Spend a bit of time on the hospital intranet.

It’s full of useful information including antibiotic guidelines, theatre lists, test and tubes information, IV drug monographs, and the brand new AVA telephone directory.

What do you do to wind down and relax after a hard day at work?

I listen to music on a proper hi-fi, read and practice my latest card tricks.

If you could go anywhere this weekend, where would you go?

Depending on the touring calendar, I would go to a Phish concert in the US of A, or back home in “le départment du Morbihan” which is in Brittany, France.

Q.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

My first aspiration, around the age of six, was to become a binman: I was fascinated by the guys riding on the platform at the back of their huge trucks! By age ten, I loved the idea of places that are open 24/7 so decided I was going to work in an airport or a hospital.

What is your favourite film?

The Fifth Element, and not just because it’s French science-fiction. Gary Oldman and Lee Evans are great in it.
