Our amazing staff Each month, staff from across our Trust are recognised for the part they play in giving our patients the best possible experience when they come to our hospitals.

Colleagues, patients, carers, and visitors nominate someone who they think deserves to be recognised for the excellent care and service they provide and the difference it has made.

Teams can be nominated for Team of the Month, while volunteers are recognised in the Volunteer of the Month.

Each employee of the month will be considered for the Employee of the Year Award.

The award is open to all staff including those working behind the scenes - either in support functions or non-clinical roles - or to those who work in the front line.

On 19 June we saw one of our busiest days with more than 330 people visiting our Emergency Department. I would like to thank you all for your professionalism in ensuring our patients received the highest standards of care.

It’s now one year on from the launch of 1000 Voices, which set about creating a number of projects to improve patient flow across our hospitals.

We’ve seen some fantastic improvements as a result of projects such as frailty at the front door, ambulance waiting times and triage, and Home First, with more people getting home to their loved ones much sooner.

Karen Curley retires Staff from the emergency department and across the Trust recently bid an emotional farewell to general manager of ED, Karen Curley, who retired after more than 36 years in the NHS. Karen began her career training to be a nurse at Broadgreen Hospital.

She returned to the Trust 22 years ago and has managed the emergency department since 2012.

The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit won the BBC Radio Merseyside Patients’ Choice Award last year

Make a Difference Awards 2017 Shortlists for this year’s Make a Difference Awards have been announced.

The glamorous evening takes place at the Liverpool AAC on Friday 22 September and celebrate staff’s contributions over the last year.

Voice of the X-Factor Peter Dickson and BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips will host the evening.

Executive director of workforce Debbie Herring We would like to welcome Debbie Herring as the newly appointed executive director of workforce for the Trust. Debbie will be joining us on 31 July from her previous role as director of strategy and development at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Over the last 13 years, Debbie has held a number of senior roles within the NHS including director of strategy, human resources and organisational development at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, director of human resources and organisational development at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and director of human resources and organisational development at Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

She has over 25 years’ experience as a senior manager within the public sector working within Local Government and the Civil Service.

Debbie is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) and is the Vice Chair of NHS Employer’s Policy Board and Chair of NHS Providers HR Directors Network.

Professor Toh becomes vice president of British Society of Haematology Adding to an impressive list of honours, the Royal’s professor and clinical director of haematology ChengHock Toh has recently been elected as the vice president for the British Society of Haematology.

Cheng-Hock has been a member of the British Society of Haematology for 25 years and after a vote in January, he was elected as the vice president. He took up the post at the end of March, following the Society’s recent Annual Scientific Meeting, and next year he will become the president.

He will now bring his diverse experiences and broad strategic vision to ensure that the practice of haematology is at the very heart of medicine.

Cheng-Hock said: “Haematology is relevant to almost every discipline and specialty. It is

therefore a great honour to be chosen by my peers to lead them as our society’s vice president this year and president next year.

“I am extremely humbled to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading and championing the practice of British haematology. Including our own innovative work at the Roald Dahl Centre, there are many examples across the country of how new ways of practising haematology can transform patient care.

at the Royal, in addition to looking after patients and researching disorders that affect blood circulation, professor Toh has made a real difference by establishing the Roald Dahl Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre which specialises in blood flow and clotting.

Prior to working at the Royal his training included time at Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic and Queen’s University, Canada as Ontario Heart & Stroke Research Fellow.

“In this year and next, I will be strengthening the voice of haematology at national and international levels. Also, build on areas where the Society has a reputation of excellence: guidelines and education.”

Previously, he has been honoured by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis as president of its Scientific Meeting in 2012 and also by the European Haematology Association as chair of its Curriculum Committee.

As a professor of haematology, Cheng-Hock has a distinguished career as a clinician, researcher, educator and clinical leader. While

More recently, he won the NHS North West Clinical Leaders Award for leading an outstanding clinical team.

Thousands to benefit from St Paul’s Brazilian gift Thousands of patients in one of Brazil’s poorest areas are set to benefit from a sight-saving gift from St Paul’s Eye Hospital.

The specialist eye hospital, based at the Royal, has donated a dis-used retina screening camera to the Federal University of Ceara Hospital in Fortaleza to check diabetic patients for signs of retinopathy.

In Brazil, diabetes is the number one cause of blindness.

The much-needed donation will be the only retina-screening camera in the area and is set screen more than 20,000 patients.

Due to advancements in technology, St Paul’s has been able to upgrade the state-of-the-art equipment it uses for patients who visit the Liverpool-based eye hospital from across the country.

Brazilian-born clinical lead for the Liverpool Diabetic Eye Screening Programme Dr Ticiana Criddle took the screening camera to her home country just hours after it had been decommissioned in a St Paul’s clinic.

Dr Ticiana Criddle, who began her training in Fortaleza, said: “At St Paul’s, we have six cameras for around 17,000 patients. Forzaleza now has one camera for 22,000 patients. This camera is going to make a big difference to the people of Brazil.

“There are no systematic diabetic eye screening programmes in Brazil, so many eye conditions are not spotted until it’s too late. Unfortunately, several patients have such advanced disease they go straight to eye surgery while others can’t be treated and permanently lose their vision.”

While in the North-Eastern state of Ceara, Tici visited a charity-ran nursery where she was able to check 40 young children for a range of eye problems.

The retina screening camera help 22,000 patients

Ticiana added: “All of the children I saw had hard beginnings. Four children have now had their eye problems spotted early and have been sent for further treatment. Unfortunately, they are in the minority in Brazil, and many

children will lose vision for the lack of basic eye checks.

Ticiana now hopes that her visit is a positive step towards preventing blindness in Fortaleza: “This could also be the start of a research partnership between St Paul’s and the Federal University of Ceara, with a collaboration helping to fund future blindness prevention work and allowing St Paul’s to share its clinical expertise.”

Local NHS sign the Armed Forces Covenant Ahead of Armed forces day on Saturday 24 June, we teamed up with Aintree University Hospital and Liverpool Clinical Laboratories to sign the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) at the Royal.

The covenant recognises those individuals who have performed military duty uniting the country and demonstrates their valuable contribution. By signing the covenant, organisations will pledge support to those who have military service in a move towards becoming a military friendly employer.

Thank you Thursday

To witness the signing of the AFC, representatives from the armed forces community including the army, navy and air force attended alongside veterans and reservists currently working in the NHS.

On 9 March we launched Thank You Thursday, a chance for us to share with our staff all the wonderful messages of thanks we get from patients, colleagues and families.

Each Thursday we collect messages from social media, hand-written letters as well as video messages and send out a Thank You Thursday email that’s sure to brighten your day. Plus we want our staff to realise how valued and truly appreciated they are.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, said: “We currently employ both veterans and reservist doctors and nurses throughout the Trust in a number of different specialities. We also provide honorary contracts and work placement opportunities to military personnel, and in order to support their personal development and help their transition to civilian life when they are planning to leave the services.”

Since Thank You Thursday has started we’ve had a whole range of messages, from patients who want to support the hospital and are now doing fantastic fundraising. Margie Shields who had a double mastectomy said she can’t thank the hospital enough for saving her life and giving her the gift of seeing her daughter live hers. She has been raising funds for R Charity ever since.

Royal staff act fast in national cyber attack On 12 May, NHS IT systems across the country were hit by an unprecedented largescale cyber-attack.

How to spot a suspicious email

More than 300,000 computers were infected in organisations across 150 countries around the world.

• Subject line – These usually contain “special offers” or a “call to action”

While our Trust wasn’t directly affected by the virus, our staff had to work extremely hard to protect our IT systems.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, said: “It made me extremely proud to read countless accounts on social media of teams across our hospitals going the extra mile to make sure our patients and their families’ care always came first.

“I would especially like to thank our IT team for working tirelessly during this period to ensure our clinical systems could be delivered effectively. I know some of you cancelled weekend plans and came to work at extremely short notice to protect our systems and, ultimately, our patients.

“I would also like to thank all staff for your professionalism, tireless dedication to our patients, and for pulling together to ensure our hospitals remained safe at all times. I want you know that it made a difference. Thank you to all those staff who also got in touch over the weekend, with offers of help.”

• Sender – Look carefully at the senders name – does it sound legitimate or is it trying to impersonate something or someone you are familiar with?

• Logo – The logo may be low quality as the attacker may have cut and pasted from a legitimate website.

•G eneric greetings – Be wary of emails that use generic greetings such as Dear Customer, Dear you or even using the first part of your email address.

• Grammar – Check for spelling mistakes or bad grammar, although attackers have improved this significantly in recent years.

• Link/attachments – The link can sometimes look genuine even if it is not.

You can hover over a link to check what the true link actually is.

Stay safe online • Report spam emails to IT •N ever click on a link in a suspicious e-mail using your work PC or your personal device •N ever click on attachments from an unknown or unexpected source – even if that source seems to be the address of a friend or colleague • Delete spam messages as soon as you’ve reported it • I f you think that your PC or work station is affected by virus, report this immediately to the Service Desk • Remember – if you’re suspicious, there’s a very good chance you’re right

Developing a sustainable health system

New Royal Update As we prepare to move into the new Royal by summer 2018, there have been a number of developments across a wide range of areas in the new hospital.

Haemato-oncology services transfer As part of the Healthy Liverpool plan and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Transforming Cancer Care programme, a major new cancer hospital in Liverpool city centre will, for the first time, bring together the care of people with blood cancers with care for solid tumours.

Haemato-oncology have been split between Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Aintree University Hospital, while The Clatterbridge

Cancer Centre provides services for all other types of cancer.

Plans to bring those services together have now arrived at a significant milestone as the management of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital haemato-oncology service and its 120 members of staff transferred to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre from 1st July 2017.

The outpatient, inpatient and day case haemato-oncology services will

continue to be delivered within the Royal and in the Royal before moving into The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s new 11-floor hospital next door. The haemato-oncology service will continue to work closely with support services from the Royal in the same way they do now.

This integration will ultimately create a single haemato-oncology service across Liverpool, together with care for people with other types of cancer.

Developing a sustainable health system

Echo Environment Award Thanks to the hard work from the Trust and our partners, in April we successfully won the Echo Environment Corporate Responsibility Award 2017.

This was a joint bid with Carillion for the new Royal sustainable communities programme, which has three main strands: supporting skills and jobs, local businesses and the community.

From the start of the new Royal sustainable communities programme we planned to support a wide range of people and provide lasting skills and assistance to help lift people out of poverty.

The awards let businesses and community groups raise awareness and gain recognition for the range of green projects and initiatives underway in the region.

By the end of 2016/17 we had 126 apprentices, in addition to Carillion supporting more than 250 new entrant trainees. There have been 82 placements

Collecting the award was our head of sustainability Ian Stenton and Alison Valentine the community regeneration manager for Carillion.

The project’s third upskill programme took place earlier in the year, supporting local long-term unemployed people to gain skills, qualifications and confidence.

Of the 20 people that attended the 2016 upskill course, 18 gained employment; nine were offered positions on-site and two of the trainees are now in their own accommodation away from hostels.

Eight people completed the 2017 programme and even as the new Royal project comes to a close Carillion and Liverpool in Work are supported by other construction companies to enable the trainees to still get on-site training.

Ian said: “It was great to be recognised locally for the work that the Trust has undertaken in conjunction with Carillion to leave a lasting legacy from the new Royal construction project.

Ian added: “The awards provided an opportunity to celebrate the outcomes of the project, such as exceeding targets for apprentices and work experience placements and some of the more innovative aspects such as the upskill programme for local long-term unemployed people and the opportunity for local people to gain NVQs through Carillion’s Learning Centre.”

“The awards night was even more special because it was hosted at the Isla Gladstone conservatory in Stanley Park; a month earlier we had been in Stanley Park planting 50 cherry trees with local school children as part of NHS Sustainability Day and Carillion Sustainability Week celebrations.

“In addition, we shared a table with sustainability colleagues from the University of Liverpool, who won the Carbon Champion award, so it was a successful night for our partners from the Liverpool Knowledge Quarter sustainability network too.”

Even after we move in to the new Royal it is hoped that the support and training provided will ensure that many of the people working on the project will go on to further employment.

Plans to improve Liverpool’s orthopaedic services A public consultation on the proposals for a single orthopaedic service across Liverpool is open until 15 September.

Clinicians in the orthopaedic teams at the Royal and Broadgreen and Aintree hospitals believe patient care would be improved by bringing the orthopaedic specialists together as a single service.

The proposals mean that most elective surgery would take place at Broadgreen in the future, while most emergency and trauma orthopaedic surgery would take place at Aintree.

The proposals would also affect some ENT, urology and general surgery services.

Orthopaedic services are used by people with injuries or diseases affecting their bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles or nerves. They include both planned procedures such as hip and knee replacements, and unplanned, emergency procedures caused by major traumas such as a road traffic accident or industrial accident.

Exceptional patient experience

Where would you spend your last 1000 days?

If you had 1000 days left to live, how many of those days would you want to spend in a hospital bed?

That was the question our staff were asking as they came together to discuss how we can get patients back to their loved ones as soon as possible.

The SAFER and Red2Green workshop, hosted in partnership with the Emergency Care Improvement Programme, saw staff from a wide range of departments make pledges to improve patient flow.

Lisa Shakeshaft, SAFER matron, said: “Red2Green works as part of the SAFER Bundle. Sometimes patients spend days in hospital that do not directly contribute towards their discharge; we believe that by working better together we can reduce the number of these ‘red days’ in favour of value-adding ‘green days’.

“It’s about all members of a multidisciplinary team starting the day by asking whether it’s going to be a red day or green day for each patient.

“If it’s going to be a red day, staff can then look to resolve those problems early on. If they’re unable to, appropriate escalation measures kick in that could involve social care, or multiple levels of the organisation.

“One of the key principles of Red2Green is ‘doing today’s work today’. This has relevance for all professional and managerial staff working with patients day-to-day. A critical component is identifying constraints and working together to find local solutions to address them.”

ECIP added: “Red2Green also works by encouraging patients to ask more questions about their care their discharge plans, their readiness to go home and

where possible encouraging them to get up, get dressed and keeping moving while in hospital.”

SAFER Week across the Trust discharges. On Thursday 27 April we had 200 patients discharged from hospital beds that day, which is a fantastic achievement.”

Wards across the Trust focussed on embedding the SAFER framework in their departments and used the week to highlight potential challenges.

It also includes ensuring the flow of patients to inpatient wards start as soon as possible before 10am while also aiming to discharge 33% of patients before midday with all medications prescribed and orders given to the pharmacy by 3pm the day before the patient’s discharge date.

The SAFER Bundle outlines that all patients are reviewed by a senior clinician by midday, every day, and all patients are given an expected discharge date and are aware of their discharge plans.

Lisa Shakeshaft, SAFER matron, said: “During SAFER Week, we found that there is a clear correlation between having more wards carrying out board rounds before 12 noon and increasing the number of

Everything you need from the Trust in your pocket After months of development, the brand-new staff app is available to download for free on the Apple App Store and Android Google Play store.

The Staff App enables you to access everything you need from the Trust, including the latest staff news, important files, policies and documents, mandatory training, information on the new Royal and access to ESR to book holidays, view entitlements, access your payslips, exclusive deals for our staff and more.

It’s also possible to complete important documents including your appraisal

through the app from anywhere and the ability to save the documents allow you to come back to as and when you please, whether from the app or on your Trust computer.

All you need to do to get the staff app is to put bit.ly/HospitalApp into your mobile’s web browser, put in your last name, your employee number (which can be found on your payslip or through ESR), set a password and then click one of the links for either Apple devices or Android devices. Once you have the app, your username will be your employee number and you simply enter the password you set.

Welcome from the lead governor Welcome to the latest edition of your Membership Newsletter. We’ve decided to combine this newsletter with the Trust’s staff magazine Insight. This is so we can share more information about the Trust with members and also share our membership updates even further.

  As a member of the Trust, you are a supporter and stakeholder and play an important role in the development of hospital services, both now and in the future.

In this combined edition you can read about the upcoming Make a Difference Awards, the inspirational story of how Margie Shields

marked her 200th treatment for terminal cancer, and how Liverpool is leading the way at the forefront of Ebola research. You can also keep up to date with upcoming members events, the Knowsley Flower Show and find out more about the Trust’s AGM. The NHS is already experiencing exceptionally high demands on service which, like the cold winter months, can cause our hospitals to become very busy. I would like to thank staff from across the Trust for their dedication in ensuring patients remain safe and receive high standards of care.

The Membership and Engagement Committee recently met to discuss

how improvements can be made for members. We explored a number of local events to attend so we can expand our membership base, as well as investigating ways we could make the Membership Newsletter more accessible for those who are visually impaired.

Further updates from these membership meetings will be available in future editions of this newsletter.

As a member of the Trust, you are a supporter and stakeholder and play an important role in the development of hospital services, both now and in the future. We will endeavour to keep you updated of any further developments and we thank you again for your support and interest in our hospitals.

We want members to be involved with our hospitals. As a member you’ll have the opportunity to take part in surveys and special projects related to our services. None of this is compulsory and it’s up to you how involved you are. You may opt just to be kept up to date with developments.

Showcasing our clinical trials On Friday 19 May, we opened our doors for a public showcase to highlight life-changing clinical trials and research taking place across the Trust in celebration of International Clinical Trials Day.

The Trust is at the forefront of new treatment for conditions such as cancer and dementia, conducting ‘first in human’

With just under 300 studies taking place, the Trust is also looking into the treatment of conditions like stroke and asthma that affect millions of people around the globe.

Research staff were on hand at the Market Place to explain clinical research, career opportunities and how to get involved, through our research database ‘Consent 4 Consent’.

Kate Dodd, clinical trials recruitment manager, said: “Volunteering for a health study helps to develop lifesaving treatments.

Many of the common treatments that we are all familiar with today will have been as a result of a clinical trial.

“If you want to help shape the future of healthcare, ask the person treating you if you can get involved in research – this could be your GP, consultant, surgeon, nurse or therapist or call us on 0151 706 4863.”

Representatives from partner organisations including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Covance were also on hand to talk about the benefits of clinical trials for healthcare and current opportunities across the region.

Ebola survivors have a ‘unique’ retinal scar Researchers from the St.Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal in partnership with The University of Liverpool have conducted a study of Ebola survivors to determine if the virus has any specific effects on the back on the eye using an ultra widefield retinal camera.

The team, led by Dr Paul Steptoe and Ophthalmology Consultant, Nicholas Beare, compared eye examinations of Post Ebola Syndrome sufferers in Sierra Leone and the control population.

A total of 82 Ebola survivors who had previously reported ocular symptoms and 105 unaffected controls from civilian and military personnel underwent ophthalmic examination.

The results of this research shows that around 15% of Ebola survivors examined have a retinal scar that appears specific to the disease. Scientists believe this is because

the brain, spinal cord, and eyes are simply too delicate and important to withstand the inflammation that’s typical of an immune response to infection.

Dr Steptoe, said: “The distribution of these retinal scars or lesions provides the first observational evidence that the virus enters the eye via the optic nerve to reach the retina in a similar way to West Nile Virus. Luckily, the scars appear to spare the central part of the eye so vision is preserved. Follow up studies are ongoing to assess for any potential recurrence of Ebola eye disease.

“Our study also provides preliminary evidence that in survivors with cataracts causing reduced vision but without evident active eye inflammation (uveitis), aqueous fluid analysis does not contain Ebola virus therefore enabling access to cataract surgery for survivors.”

New era for palliative and end of life care Centre brings together world-leading Clinical and Academic Expertise Liverpool’s world-leading work in palliative and end of life care has entered an exciting new era with the establishment of a new Academic Palliative and End of Life Care Centre at the Royal.

The establishment of the Academic Centre follows the opening last year of our innovative and ground-breaking Academic Palliative Care Unit for patients with the most complex, high-dependency palliative and end of life care needs and their families, which works alongside our Academic Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team and supportive care services, and the rating of our Trust-wide end of life care services as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Research, innovation, education and training activities are driven through our Marie Curie

Palliative Care Institute at the University of Liverpool. Key research projects include international collaboration to evaluate the quality of care for cancer patients at the end of their lives and research on the safety of common end of life care medications.

Chief executive, Aidan Kehoe, who is executive sponsor for the Academic Centre said: “Providing compassionate clinical care for patients towards the end of their lives and their families is one of the most important things that we do. The establishment of the Academic Palliative and End of Life Care Centre at the Trust is an investment that will ensure our patients and families continue to benefit from the very latest, evidence-based care whilst we continue to push forward new research and innovations to continually improve care for the future.”

Brave Margie rings bell for treatment milestone When the sound of a ringing bell can be heard throughout the Linda McCartney Centre, it usually rings to celebrate the completion of a person’s cancer treatment.

For Margie Shields, however, the sound means something very different.

On 21 June, Margie rang the Linda McCartney Centre bell, which is seen as a symbol of hope, to celebrate her 200th treatment for her terminal bone cancer and remind everyone that “it’s still possible to make the most of your life”.

The Linda McCartney Centre brings together a state of the art breast assessment unit, a purpose built chemotherapy unit, an outpatient unit and a research and development department to oversee over 500 different forms of research within the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Mother-of-one Margie said: “I’ve heard the bell being rung, but never thought I would get to ring it myself because my treatment is never going to finish.”

Margie, 67, from Huyton, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.

Following a successful double mastectomy, Margie received further devastating news when she was diagnosed with metastatic bone cancer just two years later.

Margie remembers suspecting something wasn’t right with her

breast in 2002, but admits the second diagnosis came out of nowhere.

“In 2005 my daughter pointed out a lump on my chest. I immediately contacted the Linda McCartney Centre again to make an appointment. After having a bone scan, my worst fears were confirmed when I was told I had bone cancer. I was devastated.

“I always try to not think too far into the future; I want to live my life now. The only time I have thought that far ahead is when I told myself that I wanted to be around to see my daughter growing up. She gave me the strength to fight my cancer.”

“Nowadays, people think bone cancer is the end but I am proof that with the right treatment you can live for a long time and can make the most of your life. I have had 15 great years and I hope to have 15 more.”

Queen’s Award for our Care for the Dying, Volunteers Our Care for the Dying Volunteer Service has been honoured to receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2017.

The Care for the Dying Volunteers provide support for patients whose family are not able to be present and also enable families to take a break from patient’s bedsides to rest, eat or take a shower knowing their loved one is not being left alone.

This award was created by The Queen in 2002 to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, recognising excellence in voluntary activities. Volunteer Coordinator Alison Germain, and volunteer representative Pauline Brenigan attended the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on 1st June to represent the service.

CFS facility opens in Broa The Trust recently celebrated the official opening of the new Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Facility at Broadgreen.The official opening was performed jointly by Dr Fred Nye and Nanette Mellor, chief executive of The Brain Charity.

Guests were able to find out firsthand what it’s like to live with CFS on a daily basis and learn more about how to manage the condition.

A raffle prize of a fruit basket was kindly provided by the fruit vendor on the Broadgreen site.

“I was watching the Grand Prix with my son and I suddenly felt very unwell.”

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a longterm illness with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme exhaustion.

CFS symptoms include overwhelming fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, flu-like symptoms, and feeling dizzy or sick.

Last year the unit received just under 700 referrals after originally being set up to receive closer to 250 patients.

Les, who has lived with CFS for three years, remembers when he first began to feel unwell.

Les said: “I lived a busy lifestyle and had a very hectic job. I’d just come back from a holiday in the Lake District with my family and was watching the Grand Prix with my son and I suddenly felt very unwell; at first I thought I was having a mini stroke.”

“I have to manage my energy levels. It impacts you and your family 24/7; you can’t get away from it. My family have had to adapt to me being a very different person now. I often think my son must be wondering where his father has gone.

The former school teacher is keen to promote the symptoms of CFS and to encourage others to find out more about the symptoms.

Some people might think it’s just about being lazy, but it’s not just the physical affects; it’s the cogitative and emotional affects, too. The CFS unit at Broadgreen has

Grateful patient leaves legacy to hospital that saved his eye A grateful former patient is set to return to the city that saved his eye, and is leaving a substantial legacy so that others might benefit in future.

Rudy Hughes, 88, from Moreton, was just 12 years old in March 1941 when a freak accident involving a toy soldier’s bayonet resulted in a punctured eyeball and a trip to St Paul’s Eye Hospital, Liverpool.

There his eye was stitched by hospital surgeons in a procedure which, Rudy was told, had literally saved his eye.

76 years later and a grateful Rudy is returning to St Paul’s to confirm his bequest and to see how his legacy might be spent in the fight against sight loss.

“I just pulled the figure out of my eye – I didn’t think much of it. It was only four or five days later when I mentioned to my

mother that I couldn’t see through that eye that she took me to see a doctor.”

Rudy is similarly calm when describing the moment when a German bomber, probably off course from its Liverpool docks target, dropped a bomb close to the hospital (St Paul’s had been evacuated to a site away from the city centre).

“All of the hospital windows came flying in, there was glass all over the bed – it was great fun!”

He may now be 88 years of age but Rudy has never forgotten the service he received at St Paul’s. “I owe them quite a lot – I’ve had the life I’ve had because of St Paul’s.”

St Paul’s surgeon, Professor Stephen Kaye, said: “Rudy’s generous gift will allow us to help young and old alike receive the best in preventative and restorative eye treatment, and we encourage others to consider making a similar pledge when writing their wills.”

Fittingly, the ceremony is held each year on International Nurses’ Day. Jo Marinas, head of clinical education and learning, said: “I am amazed that the programme has grown to include all staff groups. The badge which is awarded after completion of the programme is the symbol as commitment, dedication and competence of our staff.”

Nurses gathered in the Royal’s Education Centre to celebrate the day and take advantage of some muchdeserved free therapy sessions as well as hear more about nursing technology and practice advancements.

Chief nurse Lisa Grant, who began her nurse training at the Royal, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our nursing workforce.

They show their skill, passion and commitment to our patients on a daily basis. It was that passion that made me want to be a student nurse at the Royal and work with highly-skilled nurses who wanted to give the very best patient care that they can.”

Loyal to the Royal One of the Royal’s amazing volunteer fundraisers, Sudesh Khurana, who raised an impressive £134,320 over 10 years, sadly passed away on Friday 21 April.

Sudesh began raising funds for The Linda McCartney Centre in 2002, and was a flamboyant character brightening up the Royal wearing his immaculate white suit and cowboy hat.

Sudesh’s funeral took place on 4 May at Springwood Crematorium and his family continued to support the hospital by asking for any donations to The Linda McCartney Centre.

He was ‘loyal to the Royal’ (which was one of his mottos) until the end as he passed away in the hospital, a place he loved to be.

Volunteering for us for many years he raised money in a number of ways, including shaking a tin in Central Station, Lime Street Station and St John’s Precinct every weekend.

R Charity’s community fundraiser, Angela McShane, said: “When we started selling scratch cards in the Royal we knew he would be the ideal person for the role, so we set him up with a little stand and a disco ball and he did the rest! With his mantra of “buy them, try them, scratch ‘em, match ‘em” he was well known around the hospital by staff and patients.

“Unfortunately, he was forced to retire in 2012 due to ill health but he raised a

Ward 2 BGH My daughter recently had her tonsils out and wa s looked after on Ward 2.

At just turned 18 it wa s her first experience of an adult hospital. Her nurse wa s very caring and took this into consid eration when allocating her bed, they gave her a side roo m so that I was able to stay with her. They encouraged her to stay overnight to be looked after but let her make all the decisions. I would highly recommend ward 2 at Broadgreen :) Visited in June 2017. Pos ted on 08 June 2017
