Thank you Winter is traditionally a challenging period for all NHS services. Recently we – along with colleagues in trusts across the country – have seen an unprecedented pressures.

It makes me extremely proud that you have taken on this challenge while continuing to deliver the highest standards of care for our patients with the utmost compassion and commitment.

You should be proud of the fact that the NHS is now treating more patients than ever before.

On 27 December 2016, for instance, emergency departments like ours saw 60,215 patients – a record number in the NHS. This demand was also reflected in our Emergency Department, which had one of its busiest days so far, seeing around 300 patients.

Our amazing staff Each month, staff from across our Trust are recognised for the part they play in giving our patients the best possible experience when they come to our hospitals.

Colleagues, patients, carers, and visitors can nominate someone who they think deserves to be recognised for the excellent care and service they provide and the difference it has made.

Teams can be nominated for Team of the Month, while volunteers are recognised in the Volunteer of the Month.

Winners of the Employee, Team and Volunteer awards throughout the year will be shortlisted for the Special Recognition Award at the 2017 Make a Difference Staff Awards.

The award is open to all staff including those working behind the scenes - either in support functions or non-clinical roles - or to those who work on the front line.

Developing a sustainable health system

Staff prepare for move to “breath-taking” new Royal Excited Royal staff are planning for the future as they prepare to move into the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Plans are in place to move into the new state of the art £335million, all single bedroom hospital by summer 2018.

The Trust’s redevelopment team have been working with more than 5000 members of staff from all departments to ensure services run seamlessly during the move to the new building, as well as making sure staff can get to grips with their new surroundings.

The existing Royal was built in 1978, bringing together four hospitals: the Royal Infirmary, the Royal Sothern Hospital, David Lewis Northern Hospital and, later, St Pauls Eye Hospital.

Since then many advances have been made, ranging from treatments for blindness to breast cancer and blood disorders.

Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, said: “This is a really exciting time to be working at the Trust and to be part of this city. The new Royal will make a big difference to the people of Merseyside and will enable us to provide our patients with the very latest treatments and state-of-the-art technology.

“It’s the start of something fantastic for this great city. The new Royal will sit at the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter and will welcome the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre to the Royal campus in 2019, enabling us take another leap forward in cancer care.”

Staff have been having a look at their new work areas and facilities, with Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson also grabbing a hard

hat and hi-vis jacket to see the “breathtaking” new hospital.

Mayor Anderson said: “It’s absolutely breathtaking, it really is! I’m absolutely amazed and overwhelmed with the scale and the size of the building. Seeing it for myself, I can see how this facility will provide fantastic benefits to patients, staff, and visitors.

“The new Royal is such an important development that’s taking shape in our city.

It will bring about world class healthcare for the people of our community and provide an essential partnership in innovation and advances in science and medical research.”

Once open, the new Royal will be the largest all single room hospital in England. The new hospital will contain 646 beds, all in individual en-suite rooms, spread across 23 wards. There will be a 40-bed critical care unit and 18 operating theatres.

Developing a sustainable health system

Accelerator takes shape The Liverpool Knowledge Quarter’s latest and most ambitious development is rapidly taking shape.

Due to open in July 2017 – and with its construction on schedule – the Accelerator is a £25million joint project between our Trust and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

The striking building on the corner of Daulby Street and Prescot Street is a facility for small and medium sized businesses who are focused on the life science and health sector.

Companies, like these who traditionally struggle to market to health care providers, will benefit from being on the health campus.

These companies bring healthcare and life science solutions otherwise unmet by the larger companies that typically trade with the health service.

The Accelerator is taking shape

This supports our ambitious research and development agenda and will allow our patients to access the latest available healthcare innovations.

Dr Steve Powell, Liverpool Life Science Accelerator, said: “With Accelerator’s focus on disease resistance, we have already started to attract a broad spectrum of global companies.”

The range of companies include ‘Big Data’ companies who use grid computing algorithms to spot disease before clinically evident, wireless real time vital signs sensing technologies, chemical companies building the next generation of medical polymers and coatings and spin outs from larger companies who manufacture and sell insecticides and other mosquito attack prevention systems.

Dr Powell added: “Within the life science community there is a real buzz around the Accelerator and for the Royal this new facility will bring innovation to the Liverpool Health Campus benefiting our patients first and supporting the economy by providing many new jobs.

“This facility may be outside the scope of normal NHS activity but it shows our commitment as a Trust to look at alternative ways of making a significant difference to health, whether locally or through the global impact that the Accelerator will have.”

Quality, Efficiency and Productivity The Service Improvement and Excellence team support the Trust in the delivery of its strategic priorities by reviewing key processes and services with the aim of enhancing patient experience whilst improving efficiencies.

“By getting things right first time, we will ultimately improve the quality of care to our patients and the quality of our services.”

The department has an active programme of work. The team are currently supporting improvement in a number of key areas: •D eveloping new and optimising existing clinical pathways to deliver a better patient experience •R educing delays associated to patient throughput ensuring patients are discharged appropriately • Standardising processes

We sat down with the team to hear a bit more about some of the projects.

“We held a QEP Week in 2016 which staff got really involved with. We even held a Dragon’s Den style Pitchathon where staff pitched their improvement ideas to a panel of experts, looking to get their support.

Patricia said: “I’m working with our Staff Bank to reduce avoidable agency spends. We’re extremely proud of our staff and an increase in shifts worked by our staff will enhance the experience of our patients.

“The Temporary Staffing team has expanded their pool of bank workers; setting up bank roles for jobs such as Paramedics, Healthcare Scientists and Therapies staff. There is also a ‘pool’ of bank workers with no fixed ward to report to. These nurses and health care assistants work over a variety of wards depending on where they have been allocated to that day. Despite the success, we’re constantly working to improve the experience of both our patients and staff.”

Royal teaches new skills to Norwegian health workers Norwegian healthcare workers are looking to mirror the work of our Emergency Department staff following a trip to the Royal to learn more about the Advanced Nurse Practitioner role.

Gry Randmal Rygh, Kim Gaarde and Beyar Hafzullah from Drammen Hospital nursing staff, situated just outside of Norway’s capital city Oslo, visited the Royal to learn more about the role ANPs play in the treatment of patients in the Emergency Department.

Gry, who works in the Emergency Department in Drammen Hospital, wanted to take vital information back to Drammen.

She said: “We don’t have the ANP role in Norway at all so we have to build up the structure from the beginning and we were lucky to be invited to come and see how things are here in Liverpool.”

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner role has been developed over a number of years in the UK and the staff from Drammen were interested in finding what lessons were learnt in implementing the role successfully.

Aaron Geoghegan, an advanced nurse practitioner, invited the group over from Norway following trips to Drammen to teach more about the ANP role.

He said: “Norway is in a unique position.

They have never had ANPs before, so they’re at the very beginning of their development.

“One thing I would be proud to say about this department is that we as a team truly provide the high-end of Advanced Nurse Practitioner care – but it has taken us a long time to get to this stage.

Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) are registered nurses who have expert knowledge in their field. ANPs have the ability to see, test, diagnose, treat and refer patients alongside other members of staff in the Emergency Department.

This improves the rate in which the department treats patients, as well as helping patients feel they are being treated effectively.

Norwegian healthcare workers want to learn more about our advanced nurse practitioners

As part of their role, ANPs are also involved in education of staff and helping to improve leadership.

During their visit, the group were impressed with the way ANPs worked in the Emergency Department.

“We wanted the Norwegian team to learn from mistakes we had made as a country with the ANP role, so they don’t repeat the same mistakes in their development of the role.

“I want them to learn, grow on their own and start teaching themselves, but use Liverpool as a prime example of what can be achieved.

“The group were absolutely brilliant during the trip. They were engaging, friendly and interested.

Beyar Hafzullah said: “I’m inspired by how advanced nurse practitioners work, the treatment they give to the patient and that decision making is in their own hands.

“I also couldn’t have been prouder of how our team responded as well. They were informative, welcoming and demonstrated the high level of skill that I have boasted about when visiting Norway.

“In Norway we have to ask permission from physicians to treat a patient first so it’s important we get that opportunity to treat our patients back in Norway.”

“What I hope to do is form further international links to put Liverpool on the map as a shining example of what can be achieved.”

Heart-warming dedication NHS Improvement’s chief executive Jim Mackey recently visited our hard working staff in the Emergency Department.

He said: “It was really heart-warming to visit the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. I have witnessed lots of fantastic people working in incredibly difficult circumstances throughout the hospital to deliver high quality patient care.

“I have seen the dedication of staff under such pressured circumstances in A&E, AMU and also on the Palliative Care Unit, which fills me with great hope in our NHS and our committed and compassionate workforce. I was humbled to see the staff ethos and attitude towards patients and the superb environment in which patients are treated.”

Linda’s plaque now sits in Broadgreen’s Alexandra Wing

Plaque unveiled for inspirational member of staff Family members and colleagues of Linda Holmes attended an emotional unveiling of a plaque to commemorate her life.

Linda, who worked for the Trust for over 27 years, sadly died in January 2015.

Karen Curley, directorate manager of the Emergency Department at the Royal, said: “Linda was my first ward sister and an amazing role model to me and many others throughout her long nursing career.

“She was innovative and unique in her professional approach to nursing and I always felt that I could rely on her guidance and wise counsel. Linda was passionate about delivering quality patient care and instilled her values in all those who were fortunate enough to have known and worked with her.”

Let’s talk about mental health...

In November 2016 the Health and Wellbeing team held a ‘Let’s talk about mental health’ event to encourage members of staff to discuss how they are feeling, both inside and out of work.

Managing the menopause An afternoon to highlight ways to effectively manage the menopause took place in the Royal to help staff feeling the effects of the menopause.

The Health and Wellbeing team hosted an awareness event on 9 March to highlight how staff, including managers and colleagues, can help others who are dealing with the menopause.

In our hospitals, it’s estimated that over 20% of staff will experience symptoms of menopause at any one time, which can lead to personal discomfort.

In partnership with menopause support group ‘Menopause Exchange’ the event provided people with the confidence they need to speak to managers about their menopause and gives managers more information in order to support staff.

The session also provided tips and techniques to help staff cope with their conditions from healthcare professionals.

Mark Caffrey, health and wellbeing manager, said: “We have been promoting greater support and awareness of issues associated with menopause for a number of years now and this year we are planning to do even more.

One in four absences in the Trust are recorded as anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress or other psychiatric issues and we have an average of 60 staff off sick each day from mental health issues.

At the event members of the HR team highlighted some key facts around mental health and how we can all benefit from seeking support with any problems we have relating to mental health and some of the support available.

Services include the Staff Support Service – a 24-hour support line for staff to call with any issues relating to mental health. This helpline can be used to talk about any issues including problems outside of work, as well as work-related concerns.

Carla Burns, assistant director of HR and OD, said: “We want to support staff as much as possible with any issues relating to mental health.

“We recognise the importance of creating an open and honest environment and we hope events like this encourage staff to talk more openly about their mental health.”

Other support available includes the short two-hour ‘creating a mentally healthy workplace’ training available to all staff.

This course aims to increase awareness of some of the issues and the terminology around mental health, help line managers understand the vital role they play in creating a mentally healthy workplace and to recognise the support that is available to assist managers and staff in this area.

Trust aims to improve sickness absence in 2017 The Royal and Broadgreen want to do more to improve sickness rates in 2017, by highlighting established support to staff.

Over the past 12 months, more than 2,200 members of staff have had 100% attendance records. To try and improve on this figure in the next 12 months, the HR team is looking to do more to prevent staff going off sick.

The team are encouraging staff to consider a range of services available to staff including a revised Managing Sickness Absence policy, Occupational Health, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Dieticians.

A wide range of physical activity initiatives are available to help staff to get active and keep fit and the Trust recently received a Gold Award for physical activity from NHS England. There is also a comprehensive health and wellbeing strategy to improve the health of employees.

Another key area the team will focus on to improve sickness absence is making sure managers are trained and supported to address problems associated with staff sickness.

This support includes a newly implemented Sickness Support team to help managers and staff to address sickness absence in an effective and proactive manner.

Nick Jones, senior HR advisor in the Business HR team, said: “We are typical of many other NHS organisations in that our staff sickness absence levels tends to increase during the winter months.

“Having a fit and healthy workforce is key to continue to deliver a high standard of patient care under challenging circumstances.

“We’re committed to reducing sickness absence levels. Only by us all working together and being in work can we make a significant difference to the experience patients receive when they come through our doors.”

Getting the #jabdone Six Merseyside NHS trusts joined forces this winter to encourage staff to get their annual flu vaccination.

The #jabdone campaign saw staff from the Royal and Broadgreen, Alder Hey, Clatterbridge, Liverpool Community Health, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and The Walton Centre take to social media to show their support for flu vaccinations.

and wider community from the latest strains of the flu virus.

“Flu can be unpleasant, but if you’re otherwise healthy, it will usually clear up on its own within week. However, flu can be more severe in the over 65s, pregnant women, children and people with underlying health conditions. Get you #jabdone and protect yourself, your patients and your loved ones.”

Welcome to our Filipino nurses Over the coming months, Filipino nurses will be joining us following a recruitment campaign in the Philippines.

We are really pleased to have them join the team here at the Royal to expand our clinical workforce and continue to deliver world class care.

These highly skilled staff will be deployed in various areas across the Trust and we would like to wish them every success in their new role and in their new home.

They will initially be employed as Assistant Practitioners whilst preparing for their NMC Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Once registered with the NMC, they will start work as registered nurses.

Prior to arriving in the UK, they will have undergone numerous assessments, including the International English Language Test Systems (IELTS), computerbased test (CBT) and the NMC document appraisal to meet the national guidance set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Colin Hont, deputy director of nursing, said: “We would like to welcome our new recruits to the team here at the Royal. The nurses are joining the Trust at an exciting time as we develop a new model of care to prepare us for working in the new hospital, which is progressing well. I wish them every success in their new roles in the Trust.”

Unsung hero: Volunteer Gary’s positive outlook helps others to recover Passionate volunteer Gary Thomas wants to encourage others to make a difference and become a volunteer for the Royal and Broadgreen hospitals.

Gary, a former radio operator for the Royal Navy, is using difficult moments in his life in a positive way to help others recovering from major surgery to come to terms with changes in their lives.

In 1998, following six and half years touring with the navy, Gary was forced to retire following an injury while playing football.

After leaving the navy, Gary went to work for HM Customs and Excise, but found himself in hospital needing a femoral bypass.

Gary returned to work for HM and Customs after almost a year and continued to work there, until in 2002, he suffered a heart attack and underwent a heart bypass at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

“I’m not a psychologist, social worker or a member of staff. I’m someone different to talk to who isn’t a doctor or nurse and I use that when I talk to people.”

After the operation Gary was discharged, but just days later ended up back in hospital when an abscess burst in his groin.

Gary’s condition deteriorated once again and he was rushed in for life-saving emergency surgery at the Royal after collapsing during a routine follow-up appointment. Following the operation, Gary was in a coma. He woke up to find his left leg amputated from just above the knee.

He said: “I looked down at the foot of the bed. On one side there was a lump and the other side nothing. I had to come to terms with the fact that I was now an amputee.

“It was a real shock. Even though I had done nothing wrong, my first thought was I had let my family down. I was meant to look after them and it felt like something was different now.

“I wouldn’t let my daughters see me. I was 11 and a half stone of muscle going into the hospital I came out seven stone. I was in a very low place.

“Then something changed. I’d been lying awake thinking ‘why me?’, and I felt a change and started thinking ‘why not me?’. I wasn’t any different to anybody else, so why should I sit around feeling sorry for myself?

“I grabbed the zimmer frame by my bed and forced myself to move. It took me hours

He said: “After my op, I was never diagnosed with depression, but in hindsight I think I may have had post-traumatic stress disorder. I had been through a few roller coaster years.

“During my rehab someone said to me ‘you were broken, but now you’re fixed’ and that’s how I look at it now.”

After both his leg amputation and his bypass, Gary felt the care he received from nurses and doctors was exceptional, with some staff staying after shifts to talk with him.

However Gary felt that sometimes he needed a person who understood how he was feeling, who had experienced going through an amputation.

“After my amputation especially, my emotions were very raw. I’d speak to people and feel they didn’t understand how I was feeling, because they hadn’t dealt with it themselves.”

“I’ve had difficult times in my life, but I wouldn’t change anything – things happen for a reason. I use my experiences to reassure people and help them to come to terms with whatever is going on in their life.

“I get peace of mind knowing some people I speak to are in a place I have been emotionally. I was lucky enough to come out the other side and I want to help others out too.

“I think volunteering because you care is the ultimate reason to help. If you have passion and you want to make a difference, you’ll love doing it even more.”

Developing a world class workforce

Award for Roald Dahl Centre Blood disease specialists at the Royal have been recognised for making a difference to both patients and staff in the North West.

Professor Cheng Toh, consultant haematologist, and his team at the Roald Dahl Centre were awarded the ‘Team Outstanding Achievement – Clinical’ award at the 2016 NHS North West Leadership Academy Awards.

The awards celebrate the fantastic work that is going on across the North West and showcase its leaders’ and teams’ hard work, perseverance and the positive impact they have.

The Trust’s Academic Palliative Care Unit, Nuclear Medicine Department and Sepsis Improvement team were also shortlisted across three separate categories in the 2016 NHS North West Leadership Academy Awards, recognising exceptional patient experience, great leadership, living the NHS values and outstanding teamwork.

The Roald Dahl Centre, located within the Royal, opened in 2001. It received funding from the Roald Dahl Foundation because of the vision to deliver “Marvellous Medicine” to patients with blood conditions.

Professor Cheng-Hock Toh and his team at the Roald Dahl Centre were awarded the ‘Team Outstanding Achievement – Clinical’ Its vision has grown and is one of a few nationally accredited Haemophilia Comprehensive Care centres that has also achieved European accreditation. In addition, it is also accredited nationally for Haemoglobinopathy services, which includes sickle cell disease.

Professor Cheng-Hock Toh, clinical lead for the Roald Dahl Centre, said: “It is fantastic

to receive this award as it reinforces the high standards of care that we provide to our patients on a daily basis.

“We have developed a very comprehensive care service for patients with blood disorders and regularly receive positive feedback about how welcoming our clinic is. Roald Dahl was a muchloved character; it’s important for us that our service is much-loved by our patients.”

Sharing and learning We recently held our sixth Share and Learn event, which saw more than 60 members of staff gather to share their learning with each other.

The mini awards ceremony recognises long service awards, retirement, employee, team, and volunteer of the month and those who have been awarded Trust qualifications.

Plans to improve orthopaed services across Liverpool un The local NHS is presenting proposals for a new, joined-up approach to delivering hospital-based adult orthopaedic services across Liverpool.

Introducing the SAFER Bundle One of the ways we and other Merseyside trusts are trying to improve patient flow across our hospitals is implementing something called the SAFER Bundle across all wards.

The SAFER Bundle outlines that ensures all patients are reviewed by a senior clinician by midday, every day, and all patients are given an expected discharge date and are aware of their discharge plans.

It also includes ensuring the flow of patients to inpatient wards start as soon as possible before 10am while also aiming to discharge 33% of patients before midday with all medications prescribed and orders given to the pharmacy by 3pm the day before the patient’s discharge date.

Dr Nadine Carol said: “SAFER Bundle, for me, is very much about geriatric medicine. The difference between the SAFER Bundle and what we used to do is that the board rounds happen at 9am regularly, all members of the multi-disciplinary team are there and it’s led by a consultant. There’s a lot of senior input so responsibilities for actions are given out early in the day in the hope that we can get patients home quicker.”

Alejandro Martinez, charge nurse on Ward 2B, said: “Having the multi-disciplinary team involved early is a huge advantage because we’ve got teams such as therapies involved early on. Patients are benefiting from early assessment which guides us with early discharge plans like if the patients’ needs an intermediate care bed or if they have any goals to achieve.

If approved, a public consultation on a single orthopaedic service for the city is expected to take place in Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton during the summer.

This would be the first of a series of proposals to bring teams from different hospitals in Liverpool together as a single service.

Orthopaedic services are used by people with injuries or diseases affecting their bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles or nerves. They include both planned procedures such as hip and knee replacements, and unplanned, emergency procedures caused by major traumas such as a road traffic accident or industrial accident.

Currently in Liverpool, these services are provided by two separate teams based at Aintree University Hospital and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals.

NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group, the organisation which is responsible for planning NHS care in Liverpool, has been working closely with both Trusts and neighbouring Clinical Commissioning Groups, to explore ways to improve these services as part of its Healthy Liverpool programme.

The proposals for improving orthopaedic services have been developed working closely with orthopaedics specialists from each hospital, who believe that in the future they should operate as part of a single, city-wide Liverpool Orthopaedic and Trauma Service. This would involve separating planned and unplanned procedures, so that they happen on different hospital sites in the future.

At the moment, patients needing planned procedures can go to either the Royal Liverpool Hospital or Aintree Hospital, but under the new proposals the vast majority of planned orthopaedic care in Liverpool would take place at Broadgreen Hospital. This would enable Aintree Hospital to better focus on caring for very seriously injured, emergency patients from across the region, as the major trauma centre for Cheshire and Merseyside.

All orthopaedic outpatient services would continue to be delivered across all three hospital sites, ensuring that the majority of orthopaedic care is able to be delivered as close to home as possible for patients.

These proposed changes would help enable local services to meet new national standards for orthopaedic care, and ensure that all patients in the area receive a consistent, high quality service.

They would also mean that all orthopaedic patients would benefit from reduced waiting

times, reduced length of stays in hospital, and fewer cancellations of planned operations.

In order to facilitate these proposals for improving adult orthopaedic services, it would be necessary to relocate some Ear Nose and Throat services from Broadgreen Hospital to the regional Merseyside Head and Neck Cancer Centre at Aintree Hospital, and some Urology and general surgery services currently based at Broadgreen would need to move to the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital site.

Daniel Brown, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, said: “There have recently been several major new national directives about the way that we are expected to manage orthopaedics and traumas in the future. These are all designed to improve patient safety, experience and outcomes.

However, the current system in Merseyside does not allow us to deliver these changes effectively.

“By combining the orthopaedic and trauma services at Aintree, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen hospitals into a single service, working together, we have the opportunity to not only meet these new standards, but also to become a national centre of excellence for orthopaedic and trauma care. There is 100% support from the orthopaedic consultants across the city for this proposal, and we are very excited about this project.”

Dr Fiona Lemmens, clinical director for the Healthy Liverpool hospitals programme, said: “We’ve been working with local orthopaedics doctors to look at how hospital services could be improved, which has led to these proposals for a single, city-wide orthopaedics service. We believe this way of working offers real benefits for patient care, making it easier for Liverpool’s hospitals to share expertise and training, attract the most talented staff, and meet the highest clinical standards.

“However, it’s important to stress that no decisions have been made at this stage. Any

changes to current orthopaedic services would be set out in a public consultation, asking people for their views, which we hope will take place during the summer.”

On 14 March, a feasibility study setting out the proposals for making changes to Liverpool’s orthopaedic services will be presented to Liverpool City Council’s Social Care and Health Select Committee.

The proposals will also be presented to Overview and Scrutiny Committees in Sefton on 21 March and Knowsley on 30 March, because any changes to orthopaedic services in Liverpool would also affect patients from these neighbouring boroughs who use them too.

If approved, the CCG is planning to hold a 12-week public consultation during the summer, in which it will ask people across Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton for their views, in order to help shape and refine them.

Adult orthopaedic services are the first of a number of areas of hospital care in the city currently being considered for development into a single service with city-wide delivery, as part of Healthy Liverpool plans.

Other areas currently being considered for a single, city-wide service include cardiology, cancer services, and stroke services.

Our two-way text service now allows patients to confirm, cancel or rearrange outpatient appointments when they receive their reminder text on their phone.

The service, which makes managing appointments much easier for patients, will also help to reduce the number of missed appointments, which could have been given to other patients.

Figures show that over 150,000 people missed their outpatient appointment at the Royal and Broadgreen since 2015, with each missed appointment costing around £160 on average.

Nationally, missed appointments – or ‘Did Not Attends’ - cost the NHS around £1billion a year and cause longer waiting times for other patients.

Patients will receive a text seven days before their appointment and 48-hours before if there is no reply to the original text.

Merseyside patients can now confirm hospital appointments by text To benefit from the service, patients will need to make sure the Trust and GP have their up to date contact details.

Patients will receive a phone call to their landline if the clinics don’t have access to a mobile phone number Colin Hont, deputy chief nurse, said: “Patient care is always our priority. We know that one in ten people don’t attend their appointment simply because they forgot. When someone doesn’t attend their appointment without letting us know, it can delay treatment and increase waiting times for other patients.

If we know a patient can’t attend their appointment, we can offer that space to someone else who needs it.

“We’re launching this across most of our outpatient clinics. So patients can benefit from our new texting service, we’re asking that they check that our hospitals and their GP have their most up to date contact details.”

Patients can opt out of the service by replying to the text with ‘Stop’.

Seeing our patients at Home First Local health organisations have been working together with Liverpool City Council to carry out health and social care assessments in a patient’s home instead of a hospital bed.

Home First is a joint project between our Trust, Aintree Hospitals, Liverpool Community Health, Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group, and Liverpool City Council which sees therapists identify patients who would befit from being cared for at home.

The new way of working will see eligible patients whose assessment doesn’t need to be carried out in hospital seen at home for full rehabilitation support.

In some cases, patients may identified in the Emergency Department, preventing them from needing to go to a hospital ward.

Chris Ferns from Liverpool City Council, who chairs the Home First Delivery team, said: “Home First is a way of focussing health and social care assessment, treatment, care and support, whenever possible, on a person in their own home. This may be as alternative to going into an acute hospital setting or a way of being discharged from one at the earliest appropriate time.

“It has been very successful in getting people back to how they were before they came into hospital and helping people to carrying out tasks of everyday living at home. Since last November 275 patients have gone down the route.”

Research shows that a hospital environment is not the best place for someone who is ready for discharge or who would benefit from being seen in the comfort of their own home.

Dr Paul Fitzsimmons, consultant gerontologist, said: “For patients who are ready for discharge, the hospital is not the best place for them. For patients over 60, for every week they spend bed bound in hospital, their body can age by ten years. So, once a patient is medically fit for discharge they need to be placed in the most appropriate setting for their ongoing care.”

Students and volunteers spread festive cheer for R Elderly patients at the Royal received an early Christmas surprise after local students and volunteers called in with gifts.

The Liverpool Guild and Royal Voluntary Service brought the Shoebox of Love campaign to older patients who will be too ill to leave hospital and celebrate Christmas at home with their loved ones.

Patients received scarves, hats, books, puzzles, mugs and more, making a difficult time much more enjoyable.

Dr Matt Tedford, consultant geriatrician, said: “We’d like all of our patients to be

home for Christmas but sadly this isn’t always possible. Being in hospital and away from your family on Christmas Day can be extremely difficult. We are extremely grateful to the Liverpool Guild and Royal Voluntary Service for helping to spread the festive cheer across our ward and help to put a smile on our patients’ faces.”

Sean Turner, Guild president, said: “This Christmas, over half a million older people will feel more alone than at any other time of the year and the Royal Voluntary Service, one of the Guild’s key charities for 2016-2017, are determined to stop older people becoming isolated and less independent.”

Claire Yates, Royal Voluntary Service operations manager, added: “For most of us Christmas is a time for celebration and to spend time with friends and family, but for older people spending Christmas alone in hospital, it can also be a painfully lonely time. Many older people are used to having long periods of time without company but it can be particularly difficult to spend Christmas alone, feeling as though everyone else is enjoying themselves.

“I’m delighted that we are able to spread some joy to older patients who are unable to go home for Christmas and would like thank our dedicated volunteers for coming in to hand out the presents.”

The Royal and the Vikings team up for AAA event The Royal and Widnes Vikings teamed up to invite men aged 65 and over to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening at the Select Security Stadium.

Carers passport introduced to improve patient care A carers passport has been introduced on Ward 2Y and Ward 8 in Broadgreen to help improve the experience of both patients and carers.

The passport aims to support patients, carers, friends and family and to improve communication between both staff and relatives for patients with complex needs.

The passport also aims to implement appropriate care packages with input from carers and ensure timely discharge for patients.

Information on what is available to carers while they are in hospital is all featured in the passport, as well what they should expect from our staff and how to access subsidiary parking rates at the Royal.

Margaret McLoughlin, quality matron, said: “It’s important that we include carers in the care that the patient is receiving, so we hope the passport can make our care more inclusive to carers.

“The passport will be rolled out to other wards in the future and we hope that it will become a feature across all our wards soon.”

Royal patients

An AAA is a swelling of the aorta – the main blood vessel in the body.

If an aneurysm bursts, it causes huge internal bleeding and 80% of people who suffer a ruptured AAA die before reaching hospital. An AAA is largely symptomless is most common in men aged 65 and over.

25 people took advantage of the potentially lifesaving screening, with plans to finalise more dates in the coming months.

Mandy Summers, AAA co-ordinator at the Royal, said: “The day was hugely successful and we look forward to returning to Stadium to work alongside Widnes Vikings in order to provide accessible venues for men to take up screening.

Richard Munson, community integrated director at Widnes Vikings, added: “We are really pleased to have supported 25 men to have come and accessed an AAA screening session here at Halton Stadium.

“In working with the team at the Royal, it has made us more aware of how important this screening is and how it really can save lives. Going forward, we hope to offer more AAA screening events at the stadium as part of our ‘Stadium Health Hub’ initiative delivered in conjunction with Halton Clinical Commissioning Group which aims to connect local people with services that support their health and wellbeing.”

“People can have an abdominal aortic aneurysm without realising it which is why it’s so important to get yourself checked out. If anyone received an appointment for a screen and didn’t attend for whatever reason, they would be very welcome to come along and get screened.

“Men are six times more likely to have an AAA than women and that risk increases the older you get which is why this programme is aimed at men aged 65 and over. The screening involves a quick and painless ultrasound scan which will detect

Improving the quality of life for our patients

Local charity worker donates kidney to her best friend With Christmas a distant memory, you could be forgiven for thinking the season for giving has been long forgotten for another year.

But not so in the North West as a Merseyside fundraiser gave the most precious gift of all to her friend – her kidney!

“I’d like to appeal to everyone to sign up to the Organ Donor Register, or even to consider being a living donor, as you really will be changing lives. I’ve been lucky to have a friend who is willing and able to help, but others aren’t so fortunate and rely on the kindness of strangers.”

Andy and Helen had their operations at separate hospitals, in separate cities – a common occurrence for transplant teams throughout the UK as organs are donated from all four corners of the country.

Andy Clewes, a radio DJ with Macclesfield station Silk 106.9, has suffered with chronic kidney disease since birth but it’s only been in the last few years that the illness has started to have a devastating impact on his life.

Andy and Helen, both 46, met in 2006 when Andy’s radio station ran ‘Bring A £ To Work Day’, a charity fundraising event. Helen, who is a fundraiser for local children’s charity, the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust, took part on behalf of the charity and they have remained close friends ever since.

It became apparent in 2015 that Andy’s kidney disease had progressed to the stage where a transplant would be needed and Helen didn’t hesitate to step forward.

The first step was a simple blood test to determine whether they were a match, a nerve-wracking wait which was thankfully rewarded with a very positive yes.

Andy and Helen, despite not being related, were a close match and a long year of tests began.

Helen, a Runcorn resident - originally from Stockbridge Village, said: “It’s been a long process determining whether my kidney was healthy enough to give to Andy, but I’m made up we could go ahead! I can’t

Mr Sanjay Mehra, consultant transplant surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, added: deny that the prospect of having such a big operation scared me, but all I was thinking about is getting Andy well.

“For me, it’s just a couple of months out of my life where I’ll feel a bit tired and sore, but for Andy it will be a whole new life. It’ll be so lovely to see him healthy and happy, without the worry of his worsening condition getting him down.”

The pair are now hoping to use their experience to encourage others to sign up to the Organ Donor Register.

Andy, from Crewe, said: “I’ve lived with chronic kidney disease for a long time now, but I feel lucky and grateful to be able to have this transplant. It means I can get my life back and I’m very much looking forward to a future when I will be well.

“Across the UK one in ten people in need of a transplant die waiting for a donor.

It’s vital that we get more people signed up to the Organ Donation Register, as we know that one donor could potentially change the lives of up to eight people.

“The short term and long term outcomes from a living donor transplant are excellent, however for a small minority of patients there may not be the expected result. Following his operation we would like to wish Andy the best outcome from his transplant.”

Patient celebrates 60 years of good health with diabetes To celebrate World Diabetes Day, a patient diagnosed with diabetes over 60 years ago was presented with a prestigious award by Dr Purewal, consultant and clinical lead for diabetes at the Royal.

Barbara Watkinson, 70, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1955 when she was just nine years old, and has continued to manage her condition for over 60 years.

In 2006, Barbara was presented with the Alan Nabarro medal which marked 50 years of having and managing her diabetes successfully. Ten years later, she is now eligible for the highest accolade given by Diabetes UK, the Robert Lawrence medal which celebrates 60 years living with diabetes.

Barbara said: “It’s fantastic to have received this medal. As for my diabetes, I think you have to be positive about your life, your lifestyle and look after yourself.

“If you think you have diabetes or if you have already been diagnosed with the condition there is lots of help out there. The team at the Royal have been fantastic and really supportive. They even invited me along to attend a carb counting course, which helps me understand my diet better and how eating certain things can impact on my health.”

‘My transplant helped me achieve Rio dream’ A Paralympic gold medallist paid a visit to Liverpool University’s Department of Eye and Vision Science to see the work that is being done to pioneer new treatments – much like the one that saved her sight.

Swimmer Stephanie Slater need a cornea transplant after she was diagnosed with kerataconus – a condition which affects the cornea, making vision blurred - before the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

Consultant eye surgeon at St Paul’s Eye Unit Mr Mark Batterbury performed the corneal transplant after the Games so that Stephanie could train without interruption and compete in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay and the 100m Butterfly.

Stephanie, 26, from Preston, began her sporting career as an able-bodied athlete, but after suffering nerve damage to her left arm she switched to parasport.

She said: “It was so important for me to be at the 2016 Paralympic Games because my lifelong dream of competing in the Olympics ended before the London 2012 Games when I was diagnosed with nerve damage to my left arm. At the time I thought it was the end of my swimming career as well.

“I was diagnosed with keratoconus back in 2008 and was under my local hospital until my sight really deteriorated in 2013.

My right eye was already too badly affected and could no longer be corrected by glasses or contact lenses so the team at St Paul’s decided to give me a new cornea via a transplant.

“The cornea came from someone kindly donating their eyes so parts, such as the cornea, could be used to help others see again. Without the cornea my sight would have continued to get worse and I may have gone blind. I now have been given the chance of gaining vision back and being able to drive. It will also help me daily with my sporting career and fulfilling my dreams.”

The University of Liverpool in partnership with the Royal has been

leading research into eye screening for the disease since 1991.

Mr Mark Batterbury said: “For every person that donates their eyes we are able to give the gift of sight to two people. What people don’t also know is that we can use their eyes even if they have poor vision themselves. Also, eyes that can’t be used for transplantation can be used to help our pioneering research to develop new sightsaving treatments.

“Unfortunately many organ donors choose not to donate their eyes, for many different reasons, more so than any other organs.

Stephanie is an example of the importance of donating eyes to help others. It’s vital that if you wish to donate your eyes you register on the organ donation website and inform your next of kin of your decision.”

Liverpool region awarded £3.4m to translate the latest science into new medical treatments An important milestone for medical research in Liverpool has been reached after a partnership involving the local NHS and University of Liverpool was successful in securing £3.4million in funding for translational medicine research.

The funding, provided by the National Institute for Health Research, will support the infrastructure costs for early experimental medicine research to help speed up the translation of scientific advances for the benefit of patients.

Translational medicine is a rapidly growing discipline in biomedical research and aims to ‘speed up’ the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments. This is done by using a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, “bench-to-bedside” approach that sees research done in the laboratory directly used to develop new ways to treat patients.

The applications for the funding were made by the Royal’s Dr Fitzgerald, and Alder Hey, led by Professor Michael Beresford, in partnership with the University of Liverpool.

The Clinical Research Unit at the Royal, which carries out 30 early phase research studies a year, received £1.4million enabling more early phase and experimental medicine research - bringing new therapies, devices and diagnostics to patients more quickly.

Chief executive Aidan Kehoe said: “We are proud to receive recognition from NIHR as it shows that our patients are attending a hospital that is at the forefront of clinical research.

“We have a strong history of carrying out research which is vital to improving the quality of lives of patients around the world. This will be further enhanced with the opening of the new Royal and development of the Liverpool Health Campus which will devote 100,000

square metres to life sciences, within the heart of the Knowledge Quarter.”

Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, associate pro-vice chancellor for clinical research at the University of Liverpool, and executive director of Liverpool Health Partners, said: “Once again these successful funding applications highlight the strengths of clinical research and the NHS-University partnerships in Liverpool.

“Our translational research is underpinned by a critical mass of expertise and internationallyrenowned externally-funded centres of excellence, and world-class research facilities that pull research in basic science through to clinical application.

“Today’s health research is tomorrow’s healthcare so I am delighted that this funding will enable us to further progress more research and development in this exciting field.”

Starter for 10 A local businessman who wrote his company’s business plan during a fivemonth stay in hospital wants to give back to the hospital that saved his life.

50-year-old Roy Shelton, group chief executive of ITS Technology Group based in Chester, is raising funds alongside colleagues for R Charity by signing up to R Charity’s Starter for Ten campaign.

Scouse back on the menu with R Charity In March, supporters of R Charity will be dusting off their tried and trusted scouse recipes once again to celebrate Merseyside’s favourite comfort dish.

The second annual Scouse at R House event from R Charity encourages Merseyside residents to don their aprons and host an event, big or small, to celebrate all things scouse.

The charity, who are raising money to provide the very best treatment and comfort for patients in the new Royal, are calling for local businesses, pubs, community groups and individual fundraisers to get their family and friends together for an evening to celebrate our great city.

As part of their scouse celebration, R Charity have called in the help of top local chefs Dave Critchley of the London Carriage Works and Paul Fuller from Mister Miyagi’s to provide their recipes for others to cook for themselves.

Aimee Clare, senior community fundraiser for R Charity, is hoping as many scousers as possible sign up to take part this March.

She said: “Our Appeal aims to raise £10million to provide patients with stroke, breast cancer and other serious illnesses, with the best and most effective treatments in a comfortable setting.

“The Royal is a place that almost everyone on Merseyside will have been to or been treated in and this is why we want you to help support us to give the very best care that we can to fellow scousers.

“Scouse at R House events don’t have to focus around the scouse food dish – parties can celebrate everything and anything that makes this city great. So dig out your old Merseybeat records, or your old Everton and Liverpool scarfs out the loft and let’s have some fun!”

In 2011, Roy recently spent five months in the Royal and received emergency treatment after being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis during a busy time in his life.

He said: “I fell ill during what was the second trimester of my wife’s pregnancy. I was so ill I missed the birth of our youngest son, Charlie.

“However if it wasn’t for the staff in the Royal I might not have seen Charlie at all.”

The birth of Roy’s fourth child wasn’t the only major change that took place during his time in hospital.

To take his mind of his recovery, Roy used his time to work on a business project that would change his life and that of his family.

Roy said: “I decided to start writing a business plan while in the Royal as I didn’t have much else to do!”

Five years on and Roy’s company ITS Technology Group is thriving and celebrating its sixth birthday in March.

He said: “The company is doing well, but if might not have even existed had I not made it through my illness.”

To show his appreciation, Roy now uses his business success to help him say thanks to the Royal and the staff that saved his life.

Roy and the ITS team have signed up to R Charity’s ‘Starter for 10’ campaign as the charity aims to raise £10,000 towards a comfortable relative’s room for patients’ families in the new Royal’s Critical Care Unit.

Starter for 10 wants to encourage North West businesses to show their entrepreneurial skills by turning £100 into £1,000 for the charity.

Lauren Davies, corporate partnerships manager for R Charity said: “This is a great way for local entrepreneurs to show off their business prowess, while raising funds for a fantastic cause.

“The money raised will go towards helping families of Critical Care patients giving them a quiet space to relax during what can be a difficult time for loved ones.”
